Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
For this reason they were unable to believe. For again, Isaiah says:
Now before the feast of the
passover, when Jesus knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of
this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end.
It was now just before the
Passover Feast, and Jesus knew that His hour had come to leave
this world and return to the Father. Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the very end.
I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his
heel against me.
I am not speaking about all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But
this is to
fulfill the Scripture: ‘The one who shares My bread has lifted up his
heel against Me.’
When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and
testified, and said,
Verily,
verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall
betray me.
After Jesus had said
this, He became troubled in spirit and
testified, “Truly, truly, I tell you, one of you will
betray Me.”
Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a
sop, when I have
dipped it. And when he had
dipped the
sop, he gave it to
Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spake this unto him.
But no one at the table knew why Jesus had said this to him.
By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
By
this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.”
Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then,
Shew us the Father?
Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with you all
this time, and still you do not know Me?
Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
All this I have spoken to you while I am still with you.
Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of
this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming, and he has no claim on Me.
Herein is my Father
glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, proving
yourselves to be My disciples.
This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.
This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
These things I command you, that ye love one another.
This is My command to you: Love one another.
But all these things will they do unto you for my name’s sake, because they know not him that sent me.
But they will treat you like this because of My name, since they do not know the One who sent Me.
But
this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They
hated me without a cause.
But
this is to
fulfill what is written in their Law: ‘They
hated Me without reason.’
Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.
Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
Then some of His disciples asked one another, “Why is He telling us, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?”
They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
They kept asking, “Why is He saying, ‘a little while’? We do not understand what He is saying.”
These things have I spoken unto you in
proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in
proverbs, but I shall
shew you plainly of the Father.
I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
Now we understand that You know all things and that You have no need for
anyone to question You. Because of
this, we believe that You came from God.”
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
Now this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.
That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none.
This was to
fulfill the word He had spoken: “I have not lost one of those You have given Me.”
Then saith the
damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not thou also one of
this man’s disciples? He saith, I am not.
At
this, the servant
girl watching the door said to Peter, “Aren’t you also one of
this man’s disciples?” “I am not,” he answered.
And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
When Jesus had said
this, one of the officers standing nearby
slapped Him in the face and said, “Is
this how You answer the high priest?”
Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What
accusation bring ye against
this man?
So
Pilate went out to them and asked, “What
accusation are you bringing against
this man?”
That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake,
signifying what death he should die.
This was to
fulfill the word that Jesus had spoken to indicate the kind of death He was going to die.
Jesus answered him, Sayest thou
this thing of
thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?
“Are you saying this on your own,” Jesus asked, “or did others tell you about Me?”
Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world; if it were, My servants would fight to prevent My arrest by the Jews. But now My kingdom is not of this realm.”
Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To
this end was I born, and for
this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
“Then You are a king!”
Pilate said. “You say that I am a king,” Jesus answered. “For
this reason I was born and have come into the world, to
testify to the truth.
Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to My voice.”
Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said
this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.
“What is truth?”
Pilate asked. And having said
this, he went out again to the Jews and told them, “I find no basis for a charge against Him.
Then
cried they all again, saying, Not
this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a
robber.
When
Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
When
Pilate heard
this statement, he was even more afraid,
And from
thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews
cried out, saying, If thou let
this man go, thou art not Caesar’s friend:
whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
From then on,
Pilate tried to release Him, but the Jews kept
shouting, “If you release
this man, you are no friend of Caesar.
Anyone who declares himself a king is
defying Caesar.”
But they
cried out, Away with him, away with him,
crucify him.
Pilate saith unto them, Shall I
crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
At
this, they
shouted, “Away with Him! Away with Him!
Crucify Him!” “Shall I
crucify your King?”
Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” replied the chief priests.
This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was
crucified was
nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
Many of the Jews read
this sign, because the place where Jesus was
crucified was near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
They said therefore among themselves, Let us not
rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my
raiment among them, and for my
vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
So they said to one another, “Let us not
tear it. Instead, let us cast lots to see who will get it.”
