And Solomon made all the vessels that were for the house of God, the golden altar also, and the tables
whereon the
shewbread was set;
Solomon also made all the furnishings for the house of God: the golden altar; the tables on which was placed the Bread of the Presence;
Also king Solomon, and all the congregation of Israel that were assembled unto him before the ark, sacrificed sheep and oxen, which could not be told nor numbered for multitude.
There, before the ark, King Solomon and the whole congregation of Israel who had assembled with him sacrificed so many sheep and oxen that they could not be counted or numbered.
And said, O LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee in the heaven, nor in the earth; which keepest covenant, and shewest mercy unto thy servants, that walk before thee with all their hearts:
and said: “O LORD, God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven or on earth, keeping Your covenant of loving devotion with Your servants who walk before You with all their hearts.
And king Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty and two thousand oxen, and an hundred and twenty thousand sheep: so the king and all the people dedicated the house of God.
And King Solomon offered a sacrifice of 22,000 oxen and 120,000 sheep. So the king and all the people dedicated the house of God.
And on the three and
twentieth day of the seventh month he sent the people away into their tents,
glad and
merry in heart for the goodness that the LORD had
shewed unto David, and to Solomon, and to Israel his people.
On the twenty-third day of the seventh month, Solomon sent the people away to their homes, joyful and
glad of heart for the good things that the LORD had done for David, for Solomon, and for His people Israel.
And when the queen of
Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon,
she came to prove Solomon with hard questions at Jerusalem, with a very great company, and camels that bare spices, and gold in abundance, and precious stones: and when
she was come to Solomon,
she communed with him of all that was in her heart.
Now when the queen of
Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon,
she came to test him with difficult questions.
She arrived in Jerusalem with a very large
caravan—with camels bearing spices, gold in abundance, and precious stones. So
she came to Solomon and spoke with him about all that was on her mind.
And when the queen of
Sheba had seen the wisdom of Solomon, and the house that he had built,
When the queen of
Sheba saw the wisdom of Solomon, the palace he had built,
And she said to the king, It was a true report which I heard in mine own land of thine acts, and of thy wisdom:
She said to the king, “The report I heard in my own country about your words and wisdom is true.
And
she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices great abundance, and precious stones: neither was there any such
spice as the queen of
Sheba gave king Solomon.
Then
she gave the king 120 talents of gold, a great quantity of spices, and precious stones. There had never been such spices as those the queen of
Sheba gave to King Solomon.
And king Solomon gave to the queen of
Sheba all her desire,
whatsoever she asked, beside that which
she had brought unto the king. So
she turned, and went away to her own land,
she and her servants.
King Solomon gave the queen of
Sheba all
she desired—whatever
she asked—far more than
she had brought the king. Then
she left and returned to her own country, along with her servants.
And king Solomon made two hundred targets of beaten gold: six hundred
shekels of beaten gold went to one
target.
King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; six hundred shekels of hammered gold went into each shield.
And three hundred shields made he of beaten gold: three hundred
shekels of gold went to one shield. And the king put them in the house of the forest of
Lebanon.
He also made three hundred small shields of hammered gold; three hundred
shekels of gold went into each shield. And the king put them in the House of the Forest of
Lebanon.
Then
Rehoboam went to
Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.
But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,
But the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah the man of God:
Which bare him children; Jeush, and Shamariah, and Zaham.
She bore sons to him: Jeush, Shemariah, and Zaham.
And after her he took Maachah the daughter of
Absalom; which bare him
Abijah, and Attai, and Ziza, and
Shelomith.
After her, he married
Maacah daughter of
Absalom, and
she bore to him
Abijah, Attai, Ziza, and
Shelomith.
Then came
Shemaiah the prophet to
Rehoboam, and to the princes of Judah, that were gathered together to Jerusalem because of
Shishak, and said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, Ye have
forsaken me, and therefore have I also left you in the hand of
Shishak.
Then
Shemaiah the prophet came to
Rehoboam and the leaders of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem because of
Shishak, and he said to them, “This is what the LORD says: ‘You have
forsaken Me; therefore, I have
forsaken you into the hand of
Shishak.’”
