Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the
souls that they had
gotten in
Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of
Canaan; and into the land of
Canaan they came.
And
Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the possessions and people they had acquired in
Haran, and set out for the land of
Canaan. When they came to the land of
Canaan,

Bethel and Hai;
From the Negev he journeyed from place to place toward
Bethel, until he came to the place between
Bethel and
Ai where his tent had formerly been pitched,
And the LORD said unto
Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and
southward, and eastward, and westward:

south and east and west,

Behold now, this city is near to
flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my
soul shall live.
Look, there is a town nearby where I can
flee, and it is a small place. Please let me
flee there—is it not a small place? Then my life will be saved.”
And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the
south country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and
sojourned in
Gerar.

And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my
soul may
bless thee before I die.

tasty dish that I love and bring it to me to eat, so that I may
bless you before I die.”

Esau thy
firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my
venison, that thy
soul may
bless me.

Esau, your
firstborn. I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may
bless me.”
And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s
venison, that my
soul may
bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he
drank.
“Serve me,” said Isaac, “and let me eat some of my son’s game, so that I may
bless you.” Jacob brought it to him, and he
ate; then he brought him wine, and he
drank.
And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s
venison, that thy
soul may
bless me.
He too made some
tasty food, brought it to his father, and said to him, “My father, sit up and eat of your son’s game, so that you may

And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

And they said one to another, We are
verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the
anguish of his
soul, when he
besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.
Then they said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw his
anguish when he
pleaded with us, but we would not
listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.”
And Joseph made
haste; for his
bowels did
yearn upon his brother: and he
sought where to
weep; and he entered into his chamber, and
wept there.
Joseph
hurried out because he was moved to tears for his brother, and he went to a private room to
weep.
These be the sons of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob in Padan-
aram, with his daughter Dinah: all the
souls of his sons and his daughters were thirty and three.
These are the sons of Leah born to Jacob in Paddan-
aram, in addition to his daughter Dinah. The total number of sons and daughters was thirty-three.

Rachel, which were born to Jacob: all the
souls were fourteen.

souls were seven.

Bilhah, whom

Rachel—seven in all.
All the
souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob’s sons’ wives, all the
souls were
threescore and six;
All those belonging to Jacob who came to Egypt—his direct descendants, besides the wives of Jacob’s sons—numbered sixty-six persons.
And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two
souls: all the
souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were

O my
soul, come not thou into their secret; unto their assembly, mine honour, be not thou united: for in their anger they
slew a man, and in their selfwill they
digged down a wall.
May I never enter their council; may I never join their assembly. For they kill men in their anger, and
hamstring oxen on a
whim.
And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.
The descendants of Jacob numbered seventy in all, including Joseph, who was already in Egypt.
Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he
sought to
slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of
Midian: and he sat down by a well.
When Pharaoh heard about this matter, he
sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and settled in the land of
Midian, where he sat down beside a well.
And the LORD said unto Moses in
Midian, Go, return into Egypt: for all the men are dead which
sought thy life.
Now the LORD had said to Moses in
Midian, “Go back to Egypt, for all the men who
sought to kill you are dead.”
And it came to pass by the way in the inn, that the LORD met him, and sought to kill him.
Now at a

