And
Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard not
this thing. So Tamar remained
desolate in her brother
Absalom’s house.
Her brother
Absalom said to her, “Has your brother Amnon been with you? Be quiet for now, my sister. He is your brother. Do not take
this thing to heart.” So Tamar lived as a
desolate woman in the house of her brother
Absalom.
But when king David heard of all these things, he was very
wroth.
When King David heard all
this, he was
furious.
And Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David’s brother, answered and said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the king’s sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the appointment of
Absalom this hath been determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar.
But Jonadab, the son of David’s brother Shimeah, spoke up: “My lord must not think they have killed all the sons of the king, for only Amnon is dead. In fact,
Absalom has
planned this since the day Amnon
violated his sister Tamar.
And come to the king, and speak on
this manner unto him. So
Joab put the words in her mouth.
Then go to the king and speak these words to him.” And
Joab put the words in her mouth.
And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king
doth speak
this thing as one which is
faulty, in that the king
doth not
fetch home again his banished.
The woman asked, “Why have you devised a thing like
this against the people of God? When the king says
this, does he not
convict himself, since he has not brought back his own banished son?
Now therefore that I am come to speak of
this thing unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy
handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his
handmaid.
Now therefore, I have come to present
this matter to my lord the king because the people have made me afraid. Your servant thought, ‘I will speak to the king. Perhaps he will grant the request of his
maidservant.
And the king said, Is not the hand of
Joab with thee in all
this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left from ought that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant
Joab, he
bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of thine
handmaid:
So the king asked, “Is the hand of
Joab behind all
this?” The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, no one can turn to the right or to the left from anything that my lord the king says.
Yes, your servant
Joab is the one who gave me orders; he told your
maidservant exactly what to say.
To
fetch about
this form of speech hath thy servant
Joab done
this thing: and my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth.
Joab your servant has done
this to bring about
this change of affairs, but my lord has wisdom like the wisdom of the angel of God, to know everything that happens in the land.”
And the king said unto
Joab, Behold now, I have done
this thing: go therefore, bring the young man
Absalom again.
Then the king said to
Joab, “I
hereby grant
this request. Go, bring back the young man
Absalom.”
And it came to pass after
this, that
Absalom prepared him
chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.
Some time later,
Absalom provided for himself a
chariot with horses and fifty men to run
ahead of him.
And on
this manner did
Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so
Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
Absalom did
this to all the Israelites who came to the king for justice. In
this way he
stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
Then
Absalom sent
spies throughout the tribes of Israel with
this message: “When you hear the sound of the horn, you are to say, ‘
Absalom reigns in
Hebron!’”
Whereas thou camest but
yesterday, should I
this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go
whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
In fact, you arrived only
yesterday; should I make you
wander around with us
today while I do not know where I am going? Go back and take your brothers with you. May the LORD show you loving devotion and faithfulness.”
Then said
Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should
this dead dog
curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head.
Then
Abishai son of Zeruiah said to the king, “Why should
this dead dog
curse my lord the king? Let me go over and cut off his head!”
And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? so let him
curse, because the LORD hath said unto him,
Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so?
But the king replied, “What have I to do with you, O sons of Zeruiah? If he curses me because the LORD told him, ‘
Curse David,’ who can ask, ‘Why did you do
this?’”
And David said to
Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, which came forth of my
bowels, seeketh my life: how much more now may
this Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him
curse; for the LORD hath
bidden him.
Then David said to
Abishai and to all his servants, “Behold, my own son, my own flesh and blood, seeks my life. How much more, then,
this Benjamite! Leave him alone and let him
curse me, for the LORD has told him so.
It may be that the LORD will look on mine
affliction, and that the LORD will requite me good for his
cursing this day.
And
Absalom said to Hushai, Is
this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not with thy friend?
“Is
this the
loyalty you show your friend?”
Absalom replied. “Why did you not go with your friend?”
And Hushai said unto
Absalom,
Nay; but whom the LORD, and
this people, and all the men of Israel, choose, his will I be, and with him will I
abide.
“Not at all,” Hushai answered. “For the one chosen by the LORD, by the people, and by all the men of Israel—his I will be, and with him I will remain.
Moreover
Ahithophel said unto
Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David
this night:
And the saying pleased
Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.
This proposal seemed good to
Absalom and all the elders of Israel.
