And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, and they
prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again the third time, and they
prophesied also.
When
this was reported to Saul, he sent more messengers, but they began to
prophesy as well. So Saul tried again and sent messengers a third time, and even they began to
prophesy.
And he said unto him, God
forbid; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing either great or small, but that he will
shew it me: and why should my father hide
this thing from me? it is not so.
“Far from it!”
Jonathan replied. “You will not die. Indeed, my father does nothing, great or small, without telling me. So why would he hide
this matter from me?
This cannot be true!”
And David
sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, Let not
Jonathan know
this, lest he be
grieved: but truly as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step between me and death.
But David again
vowed, “Your father knows very well that I have found favor in your eyes, and he has said, ‘
Jonathan must not know of
this, or he will be
grieved.’ As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”
And
Jonathan said unto David, O LORD God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to
morrow any time, or the third day, and, behold, if there be good toward David, and I then send not unto thee, and
shew it thee;
and
Jonathan said, “By the LORD, the God of Israel, I will sound out my father by
this time
tomorrow or the next day. If he is favorable toward you, will I not send for you and tell you?
And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou
didst hide
thyself when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.
When you have stayed three days,
hurry down to the place you
hid on the day
this trouble began, and remain beside the stone Ezel.
And, behold, I will send a
lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the
lad, Behold, the arrows are on
this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no
hurt; as the LORD liveth.
Then I will send a boy and say, ‘Go, find the arrows!’ Now, if I expressly say to him, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; bring them,’ then come, because as surely as the LORD lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger.
For as long as the son of
Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and
fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.
For as long as the son of
Jesse lives on
this earth, neither you nor your
kingship shall be established. Now send for him and bring him to me, for he must surely die!”
And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common,
yea, though it were
sanctified this day in the vessel.
David answered, “Women have indeed been kept from us, as is usual when I set out. And the
equipment of the young men is holy, as it is even on common missions, and all the more at
this time.”
And the priest said, The sword of
Goliath the
Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here
wrapped in a cloth behind the
ephod: if thou
wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.
The priest replied, “The sword of
Goliath the
Philistine, whom you killed in the Valley of Elah, is here; it is
wrapped in a cloth behind the
ephod. If you want, you may take it. For there is no other but
this one.” And David said, “There is none like it; give it to me.”
And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
But the servants of Achish said to him, “Is this not David, the king of the land? Did they not sing about him in their dances, saying: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?”
Have I need of
mad men, that ye have brought
this fellow to play the
mad man in my presence? shall
this fellow come into my house?
Am I in need of
madmen, that you have brought
this man to
rave in my presence? Must
this man come into my house?”
That all of you have
conspired against me, and there is none that sheweth me that my son hath made a league with the son of
Jesse, and there is none of you that is
sorry for me, or sheweth unto me that my son hath
stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at
this day?
Is that why all of you have
conspired against me? Not one of you told me that my own son had made a covenant with the son of
Jesse. Not one of you has shown
concern for me or revealed to me that my son has
stirred up my own servant to lie in wait against me, as is the case
today.”
And Saul said unto him, Why have ye
conspired against me, thou and the son of
Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast enquired of God for him, that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at
this day?
And Saul asked him, “Why have you and the son of
Jesse conspired against me? You gave him bread and a sword and inquired of God for him so that he could rise up against me to lie in wait, as he is doing
today.”
Did I then begin to
enquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king
impute any thing unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: for thy servant knew nothing of all
this, less or more.
Was that day the first time I inquired of God for him? Far be it from me! Let not the king
accuse your servant or any of my father’s household, for your servant knew nothing of
this whole
affair—not in part or in whole.”
And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth.
saying, “Do not be afraid, for my father Saul will never lay a hand on you. And you will be king over Israel, and I will be your second-in-command. Even my father Saul knows this is true.”
Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon.
and Saul and his men went to seek him. When David was told about it, he went down to the rock and stayed in the Wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard of this, he pursued David there.
And Saul went on
this side of the mountain, and David and his men on that side of the mountain: and David made
haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compassed David and his men round about to take them.
Saul was proceeding along one side of the mountain, and David and his men along the other side. Even though David was
hurrying to get away, Saul and his men were closing in on David and his men to capture them.
