And the other company of them that gave
thanks went over
against them, and I after them, and the half of the people upon the wall, from beyond the tower of the furnaces even unto the broad wall;
The second
thanksgiving choir proceeded to the left, and I followed it with half the people along the top of the wall, past the Tower of the Ovens to the Broad Wall,
Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but
hired Balaam against them, that he should
curse them:
howbeit our God turned the
curse into a blessing.
because they had not met the Israelites with food and water, but had
hired Balaam to call down a
curse against them (although our God had turned the
curse into a blessing).
Then I commanded, and they
cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I
again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the
frankincense.
Then I ordered that the rooms be
purified, and I had the articles of the house of God restored to them, along with the grain offerings and
frankincense.
In those days saw I in Judah some
treading winepresses on the sabbath, and bringing in
sheaves, and
lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I
testified against them in the day wherein they sold
victuals.
In those days I saw people in Judah
treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on
donkeys, along with wine, grapes, and figs. All kinds of goods were being brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So I
warned them
against selling food on that day.
Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by
profaning the sabbath.
Did not your forefathers do the same things, so that our God brought all this
disaster on us and on this city? And now you are
rekindling His wrath
against Israel by
profaning the Sabbath!”
Then I
testified against them, and said unto them, Why
lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so
again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.
but I
warned them, “Why are you camping in front of the wall? If you do it
again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on, they did not return on the Sabbath.
Shall we then
hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to
transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?
Must we now hear that you too are doing all this terrible evil and acting unfaithfully against our God by marrying foreign women?”
If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Medes, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king
Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal estate unto another that is better than she.
So if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree, and let it be recorded in the laws of Persia and Media so that it cannot be
repealed, that Vashti shall never
again enter the presence of King
Xerxes, and that her royal position shall be given to a woman better than she.
After these things, when the wrath of king
Ahasuerus was
appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed
against her.
Some time later, when the anger of King
Xerxes had
subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had done, and what had been decreed
against her.
After these things did king
Ahasuerus promote
Haman the son of Hammedatha the
Agagite, and advanced him, and set his seat above all the princes that were with him.
After these events, King
Xerxes honored
Haman son of Hammedatha, the
Agagite,
elevating him to a position above all the princes who were with him.
And the king took his ring from his hand, and gave it unto
Haman the son of Hammedatha the
Agagite, the Jews’ enemy.
So the king removed the
signet ring from his finger and gave it to
Haman son of Hammedatha, the
Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.
The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, that they should be ready against that day.
A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued in every province and published to all the people, so that they would be ready on that day.
Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto
Mordecai;
Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in
Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
“Go and
assemble all the Jews who can be found in
Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day, and I and my maidens will fast as you do. After that, I will go to the king, even though it is
against the law. And if I perish, I perish!”
Now it came to pass on the third day, that
Esther put on her royal
apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king’s house, over
against the king’s house: and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house, over
against the gate of the house.
On the third day,
Esther put on her royal
attire and stood in the inner court of the palace across from the king’s quarters. The king was sitting on his royal throne in the royal courtroom, facing the entrance.
And
Mordecai came
again to the king’s gate. But
Haman hasted to his house
mourning, and having his head covered.
Then
Mordecai returned to the king’s gate. But
Haman rushed home, with his head covered in grief.
And
Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends every thing that had
befallen him. Then said his wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, If
Mordecai be of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not prevail
against him, but shalt surely fall before him.
Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened. His advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, “Since
Mordecai, before whom your
downfall has begun, is Jewish, you will not prevail
against him—for surely you will fall before him.”
And the king said
again unto
Esther on the second day at the
banquet of wine, What is thy petition, queen
Esther? and it shall be granted thee: and what is thy request? and it shall be performed, even to the half of the kingdom.
and as they
drank their wine on that second day, the king asked once more, “Queen
Esther, what is your petition? It will be given to you. What is your request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be fulfilled.”
And the king arising from the
banquet of wine in his wrath went into the palace garden: and
Haman stood up to make request for his life to
Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined
against him by the king.
In his
fury, the king arose from drinking his wine and went to the palace garden, while
Haman stayed behind to
beg Queen
Esther for his life, for he realized that the king was
planning a terrible fate for him.
And
Esther spake yet
again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and
besought him with tears to put away the mischief of
Haman the
Agagite, and his
device that he had devised
against the Jews.
And once
again,
Esther addressed the king. She fell at his feet
weeping and
begged him to
revoke the evil scheme of
Haman the
Agagite, which he had devised
against the Jews.
And said, If it please the king, and if I have found favour in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by
Haman the son of Hammedatha the
Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews which are in all the king’s provinces:
“If it pleases the king,” she said, “and if I have found favor in his sight, and the matter seems proper to the king, and I am pleasing in his sight, may an order be written to
revoke the letters that the scheming
Haman son of Hammedatha, the
Agagite, wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king’s provinces.
