And when
Jehoiakim the king, with all his mighty men, and all the princes, heard his words, the king sought to put him to death: but when Urijah heard it, he
was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt;
King
Jehoiakim and all his mighty men and officials heard his words, and the king sought to put him to death. But when Uriah found out about it, he fled in fear and went to Egypt.
Nevertheless the hand of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan
was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him into the hand of the people to put him to death.
Nevertheless,
Ahikam son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, so he
was not handed over to the people to be put to death.
Hearken not unto them; serve the king of Babylon, and live: wherefore should this city be laid
waste?
Do not
listen to them. Serve the king of Babylon and live! Why should this city become a ruin?
And it came to pass the same year, in the beginning of the reign of
Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, and in the fifth month, that Hananiah the son of Azur the prophet, which
was of
Gibeon, spake unto me in the house of the LORD, in the presence of the priests and of all the people, saying,
In the fifth month of that same year, the fourth year, near the beginning of the reign of King
Zedekiah of Judah, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur, who
was from
Gibeon, said to me in the house of the LORD in the presence of the priests and all the people:
(After that Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths, were departed from Jerusalem;)
(This
was after King Jeconiah, the queen mother, the court officials, the officials of Judah and Jerusalem, the
craftsmen, and the metalsmiths had been exiled from Jerusalem.)
By the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, (whom
Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Babylon to
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon) saying,
The letter
was entrusted to Elasah son of Shaphan and Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom
Zedekiah king of Judah sent to King
Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon. It stated:
For the LORD hath redeemed Jacob, and
ransomed him from the hand of him that
was stronger than he.
For the LORD has
ransomed Jacob and redeemed him from the hand that had overpowered him.
Thus saith the LORD; A voice
was heard in
Ramah,
lamentation, and bitter
weeping;
Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not.
This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in
Ramah,
mourning and great
weeping,
Rachel weeping for her children, and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
I have surely heard Ephraim
bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast
chastised me, and I
was chastised, as a
bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art the LORD my God.
I have surely heard Ephraim’s
moaning: ‘You disciplined me severely, like an untrained
calf. Restore me, that I may return, for You are the LORD my God.
Upon this I
awaked, and
beheld; and my sleep
was sweet unto me.
At this I
awoke and looked around. My sleep had been most pleasant to me.
Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they
brake, although I
was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt— a covenant they broke, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD.
The word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of
Zedekiah king of Judah, which
was the
eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar.
For then the king of Babylon’s army besieged Jerusalem: and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison, which was in the king of Judah’s house.
At that time the army of the king of Babylon
was besieging Jerusalem, and Jeremiah the prophet
was imprisoned in the
courtyard of the guard, which
was in the palace of the king of Judah.
So Hanameel mine uncle’s son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD, and said unto me,
Buy my field, I pray thee, that is in Anathoth, which is in the country of Benjamin: for the right of inheritance is thine, and the
redemption is thine;
buy it for
thyself. Then I knew that this
was the word of the LORD.
Then, as the LORD had said, my cousin Hanamel came to me in the
courtyard of the guard and urged me, ‘Please
buy my field in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, for you own the right of inheritance and
redemption.
Buy it for
yourself.’” Then I knew that this
was the word of the LORD.
And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncle’s son, that
was in Anathoth, and
weighed him the money, even seventeen shekels of silver.
So I bought the field in Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel, and I
weighed out seventeen shekels of silver.
So I took the evidence of the purchase, both that which was sealed according to the law and custom, and that which was open:
Then I took the deed of purchase—the sealed copy with its terms and conditions, as well as the open copy—
For this city hath been to me as a
provocation of mine anger and of my
fury from the day that they built it even unto this day; that I should remove it from before my face,
For this city has
aroused My wrath and
fury from the day it
was built until now. Therefore I will remove it from My presence
Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying,
While Jeremiah
was still confined in the
courtyard of the guard, the word of the LORD came to him a second time:
Thus saith the LORD; Again there shall be heard in this place, which ye say shall be
desolate without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are
desolate, without man, and without inhabitant, and without beast,
This is what the LORD says: In this place you say is a wasteland without man or beast, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem that are deserted—inhabited by neither man nor beast—there will be heard again
When the king of Babylon’s army fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Judah that were left, against
Lachish, and against Azekah: for these defenced cities remained of the cities of Judah.
as the army of the king of Babylon
was fighting against Jerusalem and the remaining cities of Judah—against
Lachish and Azekah. For these were the only fortified cities remaining in Judah.
