What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
What then shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind. I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.
Else when thou shalt
bless with the spirit, how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say
Amen at thy giving of
thanks, seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest?
Otherwise, if you speak a blessing in spirit, how can someone who is
uninstructed say “
Amen” to your
thanksgiving, since he does not know what you are saying?
I
thank my God, I speak
with tongues more than ye all:
I
thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
But in the church, I would rather speak five
coherent words to
instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.
In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
It is written in the Law: “By strange tongues and foreign lips I will speak to this people, but even then they will not
listen to Me, says the Lord.”
If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak
with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are
mad?
So if the whole church comes together and
everyone speaks in tongues, and some who are
uninstructed or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your minds?
What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?
Did the word of God
originate with you? Or are you the only ones it has reached?
So, my brothers, be eager to
prophesy, and do not
forbid speaking in tongues.
But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me was not in vain. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.
If after the manner of men I have fought
with beasts at Ephesus, what advantageth it me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for to
morrow we die.
If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus for human motives, what did I gain? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for
tomorrow we die.”
But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?
But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?”
So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:
So will it be with the resurrection of the dead: What is sown is perishable; it is raised imperishable.
For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this
mortal must put on immortality.
For the perishable must be clothed
with the imperishable, and the
mortal with immortality.
So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this
mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is
swallowed up in victory.
When the perishable has been clothed
with the imperishable and the
mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come to pass: “Death has been
swallowed up in victory.”
Then, on my arrival, I will send letters
with those you
recommend to carry your gift to Jerusalem.
And if it be meet that I go also, they shall go with me.
And if it is
advisable for me to go also, they can travel
with me.
And it may be that I will
abide,
yea, and winter
with you, that ye may bring me on my journey
whithersoever I go.
Perhaps I will stay
with you
awhile, or even
spend the winter, so that you can help me on my journey, wherever I go.
For I will not see you now by the way; but I trust to
tarry a while
with you, if the Lord permit.
For I do not want to see you now only in passing; I hope to
spend some time
with you, if the Lord permits.
Now if
Timotheus come, see that he may be
with you
without fear: for he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also do.
If
Timothy comes, see to it that he has nothing to fear while he is
with you, for he is doing the work of the Lord, just as I am.
Let no man therefore
despise him: but conduct him forth in peace, that he may come unto me: for I look for him
with the brethren.
No one, then, should treat him with contempt. Send him on his way in peace so that he can return to me, for I am expecting him along with the brothers.
As touching our brother Apollos, I greatly desired him to come unto you with the brethren: but his will was not at all to come at this time; but he will come when he shall have convenient time.
Now about our brother Apollos: I strongly urged him to go to you with the brothers. He was not at all inclined to go now, but he will go when he has the opportunity.
Let all your things be done with charity.
Do everything in love.
That ye submit
yourselves unto such, and to every one that helpeth
with us, and laboureth.
to submit to such as these, and to every fellow worker and laborer.
The churches in the province of Asia send you greetings.
Aquila and Prisca
greet you warmly in the Lord, and so does the church that meets at their house.
All the brothers here send you greetings.
Greet one another
with a holy
kiss.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.
My love be
with you all in Christ Jesus.
Amen.
My love be
with all of you in Christ Jesus.
Amen.
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and
Timothy our brother, unto the church of God which is at Corinth,
with all the saints which are in all
Achaia:
Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and
Timothy our brother, To the church of God in Corinth, together
with all the saints throughout
Achaia:
Who comforteth us in all our
tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort
wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
For our
rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly
sincerity, not
with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.
And this is our
boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in relation to you, in the
holiness and
sincerity that are from God—not in worldly wisdom, but in the grace of God.
When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that
with me there should be
yea yea, and
nay nay?
When I
planned this, did I do it
carelessly? Or do I make my plans by human standards, so as to say “
Yes,
yes” when I really mean “No, no”?
Now he which stablisheth us
with you in Christ, and hath
anointed us, is God;
Now it is God who establishes both us and you in Christ. He
anointed us,
Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.
Not that we lord it over your faith, but we are fellow workers with you for your joy, because it is by faith that you stand firm.
But I determined this
with myself, that I would not come again to you in
heaviness.
So I made up my mind not to make another painful visit to you.
For out of much
affliction and
anguish of heart I wrote unto you
with many tears; not that ye should be
grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you.