The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people, and that the Jews should be ready
against that day to
avenge themselves on their enemies.
A copy of the text of the edict was to be issued in every province and published to all the people, so that the Jews would be ready on that day to
avenge themselves on their enemies.
For the Jews that were in
Shushan gathered themselves together on the
fourteenth day also of the month
Adar, and
slew three hundred men at
Shushan; but on the prey they laid not their hand.
On the
fourteenth day of the month of
Adar, the Jews in
Susa came together
again and put to death three hundred men there, but they did not lay a hand on the
plunder.
Because
Haman the son of Hammedatha, the
Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had devised
against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast
Pur, that is, the lot, to
consume them, and to destroy them;
For
Haman son of Hammedatha, the
Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had
plotted against the Jews to destroy them and had cast the
Pur (that is, the lot) to
crush and destroy them.
But when
Esther came before the king, he commanded by letters that his wicked
device, which he devised
against the Jews, should return upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be
hanged on the
gallows.
But when it came before the king, he commanded by letter that the wicked scheme which
Haman had devised
against the Jews should come back upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be
hanged on the
gallows.
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and
Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD.
On another day the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and
Satan also came with them to present himself before Him.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his
integrity, although thou movedst me
against him, to destroy him without cause.
Then the LORD said to
Satan, “Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. He still retains his
integrity, even though you incited Me
against him to ruin him without cause.”
For the arrows of the
Almighty are within me, the poison
whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in
array against me.
For the arrows of the
Almighty have pierced me; my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are
arrayed against me.
Return, I pray you, let it not be iniquity;
yea, return
again, my righteousness is in it.
Reconsider; do not be unjust. Reconsider, for my righteousness is at
stake.
O remember that my life is wind: mine eye shall no more see good.
Remember that my life is but a breath. My eyes will never again see happiness.
I have
sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark
against thee, so that I am a burden to myself?
If I have
sinned, what have I done to You, O watcher of mankind? Why have You made me Your
target, so that I am a burden to You?
When your children
sinned against Him, He gave them over to their rebellion.
He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who hath
hardened himself
against him, and hath
prospered?
God is wise in heart and mighty in strength. Who has resisted Him and
prospered?
How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him?
How then can I answer Him or choose my arguments against Him?
Remember, I
beseech thee, that thou hast made me as the clay; and
wilt thou bring me into dust
again?
Please remember that You
molded me like clay. Would You now return me to dust?
For it increaseth. Thou huntest me as a fierce lion: and
again thou shewest
thyself marvellous upon me.
Should I hold my head high, You would
hunt me like a lion, and
again display Your power
against me.
Thou renewest thy witnesses
against me, and increasest thine
indignation upon me; changes and war are
against me.
You produce new witnesses
against me and multiply Your anger toward me. Hardships
assault me in wave after wave.
But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;
But if only God would speak and open His lips against you,
Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.
What He tears down cannot be rebuilt; the man He imprisons cannot be released.
He increaseth the nations, and destroyeth them: he enlargeth the nations, and straiteneth them again.
He makes nations great and destroys them; He enlarges nations, then disperses them.
For thou writest bitter things
against me, and makest me to possess the
iniquities of my youth.
For You record bitter accusations
against me and
bequeath to me the
iniquities of my youth.
For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will
sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
For there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will
sprout again, and its tender shoots will not fail.
If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
When a man dies, will he live
again? All the days of my hard service I will wait, until my
renewal comes.
Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
You
forever overpower him, and he passes on; You change his countenance and send him away.
Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I:
yea, thine own lips
testify against thee.
Your own mouth, not mine, condemns you; your own lips
testify against you.
That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?
as you turn your spirit against God and pour such words from your mouth?
Trouble and
anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail
against him, as a king ready to the battle.
For he stretcheth out his hand
against God, and strengtheneth himself
against the
Almighty.
For he has stretched out his hand
against God and has
vaunted himself
against the
Almighty,
I also could speak as ye do: if your soul were in my soul’s
stead, I could
heap up words
against you, and
shake mine head at you.
I could also speak like you if you were in my place; I could
heap up words
against you and
shake my head at you.
And thou hast filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness
against me: and my
leanness rising up in me beareth witness to my face.
You have bound me, and it has become a witness; my
frailty rises up and testifies
against me.
They open their mouths against me and strike my cheeks with contempt; they join together against me.
The upright are
appalled at this, and the innocent are
stirred against the godless.
But as for you all, do ye return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you.
But come back and try again, all of you. For I will not find a wise man among you.
The
gin shall take him by the
heel, and the
robber shall prevail
against him.
If indeed you would
exalt yourselves above me and use my disgrace
against me,
He hath also
kindled his wrath
against me, and he counteth me unto him as one of his enemies.
