And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

Let there be a
firmament in the midst of the waters, and
let it divide the waters from the waters.
And God said, “
Let there be an
expanse between the waters, to separate the waters from the waters.”
And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered into one place, so that the dry land may appear.” And it was so.
And God said,
Let the earth bring forth grass, the
herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation: seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, each bearing fruit with seed according to its kind.” And it was so.
And God said,
Let there be lights in the
firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and
let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
And God said, “
Let there be lights in the
expanse of the sky to distinguish between the day and the night, and
let them be signs to mark the seasons and days and years.
And
let them be for lights in the
firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
And
let them serve as lights in the
expanse of the sky to
shine upon the earth.” And it was so.
And God said,
Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open
firmament of heaven.

Let the waters
teem with living creatures, and
let birds fly above the earth in the open
expanse of the sky.”
And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and
let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every
creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Then God said, “
Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the
livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.”
And
Cain talked with
Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that
Cain rose up against
Abel his brother, and
slew him.

Cain rose up against his brother
Abel and killed him.
And they said one to another, Go to,
let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and
slime had they for
morter.
And they said to one another, “Come,
let us make bricks and
bake them thoroughly.” So they used brick instead of stone, and tar instead of mortar.
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

let us go down, and there
confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.

And
Abram said unto Lot,
Let there be no
strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.
So
Abram said to Lot, “Please
let there be no
contention between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen. After all, we are brothers.
Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner,
Eshcol, and
Mamre;
let them take their portion.
I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share for the men who went with me—Aner,
Eshcol, and
Mamre. They may take their portion.”
Let a little water, I pray you, be
fetched, and wash your feet, and rest
yourselves under the tree:
Let a little water be brought, that you may wash your feet and rest
yourselves under the tree.
And he said unto him, Oh
let not the Lord be
angry, and I will speak:
Peradventure there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it, if I find thirty there.
Then Abraham said, “May the Lord not be
angry, but
let me speak further. Suppose thirty are found there?” He replied, “If I find thirty there, I will not do it.”
And he said, Oh
let not the Lord be
angry, and I will speak yet but this once:
Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.
Finally, Abraham said, “May the Lord not be
angry, but
let me speak once more. Suppose ten are found there?” And He answered, “On account of the ten, I will not destroy it.”
Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
Look, I have two daughters who have never
slept with a man.
Let me bring them to you, and you can do to them as you please. But do not do anything to these men, for they have come under the protection of my roof.”
Behold now, this city is near to
flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh,
let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.
Look, there is a town nearby where I can
flee, and it is a small place. Please
let me
flee there—is it not a small place? Then my life will be saved.”
Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
Come,
let us get our father
drunk with wine so we can sleep with him and preserve his line.”
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the
firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay
yesternight with my father:
let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Look, I
slept with my father last night.
Let us get him
drunk with wine again
tonight so you can go in and sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”
And God said unto him in a dream,
Yea, I know that thou
didst this in the
integrity of thy heart; for I also
withheld thee from
sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
Then God said to
Abimelech in the dream, “
Yes, I know that you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from
sinning against Me. That is why I did not
let you touch her.
And God said unto Abraham,
Let it not be
grievous in thy sight because of the
lad, and because of thy
bondwoman; in all that
Sarah hath said unto thee,
hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed about the boy and your
maidservant.
Listen to everything that
Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.
And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a
bowshot: for she said,
Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and
wept.
Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a
bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and
wept.
That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you.
to sell me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him sell it to me in your presence for full price, so that I may have a burial site.”
And
let it come to pass, that the
damsel to whom I shall say,
Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also:
let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
Now may it happen that the
girl to whom I say, ‘Please
let down your
jar that I may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well’—
let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”
And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.
So the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please
let me have a little water from your
jar.”
And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
“Drink, my lord,” she replied, and she quickly lowered her
jar to her hands and gave him a drink.
Behold, I stand by the well of water; and it shall come to pass, that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, and I say to her, Give me, I pray thee, a little water of thy pitcher to drink;
Here I am, standing beside this spring. Now if a
maiden comes out to draw water and I say to her, ‘Please
let me drink a little water from your
jar,’
And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master’s son.
and she
replies, ‘Drink, and I will draw water for your camels as well,’ may she be the woman the LORD has appointed for my master’s son.
And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold,
Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; and she went down unto the well, and drew water: and I said unto her,
Let me drink, I pray thee.
And before I had finished praying in my heart, there was
Rebekah coming out with her
jar on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. So I said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’
And she made
haste, and
let down her pitcher from her shoulder, and said, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: so I
drank, and she made the camels drink also.
She quickly lowered her
jar from her shoulder and said, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well.’ So I
drank, and she also watered the camels.
And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; but if not, let me know, so that I may go elsewhere.”
