And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold,
Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep.
“Is he well?” Jacob inquired. “
Yes,” they answered, “and
here comes his daughter
Rachel with his sheep.”
And while he yet spake with them,
Rachel came with
her father’s sheep: for she kept them.
While he was still speaking with them,
Rachel arrived with
her father’s sheep, for she was a
shepherdess.
And Jacob told
Rachel that he was
her father’s brother, and that he was
Rebekah’s son: and she ran and told
her father.
He told
Rachel that he was
Rebekah’s son, a relative of
her father, and she ran and told
her father.
And
Laban said, It is better that I give
her to thee, than that I should give
her to another man:
abide with me.
Laban replied, “Better that I give
her to you than to another. Stay
here with me.”
And Jacob served seven years for
Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to
her.
So Jacob served seven years for
Rachel, yet it seemed but a few days because of his love for
her.
And Jacob said unto
Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto
her.
Finally Jacob said to
Laban, “Grant me my wife, for my time is complete, and I want to sleep with
her.”
And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.
But when evening came,
Laban took his daughter Leah and gave
her to Jacob, and he
slept with
her.
And
Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the
firstborn.
Laban replied, “It is not our custom
here to give the younger daughter in marriage before the older.
Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.
Finish this week’s
celebration, and we will give you the younger one in return for another seven years of work.”
And Jacob did so, and fulfilled
her week: and he gave him
Rachel his daughter to wife also.
And Jacob did just that. He finished the week’s
celebration, and
Laban gave him his daughter
Rachel as his wife.
And when the LORD saw that Leah was
hated, he opened
her womb: but
Rachel was barren.
When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened
her womb; but
Rachel was barren.
And when
Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children,
Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die.
When
Rachel saw that she was not bearing any children for Jacob, she
envied her sister. “Give me children, or I will die!” she said to Jacob.
And she said, Behold my
maid Bilhah, go in unto
her; and she shall bear upon my knees that I may also have children by
her.
Then she said, “
Here is my
maidservant Bilhah. Sleep with
her, that she may bear children for me, so that through
her I too can build a family.”
And she gave him
Bilhah her handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto
her.
When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah
her maid, and gave
her Jacob to wife.
When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she gave her servant Zilpah to Jacob as a wife.
And she said unto
her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And
Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes.
But Leah replied, “Is it not enough that you have taken away my husband? Now you want to take my son’s mandrakes as well?” “Very well,” said
Rachel, “he may sleep with you
tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”
And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have
hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with
her that night.
When Jacob came in from the field that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come with me, for I have
hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he
slept with
her that night.
And afterwards she bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah.
After that, Leah gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.
And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.
In that dream the angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob!’ And I replied, ‘Here I am.’
Now while
Laban was out shearing his sheep,
Rachel stole her father’s household idols.
With
whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren
discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that
Rachel had
stolen them.
If you find your gods with
anyone here, he shall not live! In the presence of our relatives, see for
yourself if anything is yours, and take it back.” For Jacob did not know that
Rachel had
stolen the idols.
Now
Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the
camel’s furniture, and sat upon them. And
Laban searched all the tent, but found them not.
Now
Rachel had taken
Laban’s household idols, put them in the saddlebag of
her camel, and was sitting on them. And
Laban searched everything in the tent but found nothing.
And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.
Rachel said to
her father, “Sir, do not be
angry that I cannot stand up before you; for I am having my period.” So
Laban searched, but could not find the household idols.
Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it
here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge
betwixt us both.
You have searched all my goods! Have you found anything that belongs to you? Put it here before my brothers and yours, that they may judge between the two of us.
Laban also said to Jacob, “
Here is the
mound, and
here is the
pillar I have set up between you and me.
Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
In great fear and distress, Jacob divided his people into two camps, as well as the flocks and herds and camels.
And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space
betwixt drove and drove.
He entrusted them to his servants in separate
herds and told them, “Go on
ahead of me, and keep some distance between the
herds.”
And so commanded he the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto
Esau, when ye find him.
He also
instructed the second, the third, and all those following behind the
herds: “When you meet
Esau, you are to say the same thing to him.
And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and
her children after, and
Rachel and Joseph
hindermost.