And when the LORD saw that they humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to
Shemaiah, saying, They have humbled themselves; therefore I will not destroy them, but I will grant them some
deliverance; and my wrath shall not be poured out upon Jerusalem by the hand of
Shishak.
When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to
Shemaiah, saying, “They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them, but will soon grant them
deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through
Shishak.
Now the acts of
Rehoboam, from first to last, are they not written in the records of
Shemaiah the Prophet and of
Iddo the
Seer concerning the
genealogies? There was war between
Rehoboam and
Jeroboam throughout their days.
He reigned three years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Michaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. And there was war between
Abijah and
Jeroboam.
and he reigned in Jerusalem three years. His mother’s name was Micaiah daughter of Uriel;
she was from Gibeah. And there was war between
Abijah and
Jeroboam.
And they burn unto the LORD every morning and every evening burnt sacrifices and sweet incense: the
shewbread also set they in order upon the pure table; and the
candlestick of gold with the lamps thereof, to burn every evening: for we keep the charge of the LORD our God; but ye have
forsaken him.
Every morning and every evening they present burnt offerings and
fragrant incense to the LORD. They set out the rows of
showbread on the
ceremonially clean table, and every evening they light the lamps of the gold lampstand. We are carrying out the requirements of the LORD our God, while you have
forsaken Him.
They
smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away
sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
They also attacked the tents of the herdsmen and carried off many sheep and camels. Then they returned to Jerusalem.
And they offered unto the LORD the same time, of the
spoil which they had brought, seven hundred oxen and seven thousand
sheep.
At that time they sacrificed to the LORD seven hundred oxen and seven thousand
sheep from all the
plunder they had brought back.
And also concerning Maachah the mother of
Asa the king, he removed her from being queen, because
she had made an
idol in a
grove: and
Asa cut down her
idol, and stamped it, and burnt it at the
brook Kidron.
For the eyes of the LORD run to and
fro throughout the whole earth, to
shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him.
Herein thou hast done
foolishly: therefore from henceforth thou shalt have wars.
For the eyes of the LORD
roam to and
fro over all the earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose hearts are fully devoted to Him. You have acted
foolishly in this matter. From now on, therefore, you will be at war.”
And with them he sent Levites, even
Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and
Asahel, and
Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and
Tob-adonijah, Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, priests.
accompanied by certain Levites—
Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah,
Asahel,
Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and
Tob-adonijah—along with the priests Elishama and Jehoram.
And after certain years he went down to
Ahab to Samaria. And
Ahab killed
sheep and oxen for him in abundance, and for the people that he had with him, and persuaded him to go up with him to
Ramoth-
gilead.
And some years later he went down to visit
Ahab in Samaria, where
Ahab sacrificed many
sheep and cattle for him and the people with him, and urged him to march up to
Ramoth-
gilead.
Then he said, I did see all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as
sheep that have no
shepherd: and the LORD said, These have no master; let them return therefore every man to his house in peace.
So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like
sheep without a
shepherd. And the LORD said, ‘These people have no master; let each one return home in peace.’”
And
Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem: and he went out again through the people from Beer-
sheba to mount Ephraim, and brought them back unto the LORD God of their fathers.
Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, and once again he went out among the people from
Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim and turned them back to the LORD, the God of their fathers.
But when
Athaliah the mother of
Ahaziah saw that her son was dead,
she arose and destroyed all the seed royal of the house of Judah.
When
Athaliah the mother of
Ahaziah saw that her son was dead,
she proceeded to
annihilate all the royal heirs of the house of Judah.
But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took
Joash the son of
Ahaziah, and
stole him from among the king’s sons that were slain, and put him and his
nurse in a
bedchamber. So Jehoshabeath, the daughter of king Jehoram, the wife of Jehoiada the priest, (for
she was the sister of
Ahaziah,)
hid him from
Athaliah, so that
she slew him not.
