Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
So now, kill all the boys, as well as every woman who has had relations with a man,
But all the women children, that have not
known a man by lying with him, keep alive for
yourselves.
And thirty and two thousand persons in all, of women that had not known man by lying with him.
and 32,000 women who had not
slept with a man.
Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you.
Choose for
yourselves wise, understanding, and respected men from each of your tribes, and I will
appoint them as your leaders.”
So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and
known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over
fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes.
So I took the leaders of your tribes, wise and respected men, and appointed them as leaders over you—as commanders of thousands, of hundreds, of
fifties, and of tens, and as officers for your tribes.
Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.
And the little ones you said would become
captives—your children who on that day did not
know good from evil—will enter the land that I will give them, and they will possess it.
For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.
Indeed, the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. The LORD your God has been with you these forty years, and you have lacked nothing.
But your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I
know that ye have much cattle,) shall
abide in your cities which I have given you;
But your wives, your children, and your
livestock—I
know that you have much
livestock—may remain in the cities I have given you,
Unto thee it was shewed, that thou mightest know that the LORD he is God; there is none else beside him.
You were shown these things so that you would know that the LORD is God; there is no other besides Him.
Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.
Know therefore this day and take to heart that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.
Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations;
Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.
And the LORD will take away from thee all sickness, and will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou
knowest, upon thee; but will lay them upon all them that
hate thee.
And the LORD will remove from you all sickness. He will not lay upon you any of the terrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but He will
inflict them on all who
hate you.
And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness, so that He might humble you and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep His commandments.
And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with
manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers
know; that he might make thee
know that man
doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD
doth man live.
He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you
manna to eat, which neither you nor your fathers had
known, so that you might understand that man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.
Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.
So know in your heart that just as a man disciplines his son, so the LORD your God disciplines you.
Who fed thee in the wilderness with
manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;
He fed you in the wilderness with
manna that your fathers had not
known, in order to humble you and test you, so that in the end He might cause you to
prosper.
A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou
knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of
Anak!
The people are strong and tall, the descendants of the
Anakim. You
know about them, and you have heard it said, “Who can stand up to the sons of
Anak?”
Ye have been
rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you.
You have been rebelling against the LORD since the day I came to know you.
And
know ye this day: for I speak not with your children which have not
known, and which have not seen the
chastisement of the LORD your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, and his stretched out arm,
Know this day that it is not your children who have known and seen the discipline of the LORD your God: His greatness, His mighty hand, and His outstretched arm;
And a
curse, if ye will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not
known.
but a
curse if you disobey the commandments of the LORD your God and turn aside from the path I command you
today by following other gods, which you have not
known.
And the sign or the wonder come to pass,
whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not
known, and let us serve them;
and if the sign or wonder he has spoken to you comes about, but he says, “Let us follow other gods (which you have not known) and let us worship them,”
Thou shalt not
hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to
know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
you must not
listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. For the LORD your God is testing you to find out whether you love Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy
bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul,
entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not
known, thou, nor thy fathers;
If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (which neither you nor your fathers have known,
Certain men, the children of
Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not
known;
that wicked men have arisen from among you and have led the people of their city
astray, saying, “Let us go and serve other gods” (which you have not
known),
And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
You may ask in your heart, “How can we recognize a message that the LORD has not spoken?”
Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.
But you may destroy the trees that you
know do not produce fruit. Use them to build siege works against the city that is
waging war against you, until it falls.
If one be found slain in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it, lying in the field, and it be not known who hath slain him:
If one is found slain, lying in a field in the land that the LORD your God is giving you to possess, and it is not known who killed him,
And if thy brother be not
nigh unto thee, or if thou
know him not, then thou shalt bring it unto thine own house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother seek after it, and thou shalt restore it to him again.
If your brother does not live near you, or if you do not know who he is, you are to take the animal home to remain with you until your brother comes seeking it; then you can return it to him.