And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the
skirt of Saul’s
robe privily.
So David’s men said to him, “
This is the day about which the LORD said to you, ‘Behold, I will deliver your enemy into your hand, that you may do with him as you wish.’” Then David
crept up secretly and cut off a corner of Saul’s
robe.
And he said unto his men, The LORD
forbid that I should do
this thing unto my master, the LORD’S
anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he is the
anointed of the LORD.
So he said to his men, “The LORD
forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD’s
anointed. May I never lift my hand against him, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.”
Behold,
this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and some
bade me kill thee: but mine eye
spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD’S
anointed.
Behold,
this day you have seen with your own eyes that the LORD delivered you into my hand in the cave. I was told to kill you, but I
spared you and said, ‘I will not lift my hand against my lord, since he is the LORD’s
anointed.’
And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is
this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and
wept.
When David had finished saying these things, Saul called back, “Is that your voice, David my son?” Then Saul
wept aloud And thou hast shewed
this day how that thou hast dealt well with me:
forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.
And you have shown this day how well you have dealt with me; for when the LORD delivered me into your hand, you did not kill me.
For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.
When a man finds his enemy, does he let him go away
unharmed? May the LORD reward you with good for what you have done for me
this day.
And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of
Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.
But Nabal asked them, “Who is David? Who is
this son of
Jesse? Many servants these days are breaking away from their masters.
Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that
this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that
pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good.
Now David had just finished saying, “In vain I have protected all that belonged to this man in the wilderness. Nothing that belongs to him has gone missing, yet he has paid me back evil for good.
And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let
this iniquity be: and let thine
handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine
audience, and hear the words of thine
handmaid.
She fell at his feet and said, “My lord, may the
blame be on me alone, but please let your servant speak to you; hear the words of your servant.
Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard
this man of
Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine
handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou
didst send.
My lord should pay no attention to
this scoundrel Nabal, for he lives up to his name: His name means
Fool, and folly accompanies him. I, your servant, did not see my lord’s young men whom you sent.
And now
this blessing which thine
handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord.
Now let this gift your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who follow you.
That
this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath
avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine
handmaid.
then my lord will have no
remorse or guilt of conscience over needless
bloodshed and
revenge. And when the LORD has dealt well with my lord, may you remember your
maidservant.”
And David said to
Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which sent thee
this day to meet me:
Then David said to
Abigail, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who sent you to meet me
this day!
And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me
this day from coming to shed blood, and from
avenging myself with mine own hand.
Then said
Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand
this day: now therefore let me
smite him, I pray thee, with the
spear even to the earth at once, and I will not
smite him the second time.
Abishai said to David, “
Today God has delivered your enemy into your hand. Now, therefore, please let me thrust the
spear through him into the ground with one stroke. I will not need to strike him twice!”
This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD’S
anointed. And now see where the king’s
spear is, and the
cruse of water that was at his
bolster.
This thing you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, all of you deserve to die, since you did not protect your lord, the LORD’s
anointed. Now look around. Where are the king’s
spear and water
jug that were by his head?”
And Saul knew David’s voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king.
Then Saul recognized David’s voice and asked, “Is that your voice, David my son?” “It is my voice, my lord and king,” David said.
Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have
stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men,
cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out
this day from
abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods.
Now please, may my lord the king hear the words of his servant: If the LORD has
stirred you up against me, then may He accept an offering. But if men have done it, may they be
cursed in the presence of the LORD! For
today they have driven me away from sharing in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’
Then said Saul, I have
sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee
harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes
this day: behold, I have played the
fool, and have
erred exceedingly.
Then Saul replied, “I have
sinned. Come back, David my son. I will never
harm you again, because
today you considered my life precious. I have played the
fool and have committed a grave error!”
And, behold, as thy life was much set by
this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the LORD, and let him deliver me out of all
tribulation.
As surely as I valued your life
today, so may the LORD value my life and
rescue me from all trouble.”
Then Achish gave him
Ziklag that day: wherefore
Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto
this day.
That day Achish gave him
Ziklag, and to
this day it still belongs to the kings of Judah.
And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring
tidings to
Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines.
