Now king David was old and
stricken in years; and they covered him with clothes, but he
gat no heat.
Now King David was old and well along in years, and though they covered him with blankets, he could not keep warm.
And unto
Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been
afflicted in all wherein my father was
afflicted.
Then the king said to
Abiathar the priest, “Go back to your fields in Anathoth. Even
though you deserve to die, I will not put you to death at this time, since you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and you suffered through all that my father suffered.”
Then
tidings came to
Joab: for
Joab had turned after Adonijah,
though he turned not after
Absalom. And
Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
When the news reached
Joab, who had
conspired with Adonijah but not with
Absalom, he fled to the tent of the LORD and took hold of the horns of the altar.
Forasmuch as I
exalted thee out of the dust, and made thee prince over my people Israel; and thou hast walked in the way of
Jeroboam, and hast made my people Israel to sin, to
provoke me to anger with their sins;
“Even
though I lifted you out of the dust and made you ruler over My people Israel, you have walked in the way of
Jeroboam and have caused My people Israel to sin and to
provoke Me to anger by their sins.
And it came to pass at
noon, that
Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry
aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or
peradventure he sleepeth, and must be
awaked.
At
noon Elijah began to
taunt them, saying, “
Shout louder, for he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in
thought, or occupied, or on a journey. Perhaps he is sleeping and must be
awakened!”
And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his
lap full, and came and
shred them into the pot of
pottage: for they knew them not.
One of them went out to the field to gather herbs, and he found a wild vine from which he gathered as many wild gourds as his garment could hold. Then he came back and cut them up into the pot of
stew,
though no one knew what they were.
But
Naaman was
wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I
thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the
leper.
But
Naaman went away
angry, saying, “I
thought that he would surely come out, stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the spot to cure my
leprosy.
Then said
Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. And he said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?
But
Hezekiah said to Isaiah, “The word of the LORD that you have spoken is good.” For he
thought, “Will there not at least be peace and security in my lifetime?”
And the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between two walls, which is by the king’s garden: (now the Chaldees were against the city round about:) and the king went the way toward the plain.
Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah,
For Judah prevailed above his brethren, and of him came the chief ruler; but the
birthright was Joseph’s:)
And
though Judah prevailed over his brothers and a ruler came from him, the
birthright belonged to Joseph.
Of the three, he was more honourable than the two; for he was their captain:
howbeit he attained not to the first three.
He was
doubly honored above the Three, and he became their commander, even
though he was not included among the Three.
Also Hosah, of the children of Merari, had sons; Simri the chief, (for
though he was not the
firstborn, yet his father made him the chief;)
Hosah the Merarite also had sons: Shimri the first (although he was not the
firstborn, his father had appointed him as the first),
And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the
thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou
forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.
As for you, Solomon my son, know the God of your father and serve Him wholeheartedly and with a willing mind, for the LORD searches every heart and understands the intent of every
thought. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you
forsake Him, He will
reject you
forever.
O LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people, and prepare their heart unto thee:
O LORD, God of our fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, keep this desire
forever in the intentions of the hearts of Your people, and direct their hearts toward You.
And
Rehoboam made
Abijah the son of Maachah the chief, to be ruler among his brethren: for he
thought to make him king.
Rehoboam appointed
Abijah son of
Maacah as chief prince among his brothers, intending to make him king.
That prepareth his heart to seek God, the LORD God of his fathers,
though he be not
cleansed according to the
purification of the sanctuary.
who sets his heart on seeking God—the LORD, the God of his fathers—even if he is not
cleansed according to the
purification rules of the sanctuary.”
After these things, and the establishment thereof,
Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and
encamped against the
fenced cities, and
thought to
win them for himself.
After all these acts of faithfulness,
Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah. He laid siege to the fortified cities, intending to
conquer them for himself.
And they set the altar upon his bases; for fear was upon them because of the people of those countries: and they offered burnt offerings
thereon unto the LORD, even burnt offerings morning and evening.
They set up the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the LORD—both the morning and evening burnt offerings—even though they feared the people of the land.
For we were
bondmen; yet our God hath not
forsaken us in our
bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a
reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.
Though we are slaves, our God has not
forsaken us in our
bondage, but He has extended to us grace in the sight of the kings of Persia, giving us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins, and giving us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.
And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great
trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our
iniquities deserve, and hast given us such
deliverance as this;
After all that has come upon us because of our evil deeds and our great guilt (
though You, our God, have punished us less than our
iniquities deserve and have given us such a
remnant as this),
O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
O LORD, God of Israel, You are righteous! For we remain this day as a
remnant. Here we are before You in our guilt,
though because of it no one can stand before You.”
