For they could not keep it at
that time, because the priests had not
sanctified themselves sufficiently, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem.
since they had been unable to observe it at the regular time, because not enough priests had consecrated themselves and the people had not been gathered in Jerusalem.
So they established a decree to make
proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beer-
sheba even to
Dan,
that they should come to keep the
passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done it of a long time in such sort as it was written.
So they established a decree to
circulate a
proclamation throughout Israel, from
Beersheba to
Dan,
that the people should come to keep the
Passover of the LORD, the God of Israel, in Jerusalem. For they had not observed it as a nation as prescribed.
So the posts went with the letters from the king and his princes throughout all Israel and Judah, and according to the commandment of the king, saying, Ye children of Israel, turn again unto the LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and he will return to the
remnant of you,
that are escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria.
So the couriers went throughout Israel and Judah with letters from the king and his officials, which read: “Children of Israel, return to the LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, so
that He may return to those of you who remain, who have escaped the
grasp of the kings of Assyria.
And be not ye like your fathers, and like your brethren, which
trespassed against the LORD God of their fathers, who therefore gave them up to
desolation, as ye see.
Do not be like your fathers and brothers who were unfaithful to the LORD, the God of their fathers, so
that He made them an object of
horror, as you can see.
Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield
yourselves unto the LORD, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath
sanctified for ever: and serve the LORD your God,
that the fierceness of his wrath may turn away from you.
Now do not
stiffen your necks as your fathers did. Submit to the LORD and come to His sanctuary, which He has consecrated
forever. Serve the LORD your God, so
that His fierce anger will turn away from you.
For if ye turn again unto the LORD, your brethren and your children shall find
compassion before them
that lead them
captive, so
that they shall come again into this land: for the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful, and will not turn away his face from you, if ye return unto him.
For if you return to the LORD, your brothers and sons will receive mercy in the presence of their captors and will return to this land. For the LORD your God is
gracious and
merciful; He will not turn His face away from you if you return to Him.”
And they arose and took away the altars
that were in Jerusalem, and all the altars for incense took they away, and cast them into the
brook Kidron.
They proceeded to remove the altars in Jerusalem and to take away the incense altars and throw them into the Kidron Valley.
For there were many in the congregation
that were not
sanctified: therefore the Levites had the charge of the killing of the passovers for every one
that was not clean, to
sanctify them unto the LORD.
Since there were many in the assembly who had not consecrated themselves, the Levites were in charge of slaughtering the
Passover lambs for every unclean person to
consecrate the lambs to the LORD.
That prepareth his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers, though he be not
cleansed according to the
purification of the sanctuary.
who sets his heart on seeking God—the LORD, the God of his fathers—even if he is not
cleansed according to the
purification rules of the sanctuary.”
And the children of Israel
that were present at Jerusalem kept the feast of
unleavened bread seven days with great
gladness: and the Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day, singing with loud instruments unto the LORD.
The Israelites who were present in Jerusalem celebrated the Feast of
Unleavened Bread for seven days with great joy, and the Levites and priests praised the LORD day after day, accompanied by loud instruments of praise to the LORD.
And
Hezekiah spake
comfortably unto all the Levites
that taught the good knowledge of the LORD: and they did eat throughout the feast seven days, offering peace offerings, and making confession to the LORD God of their fathers.
And
Hezekiah encouraged all the Levites who performed
skillfully before the LORD. For seven days they
ate their assigned portion, sacrificing
fellowship offerings and giving
thanks to the LORD, the God of their fathers.
And all the congregation of Judah, with the priests and the Levites, and all the congregation
that came out of Israel, and the strangers
that came out of the land of Israel, and
that dwelt in Judah,
rejoiced.
Then the whole assembly of Judah
rejoiced along with the priests and Levites and the whole assembly
that had come from Israel, including the foreigners who had come from Israel and those who lived in Judah.
Now when all this was finished, all Israel
that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and
brake the images in pieces, and cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and
Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.
When all this had ended, the Israelites in attendance went out to the cities of Judah and broke up the sacred pillars,
chopped down the Asherah poles, and
tore down the high places and altars throughout Judah and Benjamin, as well as in Ephraim and
Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the Israelites returned to their cities, each to his own property.
