And it shall come to
pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and
crouch to him for a piece of silver and a
morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
And
everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a
morsel of bread,
pleading, “Please
appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
And it came to
pass at that time, when
Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax
dim, that he could not see;
And at that time
Eli, whose
eyesight had grown so
dim that he could not see, was lying in his room.
And it came to
pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck
brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
As soon as the ark of God was mentioned,
Eli fell backward from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And
Eli had judged Israel forty years.
Therefore they sent the ark of God to
Ekron. And it came to
pass, as the ark of God came to
Ekron, that the Ekronites
cried out, saying, They have brought about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to
slay us and our people.
So they sent the ark of God to
Ekron, but as it arrived, the Ekronites
cried out, “They have brought us the ark of the God of Israel in order to kill us and our people!”
And it came to
pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel
lamented after the LORD.
And from that day a long time
passed, twenty years in all, as the ark remained at Kiriath-jearim. And all the house of Israel
mourned and sought after the LORD.
And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel.
When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges over Israel.
And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.
So Saul
passed through the hill country of Ephraim and then through the land of Shalishah, but did not find the
donkeys. He and the servant went through the region of Shaalim, but they were not there. Then they went through the land of Benjamin, and still they did not find them.
And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to
pass: now let us go thither;
peradventure he can
shew us our way that we should go.
“Look,” said the servant, “in this city there is a man of God who is highly respected; everything he says surely comes to pass. Let us go there now. Perhaps he will tell us which way to go.”
And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.
They got up early in the morning, and just before
dawn Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get ready, and I will send you on your way!” So Saul arose, and both he and Samuel went outside together.
And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul,
Bid the servant
pass on before us, (and he
passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may
shew thee the word of God.
As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on
ahead of us, but you stay for a while, and I will
reveal to you the word of God.” So the servant went on.
After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to
pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a
psaltery, and a
tabret, and a pipe, and a
harp, before them; and they shall
prophesy:
After that you will come to Gibeah of God, where the Philistines have an outpost. As you approach the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place, preceded by harps, tambourines, flutes, and lyres, and they will be
prophesying.
And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all the signs came to pass that day.
And it came to
pass, when all that knew him
beforetime saw that, behold, he
prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
All those who had formerly known Saul and saw him
prophesying with the prophets asked one another, “What has happened to the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
And it was so on the
morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and
slew the
Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to
pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.
The next day Saul organized the troops into three divisions, and during the morning watch they invaded the camp of the
Ammonites and slaughtered them, until the hottest part of the day. And the survivors were so scattered that no two of them were left together.
And it came to
pass, that as soon as he had made an end of offering the burnt offering, behold, Samuel came; and Saul went out to meet him, that he might
salute him.
Just as he finished offering the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to
greet him.
So it came to
pass in the day of battle, that there was neither sword nor
spear found in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and
Jonathan: but with Saul and with
Jonathan his son was there found.
So on the day of battle not a sword or
spear could be found in the hands of the troops with Saul and
Jonathan; only Saul and his son
Jonathan had weapons.
And the garrison of the Philistines went out to the
passage of
Michmash.
And a garrison of the Philistines had gone out to the
pass at
Michmash.
Now it came to
pass upon a day, that
Jonathan the son of Saul said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over to the Philistines’ garrison, that is on the other side. But he told not his father.
One day
Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his
armor, “Come, let us cross over to the
Philistine outpost on the other side.” But
Jonathan did not tell his father.
And between the
passages, by which
Jonathan sought to go over unto the Philistines’ garrison, there was a sharp rock on the one side and a sharp rock on the other side: and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other Seneh.
Now there were cliffs on both sides of the
pass that
Jonathan intended to cross to reach the
Philistine outpost. One was named Bozez and the other Seneh.
Then said
Jonathan, Behold, we will
pass over unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them.
“Very well,” said
Jonathan, “we will cross over toward these men and show ourselves to them.
And it came to pass, while Saul talked unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the Philistines went on and increased: and Saul said unto the priest, Withdraw thine hand.
While Saul was talking to the priest, the
commotion in the
Philistine camp continued to increase. So Saul said to the priest, “Withdraw your hand.”
So the LORD saved Israel that day: and the battle
passed over unto Beth-
aven.
So the LORD saved Israel that day, and the battle moved on beyond Beth-
aven.
