And he dwelt in the wilderness of
Paran: and his mother took
him a wife out of the land of Egypt.
And while he was dwelling in the Wilderness of
Paran, his mother got a wife for
him from the land of Egypt.
And
Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven
ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves?
and
Abimelech asked
him, “Why have you set apart these seven
ewe lambs?”
And it came to pass after these things, that God did
tempt Abraham, and said unto
him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he answered.
And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of
Moriah; and offer
him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
“Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of
Moriah. Offer
him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”
And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and
saddled his
ass, and took two of his young men with
him, and Isaac his son, and
clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told
him.
So Abraham got up early the next morning,
saddled his
donkey, and took along two of his servants and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering and set out for the place God had designated.
And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac. He
himself carried the fire and the
sacrificial knife, and the two of them walked on together.
And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two walked on together.
And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
When they arrived at the place God had designated, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac and placed
him on the altar,
atop the wood.
And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
Just then the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the
lad, neither do thou any thing unto
him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to
him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not
withheld your only son from me.”
And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind
him a ram caught in a
thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered
him up for a burnt offering in the
stead of his son.
Then Abraham looked up and saw behind
him a ram in a
thicket, caught by its horns. So he went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
And the children of
Heth answered Abraham, saying unto
him,
And Abraham stood up, and bowed
himself to the people of the land, even to the children of
Heth.
Then Abraham rose and bowed down before the people of the land, the
Hittites.
That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you.
to sell me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him sell it to me in your presence for full price, so that I may have a burial site.”
And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land.
Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land
And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him,
Ephron answered Abraham,
And Abraham
hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham
weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the
audience of the sons of
Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.
Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and
weighed out for
him the price he had named in the hearing of the
Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the standard of the merchants.
And Abraham was old, and well
stricken in age: and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.
By now Abraham was old and well along in years, and the LORD had blessed him in every way.
And the servant said unto
him,
Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest?
The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came?”
And Abraham said unto
him,
Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.
Abraham replied, “Make sure that you do not take my son back there.
And the servant put his hand under the
thigh of Abraham his master, and
sware to
him concerning that matter.
So the servant placed his hand under the
thigh of his master Abraham and
swore an oath to
him concerning this matter.
And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
“Drink, my lord,” she replied, and she quickly lowered her
jar to her hands and gave
him a drink.
And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.
After she had given him a drink, she said, “I will also draw water for your camels, until they have had enough to drink.”
And she said unto
him, I am the daughter of
Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto
Nahor.
She replied, “I am the daughter of
Bethuel, the son that Milcah bore to
Nahor.”
She said moreover unto
him, We have both straw and
provender enough, and room to
lodge in.
Then she added, “We have
plenty of straw and feed, as well as a place for you to
spend the night.”
And the man came into the house: and he
ungirded his camels, and gave straw and
provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet, and the men’s feet that were with
him.
So the man came to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and feed were brought to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of his companions.
And there was set meat before
him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine
errand. And he said, Speak on.
Then a meal was set before the man, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I came to say.” So
Laban said, “Please speak.”
And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given
him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and
asses.
“The LORD has greatly blessed my master, and he has become rich. He has given
him sheep and cattle, silver and gold, menservants and maidservants, camels and
donkeys.
And
Sarah my master’s wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto
him hath he given all that he hath.
My master’s wife
Sarah has borne
him a son in her old age, and my master has given
him everything he owns.
And I asked her, and said, Whose daughter art thou? And she said, The daughter of
Bethuel,
Nahor’s son, whom Milcah bare unto
him: and I put the
earring upon her face, and the bracelets upon her hands.
Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you?’ She replied, ‘The daughter of
Bethuel son of
Nahor, whom Milcah bore to
him.’ So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists.
And it came to pass, that, when Abraham’s servant heard their words, he worshipped the LORD, bowing himself to the earth.
When Abraham’s servant heard their words, he bowed down to the ground before the LORD.
And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were with
him, and
tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, and he said, Send me away unto my master.
