And of Levi he said, Let thy
Thummim and thy
Urim be with thy holy one, whom thou
didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou
didst strive at the
waters of Meribah;
Concerning Levi he said: “Give Your
Thummim to Levi and Your
Urim to Your godly one, whom You tested at Massah and contested at the
waters of Meribah.
And of Joseph he said, Blessed of the LORD be his land, for the precious things of heaven, for the
dew, and for the deep that coucheth beneath,
Concerning Joseph he said: “May his land be blessed by the LORD with the precious
dew from heaven above and the deep
waters that lie beneath,
For we have heard how the LORD dried up the
water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the
Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and
Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.
For we have heard how the LORD dried up the
waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and
Og, the two kings of the
Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction.
And thou shalt command the priests that bear the ark of the covenant, saying, When ye are come to the
brink of the
water of Jordan, ye shall stand still in Jordan.
Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant: ‘When you reach the edge of the waters, stand in the Jordan.’”
And it shall come to pass, as soon as the soles of the feet of the priests that bear the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the
waters of Jordan, that the
waters of Jordan shall be cut off from the
waters that come down from above; and they shall stand upon an
heap.
When the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD—the Lord of all the earth—touch down in the
waters of the Jordan, its flowing
waters will be cut off and will stand up in a
heap.”
And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were
dipped in the
brim of the
water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,)
Now the Jordan overflows its banks throughout the harvest season. But as soon as the priests carrying the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge,
That the
waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an
heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against
Jericho.
the flowing
water stood still. It backed up as far
upstream as Adam, a city in the area of Zarethan, while the
water flowing toward the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite
Jericho.
Then ye shall answer them, That the
waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan, the
waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a
memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.
you are to tell them, ‘The
waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the
waters were cut off.’ Therefore these stones will be a
memorial to the Israelites
forever.”
And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before.
When the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD came up out of the Jordan and their feet touched the dry land, the waters of the Jordan returned to their course and overflowed all the banks as before.
For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the LORD your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:
For the LORD your God dried up the waters of the Jordan before you until you had crossed over, just as He did to the Red Sea, which He dried up before us until we had crossed over.
And it came to pass, when all the kings of the
Amorites, which were on the side of Jordan westward, and all the kings of the
Canaanites, which were by the sea, heard that the LORD had dried up the
waters of Jordan from before the children of Israel, until we were passed over, that their heart melted, neither was there spirit in them any more, because of the children of Israel.
Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the
Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the
waters of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and their spirits failed for fear of the Israelites.
And the men of
Ai smote of them about thirty and six men: for they
chased them from before the gate even unto Shebarim, and
smote them in the going down: wherefore the hearts of the people melted, and became as
water.
And the men of
Ai struck down about thirty-six of them,
chasing them from the gate as far as the
quarries and striking them down on the slopes. So the hearts of the people melted and became like
water.
And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.
They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the whole congregation.” So the leaders kept their promise.
Now therefore ye are
cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being
bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of
water for the house of my God.
Now therefore you are under a
curse and will perpetually serve as woodcutters and
water carriers for the house of my God.”
And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.
On that day he made them woodcutters and water carriers, as they are to this day for the congregation of the LORD and for the altar at the place He would choose.
And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the
waters of
Merom, to fight against Israel.
All these kings joined forces and
encamped at the
waters of
Merom to fight against Israel.
So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the
waters of
Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.
So by the
waters of
Merom, Joshua and his whole army came upon them suddenly and attacked them,
And the border went up toward Debir from the valley of
Achor, and so northward, looking toward
Gilgal, that is before the going up to Adummim, which is on the south side of the river: and the border passed toward the
waters of En-shemesh, and the goings out thereof were at En-rogel:
Then the border went up to Debir from the Valley of
Achor, turning north to
Gilgal, which faces the
Ascent of Adummim south of the
ravine. It continued along the
waters of En-shemesh and came out at En-rogel.
And the border was drawn from the top of the hill unto the fountain of the water of Nephtoah, and went out to the cities of mount Ephron; and the border was drawn to Baalah, which is Kirjath-jearim:
From the
hilltop the border curved to the spring of the
Waters of Nephtoah, proceeded to the cities of Mount Ephron, and then bent around toward Baalah (that is, Kiriath-jearim).
