Say ye not, A
confederacy, to all them to whom this people shall say, A
confederacy; neither fear ye their fear, nor be afraid.
And he shall
snatch on the right hand, and be
hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:
They
carve out
what is on the right, but they are still
hungry; they eat
what is on the left, but they are still not satisfied. Each one devours the flesh of his own offspring.
And
what will ye do in the day of
visitation, and in the
desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye
flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?
What will you do on the day of
reckoning when
devastation comes from
afar? To whom will you
flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth?
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwellest in
Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall
smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.
Therefore this is
what the Lord GOD of Hosts says: “O My people who dwell in
Zion, do not fear Assyria, who strikes you with a rod and lifts his staff against you as the Egyptians did.
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
And He will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what His eyes see, and He will not decide by what His ears hear,
What shall one then answer the messengers of the nation? That the LORD hath founded
Zion, and the poor of his people shall trust in it.
What answer will be given to the envoys of that nation? “The LORD has founded
Zion, where His
afflicted people will find refuge.”
For so the LORD said unto me, I will take my rest, and I will consider in my dwelling place like a clear heat upon herbs, and like a cloud of
dew in the heat of harvest.
For this is
what the LORD has told me: “I will quietly look on from My dwelling place, like
shimmering heat in the
sunshine, like a cloud of
dew in the heat of harvest.”
Where are they? where are thy wise men? and let them tell thee now, and let them know what the LORD of hosts hath purposed upon Egypt.
Where are your wise men now? Let them tell you and
reveal what the LORD of Hosts has
planned against Egypt.
And the land of Judah shall be a terror unto Egypt, every one that maketh mention thereof shall be afraid in himself, because of the counsel of the LORD of hosts, which he hath determined against it.
The land of Judah will bring terror to Egypt; whenever Judah is mentioned, Egypt will
tremble over
what the LORD of Hosts has
planned against it.
And the inhabitant of this isle shall say in that day, Behold, such is our expectation,
whither we
flee for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria: and how shall we escape?
And on that day the dwellers of this coastland will say, ‘See
what has happened to our source of hope, those to whom we fled for help and
deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?’”
For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Go, set a
watchman, let him declare
what he
seeth.
For this is
what the Lord says to me: “Go, post a
lookout and have him report
what he sees.
O my
threshing, and the corn of my floor: that which I have heard of the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, have I declared unto you.
O my people,
crushed on the
threshing floor, I tell you
what I have heard from the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel.
The burden of Dumah. He calleth to me out of
Seir,
Watchman,
what of the night?
Watchman,
what of the night?
This is the burden against Dumah: One calls to me from
Seir, “
Watchman,
what is left of the night?
Watchman,
what is left of the night?”
For thus hath the Lord said unto me, Within a year, according to the years of an
hireling, and all the glory of
Kedar shall fail:
For this is
what the Lord says to me: “Within one year, as a
hired worker would count it, all the glory of
Kedar will be gone.
The burden of the valley of vision. What aileth thee now, that thou art wholly gone up to the housetops?
This is the burden against the Valley of Vision: What ails you now, that you have all gone up to the rooftops,
Thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, Go, get thee unto this
treasurer, even unto Shebna, which is over the house, and say,
This is
what the Lord GOD of Hosts says: “Go, say to Shebna, the
steward in charge of the palace:
What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast
hewed thee out a
sepulchre here, as he that heweth him out a
sepulchre on high, and that graveth an
habitation for himself in a rock?
What are you doing here, and who authorized you to
carve out a tomb for
yourself here—to
chisel your tomb in the height and cut your resting place in the rock?
And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in
Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make
haste.
So this is
what the Lord GOD says: “See, I lay a stone in
Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; the one who believes will never be
shaken.
Give ye ear, and hear my voice;
hearken, and hear my speech.
Listen and hear my voice. Pay attention and hear
what I say.
