And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD:
So I say, “My strength has perished, along with my hope from the LORD.”
My soul hath them still in
remembrance,
and is humbled in me.
Surely my soul remembers and is humbled within me.
This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.
Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope:
It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD.
It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.
He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him.
Let him sit alone in silence, for God has disciplined him.
Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord commandeth it not?
Who has spoken and it came to pass, unless the Lord has ordained it?
Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good?
Do not both
adversity and good come from the mouth of the Most High?
Let us search and try our ways, and turn again to the LORD.
Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD.
Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.
Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven:
Thou hast covered with anger,
and persecuted us: thou hast slain, thou hast not
pitied.
You have covered
Yourself in anger
and pursued us; You have killed without
pity.
Thou hast made us as the
offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people.
You have made us
scum and refuse among the nations.
Mine eye trickleth down,
and ceaseth not, without any
intermission,
Till the LORD look down, and behold from heaven.
until the LORD looks down from heaven and sees.
They have cut off my life in the
dungeon,
and cast a stone upon me.
They dropped me alive into a pit and cast stones upon me.
Waters flowed over mine head; then I said, I am cut off.
The waters flowed over my head, and I thought I was going to die.
Thou hast seen all their
vengeance and all their imaginations against me.
You have seen all their
malice, all their plots against me.
Thou hast heard their reproach, O LORD, and all their imaginations against me;
O LORD, You have heard their insults, all their plots against me—
The lips of those that rose up against me,
and their
device against me all the day.
Behold their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their musick.
When they sit
and when they rise, see how they
mock me in song.
Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the heavens of the LORD.
You will pursue them in anger
and exterminate them from under Your heavens, O LORD.
The tongue of the
sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for
thirst: the young children ask bread,
and no man breaketh it unto them.
The
nursing infant’s tongue clings in
thirst to the roof of his mouth. Little children
beg for bread, but no one gives them any.
For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the punishment of the sin of
Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment,
and no hands stayed on her.
The punishment of the daughter of my people is greater than that of
Sodom, which was overthrown in an instant without a hand turned to help her.
The LORD hath accomplished his
fury; he hath poured out his fierce anger,
and hath
kindled a fire in
Zion,
and it hath
devoured the foundations thereof.
The LORD has exhausted His wrath; He has poured out His fierce anger; He has
kindled a fire in
Zion,
and it has consumed her foundations.
The kings of the earth,
and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the
adversary and the enemy should have entered into the gates of Jerusalem.
The kings of the earth did not believe, nor any people of the world, that an enemy or a
foe could enter the gates of Jerusalem.
For the sins of her prophets,
and the
iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her,
But this was for the sins of her prophets and the guilt of her priests, who shed the blood of the righteous in her midst.
They
cried unto them, Depart ye; it is unclean; depart, depart, touch not: when they fled away
and wandered, they said among the heathen, They shall no more
sojourn there.
“Go away! Unclean!” men
shouted at them. “Away, away! Do not touch us!” So they fled
and wandered. Among the nations it was said, “They can stay here no longer.”
Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven: they pursued us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.
Those who
chased us were swifter than the eagles in the sky; they pursued us over the mountains
and ambushed us in the wilderness.
Rejoice and be
glad, O daughter of
Edom, that dwellest in the land of
Uz; the cup also shall pass through unto thee: thou shalt be
drunken,
and shalt make
thyself naked.
Remember, O LORD, what is come upon us: consider, and behold our reproach.
Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us. Look and see our disgrace!
We are orphans and fatherless, our mothers are as widows.
We have become fatherless orphans; our mothers are widows.
Our necks are under persecution: we labour, and have no rest.
We are closely pursued; we are
weary and find no rest.
We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread.
We submitted to Egypt and Assyria to get enough bread.
Our fathers
sinned and are no more, but we bear their punishment.
They
ravished the women in
Zion,
and the maids in the cities of Judah.
Women have been
ravished in
Zion, virgins in the cities of Judah.
They took the young men to
grind,
and the children fell under the wood.
Young men
toil at millstones; boys
stagger under loads of wood.
Turn thou us unto thee, O LORD, and we shall be turned; renew our days as of old.