And I brought them into the house of the LORD, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door:
and I brought them into the house of the LORD, to a chamber occupied by the sons of Hanan son of Igdaliah, a man of God. This room
was near the chamber of the officials, which
was above the chamber of Maaseiah son of Shallum the
doorkeeper.
And it came to pass in the fifth year of
Jehoiakim the son of
Josiah king of Judah, in the ninth month, that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem, and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem.
Now in the ninth month of the fifth year of
Jehoiakim son of
Josiah king of Judah, a fast before the LORD
was proclaimed to all the people of Jerusalem and all who had come there from the cities of Judah.
Then read
Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the
scribe, in the higher court, at the entry of the new gate of the LORD’S house, in the ears of all the people.
From the chamber of Gemariah son of Shaphan the
scribe, which
was in the upper
courtyard at the opening of the New Gate of the house of the LORD,
Baruch read from the
scroll the words of Jeremiah in the hearing of all the people.
And they asked
Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How
didst thou write all these words at his mouth?
“Tell us now,” they asked
Baruch, “how did you write all these words?
Was it at Jeremiah’s
dictation?”
Then
Baruch answered them, He pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book.
“It
was at his
dictation,”
Baruch replied. “He recited all these words to me and I wrote them in ink on the
scroll.”
Now the king sat in the winterhouse in the ninth month: and there
was a fire on the
hearth burning before him.
Since it was the ninth month, the king was sitting in his winter quarters with a fire burning before him.
And it came to pass, that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves, he cut it with the
penknife, and cast it into the fire that
was on the
hearth, until all the roll
was consumed in the fire that
was on the
hearth.
And as soon as Jehudi had read three or four columns,
Jehoiakim would cut them off with a
scribe’s knife and throw them into the
firepot, until the entire
scroll had been consumed by the fire.
Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison.
Now Jeremiah was free to come and go among the people, for they had not yet put him in prison.
Then Pharaoh’s army
was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard
tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.
Pharaoh’s army had left Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were
besieging Jerusalem heard the report, they withdrew from Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,
When the
Chaldean army withdrew from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,
And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans.
But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, the captain of the guard, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah, seized him and said, “You are deserting to the Chaldeans!”
When Jeremiah
was entered into the
dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;
So Jeremiah went into a cell in the
dungeon and remained there a long time.
Then
Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers street, until all the bread in the city were spent. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.
So King
Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be placed in the
courtyard of the guard and given a
loaf of bread daily from the street of the bakers, until all the bread in the city
was gone. So Jeremiah remained in the
courtyard of the guard.
Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the
dungeon of Malchiah the son of Hammelech, that
was in the court of the prison: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the
dungeon there
was no water, but
mire: so Jeremiah sunk in the
mire.
So they took Jeremiah and dropped him into the
cistern of Malchiah, the king’s son, which
was in the
courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah with ropes into the
cistern, which had no water but only mud, and Jeremiah
sank down into the mud.
Now when Ebed-melech the
Ethiopian, one of the eunuchs which
was in the king’s house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the
dungeon; the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin;
Now Ebed-melech the
Cushite, a court official in the royal palace, heard that Jeremiah had been put into the
cistern. While the king
was sitting at the Gate of Benjamin,
Then thou shalt say unto them, I presented my
supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to
Jonathan’s house, to die there.
then tell them, ‘I
was presenting to the king my petition that he not return me to the house of
Jonathan to die there.’”
Then came all the princes unto Jeremiah, and asked him: and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.
When all the officials came to Jeremiah and questioned him, he relayed to them the exact words the king had commanded him to say. So they said no more to him, for no one had overheard the conversation.
So Jeremiah abode in the court of the prison until the day that Jerusalem was taken: and he was there when Jerusalem was taken.
And Jeremiah remained in the
courtyard of the guard until the day Jerusalem
was captured.
And in the
eleventh year of
Zedekiah, in the fourth month, the ninth day of the month, the city
was broken up.
And on the ninth day of the fourth month of
Zedekiah’s
eleventh year, the city
was breached.
