And, lo, it
was all grown over with thorns, and
nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof
was broken down.
Thorns had grown up everywhere, thistles had covered the ground, and the stone wall was broken down.
So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in
sport?
so is the man who deceives his
neighbor and says, “I
was only
joking!”
There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet is not
washed from their
filthiness.
There is a generation of those who are pure in their own eyes and yet unwashed of their
filth.
Is there any thing
whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which
was before us.
Is there a case where one can say, “Look, this is new”? It has already existed in the ages before us.
I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet
acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what
was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
I sought to
cheer my body with wine and to embrace folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom—until I could see what
was worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.
So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
So I became great and surpassed all in Jerusalem who had preceded me; and my wisdom remained with me.
And
whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I
withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart
rejoiced in all my labour: and this
was my portion of all my labour.
Anything my eyes desired, I did not deny myself. I refused my heart no pleasure. For my heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor.
Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all
was vanity and
vexation of spirit, and there
was no profit under the sun.
Yet when I considered all the works that my hands had accomplished and what I had
toiled to
achieve, I found everything to be
futile, a pursuit of the wind; there
was nothing to be gained under the sun.
Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the
fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why
was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.
So I said to myself, “The fate of the
fool will also
befall me. What then have I gained by being wise?” And I said to myself that this too is
futile.
Therefore I
hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is
grievous unto me: for all is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
So I
hated life, because the work that is done under the sun
was grievous to me. For everything is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.
Nothing is better for a man than to eat and drink and enjoy his work. I have also seen that this is from the hand of God.
And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there.
Furthermore, I saw under the sun that in the place of judgment there is wickedness, and in the place of righteousness there is wickedness.
So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were
oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there
was power; but they had no comforter.
Again I looked, and I considered all the oppression taking place under the sun. I saw the tears of the
oppressed, and they had no comforter; the power lay in the hands of their oppressors, and there
was no comforter.
For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.
For the youth has come from the prison to the
kingship, though he
was born poor in his own kingdom.
Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it
was an error: wherefore should God be
angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?
Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, and do not tell the
messenger that your
vow was a mistake. Why should God be
angry with your words and destroy the work of your hands?
That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he
contend with him that is mightier than he.
Whatever exists
was named long ago, and what happens to a man is
foreknown; but he cannot
contend with one stronger than he.
All this have I proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise; but it was far from me.
All this I tested by wisdom, saying, “I
resolve to be wise.” But it
was beyond me.
Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found.
While my soul was still searching but not finding, among a thousand I have found one upright man, but among all these I have not found one such woman.
This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:
I have also seen this wisdom under the sun, and it was great to me:
There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:
There was a small city with few men. A mighty king came against it, surrounded it, and built large siege ramps against it.
Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.
Now a poor wise man was found in the city, and he saved the city by his wisdom. Yet no one remembered that poor man.
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.
before the dust returns to the ground from which it came and the spirit returns to God who gave it.
And moreover, because the preacher
was wise, he still taught the people knowledge;
yea, he gave good
heed, and sought out, and set in order many
proverbs.
Not only
was the Teacher wise, but he also taught the people knowledge; he
pondered, searched out, and arranged many
proverbs.
The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.
The Teacher searched to find delightful sayings and to record accurate words of truth.
While the king sitteth at his table, my
spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.
As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest is my beloved among the young men. I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my taste.
He has brought me to the house of wine, and his
banner over me is love.
It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother’s house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.
I had just passed them when I found the one I love. I held him and would not let go until I had brought him to my mother’s house, to the chamber of the one who conceived me.
Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even
shorn, which came up from the
washing;
whereof every one bear twins, and none is barren among them.
Your teeth are like a flock of newly
shorn sheep coming up from the
washing; each has its
twin, and not one of them is lost.
I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have
washed my feet; how shall I
defile them?
I have taken off my
robe— must I put it back on? I have
washed my feet— must I soil them again?
I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
I opened for my beloved, but he had turned and gone. My heart
sank at his departure. I sought him, but did not find him. I called, but he did not answer.