For through many tears I wrote you out of great distress and
anguish of heart, not to
grieve you but to let you know how much I love you.
So instead, you ought to
forgive and comfort him, so that he will not be
overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of
sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
For we are not like so many others, who
peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God
with sincerity, as men sent from God.
Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not
with ink, but
with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in
fleshy tables of the heart.
It is clear that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.
But if the
ministration of death, written and
engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not
stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away:
Now if the ministry of death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came
with such glory that the Israelites could not
gaze at the face of Moses because of its fleeting glory,
For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.
For if what was
fading away came
with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which endures!
But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.
And we, who
with unveiled faces all
reflect the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into His image
with intensifying glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;
And in keeping with what is written: “I believed, therefore I have spoken,” we who have the same spirit of faith also believe and therefore speak,
Knowing that he which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise up us also by Jesus, and shall present us with you.
knowing that the One who raised the Lord Jesus will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in His presence.
For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is
dismantled, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.
For in this we
groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon
with our house which is from heaven:
For in this tent we
groan, longing to be clothed
with our heavenly dwelling,
We are
confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present
with the Lord.
We are
confident, then, and would
prefer to be away from the body and at home
with the Lord.
We then, as workers together
with him,
beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.
As God’s fellow workers, then, we
urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain.
By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,
in truthful speech and in the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left;
Be ye not unequally yoked together
with unbelievers: for what
fellowship hath righteousness
with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light
with darkness?
Do not be unequally yoked
with unbelievers. For what
partnership can righteousness have
with wickedness? Or what
fellowship does light have
with darkness?
What harmony is there between Christ and
Belial? Or what does a believer have in common
with an unbeliever?
And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will dwell with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people.”
I speak not this to
condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live
with you.
I do not say this to
condemn you. I have said before that you so occupy our hearts that we live and die together
with you.
Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled
with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our
tribulation.
Great is my confidence in you; great is my pride in you; I am filled with encouragement; in all our troubles my joy overflows.
For, when we were come into
Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side;
without were fightings,
within were fears.
For when we arrived in
Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were pressed from every direction—conflicts on the outside, fears
within.
For though I made you
sorry with a letter, I do not
repent, though I did
repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you
sorry, though it were but for a season.
Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not
regret it. Although I did
regret it, I now see that my letter caused you sorrow, but only for a short time.
For godly sorrow worketh
repentance to salvation not to be
repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.
Godly sorrow brings
repentance that leads to salvation
without regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.
And his inward affection is more abundant toward you, whilst he remembereth the obedience of you all, how
with fear and
trembling ye received him.
And his affection for you is even greater when he remembers that you were all
obedient as you
welcomed him
with fear and
trembling.
Praying us
with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the
fellowship of the ministering to the saints.
they earnestly
pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints.
And we have sent with him the brother, whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches;
Along
with Titus we are sending the brother who is praised by all the churches for his work in the gospel.
And not that only, but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind:
More than that, this brother was chosen by the churches to
accompany us
with the offering—the
gracious gift we
administer to honor the Lord Himself and to show our eagerness to help.
And we have sent
with them our brother, whom we have
oftentimes proved
diligent in many things, but now much more
diligent, upon the great confidence which I have in you.
And we are sending along
with them our brother whose earnestness has been
proven many times and in many ways, and now even more so by his great confidence in you.
Otherwise, if any Macedonians come
with me and find you unprepared, we—to say nothing of you—would be
ashamed of having been so
confident.
Now I Paul myself
beseech you by the
meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:
Now by the mildness and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you—I, Paul, who am humble when face to face with you, but bold when away.
But I
beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present
with that confidence,
wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.
I
beg you that when I come I may not need to be as bold as I expect toward those who
presume that we live according to the flesh.
For we
dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves
with some that
commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
We do not
dare to
classify or compare ourselves
with some who
commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves
with themselves, they show their ignorance.
But we will not
boast of things
without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you.
We, however, will not
boast beyond our limits, but only
within the field of influence that God has assigned to us—a field that reaches even to you.
For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ:
We are not
overstepping our bounds, as if we had not come to you. Indeed, we were the first to reach you
with the gospel of Christ.
Not
boasting of things
without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,
Neither do we
boast beyond our limits in the labors of others. But we hope that as your faith increases, our area of influence among you will greatly increase as well,
Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my folly: and indeed bear with me.
I hope you will bear
with a little of my
foolishness, but you are already doing that.