Now the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah, while he was shut up in the court of the prison, saying,
And while Jeremiah had been confined in the
courtyard of the guard, the word of the LORD had come to him:
Now while he
was not yet gone back, he said, Go back also to Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon hath made governor over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people: or go
wheresoever it seemeth convenient unto thee to go. So the captain of the guard gave him
victuals and a reward, and let him go.
But before Jeremiah turned to go, Nebuzaradan added, “Return to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and stay with him among the people, or go
anywhere else that seems right.” Then the captain of the guard gave him a
ration and a gift and released him.
Now it came to pass in the seventh month, that
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, and the princes of the king, even ten men with him, came unto Gedaliah the son of
Ahikam to
Mizpah; and there they did eat bread together in
Mizpah.
In the seventh month,
Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who
was a member of the royal family and one of the king’s chief officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of
Ahikam at
Mizpah, and they
ate a meal together there.
And it
was so, when they came into the midst of the city, that
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah
slew them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he, and the men that were with him.
And when they came into the city,
Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men with him slaughtered them and threw them into a
cistern.
Now the pit wherein
Ishmael had cast all the dead bodies of the men, whom he had slain because of Gedaliah,
was it which
Asa the king had made for fear of
Baasha king of Israel: and
Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with them that were slain.
Now the
cistern into which
Ishmael had thrown all the bodies of the men he had struck down along with Gedaliah
was a large one that King
Asa had made for fear of
Baasha king of Israel.
Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.
Wherefore my
fury and mine anger
was poured forth, and
was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they are
wasted and
desolate, as at this day.
Therefore My wrath and anger poured out and burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, so that they have become the
desolate ruin they are
today.
And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven, and poured out drink offerings unto her, did we make her cakes to worship her, and pour out drink offerings unto her, without our men?
“Moreover,” said the women, “when we burned incense to the Queen of Heaven and poured out drink offerings to her,
was it without our husbands’ knowledge that we made
sacrificial cakes in her image and poured out drink offerings to her?”
Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will give Pharaoh-hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies, and into the hand of them that seek his life; as I gave
Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, his enemy, and that sought his life.
This is what the LORD says: Behold, I will deliver Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt into the hands of his enemies who seek his life, just as I delivered
Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, the enemy who
was seeking his life.”
Thus shalt thou say unto him, The LORD saith thus; Behold, that which I have built will I break down, and that which I have planted I will
pluck up, even this whole land.
Thus Jeremiah
was to say to
Baruch: “This is what the LORD says: Throughout the land I will
demolish what I have built and
uproot what I have planted.
Against Egypt, against the army of Pharaoh-
necho king of Egypt, which
was by the river Euphrates in Carchemish, which Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon
smote in the fourth year of
Jehoiakim the son of
Josiah king of Judah.
concerning Egypt and the army of Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which
was defeated at Carchemish on the Euphrates River by
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon in the fourth year of
Jehoiakim the son of
Josiah king of Judah:
Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled
apace, and look not back: for fear
was round about, saith the LORD.
Why am I seeing this? They are
terrified, they are retreating; their warriors are defeated, they
flee in
haste without looking back; terror is on every side!” declares the LORD.
They did cry there, Pharaoh king of Egypt is but a noise; he hath passed the time appointed.
There they will cry out: ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt was all noise; he has let the appointed time pass him by.’
O thou daughter dwelling in Egypt, furnish
thyself to go into captivity: for
Noph shall be
waste and
desolate without an inhabitant.
Pack your bags for exile, O daughter dwelling in Egypt! For
Memphis will be laid
waste, destroyed and uninhabited.
Also her
hired men are in the midst of her like
fatted bullocks; for they also are turned back, and are fled away together: they did not stand, because the day of their
calamity was come upon them, and the time of their
visitation.
Even the
mercenaries among her are like
fattened calves. They too will turn back; together they will
flee, they will not stand their ground, for the day of
calamity is coming upon them— the time of their punishment.
Give wings unto Moab, that it may
flee and get away: for the cities thereof shall be
desolate, without any to dwell therein.
Put salt on Moab, for she will be laid
waste; her cities will become
desolate, with no one to dwell in them.
For
was not Israel a
derision unto thee?
was he found among
thieves? for since thou spakest of him, thou skippedst for joy.
