That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you.
to sell me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him sell it to me in your presence for full price, so that I may have a burial site.”
My lord,
hearken unto me: the land is
worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that
betwixt me and thee?
bury therefore thy dead.
“
Listen to me, my lord. The land is
worth four hundred shekels of silver, but what is that between you and me?
Bury your dead.”
I am not
worthy of the least of all the
mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness You have shown Your servant. Indeed, with only my staff I came across the Jordan, but now I have become two camps.
And the seven thin and ill favoured
kine that came up after them are seven years; and the seven empty ears blasted with the east wind shall be seven years of famine.
Moreover, the seven thin,
ugly cows that came up after them are seven years, and so are the seven
worthless heads of grain
scorched by the east wind—they are seven years of famine.
Then the priest shall
reckon unto him the
worth of thy
estimation, even unto the year of the jubile: and he shall give thine
estimation in that day, as a holy thing unto the LORD.
then the priest shall
calculate for him the value up to the Year of
Jubilee, and the man shall pay the
assessed value on that day as a sacred offering to the LORD.
It shall not seem hard unto thee, when thou sendest him away free from thee; for he hath been
worth a double
hired servant to thee, in serving thee six years: and the LORD thy God shall
bless thee in all that thou doest.
Do not regard it as a
hardship to set your servant free, because his six years of service were
worth twice the wages of a
hired hand. And the LORD your God will
bless you in all you do.
At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.
On the testimony of two or three witnesses a man shall be put to death, but he shall not be executed on the testimony of a
lone witness.
Lest the
avenger of the blood pursue the
slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and
slay him; whereas he was not
worthy of death, inasmuch as he
hated him not in time past.
Otherwise, the
avenger of blood might pursue the
manslayer in a
rage, overtake him if the distance is great, and strike him dead though he did not deserve to die, since he did not intend any
harm.
And if a man have committed a sin
worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou
hang him on a tree:
If a man has committed a sin
worthy of death, and he is executed, and you
hang his body on a tree,
But unto the
damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the
damsel no sin
worthy of death: for as when a man riseth against his neighbour, and slayeth him, even so is this matter:
Do nothing to the young woman, because she has committed no sin
worthy of death. This case is just like one in which a man attacks his
neighbor and murders him.
And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.
If the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall have him lie down and be
flogged in his presence with the number of lashes his crime warrants.
They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God; they have
provoked me to anger with their
vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people; I will
provoke them to anger with a
foolish nation.
They have
provoked My jealousy by that which is not God; they have
enraged Me with their
worthless idols. So I will make them
jealous by those who are not a people; I will make them
angry by a nation without understanding.
So they gave him seventy shekels of silver from the temple of
Baal-berith, with which
Abimelech hired some
worthless and
reckless men to follow him.
Then
Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of
Tob: and there were gathered vain men to
Jephthah, and went out with him.
So
Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of
Tob, where
worthless men gathered around him and traveled with him.
And all the people that were in the gate, and the elders, said, We are witnesses. The LORD make the woman that is come into thine house like
Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou
worthily in Ephratah, and be famous in
Bethlehem:
“We are witnesses,” said the elders and all the people at the gate. “May the LORD make the woman entering your home like
Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you be prosperous in Ephrathah and famous in
Bethlehem.
But unto
Hannah he gave a
worthy portion; for he loved
Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her
womb.
But to
Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved her even though the LORD had closed her
womb.
But the children of
Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they
despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.
But some
worthless men said, “How can this man save us?” So they
despised him and brought him no gifts; but Saul remained silent about it.
And turn ye not aside: for then should ye go after vain things, which cannot profit nor deliver; for they are vain.
Do not turn aside after worthless things that cannot profit you or deliver you, for they are empty.
But Saul and the people
spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was
vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.
Saul and his troops
spared Agag, along with the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat
calves and lambs, and the best of everything else. They were unwilling to destroy them, but they devoted to destruction all that was
despised and
worthless.
This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are
worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD’S
anointed. And now see where the king’s
spear is, and the
cruse of water that was at his
bolster.
This thing you have done is not good. As surely as the LORD lives, all of you deserve to die, since you did not protect your lord, the LORD’s
anointed. Now look around. Where are the king’s
spear and water
jug that were by his head?”