This was to
fulfill the Scripture: “They divided My garments among them, and cast lots for My clothing.” So that is what the soldiers did.
Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
Then He said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” So from that hour, this disciple took her into his home.
After
this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I
thirst.
After
this, knowing that everything had now been accomplished, and to
fulfill the Scripture, Jesus said, “I am
thirsty.”
And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
The one who saw it has
testified to
this, and his testimony is true. He knows that he is telling the truth, so that you also may believe.
And after
this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews,
besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and
Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.
Afterward, Joseph of
Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus (but secretly for fear of the Jews), asked
Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus.
Pilate gave him permission, so he came and removed His body.
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.
When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there; but she did not recognize that it was Jesus.
And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples
glad, when they saw the Lord.
After He had said
this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples
rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
When He had said this, He breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book.
After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of
Tiberias; and on
this wise shewed he himself.
Later, by the Sea of
Tiberias, Jesus again revealed Himself to the disciples. He made Himself known in
this way:
This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.
This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after He was raised from the dead.
This spake he,
signifying by what death he should
glorify God. And when he had spoken
this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
Jesus said
this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would
glorify God. And after He had said
this, He told him, “Follow Me.”
Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?
When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?”
Then went
this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he
tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
Because of
this, the
rumor spread among the brothers that
this disciple would not die. However, Jesus did not say that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I return, what is that to you?”
This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who has written them down. And we know that his testimony is true.
When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord,
wilt thou at
this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
So when they came together, they asked Him, “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”
And when he had spoken these things, while they
beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
After He had said
this, they watched as He was taken up, and a cloud
hid Him from their sight.
Which also said, Ye men of
Galilee, why stand ye
gazing up into heaven?
this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
“Men of
Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky?
This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”
Men and brethren,
this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning
Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
“Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit
foretold through the mouth of David concerning
Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus.
For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.
He was one of our number and shared in this ministry.”
(Now with the reward for his wickedness
Judas bought a field; there he fell
headlong and
burst open in the middle, and all his intestines
spilled out.
And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem;
insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue,
Aceldama, that is to say, The field of blood.
This became known to all who lived in Jerusalem, so they called that field in their own language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)
to take up
this ministry and
apostleship, which
Judas abandoned to go to his rightful place.”
Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
And when
this sound
rang out, a crowd came together in
bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking his own language.
And they were all
amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth
this?
But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be
this known unto you, and
hearken to my words:
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, lifted up his voice, and addressed the crowd: “Men of
Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let
this be known to you, and
listen carefully to my words.
But
this is that which was spoken by the prophet
Joel;
No,
this is what was spoken by the prophet
Joel:
Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of
Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye
yourselves also know:
Men of Israel,
listen to
this message: Jesus of
Nazareth was a man
certified by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs, which God did among you through Him, as you
yourselves know.
Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his
sepulchre is with us unto
this day.
Brothers, I can tell you with confidence that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.
He seeing
this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in
hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
Foreseeing this, David spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did His body see decay.
This Jesus hath God raised up,
whereof we all are witnesses.
God has raised this Jesus to life, to which we are all witnesses.
Therefore being by the right hand of God
exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth
this, which ye now see and hear.
Exalted, then, to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.
Therefore let all the house of Israel know
assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have
crucified, both Lord and Christ.
Therefore let all Israel know with certainty that God has made
this Jesus, whom you
crucified, both Lord and Christ!”
Now when they heard
this, they were
pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?
When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are
afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
This promise belongs to you and your children and to all who are far off—to all whom the Lord our God will call to Himself.”
With many other words he
testified, and he urged them, “Be saved from
this corrupt generation.”
And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why
marvel ye at
this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or
holiness we had made
this man to walk?
And when Peter saw
this, he addressed the people: “Men of Israel, why are you surprised by
this? Why do you
stare at us as if by our own power or
godliness we had made
this man walk?
