And a letter unto
Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which
appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God
upon me.
And may I have a letter to
Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so that he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel to the temple, for the city wall, and for the house I will occupy.” And because the
gracious hand of my God was
upon me, the king granted my requests.
And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I
rode upon.
I set out at night with a few men. I did not tell
anyone what my God had laid on my heart to do for Jerusalem. The only animal with me was the one on which I was riding.
Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.
I also told them about the
gracious hand of my God
upon me, and what the king had said to me. “Let us start rebuilding,” they replied, and they set their hands to this good work.
Hear, O our God; for we are
despised: and turn their reproach
upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity:
Hear us, O God, for we are
despised. Turn their
scorn back
upon their own heads, and let them be taken as
plunder to a land of captivity.
And it came to pass, that when the Jews which dwelt by them came, they said unto us ten times, From all places whence ye shall return unto us they will be upon you.
At that time the Jews who lived nearby came and told us ten times over, “Wherever you turn, they will attack us.”
And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another.
Then I said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people: “The work is great and extensive, and we are spread out far from one another along the wall.
There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.
Still others were saying, “We have borrowed money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards.
Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the
bondage was heavy
upon this people.
Each day one ox, six choice sheep, and some fowl were prepared for me, and once every ten days an abundance of all kinds of wine was provided. But I did not demand the food
allotted to the governor, because the burden on the people was so heavy.
Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
Remember me
favorably, O my God, for all that I have done for this people.
Now it came to pass, when
Sanballat, and
Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors
upon the gates;)
When
Sanballat,
Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall and not a
gap was left—though to that time I had not yet
installed the doors in the gates—
My God, think thou
upon Tobiah and
Sanballat according to these their works, and on the
prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would have put me in fear.
And
Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding,
upon the first day of the seventh month.
On the first day of the seventh month,
Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly of men and women and all who could
listen and understand.
And
Ezra the
scribe stood
upon a
pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana,
Zechariah, and Meshullam.
Ezra the
scribe stood on a high wooden platform built for this occasion. At his right side stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, and at his left were Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum,
Hash-baddanah,
Zechariah, and Meshullam.
So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim.
And the people went out, brought back branches, and made booths on their own rooftops, in their courtyards, in the court of the house of God, and in the squares by the Water Gate and by the Gate of Ephraim.
Now in the twenty and fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackclothes, and earth upon them.
On the twenty-fourth day of the same month, the Israelites gathered together, fasting and wearing
sackcloth, with dust on their heads.
Then stood up
upon the stairs, of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani, and
cried with a loud voice unto the LORD their God.
And the Levites—Jeshua, Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, and Chenani—stood on the raised platform and
cried out in a loud voice to the LORD their God.
And shewedst signs and wonders
upon Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land: for thou knewest that they dealt proudly against them. So
didst thou get thee a name, as it is this day.
You performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, all his officials, and all the people of his land, for You knew they had acted with
arrogance against our fathers. You made a name for
Yourself that endures to this day.
Thou camest down also
upon mount
Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments:
You came down on Mount
Sinai and spoke with them from heaven. You gave them just ordinances, true laws, and good statutes and commandments.
Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God, who keepest covenant and mercy, let not all the trouble seem little before thee, that hath come upon us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all thy people, since the time of the kings of Assyria unto this day.
So now, our God, the great and mighty and
awesome God who keeps His
gracious covenant, do not view lightly all the
hardship that has come
upon us, and
upon our kings and leaders, our priests and prophets, our ancestors and all Your people, from the days of the kings of Assyria until
today.
Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought
upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:
You are just in all that has
befallen us, because You have acted faithfully, while we have acted wickedly.
And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the law:
We have cast lots among the priests, Levites, and people for the
donation of wood by our families at the appointed times each year. They are to bring it to the house of our God to burn on the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the Law.
Then I brought up the princes of Judah
upon the wall, and appointed two great companies of them that gave
thanks,
whereof one went on the right hand
upon the wall toward the dung gate:
Then I brought the leaders of Judah up on the wall, and I appointed two great
thanksgiving choirs. One was to proceed along the top of the wall to the right, toward the Dung Gate.