He put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and
her children next, and
Rachel and Joseph at the rear.
And Leah also with
her children came near, and bowed themselves: and after came Joseph near and
Rachel, and they bowed themselves.
Leah and
her children also approached and bowed down, and then Joseph and
Rachel approached and bowed down.
And he said unto him, My lord knoweth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me: and if men should overdrive them one day, all the flock will die.
But Jacob replied, “My lord knows that the children are
frail, and I must care for sheep and cattle that are
nursing their young. If they are driven hard for even a day, all the animals will die.
And when
Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw
her, he took
her, and lay with
her, and
defiled her.
When
Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the region, saw
her, he took
her and lay with
her by force.
And his soul
clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the
damsel, and spake kindly unto the
damsel.
And his soul was drawn to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob. He loved the young
girl and spoke to
her tenderly.
And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son
Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give
her him to wife.
But Hamor said to them, “My son
Shechem longs for your daughter. Please give
her to him as his wife.
And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.
You may settle among us, and the land will be open to you. Live here, move about freely, and acquire your own property.”
And
Shechem said unto
her father and unto
her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.
Then
Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Grant me this favor, and I will give you whatever you ask.
Only
herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be
circumcised, as they are
circumcised.
But only on this condition will the men agree to dwell with us and be one people: if all our men are
circumcised as they are.
They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their
asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,
They took their flocks and
herds and
donkeys, and everything else in the city or in the field.
Later, they set out from
Bethel, and while they were still some distance from
Ephrath,
Rachel began to give birth, and
her labor was difficult.
And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the
midwife said unto
her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
During
her severe labor, the
midwife said to
her, “Do not be afraid, for you are having another son.”
And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin.
And with her last breath—for she was dying—she named him Ben-oni. But his father called him Benjamin.
And Jacob set a
pillar upon
her grave: that is the
pillar of
Rachel’s grave unto this day.
Jacob set up a
pillar on
her grave; it marks
Rachel’s tomb to this day.
And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in
Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him,
Here am I.
Israel said to him, “Are not your brothers pasturing the flocks at
Shechem? Get ready; I am sending you to them.” “I am ready,” Joseph replied.
And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.
“They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” So Joseph set out after his brothers and found them at Dothan.
And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.
“Here comes that dreamer!” they said to one another.
And Judah saw there a daughter of a certain
Canaanite, whose name was Shuah; and he took
her, and went in unto
her.
There Judah saw the daughter of a
Canaanite man named Shua, and he took
her as a wife and
slept with
her.
And Judah took a wife for Er his
firstborn, whose name was Tamar.
Now Judah acquired a wife for Er, his
firstborn, and
her name was Tamar.
And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother’s wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother.
Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife. Perform your duty as her brother-in-law and raise up offspring for your brother.”
Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest
peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in
her father’s house.
Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s house.
And she put
her widow’s garments off from
her, and covered
her with a
vail, and
wrapped herself, and sat in an open place, which is by the way to Timnath; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given unto him to wife.
she removed
her widow’s garments, covered
her face with a
veil to
disguise herself, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the way to Timnah. For she saw that although Shelah had grown up, she had not been given to him as a wife.
When Judah saw
her, he thought
her to be an
harlot; because she had covered
her face.
When Judah saw
her, he thought she was a
prostitute because she had covered
her face.
And he turned unto
her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What
wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
Not
realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to
her and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.” “What will you give me for sleeping with you?” she inquired.
And he said, What
pledge shall I give thee? And she said, Thy
signet, and thy bracelets, and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it
her, and came in unto
her, and she conceived by him.
“What
pledge should I give you?” he asked. She answered, “Your seal and your cord, and the staff in your hand.” So he gave them to
her and
slept with
her, and she became
pregnant by him.
And she arose, and went away, and laid by
her vail from
her, and put on the garments of
her widowhood.
Then Tamar got up and departed. And she removed
her veil and put on
her widow’s garments again.
And Judah sent the
kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his
pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found
her not.
Now when Judah sent his friend Hirah the Adullamite with the young goat to collect the items he had left with the woman, he could not find her.
Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the
harlot, that was openly by the way side? And they said, There was no
harlot in this place.