Restore us to
Yourself, O LORD, so we may return; renew our days as of old,
But thou hast utterly rejected us; thou art very
wroth against us.
unless You have utterly rejected us
and remain
angry with us beyond measure.
Now it came to pass in the
thirtieth year, in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the
captives by the river of
Chebar, that the heavens were opened,
and I saw visions of God.
In the
thirtieth year, on the fifth day of the fourth month, while I was among the exiles by the River Kebar, the heavens opened
and I saw visions of God.
The word of the LORD came expressly unto
Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river
Chebar;
and the hand of the LORD was there upon him.
the word of the LORD came directly to
Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the River Kebar.
And there the LORD’s hand was upon him.
And I looked,
and, behold, a
whirlwind came out of the north, a great cloud,
and a fire infolding itself,
and a brightness was about it,
and out of the midst thereof as the colour of
amber, out of the midst of the fire.
I looked
and saw a
whirlwind coming from the north, a great cloud with fire
flashing back
and forth
and brilliant light all around it. In the center of the fire was a
gleam like
amber,
Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures. And this was their appearance; they had the likeness of a man.
and within it was the form of four living creatures. And this was their appearance: They had a human form,
And every one had four faces, and every one had four wings.
but each had four faces and four wings.
And their feet were straight feet;
and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a
calf’s foot:
and they
sparkled like the colour of
burnished brass.
Their legs were straight,
and the soles of their feet were like the
hooves of a
calf,
gleaming like polished bronze.
And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides; and they four had their faces and their wings.
Under their wings on their four sides they had human hands. All four living creatures had faces and wings,
Their wings were joined one to another; they turned not when they went; they went every one straight forward.
and their wings were touching one another. They did not turn as they moved; each one went straight
ahead.
As for the likeness of their faces, they four had the face of a man, and the face of a lion, on the right side: and they four had the face of an ox on the left side; they four also had the face of an eagle.
The form of their faces was that of a man, and each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, the face of an ox on the left side, and also the face of an eagle.
Thus were their faces: and their wings were stretched upward; two wings of every one were joined one to another, and two covered their bodies.
Such were their faces. Their wings were spread upward; each had two wings touching the wings of the creature on either side, and two wings covering its body.
And they went every one straight forward:
whither the spirit was to go, they went;
and they turned not when they went.
Each creature went straight
ahead. Wherever the spirit would go, they would go, without turning as they moved.
As for the likeness of the living creatures, their appearance was like burning coals of fire,
and like the appearance of lamps: it went up
and down among the living creatures;
and the fire was bright,
and out of the fire went forth
lightning.
In the midst of the living creatures was the appearance of
glowing coals of fire, or of torches. Fire moved back
and forth between the living creatures; it was bright,
and lightning flashed out of it.
And the living creatures ran
and returned as the appearance of a
flash of
lightning.
The appearance of the wheels
and their work was like unto the colour of a
beryl:
and they four had one likeness:
and their appearance
and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel.
When they went, they went upon their four sides: and they turned not when they went.
As they moved, they went in any of the four directions, without
pivoting as they moved.
As for their rings, they were so high that they were
dreadful;
and their rings were full of eyes round about them four.
Their rims were high
and awesome,
and all four rims were full of eyes all around.
And when the living creatures went, the wheels went by them: and when the living creatures were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up.
So as the living creatures moved, the wheels moved beside them, and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels also rose.
Whithersoever the spirit was to go, they went, thither was their spirit to go;
and the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.
Wherever the spirit would go, they would go,
and the wheels would rise
alongside them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
When those went, these went; and when those stood, these stood; and when those were lifted up from the earth, the wheels were lifted up over against them: for the spirit of the living creature was in the wheels.
When the creatures moved, the wheels moved; when the creatures stood still, the wheels stood still;
and when the creatures rose from the ground, the wheels rose
alongside them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in the wheels.
And the likeness of the
firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal, stretched forth over their heads above.
Spread out above the heads of the living creatures was the likeness of an
awesome expanse,
gleaming like crystal.
And under the
firmament were their wings straight, the one toward the other: every one had two, which covered on this side,
and every one had two, which covered on that side, their bodies.