Moreover he commanded the people that dwelt in Jerusalem to give the portion of the priests and the Levites, that they might be encouraged in the law of the LORD.
Moreover, he commanded the people living in Jerusalem to make a contribution for the priests and Levites so
that they could
devote themselves to the Law of the LORD.
And concerning the children of Israel and Judah,
that dwelt in the cities of Judah, they also brought in the
tithe of oxen and sheep, and the
tithe of holy things which were consecrated unto the LORD their God, and laid them by heaps.
And the Israelites and Judahites who lived in the cities of Judah also brought a
tithe of their herds and flocks and a
tithe of the holy things consecrated to the LORD their God, and they laid them in large heaps.
And
Azariah the chief priest of the house of
Zadok answered him, and said, Since the people began to bring the offerings into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat, and have left
plenty: for the LORD hath blessed his people; and
that which is left is this great store.
and
Azariah, the chief priest of the household of
Zadok, answered him, “Since the people began to bring their contributions into the house of the LORD, we have had enough to eat and there is
plenty left over, because the LORD has blessed His people; this great abundance is what is left over.”
Beside their
genealogy of males, from three years old and upward, even unto every one
that entereth into the house of the LORD, his daily portion for their service in their charges according to their courses;
In addition, they distributed portions to the males registered by
genealogy who were three years of age or older—to all who would enter the house of the LORD for their daily duties for service in the responsibilities of their divisions—
Also of the sons of Aaron the priests, which were in the fields of the suburbs of their cities, in every several city, the men
that were expressed by name, to give portions to all the males among the priests, and to all
that were reckoned by
genealogies among the Levites.
As for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who lived on the farmlands around each of their cities or in any other city, men were designated by name to distribute a portion to every male among the priests and to every
Levite listed by the
genealogies.
And thus did
Hezekiah throughout all Judah, and wrought
that which was good and right and truth before the LORD his God.
So this is what
Hezekiah did throughout Judah. He did what was good and upright and true before the LORD his God.
And in every work
that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law, and in the commandments, to seek his God, he did it with all his heart, and
prospered.
He was
diligent in every work
that he began in the service of the house of God, and in the law and the commandments, in order to seek his God. And so he
prospered.
And when
Hezekiah saw
that Sennacherib was come, and
that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,
So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the
brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?
Many people assembled and stopped up all the springs and the stream
that flowed through the land. “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find
plenty of water?” they said.
Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall
that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired
Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.
Then
Hezekiah worked
resolutely to rebuild all the broken sections of the wall and to raise up towers on it. He also built an outer wall and
reinforced the supporting terraces of the City of David, and he produced an abundance of weapons and shields.
Be strong and
courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude
that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:
“Be strong and
courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged before the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater One with us than with him.
After this did
Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid siege against
Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto
Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah
that were at Jerusalem, saying,
Later, as
Sennacherib king of Assyria and all his forces besieged
Lachish, he sent his servants to Jerusalem with a message for King
Hezekiah of Judah and all the people of Judah who were in Jerusalem:
“This is what
Sennacherib king of Assyria says: What is the basis of your confidence,
that you remain in Jerusalem under siege?
Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?
Who among all the gods of these nations that my fathers devoted to destruction has been able to deliver his people from my hand? How then can your God deliver you from my hand?
Then they
cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ speech unto the people of Jerusalem
that were on the wall, to
affright them, and to trouble them;
that they might take the city.
Then the Assyrians called out loudly in Hebrew to the people of Jerusalem who were on the wall, to
frighten and
terrify them in order to capture the city.
And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they
that came forth of his own
bowels slew him there with the sword.
and the LORD sent an angel who
annihilated every mighty man of
valor and every leader and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons struck him down with the sword.
And many brought gifts unto the LORD to Jerusalem, and presents to
Hezekiah king of Judah: so
that he was
magnified in the sight of all nations from
thenceforth.
Many brought offerings to Jerusalem for the LORD and valuable gifts for
Hezekiah king of Judah, and from then on he was
exalted in the eyes of all nations.
