And Saul said, Draw ye near
hither, all the chief of the people: and know and
see wherein this sin hath been this day.
Therefore Saul said, “Come here, all you leaders of the troops, and let us
investigate how this sin has occurred
today.
Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, and I and
Jonathan my son will be on the other side. And the people said unto Saul, Do what
seemeth good unto thee.
Then Saul said to all Israel, “You stand on one side, and I and my son
Jonathan will stand on the other side.” “Do what
seems good to you,” the troops replied.
And Samuel came no more to
see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel
mourned for Saul: and the LORD
repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
And to the day of his death, Samuel never again visited Saul. Samuel
mourned for Saul, and the LORD
regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.
And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long
wilt thou
mourn for Saul,
seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to
Jesse the
Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
Now the LORD said to Samuel, “How long are you going to
mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to
Jesse of
Bethlehem, for I have selected from his sons a king for Myself.”
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his
stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD
seeth not as man
seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or height, for I have rejected him; the LORD does not see as man does. For man sees the outward appearance, but the LORD sees the heart.”
Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to
seek out a man, who is a
cunning player on an
harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
Let our lord command your servants here to
seek out someone who can
skillfully play the
harp. Whenever the spirit of distress from God is upon you, he is to play it, and you will be well.”
Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have
seen a son of
Jesse the
Bethlehemite, that is
cunning in playing, and a mighty
valiant man, and a man of war, and
prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him.
One of the servants answered, “I have
seen a son of
Jesse of
Bethlehem who knows how to play the
harp. He is a mighty man of
valor, a
warrior,
eloquent and handsome, and the LORD is with him.”
And the men of Israel said, Have ye
seen this man that is come up? surely to
defy Israel is he come up: and it shall be, that the man who killeth him, the king will
enrich him with great riches, and will give him his daughter, and make his father’s house free in Israel.
Now the men of Israel had been saying, “Do you
see this man who keeps coming out to
defy Israel? To the man who kills him the king will give great riches. And he will give him his daughter in marriage and
exempt his father’s house from taxation in Israel.”
And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab’s anger was
kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down
hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know thy pride, and the
naughtiness of thine heart; for thou art come down that thou mightest
see the battle.
Now when David’s oldest brother Eliab heard him speaking to the men, his anger burned against David. “Why have you come down here?” he asked. “And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your pride and wickedness of heart—you have come down to see the battle!”
Your servant has killed lions and bears; this
uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has
defied the armies of the living God.”
And Saul’s servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be a king’s son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?
But when Saul’s servants relayed these words to David, he replied, “Does it
seem trivial in your sight to be the son-in-law of the king? I am a poor man and lightly esteemed.”
But
Jonathan Saul’s son delighted much in David: and
Jonathan told David, saying, Saul my father
seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take
heed to
thyself until the morning, and
abide in a secret place, and hide
thyself:
so he
warned David, saying, “My father Saul intends to kill you. Be on your guard in the morning; find a secret place and hide there.
And I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune with my father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee.
I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where you are, so I can ask about you. And if I find out anything, I will tell you.”
And Saul sent the messengers again to
see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may
slay him.
But Saul sent the messengers back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his bed so I can kill him.”
And David fled from Naioth in
Ramah, and came and said before
Jonathan, What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin before thy father, that he
seeketh my life?
Then David fled from Naioth in
Ramah. He came to
Jonathan and asked, “What have I done? What is my iniquity? How have I
sinned against your father, that he wants to take my life?”
And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not unto the king’s table.
saying, ‘Please let me go, because our clan is holding a sacrifice in the city, and my brother has told me to be there. So now, if I have found favor in your eyes, please let me go and see my brothers.’ That is why he did not come to the king’s table.”
And
Jonathan said to David, Go in peace,
forasmuch as we have
sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my
seed and thy
seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and
Jonathan went into the city.
And
Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for the two of us have
sworn in the name of the LORD, saying, ‘May the LORD be a witness between you and me, and between your descendants and mine
forever.’” Then David got up and departed, and
Jonathan went back into the city.
Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye
see the man is
mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me?
Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you can
see that the man is
insane! Why have you brought him to me?
Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that
seeketh my life
seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in
safeguard.
Stay with me; do not be afraid, for he who seeks your life is seeking mine as well. You will be safe with me.”
Then said David, O LORD God of Israel, thy servant hath certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my sake.
And David said, “O LORD, God of Israel, Your servant has heard that Saul intends to come to Keilah and destroy the city on my account.
And David saw that Saul was come out to seek his life: and David was in the wilderness of Ziph in a wood.
While David was in Horesh in the Wilderness of Ziph, he saw that Saul had come out to take his life.
Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and
see his place where his
haunt is, and who hath
seen him there: for it is told me that he dealeth very
subtilly.
Please go and prepare further.
Investigate and watch carefully where he goes and who has
seen him there, for I am told that he is extremely
cunning.
See therefore, and take knowledge of all the
lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.
Observe and find out all the places where he hides. Then come back to me with certainty, and I will go with you. If he is in the land, I will search him out among all the clans of Judah.”
Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
and Saul and his men went to seek him. When David was told about it, he went down to the rock and stayed in the Wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard of this, he pursued David there.
Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.
So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and went to look for David and his men in the region of the Rocks of the Wild Goats.
And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall
seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the
skirt of Saul’s
robe privily.
So David’s men said to him, “This is the day about which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do with him as you wish.’” Then David
crept up secretly and cut off a corner of Saul’s
robe.
And he said unto his men, The LORD
forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD’S
anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him,
seeing he is the
anointed of the LORD.
So he said to his men, “The LORD
forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD’s
anointed. May I never lift my hand against him, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.”
And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men’s words, saying, Behold, David
seeketh thy
hurt?
and said to Saul, “Why do you
listen to the words of men who say, ‘Look, David intends to
harm you’?
Behold, this day thine eyes have
seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some
bade me kill thee: but mine eye
spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD’S
anointed.
Behold, this day you have
seen with your own eyes that the LORD delivered you into my hand in the cave. I was told to kill you, but I
spared you and said, ‘I will not lift my hand against my lord, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.’
Moreover, my father,
see,
yea,
see the
skirt of thy
robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the
skirt of thy
robe and killed thee not, know thou and
see that there is neither evil nor
transgression in mine hand, and I have not
sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.
See, my father, look at the corner of your
robe in my hand. For I cut it off, but I did not kill you.
See and know that there is no evil or rebellion in my hands. I have not
sinned against you, even though you are hunting me down to take my life.
The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and
see, and
plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.
May the LORD be our judge and decide between you and me. May He take notice and
plead my case and deliver me from your hand.”
Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou
wilt not cut off my
seed after me, and that thou
wilt not destroy my name out of my father’s house.
So now,
swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants or
wipe out my name from my father’s house.”
Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of
Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine
handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou
didst send.
My lord should pay no attention to this
scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his name: His name means
Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your servant, did not
see my lord’s young men whom you sent.
Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth,
seeing the LORD hath
withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from
avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that
seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and you
yourself live, the LORD has held you back from coming to
bloodshed and
avenging yourself with your own hand. May your enemies and those who
seek harm for my lord be like Nabal.
Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to
seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the
bundle of life with the LORD thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he
sling out, as out of the middle of a
sling.
And should someone pursue you and
seek your life, then the life of my lord will be bound securely by the LORD your God in the
bundle of the living. But He shall
fling away the lives of your enemies like stones from a
sling.
So David received of her hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to thine house;
see, I have
hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.
Then David accepted from her hand what she had brought him, and he said to her, “Go home in peace.
See, I have
heeded your voice and granted your request.”
Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.
So Saul, accompanied by three thousand chosen men of Israel, went down to the Wilderness of Ziph to search for David there.
This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD’S
anointed. And now
see where the king’s
spear is, and the
cruse of water that was at his
bolster.
This thing you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, all of you deserve to die, since you did not protect your lord, the LORD’s
anointed. Now look around. Where are the king’s
spear and water
jug that were by his head?”
Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD: for the king of Israel is come out to
seek a
flea, as when one
doth hunt a
partridge in the mountains.
So do not let my blood fall to the ground far from the presence of the LORD. For the king of Israel has come out to look for a
flea, like one who hunts a
partridge in the mountains.”
And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall
despair of me, to
seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.
David, however, said to himself, “One of these days now I will be swept away by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will stop searching for me all over Israel, and I will slip out of his hand.”
Then said Saul unto his servants,
Seek me a woman that hath a familiar spirit, that I may go to her, and
enquire of her. And his servants said to him, Behold, there is a woman that hath a familiar spirit at
Endor.
Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I can go and
consult her.” “There is a medium at
Endor,” his servants replied.
And the king said unto her, Be not afraid: for what sawest thou? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods ascending out of the earth.
“Do not be afraid,” the king replied. “What do you see?” “I see a god coming up out of the earth,” the woman answered.
Then said Samuel, Wherefore then
dost thou ask of me,
seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?
“Why do you
consult me,” asked Samuel, “since the LORD has turned away from you and become your enemy?
Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not.
So Achish summoned David and told him, “As surely as the LORD lives, you have been upright in my sight, and it seems right that you should march in and out with me in the army, because I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me until this day. But you have no favor in the sight of the leaders.
And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul’s daughter, when thou comest to see my face.
“Good,” replied David, “I will make a covenant with you. But there is one thing I require of you: Do not appear before me unless you bring Saul’s daughter Michal when you come to see me.”
And
Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and
Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in
Hebron all that
seemed good to Israel, and that
seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin.
Abner also spoke to the Benjamites and went to
Hebron to tell David all that
seemed good to Israel and to the whole house of Benjamin.
When
Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told
Joab, saying,
Abner the son of
Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace.
When
Joab and all his troops arrived, he was informed, “
Abner son of
Ner came to
see the king, who sent him on his way in peace.”
And they brought the head of
Ish-bosheth unto David to
Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of
Ish-bosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath
avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his
seed.
They brought the head of
Ish-bosheth to David at
Hebron and said to the king, “Here is the head of
Ish-bosheth son of Saul, your enemy who sought your life.
Today the LORD has granted
vengeance to my lord the king against Saul and his offspring.”
But when the Philistines heard that they had
anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to
seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.
When the Philistines heard that David had been
anointed king over Israel, they all went in search of him; but David learned of this and went down to the
stronghold.
That the king said unto
Nathan the prophet,
See now, I dwell in an house of
cedar, but the ark of God dwelleth within curtains.
he said to
Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of
cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”
And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy
seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy
bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
And when your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your
descendant after you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.
Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.
Be strong and let us fight
bravely for our people and for the cities of our God. May the LORD do what is good in His sight.”
And Amnon was so
vexed, that he fell sick for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought it hard for him to do any thing to her.
Amnon was sick with
frustration over his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it
seemed implausible for him to do anything to her.
And Jonadab said unto him, Lay thee down on thy bed, and make
thyself sick: and when thy father cometh to
see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat in my sight, that I may
see it, and eat it at her hand.
Jonadab told him, “Lie down on your bed and pretend you are ill. When your father comes to see you, say to him, ‘Please let my sister Tamar come and give me something to eat. Let her prepare it in my sight so I may watch her and eat it from her hand.’”
So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let Tamar my sister come, and make me a couple of cakes in my sight, that I may eat at her hand.
So Amnon lay down and
feigned illness. When the king came to
see him, Amnon said, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight, so that I may eat from her hand.”
But
Absalom fled. And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the hill side behind him.
Meanwhile,
Absalom had fled. When the young man standing watch looked up, he saw many people coming down the road west of him, along the side of the hill. And the
watchman went and reported to the king, “I
see men coming from the direction of Horonaim, along the side of the hill.”
And the soul of king David longed to go forth unto
Absalom: for he was comforted concerning Amnon,
seeing he was dead.
And King David longed to go to
Absalom, for he had been
consoled over Amnon’s death.
