Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their
backs before their enemies, because they were
accursed: neither will I be with you any more, except ye destroy the
accursed from among you.
This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They will turn their backs and run from their enemies, because they themselves have been set apart for destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you remove from among you whatever is devoted to destruction.
And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
Joshua and all Israel let themselves be beaten back before them, and they fled toward the wilderness.
And when the men of
Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to
flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned
back upon the pursuers.
When the men of
Ai turned and looked
back, the smoke of the city was rising into the sky. They could not escape in any direction, and the troops who had fled to the wilderness now became the pursuers.
For Joshua drew not his hand
back,
wherewith he stretched out the
spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of
Ai.
Joshua did not draw
back the hand that held his battle
lance until he had devoted to destruction all who lived in
Ai.
And Joshua at that time turned
back, and took Hazor, and
smote the king thereof with the sword: for Hazor
beforetime was the head of all those kingdoms.
At that time Joshua turned back and captured Hazor and put its king to the sword, because Hazor was formerly the head of all these kingdoms.
Forty years old was I when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to
espy out the land; and I brought him word again as it was in mine heart.
I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the LORD sent me from Kadesh-barnea to
spy out the land, and I brought
back to him an
honest report.
And then the coast turneth to
Ramah, and to the strong city Tyre; and the coast turneth to Hosah; and the outgoings thereof are at the sea from the coast to
Achzib:
The border then turned
back toward
Ramah as far as the fortified city of Tyre, turned toward Hosah, and came out at the Sea in the region of
Achzib,
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar the priest, and the princes, returned from the children of
Reuben, and from the children of
Gad, out of the land of
Gilead, unto the land of
Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought them word again.
Then
Phinehas son of
Eleazar the priest, together with the other leaders, returned to the Israelites in the land of
Canaan and brought
back a report regarding the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of
Gilead.
Else if ye do in any wise go
back, and
cleave unto the
remnant of these nations, even these that remain among you, and shall make marriages with them, and go in unto them, and they to you:
For if you turn away and
cling to the rest of these nations that remain among you, and if you
intermarry and associate with them,
But he himself turned again from the
quarries that were by
Gilgal, and said, I have a secret
errand unto thee, O king: who said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.
But upon reaching the idols near
Gilgal, he himself turned
back and said, “I have a secret message for you, O king.” “Silence,” said the king, and all his attendants left him.
Now therefore go to,
proclaim in the ears of the people, saying,
Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount
Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.
Now, therefore,
proclaim in the hearing of the people: ‘
Whoever is fearful and
trembling may turn
back and leave Mount
Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand of them turned
back, but ten thousand remained.
And all the evil of the men of
Shechem did God render upon their heads: and upon them came the
curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
And God also brought all the wickedness of the men of
Shechem back upon their own heads. So the
curse of Jotham son of Jerubbaal came upon them.
And
Jephthah said unto the elders of
Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of
Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?
But
Jephthah asked them, “If you take me
back to fight the
Ammonites and the LORD gives them to me, will I really be your leader?”
While Israel dwelt in
Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of
Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?
For three hundred years Israel has lived in
Heshbon, Aroer, and their villages, as well as all the cities along the banks of the
Arnon. Why did you not take them
back during that time?
And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said,
Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go
back.
As soon as
Jephthah saw her, he
tore his clothes and said, “No! Not my daughter! You have brought me to my knees! You have brought great misery upon me, for I have given my word to the LORD and cannot take it
back.”
And he had thirty sons, and thirty daughters, whom he sent abroad, and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.
He had thirty sons, as well as thirty daughters whom he gave in marriage to men outside his clan; and for his sons he brought back thirty wives from elsewhere. Ibzan judged Israel seven years.
And the men of Judah said, Why are ye come up against us? And they answered, To bind
Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us.
“Why have you attacked us?” said the men of Judah. The Philistines replied, “We have come to arrest
Samson and pay him
back for what he has done to us.”
Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was
shaven.
However, the hair of his head began to grow
back after it had been
shaved.
And
Samson called unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, remember me, I pray thee, and
strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, that I may be at once
avenged of the Philistines for my two eyes.
Then
Samson called out to the LORD: “O Lord GOD, please remember me.