And when Hushai was come to
Absalom,
Absalom spake unto him, saying,
Ahithophel hath spoken after
this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not; speak thou.
So Hushai came to
Absalom, who told him, “
Ahithophel has spoken
this proposal. Should we carry it out? If not, what do you say?”
And Hushai said unto
Absalom, The counsel that
Ahithophel hath given is not good at
this time.
Hushai replied, “
This time the advice of
Ahithophel is not sound.”
Now therefore send quickly, and tell David, saying,
Lodge not
this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass over; lest the king be
swallowed up, and all the people that are with him.
Now send quickly and tell David, ‘Do not
spend the night at the fords of the wilderness, but be sure to cross over. Otherwise the king and all the people with him will be
swallowed up.’”
And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath
Ahithophel counselled against you.
After the men had gone,
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan climbed up out of the well and went to inform King David, saying, “Get up and cross over the river at once, for
Ahithophel has given
this advice against you.”
And a certain man saw it, and told
Joab, and said, Behold, I saw
Absalom hanged in an oak.
When one of the men saw
this, he told
Joab, “I just saw
Absalom hanging in an oak tree!”
Then said
Joab, I may not
tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of
Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
But
Joab declared, “I am not going to wait like
this with you!” And he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through the heart of
Absalom while he was still alive in the oak tree.
Now
Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself a
pillar, which is in the king’s
dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in
remembrance: and he called the
pillar after his own name: and it is called unto
this day,
Absalom’s place.
During his lifetime,
Absalom had set up for himself a
pillar in the King’s Valley, for he had said, “I have no son to preserve the memory of my name.” So he gave the
pillar his name, and to
this day it is called
Absalom’s Monument.
And
Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not bear
tidings this day, but thou shalt bear
tidings another day: but
this day thou shalt bear no
tidings, because the king’s son is dead.
But
Joab replied, “You are not the man to take good news
today. You may do it another day, but you must not do so
today, because the king’s son is dead.”
And the
watchman saw another man running: and the
watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold another man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth
tidings.
the
watchman saw another man running, and he called out to the gatekeeper, “Look! Another man is running alone!” “
This one also brings good news,” said the king.
And the
watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of
Ahimaaz the son of
Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good
tidings.
The
watchman said, “The first man appears to me to be running like
Ahimaaz son of
Zadok.” “
This is a good man,” said the king. “He comes with good news.”
And, behold, Cushi came; and Cushi said,
Tidings, my lord the king: for the LORD hath
avenged thee
this day of all them that rose up against thee.
Just then the
Cushite came and said, “May my lord the king hear the good news:
Today the LORD has
avenged you of all who rose up against you!”
And
Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast shamed
this day the faces of all thy servants, which
this day have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy concubines;
Then
Joab went into the house and said to the king, “
Today you have disgraced all your servants who have saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters, of your wives, and of your concubines.
In that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy friends. For thou hast declared
this day, that thou regardest neither princes nor servants: for
this day I perceive, that if
Absalom had lived, and all we had died
this day, then it had pleased thee well.
You love those who
hate you and
hate those who love you! For you have made it clear
today that the commanders and soldiers mean nothing to you. I know
today that if
Absalom were alive and all of us were dead, it would have pleased you!
Now therefore arise, go forth, and speak
comfortably unto thy servants: for I
swear by the LORD, if thou go not forth, there will not
tarry one with thee
this night: and that will be worse unto thee than all the evil that
befell thee from thy youth until now.
Now therefore get up! Go out and speak comfort to your servants, for I
swear by the LORD that if you do not go out, not a man will remain with you
tonight.
This will be worse for you than all the
adversity that has
befallen you from your youth until now!”
And king David sent to
Zadok and to
Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house.
Then King David sent
this message to
Zadok and
Abiathar, the priests: “Say to the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to restore the king to his palace, since the talk of all Israel has reached the king at his quarters?
And say ye to
Amasa, Art thou not of my bone, and of my flesh? God do so to me, and more also, if thou be not captain of the host before me continually in the room of
Joab.
And say to
Amasa, ‘Aren’t you my flesh and blood? May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if from
this time you are not the commander of my army in place of
Joab!’”
And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word unto the king, Return thou, and all thy servants.
So he
swayed the hearts of all the men of Judah as though they were one man, and they sent word to the king: “Return, you and all your servants.”
