And when he came to the tower, he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: and he let the men go, and they departed.
When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the gifts from the servants and stored them in the house. Then he dismissed the men, and they departed.
Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye.
Please
let us go to the Jordan, where each of us can get a log so we can build ourselves a place to live there.” “Go,” said
Elisha.
If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live; and if they kill us, we shall but die.
If we say, ‘Let us go into the city,’ we will die there from the famine in the city; but if we sit here, we will also die. So come now, let us go over to the camp of the Arameans. If they let us live, we will live; if they kill us, we will die.”
Then they said one to another, We do not well: this day is a day of good
tidings, and we hold our peace: if we
tarry till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king’s household.
Finally, they said to one another, “We are not doing what is right.
Today is a day of good news. If we are silent and wait until morning light, our sin will overtake us. Now, therefore,
let us go and tell the king’s household.”
And the king arose in the night, and said unto his servants, I will now
shew you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we be
hungry; therefore are they gone out of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, When they come out of the city, we shall catch them alive, and get into the city.
So the king got up in the night and said to his servants, “
Let me tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know we are
starving, so they have left the camp to hide in the field, thinking, ‘When they come out of the city, we will take them alive and enter the city.’”
And one of his servants answered and said, Let some take, I pray thee, five of the horses that remain, which are left in the city, (behold, they are as all the multitude of Israel that are left in it: behold, I say, they are even as all the multitude of the Israelites that are consumed:) and let us send and see.
But one of his servants replied, “Please, have scouts take five of the horses that remain in the city. Their
plight will be no worse than all the Israelites who are left here. You can see that all the Israelites here are
doomed. So
let us send them and find out.”
But king
Joram was returned to be
healed in
Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him, when he fought with
Hazael king of Syria.) And
Jehu said, If it be your minds, then
let none go forth nor escape out of the city to go to tell it in
Jezreel.
but King
Joram had returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds he had suffered at the hands of the Arameans in the battle against
Hazael their king.) So
Jehu said, “If you commanders wish to make me king, then do not
let anyone escape from the city to go and tell it in
Jezreel.”
And there stood a
watchman on the tower in
Jezreel, and he
spied the company of
Jehu as he came, and said, I see a company. And
Joram said, Take an
horseman, and send to meet them, and
let him say, Is it peace?
Now the
watchman standing on the tower in
Jezreel saw
Jehu’s troops approaching, and he called out, “I see a company of troops!” “Choose a rider,”
Joram commanded. “Send him out to meet them and ask, ‘Have you come in peace?’”
And
Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. And
Jehu wrote
letters, and sent to Samaria, unto the rulers of
Jezreel, to the elders, and to them that brought up
Ahab’s children, saying,
Now
Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. So
Jehu wrote
letters and sent them to Samaria to the officials of
Jezreel, to the elders, and to the guardians of the sons of
Ahab, saying:
Now as soon as this
letter cometh to you, seeing your master’s sons are with you, and there are with you
chariots and horses, a
fenced city also, and armour;
“When this
letter arrives, since your master’s sons are with you and you have
chariots and horses, a fortified city and
weaponry,
Then he wrote a
letter the second time to them, saying, If ye be mine, and if ye will
hearken unto my voice, take ye the heads of the men your master’s sons, and come to me to
Jezreel by to
morrow this time. Now the king’s sons, being seventy persons, were with the great men of the city, which brought them up.
Then
Jehu wrote them a second
letter and said: “If you are on my side, and if you will obey me, then bring the heads of your master’s sons to me at
Jezreel by this time
tomorrow.” Now the sons of the king, seventy in all, were being brought up by the leading men of the city.
And it came to pass, when the
letter came to them, that they took the king’s sons, and
slew seventy persons, and put their heads in baskets, and sent him them to
Jezreel.
And when the
letter arrived, they took the sons of the king and slaughtered all seventy of them. They put their heads in baskets and sent them to
Jehu at
Jezreel.
