And she
again bare his brother
Abel. And
Abel was a keeper of sheep, but
Cain was a tiller of the ground.
Later she gave birth to
Cain’s brother
Abel. Now
Abel was a keeper of sheep, while
Cain was a tiller of the soil.
And
Cain talked with
Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that
Cain rose up
against Abel his brother, and
slew him.
Then
Cain said to his brother
Abel, “Let us go out to the field.” And while they were in the field,
Cain rose up
against his brother
Abel and killed him.
And Adam knew his wife
again; and she bare a son, and called his name
Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of
Abel, whom
Cain slew.
And Adam
again had relations with his wife, and she gave birth to a son and named him
Seth, saying, “God has granted me another seed in place of
Abel, since
Cain killed him.”
And he stayed yet other seven days; and
again he sent forth the
dove out of the ark;
Noah waited seven more days and
again sent out the
dove from the ark.
And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the
dove; which returned not
again unto him any more.
And
Noah waited seven more days and sent out the
dove again, but this time she did not return to him.
And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not
again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I
again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
When the LORD smelled the pleasing
aroma, He said in His heart, “Never
again will I
curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from his youth. And never
again will I destroy all living creatures as I have done.
And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
And I establish My covenant with you: Never again will all life be cut off by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”
And I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.
I will remember My covenant between Me and you and every living creature of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.
But the men of
Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
But the men of
Sodom were wicked,
sinning greatly
against the LORD.
That these made war with Bera king of
Sodom, and with Birsha king of
Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of
Bela, which is Zoar.
went to war
against Bera king of
Sodom, Birsha king of
Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of
Bela (that is, Zoar).
With
Chedorlaomer the king of
Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of
Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings with five.
against Chedorlaomer king of
Elam, Tidal king of Goiim, Amraphel king of
Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings
against five.
And he divided himself
against them, he and his servants, by night, and
smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.
During the night,
Abram divided his forces and routed
Chedorlaomer’s army, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.
And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.
He
retrieved all the goods, as well as his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the rest of the people.
And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.
So
Abram brought all these to Him, split each of them down the middle, and laid the
halves opposite each other. The birds, however, he did not cut in half.
But in the fourth generation they shall come
hither again: for the iniquity of the
Amorites is not yet full.
In the fourth generation your descendants will return here, for the iniquity of the
Amorites is not yet complete.”
And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
He will be a wild
donkey of a man, and his hand will be
against everyone, and
everyone’s hand
against him; he will live in hostility toward all his brothers.”
And the LORD said, Because the cry of
Sodom and
Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very
grievous;
And he spake unto him yet
again, and said,
Peradventure there shall be forty found there. And he said, I will not do it for forty’s sake.
Once again Abraham spoke to the LORD, “Suppose forty are found there?” He answered, “On account of the forty, I will not do it.”
And they said, Stand back. And they said
again, This one fellow came in to
sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed
sore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.
“Get out of the way!” they replied. And they declared, “This one came here as a foreigner, and he is already acting like a judge! Now we will treat you worse than them.” And they pressed in on Lot and moved in to break down the door.
For we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is
waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.
because we are about to destroy this place. For the outcry to the LORD against its people is so great that He has sent us to destroy it.”
And it came to pass on the
morrow, that the
firstborn said unto the younger, Behold, I lay
yesternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.
The next day the older daughter said to the younger, “Look, I
slept with my father last night. Let us get him
drunk with wine
again tonight so you can go in and sleep with him and we can preserve our father’s line.”
And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.
So
again that night they got their father
drunk with wine, and the younger daughter went in and
slept with him; he was not aware when she lay down or when she got up.
And God said unto him in a dream,
Yea, I know that thou
didst this in the
integrity of thy heart; for I also
withheld thee from
sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
Then God said to
Abimelech in the dream, “
Yes, I know that you did this with a clear conscience, and so I have kept you from
sinning against Me. That is why I did not let you touch her.
Then
Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I
offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.
Then
Abimelech called Abraham and asked, “What have you done to us? How have I
sinned against you, that you have brought such
tremendous guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should not be done.”
So Abraham prayed unto God: and God
healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maidservants; and they bare children.
Then Abraham prayed to God, and God
healed Abimelech and his wife and his maidservants, so that they could
again bear children—
And she went, and sat her down over
against him a good way off, as it were a
bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over
against him, and lift up her voice, and
wept.
Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a
bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and
wept.
And Abraham said unto his young men,
Abide ye here with the
ass; and I and the
lad will go
yonder and worship, and come
again to you,
“Stay here with the
donkey,” Abraham told his servants. “The boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will return to you.”
And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land.
Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land
And the servant said unto him,
Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son
again unto the land from whence thou camest?
The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came?”
And Abraham said unto him,
Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither
again.
Abraham replied, “Make sure that you do not take my son back there.
And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again.
And if the woman is unwilling to follow you, then you are released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”
And the
damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
Now the
girl was very beautiful, a virgin who had not had relations with any man. She went down to the spring, filled her
jar, and came up
again.
And she hasted, and
emptied her pitcher into the
trough, and ran
again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.
And she quickly
emptied her
jar into the
trough and ran back to the well to draw water, until she had drawn water for all his camels.
Then
again Abraham took a wife, and her name was
Keturah.
Now Abraham had taken another wife, named
Keturah,
And Isaac
digged again the wells of water, which they had
digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
Isaac reopened the wells that had been
dug in the days of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died. And he gave these wells the same names his father had given them.
And he said, Art thou my very son
Esau? And he said, I am.
Again he asked, “Are you really my son
Esau?” And he replied, “I am.”
And
Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing
wherewith his father blessed him: and
Esau said in his heart, The days of
mourning for my father are at hand; then will I
slay my brother Jacob.
Esau held a
grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. And
Esau said in his heart, “The days of
mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
Until thy brother’s anger turn away from thee, and he
forget that which thou hast done to him: then I will send, and
fetch thee from thence: why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?
until your brother’s
rage against you wanes and he forgets what you have done to him. Then I will send for you and bring you back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?”
And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places
whither thou goest, and will bring thee
again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:
so that I may return safely to my father’s house, then the LORD will be my God.
And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well’s mouth in his place.
When all the flocks had been gathered there, the
shepherds would roll away the stone from the mouth of the well and water the sheep. Then they would return the stone to its place over the mouth of the well.
And she conceived
again, and bare a son; and said, Because the LORD hath heard that I was
hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name
Simeon.
Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Because the LORD has heard that I am unloved, He has given me this son as well.” So she named him
Simeon.
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.
Once again Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.
And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing.
And once more she conceived and gave birth to a son and said, “This time I will praise the LORD.” So she named him Judah. Then Leah stopped having children.
Jacob became
angry with
Rachel and said, “Am I in the place of God, who has
withheld children from you?”
And
Rachel’s servant
Bilhah conceived
again and bore Jacob a second son.
And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son.
Again Leah conceived and bore a sixth son to Jacob.
And he said, What shall I give thee? And Jacob said, Thou shalt not give me any thing: if thou
wilt do this thing for me, I will
again feed and keep thy flock:
“What can I give you?”
Laban asked. “You do not need to give me anything,” Jacob replied. “If you do this one thing for me, I will keep on
shepherding and keeping your flocks.
And when he saw that he prevailed not
against him, he touched the hollow of his
thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s
thigh was out of joint, as he
wrestled with him.
And Jacob said to
Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to
stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the
Canaanites and the
Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together
against me, and
slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
Then Jacob said to
Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble upon me by making me a
stench to the
Canaanites and
Perizzites, the people of this land. We are few in number; if they unite
against me and attack me, I and my household will be destroyed.”
And God appeared unto Jacob
again, when he came out of Padan-
aram, and blessed him.
After Jacob had returned from Paddan-
aram, God appeared to him
again and blessed him.
And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.
Israel again set out and pitched his tent beyond the Tower of Eder.
And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word
again. So he sent him out of the
vale of
Hebron, and he came to
Shechem.
Then Israel told him, “Go now and see how your brothers and the flocks are faring, and bring word back to me.” So he sent him off from the Valley of
Hebron. And when Joseph arrived in
Shechem,
And when they saw him
afar off, even before he came near unto them, they
conspired against him to
slay him.
Now Joseph’s brothers saw him in the distance, and before he arrived, they
plotted to kill him.
And
Reuben said unto them, Shed no blood, but cast him into this pit that is in the wilderness, and lay no hand upon him; that he might rid him out of their hands, to deliver him to his father
again.
“Do not shed his blood. Throw him into this pit in the wilderness, but do not lay a hand on him.”