For thy servant
doth know that I have
sinned: therefore, behold, I am come the first
this day of all the house of Joseph to go down to meet my lord the king.
For your servant knows that I have
sinned, so here I am
today as the first of all the house of Joseph to come down to meet my lord the king.”
But
Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for
this, because he
cursed the LORD’S
anointed?
But
Abishai son of Zeruiah said, “Shouldn’t Shimei be put to death for
this, because he
cursed the LORD’s
anointed?”
And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should
this day be
adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death
this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am
this day king over Israel?
And David replied, “Sons of Zeruiah, what have I to do with you, that you should be my
adversaries today? Should any man be put to death in Israel
today? Am I not indeed aware that
today I am king over Israel?”
I am
this day
fourscore years old: and can I
discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?
I am now eighty years old. Can I
discern what is good and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats or drinks? Can I still hear the voice of singing men and women? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king?
And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of
kin to us: wherefore then be ye
angry for
this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift?
And all the men of Judah replied to the men of Israel, “We did this because the king is our relative. Why does this anger you? Have we ever eaten at the king’s expense or received anything for ourselves?”
And the king called the Gibeonites, and said unto them; (now the Gibeonites were not of the children of Israel, but of the
remnant of the
Amorites; and the children of Israel had
sworn unto them: and Saul sought to
slay them in his zeal to the children of Israel and Judah.)
At
this, David summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not Israelites, but a
remnant of the
Amorites. The Israelites had taken an oath concerning them, but in his zeal for Israel and Judah, Saul had sought to kill them.)
And it came to pass after
this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at
Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite
slew Saph, which was of the sons of the
giant.
Some time later at
Gob, there was another battle with the Philistines. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph, one of the descendants of Rapha.
And David spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD had delivered him out of the hand of all his enemies, and out of the hand of Saul:
And David
sang this song to the LORD on the day the LORD had delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul.
Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an
everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for
this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow.
Is not my house right with God? For He has established with me an
everlasting covenant, ordered and secured in every part. Will He not bring about my full salvation and my every desire?
And he said, Be it far from me, O LORD, that I should do
this: is not
this the blood of the men that went in
jeopardy of their lives? therefore he would not drink it. These things did these three mighty men.
saying, “Far be it from me, O LORD, to do this! Is this not the blood of the men who risked their lives?” So he refused to drink it. Such were the exploits of the three mighty men.
And
Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many
soever they be, an
hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why
doth my lord the king delight in
this thing?
But
Joab replied to the king, “May the LORD your God multiply the troops a hundred times over, and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”
Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.
“Go and tell David that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am offering you three options. Choose one of them, and I will carry it out against you.’”
And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a very goodly man; and his mother bare him after
Absalom.
(His father had never once
reprimanded him by saying, “Why do you act
this way?” Adonijah was also very handsome, born next after
Absalom.)
For he is gone down
this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and
Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
For
today he has gone down and sacrificed an abundance of oxen,
fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the sons of the king, the commanders of the army, and
Abiathar the priest. And behold, they are eating and drinking before him, saying, ‘Long live King Adonijah!’
Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?
Has my lord the king let this happen without informing your servant who should sit on the throne after my lord the king?”
Even as I
sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying,
Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my
stead; even so will I certainly do
this day.
I will carry out
this very day exactly what I
swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel: Surely your son Solomon will reign after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place.”
And Adonijah and all the guests that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. And when
Joab heard the sound of the
trumpet, he said, Wherefore is
this noise of the city being in an
uproar?
Now Adonijah and all his guests were finishing their feast when they heard the sound of the ram’s horn. “Why is the city in such a loud
uproar?” asked
Joab.
And
Zadok the priest and
Nathan the prophet have
anointed him king in
Gihon: and they are come up from thence
rejoicing, so that the city
rang again.
This is the noise that ye have heard.
Zadok the priest and
Nathan the prophet have
anointed him king at
Gihon, and they have gone up from there with
rejoicing that rings out in the city. That is the noise you hear.
And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing it.
saying, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel!
Today He has provided one to sit on my throne, and my eyes have seen it.’”
And all the guests that were with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
At this, all the guests of Adonijah arose in terror and scattered.
Then king Solomon
sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken
this word against his own life.
Then King Solomon
swore by the LORD: “May God
punish me, and ever so severely, if Adonijah has not made
this request at the expense of his life.