Now therefore call unto me all the prophets of
Baal, all his servants, and all his priests;
let none be wanting: for I have a great sacrifice to do to
Baal;
whosoever shall be wanting, he shall not live. But
Jehu did it in
subtilty, to the intent that he might destroy the worshippers of
Baal.
Now, therefore,
summon to me all the prophets of
Baal, all his servants, and all his priests. See that no one is missing, for I have a great sacrifice for
Baal.
Whoever is missing will not live.” But
Jehu was acting
deceptively in order to destroy the servants of
Baal.
And when they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings,
Jehu appointed
fourscore men without, and said, If any of the men whom I have brought into your hands escape, he that
letteth him go, his life shall be for the life of him.
And they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now
Jehu had stationed eighty men outside and
warned them, “If
anyone allows one of the men I am delivering into your hands to escape, he will
forfeit his life for theirs.”
And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, that
Jehu said to the guard and to the captains, Go in, and
slay them;
let none come forth. And they
smote them with the edge of the sword; and the guard and the captains cast them out, and went to the city of the house of
Baal.
When he had finished making the burnt offering,
Jehu said to the guards and officers, “Go in and kill them. Do not
let anyone out.” So the guards and officers put them to the sword, threw the bodies out, and went into the inner room of the temple of
Baal.
And ye shall compass the king round about, every man with his weapons in his hand: and he that cometh within the ranges, let him be slain: and be ye with the king as he goeth out and as he cometh in.
You must
surround the king with weapons in hand, and
anyone who approaches the ranks must be put to death. You must stay close to the king wherever he goes.”
But Jehoiada the priest commanded the captains of the hundreds, the officers of the host, and said unto them, Have her forth without the ranges: and him that followeth her kill with the sword. For the priest had said, Let her not be slain in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest ordered the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
Let the priests take it to them, every man of his acquaintance: and
let them repair the breaches of the house,
wheresoever any breach shall be found.
Let every priest receive it from his
constituency, and
let it be used to repair any damage found in the temple.”
And it came to pass, as they were
burying a man, that, behold, they
spied a band of men; and they cast the man into the
sepulchre of
Elisha: and when the man was
let down, and touched the bones of
Elisha, he revived, and stood up on his feet.
Once, as the Israelites were
burying a man, suddenly they saw a band of raiders, so they threw the man’s body into
Elisha’s tomb. And as soon as his body touched the bones of
Elisha, the man was revived and stood up on his feet.
Then
Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of
Jehoahaz son of
Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come,
let us look one another in the face.
Then
Amaziah sent messengers to the king of Israel Jehoash son of
Jehoahaz, the son of
Jehu. “Come,
let us meet face to face,” he said.
Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land.
Then the king of Assyria commanded: “Send back one of the priests you carried off from Samaria, and have him go back to live there and teach the requirements of the God of the land.”
Thus saith the king,
Let not
Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:
This is what the king says: Do not
let Hezekiah deceive you; he cannot deliver you from my hand.
Neither
let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
Do not
let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the LORD when he says, ‘The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’
Thus shall ye speak to
Hezekiah king of Judah, saying,
Let not thy God in whom thou trustest
deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
“Give this message to
Hezekiah king of Judah: ‘Do not
let your God, in whom you trust,
deceive you by saying that Jerusalem will not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.
And
Hezekiah received the
letter of the hand of the messengers, and read it: and
Hezekiah went up into the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD.
So
Hezekiah received the
letter from the messengers, read it, and went up to the house of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD.
And
Hezekiah answered, It is a light thing for the shadow to go down ten degrees:
nay, but
let the shadow return backward ten degrees.
“It is easy for the shadow to
lengthen ten steps,” answered
Hezekiah, “but not for it to go back ten steps.”
At that time Berodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent
letters and a present unto
Hezekiah: for he had heard that
Hezekiah had been sick.
At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent
letters and a gift to
Hezekiah, for he had heard about
Hezekiah’s illness.
