expanse of the sky.”

And he called his name
Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and
toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath
cursed.

Noah, saying, “
May this one comfort us in the labor and
toil of our hands caused by the ground that the LORD has
cursed.”
Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee, of all flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every
creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they
may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth.
Bring out all the living creatures that are with you—birds,
livestock, and everything that crawls upon the ground—so that they can spread out over the earth and be fruitful and multiply upon it.”
And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I

Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner,

Eshcol, and
Mamre. They
may take their portion.”
And Sarai said unto
Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my
maid; it
may be that I
may obtain children by her. And
Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
So Sarai said to
Abram, “Look now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Please go to my
maidservant; perhaps I can build a family by her.” And
Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.
And Sarai said unto
Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my
maid into thy
bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was
despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.
Then Sarai said to
Abram, “
May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was
pregnant, she has treated me with contempt.
May the LORD judge between you and me.”

yourselves under the tree.

fetch a
morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.
And I will bring a
bit of bread so that you
may refresh
yourselves. This is why you have passed your servant’s way. After that, you
may continue on your way.” “
Yes,” they replied, “you
may do as you have said.”
For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.

angry, and I will speak:

angry, but let me speak further. Suppose thirty are found there?” He replied, “If I find thirty there, I will not do it.”
And he said, Oh let not the Lord be
angry, and I will speak yet but this once:
Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten’s sake.
Finally, Abraham said, “
May the Lord not be
angry, but let me speak once more. Suppose ten are found there?” And He answered, “On account of the ten, I will not destroy it.”

Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
Come, let us get our father
drunk with wine so we can sleep with him and preserve his line.”
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the
firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay
yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we
may preserve seed of our father.
The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Look, I
slept with my father last night. Let us get him
drunk with wine again
tonight so you can go in and sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”
And he said, For these seven

dug this well.”
I am a stranger and a
sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I
may bury my dead out of my sight.
“I am a foreigner and an outsider among you. Give me a burial site among you so that I can
bury my dead.”
Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our
sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall
withhold from thee his
sepulchre, but that thou
mayest bury thy dead.
“
Listen to us, sir. You are God’s chosen one among us.
Bury your dead in the finest of our tombs. None of us will
withhold his tomb for
burying your dead.”
That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you.
to sell me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him sell it to me in your presence for full price, so that I may have a burial site.”
And he spake unto Ephron in the
audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou
wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money for the field; take it of me, and I will
bury my dead there.

may bury my dead there.”
And let it come to pass, that the
damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I
may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
Now
may it happen that the
girl to whom I say, ‘Please let down your
jar that I
may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”
And he said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and
prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father’s house:
And he told me, ‘The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send His angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you may take a wife for my son from my kindred and from my father’s house.
And she say to me, Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels: let the same be the woman whom the LORD hath appointed out for my master’s son.
and she
replies, ‘Drink, and I will draw water for your camels as well,’
may she be the woman the LORD has appointed for my master’s son.
And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, tell me: and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left.
Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; but if not, let me know, so that I may go elsewhere.”
And her brother and her mother said, Let the
damsel abide with us a few days, at the least ten; after that she shall go.
But her brother and mother said, “Let the
girl remain with us ten days or so. After that, she
may go.”
And he said unto them, Hinder me not, seeing the LORD hath
prospered my way; send me away that I
may go to my master.
But he replied, “Do not delay me, since the LORD has made my journey a success. Send me on my way so that I may go to my master.”
And they blessed
Rebekah, and said unto her, Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those which
hate them.
And they blessed
Rebekah and said to her, “Our sister,
may you become the mother of thousands upon thousands.
May your offspring possess the gates of their enemies.”
And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I
may eat; that my soul
may bless thee before I die.
Then prepare a
tasty dish that I love and bring it to me to eat, so that I
may bless you before I die.”
Bring me
venison, and make me savoury meat, that I
may eat, and
bless thee before the LORD before my death.
‘Bring me some game and prepare me a
tasty dish to eat, so that I
may bless you in the presence of the LORD before I die.’
And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he
may eat, and that he
may bless thee before his death.
Then take it to your father to eat, so that he
may bless you before he dies.”
And Jacob said unto his father, I am
Esau thy
firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my

may bless me.
Jacob said to his father, “I am
Esau, your
firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you
may bless me.”
And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I
may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son
Esau or not.
Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come closer so I can touch you, my son. Are you really my son
Esau, or not?”
And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s
venison, that my soul
may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he
drank.
“Serve me,” said Isaac, “and let me eat some of my son’s game, so that I
may bless you.” Jacob brought it to him, and he
ate; then he brought him wine, and he
drank.
Therefore God give thee of the
dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and
plenty of corn and wine:
May God give to you the
dew of heaven and the richness of the earth— an abundance of grain and new wine.
Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee:
cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.
May peoples serve you and nations bow down to you.
May you be the master of your brothers, and
may the sons of your mother bow down to you.
May those who
curse you be
cursed, and those who
bless you be blessed.”
And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s
venison, that thy soul
may bless me.
He too made some
tasty food, brought it to his father, and said to him, “My father, sit up and eat of your son’s game, so that you
may bless me.”
And God
Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou
mayest be a multitude of people;
May God
Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, so that you
may become a company of peoples.
And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou
mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.
And may He give the blessing of Abraham to you and your descendants, so that you may possess the land where you dwell as a foreigner, the land God gave to Abraham.”