Then he and the men with
him ate and
drank and spent the night there. When they got up the next morning, he said, “Send me on my way to my master.”
And she bare
him Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and
Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah.
and she bore
him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan,
Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.
And his sons Isaac and
Ishmael buried
him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of
Zohar the Hittite, which is before
Mamre;
His sons Isaac and
Ishmael buried
him in the cave of Machpelah near
Mamre, in the field of Ephron son of
Zohar the Hittite.
And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of
him, and
Rebekah his wife conceived.
Later, Isaac prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was barren. And the LORD heard his prayer, and his wife
Rebekah conceived.
And the first came out red, all over like an
hairy garment; and they called his name
Esau.
The first one came out red, covered with hair like a fur coat; so they named
him Esau.
And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
The LORD appeared to Isaac and said, “Do not go down to Egypt. Settle in the land where I tell you.
And the men of the place asked
him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for
Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon.
But when the men of that place asked about his wife, he said, “She is my sister.” For he was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” since he thought to
himself, “The men of this place will kill me on account of
Rebekah, because she is so beautiful.”
And
Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold, of a
surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, She is my sister? And Isaac said unto
him, Because I said, Lest I die for her.
Abimelech sent for Isaac and said, “So she is really your wife! How could you say, ‘She is my sister’?” Isaac replied, “Because I thought I might die on account of her.”
Then Isaac
sowed in that land, and received in the same year an
hundredfold: and the LORD blessed
him.
For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines
envied him.
He owned so many flocks and herds and servants that the Philistines
envied him.
And the herdmen of
Gerar did
strive with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they
strove with
him.
But the herdsmen of
Gerar quarreled with Isaac’s herdsmen and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek, because they
contended with
him.
And the LORD appeared unto
him the same night, and said, I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not, for I am with thee, and will
bless thee, and multiply thy seed for my servant Abraham’s sake.
and that night the LORD appeared to
him and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will
bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of My servant Abraham.”
Then
Abimelech went to
him from
Gerar, and Ahuzzath one of his friends, and Phichol the chief captain of his army.
Later,
Abimelech came to Isaac from
Gerar, with Ahuzzath his
adviser and Phicol the commander of his army.
And they rose up
betimes in the morning, and
sware one to another: and Isaac sent them away, and they departed from
him in peace.
And they got up early the next morning and
swore an oath to each other. Then Isaac sent them on their way, and they left
him in peace.
And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac’s servants came, and told
him concerning the well which they had
digged, and said unto
him, We have found water.
On that same day, Isaac’s servants came and told
him about the well they had
dug. “We have found water!” they told
him.
And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were
dim, so that he could not see, he called
Esau his eldest son, and said unto
him, My son: and he said unto
him, Behold, here am I.
When Isaac was old and his eyes were so weak that he could no longer see, he called his older son
Esau and said to
him, “My son.” “Here I am,”
Esau replied.
My father
peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to
him as a
deceiver; and I shall bring a
curse upon me, and not a blessing.
What if my father touches me? Then I would be revealed to
him as a
deceiver, and I would bring upon myself a
curse rather than a blessing.”
And his mother said unto
him, Upon me be thy
curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go
fetch me them.
His mother replied, “Your
curse be on me, my son. Just obey my voice and go get them for me.”
And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt
him, and said, The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of
Esau.
So Jacob came close to his father Isaac, who touched
him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of
Esau.”
And he
discerned him not, because his hands were
hairy, as his brother
Esau’s hands: so he blessed
him.
Isaac did not recognize
him, because his hands were
hairy like those of his brother
Esau; so he blessed
him.
And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s
venison, that my soul may
bless thee. And he brought it near to
him, and he did eat: and he brought
him wine, and he
drank.
“Serve me,” said Isaac, “and let me eat some of my son’s game, so that I may
bless you.” Jacob brought it to
him, and he
ate; then he brought
him wine, and he
drank.
And his father Isaac said unto
him, Come near now, and
kiss me, my son.