And let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD: and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the LORD, to repair the breaches of the house,
And let them deliver it into the hands of the supervisors of those doing the work on the house of the LORD, who in turn are to give it to the workmen repairing the damages to the house of the LORD—
And he said, Let him alone; let no man move his bones. So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria.
“
Let him rest,” said
Josiah. “Do not
let anyone disturb his bones.” So they left his bones undisturbed, along with those of the prophet who had come from Samaria.
And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, If it seem good unto you, and that it be of the LORD our God, let us send abroad unto our brethren every where, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the priests and Levites which are in their cities and suburbs, that they may gather themselves unto us:
And he said to the whole assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you, and if this is of the LORD our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our brothers in all the land of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites in their cities and pasturelands, so that they may join us.
And let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we enquired not at it in the days of Saul.
Then let us bring back the ark of our God, for we did not inquire of Him in the days of Saul.”
Glory ye in his holy name:
let the heart of them
rejoice that seek the LORD.
Glory in His holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the LORD
rejoice.
He suffered no man to do them wrong:
yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,
Let the heavens be
glad, and
let the earth
rejoice: and
let men say among the nations, The LORD reigneth.
Let the heavens be
glad, and the earth
rejoice.
Let them say among the nations, ‘The LORD reigns!’
Let the sea
roar, and the
fulness thereof:
let the fields
rejoice, and all that is therein.
Let the sea resound, and all that fills it;
let the fields
exult, and all that is in them.
Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.
And now, O LORD,
let the word You have spoken concerning Your servant and his house be established
forever. Do as You have promised,
Let it even be established, that thy name may be
magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and
let the house of David thy servant be established before thee.
so that Your name will be established and
magnified forever when it is said, ‘The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, is God over Israel.’ And may the house of Your servant David be established before You.
Now therefore
let it please thee to
bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.
So now You have been pleased to
bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue
forever before You. For You, O LORD, have blessed it, and it will be blessed
forever.”
Be of good courage, and
let us
behave ourselves
valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and
let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.
Be strong and
let us fight
bravely for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD do what is good in His sight.”
And David said unto
Gad, I am in a great strait:
let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his
mercies: but
let me not fall into the hand of man.
David answered
Gad, “I am deeply distressed. Please,
let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for His
mercies are very great; but do not
let me fall into the hands of men.”
And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have
sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done?
let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father’s house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.
And David said to God, “Was it not I who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has
sinned and acted wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? O LORD my God, please
let Your hand fall upon me and my father’s house, but do not
let this plague remain upon Your people.”
And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and
let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the
threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.
Ornan said to David, “My lord the king may take whatever seems good. Look, I will give the oxen for the burnt offerings, the
threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the grain offering—I will give it all.”
Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.
Now, O LORD God, let Your promise to my father David be fulfilled. For You have made me king over a people as numerous as the dust of the earth.
Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon, Because the LORD hath loved his people, he hath made thee king over them.
Then
Hiram king of Tyre wrote a
letter in reply to Solomon: “Because the LORD loves His people, He has set you over them as king.”
Now therefore the wheat, and the barley, the oil, and the wine, which my lord hath spoken of, let him send unto his servants:
Now let my lord send to his servants the wheat, barley, olive oil, and wine he promised.
Now then, O LORD God of Israel,
let thy word be
verified, which thou hast spoken unto thy servant David.
And now, O LORD, God of Israel, please
confirm what You promised to Your servant David.
Now, my God,
let, I
beseech thee, thine eyes be open, and
let thine ears be
attent unto the prayer that is made in this place.
Now, my God, may Your eyes be open and Your ears
attentive to the prayer offered in this place.
Now therefore arise, O LORD God, into thy resting place, thou, and the ark of thy strength:
let thy priests, O LORD God, be clothed with salvation, and
let thy saints
rejoice in goodness.
Now therefore, arise, O LORD God, and enter Your resting place, You and the ark of Your might. May Your priests, O LORD God, be clothed with salvation, and may Your godly ones
rejoice in goodness.
Therefore he said unto Judah,
Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and
prospered.