And the other company of them that gave
thanks went over against them, and I after them, and the half of the people
upon the wall, from beyond the tower of the furnaces even unto the broad wall;
The second
thanksgiving choir proceeded to the left, and I followed it with half the people along the top of the wall, past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall,
Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil
upon us, and
upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath
upon Israel by
profaning the sabbath.
Did not your forefathers do the same things, so that our God brought all this
disaster on us and on this city? And now you are
rekindling His wrath against Israel by
profaning the Sabbath!”
Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver,
upon a
pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.
Hangings of white and blue linen were fastened with cords of fine white and purple material to silver rings on the marble pillars. Gold and silver couches were arranged on a mosaic
pavement of
porphyry, marble, mother-of-
pearl, and other costly stones.
Now when the turn of
Esther, the daughter of Abihail the uncle of
Mordecai, who had taken her for his daughter, was come to go in unto the king, she required nothing but what Hegai the king’s
chamberlain, the keeper of the women, appointed. And
Esther obtained favour in the sight of all them that looked
upon her.
Now
Esther was the daughter of Abihail, the uncle from whom
Mordecai had adopted her as his own daughter. And when it was her turn to go to the king, she did not ask for anything except what Hegai, the king’s trusted official in charge of the
harem, had
advised. And
Esther found favor in the eyes of
everyone who saw her.
And the king loved
Esther above all the women, and she obtained grace and favour in his sight more than all the virgins; so that he set the royal crown
upon her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
And the king loved
Esther more than all the other women, and she found grace and favor in his sight more than all of the other virgins. So he placed the royal crown
upon her head and made her queen in place of Vashti.
And the letters were sent by posts into all the king’s provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even
upon the
thirteenth day of the
twelfth month, which is the month
Adar, and to take the
spoil of them for a prey.
And the letters were sent by couriers to each of the royal provinces with the order to destroy, kill, and
annihilate all the Jews—young and old, women and children—and to
plunder their possessions on a single day, the
thirteenth day of
Adar, the
twelfth month.
Then called
Esther for Hatach, one of the king’s chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend
upon her, and gave him a commandment to
Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.
Then
Esther summoned Hathach, one of the king’s eunuchs appointed to her, and she
dispatched him to
Mordecai to learn what was troubling him and why.
Now it came to pass on the third day, that
Esther put on her royal
apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king’s house, over against the king’s house: and the king sat
upon his royal throne in the royal house, over against the gate of the house.
On the third day,
Esther put on her royal
attire and stood in the inner court of the palace across from the king’s quarters. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the royal courtroom, facing the entrance.
Let the royal
apparel be brought which the king useth to wear, and the horse that the king rideth
upon, and the crown royal which is set
upon his head:
have them bring a royal
robe that the king himself has worn and a horse on which the king himself has
ridden—one with a royal crest placed on its head.
Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the
banquet of wine; and
Haman was fallen
upon the bed
whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of the king’s mouth, they covered
Haman’s face.
Just as the king returned from the palace garden to the
banquet hall,
Haman was falling on the
couch where
Esther was
reclining. The king
exclaimed, “Would he actually
assault the queen while I am in the palace?” As soon as the words had left the king’s mouth, they covered
Haman’s face.
So the posts that
rode upon mules and camels went out, being
hastened and pressed on by the king’s commandment. And the decree was given at
Shushan the palace.
The couriers
rode out in
haste on their royal horses, pressed on by the command of the king. And the edict was also issued in the citadel of
Susa.
And in every province, and in every city,
whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and
gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell
upon them.
In every province and every city, wherever the king’s edict and decree reached, there was joy and
gladness among the Jews, with feasting and
celebrating. And many of the people of the land themselves became Jews, because the fear of the Jews had fallen
upon them.
The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king
Ahasuerus, to lay hand on such as sought their
hurt: and no man could
withstand them; for the fear of them fell
upon all people.
In each of the provinces of King
Xerxes, the Jews assembled in their cities to attack those who sought to
harm them. No man could
withstand them, because the fear of them had fallen
upon all peoples.
And all the rulers of the provinces, and the lieutenants, and the
deputies, and officers of the king, helped the Jews; because the fear of
Mordecai fell
upon them.