And Jacob said unto
Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I
may go in unto her.
Finally Jacob said to
Laban, “Grant me my wife, for my time is complete, and I want to sleep with her.”
And she said, Behold my
maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees that I
may also have children by her.
Then she said, “Here is my
maidservant Bilhah. Sleep with her, that she
may bear children for me, so that through her I too can build a family.”
And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And
Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes.
But Leah replied, “Is it not enough that you have taken away my husband? Now you want to take my son’s mandrakes as well?” “Very well,” said
Rachel, “he
may sleep with you
tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”
And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.
She named him Joseph, and said, “May the LORD add to me another son.”
And it came to pass, when
Rachel had born Joseph, that Jacob said unto
Laban, Send me away, that I
may go unto mine own place, and to my country.
Now after
Rachel had given birth to Joseph, Jacob said to
Laban, “Send me on my way so I can return to my homeland.
Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.
Give me my wives and children for whom I have served you, that I may go on my way. You know how hard I have worked for you.”
For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the LORD hath blessed thee since my coming: and now when shall I provide for mine own house also?
Indeed, you had very little before my arrival, but now your wealth has increased many times over. The LORD has blessed you wherever I set foot. But now, when may I also provide for my own household?”
Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they
may judge
betwixt us both.
You have searched all my goods! Have you found anything that belongs to you? Put it here before my brothers and yours, that they may judge between the two of us.
And
Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
It was also called
Mizpah, because
Laban said, “
May the LORD keep watch between you and me when we are absent from each other.
The God of Abraham, and the God of
Nahor, the God of their father, judge
betwixt us. And Jacob
sware by the fear of his father Isaac.
May the God of Abraham and the God of
Nahor, the God of their father, judge between us.” So Jacob
swore by the Fear of his father Isaac.
And I have oxen, and
asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I
may find grace in thy sight.
I have oxen,
donkeys, flocks, menservants, and maidservants. I have sent this message to inform my master, so that I
may find favor in your sight.’”
Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of
Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come and
smite me, and the mother with the children.
Please deliver me from the hand of my brother
Esau, for I am afraid that he
may come and attack me and the mothers and children with me.
And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.
You may settle among us, and the land will be open to you. Live here, move about freely, and acquire your own property.”
Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest
peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.
Then Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Live as a widow in your father’s house until my son Shelah grows up.” For he thought, “He may die too, like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s house.
And he turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; (for he knew not that she was his daughter in law.) And she said, What
wilt thou give me, that thou
mayest come in unto me?
Not
realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.” “What will you give me for sleeping with you?” she inquired.
And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.
Under the authority of Pharaoh, let them collect all the excess food from these good years, that they may come and lay up the grain to be preserved as food in the cities.
And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get you down thither, and
buy for us from thence; that we
may live, and not die.
“Look,” he added, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there and
buy some for us, so that we
may live and not die.”
Send one of you, and let him
fetch your brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words
may be proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the life of Pharaoh surely ye are
spies.
Send one of your number to get your brother; the rest of you will be confined so that the truth of your words
may be tested. If they are untrue, then as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are
spies!”
But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words be
verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so.
Then bring your youngest brother to me so that your words can be
verified, that you
may not die.” And to this they consented.
And
Reuben spake unto his father, saying,
Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.
Then
Reuben said to his father, “You
may kill my two sons if I fail to bring him back to you. Put him in my care, and I will return him.”
And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the
lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we
may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.
And Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me, and we will go at once, so that we may live and not die—neither we, nor you, nor our children.
I will be
surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the
blame for ever:
I will
guarantee his safety. You
may hold me personally responsible. If I do not bring him back and set him before you, then
may I bear the guilt before you all my life.
And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it again in your hand;
peradventure it was an oversight:
Take double the silver with you so that you may return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake.
And God
Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he
may send away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be
bereaved of my children, I am
bereaved.
May God
Almighty grant you mercy before the man, that he
may release your other brother along with Benjamin. As for me, if I am
bereaved, I am
bereaved.”
And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he
may seek occasion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for
bondmen, and our
asses.
But the brothers were
frightened that they had been taken to Joseph’s house. “We have been brought here because of the silver that was returned in our bags the first time,” they said. “They intend to overpower us and take us as slaves, along with our
donkeys.”
And he lifted up his eyes, and saw his brother Benjamin, his mother’s son, and said, Is this your younger brother, of whom ye spake unto me? And he said, God be
gracious unto thee, my son.