And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.
If the household is too small for a whole lamb, they are to share with the nearest
neighbor based on the number of people, and
apportion the lamb accordingly.
Seven days shall ye eat
unleavened bread; even the first day ye shall put away
leaven out of your houses: for
whosoever eateth
leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that
soul shall be cut off from Israel.
For seven days you must eat
unleavened bread. On the first day you are to remove the
leaven from your houses.
Whoever eats anything
leavened from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel.
Seven days shall there be no
leaven found in your houses: for
whosoever eateth that which is
leavened, even that
soul shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he be a stranger, or born in the land.
For seven days there must be no
leaven found in your houses. If
anyone eats something
leavened, that person, whether a foreigner or native of the land, must be cut off from the congregation of Israel.
There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the
trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount.
No hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot with arrows—whether man or beast, he must not live.’ Only when the ram’s horn sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain.”
And when the voice of the
trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.
And as the
sound of the ram’s horn grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him in the
thunder.
And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the
trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood
afar off.
And thou shalt make the boards for the tabernacle, twenty boards on the south side southward.
Construct twenty frames for the south side of the tabernacle,
And thou shalt set the table without the
vail, and the
candlestick over against the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the
south: and thou shalt put the table on the north side.
And place the table outside the
veil on the north side of the tabernacle, and put the lampstand opposite the table, on the
south side.
And thou shalt make the court of the tabernacle: for the
south side
southward there shall be hangings for the court of fine
twined linen of an hundred cubits long for one side:
You are also to make a
courtyard for the tabernacle. On the
south side of the
courtyard make curtains of finely
spun linen, a hundred cubits long on one side,
And it shall be upon Aaron to minister: and his sound shall be heard when he goeth in unto the holy place before the LORD, and when he cometh out, that he die not.
Aaron must wear the
robe whenever he ministers, and its
sound will be heard when he enters or exits the sanctuary before the LORD, so that he will not die.
When thou takest the sum of the children of Israel after their number, then shall they give every man a
ransom for his
soul unto the LORD, when thou numberest them; that there be no plague among them, when thou numberest them.
“When you take a census of the Israelites to number them, each man must pay the LORD a
ransom for his life when he is counted. Then no plague will come upon them when they are numbered.
The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a
shekel, when they give an offering unto the LORD, to make an
atonement for your
souls.
In making the offering to the LORD to
atone for your lives, the rich shall not give more than a half
shekel, nor shall the poor give less.
And thou shalt take the
atonement money of the children of Israel, and shalt
appoint it for the service of the tabernacle of the congregation; that it may be a
memorial unto the children of Israel before the LORD, to make an
atonement for your
souls.
Take the
atonement money from the Israelites and use it for the service of the Tent of Meeting. It will serve as a
memorial for the Israelites before the LORD to make
atonement for your lives.”
Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for
whosoever doeth any work therein, that
soul shall be cut off from among his people.
Keep the Sabbath, for it is holy to you.
Anyone who profanes it must surely be put to death.
Whoever does any work on that day must be cut off from among his people.
And Moses
besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why
doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?
But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God, saying, “O LORD, why does Your anger burn against Your people, whom You brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand?
And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they
shouted, he said unto Moses, There is a noise of war in the camp.
When Joshua heard the
sound of the people
shouting, he said to Moses, “The
sound of war is in the camp.”
And he said, It is not the voice of them that
shout for
mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.
But Moses replied: “It is neither the cry of victory nor the cry of defeat; I hear the sound of singing!”
And Moses took the tabernacle, and pitched it without the camp,
afar off from the camp, and called it the Tabernacle of the congregation. And it came to pass, that every one which
sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation, which was without the camp.
Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it at a distance outside the camp. He called it the Tent of Meeting, and
anyone inquiring of the LORD would go to the Tent of Meeting outside the camp.
And he made boards for the tabernacle; twenty boards for the south side southward:
He constructed twenty frames for the south side of the tabernacle,
And he made the court: on the
south side
southward the hangings of the court were of fine
twined linen, an hundred cubits:
Then he constructed the
courtyard. The
south side of the
courtyard was a hundred cubits long and had curtains of finely
spun linen,
And he put the
candlestick in the tent of the congregation, over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle
southward.
He also placed the lampstand in the Tent of Meeting opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle
Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a soul shall sin through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and shall do against any of them:
“Tell the Israelites to do as follows with one who sins
unintentionally against any of the LORD’s commandments and does what is forbidden by them:
And if a
soul sin, and hear the voice of
swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.
“If someone sins by failing to
testify when he hears a public charge about something he has witnessed, whether he has seen it or learned of it, he shall bear the iniquity.
Or if a
soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a
carcase of an unclean beast, or a
carcase of unclean cattle, or the
carcase of unclean
creeping things, and if it be hidden from him; he also shall be unclean, and guilty.
Or if a person touches anything unclean—whether the
carcass of any unclean wild animal or