But Jehoshabeath daughter of King Jehoram took
Joash son of
Ahaziah and
stole him away from among the sons of the king who were being murdered, and
she put him and his
nurse in a
bedroom. Because Jehoshabeath, the daughter of King Jehoram and the wife of Jehoiada the priest, was
Ahaziah’s sister,
she hid Joash from
Athaliah so that
she could not kill him.
Now when
Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king,
she came to the people into the house of the LORD:
When
Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and
cheering the king,
she went out to them in the house of the LORD.
And
she looked, and, behold, the king stood at his
pillar at the entering in, and the princes and the
trumpets by the king: and all the people of the land
rejoiced, and sounded with
trumpets, also the singers with instruments of musick, and such as taught to sing praise. Then
Athaliah rent her clothes, and said, Treason, Treason.
And
she looked out and saw the king standing by his
pillar at the entrance. The officers and trumpeters were beside the king, and all the people of the land were
rejoicing and blowing
trumpets, while the singers with musical instruments were leading the praises. Then
Athaliah tore her clothes and
screamed, “Treason, treason!”
Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and
whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said,
Slay her not in the house of the LORD.
And Jehoiada the priest sent out the commanders of hundreds in charge of the army, saying, “Bring her out between the ranks, and put to the sword
anyone who follows her.” For the priest had said, “
She must not be put to death in the house of the LORD.”
So they laid hands on her; and when
she was come to the entering of the horse gate by the king’s house, they
slew her there.
So they seized
Athaliah as
she reached the entrance of the Horse Gate to the palace grounds, and there they put her to death.
Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of Beer-
sheba.
Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother’s name was Zibiah;
she was from
Beersheba.
And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants
conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and
slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the
sepulchres of the kings.
And when the Arameans had withdrawn, they left
Joash severely wounded. His own servants
conspired against him for
shedding the blood of the son of Jehoiada the priest, and they killed him on his bed. So he died and was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
Amaziah was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.
Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan;
she was from Jerusalem.
So
Joash the king of Israel went up; and they saw one another in the face, both he and
Amaziah king of Judah, at Beth-
shemesh, which belongeth to Judah.
So Jehoash king of Israel advanced, and he and
Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth-
shemesh in Judah.
And
Joash the king of Israel took
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz, at Beth-
shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and
brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
There at Beth-
shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz. Then Jehoash brought him to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate—a section of four hundred cubits.
Sixteen years old was Uzziah when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty and two years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Jecoliah of Jerusalem.
Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years. His mother’s name was Jecoliah; she was from Jerusalem.
The Philistines also had invaded the cities of the low country, and of the south of Judah, and had taken Beth-shemesh, and Ajalon, and Gederoth, and Shocho with the villages thereof, and Timnah with the villages thereof, Gimzo also and the villages thereof: and they dwelt there.
The Philistines had also
raided the cities of the foothills and the Negev of Judah, capturing and occupying Beth-
shemesh,
Aijalon, and Gederoth, as well as Soco, Timnah, and Gimzo with their villages.
And of the sons of Heman; Jehiel, and Shimei: and of the sons of
Jeduthun;
Shemaiah, and Uzziel.
Jehiel and Shimei from the Hemanites; and Shemaiah and Uzziel from the Jeduthunites.
Then they went in to
Hezekiah the king, and said, We have
cleansed all the house of the LORD, and the altar of burnt offering, with all the vessels thereof, and the
shewbread table, with all the vessels thereof.
Then they went in to King
Hezekiah and reported, “We have
cleansed the entire house of the LORD, the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the table of the
showbread with all its utensils.
And the consecrated things were six hundred oxen and three thousand sheep.
And the consecrated offerings were six hundred bulls and three thousand sheep.
So they established a decree to make
proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beer-
sheba even to
Dan, that they should come to keep the
passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done it of a long time in such sort as it was written.
So they established a decree to
circulate a
proclamation throughout Israel, from
Beersheba to
Dan, that the people should come to keep the
Passover of the LORD, the God of Israel, in Jerusalem. For they had not observed it as a nation as prescribed.