David did not leave a man or woman alive to be brought to
Gath, for he said, “Otherwise they will report us, saying, ‘
This is what David did.’” And
this was David’s custom the whole time he lived in
Philistine territory.
Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had
lamented him, and buried him in
Ramah, even in his own city. And Saul had put away those that had familiar spirits, and the wizards, out of the land.
Now by
this time Samuel had died, and all Israel had
mourned for him and buried him in
Ramah, his own city. And Saul had removed the mediums and spiritists from the land.
And Saul
sware to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for
this thing.
Then Saul
swore to her by the LORD: “As surely as the LORD lives, no punishment shall come upon you for
this.”
Because thou obeyedst not the voice of the LORD, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.
Because you did not obey the LORD or carry out His burning anger against Amalek, the LORD has done
this to you
today.
Then said the princes of the Philistines, What do these Hebrews here? And Achish said unto the princes of the Philistines, Is not this David, the servant of Saul the king of Israel, which hath been with me these days, or these years, and I have found no fault in him since he fell unto me unto this day?
Then the commanders of the Philistines asked, “What about these Hebrews?” Achish replied, “Is
this not David, the servant of King Saul of Israel? He has been with me all these days, even years, and from the day he defected until
today I have found no fault in him.”
And the princes of the Philistines were
wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make
this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an
adversary to us: for
wherewith should he
reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?
But the commanders of the Philistines were
angry with Achish and told him, “Send that man back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He must not go down with us into battle only to become our
adversary during the war. What better way for him to regain the favor of his master than with the heads of our men?
Is not
this David, of whom they
sang one to another in dances, saying, Saul
slew his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
Is this not the David about whom they sing in their dances: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?”
Then Achish called David, and said unto him, Surely, as the LORD liveth, thou hast been upright, and thy going out and thy coming in with me in the host is good in my sight: for I have not found evil in thee since the day of thy coming unto me unto this day: nevertheless the lords favour thee not.
So Achish summoned David and told him, “As surely as the LORD lives, you have been upright in my sight, and it seems right that you should march in and out with me in the army, because I have found no fault in you from the day you came to me until this day. But you have no favor in the sight of the leaders.
And David said unto Achish, But what have I done? and what hast thou found in thy servant so long as I have been with thee unto this day, that I may not go fight against the enemies of my lord the king?
“But what have I done?” David replied. “What have you found against your servant, from the day I came to you until
today, to keep me from going along to fight against the enemies of my lord the king?”
And David enquired at the LORD, saying, Shall I pursue after
this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.
and David inquired of the LORD: “Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” the LORD replied, “for you will surely overtake them and
rescue the
captives.”
And David said to him, Canst thou bring me down to
this company? And he said,
Swear unto me by God, that thou
wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to
this company.
“Will you lead me to these raiders?” David asked. And the man replied, “
Swear to me by God that you will not kill me or deliver me into the hand of my master, and I will lead you to them.”
And David took all the flocks and the herds, which they
drave before those other cattle, and said,
This is David’s
spoil.
And he recovered all the flocks and herds, which his men drove
ahead of the other
livestock, calling out, “
This is David’s
plunder!”
Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.
But David said, “My brothers, you must not do this with what the LORD has given us. He has protected us and delivered into our hands the raiders who came against us.
For who will
hearken unto you in
this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike.
Who will
listen to your proposal? The share of the one who went to battle will
match the share of the one who stayed with the supplies. They will share alike.”
And it was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an
ordinance for Israel unto
this day.
And so it has been from that day forward. David established
this statute as an
ordinance for Israel to
this very day.
And it came to pass after
this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said,
Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto
Hebron.
Some time later, David inquired of the LORD, “Should I go up to one of the towns of Judah?” “Go up,” the LORD answered. Then David asked, “Where should I go?” “To
Hebron,” replied the LORD.
And David sent messengers unto the men of
Jabesh-
gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have shewed
this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him.
So David sent messengers to the men of
Jabesh-
gilead to tell them, “The LORD
bless you, because you showed
this kindness to Saul your lord when you buried him.
And now the LORD
shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you
this kindness, because ye have done
this thing.
Now may the LORD show you loving devotion and faithfulness, and I will also show you the same favor because you have done this.