livestock or
crawling creature—even if he is unaware of it, he is unclean and guilty.
Or if a
soul swear,
pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good,
whatsoever it be that a man shall
pronounce with an oath, and it be
hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these.
Or if someone swears
thoughtlessly with his lips to do anything good or evil—in whatever matter a man may
rashly pronounce an oath—even if he is unaware of it, when he realizes it, he is guilty in the matter.
If a
soul commit a
trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the LORD; then he shall bring for his
trespass unto the LORD a ram without
blemish out of the flocks, with thy
estimation by shekels of silver, after the
shekel of the sanctuary, for a
trespass offering:
“If someone acts unfaithfully and sins
unintentionally against any of the LORD’s holy things, he must bring his guilt offering to the LORD: an
unblemished ram from the flock, of proper value in silver shekels according to the sanctuary
shekel; it is a guilt offering.
And if a
soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the LORD; though he
wist it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.
If someone sins and
violates any of the LORD’s commandments even though he was unaware, he is guilty and shall bear his punishment.
If a
soul sin, and commit a
trespass against the LORD, and lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep, or in
fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath
deceived his neighbour;
“If someone sins and acts unfaithfully against the LORD by
deceiving his
neighbor in regard to a deposit or security entrusted to him or
stolen, or if he extorts his
neighbor And if any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings be eaten at all on the third day, it shall not be accepted, neither shall it be imputed unto him that offereth it: it shall be an
abomination, and the
soul that eateth of it shall bear his iniquity.
If any of the meat from his peace offering is eaten on the third day, it will not be accepted. It will not be credited to the one who presented it; it shall be an
abomination, and the one who eats of it shall bear his iniquity.
But the
soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that
pertain unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, even that
soul shall be cut off from his people.
But if
anyone who is unclean eats meat from the peace offering that belongs to the LORD, that person must be cut off from his people.
Moreover the
soul that shall touch any unclean thing, as the uncleanness of man, or any unclean beast, or any
abominable unclean thing, and eat of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which
pertain unto the LORD, even that
soul shall be cut off from his people.
If one touches anything unclean, whether human uncleanness, an unclean animal, or any unclean,
detestable thing, and then eats any of the meat of the peace offering that belongs to the LORD, that person must be cut off from his people.”
For
whosoever eateth the fat of the beast, of which men offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD, even the
soul that eateth it shall be cut off from his people.
If
anyone eats the fat of an animal from which an offering made by fire may be presented to the LORD, the one who eats it must be cut off from his people.
Whatsoever soul it be that eateth any manner of blood, even that
soul shall be cut off from his people.
If
anyone eats blood, that person must be cut off from his people.’”
And Moses
diligently sought the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was
angry with
Eleazar and
Ithamar, the sons of Aaron which were left alive, saying,
Later, Moses searched carefully for the goat of the sin offering, and behold, it had been burned up. He was
angry with
Eleazar and
Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and asked,
And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall
afflict your
souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:
This is to be a permanent statute for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month, you shall humble
yourselves and not do any work—whether the native or the foreigner who resides among you—
It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall
afflict your
souls, by a statute for ever.
It is a Sabbath of complete rest for you, that you may humble
yourselves; it is a permanent statute.
And
whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that
sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of blood; I will even set my face against that
soul that eateth blood, and will cut him off from among his people.
If
anyone from the house of Israel or a foreigner living among them eats any blood, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from among his people.
For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an
atonement for your
souls: for it is the blood that maketh an
atonement for the
soul.
For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make
atonement for your
souls upon the altar; for it is the blood that makes
atonement for the
soul.
Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood.
Therefore I say to the Israelites, ‘None of you may eat blood, nor may any foreigner living among you eat blood.’
And every
soul that eateth that which died of itself, or that which was
torn with beasts, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger, he shall both wash his clothes, and
bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even: then shall he be clean.
And any person, whether native or foreigner, who eats anything found dead or
mauled by wild beasts must wash his clothes and
bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening; then he will be clean.
For
whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the
souls that commit them shall be cut off from among their people.
Therefore
anyone who commits any of these abominations must be cut off from among his people.
Therefore every one that eateth it shall bear his iniquity, because he hath
profaned the
hallowed thing of the LORD: and that
soul shall be cut off from among his people.
Whoever eats it will bear his iniquity, for he has
profaned what is holy to the LORD. That person must be cut off from his people.
And the
soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go a
whoring after them, I will even set my face against that
soul, and will cut him off from among his people.
Whoever turns to mediums or spiritists to
prostitute himself with them, I will also set My face against that person and cut him off from his people.
And if a man shall lie with a woman having her sickness, and shall uncover her nakedness; he hath discovered her fountain, and she hath uncovered the fountain of her blood: and both of them shall be cut off from among their people.
If a man lies with a
menstruating woman and has sexual relations with her, he has exposed the
source of her flow, and she has uncovered the
source of her blood. Both of them must be cut off from among their people.