And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to
Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and
passed on, and gone down to
Gilgal.
Early in the morning Samuel got up to
confront Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to
Carmel, and behold, he has set up a monument for himself and has turned and gone down to
Gilgal.”
Then said Samuel, Bring ye
hither to me
Agag the king of the
Amalekites. And
Agag came unto him delicately. And
Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is
past.
Then Samuel said, “Bring me
Agag king of the
Amalekites.”
Agag came to him
cheerfully, for he thought, “Surely the bitterness of death is
past.”
And it came to
pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD’S
anointed is before him.
When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and said, “Surely here before the LORD is His
anointed.”
Then
Jesse called Abinadab, and made him
pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
Then
Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel, who said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
Then
Jesse made Shammah to
pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
Next
Jesse presented Shammah, but Samuel said, “The LORD has not chosen this one either.”
Again,
Jesse made seven of his sons to
pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto
Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.
Thus
Jesse made seven of his sons
pass before Samuel, but Samuel told him, “The LORD has not chosen any of these.”
Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a
cunning player on an
harp: and it shall come to
pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
Let our lord command your servants here to seek out someone who can
skillfully play the
harp. Whenever the spirit of distress from God is upon you, he is to play it, and you will be well.”
And it came to
pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an
harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.
And whenever the spirit from God came upon Saul, David would
pick up his
harp and play, and Saul would become well, and the spirit of distress would depart from him.
And it came to
pass, when the
Philistine arose, and came and drew
nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran toward the army to meet the
Philistine.
As the
Philistine started forward to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.
And it came to
pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of
Jonathan was
knit with the soul of David, and
Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
After David had finished speaking with Saul, the souls of
Jonathan and David were
knit together, and
Jonathan loved him as himself.
And it came to
pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the
Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick.
As the troops were returning home after David had killed the
Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs, and with tambourines and other instruments.
And it came to
pass on the
morrow, that the evil spirit from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied in the midst of the house: and David played with his hand, as at other times: and there was a
javelin in Saul’s hand.
The next day a spirit of distress sent from God came upon Saul, and he
prophesied inside the house while David played the
harp as usual. Now Saul was holding a
spear,
But it came to pass at the time when Merab Saul’s daughter should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife.
So when it was time to give Saul’s daughter Merab to David, she was given in marriage to Adriel of Meholah.
Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to
pass, after they went forth, that David
behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.
Every time the
Philistine commanders came out for battle, David was more successful than all of Saul’s officers, so that his name was highly esteemed.
And
Jonathan called David, and
Jonathan shewed him all those things. And
Jonathan brought David to Saul, and he was in his presence, as in times
past.
So
Jonathan summoned David and told him all these things. Then
Jonathan brought David to Saul to serve him as he had before.
And it came to
pass on the
morrow, which was the second day of the month, that David’s place was empty: and Saul said unto
Jonathan his son, Wherefore cometh not the son of
Jesse to meat, neither
yesterday, nor to day?
But on the day after the New Moon, the second day, David’s place was still empty, and Saul asked his son
Jonathan, “Why hasn’t the son of
Jesse come to the meal either
yesterday or
today?”
And it came to
pass in the morning, that
Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little
lad with him.
In the morning
Jonathan went out to the field for the appointment with David, and a small boy was with him.
And it came to
pass, when
Abiathar the son of
Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down with an
ephod in his hand.
See therefore, and take knowledge of all the
lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to
pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.
Observe and find out all the places where he hides. Then come back to me with certainty, and I will go with you. If he is in the land, I will search him out among all the clans of Judah.”
And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.
After Saul had returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, “David is in the wilderness of En-gedi.”
And it came to
pass afterward, that David’s heart
smote him, because he had cut off Saul’s
skirt.
Afterward, David’s conscience was
stricken because he had cut off the corner of Saul’s
robe.
And it came to
pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and
wept.
When David had finished saying these things, Saul called back, “Is that your voice, David my son?” Then Saul
wept aloud And it shall come to pass, when the LORD shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel;
When the LORD has done for my lord all the good He promised, and when He has appointed you ruler over Israel,
But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.
In the morning when Nabal was
sober, his wife told him about these events, and his heart failed within him and he became like a stone.
And it came to
pass about ten days after, that the LORD
smote Nabal, that he died.
About ten days later, the LORD struck Nabal dead.