Behold,
Rebekah is before thee, take her, and go, and
let her be thy master’s son’s wife, as the LORD hath spoken.
Rebekah is here before you. Take her and go, and
let her become the wife of your master’s son, just as the LORD has decreed.”
And her brother and her mother said,
Let the
damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.
But her brother and mother said, “
Let the
girl remain with us ten days or so. After that, she may go.”
And they blessed
Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and
let thy seed possess the gate of those which
hate them.
And they blessed
Rebekah and said to her, “Our sister, may you become the mother of thousands upon thousands. May your offspring possess the gates of their enemies.”
And Jokshan
begat Sheba, and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim, and
Letushim, and Leummim.
Jokshan was the father of
Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were the Asshurites, the
Letushites, and the Leummites.
And
Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red
pottage; for I am
faint: therefore was his name called
Edom.
He said to Jacob, “
Let me eat some of that red
stew, for I am
famished.” (That is why he was also called
Edom.)
And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said,
Let there be now an oath
betwixt us, even
betwixt us and thee, and
let us make a covenant with thee;
“We can plainly see that the LORD has been with you,” they replied. “We
recommend that there should now be an oath between us and you.
Let us make a covenant with you
And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s
venison, that my soul may
bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he
drank.
“Serve me,” said Isaac, “and
let me eat some of my son’s game, so that I may
bless you.” Jacob brought it to him, and he
ate; then he brought him wine, and he
drank.
Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and
let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee:
cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.
May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you. May you be the master of your brothers, and may the sons of your mother bow down to you. May those who
curse you be
cursed, and those who
bless you be blessed.”
And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father,
Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s
venison, that thy soul may
bless me.
He too made some
tasty food, brought it to his father, and said to him, “My father, sit up and eat of your son’s game, so that you may
bless me.”
And when
Esau heard the words of his father, he
cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father,
Bless me, even me also, O my father.
When
Esau heard his father’s words, he
let out a loud and bitter cry and said to his father, “
Bless me too, O my father!”
Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.
Give me my wives and children for whom I have served you, that I may go on my way. You know how hard I have worked for you.”
I will pass through all thy flock to day, removing from thence all the
speckled and
spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the sheep, and the
spotted and
speckled among the goats: and of such shall be my
hire.
Let me go through all your flocks
today and remove from them every
speckled or
spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb, and every
spotted or
speckled goat. These will be my wages.
And
Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.
“Agreed,” said
Laban. “
Let it be as you have said.”
And hast not suffered me to
kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done
foolishly in so doing.
But you did not even
let me
kiss my grandchildren and my daughters goodbye. Now you have done a
foolish thing.
With
whomsoever thou findest thy gods,
let him not live: before our brethren
discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that
Rachel had
stolen them.
If you find your gods with
anyone here, he shall not live! In the presence of our relatives, see for
yourself if anything is yours, and take it back.” For Jacob did not know that
Rachel had
stolen the idols.
And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images.
Rachel said to her father, “Sir, do not be
angry that I cannot stand up before you; for I am having my period.” So
Laban searched, but could not find the household idols.
Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee.
Come now, let us make a covenant, you and I, and let it serve as a witness between you and me.”
And he said,
Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not
let thee go, except thou
bless me.
Then the man said, “
Let me go, for it is
daybreak.” But Jacob replied, “I will not
let you go unless you
bless me.”
And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee.
Then
Esau said, “
Let us be on our way, and I will go
ahead of you.”
Let my lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to
endure, until I come unto my lord unto
Seir.
Please
let my lord go
ahead of his servant. I will continue on slowly, at a comfortable
pace for the
livestock and children, until I come to my lord at
Seir.”
And
Esau said,
Let me now leave with thee some of the
folk that are with me. And he said, What needeth it?
let me find grace in the sight of my lord.
“
Let me leave some of my people with you,”
Esau said. But Jacob replied, “Why do that?
Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”
And
Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren,
Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.
Then
Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Grant me this favor, and I will give you whatever you ask.
These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
“These men are at peace with us. Let them live and trade in our land; indeed, it is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters in marriage and give our daughters to them.
Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.
Will not their
livestock, their possessions, and all their animals become ours? Only
let us consent to them, and they will dwell among us.”
And
let us arise, and go up to
Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.
Then
let us arise and go to
Bethel. I will build an altar there to God, who answered me in my day of distress. He has been with me wherever I have gone.”
And the man said, They are departed hence; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brethren, and found them in Dothan.
“They have moved on from here,” the man answered. “I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” So Joseph set out after his brothers and found them at Dothan.
Come now therefore, and
let us
slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, Some evil beast hath
devoured him: and we shall see what will become of his dreams.
“Come now,
let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits. We can say that a
vicious animal has
devoured him. Then we shall see what becomes of his dreams!”
And
Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said,
Let us not kill him.
When
Reuben heard this, he tried to
rescue Joseph from their hands. “
Let us not take his life,” he said.
Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.
Come,
let us sell him to the
Ishmaelites and not lay a hand on him; for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And they agreed.
And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee,
let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What
wilt thou give me, that thou mayest come in unto me?
Not
realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her and said, “Come now,
let me sleep with you.” “What will you give me for sleeping with you?” she inquired.
And Judah said,
Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: behold, I sent this
kid, and thou hast not found her.
“
