Seven days shalt thou keep a solemn feast unto the LORD thy God in the place which the LORD shall choose: because the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in all thine increase, and in all the works of thine hands,
therefore thou shalt surely
rejoice.
For seven days you shall
celebrate a feast to the LORD your God in the place He will choose, because the LORD your God will
bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, so that your joy will be complete.
If
there be found among you, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that hath wrought wickedness in the sight of the LORD thy God, in
transgressing his covenant,
If a man or woman among you in one of the towns that the LORD your God gives you is found doing evil in the sight of the LORD your God by
transgressing His covenant
If
there arise a matter too hard for thee in judgment, between blood and blood, between
plea and
plea, and between stroke and stroke, being matters of controversy within thy gates: then shalt thou arise, and get thee up into the place which the LORD thy God shall choose;
If a case is too difficult for you to judge, whether the controversy within your gates is regarding
bloodshed, lawsuits, or assaults, you must go up to the place the LORD your God will choose.
And the man that will do
presumptuously, and will not
hearken unto the priest that standeth to minister
there before the LORD thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.
But the man who acts
presumptuously, refusing to
listen either to the priest who stands
there to serve the LORD your God, or to the judge, must be put to death. You must
purge the evil from Israel.
When thou art come unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt possess it, and shalt dwell therein, and shalt say, I will set a king over me, like as all the nations that are about me;
When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you and have taken possession of it and settled in it, and you say, “Let us set a king over us like all the nations around us,”
And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them:
It is to remain with him, and he is to read from it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear the LORD his God by carefully observing all the words of this instruction and these statutes.
Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.
Although they have no inheritance among their brothers, the LORD is their inheritance, as He promised them.
Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the LORD.
then he shall serve in the name of the LORD his God like all his fellow Levites who stand there before the LORD.
When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.
When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not
imitate the
detestable ways of the nations
there.
There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth
divination, or an observer of times, or an
enchanter, or a
witch,
Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, practices
divination or
conjury, interprets omens, practices
sorcery,
And the officers shall speak unto the people, saying, What man is
there that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man
dedicate it.
Furthermore, the officers are to address the army, saying, “Has any man built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man
dedicate it.
And what man is
there that hath
betrothed a wife, and hath not taken her? let him go and return unto his house, lest he die in the battle, and another man take her.
Has any man become
pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man marry her.”
And the officers shall speak further unto the people, and they shall say, What man is
there that is fearful and
fainthearted? let him go and return unto his house, lest his brethren’s heart
faint as well as his heart.
Then the officers shall speak further to the army, saying, “Is any man afraid or
fainthearted? Let him return home, so that the hearts of his brothers will not
melt like his own.”
And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.
If they accept your offer of peace and open their gates, all the people there will become forced laborers to serve you.
And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt
smite every male
thereof with the edge of the sword:
When the LORD your God has delivered it into your hand, you must put every male to the sword.
But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the
spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto
thyself; and thou shalt eat the
spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee.
But the women, children,
livestock, and whatever else is in the city—all its
spoil—you may take as
plunder, and you shall use the
spoil of your enemies that the LORD your God gives you.
When thou shalt
besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees
thereof by forcing an
axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege:
When you lay siege to a city for an extended time while fighting against it to capture it, you must not destroy its trees by putting an
axe to them, because you can eat their fruit. You must not cut them down. Are the trees of the field human, that you should
besiege them?
And the elders of that city shall bring down the
heifer unto a rough valley, which is neither eared nor sown, and shall strike off the
heifer’s neck
there in the valley:
bring the
heifer to a valley with running water that has not been
plowed or sown, and break its neck
there by the stream.
Then they shall bring out the
damsel to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die: because she hath wrought folly in Israel, to play the
whore in her father’s house: so shalt thou put evil away from among you.
she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house, and
there the men of her city will stone her to death. For she has committed an
outrage in Israel by being
promiscuous in her father’s house. So you must
purge the evil from among you.
If a
damsel that is a virgin be
betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her;
If
there is a virgin
pledged in marriage to a man, and another man encounters her in the city and sleeps with her,
But unto the
damsel thou shalt do nothing;
there is in the
damsel no sin worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter:
Do nothing to the young woman, because she has committed no sin worthy of death. This case is just like one in which a man attacks his
neighbor and murders him.
When he found her in the field, the
betrothed woman
cried out, but
there was no one to save her.
If there be among you any man, that is not clean by reason of uncleanness that chanceth him by night, then shall he go abroad out of the camp, he shall not come within the camp:
If any man among you becomes unclean because of a
nocturnal emission, he must leave the camp and stay outside.