Notwithstanding
Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so
that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of
Hezekiah.
Then
Hezekiah humbled the pride of his heart—he and the people of Jerusalem—so
that the wrath of the LORD did not come upon them during the days of
Hezekiah.
This same
Hezekiah also stopped the upper watercourse of
Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And
Hezekiah prospered in all his works.
It was
Hezekiah who blocked the upper outlet of the Spring of
Gihon and channeled it down to the west side of the City of David. And
Hezekiah prospered in all
that he did.
Howbeit in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to
enquire of the wonder
that was done in the land, God left him, to try him,
that he might know all
that was in his heart.
And so when ambassadors of the rulers of Babylon were sent to him to inquire about the wonder
that had happened in the land, God left him alone to test him,
that He might know all
that was in
Hezekiah’s heart.
But did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, like unto the abominations of the heathen, whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD by following the abominations of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites.
For he built again the high places which
Hezekiah his father had broken down, and he reared up altars for
Baalim, and made groves, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.
For he rebuilt the high places
that his father
Hezekiah had
torn down, and he raised up altars for the Baals and made Asherah poles. And he worshiped and served all the host of heaven.
Neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers; so
that they will take
heed to do all
that I have commanded them, according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses.
I will never again cause the feet of the Israelites to leave the land that I assigned to your fathers, if only they are careful to do all that I have commanded them through Moses—all the laws, statutes, and judgments.”
So
Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to
err, and to do worse than the heathen, whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel.
So
Manasseh led the people of Judah and Jerusalem
astray, so
that they did greater evil than the nations
that the LORD had destroyed before the Israelites.
And prayed unto him: and he was intreated of him, and heard his
supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then
Manasseh knew
that the LORD he was God.
And when he prayed to Him, the LORD received his
plea and heard his petition; so He brought him back to Jerusalem and to his kingdom. Then
Manasseh knew
that the LORD is God.
And he took away the strange gods, and the
idol out of the house of the LORD, and all the altars
that he had built in the mount of the house of the LORD, and in Jerusalem, and cast them out of the city.
He removed the foreign gods and the
idol from the house of the LORD, along with all the altars he had built on the temple mount and in Jerusalem, and he
dumped them outside the city.
Now the rest of the acts of
Manasseh, and his prayer unto his God, and the words of the seers
that spake to him in the name of the LORD God of Israel, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel.
As for the rest of the acts of
Manasseh, along with his prayer to his God and the words of the seers who spoke to him in the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, they are indeed written in the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel.
But he did
that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as did
Manasseh his father: for Amon sacrificed unto all the carved images which
Manasseh his father had made, and served them;
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, as his father
Manasseh had done. Amon served and sacrificed to all the idols
that his father
Manasseh had made,
But the people of the land
slew all them
that had
conspired against king Amon; and the people of the land made
Josiah his son king in his
stead.
But the people of the land killed all those who had
conspired against King Amon, and they made his son
Josiah king in his place.
And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in the ways of David his father, and declined neither to the right hand, nor to the left.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the LORD and walked in the ways of his father David; he did not turn aside to the right or to the left.
And they
brake down the altars of
Baalim in his presence; and the images,
that were on high above them, he cut down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the
molten images, he
brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and
strowed it upon the graves of them
that had sacrificed unto them.
Then in his presence the altars of the Baals were
torn down, and he cut to pieces the incense altars
that were above them. He
shattered the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images,
crushed them to dust, and scattered them over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.
And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money
that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites
that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of
Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the
remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.
So they went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money
that had been brought into the house of God, which the Levites at the doors had collected from the people of
Manasseh and Ephraim, from all the
remnant of Israel, Judah, and Benjamin, and from the people of Jerusalem.
And they put it in the hand of the workmen
that had the oversight of the house of the LORD, and they gave it to the workmen
that wrought in the house of the LORD, to repair and
amend the house:
They put it into the hands of the supervisors of those doing the work of the house of the LORD, who in turn gave it to the workmen restoring and repairing the house of the LORD.