So he said to the people of Judah, “
Let us build these cities and
surround them with walls and towers, with doors and bars. The land is still ours because we have sought the LORD our God. We have sought Him and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and
prospered.
And
Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God;
let not man prevail against thee.
Then
Asa cried out to the LORD his God: “O LORD, there is no one besides You to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, O LORD our God, for we
rely on You, and in Your name we have come against this multitude. O LORD, You are our God. Do not
let a mere
mortal prevail against You.”
Be ye strong therefore, and let not your hands be weak: for your work shall be rewarded.
But as for you, be strong; do not be discouraged, for your work will be rewarded.”
In the six and
thirtieth year of the reign of
Asa Baasha king of Israel came up against Judah, and built
Ramah, to the intent that he might
let none go out or come in to
Asa king of Judah.
In the thirty-sixth year of
Asa’s reign,
Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified
Ramah to prevent
anyone from leaving or entering the territory of
Asa king of Judah.
There is a league between me and thee, as there was between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent thee silver and gold; go, break thy league with
Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.
“
Let there be a treaty between me and you, between my father and your father. See, I have sent you silver and gold. Now go and break your treaty with
Baasha king of Israel, so that he will withdraw from me.”
And it came to pass, when
Baasha heard it, that he left off building of
Ramah, and
let his work cease.
And the king of Israel said unto
Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, by whom we may
enquire of the LORD: but I
hate him; for he never
prophesied good unto me, but always evil: the same is Micaiah the son of Imla. And
Jehoshaphat said,
Let not the king say so.
The king of Israel answered, “There is still one man who can ask the LORD, but I
hate him because he never prophesies anything good for me, but only bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.” “The king should not say that!”
Jehoshaphat replied.
And the
messenger that went to call Micaiah spake to him, saying, Behold, the words of the prophets declare good to the king with one assent;
let thy word therefore, I pray thee, be like one of theirs, and speak thou good.
Then the
messenger who had gone to call Micaiah
instructed him, “Behold, with one
accord the words of the prophets are favorable to the king. So please
let your words be like theirs, and speak
favorably.”
Then he said, I did see all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no
shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master;
let them return therefore every man to his house in peace.
So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a
shepherd. And the LORD said, ‘These people have no master;
let each one return home in peace.’”
Wherefore now
let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take
heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of gifts.
And now, may the fear of the LORD be upon you. Be careful what you do, for with the LORD our God there is no injustice or
partiality or
bribery.”
And now, behold, the children of
Ammon and Moab and mount
Seir, whom thou wouldest not
let Israel
invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not;
And now, here are the men of
Ammon, Moab, and Mount
Seir, whom You did not
let Israel
invade when they came out of the land of Egypt; but Israel turned away from them and did not destroy them.
And there came a writing to him from
Elijah the prophet, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of David thy father, Because thou hast not walked in the ways of
Jehoshaphat thy father, nor in the ways of
Asa king of Judah,
Then a
letter came to Jehoram from
Elijah the prophet, which stated: “This is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘You have not walked in the ways of your father
Jehoshaphat or of
Asa king of Judah,
But let none come into the house of the LORD, save the priests, and they that minister of the Levites; they shall go in, for they are holy: but all the people shall keep the watch of the LORD.
No one is to enter the house of the LORD except the priests and those Levites who serve; they may enter because they are consecrated, but all the people are to obey the requirement of the LORD.
Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and
whoso followeth her,
let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said,
Slay her not in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, saying, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
But there came a man of God to him, saying, O king, let not the army of Israel go with thee; for the LORD is not with Israel, to wit, with all the children of Ephraim.
But a man of God came to him and said, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel—not with any of the Ephraimites.
Then
Amaziah king of Judah took advice, and sent to
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz, the son of
Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come,
let us see one another in the face.
Then
Amaziah king of Judah took counsel and sent word to the king of Israel Jehoash son of
Jehoahaz, the son of
Jehu. “Come,
let us meet face to face,” he said.