Then answered all the wicked men and men of
Belial, of those that went with David, and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them ought of the
spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart.
but all the wicked and
worthless men among those who had gone with David said, “Because they did not go with us, we will not share with them the
plunder we recovered, except for each man’s wife and children. They may take them and go.”
And thus said Shimei when he
cursed, Come out, come out, thou
bloody man, and thou man of
Belial:
And as he
yelled curses, Shimei said, “Get out, get out, you
worthless man of
bloodshed!
But the people answered, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we
flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but now thou art
worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou succour us out of the city.
But the people
pleaded, “You must not go out! For if we have to
flee, they will pay no attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not care; but you are
worth ten thousand of us. It is better for now if you support us from the city.”
And there happened to be there a man of
Belial, whose name was
Sheba, the son of Bichri, a
Benjamite: and he
blew a
trumpet, and said, We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of
Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel.
Now a
worthless man named
Sheba son of Bichri, a
Benjamite, happened to be there, and he
blew the ram’s horn and
shouted: “We have no share in David, no inheritance in
Jesse’s son. Every man to his tent, O Israel!”
I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.
But the sons of
Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands:
But the
worthless are all like thorns
raked aside, for they can never be gathered by hand.
And Solomon said, If he will
shew himself a
worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.
And Solomon replied, “If he is a man of character, not a single hair of his will fall to the ground. But if evil is found in him, he will die.”
And unto
Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art
worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been
afflicted in all wherein my father was
afflicted.
Then the king said to
Abiathar the priest, “Go back to your fields in Anathoth. Even though you deserve to die, I will not put you to death at this time, since you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and you suffered through all that my father suffered.”
For all the sins of
Baasha, and the sins of Elah his son, by which they
sinned, and by which they made Israel to sin, in
provoking the LORD God of Israel to anger with their
vanities.
This happened because of all the sins
Baasha and his son Elah had committed and had caused Israel to commit,
provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their
worthless idols.
For he walked in all the way of
Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and in his sin
wherewith he made Israel to sin, to
provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger with their
vanities.
For he walked in all the ways of
Jeroboam son of Nebat and in his sins, which he caused Israel to commit,
provoking the LORD, the God of Israel, to anger with their
worthless idols.
And
Ahab spake unto
Naboth, saying, Give me thy
vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better
vineyard than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the
worth of it in money.
So
Ahab said to
Naboth, “Give me your
vineyard to use as a vegetable garden, since it is next to my palace. I will give you a better
vineyard in its place—or if you
prefer, I will give you its value in silver.”
Look even out the best and meetest of your master’s sons, and set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.
select the best and most worthy son of your master, set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.”
And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his
testimonies which he
testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them.
They rejected His statutes and the covenant He had made with their fathers, as well as the decrees He had given them. They pursued
worthless idols and themselves became
worthless, going after the surrounding nations that the LORD had commanded them not to
imitate.
And there are gathered unto him vain men, the children of
Belial, and have strengthened themselves against
Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when
Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not
withstand them.
Then
worthless and wicked men gathered around him to resist
Rehoboam son of Solomon when he was young, inexperienced, and unable to resist them.
Then the king made a great feast unto all his princes and his servants, even
Esther’s feast; and he made a release to the provinces, and gave gifts, according to the state of the king.
Then the king held a great
banquet,
Esther’s
banquet, for all his officials and servants. He proclaimed a tax
holiday in the provinces and gave gifts
worthy of the king’s
bounty.
But ye are forgers of lies, ye are all physicians of no value.
You, however,
smear with lies; you are all
worthless physicians.
And if it be not so now, who will make me a
liar, and make my speech nothing
worth?
If this is not so, then who can prove me a
liar and reduce my words to nothing?”
Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly?
who says to kings, ‘You are worthless!’ and to nobles, ‘You are wicked,’
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be saved from my enemies.
I have
hated them that regard lying
vanities: but I trust in the LORD.
I
hate those who
cling to
worthless idols, but in the LORD I trust.
Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.
Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.
I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes: I
hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not
cleave to me.
I will set no
worthless thing before my eyes. I
hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not
cling to me.
Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man.
Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless.
Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and
quicken thou me in thy way.
Turn my eyes away from worthless things; revive me with Your word.
A
worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a
perverse mouth,
The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.