And thou shalt have a
paddle upon thy weapon; and it shall be, when thou
wilt ease
thyself abroad, thou shalt
dig therewith, and shalt turn back and cover that which cometh from thee:
For the LORD thy God walketh in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and to give up thine enemies before thee; therefore shall thy camp be holy: that he see no unclean thing in thee, and turn away from thee.
For the LORD your God walks throughout your camp to protect you and deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, lest He see anything unclean among you and turn away from you.
There shall be no
whore of the daughters of Israel, nor a
sodomite of the sons of Israel.
But thou shalt remember that thou
wast a
bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence:
therefore I command thee to do this thing.
Remember that you were slaves in Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you from that place. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.
When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast
forgot a
sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to
fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD thy God may
bless thee in all the work of thine hands.
If you are harvesting in your field and
forget a
sheaf there, do not go back to get it. It is to be left for the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow, so that the LORD your God may
bless you in all the work of your hands.
And thou shalt remember that thou
wast a
bondman in the land of Egypt:
therefore I command thee to do this thing.
Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt. Therefore I am commanding you to do this.
If
there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall
justify the righteous, and
condemn the wicked.
If
there is a dispute between men, they are to go to court to be judged, so that the innocent may be
acquitted and the guilty condemned.
Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath given thee rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt
blot out the
remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not
forget it.
When the LORD your God gives you rest from the enemies around you in the land that He is giving you to possess as an inheritance, you are to
blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven. Do not
forget!
And it shall be, when thou art come in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and possessest it, and dwellest therein;
When you enter the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, and you take possession of it and settle in it,
That thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the earth, which thou shalt bring of thy land that the LORD thy God giveth thee, and shalt put it in a
basket, and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name
there.
you are to take some of the firstfruits of all your produce from the soil of the land that the LORD your God is giving you and put them in a
basket. Then go to the place the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for His Name,
And thou shalt speak and say before the LORD thy God, A
Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and
sojourned there with a few, and became
there a nation, great, mighty, and
populous:
and you are to declare before the LORD your God, “My father was a wandering
Aramean, and he went down to Egypt few in number and lived
there and became a great nation, mighty and numerous.
I have not eaten
thereof in my
mourning, neither have I taken away ought
thereof for any unclean use, nor given ought
thereof for the dead: but I have
hearkened to the voice of the LORD my God, and have done according to all that thou hast commanded me.
I have not eaten any of the sacred portion while in
mourning, or removed any of it while unclean, or offered any of it for the dead. I have obeyed the LORD my God; I have done everything You commanded me.
This day the LORD thy God hath commanded thee to do these statutes and judgments: thou shalt therefore keep and do them with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
The LORD your God commands you this day to follow these statutes and ordinances. You must be careful to follow them with all your heart and with all your soul.
Therefore it shall be when ye be gone over Jordan, that ye shall set up these stones, which I command you this day, in mount
Ebal, and thou shalt
plaister them with
plaister.
And when you have crossed the Jordan, you are to set up these stones on Mount
Ebal, as I am commanding you
today, and you are to coat them with
plaster.
And there shalt thou build an altar unto the LORD thy God, an altar of stones: thou shalt not lift up any iron tool upon them.
Moreover, you are to build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You must not use any iron tool on them.
Thou shalt build the altar of the LORD thy God of whole stones: and thou shalt offer burnt offerings
thereon unto the LORD thy God:
You shall build the altar of the LORD your God with uncut stones and offer upon it burnt offerings to the LORD your God.
And thou shalt offer peace offerings, and shalt eat
there, and
rejoice before the LORD thy God.
There you are to sacrifice your peace offerings, eating them and
rejoicing in the presence of the LORD your God.
Thou shalt therefore obey the voice of the LORD thy God, and do his commandments and his statutes, which I command thee this day.
You shall
therefore obey the voice of the LORD your God and follow His commandments and statutes I am giving you
today.”
Thou shalt
betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell
therein: thou shalt plant a
vineyard, and shalt not gather the grapes
thereof.
You will be
pledged in marriage to a woman, but another man will
violate her. You will build a house but will not live in it. You will plant a
vineyard but will not enjoy its fruit.
Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat
thereof: thine
ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to
rescue them.
Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, but you will not eat any of it. Your
donkey will be taken away and not returned to you. Your flock will be given to your enemies, and no one will save you.
Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day long: and there shall be no might in thine hand.
Your sons and daughters will be given to another nation, while your eyes grow
weary looking for them day after day, with no power in your hand.
The LORD shall bring thee, and thy king which thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation which neither thou nor thy fathers have known; and there shalt thou serve other gods, wood and stone.
The LORD will bring you and the king you
appoint to a nation neither you nor your fathers have known, and
there you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone.
Therefore shalt thou serve thine enemies which the LORD shall send against thee, in hunger, and in
thirst, and in nakedness, and in want of all things: and he shall put a yoke of iron upon thy neck, until he have destroyed thee.
you will serve your enemies the LORD will send against you in famine,
thirst, nakedness, and
destitution. He will place an iron yoke on your neck until He has destroyed you.