Now therefore, as the LORD liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.
And now, as surely as the LORD lives—the One who established me, who set me on the throne of my father David, and who founded for me a dynasty as He promised—surely Adonijah shall be put to death
today!”
And unto
Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at
this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been
afflicted in all wherein my father was
afflicted.
Then the king said to
Abiathar the priest, “Go back to your fields in Anathoth. Even though you deserve to die, I will not put you to death at
this time, since you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and you suffered through all that my father suffered.”
And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said,
Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said
Joab, and thus he answered me.
And Benaiah entered the tent of the LORD and said to
Joab, “The king says, ‘Come out!’” But
Joab replied, “No, I will die here.” So Benaiah relayed the message to the king, saying, “
This is how
Joab answered me.”
And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day.
Solomon replied, “You have shown much loving devotion to Your servant, my father David, because he walked before You in faithfulness, righteousness, and uprightness of heart. And You have maintained this loving devotion by giving him a son to sit on his throne this very day.
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may
discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge
this thy so great a people?
Therefore give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people and to
discern between good and evil. For who is able to
govern this great people of Yours?”
And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
Now it pleased the Lord that Solomon had made this request.
And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked
this thing, and hast not asked for
thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for
thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for
thyself understanding to
discern judgment;
So God said to him, “Since you have asked for
this instead of requesting long life or wealth for
yourself or death for your enemies—but you have asked for
discernment to
administer justice—
And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
One woman said, “Please, my lord, this woman and I live in the same house, and I gave birth while she was in the house.
And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.
On the third day after I gave birth,
this woman also had a
baby. We were alone, with no one in the house but the two of us.
And this woman’s child died in the night; because she overlaid it.
During the night this woman’s son died because she rolled over on him.
And the other woman said,
Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And
this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.
“No,” said the other woman, “the living one is my son and the dead one is your son.” But the first woman insisted, “No, the dead one is yours and the living one is mine.” So they
argued before the king.
Then said the king, The one saith,
This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith,
Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.
Then the king replied, “This woman says, ‘My son is alive and yours is dead,’ but that woman says, ‘No, your son is dead and mine is alive.’”
For he had dominion over all the region on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him.
For Solomon had dominion over everything west of the Euphrates—over all the kingdoms from Tiphsah to
Gaza—and he had peace on all sides.
And Solomon sent to
Hiram, saying,
And Solomon relayed
this message to
Hiram:
And it came to pass, when
Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he
rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the LORD
this day, which hath given unto David a wise son over
this great people.
When
Hiram received Solomon’s message, he
rejoiced greatly and said, “Blessed be the LORD
this day! He has given David a wise son over
this great people!”
Concerning
this house which thou art in building, if thou
wilt walk in my statutes, and
execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father:
“As for
this temple you are building, if you walk in My statutes, carry out My ordinances, and keep all My commandments by walking in them, I will
fulfill through you the promise I made to your father David.
And the house, that is, the temple before it, was forty cubits long.
And the main hall in front of this room was forty cubits long.
And his house where he dwelt had another court within the
porch, which was of the like work. Solomon made also an house for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had taken to wife, like unto
this porch.
And the palace where Solomon would live, set further back, was of similar construction. He also made a palace like this hall for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had married.
And the work of the bases was on this manner: they had borders, and the borders were between the ledges:
This was the design of the stands: They had side panels attached to uprights,
After this manner he made the ten bases: all of them had one casting, one measure, and one size.
In this way he made the ten stands, each with the same casting, dimensions, and shape.
And they drew out the
staves, that the ends of the
staves were seen out in the holy place before the
oracle, and they were not seen without: and there they are unto
this day.
The poles extended far enough that their ends were visible from the Holy Place in front of the inner sanctuary, but not from outside the Holy Place; and they are there to this day.
And the LORD said unto David my father, Whereas it was in thine heart to build an house unto my name, thou
didst well that it was in thine heart.
But the LORD said to my father David, ‘Since it was in your heart to build a house for My Name, you have done well to have this in your heart.
Who hast kept with thy servant David my father that thou promisedst him: thou spakest also with thy mouth, and hast fulfilled it with thine hand, as it is this day.
You have kept Your promise to Your servant, my father David. What You spoke with Your mouth You have fulfilled with Your hand this day.
But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?