And under the
expanse, their wings stretched out toward one another. Each one also had two wings covering its body.
And when they went, I heard the noise of their wings, like the noise of great waters, as the voice of the
Almighty, the voice of speech, as the noise of an host: when they stood, they let down their wings.
When the creatures moved, I heard the sound of their wings like the
roar of many waters, like the voice of the
Almighty, like the
tumult of an army. When they stood still, they lowered their wings.
And there was a voice from the
firmament that was over their heads, when they stood,
and had let down their wings.
And there came a voice from above the
expanse over their heads as they stood still with their wings lowered.
And above the
firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a
sapphire stone:
and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it.
Above the
expanse over their heads was the likeness of a throne with the appearance of
sapphire,
and on the throne high above was a figure like that of a man.
And I saw as the colour of
amber, as the appearance of fire round about within it, from the appearance of his loins even upward,
and from the appearance of his loins even
downward, I saw as it were the appearance of fire,
and it had brightness round about.
From what seemed to be His
waist up, I saw a
gleam like
amber, with what looked like fire within it all around.
And from what seemed to be His
waist down, I saw what looked like fire;
and brilliant light surrounded Him.
As the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud in the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness round about. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake.
The appearance of the brilliant light all around Him was like that of a
rainbow in a cloud on a
rainy day. This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD.
And when I saw it, I fell facedown
and heard a voice speaking.
And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “stand up on your feet and I will speak to you.”
And the spirit entered into me when he spake unto me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him that spake unto me.
And as He spoke to me, the Spirit entered me and set me on my feet, and I heard Him speaking to me.
And he said unto me, Son of man, I send thee to the children of Israel, to a
rebellious nation that hath rebelled against me: they
and their fathers have
transgressed against me, even unto this very day.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “I am sending you to the Israelites, to a
rebellious nation that has rebelled against Me. To this very day they
and their fathers have rebelled against Me.
For they are
impudent children
and stiffhearted. I do send thee unto them;
and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD.
They are
obstinate and stubborn children. I am sending you to them,
and you are to say to them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says.’
And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will
forbear, (for they are a
rebellious house,) yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them.
And whether they
listen or refuse to
listen—for they are a
rebellious house—they will know that a prophet has been among them.
And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers
and thorns be with thee,
and thou
dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a
rebellious house.
But you, son of man, do not be afraid of them or their words. Do not be afraid, though briers
and thorns
surround you,
and you dwell among scorpions. Do not be afraid of their words or dismayed by their presence, though they are a
rebellious house.
And thou shalt speak my words unto them, whether they will hear, or whether they will
forbear: for they are most
rebellious.
But thou, son of man, hear what I say unto thee; Be not thou
rebellious like that
rebellious house: open thy mouth,
and eat that I give thee.
And you, son of man,
listen to what I tell you. Do not be
rebellious like that
rebellious house. Open your mouth
and eat what I give you.”
And when I looked, behold, an hand was sent unto me; and, lo, a roll of a book was therein;
Then I looked
and saw a hand reaching out to me,
and in it was a
scroll,
And he spread it before me;
and it was written within
and without:
and there was written therein
lamentations,
and mourning,
and woe.
which He unrolled before me.
And written on the front
and back of it were words of
lamentation,
mourning,
and woe.
Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “eat what you find here. Eat this
scroll, then go
and speak to the house of Israel.”
So I opened my mouth, and he caused me to eat that roll.
So I opened my mouth,
and He fed me the
scroll.
And he said unto me, Son of man, cause thy
belly to eat,
and fill thy
bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat it;
and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.
“Son of man,” He said to me, “eat
and fill your stomach with this
scroll I am giving you.” So I
ate,
and it was as sweet as honey in my mouth.
And he said unto me, Son of man, go, get thee unto the house of Israel, and speak with my words unto them.
Then He said to me, “Son of man, go now to the house of Israel and speak My words to them.
For thou art not sent to a people of a strange speech and of an hard language, but to the house of Israel;
For you are not being sent to a people of unfamiliar speech or difficult language, but to the house of Israel—
Not to many people of a strange speech
and of an hard language, whose words thou canst not understand. Surely, had I sent thee to them, they would have
hearkened unto thee.
not to the many peoples of unfamiliar speech
and difficult language whose words you cannot understand. Surely if I had sent you to them, they would have
listened to you.