Even to the artificers and builders gave they it, to
buy hewn stone, and timber for couplings, and to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed.
They also gave money to the carpenters and builders to
buy dressed stone, as well as timbers for couplings and beams for the buildings
that the kings of Judah had allowed to
deteriorate.
And the men did the work faithfully: and the overseers of them were Jahath and
Obadiah, the Levites, of the sons of Merari; and
Zechariah and Meshullam, of the sons of the Kohathites, to set it forward; and other of the Levites, all
that could skill of instruments of musick.
And the men did the work faithfully. The Levites overseeing them were Jahath and
Obadiah, descendants of Merari, and
Zechariah and Meshullam, descendants of
Kohath. Other Levites, all skilled with musical instruments,
Also they were over the bearers of burdens, and were overseers of all
that wrought the work in any manner of service: and of the Levites there were
scribes, and officers, and
porters.
were over the laborers and
supervised all who did the work, task by task. Some of the Levites were
secretaries, officers, and gatekeepers.
And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the LORD given by Moses.
While they were bringing out the money that had been taken into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the LORD written by Moses.
And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it.
Then Shaphan brought the book to the king and reported, “Your servants are doing all that has been placed in their hands.
And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen.
They have paid out the money that was found in the house of the LORD and have put it into the hands of the supervisors and workers.”
And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.
When the king heard the words of the Law, he
tore his clothes
Go,
enquire of the LORD for me, and for them
that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book
that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD
that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all
that is written in this book.
“Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah concerning the words in the book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the LORD that has been poured out on us because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD by doing all that is written in this book.”
And Hilkiah, and they
that the king had appointed, went to Huldah the
prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath, the son of Hasrah, keeper of the
wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college:) and they spake to her to
that effect.
So Hilkiah and those the king had designated went and spoke to Huldah the
prophetess, the wife of Shallum son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, the keeper of the
wardrobe. She lived in Jerusalem, in the Second District.
And she answered them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell ye the man that sent you to me,
And Huldah said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Tell the man who sent you
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:
that this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring
calamity on this place and on its people, according to all the curses written in the book
that has been read in the presence of the king of Judah,
Because they have
forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods,
that they might
provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place, and shall not be
quenched.
because they have
forsaken Me and burned incense to other gods,
that they might
provoke Me to anger with all the works of their hands. My wrath will be poured out upon this place and will not be
quenched.’
And as for the king of Judah, who sent you to
enquire of the LORD, so shall ye say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard;
But as for the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, tell him that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘As for the words that you heard,
Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.
‘Now I will indeed gather you to your fathers, and you will be gathered to your grave in peace. Your eyes will not see all the
calamity that I will bring on this place and on its inhabitants.’” So they brought her answer back to the king.
And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.
And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the Levites—all the people small and great—and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his
testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book.
So the king stood by the
pillar and made a covenant before the LORD to follow the LORD and to keep His commandments, decrees, and statutes with all his heart and all his soul, and to carry out the words of this covenant
that were written in this book.
And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
Then he had
everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin take a stand in agreement to it. So all the people of Jerusalem carried out the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
And
Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries
that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all
that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
And
Josiah removed all the abominations from all the lands belonging to the Israelites, and he required
everyone in Israel to serve the LORD their God. Throughout his reign they did not turn aside from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel, which were holy unto the LORD, Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build; it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders: serve now the LORD your God, and his people Israel,
To the Levites who taught all Israel and were holy to the LORD,
Josiah said: “Put the holy ark in the temple built by Solomon son of David king of Israel. It is not to be carried around on your shoulders. Now serve the LORD your God and His people Israel.
So kill the
passover, and
sanctify yourselves, and prepare your brethren,
that they may do according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
Slaughter the
Passover lambs,
consecrate yourselves, and make preparations for your fellow countrymen to carry out the word of the LORD given by Moses.”
And
Josiah gave to the people, of the flock, lambs and kids, all for the
passover offerings, for all
that were present, to the number of thirty thousand, and three thousand bullocks: these were of the king’s substance.