The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked has little worth.
Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death.
Riches are
worthless in the day of wrath, but righteousness brings
deliverance from death.
An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.
A
worthless man digs up evil, and his speech is like a
scorching fire.
It is
naught, it is
naught, saith the
buyer: but when he is gone his way, then he boasteth.
“
Worthless,
worthless!” says the
buyer, but on the way out, he gloats.
I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet
acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
I sought to
cheer my body with wine and to embrace folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom—until I could see what was
worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.
Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an
abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of
assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
Bring your
worthless offerings no more; your incense is
detestable to Me— your New Moons, Sabbaths, and convocations. I cannot
endure iniquity in a solemn assembly.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns.
And on that day, in every place that had a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels of silver, only briers and thorns will be found.
But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.
But a noble man makes honorable plans; he stands up for worthy causes.
They that make a
graven image are all of them vanity; and their
delectable things shall not profit; and they are their own witnesses; they see not, nor know; that they may be
ashamed.
All makers of idols are nothing, and the things they
treasure are
worthless. Their witnesses fail to see or
comprehend, so they are put to shame.
Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?
This is what the LORD says: “What fault did your fathers find in Me that they
strayed so far from Me, and followed
worthless idols, and became
worthless themselves?
Behold the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people because of them that dwell in a far country: Is not the LORD in
Zion? is not her king in her? Why have they
provoked me to anger with their
graven images, and with strange
vanities?
Listen to the cry of the daughter of my people from a land far away: “Is the LORD no longer in
Zion? Is her King no longer there?” “Why have they
provoked Me to anger with their carved images, with their
worthless foreign idols?”
For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the
workman, with the
axe.
For the customs of the peoples are
worthless; they cut down a tree from the forest; it is shaped with a
chisel by the hands of a
craftsman.
But they are altogether senseless and
foolish,
instructed by
worthless idols made of wood!
They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their
visitation they shall perish.
They are
worthless, a work to be
mocked. In the time of their punishment they will perish.
Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets
prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they
prophesy unto you a false vision and
divination, and a thing of
nought, and the
deceit of their heart.
Are there any among the
vanities of the Gentiles that can cause rain? or can the heavens give showers? art not thou he, O LORD our God? therefore we will wait upon thee: for thou hast made all these things.
Can the
worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Do the
skies alone send showers? Is this not by You, O LORD our God? So we put our hope in You, for You have done all these things.
Therefore thus saith the LORD, If thou return, then will I bring thee again, and thou shalt stand before me: and if thou take forth the precious from the
vile, thou shalt be as my mouth: let them return unto thee; but return not thou unto them.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “If you return, I will restore you; you will stand in My presence. And if you speak words that are noble instead of
worthless, you will be My
spokesman. It is they who must turn to you, but you must not turn to them.
O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of
affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.
O LORD, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in the day of distress, the nations will come to You from the ends of the earth, and they will say, “Our fathers inherited nothing but lies, worthless idols of no benefit at all.
Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to
stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;
Yet My people have forgotten Me. They burn incense to
worthless idols that make them
stumble in their ways, leaving the ancient roads to walk on
rutted bypaths instead of on the
highway.
Then spake the priests and the prophets unto the princes and to all the people, saying, This man is
worthy to die; for he hath
prophesied against this city, as ye have heard with your ears.
Then the priests and prophets said to the officials and all the people, “This man is
worthy of death, for he has
prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears!”
Then said the princes and all the people unto the priests and to the prophets; This man is not worthy to die: for he hath spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.
Then the officials and all the people told the priests and prophets, “This man is not worthy of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God!”
They are vanity, the work of errors: in the time of their
visitation they shall perish.
They are
worthless, a work to be
mocked. In the time of their punishment they will perish.
The precious sons of
Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as
earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the
potter!
How the precious sons of
Zion, once
worth their weight in pure gold, are now esteemed as jars of clay, the work of a
potter’s hands!
Son of man,
prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD;
Howl ye,
Woe worth the day
“Son of man,
prophesy and declare that this is what the Lord GOD says:
Wail, ‘
Alas for that day!’
Ephraim is
oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after the commandment.
Ephraim is
oppressed,
crushed in judgment, for he is determined to follow
worthless idols.