But will God indeed dwell upon the earth? Even heaven, the highest heaven, cannot contain You, much less this temple I have built.
That thine eyes may be open toward
this house night and day, even toward the place of which thou hast said, My name shall be there: that thou mayest
hearken unto the prayer which thy servant shall make toward
this place.
May Your eyes be open toward this temple night and day, toward the place of which You said, ‘My Name shall be there,’ so that You may hear the prayer that Your servant prays toward this place.
And
hearken thou to the
supplication of thy servant, and of thy people Israel, when they shall pray toward
this place: and hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place: and when thou hearest,
forgive.
Hear the
plea of Your servant and of Your people Israel when they pray toward
this place. May You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place. May You hear and
forgive.
If any man
trespass against his neighbour, and an oath be laid upon him to cause him to
swear, and the oath come before thine altar in
this house:
When a man sins against his
neighbor and is required to take an oath, and he comes to take an oath before Your altar in
this temple,
When thy people Israel be
smitten down before the enemy, because they have
sinned against thee, and shall turn again to thee, and
confess thy name, and pray, and make
supplication unto thee in
this house:
When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have
sinned against You, and they return to You and
confess Your name, praying and
pleading with You in
this temple,
When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have
sinned against thee; if they pray toward
this place, and
confess thy name, and turn from their sin, when thou afflictest them:
When the
skies are shut and there is no rain because Your people have
sinned against You, and they pray toward
this place and
confess Your name, and they turn from their sins because You have
afflicted them,
What prayer and
supplication soever be made by any man, or by all thy people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward
this house:
then may whatever prayer or petition Your people Israel make—each knowing his own afflictions and spreading out his hands toward this temple—
(For they shall hear of thy great name, and of thy strong hand, and of thy stretched out arm;) when he shall come and pray toward this house;
for they will hear of Your great name and mighty hand and outstretched arm—when he comes and prays toward this temple,
Hear thou in heaven thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for: that all people of the earth may know thy name, to fear thee, as do thy people Israel; and that they may know that this house, which I have builded, is called by thy name.
then may You hear from heaven, Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You. Then all the peoples of the earth will know Your name and fear You, as do Your people Israel, and they will know that this house I have built is called by Your Name.
And it was so, that when Solomon had made an end of praying all
this prayer and
supplication unto the LORD, he arose from before the altar of the LORD, from
kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven.
Now when Solomon had finished praying
this entire prayer and petition to the LORD, he got up before the altar of the LORD, where he had been
kneeling with his hands spread out toward heaven.
Let your heart therefore be perfect with the LORD our God, to walk in his statutes, and to keep his commandments, as at this day.
So let your heart be fully devoted to the LORD our God, as it is this day, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments.”
And the LORD said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy
supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have
hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.
And the LORD said to him: “I have heard your prayer and petition before Me. I have consecrated
this temple you have built by putting My Name there
forever; My eyes and My heart will be there for all time.
Then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and
this house, which I have
hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a
proverb and a
byword among all people:
then I will cut off Israel from the land that I have given them, and I will
banish from My presence
this temple I have
sanctified for My Name. Then Israel will become an object of
scorn and
ridicule among all peoples.
And at
this house, which is high, every one that passeth by it shall be
astonished, and shall hiss; and they shall say, Why hath the LORD done thus unto
this land, and to
this house?
And when
this temple has become a
heap of
rubble, all who pass by it will be
appalled and will hiss and say, ‘Why has the LORD done such a thing to
this land and to
this temple?’
And they shall answer, Because they
forsook the LORD their God, who brought forth their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have taken hold upon other gods, and have worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath the LORD brought upon them all
this evil.
And others will answer, ‘Because they have
forsaken the LORD their God who brought their fathers out of the land of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—because of
this, the LORD has brought all
this disaster upon them.’”
And he said, What cities are these which thou hast given me, my brother? And he called them the land of
Cabul unto
this day.
“What are these towns you have given me, my brother?” asked
Hiram, and he called them the Land of
Cabul, as they are called to
this day.
And
this is the reason of the
levy which king Solomon raised; for to build the house of the LORD, and his own house, and
Millo, and the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, and
Megiddo, and
Gezer.
This is the account of the forced labor that King Solomon imposed to build the house of the LORD, his own palace, the supporting terraces, and the wall of Jerusalem, as well as Hazor,
Megiddo, and
Gezer.