Then his father Isaac said to
him, “Please come near and
kiss me, my son.”
And he came near, and
kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his
raiment, and blessed
him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:
So he came near and
kissed him. When Isaac smelled his clothing, he blessed
him and said: “
Ah, the smell of my son is like the smell of a field that the LORD has blessed.
And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet
scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that
Esau his brother came in from his hunting.
As soon as Isaac had finished blessing
him and Jacob had left his father’s presence, his brother
Esau returned from the
hunt.
And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s
venison, that thy soul may
bless me.
He too made some
tasty food, brought it to his father, and said to
him, “My father, sit up and eat of your son’s game, so that you may
bless me.”
And Isaac his father said unto
him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy
firstborn Esau.
But his father Isaac replied, “Who are you?” “I am
Esau, your
firstborn son,” he answered.
And Isaac
trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken
venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed
him?
yea, and he shall be blessed.
Isaac began to
tremble violently and said, “Who was it, then, who
hunted the game and brought it to me? Before you came in, I
ate it all and blessed
him—and indeed, he will be blessed!”
And Isaac answered and said unto
Esau, Behold, I have made
him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to
him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained
him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?
But Isaac answered
Esau: “Look, I have made
him your master and given
him all his relatives as servants; I have sustained
him with grain and new wine. What is left that I can do for you, my son?”
And Isaac his father answered and said unto
him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the
dew of heaven from above;
His father Isaac answered
him: “Behold, your dwelling place shall be away from the richness of the land, away from the
dew of heaven above.
And
Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing
wherewith his father blessed
him: and
Esau said in his heart, The days of
mourning for my father are at hand; then will I
slay my brother Jacob.
Esau held a
grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given
him. And
Esau said in his heart, “The days of
mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
And these words of
Esau her elder son were told to
Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto
him, Behold, thy brother
Esau, as touching thee,
doth comfort
himself, purposing to kill thee.
When the words of her older son
Esau were relayed to
Rebekah, she sent for her younger son Jacob and told
him, “Look, your brother
Esau is
consoling himself by
plotting to kill you.
And
tarry with
him a few days, until thy brother’s
fury turn away;
Stay with
him for a while, until your brother’s
fury subsides—
Until thy brother’s anger turn away from thee, and he
forget that which thou hast done to
him: then I will send, and
fetch thee from thence: why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?
until your brother’s
rage against you wanes and he forgets what you have done to
him. Then I will send for you and bring you back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?”
And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed
him, and charged
him, and said unto
him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of
Canaan.
So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed
him. “Do not take a wife from the
Canaanite women,” he commanded.
When
Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent
him away to Padan-
aram, to take
him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed
him he gave
him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of
Canaan;
Now
Esau learned that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent
him to Paddan-
aram to take a wife there, commanding
him, “Do not marry a
Canaanite woman,”
And he said unto them, Know ye
Laban the son of
Nahor? And they said, We know
him.
“Do you know
Laban the grandson of
Nahor?” Jacob asked. “We know
him,” they replied.
And it came to pass, when
Laban heard the
tidings of Jacob his sister’s son, that he ran to meet
him, and embraced
him, and
kissed him, and brought
him to his house. And he told
Laban all these things.
When
Laban heard the news about his sister’s son Jacob, he ran out to meet
him. He embraced
him and
kissed him and brought
him to his home, where Jacob told
him all that had happened.
And
Laban said to
him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with
him the space of a month.
Then
Laban declared, “You are indeed my own flesh and blood.” After Jacob had stayed with
him a month,
And
Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for
nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be?
Laban said to
him, “Just because you are my relative, should you work for nothing? Tell me what your wages should be.”
And Jacob served seven years for
Rachel; and they seemed unto
him but a few days, for the love he had to her.
So Jacob served seven years for
Rachel, yet it seemed but a few days because of his love for her.
And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her.
But when evening came,
Laban took his daughter Leah and gave her to Jacob, and he
slept with her.
