Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.
So you will follow in the ways of the good, and keep to the paths of the righteous.
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
Wisdom is supreme; so acquire wisdom. And whatever you may acquire, gain understanding.
That thou
mayest regard
discretion, and that thy lips
may keep knowledge.
that you
may maintain
discretion and your lips
may preserve knowledge.
Let thy fountain be blessed: and
rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
May your fountain be blessed, and
may you
rejoice in the wife of your youth:
Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant
roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou
ravished always with her love.
That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.
For wisdom is better than
rubies; and all the things that
may be desired are not to be compared to it.
For wisdom is more precious than
rubies, and nothing you desire compares with her.
That I
may cause those that love me to
inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
The
ransom of a man’s life are his riches: but the poor heareth not
rebuke.
Riches
may ransom a man’s life, but a poor man hears no
threat.
Even in
laughter the heart
may ache, and joy
may end in sorrow.
The way of life is above to the wise, that he
may depart from
hell beneath.
The path of life leads upward for the wise, that he
may avoid going down to
Sheol.
A
fool hath no delight in understanding, but that his heart
may discover itself.
A
fool does not delight in understanding, but only in airing his opinions.
A man that hath friends must
shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother.
All the brethren of the poor do
hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.
All the brothers of a poor man
hate him— how much more do his friends avoid him! He
may pursue them with
pleading, but they are nowhere to be found.
Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
Listen to counsel and accept discipline, that you
may be wise the rest of your days.
The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall
abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.
The fear of the LORD leads to life, that one
may rest content, without
visitation from
harm.
An inheritance
may be
gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.
An inheritance gained quickly will not be blessed in the end.
That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to thee this day, even to thee.
That I might make thee know the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer the words of truth to them that send unto thee?
to show you true and reliable words, that you may soundly answer those who sent you?
Lest thou learn his ways, and get a
snare to thy soul.
Thy father and thy mother shall be
glad, and she that bare thee shall
rejoice.
May your father and mother be
glad, and
may she who gave you birth
rejoice!
For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief.
For though a righteous man
may fall seven times, he still gets up; but the wicked
stumble in bad times.
Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for
thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house.
Complete your outdoor work and prepare your field; after that, you may build your house.
Lest he that heareth it put thee to shame, and thine
infamy turn not away.
lest the one who hears
may disgrace you, and your
infamy never go away.
Do not
boast about
tomorrow, for you do not know what a day
may bring.
My son, be wise, and make my heart
glad, that I
may answer him that reproacheth me.
Be wise, my son, and bring joy to my heart, so that I can answer him who taunts me.
Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and
steal, and take the name of my God in vain.
Otherwise, I
may have too much and deny You, saying, ‘Who is the LORD?’ Or I
may become poor and
steal,
profaning the name of my God.
The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall
pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.
As for the eye that mocks a father and scorns obedience to a mother,
may the ravens of the valley
pluck it out and young vultures
devour it.
Is there any thing
whereof it
may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
Is there a case where one can say, “Look, this is new”? It has already existed in the ages before us.
For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the
sinner he giveth
travail, to gather and to
heap up, that he
may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
To the man who is pleasing in His sight, He gives wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the
sinner He assigns the task of gathering and
accumulating that which he will hand over to one who pleases God. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.
I said to myself, “As for the sons of men, God tests them so that they may see for themselves that they are but beasts.”
And if one prevail against him, two shall
withstand him; and a
threefold cord is not quickly broken.
And though one may be overpowered, two can resist. Moreover, a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
As he came forth of his mother’s
womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he
may carry away in his hand.
As a man came from his mother’s
womb, so he will depart again, naked as he arrived. He takes nothing for his labor to carry in his hands.
If a man
beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
A man
may father a hundred children and live for many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he is unsatisfied with his prosperity and does not even receive a proper burial, I say that a
stillborn child is better off than he.
That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither
may he
contend with him that is mightier than he.
Whatever exists was named long ago, and what happens to a man is
foreknown; but he cannot
contend with one stronger than he.
Also take no
heed unto all words that are spoken; lest thou hear thy servant
curse thee:
Do not pay attention to every word that is spoken, or you
may hear your servant
cursing you.
Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
For the king’s word is supreme, and who can say to him, “What are you doing?”
He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and
whoso breaketh an
hedge, a serpent shall
bite him.
He who digs a pit
may fall into it, and he who breaches a wall
may be
bitten by a
snake.
The one who
quarries stones
may be injured by them, and he who splits logs endangers himself.
Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and
curse not the rich in thy
bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter.
Do not
curse the king even in your thoughts, or
curse the rich even in your
bedroom, for a bird of the air
may carry your words, and a winged creature
may report your speech.
Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth.
Divide your portion among seven, or even eight, for you do not know what
disaster may befall the land.
Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be
glad and
rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
Take me away with you—let us
hurry!
May the king bring me to his chambers. We will
rejoice and delight in you; we will praise your love more than wine. It is only right that they
adore you.
Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof
may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits.
Awake, O north wind, and come, O south wind.
Breathe on my garden and spread the
fragrance of its spices. Let my beloved come into his garden and taste its choicest fruits.
Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women?
whither is thy beloved turned aside? that we
may seek him with thee.
Where has your beloved gone, O most beautiful among women? Which way has he turned? We will seek him with you.
Return, return, O Shulamite; return, return, that we may look upon thee. What will ye see in the Shulamite? As it were the company of two armies.
Come back, come back, O Shulammite! Come back, come back, that we
may gaze upon you. Why do you look at the Shulammite, as on the dance of
Mahanaim?
I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;
I said, “I will
climb the palm tree; I will take hold of its fruit.”
May your breasts be like clusters of the vine, the
fragrance of your breath like apples,
And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are
asleep to speak.
and your mouth like the finest wine.
May it flow smoothly to my beloved,
gliding gently over lips and teeth.
And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of
Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And many peoples will come and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us His ways so that we
may walk in His paths.” For the law will go forth from
Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they
may be placed alone in the midst of the earth!
Woe to you who add house to house and join field to field until no place is left and you live alone in the land.
Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they
may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflame them!
Woe to those who rise early in the morning in pursuit of strong drink, who
linger into the evening, to be inflamed by wine.
That say, Let him make speed, and
hasten his work, that we
may see it: and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw
nigh and come, that we
may know it!
to those who say, “Let Him
hurry and
hasten His work so that we
may see it! Let the plan of the Holy One of Israel come so that we
may know it!”
Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.
By the time He knows enough to
reject evil and choose good, He will be eating curds and honey.
To turn aside the
needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows
may be their prey, and that they
may rob the fatherless!
to deprive the poor of fair treatment and
withhold justice from the
oppressed of My people, to make widows their prey and orphans their
plunder.
And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them.
The remaining trees of its forests will be so few that a child could count them.
Lift ye up a
banner upon the high mountain,
exalt the voice unto them,
shake the hand, that they
may go into the gates of the nobles.
Raise a
banner on a barren
hilltop; call
aloud to them. Wave your hand, that they
may enter the gates of the nobles.
Neither shall there be any work for Egypt, which the head or tail, branch or
rush,
may do.
There is nothing Egypt can do— head or tail, palm or reed.
Take an
harp, go about the city, thou
harlot that hast been forgotten; make sweet
melody, sing many songs, that thou
mayest be remembered.
“Take up your
harp,
stroll through the city, O forgotten
harlot. Make sweet
melody, sing many a song, so you will be remembered.”
The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in.
Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.
Open the gates so a righteous nation may enter— one that remains faithful.
Or let him take hold of my strength, that he may make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.
Or let them lay claim to My protection; let them make peace with Me—
yes, let them make peace with Me.”
To whom he said, This is the rest
wherewith ye
may cause the
weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.
to whom He has said: “This is the place of rest, let the
weary rest; this is the place of
repose.” But they would not
listen.
For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be
wroth as in the valley of
Gibeon, that he
may do his work, his strange work; and bring to pass his act, his strange act.
For the LORD will rise up as at Mount Perazim. He will
rouse Himself as in the Valley of
Gibeon, to do His work, His strange work, and to perform His task, His
disturbing task.
Woe to the
rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they
may add sin to sin:
“
Woe to the
rebellious children,” declares the LORD, “to those who carry out a plan that is not Mine, who form an alliance, but against My will,
heaping up sin upon sin.
Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:
Go now, write it on a
tablet in their presence and
inscribe it on a
scroll; it will be for the days to come, a witness
forever and ever.
And therefore will the LORD wait, that he
may be
gracious unto you, and therefore will he be
exalted, that he
may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him.
Therefore the LORD longs to be
gracious to you; therefore He rises to show you
compassion, for the LORD is a just God. Blessed are all who wait for Him.
But
Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they
may eat their own dung, and drink their own
piss with you?
But the
Rabshakeh replied, “Has my master sent me to speak these words only to you and your master, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are destined with you to eat their own dung and drink their own
urine?”
It
may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of
Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the
remnant that is left.
Perhaps the LORD your God will hear the words of the
Rabshakeh, whom his master the king of Assyria has sent to
defy the living God, and He will
rebuke him for the words that the LORD your God has heard. Therefore lift up a prayer for the
remnant that still survives.”
Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.
And now, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, so that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that You alone, O LORD, are God.”
That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.
so that all may see and know, may consider and understand, that the hand of the LORD has done this and the Holy One of Israel has created it.”
Let them bring them forth, and
shew us what shall happen: let them
shew the former things, what they be, that we
may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come.
“Let them come and tell us what will happen. Tell the former things, so that we
may reflect on them and know the outcome. Or
announce to us what is coming.
Shew the things that are to come
hereafter, that we
may know that ye are gods:
yea, do good, or do evil, that we
may be dismayed, and behold it together.
Tell us the things that are to come, so that we
may know that you are gods.
Yes, do something good or evil, that we
may look on together in dismay.
Who hath declared from the beginning, that we
may know? and
beforetime, that we
may say, He is righteous?
yea, there is none that sheweth,
yea, there is none that declareth,
yea, there is none that heareth your words.
Who has declared this from the beginning, so that we
may know, and from times past, so that we
may say: ‘He was right’? No one
announced it, no one
foretold it, no one heard your words.