Strengthen me, O God, just once more, so that with one
vengeful blow I may pay
back the Philistines for my two eyes.”
Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the buryingplace of
Manoah his father. And he judged Israel twenty years.
Then
Samson’s brothers and his father’s family came down, carried him
back, and buried him between Zorah and Eshtaol in the tomb of his father
Manoah. And he had judged Israel twenty years.
And the children of
Dan went their way: and when
Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went
back unto his house.
So the Danites went on their way, and
Micah turned to go
back home, because he saw that they were too strong for him.
And her husband arose, and went after her, to speak friendly unto her, and to bring her again, having his servant with him, and a couple of
asses: and she brought him into her father’s house: and when the father of the
damsel saw him, he
rejoiced to meet him.
her husband got up and went after her to speak kindly to her and bring her
back, taking his servant and a pair of
donkeys. So the
girl brought him into her father’s house, and when her father saw him, he
gladly welcomed him.
Then came the woman in the
dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light.
Early that morning, the woman went
back to the house where her master was staying,
collapsed at the
doorway, and lay there until it was light.
And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were
amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.
Then the men of Israel turned
back on them, and the men of Benjamin were
terrified when they realized that
disaster had come upon them.
Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
So they fled before the men of Israel toward the wilderness, but the battle overtook them, and the men coming out of the cities struck them down there.
And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and
smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
And the men of Israel turned back against the other Benjamites and put to the sword all the cities, including the animals and everything else they found. And they burned down all the cities in their path.
And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.
The Benjamites did as
instructed and carried away the number of women they needed from the dancers they caught. They went
back to their own inheritance, rebuilt their cities, and settled in them.
Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah.
Accompanied by her two daughters-in-law, she left the place where she had been living and set out on the road leading back to the land of Judah.
And
Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother’s house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me.
Then
Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, “Go
back, each of you to your mother’s home. May the LORD show you loving devotion, as you have shown to your dead and to me.
And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.
“Look,” said
Naomi, “your sister-in-law has gone
back to her people and her gods; follow her
back home.”
I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me
Naomi, seeing the LORD hath
testified against me, and the
Almighty hath
afflicted me?
I went away full, but the LORD has brought me
back empty. Why call me
Naomi? After all, the LORD has
testified against me, and the
Almighty has
afflicted me.”
And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the
Moabitish damsel that came
back with
Naomi out of the country of Moab:
And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law.
And she said, “He gave me these six measures of barley, for he said, ‘Do not go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’”
And I thought to
advertise thee, saying,
Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou
wilt redeem it,
redeem it: but if thou
wilt not
redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to
redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will
redeem it.
I thought I should inform you that you may
buy it
back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to
redeem it, do so. But if you will not
redeem it, tell me so I may know, because there is no one but you to
redeem it, and I am next after you.” “I will
redeem it,” he replied.
And he ran unto
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
He ran to
Eli and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go
back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.
And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou
didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up, went to
Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” “My son, I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go
back and lie down.”
So the people sent to
Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
So the people sent men to
Shiloh, and they brought
back the ark of the covenant of the LORD of Hosts, who sits enthroned between the
cherubim. And the two sons of
Eli,
Hophni and
Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat
backward by the side of the gate, and his neck
brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.
As soon as the ark of God was mentioned,
Eli fell
backward from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And
Eli had judged Israel forty years.
And the Philistines called for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us
wherewith we shall send it to his place.
the Philistines summoned the priests and diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us how to send it back to its place.”
Then said they, What shall be the
trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden
emerods, and five golden
mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.
“What guilt offering should we send back to Him?” asked the Philistines. “Five gold tumors and five gold rats,” they said, “according to the number of rulers of the Philistines, since the same plague has struck both you and your rulers.
As a guilt offering to the LORD, the Philistines had sent
back one gold
tumor for each city:
Ashdod,
Gaza, Ashkelon,
Gath, and
Ekron.
And the LORD said to Samuel,
Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
“
Listen to their voice,” the LORD said to Samuel. “
Appoint a king for them.” Then Samuel told the men of Israel, “
Everyone must go
back to his city.”
And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the
asses, and take thought for us.
When they reached the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant, “Come, let us go
back, or my father will stop
worrying about the
donkeys and start
worrying about us.”