When Joseph looked up and saw his brother Benjamin, his own mother’s son, he asked, “Is this your youngest brother, the one you told me about?” Then he declared, “
May God be
gracious to you, my son.”
And he said, God
forbid that I should do so: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he shall be my servant; and as for you, get you up in peace unto your father.
But Joseph replied, “Far be it from me to do this. The man who was found with the cup will be my slave. The rest of you may return to your father in peace.”
And thou saidst unto thy servants, Bring him down unto me, that I may set mine eyes upon him.
Then you told your servants, ‘Bring him down to me so that I can see him for myself.’
And we said, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down: for we may not see the man’s face, except our youngest brother be with us.
But we answered, ‘We cannot go down there unless our younger brother goes with us. So if our younger brother is not with us, we cannot see the man.’
That ye shall say, Thy servants’ trade hath been about cattle from our youth even until now, both we, and also our fathers: that ye
may dwell in the land of
Goshen; for every
shepherd is an
abomination unto the Egyptians.
you are to say, ‘Your servants have raised
livestock ever since our youth—both we and our fathers.’ Then you will be allowed to settle in the land of
Goshen, since all
shepherds are
detestable to the Egyptians.”
The land of Egypt is before thee; in the best of the land make thy father and brethren to dwell; in the land of
Goshen let them dwell: and if thou knowest any men of activity among them, then make them rulers over my cattle.
the land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and brothers in the best part of the land. They
may dwell in the land of
Goshen. And if you know of any talented men among them, put them in charge of my own
livestock.”
Wherefore shall we die before thine eyes, both we and our land?
buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be servants unto Pharaoh: and give us seed, that we
may live, and not die, that the land be not
desolate.
Why should we perish before your eyes—we and our land as well? Purchase us and our land in exchange for food. Then we, along with our land, will be slaves to Pharaoh. Give us seed that we
may live and not die, and that the land
may not become
desolate.”
And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will
bless them.
Joseph said to his father, “They are the sons God has given me in this place.” So Jacob said, “Please bring them to me, that I
may bless them.”
And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac did walk, the God which fed me all my life long unto this day,
Then he blessed Joseph and said: “
May the God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my
shepherd all my life to this day,
The Angel which redeemed me from all evil,
bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.
the angel who has redeemed me from all
harm—
may He
bless these boys. And
may they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and
may they grow into a multitude upon the earth.”
And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel
bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as
Manasseh: and he set Ephraim before
Manasseh.
So that day Jacob blessed them and said: “By you shall Israel
pronounce this blessing: ‘
May God make you like Ephraim and
Manasseh.’” So he put Ephraim before
Manasseh.
And Jacob called unto his sons, and said, Gather
yourselves together, that I
may tell you that which shall
befall you in the last days.
Then Jacob called for his sons and said, “Gather around so that I can tell you what will happen to you in the days to come:
O my soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they
slew a man, and in their selfwill they
digged down a wall.
May I never enter their council;
may I never join their assembly. For they kill men in their anger, and
hamstring oxen on a
whim.
The blessings of thy father have prevailed above the blessings of my progenitors unto the utmost bound of the
everlasting hills: they shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him that was separate from his brethren.
The blessings of your father have surpassed the blessings of the ancient mountains and the
bounty of the
everlasting hills.
May they rest on the head of Joseph, on the
brow of the prince of his brothers.
Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
Come, let us deal
shrewdly with them, or they will increase even more; and if a war breaks out, they
may join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the country.”
And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
Then Pharaoh commanded all his people: “Every son born to the Hebrews you must throw into the Nile, but every daughter you may allow to live.”
Then said his sister to Pharaoh’s daughter, Shall I go and call to thee a
nurse of the Hebrew women, that she
may nurse the child for thee?
Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call one of the Hebrew women to
nurse the child for you?”
And he said unto his daughters, And where is he? why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.
“So where is he?” their father asked. “Why did you leave the man behind?
Invite him to have something to eat.”
Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
Therefore, go! I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring My people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
And they shall
hearken to thy voice: and thou shalt come, thou and the elders of Israel, unto the king of Egypt, and ye shall say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath met with us: and now let us go, we
beseech thee, three days’ journey into the wilderness, that we
may sacrifice to the LORD our God.
The elders of Israel will
listen to what you say, and you must go with them to the king of Egypt and tell him, ‘The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Now please let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness, so that we
may sacrifice to the LORD our God.’
And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor
hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee.
Then Moses answered, “What if they do not believe me or
listen to my voice? For they
may say, ‘The LORD has not appeared to you.’”
That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee.
“This is so that they may believe that the LORD, the God of their fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has appeared to you.”
And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe thee, neither
hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe the voice of the latter sign.
And the LORD said, “If they refuse to believe you or
heed the witness of the first sign, they
may believe that of the second.
And I say unto thee, Let my son go, that he
may serve me: and if thou refuse to let him go, behold, I will
slay thy son, even thy
firstborn.
and I told you to let My son go so that he
may worship Me. But since you have refused to let him go, behold, I will kill your