Who answered, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of
water. And he gave her the upper springs, and the
nether springs.
“Give me a blessing,” she answered. “Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of
water as well.” So
Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.
And the lot of the children of Joseph fell from Jordan by
Jericho, unto the
water of
Jericho on the east, to the wilderness that goeth up from
Jericho throughout mount
Bethel,
The
allotment for the descendants of Joseph extended from the Jordan at
Jericho to the
waters of
Jericho on the east, through the wilderness that goes up from
Jericho into the hill country of
Bethel.
And the south quarter was from the end of Kirjath-jearim, and the border went out on the west, and went out to the well of waters of Nephtoah:
On the south side the border began at the outskirts of Kiriath-jearim and extended westward to the spring at the Waters of Nephtoah.
And she said unto him, Give me a blessing: for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of
water. And
Caleb gave her the upper springs and the
nether springs.
“Give me a blessing,” she answered. “Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me springs of
water as well.” So
Caleb gave her both the upper and lower springs.
And he said unto her, Give me, I pray thee, a little
water to drink; for I am
thirsty. And she opened a
bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.
Sisera said to her, “Please give me a little
water to drink, for I am
thirsty.” So she opened a container of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him again.
LORD, when thou wentest out of
Seir, when thou marchedst out of the field of
Edom, the earth
trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped
water.
O LORD, when You went out from
Seir, when You marched from the land of
Edom, the earth
trembled, the heavens poured out rain, and the clouds poured down
water.
They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing
water, there shall they
rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates.
the voices of the singers at the watering places. There they shall recount the righteous acts of the LORD, the righteous deeds of His villagers in Israel. Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates:
The kings came and fought, then fought the kings of
Canaan in Taanach by the
waters of
Megiddo; they took no gain of money.
Kings came and fought; then the kings of
Canaan fought at Taanach by the
waters of
Megiddo, but they took no
plunder of silver.
He asked
water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly
dish.
He asked for
water, and she gave him milk. In a magnificent
bowl she brought him curds.
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the
water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of
whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “There are still too many people. Take them down to the
water, and I will
sift them for you there. If I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go. But if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
So he brought down the people unto the
water: and the LORD said unto
Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the
water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
So
Gideon brought the people down to the
water, and the LORD said to him, “Separate those who
lap the
water with their tongues like a dog from those who
kneel to drink.”
And the number of them that
lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink
water.
And the number of those who
lapped the
water with their hands to their mouths was three hundred men; all the others
knelt to drink.
And the LORD said unto
Gideon, By the three hundred men that
lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.
Then the LORD said to
Gideon, “With the three hundred men who
lapped the
water I will save you and deliver the Midianites into your hand. But all the others are to go home.”
And
Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and take before them the
waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the
waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan.
Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim to say, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the
waters of the Jordan
ahead of them as far as Beth-barah.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they captured the
waters of the Jordan as far as Beth-barah.
But God
clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and there came
water thereout; and when he had
drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore he called the name thereof En-hakkore, which is in Lehi unto this day.
So God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and
water came out of it. When
Samson drank, his strength returned, and he was revived. That is why he named it En-hakkore, and it remains in Lehi to this day.
And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew
water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have
sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh.
When they had gathered at
Mizpah, they drew
water and poured it out before the LORD. On that day they fasted, and there they
confessed, “We have
sinned against the LORD.” And Samuel judged the Israelites at
Mizpah.
And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw
water, and said unto them, Is the
seer here?
And as they were
climbing the hill to the city, they met some young women coming out to draw
water and asked, “Is the
seer here?”
Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be?
Why should I take my bread and water and the meat I have slaughtered for my shearers, and give them to these men whose origin I do not know?”
The LORD
forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORD’S
anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the
spear that is at his
bolster, and the
cruse of
water, and let us go.
But the LORD
forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the LORD’s
anointed. Instead, take the
spear and
water jug by his head, and let us go.”
So David took the
spear and the
cruse of
water from Saul’s
bolster; and they
gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither
awaked: for they were all
asleep; because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen upon them.
So David took the
spear and
water jug by Saul’s head, and they departed. No one saw them or knew about it, nor did
anyone wake up; they all remained
asleep, because a deep sleep from the LORD had fallen on them.