Surely your turning of things
upside down shall be esteemed as the
potter’s clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
You have turned things
upside down, as if the
potter were regarded as clay. Shall
what is formed say to him who formed it, “He did not make me”? Can the pottery say of the
potter, “He has no understanding”?
Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye
despise this word, and trust in oppression and
perverseness, and stay
thereon:
Therefore this is
what the Holy One of Israel says: “Because you have rejected this message, trusting in oppression and relying on
deceit,
For thus hath the LORD spoken unto me, Like as the lion and the young lion
roaring on his prey, when a multitude of
shepherds is called forth against him, he will not be afraid of their voice, nor
abase himself for the noise of them: so shall the LORD of hosts come down to fight for mount
Zion, and for the hill thereof.
For this is
what the LORD has said to me: “Like a lion
roaring or a young lion over its prey— and though a band of
shepherds is called out against it, it is not
terrified by their
shouting or subdued by their
clamor— so the LORD of Hosts will come down to do battle on Mount
Zion and its heights.
Hear, ye that are far off, what I have done; and, ye that are near, acknowledge my might.
You who are far off, hear what I have done; you who are near, acknowledge My might.”
And
Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to
Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria,
What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?
The
Rabshakeh said to them, “Tell
Hezekiah that this is
what the great king, the king of Assyria, says:
What is the basis of this confidence of yours?
Thus saith the king, Let not
Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.
This is
what the king says: Do not let
Hezekiah deceive you, for he cannot deliver you.
Hearken not to
Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own
cistern;
Do not
listen to
Hezekiah, for this is
what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and his own fig tree, and drink water from his own
cistern,
And they said unto him, Thus saith
Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of
rebuke, and of
blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
to tell him, “This is
what Hezekiah says:
Today is a day of distress,
rebuke, and disgrace; for children have come to the point of birth, but there is no strength to deliver them.
And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard,
wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed me.
who replied, “Tell your master that this is
what the LORD says: ‘Do not be afraid of the words you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have
blasphemed Me.
Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered?
Surely you have heard
what the kings of Assyria have done to all the other countries,
devoting them to destruction. Will you then be
spared?
Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto
Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against
Sennacherib king of Assyria:
Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to
Hezekiah: “This is
what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Because you have prayed to Me concerning
Sennacherib king of Assyria,
And this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such as groweth of itself; and the second year that which springeth of the same: and in the third year
sow ye, and
reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.
And this will be a sign to you, O
Hezekiah: This year you will eat
what grows on its own, and in the second year
what springs from the same. But in the third year you will
sow and
reap; you will plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an
arrow there nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.
So this is
what the LORD says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city or shoot an
arrow into it. He will not come before it with a shield or build up a siege
ramp against it.
In those days was
Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live.
In those days
Hezekiah became
mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said, “This is
what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”
And said, Remember now, O LORD, I
beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And
Hezekiah wept sore.
saying, “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and with wholehearted devotion; I have done
what was good in Your sight.” And
Hezekiah wept bitterly.
Go, and say to
Hezekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.
“Go and tell
Hezekiah that this is
what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life.
And this shall be a sign unto thee from the LORD, that the LORD will do this thing that he hath spoken;
This will be a sign to you from the LORD that He will do what He has promised:
What shall I say? he hath both spoken unto me, and himself hath done it: I shall go softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.
What can I say? He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done this. I will walk slowly all my years because of the
anguish of my soul.
Hezekiah also had said,
What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of the LORD?
And
Hezekiah had asked, “
What will be the sign that I will go up to the house of the LORD?”
And
Hezekiah was
glad of them, and shewed them the house of his precious things, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious
ointment, and all the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures: there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that
Hezekiah shewed them not.
And
Hezekiah welcomed the envoys
gladly and showed them
what was in his
treasure house—the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil, as well as his entire
armory—all that was found in his storehouses. There was nothing in his palace or in all his dominion that
Hezekiah did not show them.
Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king
Hezekiah, and said unto him,
What said these men? and from whence came they unto thee? And
Hezekiah said, They are come from a far country unto me, even from Babylon.
Then the prophet Isaiah went to King
Hezekiah and asked, “Where did those men come from, and
what did they say to you?” “They came to me from a distant land,”
Hezekiah replied, “from Babylon.”
Then said he,
What have they seen in thine house? And
Hezekiah answered, All that is in mine house have they seen: there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shewed them.
“
What have they seen in your palace?” Isaiah asked. “They have seen everything in my palace,” answered
Hezekiah. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.”
The voice said, Cry. And he said,
What shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all the
goodliness thereof is as the flower of the field:
A voice says, “Cry out!” And I asked, “What should I cry out?” “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flowers of the field.
To whom then will ye
liken God? or
what likeness will ye compare unto him?
To whom will you
liken God? To
what image will you compare Him?
Let them bring them forth, and
shew us
what shall happen: let them
shew the former things,
what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come.
“Let them come and tell us
what will happen. Tell the former things, so that we may
reflect on them and know the outcome. Or
announce to us
what is coming.
Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:
This is what God the LORD says— He who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and its offspring, who gives breath to the people on it and life to those who walk in it:
But now thus saith the LORD that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.
Now this is what the LORD says— He who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine!
And who, as I, shall call, and shall declare it, and set it in order for me, since I appointed the ancient people? and the things that are coming, and shall come, let them
shew unto them.
Who then is like Me? Let him say so! Let him declare his case before Me, since I established an ancient people. Let him
foretell the things to come, and
what is to take place.
Thus saith the LORD to his
anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have
holden, to
subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;
This is
what the LORD says to Cyrus His
anointed, whose right hand I have
grasped to
subdue nations before him, to disarm kings, to open the doors before him, so that the gates will not be shut:
Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the
potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it,
What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?
Woe to him who quarrels with his Maker— one clay pot among many. Does the clay ask the
potter, ‘
What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘He has no hands’?
Woe unto him that saith unto his father,
What begettest thou? or to the woman,
What hast thou brought forth?
Woe to him who says to his father, ‘
What have you
begotten?’ or to his mother, ‘
What have you brought forth?’”
Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and
merchandise of
Ethiopia and of the
Sabeans, men of
stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make
supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God.
This is
what the LORD says: “The products of Egypt and the
merchandise of
Cush, along with the
Sabeans, men of
stature, will come over to you and will be yours; they will
trudge behind you; they will come over in chains and bow down to you. They will
confess to you: ‘God is indeed with you, and there is no other; there is no other God.’”
I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the LORD speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.
I have not spoken in secret, from a place in a land of darkness. I did not say to the descendants of Jacob, ‘Seek Me in a wasteland.’ I, the LORD, speak the truth; I say what is right.
Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,
Remember what happened long ago, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me.
Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:
I declare the end from the beginning, and ancient times from
what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and all My good pleasure I will
accomplish.’
Thus shall they be unto thee with whom thou hast laboured, even thy merchants, from thy youth: they shall
wander every one to his quarter; none shall save thee.
This is what they are to you— those with whom you have labored and traded from youth— each one strays in his own direction; not one of them can save you.
Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to
inherit the
desolate heritages;
This is
what the LORD says: “In the time of favor I will answer You, and in the day of salvation I will help You; I will keep You and
appoint You to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land, to
apportion its
desolate inheritances,
Thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I will lift up mine hand to the Gentiles, and set up my standard to the people: and they shall bring thy sons in their arms, and thy daughters shall be carried upon their shoulders.
This is
what the Lord GOD says: “Behold, I will lift up My hand to the nations, and raise My
banner to the peoples. They will bring your sons in their arms and carry your daughters on their shoulders.
But thus saith the LORD, Even the
captives of the mighty shall be taken away, and the prey of the terrible shall be delivered: for I will
contend with him that contendeth with thee, and I will save thy children.