And the LORD shall
scatter thee among all people, from the one end of the earth even unto the other; and
there thou shalt serve other gods, which neither thou nor thy fathers have known, even wood and stone.
Then the LORD will
scatter you among all the nations, from one end of the earth to the other, and
there you will worship other gods, gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your fathers have known.
And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee
there a
trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:
Among those nations you will find no
repose, not even a resting place for the sole of your foot.
There the LORD will give you a
trembling heart, failing eyes, and a
despairing soul.
And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way
whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and
there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for
bondmen and
bondwomen, and no man shall
buy you.
The LORD will return you to Egypt in ships by a route that I said you should never see again.
There you will sell
yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will
buy you.”
Keep
therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may
prosper in all that ye do.
So keep and follow the words of this covenant, that you may
prosper in all you do.
Lest
there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest
there should be among you a root that beareth gall and
wormwood;
Make sure
there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you
today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations. Make sure
there is no root among you that bears such poisonous and bitter fruit,
And that the whole land
thereof is
brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth
therein, like the overthrow of
Sodom, and
Gomorrah, Admah, and
Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:
All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt, unsown and unproductive, with no plant growing on it, just like the destruction of
Sodom and
Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in His fierce anger.
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book:
Therefore the anger of the LORD burned against this land, and He brought upon it every
curse written in this book.
If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he
fetch thee:
Even if you have been banished to the
farthest horizon, He will gather you and return you from
there.
I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and
cursing:
therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you
today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and
cursing.
Therefore choose life, so that you and your descendants may live,
Now therefore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel: put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel.
Now
therefore, write down for
yourselves this song and teach it to the Israelites; have them
recite it, so that it may be a witness for Me against them.
Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel.
So that very day Moses wrote down this song and taught it to the Israelites.
Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.
“Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, so that it may remain there as a witness against you.
So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him.
The LORD alone led him, and no foreign god was with him.
For they are a nation void of counsel, neither is there any understanding in them.
Israel is a nation devoid of counsel, with no understanding among them.
For the LORD shall judge his people, and
repent himself for his servants, when he
seeth that their power is gone, and
there is none shut up, or left.
For the LORD will
vindicate His people and have
compassion on His servants when He sees that their strength is gone and no one remains, slave or free.
See now that I, even I, am he, and
there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I
heal: neither is
there any that can deliver out of my hand.
See now that I am He;
there is no God besides Me. I bring death and I give life; I wound and I
heal, and
there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
And die in the mount
whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount
Hor, and was gathered unto his people:
And
there on the mountain that you
climb, you will die and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount
Hor and was gathered to his people.
And for the precious things of the earth and
fulness thereof, and for the good will of him that dwelt in the
bush: let the blessing come upon the head of Joseph, and upon the top of the head of him that was separated from his brethren.
with the choice gifts of the land and everything in it, and with the favor of Him who dwelt in the burning
bush. May these rest on the head of Joseph and crown the
brow of the prince of his brothers.
They shall call the people unto the mountain;
there they shall offer sacrifices of righteousness: for they shall
suck of the abundance of the seas, and of treasures
hid in the sand.
They will call the peoples to a mountain; there they will offer sacrifices of righteousness. For they will feast on the abundance of the seas and the hidden treasures of the sand.”
And he provided the first part for himself, because
there, in a portion of the
lawgiver, was he seated; and he came with the heads of the people, he executed the justice of the LORD, and his judgments with Israel.
He chose the best land for himself, because a ruler’s portion was reserved for him there. He came with the leaders of the people; he administered the LORD’s justice and His ordinances for Israel.”
There is none like unto the God of
Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his
excellency on the sky.
“
There is none like the God of
Jeshurun, who rides the heavens to your aid, and the clouds in His majesty.
So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.
So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, as the LORD had said.
And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,
Since that time, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face—
Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.
“Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore arise, you and all these people, and cross over the Jordan into the land that I am giving to the children of Israel.
There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor
forsake thee.
No one shall stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so will I be with you; I will never leave you nor
forsake you.
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt
meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written
therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth;
meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will
prosper and succeed in all you do.
And Joshua the son of
Nun sent out of
Shittim two men to
spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, even
Jericho. And they went, and came into an
harlot’s house, named
Rahab, and
lodged there.
And it was told the king of
Jericho, saying, Behold,
there came men in
hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the country.
And it was reported to the king of
Jericho: “Behold, some men of Israel have come here
tonight to
spy out the land.”
And the woman took the two men, and
hid them, and said thus,
There came men unto me, but I
wist not whence they were:
But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. So she said, “
Yes, the men did come to me, but I did not know where they had come from.