This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD’S
anointed. And now see where the king’s
spear is, and the
cruse of
water that was at his
bolster.
This thing you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, all of you deserve to die, since you did not protect your lord, the LORD’s
anointed. Now look around. Where are the king’s
spear and
water jug that were by his head?”
And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and they made him drink water;
Now his men found an Egyptian in the field and brought him to David. They gave the man water to drink and food to eat—
And they gave him a piece of a
cake of figs, and two clusters of
raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor
drunk any
water, three days and three nights.
a piece of a fig
cake and two clusters of
raisins. So he
ate and was revived, for he had not had any food or
water for three days and three nights.
And David said on that day,
Whosoever getteth up to the
gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the
lame and the blind, that are
hated of David’s soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the
lame shall not come into the house.
On that day he said, “
Whoever attacks the Jebusites must use the
water shaft to reach the
lame and blind who are
despised by David.” That is why it is said, “The blind and the
lame will never enter the palace.”
And David came to
Baal-perazim, and David
smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of
waters. Therefore he called the name of that place
Baal-perazim.
So David went to
Baal-perazim, where he defeated the Philistines and said, “Like a
bursting flood, the LORD has
burst out against my enemies before me.” So he called that place
Baal-perazim.
And
Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah, and have taken the city of
waters.
Then
Joab sent messengers to David to say, “I have fought against Rabbah and have captured the
water supply of the city.
For we must needs die, and are as
water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither
doth God respect any person: yet
doth he
devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him.
For surely we will die and be like water poured out on the ground, which cannot be recovered. Yet God does not take away a life; but He devises ways that the banished one may not be cast out from Him.
And when
Absalom’s servants came to the woman to the house, they said, Where is
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, They be gone over the
brook of
water. And when they had sought and could not find them, they returned to Jerusalem.
When
Absalom’s servants came to the woman at the house, they asked, “Where are
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan?” “They have crossed over the
brook,” she replied. The men searched but did not find them, so they returned to Jerusalem.
And it came to pass, after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, and went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, and pass quickly over the
water: for thus hath
Ahithophel counselled against you.
After the men had gone,
Ahimaaz and
Jonathan climbed up out of the well and went to inform King David, saying, “Get up and cross over the river at once, for
Ahithophel has given this advice against you.”
And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took
sackcloth, and spread it for her upon the rock, from the beginning of harvest until
water dropped upon them out of heaven, and suffered neither the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
And Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took
sackcloth and spread it out for herself on a rock. From the beginning of the harvest until the rain from heaven poured down on the bodies, she did not allow the birds of the air to rest on them by day, nor the beasts of the field by night.
And he made darkness pavilions round about him, dark
waters, and thick clouds of the
skies.
He made darkness a
canopy around Him, a gathering of
water and thick clouds.
He sent from above, he took me; he drew me out of many waters;
He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters.
And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the
water of the well of
Bethlehem, which is by the gate!
David longed for
water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of
water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem!”
And the three mighty men
brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew
water out of the well of
Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD.
So the three mighty men broke through the
Philistine camp, drew
water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
And the man of God said unto the king, If thou
wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink
water in this place:
But the man of God replied, “If you were to give me half your possessions, I still would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water in this place.
For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.
For this is what I was commanded by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’”
And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:
But the man replied, “I cannot return with you or eat bread or drink water with you in this place.
For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.
For I have been told by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat bread or drink water there or return by the way you came.’”
He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink
water. But he
lied unto him.
Then the prophet replied, “I too am a prophet like you, and an angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD, saying, ‘Bring him back with you to your house, so that he may eat bread and drink water.’” The old prophet was lying to him,
So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and
drank water.
but the man of God went back with him,
ate bread in his house, and
drank water.
But camest back, and hast eaten bread and
drunk water in the place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no
water; thy
carcase shall not come unto the
sepulchre of thy fathers.
but you went back and
ate bread and
drank water in the place where He told you not to do so, your body shall never reach the tomb of your fathers.’”
For the LORD shall
smite Israel, as a reed is
shaken in the
water, and he shall root up Israel out of this good land, which he gave to their fathers, and shall
scatter them beyond the river, because they have made their groves,
provoking the LORD to anger.