From his own flocks and herds
Josiah contributed 30,000 lambs and goats
plus 3,000 bulls for the
Passover offerings for all the people who were present.
And they removed the burnt offerings, that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people, to offer unto the LORD, as it is written in the book of Moses. And so did they with the oxen.
They set aside the burnt offerings to be given to the divisions of the families of the people to offer to the LORD, as is written in the Book of Moses; and they did the same with the bulls.
So all the service of the LORD was prepared the same day, to keep the
passover, and to offer burnt offerings upon the altar of the LORD, according to the commandment of king
Josiah.
So on
that day the entire service of the LORD was carried out for
celebrating the
Passover and offering burnt offerings on the altar of the LORD, according to the command of King
Josiah.
And the children of Israel
that were present kept the
passover at
that time, and the feast of
unleavened bread seven days.
The Israelites who were present also observed the
Passover at
that time, as well as the Feast of
Unleavened Bread for seven days.
And there was no
passover like to
that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a
passover as
Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel
that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
No such
Passover had been observed in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel ever observed a
Passover like the one
that Josiah observed with the priests, the Levites, all Judah, the Israelites who were present, and the people of Jerusalem.
But he sent ambassadors to him, saying, What have I to do with thee, thou king of Judah? I come not against thee this day, but against the house
wherewith I have war: for God commanded me to make
haste:
forbear thee from
meddling with God, who is with me,
that he destroy thee not.
But Neco sent messengers to him, saying, “What is the issue between you and me, O king of Judah? I have not come against you
today, but I am fighting another dynasty. God told me to
hurry; so stop
opposing God, who is with me, or He will destroy you!”
Nevertheless
Josiah would not turn his face from him, but
disguised himself,
that he might fight with him, and
hearkened not unto the words of
Necho from the mouth of God, and came to fight in the valley of
Megiddo.
Josiah, however, did not turn away from him; instead, in order to
engage him in battle, he
disguised himself. He did not
listen to Neco’s words from the mouth of God, but went to fight him on the Plain of
Megiddo.
His servants therefore took him out of
that chariot, and put him in the second
chariot that he had; and they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died, and was buried in one of the
sepulchres of his fathers. And all Judah and Jerusalem
mourned for
Josiah.
So his servants took him out of his
chariot, put him in his second
chariot, and brought him to Jerusalem, where he died. And
Josiah was buried in the tomb of his fathers, and all Judah and Jerusalem
mourned for him.
Now the rest of the acts of
Josiah, and his goodness, according to
that which was written in the law of the LORD,
As for the rest of the acts of
Josiah, along with his deeds of loving devotion according to what is written in the Law of the LORD—
Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem: and he did
that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God.
Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God.
Now the rest of the acts of
Jehoiakim, and his abominations which he did, and
that which was found in him, behold, they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah: and
Jehoiachin his son reigned in his
stead.
As for the rest of the acts of
Jehoiakim, the abominations he committed, and all
that was found against him, they are indeed written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah. And his son
Jehoiachin reigned in his place.
Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: and he did
that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.
Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months and ten days. And he did evil in the sight of the LORD.
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD his God, and humbled not himself before Jeremiah the prophet speaking from the mouth of the LORD.
And he did evil in the sight of the LORD his God and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke for the LORD.
Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldees, who
slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no
compassion upon young man or
maiden, old man, or him
that stooped for age: he gave them all into his hand.
So He brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who put their young men to the sword in the sanctuary,
sparing neither young men nor young women, neither elderly nor infirm. God gave them all into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar,
And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:
Those who escaped the sword were carried by
Nebuchadnezzar into exile in Babylon, and they became servants to him and his sons until the kingdom of Persia came to power.
Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,
that the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD
stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia,
that he made a
proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to
fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD
stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a
proclamation throughout his kingdom and to put it in writing as follows:
Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,
that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD
stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia,
that he made a
proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,
In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, to
fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through Jeremiah, the LORD
stirred the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia to send a
proclamation throughout his kingdom and to put it in writing as follows:
And
whosoever remaineth in any place where he sojourneth, let the men of his place help him with silver, and with gold, and with goods, and with beasts, beside the
freewill offering for the house of God
that is in Jerusalem.