Was not Israel your object of
ridicule?
Was he ever found among
thieves? For whenever you speak of him you
shake your head.
For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment
was not to drink of the cup have
assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.
For this is what the LORD says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you must drink it too.
For I have
sworn by myself, saith the LORD, that
Bozrah shall become a
desolation, a reproach, a
waste, and a
curse; and all the cities thereof shall be perpetual
wastes.
The earth is moved at the noise of their fall, at the cry the noise thereof was heard in the Red sea.
At the sound of their fall the earth will
quake; their cry will resound to the Red Sea.
Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath
devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones.
Israel is a scattered flock,
chased away by lions. The first to
devour him
was the king of Assyria; the last to
crush his bones
was Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.”
Go up against the land of Merathaim, even against it, and against the inhabitants of Pekod: waste and utterly destroy after them, saith the LORD, and do according to all that I have commanded thee.
Go up against the land of Merathaim, and against the residents of Pekod. Kill them and
devote them to destruction. Do all that I have commanded you,” declares the LORD.
I have laid a
snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou
wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast
striven against the LORD.
I laid a
snare for you, O Babylon, and you were caught before you knew it. You were found and captured because you
challenged the LORD.
For Israel hath not been
forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the LORD of hosts; though their land
was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.
For Israel and Judah have not been abandoned by their God, the LORD of Hosts, though their land is full of guilt before the Holy One of Israel.”
Babylon hath been a golden cup in the LORD’S hand, that made all the earth
drunken: the nations have
drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are
mad.
Babylon
was a gold cup in the hand of the LORD, making the whole earth
drunk. The nations
drank her wine; therefore the nations have gone
mad.
The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, when he went with
Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. And this Seraiah
was a quiet prince.
This is the message that Jeremiah the prophet gave to the
quartermaster Seraiah son of Neriah, the son of Mahseiah, when he went to Babylon with King
Zedekiah of Judah in the fourth year of
Zedekiah’s reign.
Zedekiah was one and twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name
was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of
Libnah.
Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother’s name
was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah; she
was from
Libnah.
And he did that which
was evil in the eyes of the LORD, according to all that
Jehoiakim had done.
And in the fourth month, in the ninth day of the month, the famine
was sore in the city, so that there
was no bread for the people of the land.
By the ninth day of the fourth month, the famine in the city was so severe that the people of the land had no food.
Then the city was broken up, and all the men of war fled, and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king’s garden; (now the Chaldeans were by the city round about:) and they went by the way of the plain.
Then the city was breached; and though the Chaldeans had surrounded the city, all the men of war fled the city by night by way of the gate between the two walls near the king’s garden. They headed toward the Arabah,
But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king, and overtook
Zedekiah in the plains of
Jericho; and all his army
was scattered from him.
but the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king and overtook
Zedekiah in the plains of
Jericho, and all his army
was separated from him.
Now in the fifth month, in the tenth day of the month, which
was the
nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, came Nebuzar-adan, captain of the guard, which served the king of Babylon, into Jerusalem,
On the tenth day of the fifth month, in the
nineteenth year of
Nebuchadnezzar’s reign over Babylon, Nebuzaradan captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, entered Jerusalem.
Also the pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD, and the bases, and the
brasen sea that
was in the house of the LORD, the Chaldeans
brake, and carried all the brass of them to Babylon.
Moreover, the Chaldeans broke up the bronze pillars and stands and the bronze Sea in the house of the LORD, and they carried all the bronze to Babylon.
And the basons, and the firepans, and the
bowls, and the caldrons, and the candlesticks, and the spoons, and the cups; that which
was of gold in gold, and that which
was of silver in silver, took the captain of the guard away.
The captain of the guard also took away the basins, censers,
sprinkling bowls, pots, lampstands, pans, and drink offering
bowls—anything made of pure gold or fine silver.
The two pillars, one sea, and twelve
brasen bulls that were under the bases, which king Solomon had made in the house of the LORD: the brass of all these vessels
was without weight.
As for the two pillars, the Sea, the twelve bronze bulls under it, and the movable stands that King Solomon had made for the house of the LORD, the weight of the bronze from all these articles was beyond measure.