Reuben said this so that he could
rescue Joseph from their hands and return him to his father.
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and she called his name Onan.
Again she conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him Onan.
And she yet again conceived, and bare a son; and called his name Shelah: and he was at Chezib, when she bare him.
Then she gave birth to another son and named him Shelah; it was at Chezib that she gave birth to him.
And she arose, and went away, and laid by her
vail from her, and put on the garments of her
widowhood.
Then Tamar got up and departed. And she removed her
veil and put on her widow’s garments
again.
And Judah acknowledged them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew her again no more.
Judah recognized the items and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not have relations with her again.
There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
No one in this house is greater than I am. He has
withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin
against God?”
And Pharaoh was
wroth against two of his officers,
against the chief of the butlers, and
against the chief of the bakers.
And he restored the chief
butler unto his
butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh’s hand:
Pharaoh restored the chief
cupbearer to his position, so that he once
again placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.
And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.
This food will be a reserve for the land during the seven years of famine to come upon the land of Egypt. Then the country will not perish in the famine.”
And
Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin
against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.
And
Reuben responded, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin
against the boy? But you would not
listen. Now we must account for his blood!”
And he turned himself about from them, and
wept; and returned to them
again, and communed with them, and took from them
Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.
And he turned away from them and
wept. When he turned back and spoke to them, he took
Simeon from them and had him bound before their eyes.
And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye
bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and
Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are
against me.
Their father Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons. Joseph is gone and
Simeon is no more. Now you want to take Benjamin. Everything is going
against me!”
And
Reuben spake unto his father, saying,
Slay my two sons, if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee
again.
Then
Reuben said to his father, “You may kill my two sons if I fail to bring him back to you. Put him in my care, and I will return him.”
And it came to pass, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father said unto them, Go
again,
buy us a little food.
So when Jacob’s sons had eaten all the grain they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go back and
buy us a little more food.”
And Judah spake unto him, saying, The man did solemnly
protest unto us, saying, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.
But Judah replied, “The man solemnly
warned us, ‘You will not see my face
again unless your brother is with you.’
But if thou
wilt not send him, we will not go down: for the man said unto us, Ye shall not see my face, except your brother be with you.
But if you will not send him, we will not go; for the man told us, ‘You will not see my face again unless your brother is with you.’”
And take double money in your hand; and the money that was brought
again in the mouth of your sacks, carry it
again in your hand;
peradventure it was an oversight:
Take double the silver with you so that you may return the silver that was put back into the mouths of your sacks. Perhaps it was a mistake.
Take also your brother, and arise, go again unto the man:
Take your brother as well, and return to the man at once.
And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Joseph’s house; and they said, Because of the money that was returned in our sacks at the first time are we brought in; that he may seek occasion
against us, and fall upon us, and take us for
bondmen, and our
asses.
But the brothers were
frightened that they had been taken to Joseph’s house. “We have been brought here because of the silver that was returned in our bags the first time,” they said. “They intend to overpower us and take us as slaves, along with our
donkeys.”
And it came to pass, when we came to the inn, that we opened our sacks, and, behold, every man’s money was in the mouth of his
sack, our money in full weight: and we have brought it
again in our hand.
But when we came to the place we
lodged for the night, we opened our sacks and, behold, each of us found his silver in the mouth of his
sack! It was the full amount of our silver, and we have brought it back with us.
And they made ready the present
against Joseph came at
noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there.
Since the brothers had been told that they were going to eat a meal there, they prepared their gift for Joseph’s arrival at
noon.
Behold, the money, which we found in our sacks’ mouths, we brought
again unto thee out of the land of
Canaan: how then should we
steal out of thy lord’s house silver or gold?
We even brought back to you from the land of
Canaan the silver we found in the mouths of our sacks. Why would we
steal silver or gold from your master’s house?
Then Judah came near unto him, and said, Oh my lord, let thy servant, I pray thee, speak a word in my lord’s ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy servant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.
Then Judah approached Joseph and said, “Sir, please let your servant speak personally to my lord. Do not be
angry with your servant, for you are equal to Pharaoh himself.
And thou saidst unto thy servants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye shall see my face no more.
But you said to your servants, ‘Unless your younger brother comes down with you, you will not see my face again.’
And our father said, Go
again, and
buy us a little food.
Then our father said, ‘Go back and
buy us some food.’