And he returned to Judah, and said, I cannot find
her; and also the men of the place said, that there was no
harlot in this place.
So Hirah returned to Judah and said, “I could not find
her, and
furthermore, the men of that place said, ‘No
shrine prostitute has been
here.’”
And Judah said, Let
her take it to
her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this
kid, and thou hast not found
her.
“Let
her keep the items,” Judah replied. “Otherwise we will become a
laughingstock. After all, I did send
her this young goat, but you could not find
her.”
And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the
harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by
whoredom. And Judah said, Bring
her forth, and let
her be burnt.
About three months later, Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has
prostituted herself, and now she is
pregnant.” “Bring
her out!” Judah replied. “Let
her be burned to death!”
When she was brought forth, she sent to
her father in law, saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: and she said,
Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, the
signet, and bracelets, and staff.
As she was being brought out, Tamar sent a message to
her father-in-law: “I am
pregnant by the man to whom these items belong.” And she added, “Please examine them. Whose seal and cord and staff are these?”
And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
Judah recognized the items and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not have relations with her again.
And it came to pass in the time of
her travail, that, behold, twins were in
her womb.
When the time came for Tamar to give birth, there were twins in
her womb.
And it came to pass after these things, that his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.
and after some time his master’s wife cast her eyes upon Joseph and said, “Sleep with me.”
But he refused, and said unto his master’s wife, Behold, my master
wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand;
But he refused. “Look,” he said to his master’s wife, “with me
here, my master does not
concern himself with anything in his house, and he has entrusted everything he owns to my care.
And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he
hearkened not unto
her, to lie by
her, or to be with
her.
Although Potiphar’s wife spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be near her.
And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.
She
grabbed Joseph by his
cloak and said, “Sleep with me!” But leaving his
cloak in
her hand, he escaped and ran outside.
And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth,
When she saw that he had left his
cloak in
her hand and had run out of the house,
That she called unto the men of
her house, and spake unto them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us to
mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I
cried with a loud voice:
she called
her household servants. “Look,” she said, “this Hebrew has been brought to us to make
sport of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, but I
screamed as loud as I could.
And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.
So Potiphar’s wife kept Joseph’s
cloak beside
her until his master came home.
And in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it
budded, and
her blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:
and on the vine were three branches. As it
budded, its blossoms opened and its clusters
ripened into grapes.
For indeed I was
stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and
here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the
dungeon.
For I was
kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews, and even
here I have done nothing for which they should have put me in this
dungeon.”
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.
Pharaoh also told Joseph, “I
hereby place you over all the land of Egypt.”
And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and spake roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of
Canaan to
buy food.
And when Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he treated them as strangers and spoke harshly to them. “Where have you come from?” he asked. “From the land of
Canaan,” they replied. “We are
here to
buy food.”
Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest brother come
hither.
And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh lives, you shall not leave this place unless your youngest brother comes here.
And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my
sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?
“My silver has been returned!” he said to his brothers. “It is
here in my
sack.” Their hearts
sank, and
trembling, they turned to one another and said, “What is this that God has done to us?”
And the man, the lord of the country, said unto us,
Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren
here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone:
Then the man who is lord of the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are
honest: Leave one brother with me, take food to
relieve the hunger of your households, and go.
And they said, The man asked us straitly of our state, and of our kindred, saying, Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? and we told him according to the
tenor of these words: could we certainly know that he would say, Bring your brother down?
They replied, “The man questioned us in detail about ourselves and our family: ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ And we answered him accordingly. How could we possibly know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother here’?”
And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for
bondmen, and our
asses.
But the brothers were
frightened that they had been taken to Joseph’s house. “We have been brought
here because of the silver that was returned in our bags the first time,” they said. “They intend to overpower us and take us as slaves, along with our
donkeys.”
And said, O sir, we came indeed down at the first time to
buy food:
“Please, sir,” they said, “we really did come down
here the first time to
buy food.
Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant
abide instead of the
lad a
bondman to my lord; and let the
lad go up with his brethren.
Now please let your servant stay here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy. Let him return with his brothers.
So now it was not you that sent me
hither, but God: and he hath made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house, and a ruler throughout all the land of Egypt.
Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God, who has made me a father to Pharaoh—lord of all his household and ruler over all the land of Egypt.
And thou shalt dwell in the land of
Goshen, and thou shalt be near unto me, thou, and thy children, and thy children’s children, and thy flocks, and thy
herds, and all that thou hast:
You shall settle in the land of
Goshen and be near me—you and your children and grandchildren, your flocks and
herds, and everything you own.
And ye shall tell my father of all my glory in Egypt, and of all that ye have seen; and ye shall
haste and bring down my father
hither.
Tell my father about all my
splendor in Egypt and everything you have seen. And bring my father down
here quickly.”
And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night, and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I.
And that night God spoke to Israel in a vision: “Jacob, Jacob!” He said. “Here I am,” replied Jacob.
And the men are
shepherds, for their trade hath been to feed cattle; and they have brought their flocks, and their
herds, and all that they have.
The men are
shepherds; they raise
livestock, and they have brought their flocks and
herds and all that they own.’
Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their
herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of
Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of
Goshen.
So Joseph went and told Pharaoh: “My father and my brothers, with their flocks and
herds and all they own, have come from the land of
Canaan and are now in
Goshen.”
And they brought their cattle unto Joseph: and Joseph gave them bread in exchange for horses, and for the flocks, and for the cattle of the
herds, and for the
asses: and he fed them with bread for all their cattle for that year.
So they brought their
livestock to Joseph, and he gave them food in exchange for their horses, their flocks and
herds, and their
donkeys. Throughout that year he provided them with food in exchange for all their
livestock.
When that year was ended, they came unto him the second year, and said unto him, We will not hide it from my lord, how that our money is spent; my lord also hath our herds of cattle; there is not ought left in the sight of my lord, but our bodies, and our lands:
When that year was over, they came to him the second year and said, “We cannot hide from our lord that our money is gone and all our
livestock belongs to you. There is nothing left for our lord except our bodies and our land.
Then Joseph said unto the people, Behold, I have bought you this day and your land for Pharaoh: lo,
here is seed for you, and ye shall
sow the land.
Then Joseph said to the people, “Now that I have acquired you and your land for Pharaoh this day,
here is seed for you to
sow in the land.
And now thy two sons, Ephraim and
Manasseh, which were born unto thee in the land of Egypt before I came unto thee into Egypt, are mine; as
Reuben and
Simeon, they shall be mine.
And now your two sons born to you in Egypt before I came to you
here shall be reckoned as mine; Ephraim and
Manasseh shall be mine, just as
Reuben and
Simeon are mine.
And as for me, when I came from Padan,
Rachel died by me in the land of
Canaan in the way, when yet there was but a little way to come unto
Ephrath: and I buried
her there in the way of
Ephrath; the same is
Bethlehem.
Now as for me, when I was returning from Paddan, to my sorrow
Rachel died along the way in the land of
Canaan, some distance from
Ephrath. So I buried
her there beside the road to
Ephrath” (that is,
Bethlehem).
And all the house of Joseph, and his brethren, and his father’s house: only their little ones, and their flocks, and their
herds, they left in the land of
Goshen.
along with all of Joseph’s household, and his brothers, and his father’s household. Only their children and flocks and
herds were left in
Goshen.
And he said, When ye do the office of a
midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.
“When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them on the birthstools. If the child is a son, kill him; but if it is a daughter, let her live.”
And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash
herself at the river; and
her maidens walked along by the river’s side; and when she saw the ark among the flags, she sent
her maid to
fetch it.
Soon the daughter of Pharaoh went down to
bathe in the Nile, and
her attendants were walking along the riverbank. And when she saw the
basket among the reeds, she sent
her maidservant to
retrieve it.
And Pharaoh’s daughter said to
her, Go. And the
maid went and called the child’s mother.
“Go
ahead,” Pharaoh’s daughter told
her. And the
girl went and called the boy’s mother.
And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto
her, Take this child away, and
nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and
nursed it.
Pharaoh’s daughter said to
her, “Take this child and
nurse him for me, and I will pay your wages.” So the woman took the boy and
nursed him.
And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses: and she said, Because I drew him out of the water.
When the child had grown older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses and explained, “I drew him out of the water.”