His anger burns against me, and He counts me among His enemies.
His troops come together, and raise up their way
against me, and
encamp round about my tabernacle.
His troops advance together; they construct a
ramp against me and
encamp around my tent.
Yea, young children
despised me; I arose, and they spake
against me.
Even little boys
scorn me; when I appear, they
deride me.
All my inward friends
abhorred me: and they whom I loved are turned
against me.
All my best friends
despise me, and those I love have turned
against me.
He hath
swallowed down riches, and he shall
vomit them up
again: God shall cast them out of his
belly.
He
swallows wealth but vomits it out; God will force it from his stomach.
The heaven shall
reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up
against him.
The heavens will
expose his iniquity, and the earth will rise up
against him.
As for me, is my
complaint to man? and if it were so, why should not my spirit be troubled?
Is my
complaint against a man? Then why should I not be impatient?
Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which ye
wrongfully imagine
against me.
Behold, I know your thoughts full well, the schemes by which you would wrong me.
Will he reprove thee for fear of thee? will he enter with thee into judgment?
Is it for your reverence that He rebukes you and enters into judgment against you?
Will he
plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me.
Would He
contend with me in His great power? No, He would certainly take note of me.
For he performeth the thing that is appointed for me: and many such things are with him.
For He carries out His decree against me, and He has many such plans.
They cause the naked to
lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold.
Without clothing, they
spend the night naked; they have no covering
against the cold.
They are wet with the showers of the mountains, and embrace the rock for want of a shelter.
Drenched by mountain rains, they
huddle against the rocks for want of shelter.
They are of those that
rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor
abide in the paths thereof.
Then there are those who
rebel against the light, not knowing its ways or staying on its paths.
Let mine enemy be as the wicked, and he that riseth up against me as the unrighteous.
May my enemy be like the wicked and my
opponent like the unjust.
For God shall cast upon him, and not
spare: he would
fain flee out of his hand.
It hurls itself
against him without mercy as he flees
headlong from its power.
After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.
After my words, they spoke no more; my speech settled on them like
dew.
Upon my right hand rise the youth; they
push away my feet, and they raise up
against me the ways of their destruction.
The
rabble arises at my right; they lay snares for my feet and build siege ramps
against me.
Terrors are turned upon me: they pursue my soul as the wind: and my
welfare passeth away as a cloud.
Terrors are turned loose against me; they drive away my dignity as by the wind, and my prosperity has passed like a cloud.
Thou art become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest
thyself against me.
If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:
if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless because I saw that I had support in the gate,
If my land cry
against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof
complain;
if my land
cries out
against me and its furrows
weep together,
Then was
kindled the wrath of
Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram:
against Job was his wrath
kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.
This
kindled the anger of
Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram. He burned with anger
against Job for
justifying himself rather than God,
Also
against his three friends was his wrath
kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job.
and he burned with anger
against Job’s three friends because they had failed to
refute Job, and yet had condemned him.
Now he hath not directed his words against me: neither will I answer him with your speeches.
But Job has not directed his words against me, and I will not answer him with your arguments.
Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy,
Yet God finds occasions against me; He counts me as His enemy.
Why
dost thou
strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.
Why do you
complain to Him that He answers nothing a man asks?
Should I lie
against my right? my wound is incurable without
transgression.
Would I lie about my case? My wound is incurable, though I am without
transgression.’
All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust.
all flesh would perish together and mankind would return to the dust.
When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:
But when He remains silent, who can
condemn Him? When He hides His face, who can see Him? Yet He watches over both man and nation,
That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.
Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do it again.’
For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, he clappeth his hands among us, and multiplieth his words against God.
For he adds rebellion to his sin; he
claps his hands among us and multiplies his words
against God.”
If thou sinnest, what doest thou against him? or if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him?
If you sin, what do you
accomplish against Him? If you multiply your transgressions, what do you do to Him?
Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war?
which I hold in reserve for times of trouble, for the day of war and battle?
She is
hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;
She treats her young harshly, as if not her own, with no
concern that her labor was in vain.
He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.
He is the foremost of God’s works; only his Maker can draw the sword against him.
None is so fierce that
dare stir him up: who then is able to stand before me?
No one is so fierce as to
rouse Leviathan. Then who is able to stand
against Me?
And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is
kindled against thee, and
against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.
After the LORD had spoken these words to Job, He said to Eliphaz the Temanite, “My wrath is
kindled against you and your two friends. For you have not spoken about Me accurately, as My servant Job has.
The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together,
against the LORD, and
against his
anointed, saying,
The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together,
against the LORD and
against His
Anointed One:
LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me.
O LORD, how my foes have increased! How many rise up against me!
I laid me down and
slept; I
awaked; for the LORD sustained me.
I lie down and sleep; I
wake again, for the LORD sustains me.
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.
I will not fear the myriads set against me on every side.