I will go down with thee into Egypt; and I will also surely bring thee up again: and Joseph shall put his hand upon thine eyes.
I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will surely bring you back. And Joseph’s own hands will close your eyes.”
And Israel said unto Joseph, I had not thought to see thy face: and, lo, God hath shewed me also thy seed.
“I never expected to see your face again,” Israel said to Joseph, “but now God has let me see your children as well.”
And Israel said unto Joseph, Behold, I die: but God shall be with you, and bring you again unto the land of your fathers.
Then Israel said to Joseph, “Look, I am about to die, but God will be with you and bring you back to the land of your fathers.
My father made me
swear, saying, Lo, I die: in my grave which I have
digged for me in the land of
Canaan, there shalt thou
bury me. Now therefore let me go up, I pray thee, and
bury my father, and I will come
again.
my father made me
swear an oath when he said, ‘I am about to die. You must
bury me in the tomb that I
dug for myself in the land of
Canaan.’ Now let me go and
bury my father, and then return.”
But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.
As for you, what you intended
against me for evil, God intended for good, in order to
accomplish a day like this—to preserve the lives of many people.
Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
Come, let us deal
shrewdly with them, or they will increase even more; and if a war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight
against us, and leave the country.”
And he said, Put thine hand into thy
bosom again. And he put his hand into his
bosom again; and
plucked it out of his
bosom, and, behold, it was turned
again as his other flesh.
“Put your hand back inside your
cloak,” said the LORD. So Moses put his hand back inside his
cloak, and when he took it out, it was restored, like the rest of his skin.
And the anger of the LORD was
kindled against Moses, and he said, Is not Aaron the
Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he
seeth thee, he will be
glad in his heart.
Then the anger of the LORD burned
against Moses, and He said, “Is not Aaron the
Levite your brother? I know that he can speak well, and he is now on his way to meet you. When he sees you, he will be
glad in his heart.
And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch forth mine hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.
And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD, when I stretch out My hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out from among them.”
Get thee unto Pharaoh in the morning; lo, he goeth out unto the water; and thou shalt stand by the river’s
brink against he come; and the rod which was turned to a serpent shalt thou take in thine hand.
Go to Pharaoh in the morning as you see him walking out to the water. Wait on the bank of the Nile to meet him, and take in your hand the staff that was changed into a
snake.
And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh: and Moses
cried unto the LORD because of the frogs which he had brought
against Pharaoh.
After Moses and Aaron had left Pharaoh, Moses
cried out to the LORD for help with the frogs that He had brought
against Pharaoh.
And Moses said, Behold, I go out from thee, and I will intreat the LORD that the swarms of
flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people, to
morrow: but let not Pharaoh deal
deceitfully any more in not
letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.
“As soon as I leave you,” Moses said, “I will pray to the LORD, so that
tomorrow the swarms of
flies will depart from Pharaoh and his officials and his people. But Pharaoh must not act
deceitfully again by refusing to let the people go and sacrifice to the LORD.”
For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth.
Otherwise, I will send all My plagues against you and your officials and your people, so you may know that there is no one like Me in all the earth.
As yet exaltest thou
thyself against my people, that thou
wilt not let them go?
Still, you lord it over My people and do not allow them to go.
And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the
hail and the thunders were ceased, he
sinned yet more, and
hardened his heart, he and his servants.
And Moses and Aaron were brought again unto Pharaoh: and he said unto them, Go, serve the LORD your God: but who are they that shall go?
So Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. “Go, worship the LORD your God,” he said. “But who exactly will be going?”
And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in all the coasts of Egypt: very
grievous were they; before them there were no such locusts as they, neither after them shall be such.
The locusts
swarmed across the land and settled over the entire territory of Egypt. Never before had there been so many locusts, and never
again will there be.
Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in
haste; and he said, I have
sinned against the LORD your God, and
against you.
Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “I have
sinned against the LORD your God and
against you.
And Pharaoh said unto him, Get thee from me, take
heed to
thyself, see my face no more; for in that day thou seest my face thou shalt die.
“Depart from me!” Pharaoh said to Moses. “Make sure you never see my face again, for on the day you see my face, you will die.”
And Moses said, Thou hast spoken well, I will see thy face again no more.
“As you say,” Moses replied, “I will never see your face again.”
And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.
Then a great cry will go out over all the land of Egypt. Such an outcry has never been heard before and will never be heard again.