For I am
jealous over you
with godly jealousy: for I have
espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a
chaste virgin to Christ.
I am
jealous for you
with a godly jealousy. For I promised you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
For if someone comes and proclaims a Jesus other than the One we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit than the One you received, or a different gospel than the one you accepted, you put up with it way too easily.
And when I was present
with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which came from
Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being
burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself.
And when I was
with you and in need, I was not a burden to
anyone; for the brothers who came from
Macedonia supplied my needs. I have
refrained from being a burden to you in any way, and I will continue to do so.
For ye suffer, if a man bring you into
bondage, if a man
devour you, if a man take of you, if a man
exalt himself, if a man
smite you on the face.
In fact, you even put up
with anyone who enslaves you or exploits you or takes advantage of you or exalts himself or strikes you in the face.
Thrice was I beaten
with rods, once was I stoned,
thrice I suffered
shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;
Three times I was beaten
with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was
shipwrecked. I spent a night and a day in the open sea.
In
weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and
thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.
in labor and
toil and often
without sleep, in hunger and
thirst and often
without food, in cold and exposure.
Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.
Apart from these external trials, I face daily the pressure of my
concern for all the churches.
Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is
offended, and I burn not?
Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not burn with grief?
In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes
with a garrison,
desirous to
apprehend me:
In Damascus, the governor under King Aretas secured the city of the Damascenes in order to arrest me.
For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a
fool; for I will say the truth: but now I
forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he
seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.
Even if I wanted to
boast, I would not be a
fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I
refrain, so no one will credit me
with more than he sees in me or hears from me,
For this thing I
besought the Lord
thrice, that it might depart from me.
Three times I
pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me.
Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all
patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.
The true marks of an apostle—signs, wonders, and miracles—were performed among you
with great
perseverance.
But be it so, I did not burden you: nevertheless, being
crafty, I caught you
with guile.
Be that as it may, I was not a burden to you; but
crafty as I am, I caught you by
trickery.
I desired
Titus, and
with him I sent a brother. Did
Titus make a gain of you? walked we not in the same spirit? walked we not in the same steps?
I urged
Titus to visit you, and I sent our brother
with him. Did
Titus exploit you in any way? Did we not walk in the same Spirit and follow in the same footsteps?
I told you before, and
foretell you, as if I were present, the second time; and being absent now I write to them which
heretofore have
sinned, and to all other, that, if I come again, I will not
spare:
Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, which to you-ward is not weak, but is mighty in you.
since you are demanding proof that Christ is speaking through me. He is not weak in dealing with you, but is powerful among you.
For though he was
crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live
with him by the power of God toward you.
For He was indeed
crucified in weakness, yet He lives by God’s power. And though we are weak in Him, yet by God’s power we will live
with Him to serve you.
Finally, brethren,
farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be
with you.
Finally, brothers,
rejoice! Aim for perfect harmony,
encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be
with you.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be
with you all.
Amen.
The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the
fellowship of the Holy Spirit be
with all of you.
And all the brethren which are
with me, unto the churches of
Galatia:
and all the brothers
with me, To the churches of
Galatia:
To
reveal his Son in me, that I might
preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not
with flesh and blood:
to
reveal His Son in me so that I might
preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not
rush to
consult with flesh and blood,
Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days.
Only after three years did I go up to Jerusalem to
confer with Cephas, and I stayed
with him fifteen days.
Then fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem
with Barnabas, and took
Titus with me also.
Fourteen years later I went up again to Jerusalem, accompanied by
Barnabas. I took
Titus along also.
But neither
Titus, who was
with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be
circumcised:
Yet not even
Titus, who was
with me, was compelled to be
circumcised, even though he was a Greek.
To whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour; that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.
We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.
But when Peter was come to Antioch, I
withstood him to the face, because he was to be
blamed.
When
Cephas came to Antioch, however, I opposed him to his face, because he stood to be condemned.
For before that certain came from James, he did eat
with the Gentiles: but when they were come, he
withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the
circumcision.
For before certain men came from James, he used to eat
with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself, for fear of those in the
circumcision group.
But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel, I said unto Peter before them all, If thou, being a
Jew, livest after the manner of Gentiles, and not as do the Jews, why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews?
When I saw that they were not walking in line
with the truth of the gospel, I said to
Cephas in front of them all, “If you, who are a
Jew, live like a
Gentile and not like a
Jew, how can you
compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”