And
Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and wrote
letters also to Ephraim and
Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, to keep the
passover unto the LORD God of Israel.
Then
Hezekiah sent word throughout all Israel and Judah, and he also wrote
letters to Ephraim and
Manasseh inviting them to come to the house of the LORD in Jerusalem to keep the
Passover of the LORD, the God of Israel.
So the posts went with the
letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the
remnant of you, that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.
So the couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with
letters from the king and his officials, which read: “Children of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so that He may return to those of you who remain, who have escaped the
grasp of the kings of Assyria.
Now therefore
let not
Hezekiah deceive you, nor
persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
So now, do not
let Hezekiah deceive you, and do not
let him mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my hand!”
He wrote also
letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of
Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.
He also wrote
letters mocking the LORD, the God of Israel, and saying against Him: “Just as the gods of the nations did not deliver their people from my hand, so the God of
Hezekiah will not deliver His people from my hand.”
Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.
“This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, who has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, has appointed me to build a house for Him at Jerusalem in Judah.
Whoever among you belongs to His people, may the LORD his God be with him, and may he go up.’”
Who is there among you of all his people? his God be with him, and let him go up to Jerusalem, which is in Judah, and build the house of the LORD God of Israel, (he is the God,) which is in Jerusalem.
Whoever among you belongs to His people, may his God be with him, and may he go to Jerusalem in Judah and build the house of the LORD, the God of Israel; He is the God who is in Jerusalem.
And
whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth,
let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the
freewill offering for the house of God that is in Jerusalem.
And
let every
survivor, wherever he lives, be assisted by the men of that region with silver, gold, goods, and
livestock, along with a
freewill offering for the house of God in Jerusalem.’”
Then they came to
Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them,
Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up
hither.
they approached
Zerubbabel and the heads of the families, saying, “
Let us build with you because, like you, we seek your God and have been sacrificing to Him since the time of King Esar-haddon of Assyria, who brought us here.”
And in the days of
Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto
Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the
letter was written in the
Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the
Syrian tongue.
And in the days of
Artaxerxes king of Persia, Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his associates wrote a
letter to
Artaxerxes. It was written in
Aramaic and then translated.
Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the
scribe wrote a
letter against Jerusalem to
Artaxerxes the king in this sort:
Rehum the commander and Shimshai the
scribe wrote the
letter against Jerusalem to King
Artaxerxes as follows:
This is the copy of the
letter that they sent unto him, even unto
Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
(This is the text of the
letter they sent to him.) To King
Artaxerxes, From your servants, the men west of the Euphrates:
Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the
rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
Let it be known to the king that the Jews who came from you to us have returned to Jerusalem. And they are rebuilding that
rebellious and wicked city, restoring its walls, and repairing its foundations.
Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay
toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt
endamage the revenue of the kings.
Let it now be known to the king that if that city is rebuilt and its walls are restored, they will not pay tribute, duty, or
toll, and the royal treasury will suffer.
The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
The letter you sent us has been translated and read in my presence.
Now when the copy of king
Artaxerxes’
letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the
scribe, and their companions, they went up in
haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.
When the text of the
letter from King
Artaxerxes was read to Rehum, Shimshai the
scribe, and their associates, they went immediately to the Jews in Jerusalem and
forcibly stopped them.
But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to
Darius: and then they returned answer by
letter concerning this matter.
But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, so that they were not stopped until a report was sent to
Darius and written instructions about this matter were returned.
The copy of the
letter that Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and his companions the
Apharsachites, which were on this side the river, sent unto
Darius the king:
This is the text of the
letter that Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates, the officials in the region, sent to King
Darius.
They sent a
letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto
Darius the king, all peace.
The report they sent him read as follows: To King
Darius: All peace.
Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of
Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands.
Let it be known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the house of the great God. The people are rebuilding it with large stones, and placing timbers in the walls. This work is being carried out
diligently and is
prospering in their hands.
And said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be builded in his place.
and
instructed, ‘Take these articles, put them in the temple in Jerusalem, and
let the house of God be rebuilt on its original site.’