And let every
survivor, wherever he lives, be assisted by the men of
that region with silver, gold, goods, and
livestock, along with a
freewill offering for the house of God in Jerusalem.’”
And all they that were about them strengthened their hands with vessels of silver, with gold, with goods, and with beasts, and with precious things, beside all that was willingly offered.
And all their neighbors supported them with articles of silver and gold, with goods and
livestock, and with valuables, in addition to all their
freewill offerings.
Also Cyrus the king brought forth the vessels of the house of the LORD, which
Nebuchadnezzar had brought forth out of Jerusalem, and had put them in the house of his gods;
King Cyrus also brought out the articles belonging to the house of the LORD
that Nebuchadnezzar had carried away from Jerusalem and placed in the temple of his gods.
All the vessels of gold and of silver were five thousand and four hundred. All these did Sheshbazzar bring up with them of the captivity that were brought up from Babylon unto Jerusalem.
In all, there were 5,400 gold and silver articles. Sheshbazzar brought all these along when the exiles went up from Babylon to Jerusalem.
Now these are the children of the province
that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city;
Now these are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,
And these were they which went up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsa,
Cherub, Addan, and Immer: but they could not
shew their father’s house, and their seed, whether they were of Israel:
The following came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha,
Cherub, Addan, and Immer, but could not prove
that their families were descended from Israel:
These sought their register among those
that were reckoned by
genealogy, but they were not found: therefore were they, as
polluted, put from the priesthood.
These men searched for their family records, but they could not find them and so were excluded from the priesthood as unclean.
And the Tirshatha said unto them,
that they should not eat of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with
Urim and with
Thummim.
The governor ordered them not to eat the most holy things until there was a priest to
consult the
Urim and
Thummim.
And afterward offered the continual burnt offering, both of the new moons, and of all the set feasts of the LORD
that were consecrated, and of every one
that willingly offered a
freewill offering unto the LORD.
After
that, they presented the regular burnt offerings and those for New Moons and for all the appointed sacred feasts of the LORD, as well as all the
freewill offerings brought to the LORD.
They gave money also unto the masons, and to the carpenters; and meat, and drink, and oil, unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring
cedar trees from
Lebanon to the sea of
Joppa, according to the grant
that they had of Cyrus king of Persia.
They gave money to the masons and carpenters, and food and drink and oil to the people of
Sidon and Tyre to bring
cedar logs from
Lebanon to
Joppa by sea, as authorized by Cyrus king of Persia.
Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began
Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the
remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they
that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD.
In the second month of the second year after they had arrived at the house of God in Jerusalem,
Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jozadak, and the rest of their associates including the priests, the Levites, and all who had returned to Jerusalem from the captivity, began the work. They appointed Levites twenty years of age or older to
supervise the construction of the house of the LORD.
But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men,
that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes,
wept with a loud voice; and many
shouted aloud for joy:
But many of the older priests, Levites, and family heads who had seen the first temple
wept loudly when they saw the foundation of this temple. Still, many others
shouted joyfully.
So
that the people could not
discern the noise of the
shout of joy from the noise of the
weeping of the people: for the people
shouted with a loud
shout, and the noise was heard
afar off.
The people could not distinguish the shouts of joy from the sound of
weeping, because the people were making so much noise. And the sound was heard from
afar.
Now when the
adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard
that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;
When the enemies of Judah and Benjamin heard that the exiles were building a temple for the LORD, the God of Israel,
And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble
Asnapper brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest
that are on this side the river, and at such a time.
and the rest of the peoples whom the great and honorable Ashurbanipal
deported and settled in the cities of Samaria and elsewhere west of the Euphrates.
This is the copy of the letter
that they sent unto him, even unto
Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.
(This is the text of the letter they sent to him.) To King
Artaxerxes, From your servants, the men west of the Euphrates:
Be it known unto the king,
that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the
rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.
Let it be known to the king
that the Jews who came from you to us have returned to Jerusalem. And they are rebuilding
that rebellious and wicked city, restoring its walls, and repairing its foundations.