For
Hezekiah king of Judah did give to the congregation a thousand bullocks and seven thousand
sheep; and the princes gave to the congregation a thousand bullocks and ten thousand
sheep: and a great number of priests
sanctified themselves.
For
Hezekiah king of Judah contributed a thousand bulls and seven thousand
sheep for the assembly, and the officials contributed a thousand bulls and ten thousand
sheep for the assembly, and a great number of priests consecrated themselves.
And concerning the children of Israel and Judah, that dwelt in the cities of Judah, they also brought in the
tithe of oxen and
sheep, and the
tithe of holy things which were consecrated unto the LORD their God, and laid them by heaps.
And the Israelites and Judahites who lived in the cities of Judah also brought a
tithe of their herds and flocks and a
tithe of the holy things consecrated to the LORD their God, and they laid them in large heaps.
And next him were
Eden, and Miniamin, and Jeshua, and
Shemaiah, Amariah, and
Shecaniah, in the cities of the priests, in their set office, to give to their brethren by courses, as well to the great as to the small:
Under his authority,
Eden, Miniamin, Jeshua,
Shemaiah, Amariah, and
Shecaniah faithfully distributed portions to their fellow priests in their cities, according to their divisions, old and young alike.
Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him substance very much.
He made cities for himself, and he acquired herds of sheep and cattle in abundance, for God gave him very great wealth.
And Hilkiah, and they that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the
prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the
wardrobe; (now
she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to that effect.
So Hilkiah and those the king had designated went and spoke to Huldah the
prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, the keeper of the
wardrobe.
She lived in Jerusalem, in the Second District.
And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me,
And Huldah said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Tell the man who sent you
Conaniah also, and
Shemaiah and Nethaneel, his brethren, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, chief of the Levites, gave unto the Levites for
passover offerings five thousand small cattle, and five hundred oxen.
Additionally, Conaniah and his brothers
Shemaiah and Nethanel, as well as Hashabiah, Jeiel, and Jozabad, officers of the Levites,
donated to the Levites 5,000
Passover offerings and 500 bulls.
To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as
she lay
desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil
threescore and ten years.
So the land enjoyed its Sabbath rest all the days of the
desolation, until seventy years were completed, in
fulfillment of the word of the LORD through Jeremiah.
Even those did Cyrus king of Persia bring forth by the hand of Mithredath the
treasurer, and numbered them unto
Sheshbazzar, the prince of Judah.
Cyrus king of Persia had them brought out by the hand of Mithredath the
treasurer, who counted them out to
Sheshbazzar the prince of Judah.
All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand and four hundred. All these did Sheshbazzar bring up with them of the captivity that were brought up from Babylon unto Jerusalem.
In all, there were 5,400 gold and silver articles. Sheshbazzar brought all these along when the exiles went up from Babylon to Jerusalem.
The children of Shephatiah, three hundred seventy and two.
the descendants of Shephatiah, 372;
The children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil, the children of Pochereth of Zebaim, the children of Ami.
the descendants of Shephatiah, the descendants of Hattil, the descendants of Pochereth-hazzebaim, and the descendants of Ami.
And these were they which went up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsa,
Cherub, Addan, and Immer: but they could not
shew their father’s house, and their seed, whether they were of Israel:
The following came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha,
Cherub, Addan, and Immer, but could not prove that their families were descended from Israel:
Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and
Zerubbabel the son of
Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings
thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.
Then Jeshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests, along with
Zerubbabel son of
Shealtiel and his associates, began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.
Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began
Zerubbabel the son of
Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the
remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD.
In the second month of the second year after they had arrived at the house of God in Jerusalem,
Zerubbabel son of
Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jozadak, and the rest of their associates including the priests, the Levites, and all who had returned to Jerusalem from the captivity, began the work. They appointed Levites twenty years of age or older to
supervise the construction of the house of the LORD.
Then rose up
Zerubbabel the son of
Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them.
Then
Zerubbabel son of
Shealtiel and Jeshua son of Jozadak rose up and began to rebuild the house of God in Jerusalem. And the prophets of God were with them, helping them.