And his name through faith in his name hath made
this man strong, whom ye see and know:
yea, the faith which is by him hath given him
this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
By faith in the name of Jesus,
this man whom you see and know has been made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through Him that has given him
this complete
healing in your presence.
But those things, which God before had shewed by the mouth of all his prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled.
But in
this way God has fulfilled what He
foretold through all the prophets, saying that His Christ would suffer.
And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?
They had Peter and John brought in and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
If we
this day be examined of the good deed done to the
impotent man, by what means he is made whole;
If we are being examined
today about a kind service to a man who was
lame, to determine how he was
healed,
Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of
Nazareth, whom ye
crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him
doth this man stand here before you whole.
then let
this be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of
Nazareth, whom you
crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that
this man stands before you
healed.
This is the stone which was set at
nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.
This Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’
But that it spread no further among the people, let us straitly
threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in
this name.
But to keep
this message from spreading any further among the people, we must
warn them not to speak to
anyone in
this name.”
For the man was above forty years old, on whom
this miracle of
healing was shewed.
And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one
accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
When the believers heard
this, they lifted up their voices to God with one
accord. “Sovereign Lord,” they said, “You made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them.
For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast
anointed, both Herod, and Pontius
Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
In fact,
this is the very city where Herod and Pontius
Pilate conspired with the Gentiles and the people of Israel against Your holy servant Jesus, whom You
anointed.
Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived
this thing in thine heart? thou hast not
lied unto men, but unto God.
Did it not belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, was it not at your
disposal? How could you conceive such a deed in your heart? You have not
lied to men, but to God!”
And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said,
Yea, for so much.
“Tell me,” said Peter, “is
this the price you and your husband got for the land?” “
Yes,” she answered, “that is the price.”
Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.
“Go, stand in the temple courts and tell the people the full message of this new life.”
Now when the high priest and the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these things, they doubted of them
whereunto this would grow.
When the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard
this account, they were
perplexed as to what was happening.
Saying, Did not we straitly command you that ye should not teach in this name? and, behold, ye have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.
“We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,” he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us responsible for this man’s blood.”
When they heard that, they were cut to the heart, and took counsel to
slay them.
When the Council members heard
this, they were
enraged, and they resolved to put the apostles to death.
After
this man rose up
Judas of
Galilee in the days of the taxing, and drew away much people after him: he also perished; and all, even as many as obeyed him, were
dispersed.
After him,
Judas the
Galilean appeared in the days of the census and drew away people after him. He too perished, and all his followers were scattered.
And now I say unto you,
Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if
this counsel or
this work be of men, it will come to
nought:
So in the present case I
advise you: Leave these men alone. Let them go! For if their purpose or
endeavor is of human origin, it will fail.
And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
At
this, they yielded to
Gamaliel. They called the apostles in and had them
flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and released them.
Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of
honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may
appoint over
this business.
Therefore, brothers, select from among you seven men confirmed to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will
appoint this responsibility to them
And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and
Timon, and Parmenas, and
Nicolas a
proselyte of Antioch:
This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, as well as Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor,
Timon, Parmenas, and
Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to
Judaism.
And set up false witnesses, which said,
This man ceaseth not to speak
blasphemous words against
this holy place, and the law:
where they presented false witnesses who said, “This man never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law.
For we have heard him say, that
this Jesus of
Nazareth shall destroy
this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.
For we have heard him say that Jesus of
Nazareth will destroy
this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.”
Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.
So Abraham left the land of the Chaldeans and settled in
Haran. After his father died, God brought him out of that place and into
this land where you are now living.
And God spake on
this wise, That his seed should
sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into
bondage, and
entreat them evil four hundred years.
God told him that his descendants would be foreigners in a strange land, and that they would be
enslaved and mistreated four hundred years.
And the nation to whom they shall be in
bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in
this place.
‘But I will
punish the nation that enslaves them,’ God said, ‘and afterward they will come forth and worship Me in
this place.’
Then fled Moses at
this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he
begat two sons.
At
this remark, Moses fled to the land of
Midian, where he lived as a foreigner and had two sons.