Thus saith the LORD, Where is the bill of your mother’s
divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your
iniquities have ye sold
yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.
This is
what the LORD says: “Where is your mother’s
certificate of
divorce with which I sent her away? Or to which of My creditors did I sell you? Look, you were sold for your
iniquities, and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.
Behold, all ye that
kindle a fire, that compass
yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have
kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.
Behold, all you who
kindle a fire, who
array yourselves with firebrands, walk in the light of your fire and of the firebrands you have
lit! This is
what you will receive from My hand: You will lie down in a place of
torment.
Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.
Listen to Me, you who know
what is right, you people with My law in your hearts: Do not fear the
scorn of men; do not be broken by their insults.
For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold
yourselves for
nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money.
For this is what the LORD says: “You were sold for nothing, and without money you will be redeemed.”
For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down
aforetime into Egypt to
sojourn there; and the Assyrian
oppressed them without cause.
For this is
what the Lord GOD says: “At first My people went down to Egypt to live, then Assyria
oppressed them without cause.
Now therefore,
what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for
nought? they that rule over them make them to
howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is
blasphemed.
And now
what have I here? declares the LORD. For My people have been taken without cause; those who rule them
taunt, declares the LORD, and My name is
blasphemed continually all day long.
So shall he
sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.
so He will
sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths because of Him. For they will see
what they have not been told, and they will understand
what they have not heard.
Wherefore do ye
spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?
hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
Why
spend money on that which is not bread, and your labor on that which does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat
what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of foods.
So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall
accomplish that which I please, and it shall
prosper in the thing
whereto I sent it.
so My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will
accomplish what I please, and it will
prosper where I send it.
Thus saith the LORD, Keep ye judgment, and do justice: for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed.
This is what the LORD says: “Maintain justice and do what is right, for My salvation is coming soon, and My righteousness will be revealed.
For thus saith the LORD unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant;
For this is what the LORD says: “To the eunuchs who keep My Sabbaths, who choose what pleases Me and hold fast to My covenant—
Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as a nation that did righteousness, and
forsook not the
ordinance of their God: they ask of me the ordinances of justice; they take delight in approaching to God.
For day after day they seek Me and delight to know My ways, like a nation that does
what is right and does not
forsake the justice of their God. They ask Me for righteous judgments; they delight in the nearness of God.”
For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him.
From ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides You, who acts on behalf of those who wait for Him.
Thus saith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the
cluster, and one saith, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it: so will I do for my servants’ sakes, that I may not destroy them all.
This is
what the LORD says: “As the new wine is found in a
cluster of grapes, and men say, ‘Do not destroy it, for it contains a blessing,’ so I will act on behalf of My servants; I will not destroy them all.
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be
hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be
thirsty: behold, my servants shall
rejoice, but ye shall be
ashamed:
Therefore this is
what the Lord GOD says: “My servants will eat, but you will go
hungry; My servants will drink, but you will go
thirsty; My servants will
rejoice, but you will be put to shame.
Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my
footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
This is
what the LORD says: “Heaven is My throne, and earth is My
footstool.
What kind of house will you build for Me? Or where will My place of
repose be?
A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompence to his enemies.
Hear the
uproar from the city;
listen to the voice from the temple! It is the voice of the LORD, repaying His enemies
what they deserve!
For thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream: then shall ye
suck, ye shall be borne upon her sides, and be
dandled upon her knees.
For this is
what the LORD says: “I will extend peace to her like a river, and the wealth of nations like a flowing stream; you will
nurse and be carried on her arm, and
bounced upon her knees.
But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and
whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak.
But the LORD told me: “Do not say, ‘I am only a child.’ For to
everyone I send you, you must go, and all that I command you, you must speak.
Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah,
what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an
almond tree.
And the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “Jeremiah,
what do you see?” “I see a branch of an
almond tree,” I replied.
And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying,
What seest thou? And I said, I see a
seething pot; and the face thereof is toward the north.
