Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in
Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
“Go and
assemble all the Jews who can be found in
Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day, and I and my maidens will fast as you do.
After that, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish!”
Then were the king’s
scribes called at that time in the third month, that is, the month
Sivan, on the three and
twentieth day thereof; and it was written according to all that
Mordecai commanded unto the Jews, and to the lieutenants, and the
deputies and rulers of the provinces which are from India unto
Ethiopia, an hundred twenty and seven provinces, unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto every people
after their language, and to the Jews according to their writing, and according to their language.
At once the royal
scribes were summoned, and on the twenty-third day of the third month (the month of
Sivan), they recorded all of
Mordecai’s orders to the Jews and to the satraps, governors, and princes of the 127 provinces from India to
Cush—writing to each province in its own
script, to every people in their own language, and to the Jews in their own
script and language.
Wherefore they called these days
Purim after the name of
Pur. Therefore for all the words of this letter, and of that which they had seen concerning this matter, and which had come unto them,
Therefore these days are called
Purim, from the word
Pur. Because of all the instructions in this letter, and because of all they had seen and experienced,

cursed his day.

cursed the day of his birth.

That thou enquirest after mine iniquity, and searchest after my sin?
that You should seek my iniquity and search out my sin—
Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine
indignation upon me; changes and war are against me.
You produce new witnesses against me and multiply Your anger toward me. Hardships
assault me in wave
after wave.

ere ye make an end of words? mark, and
afterwards we will speak.

after him shall be
astonied at his day, as they that went before were
affrighted.

Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God.
Suffer me that I may speak; and
after that I have spoken,
mock on.
Bear with me while I speak; then,
after I have spoken, you may go on
mocking.
For what pleasure hath he in his house after him, when the number of his months is cut off in the midst?
For what does he care about his household after him, when the number of his months has run out?
The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall draw after him, as there are innumerable before him.
The clods of the valley are sweet to him;
everyone follows behind him, and those before him are without number.
After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
After my words, they spoke no more; my speech settled on them like
dew.
They were driven forth from among men, (they
cried after them as
after a
thief;)
If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked
after mine eyes, and if any
blot hath
cleaved to mine hands;
If my steps have turned from the path, if my heart has followed my eyes, or if impurity has
stuck to my hands,
After it a voice roareth: he thundereth with the voice of his
excellency; and he will not stay them when his voice is heard.
Then there comes a
roaring sound; He thunders with His
majestic voice. He does not restrain the
lightning when His voice resounds.
And now men see not the bright light which is in the clouds: but the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.
Now no one can
gaze at the sun when it is bright in the
skies after the wind has swept them clean.
The range of the mountains is his pasture, and he searcheth after every green thing.
He roams the mountains for pasture, searching for any green thing.
Canst thou bind the
unicorn with his band in the
furrow? or will he
harrow the valleys
after thee?
He maketh a path to
shine after him; one would think the deep to be
hoary.
He leaves a
glistening wake behind him; one would think the deep had white hair!
And it was so, that
after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is
kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.
After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, He said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is
kindled against you and your two friends. For you have not spoken about Me accurately, as My servant Job has.
Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for
yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you
after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.
So now, take seven bulls and seven rams, go to My servant Job, and sacrifice a burnt offering for
yourselves. Then My servant Job will pray for you, for I will accept his prayer and not deal with you according to your folly. For you have not spoken accurately about Me, as My servant Job has.”
And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.
After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his prosperity and doubled his former possessions.
After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations.
After this, Job lived 140 years and saw his children and their children to the fourth generation.
O ye sons of men, how long will ye turn my glory into shame? how long will ye love vanity, and seek
after leasing?
Selah.
How long, O men, will my honor be
maligned? How long will you love vanity and seek
after lies?
Selah The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.
In his pride the wicked man does not seek Him; in all his schemes there is no God.
Their sorrows shall be multiplied that
hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.
Sorrows will multiply to those who
chase other gods. I will not pour out their libations of blood, or speak their names with my lips.
Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
Day
after day they pour forth speech; night
after night they
reveal knowledge.
One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek
after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to
enquire in his temple.
One thing I have asked of the LORD; this is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to
gaze on the beauty of the LORD and seek Him in His temple.
Give them according to their deeds, and according to the wickedness of their endeavours: give them after the work of their hands; render to them their desert.
Repay them according to their deeds and for their works of evil. Repay them for what their hands have done; bring back on them what they deserve.
Let them be confounded and put to shame that seek
after my soul: let them be turned back and brought to confusion that
devise my
hurt.
May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plan to
harm me be driven back and confounded.
They also that seek
after my life lay snares for me: and they that seek my
hurt speak
mischievous things, and imagine deceits all the day long.
Those who seek my life lay snares; those who wish me
harm speak destruction,
plotting deceit all day long.
Let them be
ashamed and confounded together that seek
after my soul to destroy it; let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.
As the
hart panteth
after the water
brooks, so panteth my soul
after thee, O God.
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs after You, O God.
Their inward thought is, that their houses shall continue for ever, and their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names.
Their graves are their eternal homes— their dwellings for endless generations— even though their lands were their namesakes.
For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.
For when he dies, he will carry nothing away; his abundance will not follow him down.
For strangers are risen up against me, and oppressors seek
after my soul: they have not set God before them.
Selah.
For strangers rise up against me, and
ruthless men seek my life— men with no regard for God.
Selah My soul followeth hard after thee: thy right hand upholdeth me.
My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.
The singers went before, the players on instruments followed
after; among them were the damsels playing with
timbrels.
The singers lead the way, the musicians follow after, among the maidens playing tambourines.
Let them be
ashamed and confounded that seek
after my soul: let them be turned backward, and put to confusion, that desire my
hurt.
Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
You guide me with Your counsel, and later receive me in glory.

slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early
after God.

slew them, they would seek Him; they
repented and searched for God.
O God, the proud are risen against me, and the
assemblies of violent men have sought
after my soul; and have not set thee before them.
The
arrogant rise against me, O God; a band of
ruthless men seeks my life, with no regard for You.
Sing unto the LORD,
bless his name;
shew forth his salvation from day to day.
Sing to the LORD,
bless His name;
proclaim His salvation day
after day.
He hath not dealt with us
after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our
iniquities.
He has not dealt with us according to our sins or repaid us according to our
iniquities.
The young lions
roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God.
The young lions
roar for their prey and seek their food from God.
Behold, I have longed
after thy precepts:
quicken me in thy righteousness.
How I long for Your precepts! Revive me in Your righteousness.
The proud have
digged pits for me, which are not
after thy law.
Quicken me
after thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of thy mouth.
Revive me according to Your loving devotion, that I may obey the testimony of Your mouth.
They draw
nigh that follow
after mischief: they are far from thy law.
Those who follow after wickedness draw near; they are far from Your law.
I stretch forth my hands unto thee: my soul thirsteth
after thee, as a
thirsty land.
Selah.
I stretch out my hands to You; my soul thirsts for You like a
parched land.
Selah That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished
after the
similitude of a palace:
Then our sons will be like plants
nurtured in their youth, our daughters like corner pillars carved to
adorn a palace.
Yea, if thou criest
after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
if you truly call out to insight and lift your voice to understanding,
Lust not
after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
Do not
lust in your heart for her beauty or let her
captivate you with her eyes.
He goeth
after her
straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a
fool to the correction of the stocks;
He follows her on impulse, like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer bounding into a
trap,
The way of the wicked is an
abomination unto the LORD: but he loveth him that followeth
after righteousness.
The LORD detests the way of the wicked, but He loves those who pursue righteousness.
The just man walketh in his
integrity: his children are blessed
after him.
The righteous man walks with
integrity; blessed are his children
after him.
Bread of
deceit is sweet to a man; but
afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.
Food gained by
fraud is sweet to a man, but later his mouth is full of gravel.
It is a
snare to the man who devoureth that which is holy, and
after vows to make
enquiry.
He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life, righteousness, and honour.
He who pursues righteousness and loving devotion finds life, righteousness, and honor.
Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for
thyself in the field; and
afterwards build thine house.
Complete your outdoor work and prepare your field; after that, you may build your house.
Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.
Whoever tends a fig tree will eat its fruit, and he who looks
after his master will be honored.
He that tilleth his land shall have
plenty of bread: but he that followeth
after vain persons shall have poverty enough.
The one who works his land will have
plenty of food, but
whoever chases
fantasies will have his fill of poverty.
He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.
A
stingy man hastens
after wealth and does not know that poverty awaits him.
He that rebuketh a man afterwards shall find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue.
He who rebukes a man will later find more favor than one who flatters with his tongue.
He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
A man who remains stiff-necked
after much reproof will suddenly be
shattered beyond recovery.
A
fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till
afterwards.
A
fool vents all his anger, but a wise man holds it back.
There is no
remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any
remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come
after.
There is no
remembrance of those who came before, and those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow
after.
And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
Then I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly; for what more can the king’s successor do than what has already been accomplished?
Yea, I
hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be
after me.
I
hated all for which I had
toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who comes
after me.
Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should
rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be
after him?
I have seen that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will come after him?
There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come
after shall not
rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and
vexation of spirit.
There is no limit to all the people who were before them. Yet the successor will not be celebrated by those who come even later. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
Be not
rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be
hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.
Do not be quick to speak, and do not be
hasty in your heart to utter a word before God.
After all, God is in heaven and you are on earth. So let your words be few.
For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
For who knows what is good for a man during the few days in which he passes through his fleeting life like a shadow? Who can tell a man what will come after him under the sun?
In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of
adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing
after him.
In the day of prosperity, be joyful, but in the day of
adversity, consider this: God has made one of these along with the other, so that a man cannot discover anything that will come
after him.