Israel is
swallowed up: now shall they be among the Gentiles as a vessel wherein is no pleasure.
Israel is
swallowed up! Now they are among the nations like a
worthless vessel.
Those who
cling to
worthless idols
forsake His loving devotion.
He shall recount his
worthies: they shall
stumble in their walk; they shall make
haste to the wall thereof, and the defence shall be prepared.
He
summons his nobles; they
stumble as they advance. They race to its wall; the protective shield is set in place.
Woe to the
idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly
darkened.
Woe to the
worthless shepherd, who deserts the flock! May a sword strike his arm and his right eye! May his arm be completely
withered and his right eye utterly blinded!”
I indeed
baptize you with water unto
repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose
shoes I am not
worthy to bear: he shall
baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
I
baptize you with water for
repentance, but after me will come One more powerful than I, whose
sandals I am not
worthy to carry. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
The
centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not
worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be
healed.
The
centurion answered, “Lord, I am not
worthy to have You come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be
healed.
Nor
scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither
shoes, nor yet
staves: for the
workman is
worthy of his meat.
Take no
bag for the road, or second
tunic, or
sandals, or staff; for the worker is
worthy of his provisions.
And into
whatsoever city or town ye shall enter,
enquire who in it is
worthy; and there
abide till ye go thence.
Whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy there and stay at his house until you move on.
And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.
If the home is worthy, let your peace rest on it; but if it is not, let your peace return to you.
Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.
So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me is not
worthy of Me;
anyone who loves his son or daughter more than Me is not
worthy of Me;
And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
and
anyone who does not take up his cross and follow Me is not
worthy of Me.
Then saith he to his servants, The
wedding is ready, but they which were
bidden were not
worthy.
Then he said to his servants, ‘The
wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited were not
worthy.
And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be
weeping and
gnashing of teeth.
And throw that
worthless servant into the outer darkness, where there will be
weeping and
gnashing of teeth.’
And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the
latchet of whose
shoes I am not
worthy to
stoop down and unloose.
And he began to
proclaim: “After me will come One more powerful than I, the straps of whose
sandals I am not
worthy to
stoop down and
untie.
Bring forth therefore fruits
worthy of
repentance, and begin not to say within
yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
Produce fruit, then, in keeping with
repentance. And do not begin to say to
yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed
baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the
latchet of whose
shoes I am not
worthy to unloose: he shall
baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
John answered all of them: “I
baptize you with water, but One more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose
sandals I am not
worthy to
untie. He will
baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
And when they came to Jesus, they
besought him instantly, saying, That he was
worthy for whom he should do this:
They came to Jesus and
pleaded with Him earnestly, “This man is
worthy to have You grant this,
Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the
centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not
thyself: for I am not
worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof:
So Jesus went with them. But when He was not far from the house, the
centurion sent friends with the message: “Lord, do not trouble
Yourself, for I am not
worthy to have You come under my roof.
Wherefore neither thought I myself
worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be
healed.
That is why I did not consider myself
worthy to come to You. But just say the word, and my servant will be
healed.
And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is
worthy of his
hire. Go not from house to house.
Stay at the same house, eating and drinking whatever you are offered. For the worker is worthy of his wages. Do not move around from house to house.
But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.
And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
But he that knew not, and did commit things
worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto
whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.
But the one who unknowingly does things
worthy of punishment will be beaten with few blows. From
everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from him who has been entrusted with much, even more will be demanded.
And am no more
worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy
hired servants.
I am no longer
worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your
hired servants.”’
And the son said unto him, Father, I have
sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more
worthy to be called thy son.
The son declared, ‘Father, I have
sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer
worthy to be called your son.’
But they which shall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:
But those who are considered worthy to share in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage.
Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
So keep watch at all times, and pray that you may have the strength to escape all that is about to happen and to stand before the Son of Man.”
No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.
Neither has Herod, for he sent Him back to us. As you can see, He has done nothing deserving of death.
And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore
chastise him, and let him go.
A third time he said to them, “What evil has this man done? I have found in Him no
offense worthy of death. So after I
punish Him, I will release Him.”
He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose
shoe’s
latchet I am not
worthy to unloose.
He is the One who comes after me, the straps of whose
sandals I am not
worthy to
untie.”
