abated.
The waters
receded steadily from the earth, and after 150 days the waters had gone
down.
And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
Then the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building.
Go to, let us go
down, and there
confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.
Come, let Us go
down and
confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.”
And there was a famine in the land: and
Abram went
down into Egypt to
sojourn there; for the famine was
grievous in the land.
Now there was a famine in the land. So
Abram went
down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.
And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
So
Abram brought all these to Him, split each of them
down the middle, and laid the
halves opposite each other. The birds, however, he did not cut in half.
And when the fowls came
down upon the carcases,
Abram drove them away.
And the birds of prey descended on the
carcasses, but
Abram drove them away.
And when the sun was going
down, a deep sleep fell upon
Abram; and, lo, an
horror of great darkness fell upon him.
As the sun was setting,
Abram fell into a deep sleep, and suddenly great terror and darkness
overwhelmed him.
And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.
When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, behold, a smoking
firepot and a flaming
torch appeared and passed between the
halves of the
carcasses.
I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.
I will go
down to see if their actions fully
justify the outcry that has reached Me. If not, I will find out.”
But before they lay
down, the men of the city, even the men of
Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the city of
Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house.
And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to
sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed
sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.
“Get out of the way!” they replied. And they declared, “This one came here as a foreigner, and he is already acting like a judge! Now we will treat you worse than them.” And they pressed in on Lot and moved in to break down the door.
Then the LORD rained
down sulfur and fire on
Sodom and
Gomorrah—from the LORD out of the heavens.
And he looked toward
Sodom and
Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and
beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the country went up as the smoke of a furnace.
He looked
down toward
Sodom and
Gomorrah and all the land of the plain, and he saw the smoke rising from the land like smoke from a furnace.
And they made their father drink wine that night: and the
firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay
down, nor when she arose.
So that night they got their father
drunk with wine, and the
firstborn went in and
slept with her father; he was not aware when she lay
down or when she got up.
And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
So again that night they got their father
drunk with wine, and the younger daughter went in and
slept with him; he was not aware when she lay
down or when she got up.
And she went, and sat her
down over against him a good way off, as it were a
bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and
wept.
Then she went off and sat
down nearby, about a
bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and
wept.
And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of
Heth.
Then Abraham rose and bowed
down before the people of the land, the
Hittites.
And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land.
Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land
And he made his camels to
kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.
As evening approached, he made the camels
kneel down near the well outside the town at the time when the women went out to draw water.
And let it come to pass, that the
damsel to whom I shall say, Let
down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
Now may it happen that the
girl to whom I say, ‘Please let
down your
jar that I may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”
And the
damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went
down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
Now the
girl was very beautiful, a virgin who had not had relations with any man. She went
down to the spring, filled her
jar, and came up again.
And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
“Drink, my lord,” she replied, and she quickly lowered her
jar to her hands and gave him a drink.
And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD.
Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD,
And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold,
Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went
down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her, Let me drink, I pray thee.
And before I had finished praying in my heart, there was
Rebekah coming out with her
jar on her shoulder, and she went
down to the spring and drew water. So I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’
And she made
haste, and let
down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I
drank, and she made the camels drink also.
She quickly lowered her
jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well.’ So I
drank, and she also watered the camels.
And I bowed down my head, and worshipped the LORD, and blessed the LORD God of my master Abraham, which had led me in the right way to take my master’s brother’s daughter unto his son.
Then I bowed
down and worshiped the LORD; and I blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who led me on the right road to take the
granddaughter of my master’s brother for his son.
And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.
When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed down to the ground before the LORD.
And
Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the
camel.
And when
Rebekah looked up and saw Isaac, she got
down from her
camel And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Settle in the land where I tell you.
And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that
Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was
sporting with
Rebekah his wife.
When Isaac had been there a long time,
Abimelech king of the Philistines looked
down from the window and was surprised to see Isaac
caressing his wife
Rebekah.
Let people serve thee, and nations bow
down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow
down to thee:
cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.