This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all:
yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and
after that they go to the dead.
This is an evil in everything that is done under the sun: There is one fate for
everyone.
Furthermore, the hearts of men are full of evil and madness while they are alive, and
afterward they join the dead.
A
fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be
after him, who can tell him?
Yet the
fool multiplies words. No one knows what is coming, and who can tell him what will come
after him?
Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.
Cast your bread upon the waters, for after many days you will find it again.
While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not
darkened, nor the clouds return
after the rain:
before the light of the sun, moon, and stars is
darkened, and the clouds return
after the rain,
Draw me, we will run
after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be
glad and
rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
Take me away with you—let us
hurry! May the king bring me to his chambers. We will
rejoice and delight in you; we will praise your love more than wine. It is only right that they
adore you.
Thy princes are
rebellious, and companions of
thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth
after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither
doth the cause of the widow come unto them.
Your rulers are rebels, friends of
thieves. They all love bribes and
chasing after rewards. They do not defend the fatherless, and the
plea of the widow never comes before them.
And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city.
I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as at the beginning. After that you will be called the City of Righteousness, the Faithful City.”
Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.
Lambs will
graze as in their own pastures, and strangers will feed in the ruins of the wealthy.
Nevertheless, there will be no more
gloom for those in distress. In the past He humbled the land of
Zebulun and the land of
Naphtali, but in the future He will honor the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the nations:
Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwellest in
Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall
smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee,
after the manner of Egypt.
Therefore this is what the Lord GOD of Hosts says: “O My people who dwell in
Zion, do not fear Assyria, who strikes you with a rod and lifts his staff against you as the Egyptians did.
And the LORD of hosts shall
stir up a
scourge for him according to the slaughter of
Midian at the rock of Oreb: and as his rod was upon the sea, so shall he lift it up
after the manner of Egypt.
And the LORD of Hosts will
brandish a
whip against them, as when He struck
Midian at the rock of Oreb. He will raise His staff over the sea, as He did in Egypt.
And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:
And He will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not judge by what His eyes see, and He will not decide by what His ears hear,
And he
cried, A lion: My lord, I stand continually upon the
watchtower in the
daytime, and I am set in my ward whole nights:
And it shall come to pass in that day, that Tyre shall be forgotten seventy years, according to the days of one king:
after the end of seventy years shall Tyre sing as an
harlot.
At that time Tyre will be forgotten for seventy years—the span of a king’s life. But at the end of seventy years, it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the
harlot:
And it shall come to pass
after the end of seventy years, that the LORD will visit Tyre, and she shall turn to her
hire, and shall commit
fornication with all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of the earth.
And at the end of seventy years, the LORD will restore Tyre. Then she will return to
hire as a
prostitute and sell herself to all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.
When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the
shaking of an olive tree, and as the
gleaning grapes when the
vintage is done.
So will it be on the earth and among the nations, like a harvested olive tree, like a
gleaning after a
grape harvest.
And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.
They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit. They will be confined to a
dungeon and punished
after many days.
From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a
vexation only to understand the report.
As often as it passes through, it will carry you away; it will
sweep through morning
after morning, by day and by night.” The understanding of this message will bring sheer terror.
The writing of
Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick, and was recovered of his sickness:
This is a writing by
Hezekiah king of Judah
after his illness and recovery:
Ye are my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
“You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD, “and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may consider and believe Me and understand that I am He. Before Me no god was formed, and after Me none will come.
The
carpenter stretcheth out his rule; he marketh it out with a line; he fitteth it with planes, and he marketh it out with the compass, and maketh it
after the figure of a man, according to the beauty of a man; that it may remain in the house.
The woodworker extends a measuring line; he marks it out with a
stylus; he shapes it with chisels and outlines it with a compass. He fashions it in the likeness of man, like man in all his glory, that it may dwell in a
shrine.
Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and
merchandise of
Ethiopia and of the
Sabeans, men of
stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come
after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make
supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God.
This is what the LORD says: “The products of Egypt and the
merchandise of
Cush, along with the
Sabeans, men of
stature, will come over to you and will be yours; they will
trudge behind you; they will come over in chains and bow down to you. They will
confess to you: ‘God is indeed with you, and there is no other; there is no other God.’”