But she had brought them up to the roof of the house, and
hid them with the stalks of flax, which she had laid in order upon the roof.
(But
Rahab had taken them up to the roof and hidden them among the stalks of flax that she had laid out
there.)
And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did
melt, neither did
there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.
When we heard this, our hearts melted and
everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.
Now
therefore, I pray you,
swear unto me by the LORD, since I have shewed you kindness, that ye will also
shew kindness unto my father’s house, and give me a true
token:
Now
therefore, please
swear to me by the LORD that you will indeed show kindness to my family, because I showed kindness to you. Give me a sure sign
And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide
yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.
“Go to the hill country,” she said, “so that your pursuers will not find you. Hide
yourselves there for three days until they have returned; then go on your way.”
And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.
So the
spies went out into the hill country and stayed
there three days, until their pursuers had returned without finding them, having searched all along the road.
And Joshua rose early in the morning; and they removed from
Shittim, and came to Jordan, he and all the children of Israel, and
lodged there before they passed over.
Early the next morning Joshua got up and left
Shittim with all the Israelites. They went as far as the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over.
Yet
there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure: come not near unto it, that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way
heretofore.
But keep a distance of about two thousand cubits between
yourselves and the ark. Do not go near it, so that you can see the way to go, since you have never traveled this way before.”
Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel, out of every tribe a man.
Now choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe.
Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a
memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.
you are to tell them, ‘The waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters were cut off.’
Therefore these stones will be a
memorial to the Israelites
forever.”
And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they
lodged, and laid them down
there.
Thus the Israelites did as Joshua had commanded them. They took up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, one for each tribe of Israel, just as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them to the camp, where they set them down.
And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.
Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle of the Jordan, in the place where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant stood. And the stones are there to this day.
Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of Jordan.
So Joshua commanded the priests, “Come up from the Jordan.”
And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in
Gilgal.
And
there at
Gilgal Joshua set up the twelve stones they had taken from the Jordan.
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the
Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the
Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was
there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the
Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and their spirits failed for fear of the Israelites.
And it came to pass, when they had done
circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole.
And after all the nation had been
circumcised, they stayed
there in the camp until they were
healed.
And the
manna ceased on the
morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel
manna any more; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of
Canaan that year.
And the day after they had eaten from the produce of the land, the
manna ceased.
There was no more
manna for the Israelites, so that year they began to eat the crops of the land of
Canaan.
And it came to pass, when Joshua was by
Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold,
there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our
adversaries?
Now when Joshua was near
Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in His hand. Joshua approached Him and asked, “Are You for us or for our enemies?”
And the LORD said unto Joshua, See, I have given into thine hand
Jericho, and the king
thereof, and the mighty men of valour.
And the LORD said to Joshua, “Behold, I have delivered
Jericho into your hand, along with its king and its mighty men of
valor.
And it shall come to pass, that when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when ye hear the sound of the
trumpet, all the people shall
shout with a great
shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall
ascend up every man straight before him.
And when
there is a long blast of the ram’s horn and you hear its sound, have all the people give a mighty
shout. Then the wall of the city will
collapse and all your people will charge straight into the city.”
So the ark of the LORD compassed the city, going about it once: and they came into the camp, and
lodged in the camp.
So he had the ark of the LORD carried around the city, circling it once. And the people returned to the camp and spent the night there.
And the city shall be
accursed, even it, and all that are
therein, to the LORD: only
Rahab the
harlot shall live, she and all that are with her in the house, because she
hid the messengers that we sent.
Now the city and everything in it must be devoted to the LORD for destruction. Only
Rahab the
prostitute and all those with her in her house will live, because she
hid the
spies we sent.
And they burnt the city with fire, and all that was therein: only the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD.
Then the Israelites burned up the city and everything in it. However, they put the silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the LORD’s house.
And Joshua
adjured them at that time, saying,
Cursed be the man before the LORD, that riseth up and buildeth this city
Jericho: he shall lay the foundation
thereof in his
firstborn, and in his youngest son shall he set up the gates of it.
At that time Joshua
invoked this solemn oath: “
Cursed before the LORD is the man who rises up and rebuilds this city,
Jericho; at the cost of his
firstborn he will lay its foundations; at the cost of his youngest he will set up its gates.”
And they returned to Joshua, and said unto him, Let not all the people go up; but let about two or three thousand men go up and
smite Ai; and make not all the people to labour thither; for they are but few.
On returning to Joshua, they reported, “
There is no need to send all the people; two or three thousand men are enough to go up and attack
Ai. Since the people of
Ai are so few, you need not wear out all our people
there.”
So
there went up thither of the people about three thousand men: and they fled before the men of
Ai.
So about three thousand men went up, but they fled before the men of
Ai.