And the king said, Let him turn to his own house, and let him not
see my face. So
Absalom returned to his own house, and saw not the king’s face.
But the king added, “He may return to his house, but he must not
see my face.” So
Absalom returned to his own house, but he did not
see the king.
So
Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, and saw not the king’s face.
Now
Absalom lived in Jerusalem two years without
seeing the face of the king.
Therefore he said unto his servants,
See,
Joab’s field is near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. And
Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.
Then
Absalom said to his servants, “Look,
Joab’s field is next to mine, and he has barley there. Go and set it on fire!” And
Absalom’s servants set the field on fire.
And
Absalom answered
Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come
hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me
see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
“Look,” said
Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there.’ So now, let me
see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”
And
Absalom said unto him,
See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man
deputed of the king to hear thee.
Absalom would say, “Look, your claims are good and right, but the king has no deputy to hear you.”
Whereas thou camest but
yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us?
seeing I go
whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
In fact, you arrived only
yesterday; should I make you
wander around with us
today while I do not know where I am going? Go back and take your brothers with you. May the LORD show you loving devotion and faithfulness.”
And the king said unto
Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again, and
shew me both it, and his
habitation:
Then the king said to
Zadok, “Return the ark of God to the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the LORD, He will bring me back and let me
see both it and His dwelling place again.
But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.
But if He should say, ‘I do not delight in you,’ then here I am; let Him do to me whatever seems good to Him.”
The king said also unto
Zadok the priest, Art not thou a
seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you,
Ahimaaz thy son, and
Jonathan the son of
Abiathar.
See, I will
tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to
certify me.
See, I will wait at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.”
The LORD hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose
stead thou hast reigned; and the LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of
Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a
bloody man.
The LORD has paid you back for all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned, and the LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of your son
Absalom.
See, you have come to ruin because you are a man of
bloodshed!”
And David said to
Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, which came forth of my
bowels,
seeketh my life: how much more now may this
Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him
curse; for the LORD hath
bidden him.
Then David said to
Abishai and to all his servants, “Behold, my own son, my own flesh and blood,
seeks my life. How much more, then, this
Benjamite! Leave him alone and let him
curse me, for the LORD has told him so.
It may be that the LORD will look on mine
affliction, and that the LORD will requite me good for his
cursing this day.
And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.
and bring all the people back to you as a
bride returning to her husband. You
seek the life of only one man; then all the people will be at peace.”
And the saying pleased
Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.
This proposal
seemed good to
Absalom and all the elders of Israel.
Now
Jonathan and
Ahimaaz stayed by En-rogel; for they might not be
seen to come into the city: and a
wench went and told them; and they went and told king David.
Now
Jonathan and
Ahimaaz were staying at En-rogel, where a servant
girl would come and pass along information to them. They in turn would go and inform King David, for they
dared not be
seen entering the city.
Nevertheless a
lad saw them, and told
Absalom: but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man’s house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court;
whither they went down.
But a young man did
see them and told
Absalom. So the two left quickly and came to the house of a man in Bahurim. He had a well in his
courtyard, and they
climbed down into it.
And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people came out by hundreds and by thousands.
“I will do whatever seems best to you,” the king replied. So he stood beside the gate, while all the troops marched out by hundreds and by thousands.
Then said
Joab to Cushi, Go tell the king what thou hast
seen. And Cushi bowed himself unto
Joab, and ran.
So
Joab said to a
Cushite, “Go, tell the king what you have
seen.” The
Cushite bowed to
Joab and took off running.
Ahimaaz son of
Zadok, however,
persisted and said to
Joab, “Regardless of whatever may happen, please let me also run behind the
Cushite!” “My son,”
Joab replied, “why do you want to run, since you will not receive a reward?”
And king David sent to
Zadok and to
Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house?
seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house.
Then King David sent this message to
Zadok and
Abiathar, the priests: “Say to the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to restore the king to his palace, since the talk of all Israel has reached the king at his quarters?
Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.
Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.”
And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall
seem good unto thee: and
whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.
The king replied, “Chimham will cross over with me, and I will do for him what seems good in your sight, and I will do for you whatever you desire of me.”