May peoples serve you and nations bow
down to you. May you be the master of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow
down to you. May those who
curse you be
cursed, and those who
bless you be blessed.”
And he lighted upon a certain place, and
tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his
pillows, and lay
down in that place to sleep.
On reaching a certain place, he spent the night there because the sun had set. And taking one of the stones from that place, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.
And he dreamed, and behold a
ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
And Jacob had a dream about a
ladder that rested on the earth with its top reaching up to heaven, and God’s angels were going up and
down the
ladder.
Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themselves.
Then the maidservants and their children approached and bowed down.
And Leah also with her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and
Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
Leah and her children also approached and bowed
down, and then Joseph and
Rachel approached and bowed
down.
For, behold, we were binding
sheaves in the field, and, lo, my
sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your
sheaves stood round about, and made
obeisance to my
sheaf.
We were binding
sheaves of grain in the field, and suddenly my
sheaf rose and stood upright, while your
sheaves gathered around and bowed
down to mine.”
And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it his brethren, and said, Behold, I have dreamed a dream more; and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made
obeisance to me.
Then Joseph had another dream and told it to his brothers. “Look,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”
And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father
rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow
down ourselves to thee to the earth?
He told his father and brothers, but his father
rebuked him and said, “What is this dream that you have had? Will your mother and brothers and I actually come and bow
down to the ground before you?”
And they sat
down to eat bread: and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from
Gilead with their camels bearing
spicery and
balm and
myrrh, going to carry it
down to Egypt.
And as they sat
down to eat a meal, they looked up and saw a
caravan of
Ishmaelites coming from
Gilead. Their camels were carrying spices,
balm, and
myrrh on their way
down to Egypt.
And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, For I will go
down into the grave unto my son
mourning. Thus his father
wept for him.
All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said. “I will go
down to
Sheol mourning for my son.” So his father
wept for him.
And it came to pass at that time, that Judah went down from his brethren, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.
About that time, Judah left his brothers and settled near a man named Hirah, an Adullamite.
And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him of the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down thither.
Meanwhile, Joseph had been taken
down to Egypt, where an Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and captain of the guard, bought him from the
Ishmaelites who had taken him there.
And he asked Pharaoh’s officers that were with him in the ward of his lord’s house, saying, Wherefore look ye so
sadly to day?
So he asked the officials of Pharaoh who were in
custody with him in his master’s house, “Why are your faces so
downcast today?”
And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you
down thither, and
buy for us from thence; that we may live, and not die.
“Look,” he added, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go
down there and
buy some for us, so that we may live and not die.”
And Joseph’s ten brethren went
down to
buy corn in Egypt.
So ten of Joseph’s brothers went
down to
buy grain from Egypt.
And Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph’s brethren came, and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth.
Now Joseph was the ruler of the land; he was the one who sold grain to all its people. So when his brothers arrived, they bowed down before him with their faces to the ground.
And he said, My son shall not go
down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief
befall him by the way in the which ye go, then shall ye bring
down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
But Jacob replied, “My son will not go
down there with you, for his brother is dead, and he alone is left. If any
harm comes to him on your journey, you will bring my gray hair
down to
Sheol in sorrow.”
If thou
wilt send our brother with us, we will go
down and
buy thee food:
If you will send our brother with us, we will go
down and
buy food for you.
But if thou
wilt not send him, we will not go
down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.
But if you will not send him, we will not go; for the man told us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’”
And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the
tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother
down?
They replied, “The man questioned us in detail about ourselves and our family: ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ And we answered him accordingly. How could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother here’?”
And their father Israel said unto them, If it must be so now, do this; take of the best fruits in the land in your vessels, and carry
down the man a present, a little
balm, and a little honey, spices, and
myrrh, nuts, and almonds:
Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: Put some of the best products of the land in your packs and carry them
down as a gift for the man—a little
balm and a little honey, spices and
myrrh, pistachios and almonds.
And the men took that present, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rose up, and went down to Egypt, and stood before Joseph.