And concerning the pillars, the height of one
pillar was eighteen cubits; and a
fillet of twelve cubits did compass it; and the thickness thereof
was four fingers: it
was hollow.
Each
pillar was eighteen cubits tall and twelve cubits in circumference; each
was hollow, four fingers thick.
And a
chapiter of brass
was upon it; and the height of one
chapiter was five cubits, with network and pomegranates upon the chapiters round about, all of brass. The second
pillar also and the pomegranates were like unto these.
The bronze capital
atop one
pillar was five cubits high, with a network of bronze pomegranates all around. The second
pillar, with its pomegranates,
was similar.
And the king of Babylon
smote them, and put them to death in Riblah in the land of
Hamath. Thus Judah
was carried away
captive out of his own land.
There at Riblah in the land of
Hamath, the king of Babylon struck them down and put them to death. So Judah
was taken into exile, away from its own land.
And for his diet, there was a continual diet given him of the king of Babylon, every day a portion until the day of his death, all the days of his life.
And the king of Babylon provided
Jehoiachin a daily portion for the rest of his life, until the day of his death.
How
doth the city sit solitary, that
was full of people how is she become as a widow she that
was great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary
How
lonely lies the city, once so full of people! She who
was great among the nations has become a widow. The princess of the provinces has become a slave.
Her
filthiness is in her skirts; she remembereth not her last end; therefore she came down wonderfully: she had no comforter. O LORD, behold my
affliction: for the enemy hath
magnified himself.
Her uncleanness stains her skirts; she did not consider her end. Her
downfall was astounding; there
was no one to comfort her. Look, O LORD, on my
affliction, for the enemy has triumphed!
Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me,
wherewith the LORD hath
afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger.
Is this nothing to you, all you who pass by? Look around and see! Is there any sorrow like mine, which was inflicted on me, which the LORD made me suffer on the day of His fierce anger?
The Lord
was as an enemy: he hath
swallowed up Israel, he hath
swallowed up all her palaces: he hath destroyed his strong holds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah
mourning and
lamentation.
The Lord is like an enemy; He has
swallowed up Israel. He has
swallowed up all her palaces and destroyed her strongholds. He has multiplied
mourning and
lamentation for the Daughter of Judah.
And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden: he hath destroyed his places of the assembly: the LORD hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in
Zion, and hath
despised in the
indignation of his anger the king and the priest.
He has laid
waste His tabernacle like a garden
booth; He has destroyed His place of meeting. The LORD has made
Zion forget her appointed feasts and Sabbaths. In His fierce anger He has
despised both king and priest.
The LORD hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of
Zion: he hath stretched out a line, he hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying: therefore he made the
rampart and the wall to
lament; they
languished together.
The LORD determined to destroy the wall of the Daughter of
Zion. He stretched out a measuring line and did not withdraw His hand from destroying. He made the ramparts and walls
lament; together they
waste away.
They say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? when they
swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul
was poured out into their mothers’
bosom.
They cry out to their mothers: “Where is the grain and wine?” as they
faint like the wounded in the streets of the city, as their lives
fade away in the arms of their mothers.
All that pass by
clap their hands at thee; they hiss and
wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?
All who pass by
clap their hands at you in
scorn. They hiss and
shake their heads at the Daughter of Jerusalem: “Is this the city that
was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?”
He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.
He is a bear lying in wait, a lion hiding in
ambush.
I
was a
derision to all my people; and their song all the day.
Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.
The waters flowed over my head, and I thought I was going to die.
For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of
Sodom, that
was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her.
The punishment of the daughter of my people is greater than that of
Sodom, which
was overthrown in an instant without a hand turned to help her.
Her
dignitaries were brighter than snow, whiter than milk; their bodies were more
ruddy than
rubies, their appearance like sapphires.
They that be slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger: for these pine away,
stricken through for want of the fruits of the field.
Those slain by the sword are better off than those who die of hunger, who waste away, pierced with pain because the fields lack produce.
For the sins of her prophets, and the
iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her,
But this was for the sins of her prophets and the guilt of her priests, who shed the blood of the righteous in her midst.
They
cried unto them, Depart ye; it is unclean; depart, depart, touch not: when they fled away and
wandered, they said among the heathen, They shall no more
sojourn there.