At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and their companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall?
At that time Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates, Shethar-bozenai, and their associates went to the Jews and asked, “Who authorized you to rebuild this temple and restore this structure?”
The copy of the letter that Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and
Shethar-boznai, and his companions the
Apharsachites, which were on this side the river, sent unto
Darius the king:
This is the text of the letter that Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates,
Shethar-bozenai, and their associates, the officials in the region, sent to King
Darius.
And the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one, whose name was
Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor;
He also removed from the temple of Babylon the gold and silver articles belonging to the house of God, which
Nebuchadnezzar had taken and carried there from the temple in Jerusalem. King Cyrus gave these articles to a man named
Sheshbazzar, whom he appointed governor
Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.
So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of the house of God in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been under construction, but it has not yet been completed.”
Now therefore, Tatnai, governor beyond the river,
Shethar-boznai, and your companions the
Apharsachites, which are beyond the river, be ye far from thence:
Therefore
Darius decreed: To Tattenai governor of the region west of the Euphrates,
Shethar-bozenai, and your associates and officials in the region: You must stay away from that place!
Then Tatnai, governor on this side the river,
Shethar-boznai, and their companions, according to that which
Darius the king had sent, so they did speedily.
In
response, Tattenai the governor of the region west of the Euphrates,
Shethar-bozenai, and their associates
diligently carried out what King
Darius had decreed.
Of the sons of
Shechaniah, of the sons of Pharosh;
Zechariah: and with him were reckoned by
genealogy of the males an hundred and fifty.
from the descendants of David, Hattush of the descendants of
Shecaniah; from the descendants of Parosh,
Zechariah, and with him were registered 150 men;
Of the sons of Shechaniah; the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males.
from the descendants of Zattu, Shecaniah son of Jahaziel, and with him 300 men;
And of the sons of
Shephatiah; Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him
fourscore males.
from the descendants of Shephatiah, Zebadiah son of Michael, and with him 80 men;
And of the sons of
Shelomith; the son of Josiphiah, and with him an hundred and
threescore males.
from the descendants of Bani, Shelomith son of Josiphiah, and with him 160 men;
And of the last sons of Adonikam, whose names are these, Eliphelet, Jeiel, and
Shemaiah, and with them
threescore males.
from the later descendants of Adonikam, these were their names: Eliphelet, Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and with them 60 men;
Then sent I for
Eliezer, for
Ariel, for
Shemaiah, and for Elnathan, and for Jarib, and for Elnathan, and for
Nathan, and for
Zechariah, and for Meshullam, chief men; also for Joiarib, and for Elnathan, men of understanding.
Then I summoned the leaders:
Eliezer,
Ariel,
Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan,
Nathan,
Zechariah, and Meshullam, as well as the teachers Joiarib and Elnathan.
And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen;
And since the
gracious hand of our God was upon us, they brought us
Sherebiah—a man of insight from the descendants of Mahli son of Levi, the son of Israel—along with his sons and brothers, 18 men;
Then I separated twelve of the chief of the priests, Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brethren with them,
Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, together with Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brothers,
And now for a little space grace hath been
shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a
remnant to escape, and to give us a
nail in his holy place, that our God may
lighten our eyes, and give us a little
reviving in our
bondage.
But now, for a brief moment, grace has come from the LORD our God to preserve for us a
remnant and to give us a
stake in His holy place. Even in our
bondage, our God has given us new life and light to our eyes.
And
Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of
Elam, answered and said unto
Ezra, We have
trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.
Then
Shecaniah son of Jehiel, an
Elamite, said to
Ezra: “We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the people of the land, yet in spite of this, there is hope for Israel.
And of the sons of Harim; Maaseiah, and
Elijah, and
Shemaiah, and Jehiel, and Uzziah.
From the descendants of Harim: Maaseiah,
Elijah,
Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah.
And of the sons of Bani; Meshullam, Malluch, and Adaiah, Jashub, and
Sheal, and
Ramoth.
From the descendants of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub,
Sheal, and Jeremoth.