And David arose, and he
passed over with the six hundred men that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of
Gath.
So David set out with his six hundred men and went to Achish son of Maoch, the king of
Gath.
And it came to
pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight with Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know thou
assuredly, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men.
Now in those days the Philistines gathered their forces for warfare against Israel. So Achish said to David, “You must understand that you and your men are to go out to battle with me.”
And the lords of the Philistines passed on by hundreds, and by thousands: but David and his men passed on in the rereward with Achish.
As the
Philistine leaders marched out their units of hundreds and thousands, David and his men marched behind them with Achish.
And it came to
pass, when David and his men were come to
Ziklag on the third day, that the
Amalekites had invaded the south, and
Ziklag, and
smitten Ziklag, and burned it with fire;
And it came to
pass on the
morrow, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found Saul and his three sons fallen in mount
Gilboa.
The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the dead, they found Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount
Gilboa.
Now it came to
pass after the death of Saul, when David was returned from the slaughter of the
Amalekites, and David had abode two days in
Ziklag;
After the death of Saul, David returned from the slaughter of the
Amalekites and stayed in
Ziklag two days.
It came even to
pass on the third day, that, behold, a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent, and earth upon his head: and so it was, when he came to David, that he fell to the earth, and did
obeisance.
On the third day a man with
torn clothes and dust on his head arrived from Saul’s camp. When he came to David, he fell to the ground to pay him
homage.
I am distressed for thee, my brother
Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful,
passing the love of women.
I
grieve for you,
Jonathan, my brother. You were delightful to me; your love to me was extraordinary,
surpassing the love of women.
And it came to
pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said,
Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto
Hebron.
Some time later, David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” “Go up,” the LORD answered. Then David asked, “Where should I go?” “To
Hebron,” replied the LORD.
Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore
Abner with the hinder end of the
spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the
spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to
pass, that as many as came to the place where
Asahel fell down and died stood still.
But
Asahel refused to turn away; so
Abner thrust the
butt of his
spear into his stomach, and it came out his back, and he fell dead on the spot. And every man
paused when he came to the place where
Asahel had fallen and died.
And
Abner and his men walked all that night through the plain, and
passed over Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and they came to
Mahanaim.
And all that night
Abner and his men marched through the Arabah. They crossed the Jordan, marched all morning, and arrived at
Mahanaim.
And it came to
pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that
Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul.
During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David,
Abner had continued to
strengthen his position in the house of Saul.
And
Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times
past to be king over you:
Now
Abner conferred with the elders of Israel and said, “In the
past you sought David as your king.
And
Jonathan, Saul’s son, had a son that was
lame of his feet. He was five years old when the
tidings came of Saul and
Jonathan out of
Jezreel, and his
nurse took him up, and fled: and it came to
pass, as she made
haste to
flee, that he fell, and became
lame. And his name was Mephibosheth.
And
Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was
lame in his feet. He was five years old when the report about Saul and
Jonathan came from
Jezreel. His
nurse picked him up and fled, but as she was
hurrying to escape, he fell and became
lame. His name was Mephibosheth.
Also in time
past, when Saul was king over us, thou
wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.
Even in times
past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them back. And to you the LORD said, ‘You will
shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over them.’”
And it came to pass, when the king sat in his house, and the LORD had given him rest round about from all his enemies;
After the king had settled into his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him,
And it came to
pass that night, that the word of the LORD came unto
Nathan, saying,
But that night the word of the LORD came to
Nathan, saying,
Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the
sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:
Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.
And after this it came to
pass, that David
smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and David took Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines.
Some time later, David defeated the Philistines, subdued them, and took Metheg-ammah from the hand of the Philistines.
And it came to
pass after this, that the king of the children of
Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his
stead.
Some time later, the king of the
Ammonites died and was succeeded by his son Hanun.
And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and
passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in
array against David, and fought with him.
When this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and went to Helam. Then the Arameans
arrayed themselves against David and fought against him.
And it came to
pass, after the year was
expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent
Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of
Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David
tarried still at Jerusalem.
In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war, David sent out
Joab and his servants with the whole army of Israel. They destroyed the
Ammonites and besieged Rabbah, but David remained in Jerusalem.
And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.
One evening David got up from his bed and
strolled around on the roof of the palace. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing—a very beautiful woman.
