For I am
jealous over you with godly jealousy:
for I have
espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a
chaste virgin to Christ.
I am
jealous for you with a godly jealousy.
For I promised you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
For if someone comes and proclaims a Jesus other than the One we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit than the One you received, or a different gospel than the one you accepted, you put up with it way too easily.
For I suppose I was not a
whit behind the very chiefest apostles.
I consider myself in no way inferior to those “
super-apostles.”
Have I committed an offence in
abasing myself that ye might be
exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely?
Was it a sin
for me to humble myself in order to
exalt you, because I preached the gospel of God to you free of charge?
And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man:
for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from
Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being
burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself.
And when I was with you and in need, I was not a burden to
anyone;
for the brothers who came from
Macedonia supplied my needs. I have
refrained from being a burden to you in any way, and I will continue to do so.
And no
marvel;
for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
And no wonder,
for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
I say again, Let no man think me a
fool; if otherwise, yet as a
fool receive me, that I may
boast myself a little.
I
repeat: Let no one take me
for a
fool. But if you do, then receive me as a
fool, so that I too may
boast a little.
For ye suffer, if a man bring you into
bondage, if a man
devour you, if a man take of you, if a man
exalt himself, if a man
smite you on the face.
In fact, you even put up with
anyone who enslaves you or exploits you or takes advantage of you or exalts himself or strikes you in the face.
I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak.
Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak
foolishly,) I am bold also.
Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.
Five times I received from the Jews the
forty lashes
minus one.
Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.
Apart from these external trials, I face daily the pressure of my
concern for all the churches.
The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed
for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.
The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, who is
forever worthy of praise, knows that I am not lying.
It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.
I must go on
boasting. Although there is nothing to gain, I will go on to visions and revelations from the Lord.
How that he was caught up into
paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful
for a man to utter.
was caught up to
Paradise. The things he heard were too sacred
for words, things that man is not permitted to tell.
For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a
fool;
for I will say the truth: but now I
forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he
seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
Even if I wanted to
boast, I would not be a
fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I
refrain, so no one will credit me with more than he sees in me or hears from me,
For this thing I
besought the Lord
thrice, that it might depart from me.
Three times I
pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient
for thee:
for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most
gladly therefore will I rather glory in my
infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient
for you,
for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will
boast all the more
gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me.
Therefore I take pleasure in
infirmities, in reproaches, in
necessities, in persecutions, in distresses
for Christ’s sake:
for when I am weak, then am I strong.
That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
I am become a
fool in glorying; ye have compelled me:
for I ought to have been
commended of you:
for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing.
I have become a
fool, but you drove me to it. In fact, you should have
commended me, since I am in no way inferior to those “
super-apostles,” even though I am nothing.
For what is it wherein ye were inferior to other churches, except it be that I myself was not
burdensome to you?
forgive me this wrong.
In what way were you inferior to the other churches, except that I was not a burden to you?
Forgive me this wrong!
Behold, the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not be
burdensome to you:
for I seek not yours, but you:
for the children ought not to lay up
for the parents, but the parents
for the children.
See, I am ready to come to you a third time, and I will not be a burden, because I am not seeking your possessions, but you. For children should not have to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.
And I will very
gladly spend and be spent
for you; though the more abundantly I love you, the less I be loved.
And
for the sake of your souls, I will most
gladly spend my money and myself. If I love you more, will you love me less?
Again, think ye that we
excuse ourselves unto you? we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things,
dearly beloved,
for your
edifying.
Have you been thinking all along that we were making a
defense to you? We speak before God in Christ, and all of this, beloved, is to build you up.
For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults:
For I am afraid that when I come, I may not find you as I wish, and you may not find me as you wish. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy,
rage,
rivalry,
slander,
gossip,
arrogance, and disorder.
I am afraid that when I come again, my God will humble me before you, and I will be
grieved over many who have
sinned earlier and have not
repented of their acts of impurity, sexual immorality, and
debauchery.
I told you before, and
foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which
heretofore have
sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not
spare:
For though he was
crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God.
For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.
For He was indeed
crucified in weakness, yet He lives by God’s power. And though we are weak in Him, yet by God’s power we will live with Him to serve you.
Examine
yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own
selves. Know ye not your own
selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
Examine
yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test
yourselves. Can’t you see
for yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you actually fail the test?
For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.
For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.
For we are
glad, when we are weak, and ye are strong: and this also we wish, even your perfection.
In fact, we
rejoice when we are weak but you are strong, and our prayer is
for your perfection.
Therefore I write these things being absent, lest being present I should use sharpness, according to the power which the Lord hath given me to
edification, and not to destruction.
This is why I write these things while absent, so that when I am present I will not need to be severe in my use of the authority that the Lord gave me
for building you up, not
for tearing you down.
Finally, brethren,
farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you.
Finally, brothers,
rejoice! Aim
for perfect harmony,
encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.
Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
who gave Himself
for our sins to
rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father,
To whom be glory
for ever and ever.
Amen.
For do I now
persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men?
for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.
Am I now seeking the
approval of men, or of God? Or am I
striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.
But I
certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man.
For I
certify to you, brothers, that the gospel I preached was not devised by man.
For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.
For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews’ religion, how that beyond measure I
persecuted the church of God, and wasted it:
For you have heard of my
former way of life in
Judaism, how severely I
persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.
And profited in the Jews’ religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly
zealous of the traditions of my fathers.
I was advancing in
Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries and was extremely
zealous for the traditions of my fathers.
But they had heard only, That he which
persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed.
They only heard the account: “The man who
formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.”
