Berean Standard Bible BSB Bible
And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt
besiege it:
But if they refuse to make peace with you and
wage war against you, lay
siege to that city.
When thou shalt
besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an
axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the
siege:
When you lay
siege to a city for an extended time while fighting against it to capture it, you must not destroy its trees by putting an
axe to them, because you can eat their fruit. You must not cut them down. Are the trees of the field human, that you should
besiege them?
Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.
But you may destroy the trees that you know do not produce fruit. Use them to build
siege works against the city that is
waging war against you, until it falls.
And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters, which the LORD thy God hath given thee, in the
siege, and in the straitness,
wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee:
Then you will eat the fruit of your
womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters whom the LORD your God has given you, in the
siege and distress that your enemy will
inflict on you.
So that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat: because he hath nothing left him in the
siege, and in the straitness,
wherewith thine enemies shall distress thee in all thy gates.
refusing to share with any of them the flesh of his children he will eat because he has nothing left in the
siege and distress that your enemy will
inflict on you within all your gates.
And toward her young one that cometh out from between her feet, and toward her children which she shall bear: for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly in the
siege and straitness,
wherewith thine enemy shall distress thee in thy gates.
the
afterbirth that comes from between her legs and the children she bears, because she will secretly eat them for lack of anything else in the
siege and distress that your enemy will
inflict on you within your gates.
And Joshua passed from
Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto
Lachish, and
encamped against it, and fought against it:
And Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from
Libnah to
Lachish. They laid
siege to it and fought against it.
And from
Lachish Joshua passed unto
Eglon, and all Israel with him; and they
encamped against it, and fought against it:
So Joshua moved on from
Lachish to
Eglon, and all Israel with him. They laid
siege to it and fought against it.
Soon Nahash the
Ammonite came up and laid
siege to
Jabesh-

Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and
encamp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.
Now, therefore,
assemble the rest of the troops, lay
siege to the city, and capture it. Otherwise I will capture the city, and it will be named after me.”
And they came and besieged him in
Abel of Beth-maachah, and they cast up a bank against the city, and it stood in the
trench: and all the people that were with
Joab battered the wall, to throw it down.
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an
arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a bank against it.
So this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an
arrow into it. He will not come before it with a shield or build up a
siege ramp against it.
At that time the servants of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem, and the city was besieged.
At that time the servants of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched up to Jerusalem, and the city came under
siege.
And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he, and all his host, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it; and they built forts against it round about.
So in the ninth year of
Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire army. They
encamped outside the city and built a
siege wall all around it.
After these things, and the establishment thereof,
Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and
encamped against the
fenced cities, and thought to
win them for himself.
After all these acts of faithfulness,
Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid
siege to the fortified cities, intending to
conquer them for himself.
After this did
Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid
siege against
Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto
Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,
Later, as
Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces besieged
Lachish, he sent his servants to Jerusalem with a message for King
Hezekiah of Judah and all the people of Judah who were in Jerusalem:
“This is what
Sennacherib king of Assyria says: What is the basis of your confidence, that you remain in Jerusalem under
siege?
Upon my right hand rise the youth; they
push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.
The
rabble arises at my right; they lay snares for my feet and build
siege ramps against me.
Blessed be the LORD: for he hath shewed me his marvellous kindness in a strong city.
Blessed be the LORD, for He has shown me His loving devotion in a city under siege.
There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:
There was a small city with few men. A mighty king came against it, surrounded it, and built large siege ramps against it.
A
dire vision is declared to me: “The
traitor still betrays, and the destroyer still destroys. Go up, O
Elam! Lay
siege, O Media! I will put an end to all her
groaning.”
Behold the land of the Chaldeans; this people was not,
til the Assyrian founded it for them that dwell in the wilderness: they set up the towers thereof, they raised up the palaces thereof; and he brought it to ruin.
Look at the land of the Chaldeans— a people now of no account. The Assyrians destined it for the desert creatures; they set up their
siege towers and
stripped its palaces. They brought it to ruin.
And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee.
I will camp in a circle around you; I will
besiege you with towers and set up
siege works against you.
And the multitude of all the nations that fight against
Ariel, even all that fight against her and her
munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision.
All the many nations going out to battle against
Ariel— even all who war against her, laying
siege and attacking her— will be like a dream, like a vision in the night,
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an
arrow there nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.
So this is what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an
arrow into it. He will not come before it with a shield or build up a
siege ramp against it.
For thus hath the LORD of hosts said,
Hew ye down trees, and cast a mount against Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her.
For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Cut down the trees and raise a
siege ramp against Jerusalem. This city must be punished; there is nothing but oppression in her midst.
Gather up thy wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.
Gather up your belongings from this land, you who live under siege.
And I will cause them to eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they shall eat every one the flesh of his friend in the
siege and straitness,
wherewith their enemies, and they that seek their lives, shall
straiten them.
I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and they will eat one another’s flesh in the siege and distress inflicted on them by their enemies who seek their lives.’
Behold the mounts, they are come unto the city to take it; and the city is given into the hand of the Chaldeans, that fight against it, because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the
pestilence: and what thou hast spoken is come to pass; and, behold, thou seest it.
See how the siege ramps are mounted against the city to capture it. And by sword and famine and plague, the city has been given into the hands of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it. What You have spoken has happened, as You now see!
For thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, and by the sword;
For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says about the houses of this city and the palaces of the kings of Judah that have been
torn down for
defense against the
siege ramps and the sword:
In the ninth year of
Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, came Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and all his army against Jerusalem, and they besieged it.
In the ninth year of
Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire army and laid
siege to the city.
And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and pitched against it, and built forts against it round about.
So in the ninth year of
Zedekiah’s reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem with his entire army. They
encamped outside the city and built a
siege wall all around it.
And lay
siege against it, and build a fort against it, and cast a mount against it; set the camp also against it, and set
battering rams against it round about.
Then lay
siege against it: Construct a
siege wall, build a
ramp to it, set up camps against it, and place
battering rams around it on all sides.
Moreover take thou unto thee an iron pan, and set it for a wall of iron between thee and the city: and set thy face against it, and it shall be besieged, and thou shalt lay siege against it. This shall be a sign to the house of Israel.
Then take an iron plate and set it up as an iron wall between
yourself and the city. Turn your face toward it so that it is under
siege, and
besiege it. This will be a sign to the house of Israel.
Therefore thou shalt set thy face toward the
siege of Jerusalem, and thine arm shall be uncovered, and thou shalt
prophesy against it.
You must turn your face toward the
siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared, and
prophesy against it.
And, behold, I will lay bands upon thee, and thou shalt not turn thee from one side to another, till thou hast ended the days of thy siege.
Now behold, I will
tie you up with ropes so you cannot turn from side to side until you have finished the days of your
siege.
Thou shalt burn with fire a third part in the midst of the city, when the days of the
siege are fulfilled: and thou shalt take a third part, and
smite about it with a knife: and a third part thou shalt
scatter in the wind; and I will draw out a sword after them.
When the days of the
siege have ended, you are to burn up a third of the hair inside the city; you are also to take a third and
slash it with the sword all around the city; and you are to
scatter a third to the wind. For I will
unleash a sword behind them.
Neither shall Pharaoh with his mighty army and great company make for him in the war, by casting up mounts, and building forts, to cut off many persons:
Pharaoh with his mighty army and vast
horde will not help him in battle, when ramps are built and
siege walls constructed to destroy many lives.
At his right hand was the
divination for Jerusalem, to
appoint captains, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with
shouting, to
appoint battering rams against the gates, to cast a mount, and to build a fort.
In his right hand appears the
portent for Jerusalem, where he is to set up
battering rams, to call for the slaughter, to lift a battle cry, to direct the
battering rams against the gates, to build a
ramp, and to erect a
siege wall.
Son of man, write thee the name of the day, even of this same day: the king of Babylon set himself against Jerusalem this same day.
“Son of man, write down
today’s date, for on this very day the king of Babylon has laid
siege to Jerusalem.
He shall
slay with the sword thy daughters in the field: and he shall make a fort against thee, and cast a mount against thee, and lift up the
buckler against thee.
He will slaughter the villages of your mainland with the sword; he will set up
siege works against you, build a
ramp to your walls, and raise his shields against you.
So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mount, and take the most
fenced cities: and the arms of the south shall not
withstand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to
withstand.
Then the king of the North will come, build up a
siege ramp, and capture a fortified city. The forces of the South will not stand; even their best troops will not be able to resist.
Now gather
thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid
siege against us: they shall
smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the
cheek.
Now, O daughter of troops,
mobilize your troops; for a
siege is laid against us! With a rod they will strike the
cheek of the judge of Israel.
Draw your water for the
siege;
strengthen your fortresses. Work the clay and
tread the mortar; repair the brick
kiln!
And they shall
scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a
scorn unto them: they shall
deride every strong hold; for they shall
heap dust, and take it.
They
scoff at kings and make rulers an object of
scorn. They
laugh at every fortress and build up
siege ramps to seize it.
Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of
trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the
siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
“Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of
drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples. Judah will be besieged, as well as Jerusalem.
But with them that were in Bethsura he made peace: for they came out of the city, because they had no
victuals there to
endure the
siege, it being a year of rest to the land.
Wherefore he went in all
haste, and said to the king and the captains of the host and the company, We decay daily, and our
victuals are but small, and the place we lay
siege unto is strong, and the affairs of the kingdom lie upon us:
Then went he and laid siege against Bethbasi; and they fought against it a long season and made engines of war.

Gaza, but they of

siege unto it, and burned the suburbs thereof with fire, and
spoiled them.
And because certain, who were no less than nine thousand, were fled together into two very strong castles, having all manner of things convenient to
sustain the
siege,
But they that were with Maccabeus laid
siege against the fortress
courageously four days.
So he came to
Judea, and drew near to Bethsura, which was a strong town, but distant from Jerusalem about five furlongs, and he laid
sore siege unto it.
