Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah,
Sherebiah, Hodijah,
Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and
bless the LORD your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is
exalted above all blessing and praise.
Then the Levites—Jeshua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah,
Sherebiah, Hodiah,
Shebaniah, and Pethahiah—said, “Stand up and
bless the LORD your God from

And
shewedst signs and wonders upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So
didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day.
You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, all his officials, and all the people of his land, for You knew they had acted with
arrogance against our fathers. You made a name for
Yourself that endures to this day.
Yet thou in thy
manifold mercies forsookest them not in the wilderness: the
pillar of the cloud departed not from them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the
pillar of fire by night, to
shew them light, and the way wherein they should go.
You in Your great
compassion did not
forsake them in the wilderness. By day the
pillar of cloud never turned away from guiding them on their path; and by the night the
pillar of fire
illuminated the way they should go.

And I made treasurers over the
treasuries,
Shelemiah the priest, and
Zadok the
scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.
I appointed as treasurers over the storerooms
Shelemiah the priest,
Zadok the
scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, with Hanan son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah, to assist them, because they were considered
trustworthy. They were responsible for distributing the supplies to their fellow Levites.
In those days saw I in Judah some
treading winepresses on the sabbath, and bringing in
sheaves, and
lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I
testified against them in the day wherein they sold
victuals.
In those days I saw people in Judah
treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on
donkeys, along with wine, grapes, and figs. All kinds of goods were being brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I
warned them against selling food on that day.
When he
shewed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majesty many days, even an hundred and
fourscore days.
And for a full 180 days he displayed the glorious riches of his kingdom and the magnificent
splendor of his greatness.
To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to
shew the people and the princes her beauty: for
she was fair to look on.
to bring Queen Vashti before him, wearing her royal crown, to display her beauty to the people and officials. For she was beautiful to behold.
And the next unto him was Carshena,
Shethar, Admatha,
Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, which saw the king’s face, and which sat the first in the kingdom;)
His closest advisors were Carshena,
Shethar, Admatha,
Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media who had personal access to the king and ranked highest in the kingdom.
What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because
she hath not performed the commandment of the king
Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?
“According to law,” he asked, “what should be done with Queen Vashti, since
she refused to obey the command of King
Xerxes delivered by the eunuchs?”
For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall
despise their husbands in their eyes, when it shall be reported, The king
Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but
she came not.
For the conduct of the queen will become known to all women, causing them to
despise their husbands and say, ‘King
Xerxes ordered Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but
she did not come.’
If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king
Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than
she.
So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree, and let it be recorded in the laws of Persia and Media so that it cannot be
repealed, that Vashti shall never again enter the presence of King
Xerxes, and that her royal position shall be given to a woman better than
she.
After these things, when the wrath of king
Ahasuerus was
appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what
she had done, and what was decreed against her.
Some time later, when the anger of King
Xerxes had
subsided, he remembered Vashti and what
she had done, and what had been decreed against her.
And he brought up Hadassah, that is,
Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for
she had neither father nor mother, and the
maid was fair and beautiful; whom
Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.
And
Mordecai had brought up Hadassah (that is,
Esther), the daughter of his uncle, because
she did not have a father or mother. The young woman was lovely in form and appearance, and when her father and mother had died,
Mordecai had taken her in as his own daughter.
And the
maiden pleased him, and
she obtained kindness of him; and he speedily gave her her things for
purification, with such things as belonged to her, and seven maidens, which were meet to be given her, out of the king’s house: and he preferred her and her maids unto the best place of the house of the women.
And the young woman pleased him and obtained his favor, so he quickly provided her with beauty treatments and the special diet. He assigned to her seven select maidservants from the palace and transferred her with them to the best place in the
harem.
Esther had not
shewed her people nor her kindred: for
Mordecai had charged her that
she should not
shew it.
Now when every
maid’s turn was come to go in to king
Ahasuerus, after that
she had been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of
myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the
purifying of the women;)
In the twelve months before her turn to go to King
Xerxes, the
harem regulation required each young woman to receive beauty treatments with oil of
myrrh for six months, and then with perfumes and cosmetics for another six months.
Then thus came every
maiden unto the king;
whatsoever she desired was given her to go with her out of the house of the women unto the king’s house.
When the young woman would go to the king,
she was given whatever
she requested to take with her from the
harem to the king’s palace.
In the evening
she went, and on the
morrow she returned into the second house of the women, to the
custody of Shaashgaz, the king’s
chamberlain, which kept the concubines:
she came in unto the king no more, except the king delighted in her, and that
she were called by name.