The fruit of thy land, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou
knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only
oppressed and
crushed alway:
A people you do not
know will eat the produce of your land and of all your
toil. All your days you will be
oppressed and
crushed.
The LORD shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and stone.
The LORD will bring you and the king you
appoint to a nation neither you nor your fathers have
known, and there you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone.
And the LORD shall
scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have
known, even wood and stone.
Then the LORD will
scatter you among all the nations, from one end of the earth to the other, and there you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have
known.
Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye
drunk wine or strong drink: that ye might
know that I am the LORD your God.
You
ate no bread and
drank no wine or strong drink, so that you might
know that I am the LORD your God.
(For ye know how we have dwelt in the land of Egypt; and how we came through the nations which ye passed by;
For you
yourselves know how we lived in the land of Egypt and how we passed through the nations on the way here.
For they went and served other gods, and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not, and whom he had not given unto them:
They went and served other gods, and they worshiped gods they had not known—gods that the LORD had not given to them.
And that their children, which have not
known any thing, may hear, and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as ye live in the land
whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.
Then their children who do not
know the law will
listen and learn to fear the LORD your God, as long as you live in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”
And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are
befallen them, that this song shall
testify against them as a witness; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed: for I
know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I
sware.
And when many troubles and afflictions have come upon them, this song will
testify against them, because it will not be forgotten from the lips of their descendants. For I
know their inclination, even before I bring them into the land that I
swore to give them.”
For I
know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been
rebellious against the LORD; and how much more after my death?
For I
know how
rebellious and stiff-necked you are. If you are already rebelling against the LORD while I am still alive, how much more will you
rebel after my death!
For I
know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt
yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will
befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the LORD, to
provoke him to anger through the work of your hands.
For I
know that after my death you will become utterly corrupt and turn from the path I have commanded you. And in the days to come,
disaster will
befall you because you will do evil in the sight of the LORD to
provoke Him to anger by the work of your hands.”
They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new gods that came newly up, whom your fathers feared not.
They sacrificed to demons, not to God, to gods they had not known, to newly arrived gods, which your fathers did not fear.
Who said unto his father and to his mother, I have not seen him; neither did he acknowledge his brethren, nor knew his own children: for they have observed thy word, and kept thy covenant.
He said of his father and mother, ‘I do not consider them.’ He disregarded his brothers and did not know his own sons, for he kept Your word and maintained Your covenant.
And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Beth-peor: but no man
knoweth of his
sepulchre unto this day.
And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab facing Beth-peor, and no one to this day
knows the
location of his grave.
And the woman took the two men, and
hid them, and said thus, There came men unto me, but I
wist not whence they were:
But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. So she said, “
Yes, the men did come to me, but I did not
know where they had come from.
And it came to pass about the time of
shutting of the gate, when it was dark, that the men went out:
whither the men went I
wot not: pursue after them quickly; for ye shall overtake them.
At
dusk, when the gate was about to close, the men went out, and I do not
know which way they went. Pursue them quickly, and you may catch them!”
And she said unto the men, I
know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land
faint because of you.
and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given you this land and that the fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who dwell in the land are melting in fear of you.
Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may
know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way
heretofore.
But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between
yourselves and the ark. Do not go near it, so that you can see the way to go, since you have never traveled this way before.”
And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day will I begin to
magnify thee in the sight of all Israel, that they may
know that, as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee.
Now the LORD said to Joshua, “
Today I will begin to
exalt you in the sight of all Israel, so they may
know that I am with you just as I was with Moses.
And Joshua said,
Hereby ye shall
know that the living God is among you, and that he will without fail drive out from before you the
Canaanites, and the
Hittites, and the
Hivites, and the
Perizzites, and the Girgashites, and the
Amorites, and the Jebusites.
Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.
you are to tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’
That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the LORD your God for ever.
He did this so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the LORD is mighty, and so that you may always fear the LORD your God.”
And it came to pass, when the king of
Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he
wist not that there were liers in
ambush against him behind the city.
