beseech thee, let now thine ear be
attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to
fear thy name: and
prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s

sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very
sore afraid,

sad, though you are not ill? This could only be
sadness of the heart.” I was
overwhelmed with
fear Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?

But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver;
yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the
fear of God.
The governors before me had
heavily burdened the people, taking from them bread and wine
plus forty shekels of silver. Their servants also
oppressed the people, but I did not do this because of my
fear of God.
My God, think thou upon
Tobiah and
Sanballat according to these their works, and on the
prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in
fear.
Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And
Tobiah sent letters to put me in
fear.
Moreover, these nobles kept reporting to me
Tobiah’s good deeds, and they relayed my words to him. And
Tobiah sent letters to
intimidate me.

And in every province, and in every city,
whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and
gladness, a
feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews; for the
fear of the Jews fell upon them.
In every province and every city, wherever the king’s edict and decree reached, there was joy and
gladness among the Jews, with
feasting and
celebrating. And many of the people of the land themselves became Jews, because the
fear of the Jews had fallen upon them.
The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king

This was done on the
thirteenth day of the month of
Adar, and on the
fourteenth day they rested, making it a day of
feasting and joy.
The Jews in
Susa, however, had assembled on the
thirteenth and the
fourteenth days of the month. So they rested on the
fifteenth day, making it a day of
feasting and joy.
Therefore the Jews of the villages, that dwelt in the unwalled towns, made the
fourteenth day of the month
Adar a day of
gladness and
feasting, and a good day, and of sending portions one to another.
This is why the rural Jews, who live in the villages, observe the
fourteenth day of the month of
Adar as a day of joy and
feasting. It is a
holiday for sending gifts to one another.
As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies, and the month which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy, and from
mourning into a good day: that they should make them days of
feasting and joy, and of sending portions one to another, and gifts to the poor.
as the days on which the Jews gained rest from their enemies and the month in which their sorrow turned to joy and their
mourning into a

There was a man in the land of
Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that
feared God, and
eschewed evil.
There was a man in the land of
Uz whose name was Job. And this man was
blameless and upright,
fearing God and
shunning evil.
And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them.
Job’s sons would take turns holding
feasts in their homes, and they would
invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
And it was so, when the days of their
feasting were gone about, that Job sent and
sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have
sinned, and
cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
And when the days of
feasting were over, Job would send for his children to
purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children have
sinned and
cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular practice.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that
feareth God, and escheweth evil?
Then the LORD said to
Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who
fears God and shuns evil.”
Satan answered the LORD, “Does Job
fear God for nothing?
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that
feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his
integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
Then the LORD said to
Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who
fears God and shuns evil. He still retains his
integrity, even though you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.”
For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.
For the thing I
feared has overtaken me, and what I
dreaded has
befallen me.
Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?
Is your reverence not your confidence, and the uprightness of your ways your hope?
Thou shalt be
hid from the
scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.
You will be hidden from the
scourge of the tongue, and will not
fear havoc when it comes.
At destruction and famine thou shalt
laugh: neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.
You will
laugh at destruction and famine, and need not
fear the beasts of the earth.
To him that is
afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the
fear of the
Almighty.
A
despairing man should have the kindness of his friend, even if he forsakes the
fear of the
Almighty.
Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his
fear terrify me:
Let Him remove His rod from me, so that His terror will no longer
frighten me.
Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.
Then I would speak without fear of Him. But as it is, I am on my own.
For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot;
yea, thou shalt be
stedfast, and shalt not
fear:
then indeed you will lift up your face without shame; you will stand firm and unafraid.
Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid;
yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
You will lie down without fear, and many will court your favor.
Yea, thou castest off
fear, and restrainest prayer before God.
But you even undermine the
fear of God and hinder
meditation before Him.
Be ye afraid of the sword: for wrath bringeth the punishments of the sword, that ye may know there is a judgment.
then you should
fear the sword
yourselves, because wrath brings punishment by the sword, so that you may know there is a judgment.”
Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.
Their homes are safe from fear; no rod of punishment from God is upon them.
Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?
Is it for your reverence that He rebukes you and enters into judgment against you?
Therefore snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubleth thee;
Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.
Therefore I am
terrified in His presence; when I consider this, I
fear Him.
Dominion and fear are with him, he maketh peace in his high places.
“Dominion and
awe belong to God; He establishes harmony in the heights of heaven.
And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.
And He said to man, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding.’”
Did I
fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families
terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?
because I greatly
feared the crowds and the contempt of the clans
terrified me, so that I kept silent and would not go outside—
Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon thee.
Surely no
fear of me should
terrify you; nor will my hand be heavy upon you.
Men do therefore fear him: he respecteth not any that are wise of heart.
Therefore, men fear Him, for He is not partial to the wise in heart.”
Gavest thou the goodly wings unto the peacocks? or wings and
feathers unto the
ostrich?
She is
hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without
fear;
She treats her young harshly, as if not her own, with no
concern that her labor was in vain.
He mocketh at
fear, and is not
affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword.
He laughs at
fear,
frightened of nothing; he does not turn back from the sword.
Her young ones also
suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.
His young ones feast on blood; and where the slain are, there he is.”
Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about.
Who can open his jaws, ringed by his
fearsome teeth?
Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear.
Nothing on earth is his equal— a creature devoid of fear!
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.
I will not fear the myriads set against me on every side.
But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.
But I will enter Your house by the abundance of Your loving devotion; in reverence I will bow down toward Your holy temple.
Put them in
fear, O LORD: that the nations may know themselves to be but men.
Selah.
Lay terror upon them, O LORD; let the nations know they are but men.
Selah There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.
There they are,
overwhelmed with
dread, for God is in the company of the righteous.
In whose eyes a
vile person is
contemned; but he honoureth them that
fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own
hurt, and changeth not.
who despises the
vile but honors those who
fear the LORD, who does not
revise a costly oath,
The
fear of the LORD is clean,
enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
The
fear of the LORD is pure,
enduring forever; the judgments of the LORD are true, being altogether righteous.
Ye that
fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob,
glorify him; and
fear him, all ye the seed of Israel.
You who
fear the LORD, praise Him! All descendants of Jacob, honor Him! All offspring of Israel,
revere Him!
My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation: I will pay my vows before them that fear him.
My praise for You resounds in the great assembly; I will
fulfill my vows before those who
fear You.
All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul.
All the rich of the earth will
feast and worship; all who go down to the dust will
kneel before Him— even those unable to preserve their lives.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will
fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.
Who is the man who
fears the LORD? He will
instruct him in the path chosen for him.
The secret of the LORD is with them that
fear him; and he will
shew them his covenant.
The LORD confides in those who fear Him, and reveals His covenant to them.
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
The LORD is my light and my salvation— whom shall I
fear? The LORD is the
stronghold of my life— whom shall I
dread?
Though an host should
encamp against me, my heart shall not
fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be
confident.
Though an army encamps around me, my heart will not fear; though a war breaks out against me, I will keep my trust.
I was a reproach among all mine enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to mine acquaintance: they that did see me without fled from me.
Among all my enemies I am a disgrace, and among my neighbors even more. I am
dreaded by my friends— they
flee when they see me on the street.