And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in
Gibeon.
Then each man
grabbed his
opponent by the head and thrust his sword into his
opponent’s side, and they all fell together. So
this place, which is in
Gibeon, is called Helkath-hazzurim.
Then
Abner called to
Joab, and said, Shall the sword
devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then,
ere thou
bid the people return from following their brethren?
Then
Abner called out to
Joab: “Must the sword
devour forever? Do you not
realize that
this will only end in bitterness? How long before you tell the troops to stop pursuing their brothers?”
Then was
Abner very
wroth for the words of
Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog’s head, which against Judah do
shew kindness
this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning
this woman?
Abner was
furious over
Ish-bosheth’s
accusation. “Am I the head of a dog that belongs to Judah?” he asked. “All
this time I have been
loyal to the house of your father Saul, to his brothers, and to his friends. I have not delivered you into the hand of David, but now you
accuse me of
wrongdoing with
this woman!
And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of
Abner the son of
Ner:
Afterward, David heard about
this and said, “I and my kingdom are
forever guiltless before the LORD concerning the blood of
Abner son of
Ner.
And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel?
Then the king said to his servants, “Do you not
realize that a great prince has fallen
today in Israel?
And I am
this day weak, though
anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the
doer of evil according to his wickedness.
And I am weak
this day, though
anointed as king, and these men, the sons of Zeruiah, are too fierce for me. May the LORD repay the
evildoer according to his evil!”
And the Beerothites fled to Gittaim, and were sojourners there until this day.)
because the Beerothites fled to Gittaim and have lived there as foreigners to this day.
And they brought the head of
Ish-bosheth unto David to
Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of
Ish-bosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath
avenged my lord the king
this day of Saul, and of his seed.
They brought the head of
Ish-bosheth to David at
Hebron and said to the king, “Here is the head of
Ish-bosheth son of Saul, your enemy who sought your life.
Today the LORD has granted
vengeance to my lord the king against Saul and his offspring.”
But when the Philistines heard that they had
anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.
When the Philistines heard that David had been
anointed king over Israel, they all went in search of him; but David learned of
this and went down to the
stronghold.
And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the
mulberry trees, that then thou shalt
bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to
smite the host of the Philistines.
As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the
balsam trees, move quickly, because
this will mean that the LORD has marched out before you to strike the camp of the Philistines.”
And David was displeased, because the LORD had made a breach upon Uzzah: and he called the name of the place
Perez-uzzah to
this day.
Then David became
angry because the LORD had
burst forth against Uzzah; so he named that place
Perez-uzzah, as it is called to
this day.
And I will yet be more
vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight: and of the maidservants which thou hast spoken of, of them shall I be had in honour.
and I will
humiliate and humble myself even more than
this. Yet I will be honored by the maidservants of whom you have spoken.”
Go and tell my servant David, Thus saith the LORD, Shalt thou build me an house for me to dwell in?
“Go and tell My servant David that this is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build for Me a house to dwell in?
Whereas I have not dwelt in any house since the time that I brought up the children of Israel out of Egypt, even to this day, but have walked in a tent and in a tabernacle.
For I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt until this day, but I have moved about with a tent as My dwelling.
Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the
sheepcote, from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel:
Now then, you are to tell My servant David that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I took you from the pasture, from following the flock, to be the ruler over My people Israel.
According to all these words, and according to all
this vision, so did
Nathan speak unto David.
So
Nathan relayed to David all the words of
this entire vision.
Then went king David in, and sat before the LORD, and he said, Who am I, O Lord GOD? and what is my house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?
Then King David went in, sat before the LORD, and said, “Who am I, O Lord GOD, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
And this was yet a small thing in thy sight, O Lord GOD; but thou hast spoken also of thy servant’s house for a great while to come. And is this the manner of man, O Lord GOD?
And as if this was a small thing in Your eyes, O Lord GOD, You have also spoken about the future of the house of Your servant. Is this Your custom with man, O Lord GOD?
For thy word’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all these great things, to make thy servant know them.
For the sake of Your word and according to Your own heart, You have accomplished this great thing and revealed it to Your servant.