When the king of
Ai saw the Israelites, he
hurried out early in the morning with the men of the city to
engage them in battle at an appointed place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not
know that an
ambush had been set up against him behind the city.
Then the children of Judah came unto Joshua in
Gilgal: and
Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenezite said unto him, Thou
knowest the thing that the LORD said unto Moses the man of God concerning me and thee in Kadesh-barnea.
Then the sons of Judah approached Joshua at
Gilgal, and
Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You
know what the LORD said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh-barnea about you and me.
And he went up thence to the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher.
From there he marched against the inhabitants of Debir (formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).
The LORD God of gods, the LORD God of gods, he
knoweth, and Israel he shall
know; if it be in rebellion, or if in
transgression against the LORD, (save us not this day,)
“The LORD, the Mighty One, is God! The LORD, the Mighty One, is God! He
knows, and may Israel also
know. If this was in rebellion or breach of faith against the LORD, do not
spare us
today.
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest said unto the children of
Reuben, and to the children of
Gad, and to the children of
Manasseh, This day we perceive that the LORD is among us, because ye have not committed this
trespass against the LORD: now ye have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the LORD.
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest said to the descendants of
Reuben,
Gad, and
Manasseh, “
Today we
know that the LORD is among us, because you have not committed this breach of faith against Him. Consequently, you have delivered the Israelites from the hand of the LORD.”
Know for a certainty that the LORD your God will no more drive out any of these nations from before you; but they shall be snares and
traps unto you, and scourges in your sides, and thorns in your eyes, until ye perish from off this good land which the LORD your God hath given you.
know for sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become for you a
snare and a
trap, a
scourge in your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land that the LORD your God has given you.
And, behold, this day I am going the way of all the earth: and ye know in all your hearts and in all your souls, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the LORD your God spake concerning you; all are come to pass unto you, and not one thing hath failed thereof.
Now behold,
today I am going the way of all the earth, and you
know with all your heart and soul that not one of the good promises the LORD your God made to you has failed. Everything was fulfilled for you; not one promise has failed.
And Israel served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel.
Israel had served the LORD throughout the days of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced all the works that the LORD had done for Israel.
And Judah went against the
Canaanites that dwelt in
Hebron: (now the name of
Hebron before was Kirjath-arba:) and they
slew Sheshai, and Ahiman, and Talmai.
Judah also marched against the
Canaanites who were living in
Hebron (formerly
known as Kiriath-arba), and they struck down Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai.
And from thence he went against the inhabitants of Debir: and the name of Debir before was Kirjath-sepher:
From there they marched against the inhabitants of Debir (formerly known as Kiriath-sepher).
And the house of Joseph sent to
descry Bethel. (Now the name of the city before was
Luz.)
And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.
After that whole generation had also been gathered to their fathers, another generation rose up who did not know the LORD or the works that He had done for Israel.
Now these are the nations which the LORD left, to prove Israel by them, even as many of Israel as had not
known all the wars of
Canaan;
These are the nations that the LORD left to test all the Israelites who had not
known any of the wars in
Canaan,
Only that the generations of the children of Israel might know, to teach them war, at the least such as before knew nothing thereof;
if only to teach warfare to the subsequent generations of Israel, especially to those who had not known it formerly:
And they were to prove Israel by them, to
know whether they would
hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.
These nations were left to test the Israelites, to find out whether they would keep the commandments of the LORD, which He had given their fathers through Moses.
Behold, I will put a
fleece of wool in the floor; and if the
dew be on the
fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I
know that thou
wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.
then behold, I will place a
fleece of wool on the
threshing floor. If there is
dew only on the
fleece and all the ground is dry, then I will
know that You are going to save Israel by my hand, as You have said.”
And the angel of the LORD said unto
Manoah, Though thou
detain me, I will not eat of thy bread: and if thou
wilt offer a burnt offering, thou must offer it unto the LORD. For
Manoah knew not that he was an angel of the LORD.