Let her keep the items,” Judah replied. “Otherwise we will become a
laughingstock. After all, I did send her this young goat, but you could not find her.”
And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the
harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by
whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and
let her be burnt.
About three months later, Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has
prostituted herself, and now she is
pregnant.” “Bring her out!” Judah replied. “
Let her be burned to death!”
Now therefore
let Pharaoh look out a man
discreet and wise, and set him over the land of Egypt.
Now, therefore, Pharaoh should look for a
discerning and wise man and set him over the land of Egypt.
Let Pharaoh do this, and
let him
appoint officers over the land, and take up the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the seven
plenteous years.
Let Pharaoh take action and
appoint commissioners over the land to take a fifth of the harvest of Egypt during the seven years of abundance.
And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.
Under the authority of Pharaoh, let them collect all the excess food from these good years, that they may come and lay up the grain to be preserved as food in the cities.
Send one of you, and
let him
fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are
spies.
Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be confined so that the truth of your words may be tested. If they are untrue, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are
spies!”
If ye be true men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses:
If you are
honest, leave one of your brothers in
custody while the rest of you go and take back grain to
relieve the hunger of your households.
I will be
surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then
let me bear the
blame for ever:
I will
guarantee his safety. You may hold me personally responsible. If I do not bring him back and set him before you, then may I bear the guilt before you all my life.
With
whomsoever of thy servants it be found, both
let him die, and we also will be my lord’s
bondmen.
If any of your servants is found to have it, he must die, and the rest will become slaves of my lord.”
And he said, Now also
let it be according unto your words; he with whom it is found shall be my servant; and ye shall be
blameless.
“As you say,” replied the
steward. “But only the one who is found with the cup will be my slave, and the rest of you shall be free of
blame.”
Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.
Then Judah approached Joseph and said, “Sir, please
let your servant speak personally to my lord. Do not be
angry with your servant, for you are equal to Pharaoh himself.
Now therefore, I pray thee,
let thy servant
abide instead of the
lad a
bondman to my lord; and
let the
lad go up with his brethren.
Now please let your servant stay here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy. Let him return with his brothers.
And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive.
Then Israel said to Joseph, “Finally I can die, now that I have seen your face and know that you are still alive!”
They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to
sojourn in the land are we come; for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is
sore in the land of
Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee,
let thy servants dwell in the land of
Goshen.
Then they said to Pharaoh, “We have come to live in the land for a time, because there is no pasture for the flocks of your servants, since the famine in the land of
Canaan has been severe. So now, please allow your servants to settle in the land of
Goshen.”
The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of
Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.
the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and brothers in the best part of the land. They may dwell in the land of
Goshen. And if you know of any talented men among them, put them in charge of my own
livestock.”
And they said, Thou hast saved our lives: let us find grace in the sight of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.
“You have saved our lives,” they said. “We have found favor in our lord’s eyes, and we will be Pharaoh’s servants.”
And Israel said unto Joseph, I had not thought to see thy face: and, lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed.
“I never expected to see your face again,” Israel said to Joseph, “but now God has let me see your children as well.”
The Angel which redeemed me from all evil,
bless the lads; and
let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and
let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.
the angel who has redeemed me from all
harm— may He
bless these boys. And may they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they grow into a multitude upon the earth.”
Naphtali is a hind
let loose: he giveth goodly words.
My father made me
swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have
digged for me in the land of
Canaan, there shalt thou
bury me. Now therefore
let me go up, I pray thee, and
bury my father, and I will come again.
my father made me
swear an oath when he said, ‘I am about to die. You must
bury me in the tomb that I
dug for myself in the land of
Canaan.’ Now
let me go and
bury my father, and then return.”
Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
Come,
let us deal
shrewdly with them, or they will increase even more; and if a war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.”
And he said, When ye do the office of a
midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.
“When you help the Hebrew women give birth, observe them on the birthstools. If the child is a son, kill him; but if it is a daughter, let her live.”
But the
midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.
The
midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had
instructed; they
let the boys live.
And the king of Egypt called for the
midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?
So the king of Egypt summoned the
midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you
let the boys live?”
And they shall
hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now
let us go, we
beseech thee, three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.
The elders of Israel will
listen to what you say, and you must go with them to the king of Egypt and tell him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Now please
let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.’
And I am sure that the king of Egypt will not let you go, no, not by a mighty hand.
But I know that the king of Egypt will not allow you to go unless a mighty hand compels him.
And I will stretch out my hand, and
smite Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in the midst thereof: and after that he will
let you go.
So I will stretch out My hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders I will perform among them. And after that, he will release you.
And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father in law, and said unto him, Let me go, I pray thee, and return unto my brethren which are in Egypt, and see whether they be yet alive. And Jethro said to Moses, Go in peace.
Then Moses went back to his father-in-law Jethro and said to him, “Please let me return to my brothers in Egypt to see if they are still alive.” “Go in peace,” Jethro replied.
And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will
harden his heart, that he shall not
let the people go.
The LORD
instructed Moses, “When you go back to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders that I have put within your power. But I will
harden his heart so that he will not
let the people go.
And I say unto thee,
Let my son go, that he may serve me: and if thou refuse to
let him go, behold, I will
slay thy son, even thy