But the house of Israel will be unwilling to
listen to you, since they are unwilling to
listen to Me. For the whole house of Israel is hard-headed
and hard-hearted.
Behold, I have made thy face strong against their faces,
and thy
forehead strong against their foreheads.
Behold, I will make your face as hard as their faces,
and your
forehead as hard as their foreheads.
Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, all my words that I shall speak unto thee receive in thine heart, and hear with thine ears.
“Son of man,” He added, “
listen carefully to all the words I speak to you,
and take them to heart.
And go, get thee to them of the captivity, unto the children of thy people,
and speak unto them,
and tell them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; whether they will hear, or whether they will
forbear.
Go to your people, the exiles; speak to them
and tell them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says,’ whether they
listen or refuse to
listen.”
Then the spirit took me up,
and I heard behind me a voice of a great
rushing, saying, Blessed be the glory of the LORD from his place.
Then the Spirit lifted me up,
and I heard a great
rumbling sound behind me: ‘Blessed be the glory of the LORD in His dwelling place!’
I heard also the noise of the wings of the living creatures that touched one another,
and the noise of the wheels over against them,
and a noise of a great
rushing.
It was the sound of the wings of the living creatures
brushing against one another
and the sound of the wheels beside them, a great
rumbling sound.
So the spirit lifted me up, and took me away, and I went in bitterness, in the heat of my spirit; but the hand of the LORD was strong upon me.
So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness and in the anger of my spirit, with the strong hand of the LORD upon me.
Then I came to them of the captivity at Tel-
abib, that dwelt by the river of
Chebar,
and I sat where they sat,
and remained there
astonished among them seven days.
I came to the exiles at Tel-
abib who dwelt by the River Kebar.
And for seven days I sat where they sat
and remained there among them,
overwhelmed.
And it came to pass at the end of seven days, that the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
At the end of seven days the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
Son of man, I have made thee a
watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth,
and give them
warning from me.
“Son of man, I have made you a
watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from My mouth, give them a
warning from Me.
When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die;
and thou givest him not
warning, nor speakest to
warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
If I say to the wicked man, ‘You will surely die,’ but you do not
warn him or speak out to
warn him from his wicked way to save his life, that wicked man will die in his iniquity,
and I will hold you responsible for his blood.
Yet if thou
warn the wicked,
and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
But if you
warn a wicked man
and he does not turn from his wickedness
and his wicked way, he will die in his iniquity, but you will have saved
yourself.
Again, When a righteous man
doth turn from his righteousness,
and commit iniquity,
and I lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die: because thou hast not given him
warning, he shall die in his sin,
and his righteousness which he hath done shall not be remembered; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
Now if a righteous man turns from his righteousness
and commits iniquity,
and I put a
stumbling block before him, he will die. If you did not
warn him, he will die in his sin,
and the righteous acts he did will not be remembered.
And I will hold you responsible for his blood.
Nevertheless if thou
warn the righteous man, that the righteous sin not,
and he
doth not sin, he shall surely live, because he is
warned; also thou hast delivered thy soul.
But if you
warn the righteous man not to sin,
and he does not sin, he will indeed live because he
heeded your
warning,
and you will have saved
yourself.”
And the hand of the LORD was there upon me; and he said unto me, Arise, go forth into the plain, and I will there talk with thee.
And there the hand of the LORD was upon me, and He said to me, “Get up, go out to the plain, and there I will speak with you.”
Then I arose,
and went forth into the plain:
and, behold, the glory of the LORD stood there, as the glory which I saw by the river of
Chebar:
and I fell on my face.
So I got up and went out to the plain, and behold, the glory of the LORD was present there, like the glory I had seen by the River Kebar, and I fell facedown.
Then the spirit entered into me,
and set me upon my feet,
and spake with me,
and said unto me, Go, shut
thyself within thine house.
Then the Spirit entered me
and set me on my feet. He spoke with me
and said, “Go, shut
yourself inside your house.