His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of waters, washed with milk, and fitly set.
His eyes are like doves beside the streams of water, bathed in milk and mounted like jewels.
Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the
washing,
whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them.
Your teeth are like a flock of sheep coming up from the
washing; each has its
twin, and not one of them is lost.
Or ever I
was aware, my soul made me like the
chariots of Amminadib.
Before I realized it, my desire had set me among the royal
chariots of my people.
I am a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that found favour.
I am a wall, and my breasts are like towers. So I have become in his eyes like one who brings peace.
Solomon had a
vineyard at
Baal-
hamon; he let out the
vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof
was to bring a thousand pieces of silver.
Solomon had a
vineyard in
Baal-
hamon. He
leased it to the tenants. For its fruit, each
was to bring a thousand shekels of silver.
Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
How is the faithful city become an
harlot! it
was full of judgment; righteousness
lodged in it; but now murderers.
See how the faithful city has become a
harlot! She once
was full of justice; righteousness resided within her, but now only murderers!
The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
This is the message that was revealed to Isaiah son of Amoz concerning Judah and Jerusalem:
When the Lord shall have
washed away the
filth of the daughters of
Zion, and shall have
purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.
when the Lord has
washed away the
filth of the daughters of
Zion and
cleansed the bloodstains from the heart of Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire.
And he
fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.
He
dug it up and cleared the stones and planted the finest vines. He built a
watchtower in the middle and
dug out a winepress as well. He waited for the
vineyard to yield good grapes, but the fruit it produced
was sour!
And I will lay it
waste: it shall not be
pruned, nor
digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.
I will make it a
wasteland, neither
pruned nor cultivated, and thorns and briers will grow up. I will command the clouds that rain shall not fall on it.”
Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.
Lambs will
graze as in their own pastures, and strangers will feed in the ruins of the wealthy.
And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that
cried, and the house
was filled with smoke.
At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds
shook, and the temple
was filled with smoke.
Then
flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the
tongs from off the altar:
Then said I, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until the cities be
wasted without inhabitant, and the houses without man, and the land be utterly
desolate,
Then I asked: “How long, O Lord?” And He replied: “Until the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left unoccupied and the land is
desolate and
ravaged,
And it came to pass in the days of
Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it.
Now in the days that
Ahaz son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah,
was king of Judah, Rezin king of
Aram marched up to
wage war against Jerusalem. He
was accompanied by Pekah son of Remaliah the king of Israel, but he could not overpower the city.
And it
was told the house of David, saying, Syria is
confederate with Ephraim. And his heart
was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind.
When it
was reported to the house of David that
Aram was in league with Ephraim, the hearts of
Ahaz and his people
trembled like trees in the forest
shaken by the wind.
For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be
forsaken of both her kings.
For before the boy knows enough to
reject evil and choose good, the land of the two kings you
dread will be laid
waste.
Nevertheless, there will be no more
gloom for those in distress. In the past He humbled the land of
Zebulun and the land of
Naphtali, but in the future He will honor the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the nations:
And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there
was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or
peeped.
My hand reached as into a nest to seize the wealth of the nations. Like one gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth. No wing
fluttered, no
beak opened or
chirped.’”
Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones
leanness; and under his glory he shall
kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.
Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts will send a
wasting disease among Assyria’s
stout warriors, and under his
pomp will be
kindled a fire like a burning flame.
And the LORD of hosts shall
stir up a
scourge for him according to the slaughter of
Midian at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod
was upon the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt.
And the LORD of Hosts will
brandish a
whip against them, as when He struck
Midian at the rock of Oreb. He will raise His staff over the sea, as He did in Egypt.
And there shall be an
highway for the
remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it
was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.
There will be a
highway for the
remnant of His people who remain from Assyria, as there
was for Israel when they came up from the land of Egypt.
And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou
wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.
In that day you will say: “O LORD, I will praise You. Although You were
angry with me, Your anger has turned away, and You have comforted me.