So the men took these gifts, along with double the amount of silver, and Benjamin as well. Then they
hurried down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.
And said, O sir, we came indeed
down at the first time to
buy food:
“Please, sir,” they said, “we really did come
down here the first time to
buy food.
And other money have we brought
down in our hands to
buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our sacks.
We have brought additional silver with us to
buy food. We do not know who put our silver in our sacks.”
And they answered, Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive. And they bowed
down their heads, and made
obeisance.
“Your servant our father is well,” they answered. “He is still alive.” And they bowed down to honor him.
Then they speedily took
down every man his
sack to the ground, and opened every man his
sack.
So each one quickly lowered his
sack to the ground and opened it.
And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.
Then you told your servants, ‘Bring him down to me so that I can see him for myself.’
And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.
But you said to your servants, ‘Unless your younger brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’
And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, except our youngest brother be with us.
But we answered, ‘We cannot go down there unless our younger brother goes with us. So if our younger brother is not with us, we cannot see the man.’
And if ye take this also from me, and mischief
befall him, ye shall bring
down my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave.
Now if you also take this one from me and
harm comes to him, you will bring my gray hair
down to
Sheol in sorrow.’
It shall come to pass, when he
seeth that the
lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring
down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.
sees that the boy is not with us, he will die. Then your servants will have brought the gray hair of your servant our father
down to
Sheol in sorrow.
Haste ye, and go up to my father, and say unto him, Thus saith thy son Joseph, God hath made me lord of all Egypt: come
down unto me,
tarry not:
Now return quickly to my father and tell him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me without delay.
And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen; and ye shall
haste and bring
down my father
hither.
Tell my father about all my
splendor in Egypt and everything you have seen. And bring my father
down here quickly.”
And he said, I am God, the God of thy father: fear not to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation:
“I am God,” He said, “the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there.
I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.
I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will surely bring you back. And Joseph’s own hands will close your eyes.”
But I will lie with my fathers, and thou shalt carry me out of Egypt, and
bury me in their buryingplace. And he said, I will do as thou hast said.
but when I lie
down with my fathers, carry me out of Egypt and
bury me with them.” Joseph answered, “I will do as you have requested.”
O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they
slew a man, and in their selfwill they
digged down a wall.
May I never enter their council; may I never join their assembly. For they kill men in their anger, and
hamstring oxen on a
whim.
Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down before thee.
Judah, your brothers shall praise you. Your hand shall be on the necks of your enemies; your father’s sons shall bow down to you.
Judah is a lion’s
whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he
stooped down, he
couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall
rouse him up?
Judah is a young lion— my son, you return from the prey. Like a lion he crouches and lies
down; like a
lioness, who
dares to
rouse him?
And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.
His brothers also came to him, bowed down before him, and said, “We are your slaves!”
And the daughter of Pharaoh came
down to wash herself at the river; and her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent her
maid to
fetch it.
Soon the daughter of Pharaoh went
down to
bathe in the Nile, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. And when she saw the
basket among the reeds, she sent her
maidservant to
retrieve it.
And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he
slew the Egyptian, and
hid him in the sand.
After looking this way and that and seeing no one, he struck
down the Egyptian and
hid his body in the sand.
Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to
slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of
Midian: and he sat
down by a well.
When Pharaoh heard about this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of
Midian, where he sat
down beside a well.
And I am come
down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the
Canaanites, and the
Hittites, and the
Amorites, and the
Perizzites, and the
Hivites, and the Jebusites.
And the people believed: and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their
affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped.
and they believed. And when they heard that the LORD had attended to the Israelites and had seen their
affliction, they bowed
down and worshiped.
When Pharaoh shall speak unto you, saying,
Shew a
miracle for you: then thou shalt say unto Aaron, Take thy rod, and cast it before Pharaoh, and it shall become a serpent.
“When Pharaoh tells you, ‘Perform a
miracle,’ you are to say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it
down before Pharaoh,’ and it will become a serpent.”