But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them;
though there were of you cast out unto the
uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
but if you return to Me and keep and practice My commandments, then even if your exiles have been banished to the
farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for My Name.’
Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance
sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very
sore afraid,
so the king said to me, “Why is your face
sad,
though you are not ill? This could only be
sadness of the heart.” I was
overwhelmed with fear
Then I consulted with myself, and I
rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact
usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.
and after serious
thought I
rebuked the nobles and officials, saying, “You are exacting
usury from your own brothers!” So I called a large assembly against them
Now it came to pass, when
Sanballat, and
Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (
though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)
When
Sanballat,
Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and not a
gap was left—
though to that time I had not yet
installed the doors in the gates—
That
Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they
thought to do me mischief.
Sanballat and Geshem sent me this message: “Come, let us meet together in one of the villages on the plain of Ono.” But they were
planning to
harm me.
And he
thought scorn to lay hands on
Mordecai alone; for they had shewed him the people of
Mordecai: wherefore
Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of
Ahasuerus, even the people of
Mordecai.
And when he learned the identity of
Mordecai’s people, he
scorned the notion of laying hands on
Mordecai alone. Instead, he sought to destroy all of
Mordecai’s people, the Jews, throughout the kingdom of
Xerxes.
Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in
Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
“Go and
assemble all the Jews who can be found in
Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day, and I and my maidens will fast as you do. After that, I will go to the king, even
though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish!”
So
Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour? Now
Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself?
Haman entered, and the king asked him, “What should be done for the man whom the king is delighted to honor?” Now
Haman thought to himself, “Whom would the king be delighted to honor more than me?”
Now in the
twelfth month, that is, the month
Adar, on the
thirteenth day of the same, when the king’s commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them, (
though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that
hated them;)
On the
thirteenth day of the
twelfth month, the month of
Adar, the king’s command and edict were to be executed. On this day the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, but their plan was overturned and the Jews overpowered those who
hated them.
And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and
sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have
sinned, and
cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
And when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to
purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job
thought, “Perhaps my children have
sinned and
cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular practice.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his
integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
Then the LORD said to
Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. He still retains his
integrity, even
though you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.”
In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,
In disquieting visions in the night, when deep sleep falls on men,
Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.
Though your beginnings were modest, your latter days will
flourish.
Whom,
though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make
supplication to my judge.
For even if I were right, I could not answer. I could only
beg my Judge for mercy.
Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would
despise my life.
Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand.
though You know that I am not guilty, and there is no
deliverance from Your hand?
I should have been as
though I had not been; I should have been carried from the
womb to the grave.
If only I had never come to be, but had been carried from the
womb to the grave.
For vain man would be wise,
though man be born like a wild
ass’s
colt.
But a witless man can no more become wise than the
colt of a wild
donkey can be born a man!
I am as one
mocked of his neighbour, who calleth upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is
laughed to
scorn.
He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp
despised in the
thought of him that is at ease.
The one at ease scorns misfortune as the fate of those whose feet are
slipping.
Though he
slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.
Though He
slay me, I will hope in Him. I will still defend my ways to His face.
Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
If its roots grow old in the ground and its
stump dies in the soil,
Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.
Though his face is covered with fat and his waistline bulges with flesh,
Though I speak, my grief is not asswaged: and
though I
forbear, what am I eased?
Even if I speak, my pain is not relieved, and if I hold back, how will it go away?
My days are past, my purposes are broken off, even the thoughts of my heart.
My days have passed; my plans are broken off— even the desires of my heart.
Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry
aloud, but there is no judgment.
Though I cry out, ‘Violence!’ I get no
response;
though I call for help, there is no justice.
I called my servant, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth.
I call for my servant, but he does not answer,
though I
implore him with my own mouth.
My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children’s sake of mine own body.
And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:
Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.
Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another;
though my
reins be consumed within me.
I will see Him for myself; my eyes will behold Him, and not as a stranger. How my heart yearns within me!
Therefore do my
thoughts cause me to answer, and for this I make
haste.
“So my anxious
thoughts compel me to answer, because of the
turmoil within me.
Though his
excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds;
Though his
arrogance reaches the heavens, and his head touches the clouds,
Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue;
Though evil is sweet in his mouth and he conceals it under his tongue,
Though he
spare it, and
forsake it not; but keep it still within his mouth:
though he cannot bear to let it go and keeps it in his mouth,
He shall
flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of steel shall strike him through.
Behold, I know your
thoughts, and the devices which ye
wrongfully imagine against me.
Behold, I know your thoughts full well, the schemes by which you would wrong me.
He draweth also the mighty with his power: he riseth up, and no man is sure of life.