And it shall come to pass in the day that the LORD shall give thee rest from thy sorrow, and from thy fear, and from the hard
bondage wherein thou
wast made to serve,
On the day that the LORD gives you rest from your pain and
torment, and from the hard labor into which you were forced,
In the year that king
Ahaz died
was this burden.
In the year that King
Ahaz died, this burden
was received:
The burden of Moab. Because in the night Ar of Moab is laid waste, and brought to silence; because in the night Kir of Moab is laid waste, and brought to silence;
This is the burden against Moab: Ar in Moab is ruined, destroyed in a night! Kir in Moab is
devastated, destroyed in a night!
And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax
lean.
“In that day the
splendor of Jacob will
fade, and the fat of his body will
waste away,
And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be wasted and dried up.
The waters of the Nile will dry up, and the riverbed will be
parched and empty.
Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.
Therefore my body is filled with
anguish. Pain grips me, like the pains of a woman in labor. I am
bewildered to hear, I am dismayed to see.
The inhabitants of the land of Tema brought water to him that
was thirsty, they prevented with their bread him that fled.
Bring water for the
thirsty, O dwellers of Tema; meet the refugees with food.
And it
was revealed in mine ears by the LORD of hosts, Surely this iniquity shall not be
purged from you till ye die, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.
The LORD of Hosts has revealed in my hearing: “Until your dying day, this sin of yours will never be
atoned for,” says the Lord GOD of Hosts.
In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall the
nail that is fastened in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that
was upon it shall be cut off: for the LORD hath spoken it.
In that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, the
peg driven into a firm place will give way; it will be
sheared off and fall, and the load upon it will be cut down.” Indeed, the LORD has spoken.
The burden of Tyre.
Howl, ye ships of
Tarshish; for it is laid
waste, so that there is no house, no entering in: from the land of
Chittim it is revealed to them.
This is the burden against Tyre:
Wail, O ships of
Tarshish, for Tyre is laid
waste, without house or
harbor. Word has reached them from the land of
Cyprus.
And by great waters the seed of Sihor, the harvest of the river, is her revenue; and she is a
mart of nations.
On the great waters came the grain of Shihor; the harvest of the Nile was the revenue of Tyre; she was the merchant of the nations.
Behold the land of the Chaldeans; this people
was not,
til the Assyrian founded it for them that dwell in the wilderness: they set up the towers thereof, they raised up the palaces thereof; and he brought it to ruin.
Look at the land of the Chaldeans— a people now of no account. The Assyrians destined it for the desert creatures; they set up their siege towers and
stripped its palaces. They brought it to ruin.
Howl, ye ships of
Tarshish: for your strength is laid
waste.
Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it
waste, and turneth it
upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.
Behold, the LORD lays
waste the earth and leaves it in ruins. He will twist its surface and
scatter its inhabitants—
The land shall be utterly
emptied, and utterly
spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word.
The earth will be utterly laid
waste and thoroughly
plundered. For the LORD has spoken this word.
The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the
haughty people of the earth do
languish.
The earth mourns and
withers; the world languishes and fades; the
exalted of the earth
waste away.
LORD, in trouble have they visited thee, they poured out a prayer when thy
chastening was upon them.
O LORD, they sought You in their distress; when You disciplined them, they poured out a quiet prayer.
Hath he
smitten him, as he
smote those that
smote him? or is he slain according to the slaughter of them that are slain by him?
Has the LORD struck Israel as He struck her oppressors? Was she killed like those who slayed her?
But the word of the LORD
was unto them
precept upon
precept,
precept upon
precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little; that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and
snared, and taken.
Then the word of the LORD to them will become: “Order on order, order on order, line on line, line on line; a little here, a little there,” so that they will go
stumbling backward and will be injured, ensnared, and captured.
Woe to you, O destroyer never destroyed, O
traitor never
betrayed! When you have finished destroying, you will be destroyed. When you have finished
betraying, you will be
betrayed.
The
highways lie
waste, the
wayfaring man ceaseth: he hath broken the covenant, he hath
despised the cities, he regardeth no man.
The
highways are deserted; travel has ceased. The treaty has been broken, the witnesses are
despised, and human life is disregarded.