She would go there in the evening, and in the morning
she would return to a second
harem under the care of Shaashgaz, the king’s
eunuch in charge of the concubines.
She would not return to the king unless he delighted in her and summoned her by name.
Now when the turn of
Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of
Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king,
she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s
chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And
Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked upon her.
Now
Esther was the daughter of Abihail, the uncle from whom
Mordecai had adopted her as his own daughter. And when it was her turn to go to the king,
she did not ask for anything except what Hegai, the king’s trusted official in charge of the
harem, had
advised. And
Esther found favor in the eyes of
everyone who saw her.
So
Esther was taken unto king
Ahasuerus into his house royal in the tenth month, which is the month
Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
She was taken to King
Xerxes in the royal palace in the tenth month, the month of
Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.
And the king loved
Esther above all the women, and
she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
And the king loved
Esther more than all the other women, and
she found grace and favor in his sight more than all of the other virgins. So he placed the royal crown upon her head and made her queen in place of Vashti.
Esther had not yet
shewed her kindred nor her people; as
Mordecai had charged her: for
Esther did the commandment of
Mordecai, like as when
she was brought up with him.
When
Mordecai learned of the plot, he reported it to Queen
Esther, and
she informed the king on
Mordecai’s behalf.
And he thought
scorn to lay hands on
Mordecai alone; for they had
shewed him the people of
Mordecai: wherefore
Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of
Ahasuerus, even the people of
Mordecai.
And when he learned the identity of
Mordecai’s people, he
scorned the notion of laying hands on
Mordecai alone. Instead, he sought to destroy all of
Mordecai’s people, the Jews, throughout the kingdom of
Xerxes.
When
Esther’s maidens and eunuchs came and told her about
Mordecai, the queen was overcome with distress.
She sent clothes for
Mordecai to wear instead of his
sackcloth, but he would not accept them.
Then called
Esther for Hatach, one of the king’s chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to
Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.
Then
Esther summoned Hathach, one of the king’s eunuchs appointed to her, and
she dispatched him to
Mordecai to learn what was troubling him and why.
Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at
Shushan to destroy them, to
shew it unto
Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that
she should go in unto the king, to make
supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.
Mordecai also gave Hathach a copy of the written decree issued in
Susa for the destruction of the Jews, to show and explain to
Esther,
urging her to approach the king,
implore his favor, and
plead before him for her people.
And it was so, when the king saw
Esther the queen standing in the court, that
she obtained favour in his sight: and the king held out to
Esther the golden
sceptre that was in his hand. So
Esther drew near, and touched the top of the
sceptre.
As soon as the king saw Queen
Esther standing in the court,
she found favor in his sight. The king extended the gold
scepter in his hand toward
Esther, and
she approached and touched the
tip of the
scepter.
Haman said moreover,
Yea,
Esther the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the
banquet that
she had prepared but myself; and to
morrow am I invited unto her also with the king.
“What is more,”
Haman added, “Queen
Esther invited no one but me to join the king at the
banquet she prepared, and I am invited back
tomorrow along with the king.
And
Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and
besought him with tears to put away the mischief of
Haman the Agagite, and his
device that he had devised against the Jews.
And once again,
Esther addressed the king.
She fell at his feet
weeping and
begged him to
revoke the evil scheme of
Haman the Agagite, which he had devised against the Jews.
Then the king held out the golden
sceptre toward
Esther. So
Esther arose, and stood before the king,
The king extended the gold
scepter toward
Esther, and
she arose and stood before the king.
And said, If it please the king, and if I have found favour in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by
Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews which are in all the king’s provinces:
“If it pleases the king,”
she said, “and if I have found favor in his sight, and the matter seems proper to the king, and I am pleasing in his sight, may an order be written to
revoke the letters that the scheming
Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king’s provinces.
His substance also was seven thousand
sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred
she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.
and he owned 7,000
sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female
donkeys, and a very large number of servants. Job was the greatest man of all the people of the East.
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The fire of God fell from heaven. It burned and consumed the
sheep and the servants, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a
shock of corn cometh in in his season.
You will come to the grave in full
vigor, like a
sheaf of grain gathered in season.
To him that is
afflicted pity should be
shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the
Almighty.
A
despairing man should have the kindness of his friend, even if he forsakes the fear of the
Almighty.
The troops of Tema looked, the companies of
Sheba waited for them.
The caravans of Tema look for water; the travelers of
Sheba hope to find it.
As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more.
As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes down to
Sheol does not come back up.