And of the sons of Harim;
Eliezer, Ishijah, Malchiah,
Shemaiah, Shimeon,
From the descendants of Harim:
Benjamin, Malluch, and Shemariah.
Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah,
Shemaiah, Shimeon, Benjamin, Malluch, and
Shemariah.
And
Shelemiah, and
Nathan, and Adaiah,
Shimei,
Shelemiah,
Nathan, Adaiah,
Azareel, and Shelemiah, Shemariah,
Azarel, Shelemiah, Shemariah,
Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests, and they builded the
sheep gate; they
sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they
sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel.
At the
Sheep Gate, Eliashib the high priest and his fellow priests began rebuilding. They dedicated it and
installed its doors. After building as far as the Tower of the Hundred and the Tower of Hananel, they dedicated the wall.
But the gate of the fountain repaired Shallun the son of
Col-hozeh, the ruler of part of
Mizpah; he built it, and covered it, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof, and the wall of the
pool of
Siloah by the king’s garden, and unto the stairs that go down from the city of David.
The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son of
Col-hozeh, ruler of the district of
Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofed it, and
installed its doors, bolts, and bars. He also repaired the wall of the
Pool of
Shelah near the king’s garden, as far as the stairs that descend from the City of David.
After them repaired
Zadok the son of Immer over against his house. After him repaired also
Shemaiah the son of
Shechaniah, the keeper of the east gate.
Next to them,
Zadok son of Immer made repairs opposite his house, and next to him,
Shemaiah son of
Shecaniah, the guard of the East Gate, made repairs.
After him repaired Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, another piece. After him repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah over against his chamber.
Next to him, Hananiah son of Shelemiah, as well as Hanun the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. Next to them, Meshullam son of Berechiah made repairs opposite his own quarters.
And between the going up of the corner unto the sheep gate repaired the goldsmiths and the merchants.
And between the upper room above the corner and the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and merchants made repairs.
But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty
shekels of silver;
yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.
The governors before me had
heavily burdened the people, taking from them bread and wine
plus forty
shekels of silver. Their servants also
oppressed the people, but I did not do this because of my fear of God.
Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice
sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the
bondage was heavy upon this people.
Each day one ox, six choice
sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me, and once every ten days an abundance of all kinds of wine was provided. But I did not demand the food
allotted to the governor, because the burden on the people was so heavy.
Afterward I came unto the house of
Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to
slay thee;
yea, in the night will they come to
slay thee.
Later, I went to the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was confined to his house. He said: “Let us meet at the house of God inside the temple. Let us shut the temple doors because they are coming to kill you— by night they are coming to kill you!”
For there were many in Judah
sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of
Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.
For many in Judah were bound by oath to him, since he was a son-in-law of Shecaniah son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah.
The children of Shephatiah, three hundred seventy and two.
the descendants of Shephatiah, 372;
The children of Shephatiah, the children of Hattil, the children of Pochereth of Zebaim, the children of Amon.
the descendants of Shephatiah, the descendants of Hattil, the descendants of Pochereth-hazzebaim, and the descendants of Amon.
And these were they which went up also from Telmelah, Telharesha,
Cherub, Addon, and Immer: but they could not
shew their father’s house, nor their seed, whether they were of Israel.
The following came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha,
Cherub, Addon, and Immer, but could not prove that their families were descended from Israel:
And
Ezra the
scribe stood upon a
pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and
Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana,
Zechariah, and Meshullam.
Ezra the
scribe stood on a high wooden platform built for this occasion. At his right side stood Mattithiah,
Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, and at his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum,
Hash-baddanah,
Zechariah, and Meshullam.
Also Jeshua, and Bani, and
Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita,
Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.
The Levites—Jeshua, Bani,
Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita,
Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, and Pelaiah—
instructed the people in the Law as they stood in their places.
Then stood up upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel,
Shebaniah, Bunni,
Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and
cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.
And the Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel,
Shebaniah, Bunni,
Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani—stood on the raised platform and
cried out in a loud voice to the LORD their God.