And Moses and Aaron went in unto Pharaoh, and they did so as the LORD had commanded: and Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it became a serpent.
So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD had commanded. Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his officials, and it became a serpent.
For they cast
down every man his rod, and they became serpents: but Aaron’s rod
swallowed up their rods.
Each one threw
down his staff, and it became a serpent. But Aaron’s staff
swallowed up the other staffs.
Behold, to
morrow about this time I will cause it to rain a very
grievous hail, such as hath not been in Egypt since the foundation thereof even until now.
Behold, at this time
tomorrow I will rain
down the worst
hail that has ever fallen on Egypt, from the day it was founded until now.
Send therefore now, and gather thy cattle, and all that thou hast in the field; for upon every man and beast which shall be found in the field, and shall not be brought home, the
hail shall come
down upon them, and they shall die.
So give orders now to shelter your
livestock and everything you have in the field. Every man or beast that remains in the field and is not brought inside will die when the
hail comes
down upon them.’”
And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and the LORD sent
thunder and
hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the LORD rained
hail upon the land of Egypt.
So Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven, and the LORD sent
thunder and
hail, and
lightning struck the earth. So the LORD rained
down hail upon the land of Egypt.
And the
hail smote throughout all the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the
hail smote every
herb of the field, and
brake every tree of the field.
Throughout the land of Egypt, the
hail struck
down everything in the field, both man and beast; it beat
down every plant of the field and
stripped every tree.
And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and spread abroad his hands unto the LORD: and the thunders and
hail ceased, and the rain was not poured upon the earth.
Then Moses departed from Pharaoh, went out of the city, and spread out his hands to the LORD. The
thunder and
hail ceased, and the rain no longer poured
down on the land.
And all these thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down themselves unto me, saying, Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee: and after that I will go out. And he went out from Pharaoh in a great anger.
And all these officials of yours will come and bow before me, saying, ‘Go, you and all the people who follow you!’ After that, I will depart.” And hot with anger, Moses left Pharaoh’s presence.
For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will
smite all the
firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will
execute judgment: I am the LORD.
On that night I will pass through the land of Egypt and strike
down every
firstborn male, both man and beast, and I will
execute judgment against all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD.
For the LORD will pass through to
smite the Egyptians; and when he
seeth the blood upon the
lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to
smite you.
When the LORD passes through to strike
down the Egyptians, He will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that
doorway; so He will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you
down.
That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD’S
passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he
smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.
you are to reply, ‘It is the
Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt when He struck
down the Egyptians and
spared our homes.’” Then the people bowed
down and worshiped.
And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the
pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,
At morning watch, however, the LORD looked
down on the army of the Egyptians from the
pillar of fire and cloud, and He threw their camp into confusion.
Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to go out and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test whether or not they will follow My instructions.
And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed; but when he lowered them, Amalek prevailed.
But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat
thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going
down of the sun.
When Moses’ hands grew heavy, they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Then Aaron and Hur held his hands up, one on each side, so that his hands remained steady until the sun went down.
And Moses went out to meet his father in law, and did
obeisance, and
kissed him; and they asked each other of their
welfare; and they came into the tent.
So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed
down and
kissed him. They
greeted each other and went into the tent.
And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come
down in the sight of all the people upon mount
Sinai.
and be prepared by the third day, for on the third day the LORD will come
down on Mount
Sinai in the sight of all the people.
And Moses went
down from the mount unto the people, and
sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes.
When Moses came down from the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes.
And the LORD came
down upon mount
Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up.
The LORD descended to the top of Mount
Sinai and called Moses to the summit. So Moses went up,
And the LORD said unto Moses, Go
down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to
gaze, and many of them perish.
and the LORD said to him, “Go
down and
warn the people not to break through to see the LORD, lest many of them perish.
And the LORD said unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: but let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest he break forth upon them.
And the LORD replied, “Go down and bring Aaron with you. But the priests and the people must not break through to come up to the LORD, or He will break out against them.”
So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them.
So Moses went down to the people and spoke to them.