And I went up by revelation, and communicated unto them that gospel which I
preach among the Gentiles, but privately to them which were of reputation, lest by any means I should run, or had run, in vain.
I went in
response to a revelation and set before them the gospel that I
preach among the Gentiles. But I spoke privately to those recognized as leaders,
for fear that I was running or had already run in vain.
To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.
But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (
whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man’s person:)
for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:
But as
for the highly esteemed—whatever they were makes no difference to me; God does not show
favoritism—those leaders added nothing to me.
Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do.
They only asked us to remember the poor, the very thing I was eager to do.
For before that certain came from James, he did eat with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the
circumcision.
For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself,
for fear of those in the
circumcision group.
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
know that a man is not justified by works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have believed in Christ Jesus, that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God
forbid.
But if, while we seek to be justified in Christ, we ourselves are found to be sinners, does that make Christ a minister of sin? Certainly not!
For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a
transgressor.
If I rebuild what I have already
torn down, I prove myself to be a
lawbreaker.
For I through the law am dead to the law, that I might live unto God.
For through the law I died to the law so that I might live to God.
I am
crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself
for me.
I have been
crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up
for me.
I do not
frustrate the grace of God:
for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
I do not set aside the grace of God. For if righteousness comes through the law, Christ died for nothing.
Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.
Have you suffered so much for nothing, if it really was for nothing?
Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.
So also, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
And the scripture,
foreseeing that God would
justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.
The Scripture
foresaw that God would
justify the Gentiles by faith, and
foretold the gospel to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”
For as many as are of the works of the law are under the
curse:
for it is written,
Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them.
All who
rely on works of the law are under a
curse.
For it is written: “
Cursed is
everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”
But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith.
Now it is clear that no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.”
Christ hath redeemed us from the
curse of the law, being made a
curse for us:
for it is written,
Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Christ redeemed us from the
curse of the law by becoming a
curse for us.
For it is written: “
Cursed is
everyone who is hung on a tree.”
For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
For if the inheritance depends on the law, then it no longer depends on a promise; but God freely granted it to Abraham through a promise.
A
mediator is unnecessary, however,
for only one party; but God is one.
Is the law then against the promises of God? God
forbid:
for if there had been a law given which could have given life,
verily righteousness should have been by the law.
Is the law, then, opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come from the law.
For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
For as many of you as have been
baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
There is neither
Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female:
for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
There is neither
Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female,
for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
But when the
fulness of the time was come, God sent
forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the law,
And because ye are sons, God hath sent
forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying,
Abba, Father.
And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “
Abba, Father!”
Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.
Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods.
I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.
I fear for you, that my efforts for you may have been in vain.
Brethren, I
beseech you, be as I am;
for I am as ye are: ye have not injured me at all.
I
beg you, brothers, become like me,
for I became like you. You have done me no wrong.
Where is then the blessedness ye spake of?
for I bear you record, that, if it had been possible, ye would have
plucked out your own eyes, and have given them to me.
What then has become of your blessing?
For I can
testify that, if it were possible, you would have
torn out your eyes and given them to me.
They
zealously affect you, but not well;
yea, they would
exclude you, that ye might affect them.
Those people are
zealous for you, but not in a good way. Instead, they want to
isolate you from us, so that you may be
zealous for them.
My little children, of whom I
travail in birth again until Christ be
formed in you,
My children,
for whom I am again in the pains of
childbirth until Christ is
formed in you,
I desire to be present with you now, and to change my voice; for I stand in doubt of you.
how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am
perplexed about you.
For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a
bondmaid, the other by a
freewoman.
For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman.
Which things are an
allegory:
for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount
Sinai, which gendereth to
bondage, which is
Agar.
These things serve as illustrations,
for the women represent two covenants. One covenant is from Mount
Sinai and bears children into slavery: This is
Hagar.
For this
Agar is mount
Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in
bondage with her children.
Now
Hagar stands
for Mount
Sinai in Arabia and corresponds to the present-day Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children.
For it is written,
Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break
forth and cry, thou that travailest not:
for the
desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
For it is written: “
Rejoice, O barren woman, who bears no children; break
forth and cry
aloud, you who have never
travailed; because more are the children of the
desolate woman than of her who has a husband.”
Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the
bondwoman and her son:
for the son of the
bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman.
But what does the Scripture say? “
Expel the slave woman and her son,
for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.”
It is
for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not be
encumbered once more by a yoke of slavery.
For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.
But by faith we eagerly
await through the Spirit the hope of righteousness.
I would they were even cut off which trouble you.
For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.
For you, brothers, were called to freedom; but do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Rather, serve one another in love.
For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself.
The entire law is fulfilled in a single decree: “Love your
neighbor as
yourself.”
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
For the flesh craves what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are opposed to each other, so that you do not do what you want.
The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and
debauchery;
For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.
If
anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.
For every man shall bear his own burden.
For each one should carry his own load.
For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh
reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit
reap life
everlasting.
The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh will
reap destruction; but the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will
reap eternal life.
And let us not be
weary in well doing:
for in due season we shall
reap, if we
faint not.
Let us not grow
weary in well-doing,
for in due time we will
reap a harvest if we do not give up.
As many as desire to make a fair
shew in the flesh, they
constrain you to be
circumcised; only lest they should suffer persecution
for the cross of Christ.
Those who want to make a good impression outwardly are trying to
compel you to be
circumcised. They only do this to avoid persecution
for the cross of Christ.
For neither they themselves who are
circumcised keep the law; but desire to have you
circumcised, that they may glory in your flesh.
But God
forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is
crucified unto me, and I unto the world.
But as
for me, may I never
boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been
crucified to me, and I to the world.
From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus.
From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.