It shall not be
quenched night nor day; the smoke thereof shall go up for ever: from generation to generation it shall lie
waste; none shall pass through it for ever and ever.
It will not be
quenched—day or night. Its smoke will
ascend forever. From generation to generation it will lie
desolate; no one will ever again pass through it.
Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, which
was over the house, and Shebna the
scribe, and Joah,
Asaph’s son, the recorder.
Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace
administrator, Shebna the
scribe, and Joah son of
Asaph the recorder, went out to him.
And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
So now, was it apart from the LORD that I have come up against this land to destroy it? The LORD Himself said to me, ‘Go up against this land and destroy it.’”
But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
But the people remained silent and did not answer a word, for
Hezekiah had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that
was over the household, and Shebna the
scribe, and Joah, the son of
Asaph, the recorder, to
Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of
Rabshakeh.
And he sent Eliakim, who
was over the household, and Shebna the
scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with
sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.
And he sent Eliakim the palace
administrator, Shebna the
scribe, and the leading priests, all wearing
sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz
When the
Rabshakeh heard that the king of Assyria had left
Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against
Libnah.
Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,
Truly, O LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all these countries and their lands.
Hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of ancient times, that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay
waste defenced cities into
ruinous heaps.
Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it; in days of old I
planned it. Now I have brought it to pass, that you should
crush fortified cities into piles of
rubble.
One day, while he
was worshiping in the temple of his god
Nisroch, his sons
Adrammelech and Sharezer put him to the sword and escaped to the land of
Ararat. And his son Esar-haddon reigned in his place.
In those days
was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live.
In those days
Hezekiah became
mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”
And said, Remember now, O LORD, I
beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And
Hezekiah wept sore.
saying, “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and with wholehearted devotion; I have done what
was good in Your sight.” And
Hezekiah wept bitterly.
Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun
dial of
Ahaz, ten degrees backward. So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it
was gone down.
I will make the sun’s shadow that falls on the
stairway of
Ahaz go back ten steps.’” So the
sunlight went back the ten steps it had descended.
The writing of
Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick, and
was recovered of his sickness:
This is a writing by
Hezekiah king of Judah after his illness and recovery:
The LORD was ready to save me: therefore we will sing my songs to the stringed instruments all the days of our life in the house of the LORD.
The LORD will save me; we will play songs on stringed instruments all the days of our lives in the house of the LORD.
At that time Merodach-baladan, the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent letters and a present to
Hezekiah: for he had heard that he had been sick, and
was recovered.
At that time Merodach-baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent letters and a gift to
Hezekiah, for he had heard about
Hezekiah’s illness and recovery.
And
Hezekiah was glad of them, and shewed them the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious
ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that
was found in his treasures: there
was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that
Hezekiah shewed them not.
And
Hezekiah welcomed the envoys
gladly and showed them what
was in his
treasure house—the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil, as well as his entire
armory—all that
was found in his storehouses. There
was nothing in his palace or in all his dominion that
Hezekiah did not show them.
Who hath declared from the beginning, that we may know? and
beforetime, that we may say, He is righteous?
yea, there is none that sheweth,
yea, there is none that declareth,
yea, there is none that heareth your words.
Who has declared this from the beginning, so that we may know, and from times past, so that we may say: ‘He
was right’? No one
announced it, no one
foretold it, no one heard your words.
The first shall say to
Zion, Behold, behold them: and I will give to Jerusalem one that bringeth good
tidings.
I
was the first to tell
Zion: ‘Look, here they are!’ And I gave to Jerusalem a
herald of good news.
For I
beheld, and there
was no man; even among them, and there
was no counsellor, that, when I asked of them, could answer a word.
When I look, there is no one; there is no
counselor among them; when I ask them, they have nothing to say.
I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools.
I will lay
waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation. I will turn the rivers into dry land and
drain the marshes.
The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness’ sake; he will
magnify the law, and make it honourable.
The LORD
was pleased, for the sake of His righteousness, to
magnify His law and make it glorious.