Yet by His power, God drags away the mighty; though rising up, they have no assurance of life.
Though it be given him to be in safety,
whereon he resteth; yet his eyes are upon their ways.
He gives them a sense of security, but His eyes are on their ways.
For what is the hope of the
hypocrite,
though he hath gained, when God taketh away his soul?
For what is the hope of the godless when he is cut off, when God takes away his life?
If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.
Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; and his offspring will never have enough food.
Though he
heap up silver as the dust, and prepare
raiment as the clay;
Though he heaps up silver like dust and piles up a
wardrobe like clay,
Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.
So I thought: ‘I will die in my nest and multiply my days as the sand.
Howbeit he will not stretch out his hand to the grave,
though they cry in his destruction.
Yet no one stretches out his hand to a ruined man when he
cries for help in his distress.
(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s
womb;)
though from my youth I reared him as would a father, and from my mother’s
womb I guided the widow—
I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.
I thought that age should speak, and many years should teach wisdom.
Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without
transgression.
Would I lie about my case? My wound is incurable,
though I am without
transgression.’
She is
hardened against her young ones, as
though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;
She treats her young harshly, as if not her own, with no
concern that her labor was in vain.
Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth.
Though the river rages,
Behemoth is unafraid; he remains secure,
though the Jordan surges to his mouth.
I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no
thought can be
withholden from thee.
“I know that You can do all things and that no plan of Yours can be
thwarted.
The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.
In his pride the wicked man does not seek Him; in all his schemes there is no God.
For they intended evil against thee: they imagined a
mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.
Though they intend You
harm, the schemes they
devise will not prevail.
Yea,
though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Though an host should
encamp against me, my heart shall not fear:
though war should rise against me, in this will I be
confident.
Though an army encamps around me, my heart will not fear; though a war breaks out against me, I will keep my trust.
When my father and my mother
forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.
Though my father and mother
forsake me, the LORD will receive me.
The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
The counsel of the LORD stands
forever, the purposes of His heart to all generations.
I
behaved myself as
though he had been my friend or brother: I bowed down
heavily, as one that mourneth for his mother.
I
paced about as for my friend or brother; I was bowed down with grief, like one
mourning for his mother.
For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be:
yea, thou shalt
diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.
Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.
Though he falls, he will not be
overwhelmed, for the LORD is holding his hand.
The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to
slay him.
Though the wicked lie in wait for the righteous, and seek to
slay them,
Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not:
yea, I sought him, but he could not be found.
yet he passed away and was no more; though I searched, he could not be found.
Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders You have done, and the plans You have for us— none can compare to You— if I
proclaim and declare them, they are more than I can count.
All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely in thy covenant.
All this has come upon us,
though we have not forgotten You or
betrayed Your covenant.
Though thou hast
sore broken us in the place of
dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death.
But You have
crushed us in the
lair of jackals; You have covered us with deepest darkness.
Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
Therefore we will not fear,
though the earth is transformed and the mountains are
toppled into the depths of the seas,
Though the waters thereof
roar and be troubled,
though the mountains
shake with the swelling thereof.
Selah.
We have thought of thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple.
Within Your temple, O God, we
contemplate Your loving devotion.
Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
Their graves are their eternal homes— their dwellings for endless generations— even though their lands were their namesakes.
Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to
thyself.
Though in his lifetime he blesses his soul— and men praise you when you
prosper—
These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou
thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as
thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
You have done these things, and I kept silent; you
thought I was just like you. But now I
rebuke you and
accuse you to your face.
He hath delivered my soul in peace from the battle that was against me: for there were many with me.
He redeems my soul in peace from the battle
waged against me, even
though many
oppose me.
Every day they
wrest my words: all their
thoughts are against me for evil.
All day long they twist my words; all their
thoughts are on my
demise.
They
devise injustice and say, “We have perfected a secret plan.” For the inner man and the heart are
mysterious.
Though ye have
lien among the pots, yet shall ye be as the wings of a
dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold.
Though you lie down among the sheepfolds, the wings of the
dove are covered with silver, and her feathers with
shimmering gold.”
They that
hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies
wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.
Those who
hate me without cause outnumber the hairs of my head; many are those who would destroy me— my enemies for no reason.
Though I did not
steal, I must repay.
My mouth shall
shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof.
My mouth will declare Your righteousness and Your salvation all day long, though I cannot know their full measure.
Thou, which hast shewed me great and
sore troubles, shalt
quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
Though You have shown me many troubles and misfortunes, You will revive me once again. Even from the depths of the earth You will bring me back up.
When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;
When I tried to understand all this, it was
troublesome in my sight
Though he had commanded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven,
Yet He commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of the heavens.