And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave
him Rachel his daughter to wife also.
And Jacob did just that. He finished the week’s
celebration, and
Laban gave
him his daughter
Rachel as his wife.
And he went in also unto
Rachel, and he loved also
Rachel more than Leah, and served with
him yet seven other years.
Jacob
slept with
Rachel as well, and indeed, he loved
Rachel more than Leah. So he worked for
Laban another seven years.
And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name
Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my
affliction; now therefore my husband will love me.
And Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named
him Reuben, for she said, “The LORD has seen my
affliction. Surely my husband will love me now.”
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the LORD hath heard that I was
hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name
Simeon.
Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has given me this son as well.” So she named
him Simeon.
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.
Once again Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.
And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.
And once more she conceived and gave birth to a son and said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” So she named him Judah. Then Leah stopped having children.
And she gave
him Bilhah her
handmaid to wife: and Jacob went in unto her.
And
Bilhah conceived, and bare Jacob a son.
and
Bilhah conceived and bore
him a son.
And
Rachel said, God hath judged me, and hath also heard my voice, and hath given me a son: therefore called she his name
Dan.
And
Rachel said, With great wrestlings have I
wrestled with my sister, and I have prevailed: and she called his name
Naphtali.
And Leah said, A
troop cometh: and she called his name
Gad.
Then Leah said, “How fortunate!” So she named
him Gad.
And Leah said, Happy am I, for the daughters will call me blessed: and she called his name Asher.
Leah said, “How happy I am! For the women call me happy.” So she named him Asher.
And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet
him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I have
hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
When Jacob came in from the field that evening, Leah went out to meet
him and said, “You must come with me, for I have
hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he
slept with her that night.
And Leah said, God hath given me my
hire, because I have given my
maiden to my husband: and she called his name
Issachar.
Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my
maidservant to my husband.” So she named
him Issachar.
And Leah said, God hath
endued me with a good
dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born
him six sons: and she called his name
Zebulun.
“God has given me a good gift,” she said. “This time my husband will honor me, because I have borne
him six sons.” And she named
him Zebulun.
And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.
She named him Joseph, and said, “May the LORD add to me another son.”
And
Laban said unto
him, I pray thee, if I have found favour in thine eyes,
tarry: for I have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.
But
Laban replied, “If I have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I have learned by
divination that the LORD has blessed me because of you.”
And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me.
Then Jacob answered, “You know how I have served you and how your
livestock have
thrived under my care.
And he set three days journey
betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of
Laban’s flocks.
Then he put a three-day journey between
himself and Jacob, while Jacob was
shepherding the rest of
Laban’s flocks.
And Jacob took
him rods of green
poplar, and of the
hazel and
chesnut tree; and
pilled white strakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods.
Jacob, however, took fresh branches of
poplar,
almond, and plane trees, and
peeled the bark,
exposing the white inner wood of the branches.
And Jacob
beheld the countenance of
Laban, and, behold, it was not toward
him as before.
And Jacob saw from the countenance of
Laban that his attitude toward
him had changed.
And your father hath
deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered
him not to
hurt me.
And although he has
cheated me and changed my wages ten times, God has not allowed
him to
harm me.
And
Rachel and Leah answered and said unto
him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house?
And
Rachel and Leah replied, “Do we have any portion or inheritance left in our father’s house?
Are we not counted of
him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite
devoured also our money.
Are we not regarded by
him as outsiders? Not only has he sold us, but he has certainly
squandered what was paid for us.
And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had
gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had
gotten in Padan-
aram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of
Canaan.
and he drove all his
livestock before
him, along with all the possessions he had acquired in Paddan-
aram, to go to his father Isaac in the land in
Canaan.
And Jacob
stole away unawares to
Laban the
Syrian, in that he told
him not that he fled.
And he took his brethren with
him, and pursued after
him seven days’ journey; and they overtook
him in the mount
Gilead.
So he took his relatives with
him, pursued Jacob for seven days, and overtook
him in the hill country of
Gilead.
