And Sarah saw the son of
Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham,
mocking.
But
Sarah saw that the son whom
Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was
mocking her son,
Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this
bondwoman and her son: for the son of this
bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.
and she said to Abraham, “
Expel the slave woman
and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac!”
And the thing was very
grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son.
Now this matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son
Ishmael.
And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be
grievous in thy sight because of the
lad,
and because of thy
bondwoman; in all that
Sarah hath said unto thee,
hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed about the boy
and your
maidservant.
Listen to everything that
Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.
And also of the son of the
bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.
But I will also make a nation of the slave woman’s son, because he is your offspring.”
And Abraham rose up early in the morning,
and took bread,
and a
bottle of water,
and gave it unto
Hagar, putting it on her shoulder,
and the child,
and sent her away:
and she departed,
and wandered in the wilderness of Beer-
sheba.
Early in the morning, Abraham got up, took bread
and a skin of water, put them on
Hagar’s shoulders,
and sent her away with the boy. She left
and wandered in the Wilderness of
Beersheba.
And the water was spent in the
bottle,
and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.
When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes.
And she went,
and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a
bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child.
And she sat over against him,
and lift up her voice,
and wept.
Then she went off
and sat down nearby, about a
bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the boy die!”
And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice
and wept.
And God heard the voice of the
lad;
and the angel of God called
Hagar out of heaven,
and said unto her, What aileth thee,
Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the
lad where he is.
Then God heard the voice of the boy,
and the angel of God called to
Hagar from heaven, “What is wrong,
Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he lies.
Arise, lift up the
lad,
and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.
Get up, lift up the boy, and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
And God opened her eyes,
and she saw a well of water;
and she went,
and filled the
bottle with water,
and gave the
lad drink.
Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
And God was with the
lad;
and he grew,
and dwelt in the wilderness,
and became an archer.
And God was with the boy, and he grew up and settled in the wilderness and became a great archer.
And he dwelt in the wilderness of
Paran:
and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.
And while he was dwelling in the Wilderness of
Paran, his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
And it came to pass at that time, that
Abimelech and Phichol the chief captain of his host spake unto Abraham, saying, God is with thee in all that thou doest:
At that time
Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army said to Abraham, “God is with you in all that you do.
Now therefore
swear unto me here by God that thou
wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me,
and to the land wherein thou hast
sojourned.
Now, therefore,
swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. Show to me
and to the country in which you reside the same kindness that I have shown to you.”
And Abraham said, I will
swear.
And Abraham replied, “I
swear it.”
And Abraham reproved
Abimelech because of a well of water, which
Abimelech’s servants had violently taken away.
And Abimelech said, I
wot not who hath done this thing: neither
didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to day.
Abimelech replied, “I do not know who has done this. You did not tell me, so I have not heard about it until
today.”
And Abraham took sheep
and oxen,
and gave them unto
Abimelech;
and both of them made a covenant.
So Abraham brought sheep
and cattle
and gave them to
Abimelech,
and the two men made a covenant.
And Abraham set seven
ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.
Abraham separated seven
ewe lambs from the flock,
And Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven
ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves?
and Abimelech asked him, “Why have you set apart these seven
ewe lambs?”
And he said, For these seven
ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I have
digged this well.
He replied, “You are to accept the seven
ewe lambs from my hand as my witness that I
dug this well.”
Thus they made a covenant at Beer-
sheba: then
Abimelech rose up,
and Phichol the chief captain of his host,
and they returned into the land of the Philistines.
After they had made the covenant at
Beersheba,
Abimelech and Phicol the commander of his army got up
and returned to the land of the Philistines.
And Abraham planted a
grove in Beer-
sheba,
and called there on the name of the LORD, the
everlasting God.
And Abraham planted a
tamarisk tree in
Beersheba,
and there he called upon the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.
And Abraham
sojourned in the Philistines’ land many days.
And Abraham resided in the land of the Philistines for a long time.
And it came to pass after these things, that God did
tempt Abraham,
and said unto him, Abraham:
and he said, Behold, here I am.
Some time later God tested Abraham and said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he answered.
And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest,
and get thee into the land of
Moriah;
and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
“Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac, whom you love,
and go to the land of
Moriah. Offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains, which I will show you.”
And Abraham rose up early in the morning,
and saddled his
ass,
and took two of his young men with him,
and Isaac his son,
and clave the wood for the burnt offering,
and rose up,
and went unto the place of which God had told him.
So Abraham got up early the next morning,
saddled his
donkey,
and took along two of his servants
and his son Isaac. He split the wood for a burnt offering
and set out for the place God had designated.
Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes,
and saw the place
afar off.
On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance.
And Abraham said unto his young men,
Abide ye here with the
ass;
and I
and the
lad will go
yonder and worship,
and come again to you,
“Stay here with the
donkey,” Abraham told his servants. “The boy
and I will go over there to worship,
and then we will return to you.”
And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering
and placed it on his son Isaac. He himself carried the fire
and the
sacrificial knife,
and the two of them walked on together.