And the angel of the LORD replied, “Even if I stay, I will not eat your food. But if you prepare a burnt offering, offer it to the LORD.” For
Manoah did not
know that it was the angel of the LORD.
But his father and his mother knew not that it was of the LORD, that he sought an occasion against the Philistines: for at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
(Now his father and mother did not know this was from the LORD, who was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines; for at that time the Philistines were ruling over Israel.)
Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, and said to
Samson,
Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.
In
response, three thousand men of Judah went to the cave at the rock of Etam, and they asked
Samson, “Do you not
realize that the Philistines rule over us? What have you done to us?” “I have done to them what they did to me,” he replied.
Now there were men lying in wait,
abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
brake the withs, as a thread of
tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. So his strength was not
known.
While the men were hidden in her room, she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” But he
snapped the bowstrings like a
strand of yarn
seared by a flame. So the source of his strength remained unknown.
And she said, The Philistines be upon thee,
Samson. And he
awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and
shake myself. And he
wist not that the LORD was departed from him.
Then she called out, “
Samson, the Philistines are here!” When
Samson awoke from his sleep, he thought, “I will escape as I did before and
shake myself free.” But he did not
know that the LORD had departed from him.
Then said
Micah, Now
know I that the LORD will do me good, seeing I have a
Levite to my priest.
Then
Micah said, “Now I
know that the LORD will be good to me, because a
Levite has become my priest.”
And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.
Then they said to him, “Please inquire of God to determine whether we will have a successful journey.”
Then answered the five men that went to
spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye
know that there is in these houses an
ephod, and
teraphim, and a
graven image, and a
molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.
Then the five men who had gone to
spy out the land of Laish said to their brothers, “Did you
know that one of these houses has an
ephod, household gods, a
graven image, and a
molten idol? Now think about what you should do.”
Now as they were making their hearts
merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of
Belial,
beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may
know him.
While they were enjoying themselves, suddenly the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they said to the old man who owned the house, “Bring out the man who came to your house, so we can have relations with him!”
And they found among the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead four hundred young virgins, that had
known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to
Shiloh, which is in the land of
Canaan.
So they found among the inhabitants of
Jabesh-
gilead four hundred young women who had not had relations with a man, and they brought them to the camp at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan.
Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?
At this, she fell on her face, bowing low to the ground, and said to him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you should take notice of me, even though I am a foreigner?”
And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy
nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not
heretofore.
Boaz replied, “I have been made fully aware of all you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband, how you left your father and mother and the land of your birth, and how you came to a people you did not know before.
And her mother in law said unto her, Where hast thou
gleaned to day? and where wroughtest thou? blessed be he that did take
knowledge of thee. And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, and said, The man’s name with whom I wrought to day is Boaz.
Then her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you
glean today, and where did you work? Blessed be the man who noticed you.” So she told her mother-in-law where she had worked. “The name of the man I worked with
today is Boaz,” she said.
Wash
thyself therefore, and
anoint thee, and put thy
raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not
thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.
Therefore wash
yourself, put on
perfume, and wear your best clothes. Go down to the
threshing floor, but do not let the man
know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking.
And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people
doth know that thou art a
virtuous woman.
And now do not be afraid, my daughter. I will do for you whatever you request, since all my fellow townspeople know that you are a woman of noble character.
And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.
So she lay down at his feet until morning, but she got up before
anyone else could recognize her. Then Boaz said, “Do not let it be
known that a woman came to the
threshing floor.”
Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.
“Wait, my daughter,” said
Naomi, “until you find out how things go, for he will not rest unless he has resolved the matter
today.”
And I thought to
advertise thee, saying,
Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou
wilt redeem it,
redeem it: but if thou
wilt not
redeem it, then tell me, that I may
know: for there is none to
redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will
redeem it.
I thought I should inform you that you may
buy it back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to
redeem it, do so. But if you will not
redeem it, tell me so I may
know, because there is no one but you to
redeem it, and I am next after you.” “I will
redeem it,” he replied.
Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not
arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of
knowledge, and by him actions are
weighed.