Again the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “
What do you see?” “I see a boiling pot,” I replied, “and it is
tilting toward us from the north.”
Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine
espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.
“Go and
proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem that this is
what the LORD says: ‘I remember the devotion of your youth, your love as a
bride, how you followed Me in the wilderness, in a land not sown.
Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?
This is
what the LORD says: “
What fault did your fathers find in Me that they
strayed so far from Me, and followed worthless idols, and became worthless themselves?
And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?
Now what will you gain on your way to Egypt to drink the waters of the Nile? What will you gain on your way to Assyria to drink the waters of the Euphrates?
How canst thou say, I am not
polluted, I have not gone after
Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know
what thou hast done: thou art a swift
dromedary traversing her ways;
“How can you say, ‘I am not
defiled; I have not run after the Baals’? Look at your
behavior in the valley; acknowledge
what you have done. You are a swift young she-
camel galloping here and there,
The LORD said also unto me in the days of
Josiah the king, Hast thou seen that which
backsliding Israel hath done? she is gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree, and there hath played the
harlot.
Now in the days of King
Josiah, the LORD said to me, “Have you seen
what faithless Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every green tree to
prostitute herself there.
For shame hath
devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.
From our youth, that shameful god has consumed what our fathers have worked for— their flocks and herds, their sons and daughters.
For thus saith the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your
fallow ground, and
sow not among thorns.
For this is
what the LORD says to the men of Judah and Jerusalem: “Break up your
unplowed ground, and do not
sow among the thorns.
For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be
desolate; yet will I not make a full end.
For this is
what the LORD says: “The whole land will be
desolate, but I will not finish its destruction.
And when thou art
spoiled,
what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest
thyself with
crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make
thyself fair; thy lovers will
despise thee, they will seek thy life.
Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall
devour them.
Therefore this is what the LORD God of Hosts says: “Because you have spoken this word, I will make My words a fire in your mouth and this people the wood it consumes.
Lo, I will bring a nation upon you from far, O house of Israel, saith the LORD: it is a mighty nation, it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language thou knowest not, neither understandest what they say.
Behold, I am bringing a distant nation against you, O house of Israel,” declares the LORD. “It is an established nation, an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know and whose speech you do not understand.
And it shall come to pass, when ye shall say, Wherefore doeth the LORD our God all these things unto us? then shalt thou answer them, Like as ye have
forsaken me, and served strange gods in your land, so shall ye serve strangers in a land that is not yours.
And when the people ask, ‘For
what offense has the LORD our God done all these things to us?’ You are to tell them, ‘Just as you have
forsaken Me and served foreign gods in your land, so will you serve foreigners in a land that is not your own.’”
The prophets
prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and
what will ye do in the end thereof?
The prophets
prophesy falsely, and the priests rule by their own authority. My people love it so, but
what will you do in the end?
For thus hath the LORD of hosts said,
Hew ye down trees, and cast a mount against Jerusalem: this is the city to be visited; she is wholly oppression in the midst of her.
For this is
what the LORD of Hosts says: “Cut down the trees and raise a siege
ramp against Jerusalem. This city must be punished; there is nothing but oppression in her midst.
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall throughly
glean the
remnant of Israel as a vine: turn back thine hand as a grapegatherer into the baskets.
This is
what the LORD of Hosts says: “
Glean the
remnant of Israel as thoroughly as a vine. Pass your hand once more like a
grape gatherer over the branches.”
Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
This is what the LORD says: “Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths: ‘Where is the good way?’ Then walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it!’
Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them.
Therefore hear, O nations, and learn, O congregations, what will happen to them.
To
what purpose cometh there to me incense from
Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.
What use to Me is
frankincense from
Sheba or sweet cane from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable; your sacrifices do not please Me.”
Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbour and his friend shall perish.
Therefore this is
what the LORD says: “I will lay
stumbling blocks before this people; fathers and sons alike will be
staggered; friends and neighbors will perish.”