And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “My father!” “Here I am, my son,” he replied. “The fire and the wood are here,” said Isaac, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two walked on together.
And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
When they arrived at the place God had designated, Abraham built the altar there
and arranged the wood. He bound his son Isaac
and placed him on the altar,
atop the wood.
And Abraham stretched forth his hand,
and took the knife to
slay his son.
Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.
And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
Just then the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham, Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied.
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the
lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not
withheld your only son from me.”
And Abraham lifted up his eyes,
and looked,
and behold behind him a ram caught in a
thicket by his horns:
and Abraham went
and took the ram,
and offered him up for a burnt offering in the
stead of his son.
Then Abraham looked up
and saw behind him a ram in a
thicket, caught by its horns. So he went
and took the ram
and offered it as a burnt offering in place of his son.
And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
And Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. So to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”
And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
And the angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time,
And said, By myself have I
sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing,
and hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son:
saying, “By Myself I have
sworn, declares the LORD, that because you have done this
and have not
withheld your only son,
That in blessing I will
bless thee,
and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven,
and as the sand which is upon the sea shore;
and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
I will surely
bless you,
and I will multiply your descendants like the stars in the sky
and the sand on the
seashore. Your descendants will possess the gates of their enemies.
And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
So Abraham returned unto his young men,
and they rose up
and went together to Beer-
sheba;
and Abraham dwelt at Beer-
sheba.
Abraham went back to his servants,
and they got up
and set out together for
Beersheba.
And Abraham settled in
Beersheba.
And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying, Behold, Milcah, she hath also born children unto thy brother
Nahor;
Some time later, Abraham was told, “Milcah has also borne sons to your brother
Nahor:
And Chesed,
and Hazo,
and Pildash,
and Jidlaph,
and Bethuel.
Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph,
and Bethuel.”
And Bethuel became the father of
Rebekah. Milcah bore these eight sons to Abraham’s brother
Nahor.
And his
concubine, whose name was Reumah, she bare also Tebah,
and Gaham,
and Thahash,
and Maachah.
And Sarah was an hundred
and seven
and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of
Sarah.
Now
Sarah lived to be 127 years old.
She died in Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron) in the land of
Canaan,
and Abraham went out to
mourn and to
weep for her.
And Abraham stood up from before his dead,
and spake unto the sons of
Heth, saying,
Then Abraham got up from beside his dead wife
and said to the
Hittites,
I am a stranger
and a
sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may
bury my dead out of my sight.
“I am a foreigner
and an outsider among you. Give me a burial site among you so that I can
bury my dead.”
And the children of
Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him,
And Abraham stood up,
and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of
Heth.
Then Abraham rose
and bowed down before the people of the land, the
Hittites.
And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should
bury my dead out of my sight; hear me,
and intreat for me to Ephron the son of
Zohar,
“If you are willing for me to
bury my dead,” he said to them, “
listen to me,
and approach Ephron son of
Zohar on my behalf
And Ephron dwelt among the children of
Heth:
and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the
audience of the children of
Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying,
Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of
Heth. So in the presence of all the
Hittites who had come to the gate of his city, Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham,
Nay, my lord, hear me: the field give I thee,
and the cave that is therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee:
bury thy dead.
“No, my lord.
Listen to me. I give you the field,
and I give you the cave that is in it. I give it to you in the presence of my people.
Bury your dead.”
And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land.
Again Abraham bowed down before the people of the land
And he spake unto Ephron in the
audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou
wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money for the field; take it of me,
and I will
bury my dead there.
and said to Ephron in their presence, “If you will please
listen to me, I will pay you the price of the field. Accept it from me, so that I may
bury my dead there.”
And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him,
Ephron answered Abraham,
My lord,
hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that
betwixt me
and thee?
bury therefore thy dead.
“
Listen to me, my lord. The land is worth four hundred shekels of silver, but what is that between you
and me?
Bury your dead.”
And Abraham
hearkened unto Ephron;
and Abraham
weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the
audience of the sons of
Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.
Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms
and weighed out for him the price he had named in the hearing of the
Hittites: four hundred shekels of silver, according to the standard of the merchants.
And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before
Mamre, the field,
and the cave which was therein,
and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure
So Ephron’s field at Machpelah near
Mamre, the cave that was in it,
and all the trees within the boundaries of the field were deeded over
And after this, Abraham buried
Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before
Mamre: the same is
Hebron in the land of
Canaan.
After this, Abraham buried his wife
Sarah in the cave of the field at Machpelah near
Mamre (that is,
Hebron) in the land of
Canaan.
And the field,
and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of
Heth.
So the field
and its cave were deeded by the
Hittites to Abraham as a burial site.
And Abraham was old,
and well
stricken in age:
and the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things.
By now Abraham was old and well along in years, and the LORD had blessed him in every way.
And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my
thigh:
So Abraham
instructed the chief servant of his household, who managed all he owned, “Place your hand under my
thigh,
And I will make thee
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven,
and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the
Canaanites, among whom I dwell:
and I will have you
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven
and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the
Canaanites among whom I am dwelling,
But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac.
but will go to my country and my kindred to take a wife for my son Isaac.”