And it came to
pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to
Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah.
The next morning David wrote a letter to
Joab and sent it with Uriah.
And it came to
pass, when
Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that
valiant men were.
So as
Joab besieged the city, he assigned Uriah to a place where he saw the strongest enemy soldiers.
And when the
mourning was
past, David sent and
fetched her to his house, and she became his wife, and bare him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.
And when the time of
mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done was evil in the sight of the LORD.
And it came to
pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not
hearken unto our voice: how will he then
vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?
On the seventh day the child died. But David’s servants were afraid to tell him that the child was dead, for they said, “Look, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not
listen to us. So how can we tell him the child is dead? He may even
harm himself.”
And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them
pass through the
brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of
Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.
David brought out the people who were there and put them to work with saws, iron picks, and axes, and he made them work at the brick kilns. He did the same to all the
Ammonite cities. Then David and all his troops returned to Jerusalem.
And it came to
pass after this, that
Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.
After some time, David’s son Amnon fell in love with Tamar, the beautiful sister of David’s son
Absalom.
And it came to
pass after two full years, that
Absalom had sheepshearers in
Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and
Absalom invited all the king’s sons.
Two years later, when
Absalom’s sheepshearers were at
Baal-hazor near Ephraim, he invited all the sons of the king.
And it came to
pass, while they were in the way, that
tidings came to David, saying,
Absalom hath slain all the king’s sons, and there is not one of them left.
While they were on the way, a report reached David: “
Absalom has struck down all the sons of the king; not one of them is left!”
And it came to
pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking, that, behold, the king’s sons came, and lifted up their voice and
wept: and the king also and all his servants
wept very
sore.
And as he finished speaking, the sons of the king came in,
wailing loudly. Then the king and all his servants also
wept very bitterly.
And it came to
pass after this, that
Absalom prepared him
chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.
Some time later,
Absalom provided for himself a
chariot with horses and fifty men to run
ahead of him.
And it came to
pass after forty years, that
Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my
vow, which I have
vowed unto the LORD, in
Hebron.
After four years had
passed,
Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go to
Hebron to
fulfill a
vow I have made to the LORD.
And all his servants
passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from
Gath,
passed on before the king.
and all his servants marched
past him—all the Cherethites and Pelethites, and six hundred Gittites who had followed him from
Gath.
And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.
“March on then,” said David to Ittai. So Ittai the Gittite marched past with all his men and all the little ones who were with him.
And all the country
wept with a loud voice, and all the people
passed over: the king also himself
passed over the
brook Kidron, and all the people
passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.
Everyone in the
countryside was
weeping loudly as all the people
passed by. And as the king crossed the Kidron Valley, all the people also
passed toward the way of the wilderness.
And lo
Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and
Abiathar went up, until all the people had done
passing out of the city.
Zadok was also there, and all the Levites with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God, and
Abiathar offered sacrifices until the people had
passed out of the city.
And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:
When David came to the summit, where he used to worship God, Hushai the Archite was there to meet him with his
robe torn and dust on his head.
Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me:
David said to him, “If you go on with me, you will be a burden to me.
But if thou return to the city, and say unto
Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father’s servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of
Ahithophel.
But you can
thwart the counsel of
Ahithophel for me if you return to the city and say to
Absalom: ‘I will be your servant, my king; in the
past I was your father’s servant, but now I will be your servant.’
And when David was a little
past the top of the hill, behold, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth met him, with a couple of
asses saddled, and upon them two hundred
loaves of bread, and an hundred bunches of
raisins, and an hundred of summer fruits, and a
bottle of wine.
When David had gone a little beyond the summit, Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth was there to meet him. He had a pair of
saddled donkeys loaded with two hundred
loaves of bread, a hundred clusters of
raisins, a hundred summer fruits, and a skin of wine.
And it came to
pass, when Hushai the Archite, David’s friend, was come unto
Absalom, that Hushai said unto
Absalom, God save the king, God save the king.
And David’s friend Hushai the Archite went to
Absalom and said to him, “Long live the king! Long live the king!”
Behold, he is
hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to
pass, when some of them be overthrown at the first, that
whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow
Absalom.
Surely by now he is hiding in a cave or some other
location. If some of your troops fall first,
whoever hears of it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow
Absalom.’
Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying,
Lodge not this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily
pass over; lest the king be