I will say unto God, Do not
condemn me;
shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.
For it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou
shewest thyself marvellous upon me.
Should I hold my head high, You would
hunt me like a lion, and again display Your power against me.
And that he would
shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.
and disclose to you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know then that God exacts from you less than your iniquity deserves.
It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than
hell; what canst thou know?
They are higher than the heavens—what can you do? They are deeper than
Sheol—what can you know?
Oh that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest
appoint me a set time, and remember me!
If only You would hide me in
Sheol and
conceal me until Your anger has passed! If only You would
appoint a time for me and then remember me!
I will
shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;
Listen to me and I will inform you. I will describe what I have seen,
He shall
shake off his unripe
grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.
He will be like a vine
stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree that
sheds its blossoms.
If I wait, the grave is mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness.
If I look for
Sheol as my home, if I spread out my bed in darkness,
They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.
Will it go down to the gates of
Sheol? Will we go down together into the dust?”
His confidence shall be rooted out of his tabernacle, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors.
He is
torn from the
shelter of his tent and is marched off to the king of terrors.
They
spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave.
They
spend their days in prosperity and go down to
Sheol in peace.
They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter.
Drenched by mountain rains, they
huddle against the rocks for want of
shelter.
They cause him to go naked without clothing, and they take away the
sheaf from the
hungry;
Hell is naked before him, and destruction hath no covering.
But now they that are younger than I have me in
derision, whose fathers I would have
disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.
“But now they
mock me, men younger than I am, whose fathers I would have refused to
entrust with my
sheep dogs.
If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the
fleece of my
sheep;
if his heart has not blessed me for warming him with the
fleece of my
sheep,
And
Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and ye are very old; wherefore I was afraid, and
durst not
shew you mine opinion.
So
Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite declared: “I am young in years, while you are old; that is why I was
timid and afraid to tell you what I know.
Therefore I said,
Hearken to me; I also will
shew mine opinion.
Therefore I say, ‘
Listen to me; I too will declare what I know.’
I said, I will answer also my part, I also will
shew mine opinion.
I too will answer;
yes, I will declare what I know.
Yet if there is a
messenger on his side, one
mediator in a thousand, to tell a man what is right for him,
Suffer me a little, and I will
shew thee that I have yet to speak on God’s behalf.
“Bear with me a little longer, and I will show you that there is more to be said on God’s behalf.
Then he sheweth them their work, and their transgressions that they have exceeded.
The noise thereof sheweth concerning it, the cattle also concerning the vapour.
The
thunder declares His presence; even the cattle regard the rising storm.
Which leaveth her eggs in the earth, and warmeth them in dust,
For she leaves her eggs on the ground and lets them warm in the sand.
And forgetteth that the foot may
crush them, or that the wild beast may break them.
She forgets that a foot may
crush them, or a wild animal may
trample them.
She is
hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;
She treats her young harshly, as if not her own, with no
concern that her labor was in vain.
What time she lifteth up herself on high, she scorneth the horse and his rider.
Yet when she proudly spreads her wings, she laughs at the horse and its rider.
She dwelleth and abideth on the rock, upon the
crag of the rock, and the strong place.
From thence
she seeketh the prey, and her eyes behold
afar off.
From there he
spies out food; his eyes see it from
afar.
Her young ones also
suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is
she.
His young ones feast on blood; and where the slain are, there he is.”
So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand
sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand
she asses.
So the LORD blessed Job’s latter days more than his first. He owned 14,000
sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female
donkeys.
There be many that say, Who will
shew us any good? LORD, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us.
Many ask, “Who can show us the good?”
Shine the light of Your face upon us, O LORD.
But let all those that put their trust in thee
rejoice: let them ever
shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee.
But let all who take refuge in You
rejoice; let them ever
shout for joy. May You
shelter them, that those who love Your name may
rejoice in You.
For in death there is no
remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee
thanks?
For there is no mention of You in death; who can praise You from
Sheol?
All
sheep and oxen,
yea, and the beasts of the field;
all sheep and oxen, and even the beasts of the field,
I will praise thee, O LORD, with my whole heart; I will
shew forth all thy marvellous works.
I will give
thanks to the LORD with all my heart; I will recount all Your wonders.
That I may
shew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughter of
Zion: I will
rejoice in thy salvation.
that I may declare all Your praises— that within the gates of Daughter
Zion I may
rejoice in Your salvation.
The wicked shall be turned into
hell, and all the nations that
forget God.
The wicked will return to
Sheol— all the nations who
forget God.