Hear, ye
deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye
may see.
Listen, you
deaf ones; look, you blind ones, that you
may see!
Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled: who among them can declare this, and
shew us former things? let them bring forth their witnesses, that they
may be justified: or let them hear, and say, It is truth.
All the nations gather together and the peoples
assemble. Who among them can declare this, and
proclaim to us the former things? Let them present their witnesses to
vindicate them, so that others
may hear and say, “It is true.”
Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
“You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may consider and believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me no god was formed, and after Me none will come.
Put me in
remembrance: let us
plead together: declare thou, that thou
mayest be justified.
Remind Me, let us
argue the matter together. State your case, so that you
may be
vindicated.
They that make a
graven image are all of them vanity; and their
delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they
may be
ashamed.
All makers of idols are nothing, and the things they
treasure are worthless. Their witnesses fail to see or
comprehend, so they are put to shame.
The
carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it
may remain in the house.
The woodworker extends a measuring line; he marks it out with a
stylus; he shapes it with chisels and outlines it with a compass. He fashions it in the likeness of man, like man in all his glory, that it
may dwell in a
shrine.
And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel.
I will give you the treasures of darkness and the riches hidden in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who calls you by name.
That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else.
so that all may know, from where the sun rises to where it sets, that there is none but Me; I am the LORD, and there is no other.
Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the
skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the LORD have created it.
Drip down, O heavens, from above, and let the
skies pour down righteousness. Let the earth open up that salvation
may sprout and righteousness spring up with it; I, the LORD, have created it.
To whom will ye
liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we
may be like?
To whom will you
liken Me or count Me equal? To whom will you compare Me, that we should be alike?
Stand now with thine enchantments, and with the multitude of thy
sorceries, wherein thou hast laboured from thy youth; if so be thou shalt be able to profit, if so be thou
mayest prevail.
So take your stand with your spells and with your many
sorceries, with which you have
wearied yourself from your youth. Perhaps you will succeed; perhaps you will
inspire terror!
And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.
He says: “It is not enough for You to be My Servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the protected ones of Israel. I will also make You a light for the nations, to bring My salvation to the ends of the earth.”
That thou
mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness,
Shew yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places.
to say to the prisoners, ‘Come out,’ and to those in darkness, ‘Show
yourselves.’ They will feed along the pathways, and find pasture on every barren hill.
The children which thou shalt have, after thou hast lost the other, shall say again in thine ears, The place is too strait for me: give place to me that I may dwell.
Yet the children of your
bereavement will say in your hearing, ‘This place is too small for us; make room for us to live here.’
The
captive exile hasteneth that he
may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail.
The
captive will soon be freed; he will not die in the
dungeon, and his bread will not be lacking.
And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I
may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto
Zion, Thou art my people.
I have put My words in your mouth, and covered you with the shadow of My hand, to establish the heavens, to found the earth, and to say to
Zion, ‘You are My people.’”
But I will put it into the hand of them that
afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we
may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.
I will place it in the hands of your tormentors, who told you: ‘Lie down, so we can walk over you,’ so that you made your back like the ground, like a street to be traversed.”
For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.
Though the mountains
may be removed and the hills
may be
shaken, My loving devotion will not depart from you, and My covenant of peace will not be broken,” says the LORD, who has
compassion on you.
Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an
everlasting covenant with you, even the sure
mercies of David.
Incline your ear and come to Me;
listen, so that your soul
may live. I will make with you an
everlasting covenant— My loving devotion promised to David.
Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
Seek the LORD while He may be found; call on Him while He is near.
Let the wicked
forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly
pardon.
Let the wicked man
forsake his own way and the unrighteous man his own thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that He
may have
compassion, and to our God, for He will freely
pardon.
For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and
bud, that it
may give seed to the
sower, and bread to the eater:
For just as rain and snow fall from heaven and do not return without watering the earth, making it
bud and
sprout, and providing seed to
sow and food to eat,
Therefore thy gates shall be open continually; they shall not be shut day nor night; that men may bring unto thee the forces of the Gentiles, and that their kings may be brought.
Your gates will always stand open; they will never be shut, day or night, so that the wealth of the nations
may be brought into you, with their kings being led in
procession.
Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall
inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I
may be
glorified.
Then all your people will be righteous; they will possess the land
forever; they are the branch of My planting, the work of My hands, so that I
may be
glorified.
To
appoint unto them that
mourn in
Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for
mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of
heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be
glorified.
to
console the mourners in
Zion— to give them a crown of beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for
mourning, and a garment of praise for a spirit of
despair. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that He
may be
glorified.
As when the melting fire burneth, the fire causeth the waters to
boil, to make thy name known to thine
adversaries, that the nations
may tremble at thy presence!
as fire kindles the
brushwood and causes the water to
boil, to make Your name known to Your enemies, so that the nations will
tremble at Your presence!
Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the
cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants’ sakes, that I
may not destroy them all.
This is what the LORD says: “As the new wine is found in a
cluster of grapes, and men say, ‘Do not destroy it, for it contains a blessing,’ so I will act on behalf of My servants; I will not destroy them all.