For the LORD will strike Israel as a reed is
shaken in the
water. He will
uproot Israel from this good land that He gave their fathers, and He will
scatter them beyond the Euphrates, because they have made their Asherah poles,
provoking the LORD to anger.
So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said,
Fetch me, I pray thee, a little
water in a vessel, that I may drink.
So
Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived at the city gate, there was a widow gathering sticks.
Elijah called to her and said, “Please bring me a little
water in a cup, so that I may drink.”
For it was so, when
Jezebel cut off the prophets of the LORD, that
Obadiah took an hundred prophets, and
hid them by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and
water.)
for when
Jezebel had slaughtered the prophets of the LORD,
Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty men per cave, providing them with food and
water.)
And
Ahab said unto
Obadiah, Go into the land, unto all fountains of
water, and unto all
brooks:
peradventure we may find grass to save the horses and mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.
Then
Ahab said to
Obadiah, “Go throughout the land to every spring and every valley. Perhaps we will find grass to keep the horses and mules alive so that we will not have to destroy any
livestock.”
Was it not told my lord what I did when
Jezebel slew the prophets of the LORD, how I
hid an hundred men of the LORD’S prophets by fifty in a cave, and fed them with bread and
water?
Was it not reported to my lord what I did when
Jezebel slaughtered the prophets of the LORD? I
hid a hundred prophets of the LORD, fifty men per cave, and I provided them with food and
water.
And he put the wood in order, and cut the
bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and said, Fill four barrels with
water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice, and on the wood.
Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull, placed it on the wood,
And he said, Do it the second time. And they did it the second time. And he said, Do it the third time. And they did it the third time.
and said, “Fill four waterpots and pour the water on the offering and on the wood.” “Do it a second time,” he said, and they did it a second time. “Do it a third time,” he said, and they did it a third time.
And the
water ran round about the altar; and he filled the
trench also with
water.
So the
water ran down around the altar and even filled the
trench.
Then the fire of the LORD fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and
licked up the
water that was in the
trench.
Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it
licked up the
water in the
trench.
And he looked, and, behold, there was a
cake baken on the coals, and a
cruse of
water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.
And he looked around, and there by his head was a
cake of bread
baked over hot coals, and a
jar of
water. So he
ate and
drank and lay down again.
And say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of
affliction and with
water of
affliction, until I come in peace.
and tell them that this is what the king says: ‘Put this man in prison and feed him only bread and water until I return safely.’”
And
Elijah took his
mantle, and
wrapped it together, and
smote the
waters, and they were divided
hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
And
Elijah took his
cloak, rolled it up, and struck the
waters, which parted to the right and to the left, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.
And he took the
mantle of
Elijah that fell from him, and
smote the
waters, and said, Where is the LORD God of
Elijah? and when he also had
smitten the
waters, they parted
hither and thither: and
Elisha went over.
Then he took the
cloak of
Elijah that had fallen from him and struck the
waters. “Where now is the LORD, the God of
Elijah?” he asked. And when he had struck the
waters, they parted to the right and to the left, and
Elisha crossed over.
And the men of the city said unto
Elisha, Behold, I pray thee, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord
seeth: but the
water is
naught, and the ground barren.
Then the men of the city said to
Elisha, “Please note, our lord, that the city’s
location is good, as you can see. But the
water is bad and the land is unfruitful.”
And he went forth unto the spring of the
waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I have
healed these
waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land.
and
Elisha went out to the spring, cast the salt into it, and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘I have
healed this
water. No longer will it cause death or unfruitfulness.’”
So the
waters were
healed unto this day, according to the saying of
Elisha which he spake.
And the
waters there have been healthy to this day, according to the word spoken by
Elisha.
So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of
Edom: and they
fetched a compass of seven days’ journey: and there was no
water for the host, and for the cattle that followed them.
So the king of Israel, the king of Judah, and the king of
Edom set out, and after they had traveled a
roundabout route for seven days, they had no
water for their army or for their animals.
But
Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may
enquire of the LORD by him? And one of the king of Israel’s servants answered and said, Here is
Elisha the son of Shaphat, which poured
water on the hands of
Elijah.
But
Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the LORD here? Let us inquire of the LORD through him.” And one of the servants of the king of Israel answered, “
Elisha son of Shaphat is here. He used to pour
water on the hands of
Elijah.”
For thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.
For the LORD says, ‘You will not see wind or rain, but the valley will be filled with water, and you will drink—you and your cattle and your animals.’
And ye shall
smite every
fenced city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all wells of
water, and
mar every good piece of land with stones.
And you shall attack every fortified city and every city of importance. You shall cut down every good tree, stop up every spring, and ruin every good field with stones.”
And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came
water by the way of
Edom, and the country was filled with
water.
The next morning, at the time of the morning sacrifice,
water suddenly flowed from the direction of
Edom and filled the land.
And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun
shone upon the
water, and the Moabites saw the
water on the other side as red as blood:
When they got up early in the morning, the sun was
shining on the
water, and it looked as red as blood to the Moabites across the way.
And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of
water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kir-haraseth left they the stones thereof;
howbeit the slingers went about it, and
smote it.
They destroyed the cities, and each man threw stones on every good field until it was covered. They stopped up every spring and cut down every good tree. Only Kir-haraseth was left with stones in place, but men with
slings surrounded it and attacked it as well.
Are not
Abana and
Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the
waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a
rage.
Are not the Abanah and
Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, better than all the
waters of Israel? Could I not have washed in them and been
cleansed?” So he turned and went away in a
rage.
But as one was felling a beam, the
axe head fell into the
water: and he
cried, and said,
Alas, master! for it was borrowed.
As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron
axe head fell into the
water. “Oh, my master,” he
cried out, “it was borrowed!”
And he answered, Thou shalt not
smite them: wouldest thou
smite those whom thou hast taken
captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and
water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.
“Do not kill them,” he replied. “Would you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow? Set food and water before them, that they may eat and drink and then return to their master.”
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that he took a thick cloth, and
dipped it in
water, and spread it on his face, so that he died: and
Hazael reigned in his
stead.
But the next day
Hazael took a thick cloth,
dipped it in
water, and spread it over the king’s face. So Ben-
hadad died, and
Hazael reigned in his place.
Hearken not to
Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the
waters of his
cistern:
Do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and drink
water from his own
cistern,
I have
digged and
drunk strange
waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places.
I have
dug wells and
drunk foreign
waters. With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt.”
And the rest of the acts of
Hezekiah, and all his might, and how he made a
pool, and a
conduit, and brought
water into the city, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?
As for the rest of the acts of
Hezekiah, along with all his might and how he constructed the
pool and the
tunnel to bring
water into the city, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me drink of the
water of the well of
Bethlehem, that is at the gate!
David longed for
water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of
water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem!”
And the three
brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew
water out of the well of
Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD,
So the Three broke through the
Philistine camp, drew
water from the well at the gate of
Bethlehem, and brought it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
So they came up to
Baal-perazim; and David
smote them there. Then David said, God hath broken in upon mine enemies by mine hand like the breaking forth of
waters: therefore they called the name of that place
Baal-perazim.
So David and his men went up to
Baal-perazim, where he defeated the Philistines and said, “Like a
bursting flood, God has
burst out against my enemies by my hand.” So they called that place
Baal-perazim.
And say, Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, and feed him with bread of
affliction and with
water of
affliction, until I return in peace.
and tell them that this is what the king says: ‘Put this man in prison and feed him only bread and water until I return safely.’”
He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.
he consulted with his leaders and commanders about
stopping up the
waters of the springs outside the city, and they helped him carry it out.
So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the
brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much
water?
Many people assembled and stopped up all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land. “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find
plenty of
water?” they said.
This same
Hezekiah also stopped the upper
watercourse of
Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And
Hezekiah prospered in all his works.
It was
Hezekiah who blocked the upper outlet of the Spring of
Gihon and channeled it down to the west side of the City of David. And
Hezekiah prospered in all that he did.
Then
Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink
water: for he
mourned because of the
transgression of them that had been carried away.
Then
Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and walked to the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. And while he stayed there, he
ate no food and
drank no
water, because he was
mourning over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
Moreover the
Nethinims dwelt in Ophel, unto the place over against the
water gate toward the east, and the tower that lieth out.
and the temple servants living on the hill of Ophel made repairs opposite the Water Gate toward the east and the tower that juts out.