And all the officials of the provinces, the satraps, the governors, and the king’s administrators helped the Jews, because the fear of
Mordecai had fallen
upon them.
Then said
Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in
Shushan to do to
morrow also according unto this day’s decree, and let
Haman’s ten sons be
hanged upon the
gallows.
But when
Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked
device, which he devised against the Jews, should return
upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be
hanged on the
gallows.
But when it came before the king, he commanded by letter that the wicked scheme which
Haman had devised against the Jews should come back
upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be
hanged on the
gallows.
The Jews ordained, and took upon them, and upon their seed, and upon all such as joined themselves unto them, so as it should not fail, that they would keep these two days according to their writing, and according to their appointed time every year;
the Jews bound themselves to establish the custom that they and their descendants and all who join them should not fail to
celebrate these two days at the appointed time each and every year, according to their regulation.
And the king
Ahasuerus laid a tribute
upon the land, and
upon the isles of the sea.
Now King
Xerxes imposed tribute throughout the land, even to its
farthest shores.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only
upon himself put not forth thine hand. So
Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
“Very well,” said the LORD to
Satan. “Everything he has is in your hands, but you must not lay a hand on the man himself.” Then
Satan went out from the presence of the LORD.
And the
Sabeans fell
upon them, and took them away;
yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
the
Sabeans swooped down and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell
upon the camels, and have carried them away,
yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands,
raided the camels, and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and
smote the four corners of the house, and it fell
upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It
collapsed on the young people and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
Then Job arose, and rent his
mantle, and
shaved his head, and fell down
upon the ground, and worshipped,
Then Job stood up,
tore his
robe, and
shaved his head. He fell to the ground and worshiped,
Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come
upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and
Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to
mourn with him and to comfort him.
Now when Job’s three friends—Eliphaz the Temanite,
Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite—heard about all this
adversity that had come
upon him, each of them came from his home, and they met together to go and
sympathize with Job and comfort him.
And when they lifted up their eyes
afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and
wept; and they rent every one his
mantle, and
sprinkled dust
upon their heads toward heaven.
When they lifted up their eyes from
afar, they could barely recognize Job. They began to
weep aloud, and each man
tore his
robe and threw dust in the air over his head.
So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, but no one spoke a word to him because they saw how intense his suffering was.
Let that day be darkness; let not God regard it from above, neither let the light
shine upon it.
If only that day had turned to darkness! May God above disregard it; may no light
shine upon it.
Let darkness and the shadow of death
stain it; let a cloud dwell
upon it; let the blackness of the day
terrify it.
May darkness and
gloom reclaim it, and a cloud settle over it; may the blackness of the day
overwhelm it.
As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.
If only darkness had taken that night away! May it not appear among the days of the year; may it never be entered in any of the months.
For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.
For the thing I feared has overtaken me, and what I
dreaded has
befallen me.
But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.
But now trouble has come
upon you, and you are
weary. It strikes you, and you are dismayed.
Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:
He gives rain to the earth and sends water upon the fields.
Now therefore be content, look upon me; for it is evident unto you if I lie.
But now, please look at me. Would I lie to your face?
Is there not an appointed time to man
upon earth? are not his days also like the days of an
hireling?
“Is not man
consigned to labor on earth? Are not his days like those of a
hired hand?
The eye of him that hath seen me shall see me no more: thine eyes are upon me, and I am not.
The eye that beholds me will no longer see me. You will look for me, but I will be no more.
What is man, that thou shouldest
magnify him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart
upon him?
What is man that You should
exalt him, that You should set Your heart
upon him,
(For we are but of
yesterday, and know nothing, because our days
upon earth are a shadow:)
For we were born
yesterday and know nothing; our days on earth are but a shadow.
He shall
lean upon his house, but it shall not stand: he shall hold it fast, but it shall not
endure.
He leans on his web, but it gives way; he holds fast, but it does not
endure.
Which alone spreadeth out the heavens, and treadeth upon the waves of the sea.
He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.
Neither is there any
daysman betwixt us, that might lay his hand
upon us both.
Nor is there a
mediator between us, to lay his hand
upon us both.
My soul is
weary of my life; I will leave my
complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.
“I
loathe my own life; I will express my
complaint and speak in the bitterness of my soul.
Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest
oppress, that thou shouldest
despise the work of thine hands, and
shine upon the counsel of the wicked?
Does it please You to
oppress me, to
reject the work of Your hands and favor the schemes of the wicked?
For it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and again thou shewest
thyself marvellous
upon me.
Should I hold my head high, You would
hunt me like a lion, and again display Your power against me.
Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine
indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.
You produce new witnesses against me and multiply Your anger toward me. Hardships
assault me in wave after wave.
I am as one
mocked of his neighbour, who calleth
upon God, and he answereth him: the just upright man is
laughed to
scorn.
He poureth contempt upon princes, and weakeneth the strength of the mighty.
He pours out contempt on nobles and disarms the mighty.
Would His majesty not
terrify you? Would the
dread of Him not fall
upon you?
Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and lookest narrowly unto all my paths; thou settest a print upon the heels of my feet.
You put my feet in the stocks and stand watch over all my paths; You set a limit for the soles of my feet.
And
dost thou open thine eyes
upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
Do You open Your eyes to one like this? Will You bring him into judgment before You?
But his flesh
upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall
mourn.
He feels only the pain of his own body and mourns only for himself.”
A
dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come
upon him.
Sounds of terror fill his ears; in his prosperity the destroyer attacks him.
He runneth
upon him, even on his neck,
upon the thick
bosses of his bucklers:
He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he
prolong the perfection thereof
upon the earth.
He will no longer be rich; his wealth will not
endure. His possessions will not overspread the land.
He teareth me in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me.
His anger has
torn me and opposed me; He gnashes His teeth at me. My
adversary pierces me with His eyes.
They open their mouths against me and strike my cheeks with contempt; they join together against me.
His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my
reins asunder, and
doth not
spare; he poureth out my gall
upon the ground.
His archers
surround me. He pierces my
kidneys without mercy and spills my gall on the ground.
He breaketh me with breach
upon breach, he runneth
upon me like a
giant.
He breaks me with wound
upon wound; He rushes me like a mighty
warrior.
I have
sewn sackcloth over my skin; I have buried my horn in the dust.
For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walketh
upon a
snare.
For his own feet lead him into a net, and he wanders into its
mesh.
It shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his:
brimstone shall be scattered
upon his
habitation.
Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur rains down on his dwelling.
Have
pity upon me, have
pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God hath touched me.
Have
pity on me, my friends, have
pity, for the hand of God has struck me.
For I know that my
redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day
upon the earth:
But I know that my
Redeemer lives, and in the end He will stand
upon the earth.
Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth,
Do you not know that from antiquity, since man was placed on the earth,
In the
fulness of his
sufficiency he shall be in straits: every hand of the wicked shall come
upon him.
In the midst of his
plenty, he will be distressed; the full force of misery will come
upon him.
When he is about to fill his
belly, God shall cast the
fury of his wrath
upon him, and shall rain it
upon him while he is eating.
When he has filled his stomach, God will
vent His
fury upon him, raining it down on him as he eats.
It is drawn, and cometh out of the body;
yea, the
glittering sword cometh out of his gall: terrors are
upon him.
It is drawn out of his back, the
gleaming point from his liver. Terrors come over him.
Mark me, and be
astonished, and lay your hand
upon your mouth.
Look at me and be
appalled; put your hand over your mouth.
Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God upon them.
Their homes are safe from fear; no rod of punishment from God is upon them.
How
oft is the
candle of the wicked put out! and how
oft cometh their destruction
upon them! God distributeth sorrows in his anger.
How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? Does
disaster come
upon them? Does God, in His anger,
apportion destruction?
Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall
shine upon thy ways.
Your decisions will be carried out, and light will
shine on your ways.
Though it be given him to be in safety,
whereon he resteth; yet his eyes are
upon their ways.
He gives them a sense of security, but His eyes are on their ways.
Is there any number of his armies? and
upon whom
doth not his light arise?
Can His troops be numbered? On whom does His light not rise?
He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth upon nothing.
He holdeth back the face of his throne, and spreadeth his cloud upon it.
He covers the face of the full moon, spreading over it His cloud.
Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him?
Will God hear his cry when distress comes upon him?