Ye shall therefore put difference between clean beasts and unclean, and between unclean fowls and clean: and ye shall not make your
souls abominable by beast, or by fowl, or by any manner of living thing that creepeth on the ground, which I have separated from you as unclean.
You are therefore to distinguish between clean and unclean animals and birds. Do not become
contaminated by any animal or bird, or by anything that crawls on the ground; I have set these apart as unclean for you.
Say unto them,
Whosoever he be of all your seed among your generations, that goeth unto the holy things, which the children of Israel
hallow unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, that
soul shall be cut off from my presence: I am the LORD.
Tell them that for the generations to come, if any of their descendants in a state of uncleanness approaches the sacred offerings that the Israelites
consecrate to the LORD, that person must be cut off from My presence. I am the LORD.
The soul which hath touched any such shall be unclean until even, and shall not eat of the holy things, unless he wash his flesh with water.
the man who touches any of these will remain unclean until evening. He must not eat from the sacred offerings unless he has bathed himself with water.
But if the priest
buy any
soul with his money, he shall eat of it, and he that is born in his house: they shall eat of his meat.
But if a priest buys a slave with his own money, or if a slave is born in his household, that slave may eat his food.
Also on the tenth day of this seventh month there shall be a day of
atonement: it shall be an holy
convocation unto you; and ye shall
afflict your
souls, and offer an offering made by fire unto the LORD.
“The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of
Atonement. You shall hold a sacred assembly and humble
yourselves, and present an offering made by fire to the LORD.
For
whatsoever soul it be that shall not be
afflicted in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his people.
If
anyone does not humble himself on this day, he must be cut off from his people.
And
whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work in that same day, the same
soul will I destroy from among his people.
I will destroy from among his people
anyone who does any work on this day.
It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye shall
afflict your
souls: in the ninth day of the month at even, from even unto even, shall ye
celebrate your sabbath.
It will be a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you shall humble
yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to keep your Sabbath.”
Then shalt thou cause the
trumpet of the jubile to
sound on the tenth day of the seventh month, in the day of
atonement shall ye make the
trumpet sound throughout all your land.
Then you are to
sound the horn far and wide on the tenth day of the seventh month, the Day of
Atonement. You shall
sound it throughout your land.
And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my
soul shall not
abhor you.
And I will make My dwelling place among you, and My
soul will not
despise you.
And if ye shall
despise my statutes, or if your
soul abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my commandments, but that ye break my covenant:
and if you
reject My statutes,
despise My ordinances, and neglect to carry out all My commandments, and so break My covenant,
And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcases upon the carcases of your idols, and my
soul shall
abhor you.
I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars, and
heap your lifeless bodies on the lifeless remains of your idols; and My
soul will
despise you.
And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a
faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the
sound of a
shaken leaf shall
chase them; and they shall
flee, as
fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursueth.
As for those of you who
survive, I will send a
faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies, so that even the
sound of a windblown leaf will put them to flight. And they will
flee as one flees the sword, and fall when no one pursues them.
The land also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her sabbaths, while she lieth
desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their iniquity: because, even because they
despised my judgments, and because their
soul abhorred my statutes.
For the land will be abandoned by them, and it will enjoy its Sabbaths by lying
desolate without them. And they will pay the penalty for their iniquity, because they rejected My ordinances and
abhorred My statutes.
On the
south side shall be the standard of the camp of
Reuben according to their armies: and the captain of the children of
Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.
On the
south side, the divisions of
Reuben are to camp under their standard:
The families of the sons of
Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle
southward.
The clans of the Kohathites were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle,
But the man that is clean, and is not in a journey, and forbeareth to keep the
passover, even the same
soul shall be cut off from among his people: because he brought not the offering of the LORD in his appointed season, that man shall bear his sin.
But if a man who is
ceremonially clean and is not on a journey still fails to observe the
Passover, he must be cut off from his people, because he did not present the LORD’s offering at its appointed time. That man will bear the consequences of his sin.
And when they shall blow with them, all the assembly shall
assemble themselves to thee at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
When both are
sounded, the whole congregation is to
assemble before you at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
And if they blow but with one
trumpet, then the princes, which are heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves unto thee.
But if only one is sounded, then the leaders, the heads of the clans of Israel, are to gather before you.
When ye blow an
alarm, then the camps that lie on the east parts shall go forward.
When you sound short blasts, the camps that lie on the east side are to set out.
When ye blow an
alarm the second time, then the camps that lie on the
south side shall take their journey: they shall blow an
alarm for their journeys.
When you sound the short blasts a second time, the camps that lie on the south side are to set out. The blasts are to signal them to set out.
But when the congregation is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not
sound an
alarm.
To
convene the assembly, you are to
sound long blasts, not short ones.
And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with the
trumpets; and they shall be to you for an
ordinance for ever throughout your generations.
The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to
sound the
trumpets. This shall be a permanent statute for you and the generations to come.