Do not
boast so proudly, or let
arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who
knows, and by Him actions are
weighed.
Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him.
Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, because the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.
For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he
knoweth; because his sons made themselves
vile, and he restrained them not.
I told him that I would judge his house
forever for the iniquity of which he
knows, because his sons
blasphemed God and he did not restrain them.
And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a
trespass offering: then ye shall be
healed, and it shall be
known to you why his hand is not removed from you.
They replied, “If you return the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away empty, but by all means return it to Him with a guilt offering. Then you will be
healed, and you will understand why His hand has not been lifted from you.”
And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Beth-shemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall
know that it is not his hand that
smote us; it was a chance that happened to us.
but keep watching it. If it goes up the road to its homeland, toward Beth-shemesh, it is the LORD who has brought on us this great
disaster. But if it does not, then we will
know that it was not His hand that punished us and that it happened by chance.”
And it came to pass, when all that knew him
beforetime saw that, behold, he
prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
All those who had formerly
known Saul and saw him
prophesying with the prophets asked one another, “What has happened to the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
Is it not wheat harvest to day? I will call unto the LORD, and he shall send
thunder and rain; that ye may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking you a king.
Is it not the wheat harvest
today? I will call on the LORD to send
thunder and rain, so that you will
know and see what a great evil you have committed in the sight of the LORD by asking for a king.”
And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, I-chabod’s brother, the son of
Phinehas, the son of
Eli, the LORD’S priest in
Shiloh, wearing an
ephod. And the people knew not that
Jonathan was gone.
including
Ahijah, who was wearing an
ephod. He was the son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub son of
Phinehas, the son of
Eli the priest of the LORD in
Shiloh. But the troops did not
know that
Jonathan had left.
And Saul said, Draw ye near
hither, all the chief of the people: and
know and see wherein this sin hath been this day.
Therefore Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the troops, and let us
investigate how this sin has occurred
today.
Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of
Jesse the
Bethlehemite, that is
cunning in playing, and a mighty
valiant man, and a man of war, and
prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
One of the servants answered, “I have seen a son of
Jesse of
Bethlehem who
knows how to play the
harp. He is a mighty man of
valor, a
warrior,
eloquent and handsome, and the LORD is with him.”
And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was
kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down
hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I
know thy pride, and the
naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle.
Now when David’s oldest brother Eliab heard him speaking to the men, his anger burned against David. “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and wickedness of heart—you have come down to see the battle!”
This day will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will
smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may
know that there is a God in Israel.
This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand. This day I will strike you down, cut off your head, and give the
carcasses of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the creatures of the earth. Then the whole world will
know that there is a God in Israel.
And all this assembly shall
know that the LORD saveth not with sword and
spear: for the battle is the LORD’S, and he will give you into our hands.
And all those assembled here will
know that it is not by sword or
spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give all of you into our hands.”
And when Saul saw David go forth against the
Philistine, he said unto
Abner, the captain of the host,
Abner, whose son is this youth? And
Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell.
As Saul had watched David going out to
confront the
Philistine, he said to
Abner the commander of the army, “
Abner, whose son is this young man?” “As surely as you live, O king,”
Abner replied, “I do not
know.”
And David
sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly
knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not
Jonathan know this, lest he be
grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.
But David again
vowed, “Your father
knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘
Jonathan must not
know of this, or he will be
grieved.’ As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”
If he say thus, It is well; thy servant shall have peace: but if he be very
wroth, then be sure that evil is determined by him.
If he says, ‘Good,’ then your servant is safe, but if he is
enraged, you will
know he has evil intentions.
Then Saul’s anger was
kindled against
Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of the
perverse rebellious woman, do not I
know that thou hast chosen the son of
Jesse to thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother’s nakedness?
Then Saul’s anger burned against
Jonathan, and he said to him, “You son of a
perverse and
rebellious woman! Do I not
know that you have chosen the son of
Jesse to your own shame and to the disgrace of the mother who bore you?