Now therefore, if it seem good to the king,
let there be search made in the king’s
treasure house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem, and
let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.
Now, therefore, if it pleases the king,
let a search be made of the royal
archives in Babylon to see if King Cyrus did indeed issue a decree to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. Then
let the king send us his decision in this matter.
In the first year of Cyrus the king the same Cyrus the king made a decree concerning the house of God at Jerusalem,
Let the house be builded, the place where they offered sacrifices, and
let the foundations thereof be strongly laid; the height thereof
threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof
threescore cubits;
In the first year of King Cyrus, he issued a decree concerning the house of God in Jerusalem: Let the house be rebuilt as a place for offering sacrifices, and let its foundations be firmly laid. It is to be sixty cubits high and sixty cubits wide,
With three rows of great stones, and a row of new timber: and let the expences be given out of the king’s house:
with three layers of cut stones and one of timbers. The costs are to be paid from the royal treasury.
And also
let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought unto Babylon, be restored, and brought again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem, every one to his place, and place them in the house of God.
Furthermore, the gold and silver articles of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and carried to Babylon, must also be returned to the temple in Jerusalem and deposited in the house of God.
Let the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in his place.
Leave this work on the house of God alone. Let the governor and elders of the Jews rebuild this house of God on its original site.
And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail:
Whatever is needed—young bulls, rams, and lambs for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, as well as wheat, salt, wine, and oil, as requested by the priests in Jerusalem—must be given to them daily without fail.
Also I have made a decree, that
whosoever shall alter this word,
let timber be pulled down from his house, and being set up,
let him be
hanged thereon; and
let his house be made a
dunghill for this.
I also decree that if any man interferes with this directive, a beam is to be
torn from his house and raised up, and he is to be impaled on it. And his own house shall be made a pile of
rubble for this
offense.
And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people, that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I
Darius have made a decree;
let it be done with speed.
May God, who has caused His Name to dwell there, overthrow any king or people who lifts a hand to alter this decree or to destroy this house of God in Jerusalem. I,
Darius, have issued the decree.
Let it be carried out with
diligence.
Now this is the copy of the
letter that the king
Artaxerxes gave unto
Ezra the priest, the
scribe, even a
scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD, and of his statutes to Israel.
This is the text of the
letter King
Artaxerxes had given to
Ezra the priest and
scribe, an
expert in the commandments and statutes of the LORD to Israel:
Whatsoever is commanded by the God of heaven,
let it be
diligently done for the house of the God of heaven: for why should there be wrath against the realm of the king and his sons?
Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven must be done
diligently for His house. For why should wrath fall on the realm of the king and his sons?
And
whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king,
let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to
banishment, or to
confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment.
If
anyone does not keep the law of your God and the law of the king,
let a strict judgment be executed against him, whether death,
banishment,
confiscation of property, or imprisonment.
Now therefore
let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that
tremble at the commandment of our God; and
let it be done according to the law.
So now
let us make a covenant before our God to send away all the foreign wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who
tremble at the command of our God.
Let it be done according to the Law.
Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.
Let our leaders represent the whole assembly. Then
let everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at an appointed time, together with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God in this matter is turned away from us.”
Let thine ear now be
attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and
confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have
sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
let Your eyes be open and Your ears
attentive to hear the prayer that I, Your servant, now pray before You day and night for Your servants, the Israelites. I
confess the sins that we Israelites have committed against You. Both I and my father’s house have
sinned.
O Lord, I
beseech thee,
let now thine ear be
attentive to the prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, who desire to fear thy name: and
prosper, I pray thee, thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s
cupbearer.
O Lord, may Your ear be
attentive to my prayer and to the prayers of Your servants who delight to
revere Your name. Give Your servant success this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” (At that time I was the
cupbearer to the king.)
And said unto the king,
Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be
sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’
sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
and replied to the king, “May the king live
forever! Why should I not be
sad when the city where my fathers are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”