For thou, O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, hast revealed to thy servant, saying, I will build thee an house: therefore hath thy servant found in his heart to pray this prayer unto thee.
For You, O LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant when You said, ‘I will build a house for you.’ Therefore Your servant has found the courage to offer this prayer to You.
And now, O Lord GOD, thou art that God, and thy words be true, and thou hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:
And now, O Lord GOD, You are God! Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant.
And after
this it came to pass, that David
smote the Philistines, and subdued them: and David took Metheg-ammah out of the hand of the Philistines.
Some time later, David defeated the Philistines, subdued them, and took Metheg-ammah from the hand of the Philistines.
And it came to pass after
this, that the king of the children of
Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his
stead.
Some time later, the king of the
Ammonites died and was succeeded by his son Hanun.
When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly
ashamed: and the king said,
Tarry at
Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
When
this was reported to David, he sent messengers to meet the men, since they had been thoroughly
humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in
Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.”
And when David heard of it, he sent
Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.
On hearing
this, David sent
Joab and the entire army of mighty men.
And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in
array against David, and fought with him.
When
this was reported to David, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan, and went to Helam. Then the Arameans
arrayed themselves against David and fought against him.
And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not
this Bath-
sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?
So David sent and inquired about the woman, and he was told, “This is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”
And David sent to
Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And
Joab sent Uriah to David.
At
this, David sent orders to
Joab: “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So
Joab sent him to David.
And Uriah said unto David, The ark, and Israel, and Judah,
abide in tents; and my lord
Joab, and the servants of my lord, are
encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into mine house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? as thou livest, and as thy soul liveth, I will not do
this thing.
Uriah answered, “The ark and Israel and Judah are dwelling in tents, and my master
Joab and his soldiers are camped in the open field. How can I go to my house to eat and drink and sleep with my wife? As surely as you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing!”
Then David said unto the
messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto
Joab, Let not
this thing displease thee, for the sword devoureth one as well as another: make thy battle more strong against the city, and overthrow it: and
encourage thou him.
And David’s anger was greatly
kindled against the man; and he said to
Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done
this thing shall surely die:
David burned with anger against the man and said to
Nathan: “As surely as the LORD lives, the man who did
this deserves to die!
And he shall restore the lamb
fourfold, because he did
this thing, and because he had no
pity.
Because he has done
this thing and has shown no
pity, he must pay for the lamb four times over.”
And
Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I
anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;
Then
Nathan said to David, “You are that man!
This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I
anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.
This is what the LORD says: ‘I will raise up
adversity against you from your own house. Before your very eyes I will take your wives and give them to another, and he will lie with them in broad
daylight.
For thou
didst it secretly: but I will do
this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.
You have acted in secret, but I will do
this thing in broad
daylight before all Israel.’”
Howbeit, because by
this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to
blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.
Nevertheless, because by this deed you have shown utter contempt for the word of the LORD, the son born to you will surely die.”
Then said his servants unto him, What thing is
this that thou hast done? thou
didst fast and
weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou
didst rise and eat bread.
“What is
this you have done?” his servants asked. “While the child was alive, you fasted and
wept, but when he died, you got up and
ate.”
And it came to pass after
this, that
Absalom the son of David had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of David loved her.
After some time, David’s son Amnon fell in love with Tamar, the beautiful sister of David’s son
Absalom.
And she answered him,
Nay, my brother, do not force me; for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou
this folly.
“No, my brother!” she
cried. “Do not
humiliate me, for such a thing should never be done in Israel. Do not do
this disgraceful thing!
And she said unto him, There is no cause:
this evil in sending me away is greater than the other that thou
didst unto me. But he would not
hearken unto her.
“No,” she replied, “sending me away is worse than
this great wrong you have already done to me!” But he refused to
listen to her.
Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, Put now
this woman out from me, and
bolt the door after her.
Instead, he called to his
attendant and said, “Throw
this woman out and
bolt the door behind her!”
And she had a garment of
divers colours upon her: for with such robes were the king’s daughters that were virgins
apparelled. Then his servant brought her out, and
bolted the door after her.
So Amnon’s
attendant threw her out and
bolted the door behind her. Now Tamar was wearing a
robe of many colors, because
this is what the king’s virgin daughters
wore.