And the servant said unto him,
Peradventure the woman will not be willing to follow me unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto the land from whence thou camest?
The servant asked him, “What if the woman is unwilling to follow me to this land? Shall I then take your son back to the land from which you came?”
And Abraham said unto him,
Beware thou that thou bring not my son thither again.
Abraham replied, “Make sure that you do not take my son back there.
The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house,
and from the land of my kindred,
and which spake unto me,
and that
sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee,
and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.
The LORD, the God of heaven, who brought me from my father’s house and my native land, who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give this land’—He will send His angel before you so that you can take a wife for my son from there.
And if the woman will not be willing to follow thee, then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: only bring not my son thither again.
And if the woman is unwilling to follow you, then you are released from this oath of mine. Only do not take my son back there.”
And the servant put his hand under the
thigh of Abraham his master,
and sware to him concerning that matter.
So the servant placed his hand under the
thigh of his master Abraham
and swore an oath to him concerning this matter.
And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master,
and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand:
and he arose,
and went to
Mesopotamia, unto the city of
Nahor.
Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels
and departed with all manner of good things from his master in hand.
And he set out for
Nahor’s hometown in
Aram-naharaim.
And he made his camels to
kneel down without the city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.
As evening approached, he made the camels
kneel down near the well outside the town at the time when the women went out to draw water.
And he said, O LORD God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day,
and shew kindness unto my master Abraham.
“O LORD, God of my master Abraham,” he prayed, “please grant me success
today,
and show kindness to my master Abraham.
Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:
Here I am, standing beside the spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.
And let it come to pass, that the
damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink;
and she shall say, Drink,
and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac;
and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
Now may it happen that the
girl to whom I say, ‘Please let down your
jar that I may drink,’
and who responds, ‘Drink,
and I will water your camels as well’—let her be the one You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You have shown kindness to my master.”
And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold,
Rebekah came out, who was born to
Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of
Nahor, Abraham’s brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
Before the servant had finished praying,
Rebekah came out with her
jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of
Bethuel son of Milcah, the wife of Abraham’s brother
Nahor.
And the
damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her:
and she went down to the well,
and filled her pitcher,
and came up.
Now the
girl was very beautiful, a virgin who had not had relations with any man. She went down to the spring, filled her
jar,
and came up again.
And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.
So the servant ran to meet her
and said, “Please let me have a little water from your
jar.”
And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
“Drink, my lord,” she replied,
and she quickly lowered her
jar to her hands
and gave him a drink.
And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.
After she had given him a drink, she said, “I will also draw water for your camels, until they have had enough to drink.”
And she hasted,
and emptied her pitcher into the
trough,
and ran again unto the well to draw water,
and drew for all his camels.
And she quickly
emptied her
jar into the
trough and ran back to the well to draw water, until she had drawn water for all his camels.
And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.
Meanwhile, the man watched her silently to see whether or not the LORD had made his journey a success.
And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden
earring of half a
shekel weight,
and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold;
And after the camels had finished drinking, he took out a gold ring weighing a beka, and two gold bracelets for her wrists weighing ten shekels.
And said, Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father’s house for us to
lodge in?
“Whose daughter are you?” he asked. “Please tell me, is there room in your father’s house for us to
spend the night?”
And she said unto him, I am the daughter of
Bethuel the son of Milcah, which she bare unto
Nahor.
She replied, “I am the daughter of
Bethuel, the son that Milcah bore to
Nahor.”
She said moreover unto him, We have both straw
and provender enough,
and room to
lodge in.
Then she added, “We have
plenty of straw
and feed, as well as a place for you to
spend the night.”
And the man bowed down his head, and worshipped the LORD.
Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD,
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren.
saying, “Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not
withheld His kindness
and faithfulness from my master. As for me, the LORD has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.”
And the
damsel ran,
and told them of her mother’s house these things.
The
girl ran
and told her mother’s household about these things.
And Rebekah had a brother,
and his name was
Laban:
and Laban ran out unto the man, unto the well.
And it came to pass, when he saw the
earring and bracelets upon his sister’s hands,
and when he heard the words of
Rebekah his sister, saying, Thus spake the man unto me; that he came unto the man;
and, behold, he stood by the camels at the well.
As soon as he saw the ring,
and the bracelets on his sister’s wrists,
and heard
Rebekah’s words, “The man said this to me,” he went
and found the man standing by the camels near the spring.
And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.
“Come, you who are blessed by the LORD,” said
Laban. “Why are you standing out here? I have prepared the house
and a place for the camels.”
And the man came into the house:
and he
ungirded his camels,
and gave straw
and provender for the camels,
and water to wash his feet,
and the men’s feet that were with him.
So the man came to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and feed were brought to the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of his companions.
And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I have told mine
errand.
And he said, Speak on.
Then a meal was set before the man, but he said, “I will not eat until I have told you what I came to say.” So
Laban said, “Please speak.”
And he said, I am Abraham’s servant.
“I am Abraham’s servant,” he replied.