Then she spake, saying, They were
wont to speak in old time, saying, They shall surely ask counsel at
Abel: and so they ended the matter.
Then the woman said, “Long ago they used to say, ‘
Seek counsel at
Abel,’ and that is how disputes were settled.
I am one of them that are peaceable and faithful in Israel: thou
seekest to destroy a city and a mother in Israel: why
wilt thou
swallow up the inheritance of the LORD?
I am among the peaceable and faithful in Israel, but you are trying to destroy a city that is a mother in Israel. Why would you
swallow up the LORD’s inheritance?”
And he
rode upon a
cherub, and did fly: and he was
seen upon the wings of the wind.
He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his
anointed, unto David, and to his
seed for
evermore.
Great salvation He brings to His king. He shows loving devotion to His
anointed, to David and his descendants
forever.”
And
Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many
soever they be, an
hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may
see it: but why
doth my lord the king delight in this thing?
But
Joab replied to the king, “May the LORD your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the king
see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”
For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet
Gad, David’s
seer, saying,
When David got up in the morning, a revelation from the LORD had come to
Gad the prophet, David’s
seer:
So
Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or
wilt thou
flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days’
pestilence in thy land? now
advise, and
see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.
So
Gad went and said to David, “Do you choose to
endure three years of famine in your land, three months of
fleeing the pursuit of your enemies, or three days of plague upon your land? Now then, think it over and decide how I should reply to Him who sent me.”
And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what
seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and
threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.
Araunah said to David, “My lord the king may take whatever
seems good and offer it up. Here are the oxen for a burnt offering and the
threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood.
And Bath-
sheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and
Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.
So Bathsheba went to
see the king in his
bedroom. Since the king was very old,
Abishag the Shunammite was serving him.
And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.
saying, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel!
Today He has provided one to sit on my throne, and my eyes have
seen it.’”
Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of
Joab, and upon the head of his
seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his
seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.
Their blood will come back upon the heads of
Joab and his descendants
forever; but for David, his descendants, his house, and his throne, there shall be peace from the LORD
forever.”
And Shimei arose, and
saddled his
ass, and went to
Gath to Achish to
seek his servants: and Shimei went, and brought his servants from
Gath.
So Shimei
saddled his
donkey and set out to Achish at
Gath in search of his slaves, and he brought them back from
Gath.
And the
cedar of the house within was carved with knops and open flowers: all was
cedar; there was no stone
seen.
The
cedar paneling inside the temple was carved with gourds and open flowers. Everything was
cedar; not a stone could be
seen.
And they drew out the
staves, that the ends of the
staves were
seen out in the holy place before the
oracle, and they were not
seen without: and there they are unto this day.
The poles extended far enough that their ends were visible from the Holy Place in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are there to this day.
And
Hiram came out from Tyre to
see the cities which Solomon had given him; and they pleased him not.
So
Hiram went out from Tyre to
inspect the towns that Solomon had given him, but he was not pleased with them.
And when the queen of
Sheba had
seen all Solomon’s wisdom, and the house that he had built,
When the queen of
Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon, the palace he had built,
Howbeit I believed not the words, until I came, and mine eyes had
seen it: and, behold, the half was not told me: thy wisdom and prosperity exceedeth the fame which I heard.
But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told to me. Your wisdom and prosperity have far exceeded the report I heard.
And the king made of the
almug trees pillars for the house of the LORD, and for the king’s house, harps also and
psalteries for singers: there came no such
almug trees, nor were
seen unto this day.
The king made the
almug wood into steps for the house of the LORD and for the king’s palace, and into lyres and harps for the singers. Never before had such
almug wood been brought in, nor has such been
seen to this day.)
Then Pharaoh said unto him, But what hast thou lacked with me, that, behold, thou
seekest to go to thine own country? And he answered, Nothing:
howbeit let me go in any wise.
But Pharaoh asked him, “What have you lacked here with me that you suddenly want to go back to your own country?” “Nothing,”
Hadad replied, “but please let me go.”