And the
cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
So the
cook picked up the leg and what was attached to it and set it before Saul. Then Samuel said, “Here is what was kept
back. It was set apart for you. Eat, for it has been kept for you for this occasion, from the time I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul
dined with Samuel that day.
And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.
As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed Saul’s heart, and all the signs came to pass that day.
It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned
back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it
grieved Samuel; and he
cried unto the LORD all night.
“I
regret that I have made Saul king, for he has turned away from following Me and has not carried out My instructions.” And Samuel was distressed and
cried out to the LORD all that night.
And Saul said unto Samuel,
Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought
Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the
Amalekites.
“But I did obey the LORD,” Saul replied. “I went on the mission that the LORD gave me. I brought
back Agag king of Amalek and devoted the
Amalekites to destruction.
Then he said, I have
sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God.
“I have
sinned,” Saul replied. “Please honor me now before the elders of my people and before Israel. Come
back with me, so that I may worship the LORD your God.”
So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.
So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the LORD.
But David went and returned from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at
Bethlehem.
but David went
back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s sheep in
Bethlehem.
And carry these ten cheeses unto the captain of their thousand, and look how thy brethren
fare, and take their
pledge.
Take also these ten portions of
cheese to the commander of their unit. Check on the
welfare of your brothers and bring
back an assurance from them.
Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
Therefore Saul sent David away and gave him command of a thousand men. David led the troops out to battle and back,
But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.
But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he was leading them out to battle and back.
And Saul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may
slay him.
But Saul sent the messengers back to see David and told them, “Bring him up to me in his bed so I can kill him.”
And
Jonathan gave his artillery unto his
lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.
Then
Jonathan gave his
equipment to the boy and said, “Go, take it
back to the city.”
And
Jonathan said to David, Go in peace,
forasmuch as we have
sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and
Jonathan went into the city.
And
Jonathan said to David, “Go in peace, for the two of us have
sworn in the name of the LORD, saying, ‘May the LORD be a witness between you and me, and between your descendants and mine
forever.’” Then David got up and departed, and
Jonathan went
back into the city.
See therefore, and take knowledge of all the
lurking places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.
Observe and find out all the places where he hides. Then come back to me with certainty, and I will go with you. If he is in the land, I will search him out among all the clans of Judah.”
And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and
wept.
When David had finished saying these things, Saul called
back, “Is that your voice, David my son?” Then Saul
wept aloud So David’s young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him all those sayings.
So David’s men turned around and went back, and they relayed to him all these words.
Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that
pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good.
Now David had just finished saying, “In vain I have protected all that belonged to this man in the wilderness. Nothing that belongs to him has gone missing, yet he has paid me back evil for good.
Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the LORD hath
withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from
avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
Now, my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and you
yourself live, the LORD has held you
back from coming to
bloodshed and
avenging yourself with your own hand. May your enemies and those who seek
harm for my lord be like Nabal.
For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me
back from
hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.
Otherwise, as surely as the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, who has restrained me from
harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, then surely no male belonging to Nabal would have been left alive by morning light.”
Then said Saul, I have
sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee
harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the
fool, and have
erred exceedingly.
Then Saul replied, “I have
sinned. Come
back, David my son. I will never
harm you again, because
today you considered my life precious. I have played the
fool and have committed a grave error!”
And the princes of the Philistines were
wroth with him; and the princes of the Philistines said unto him, Make this fellow return, that he may go again to his place which thou hast appointed him, and let him not go down with us to battle, lest in the battle he be an
adversary to us: for
wherewith should he
reconcile himself unto his master? should it not be with the heads of these men?
But the commanders of the Philistines were
angry with Achish and told him, “Send that man
back and let him return to the place you assigned him. He must not go down with us into battle only to become our
adversary during the war. What better way for him to regain the favor of his master than with the heads of our men?
Wherefore now return, and go in peace, that thou displease not the lords of the Philistines.
Therefore turn back now and go in peace, so that you will not do anything to displease the leaders of the Philistines.”
And there was nothing lacking to them, neither small nor great, neither sons nor daughters, neither
spoil, nor any thing that they had taken to them: David recovered all.
Nothing was missing, young or old, son or daughter, or any of the
plunder the
Amalekites had taken. David brought everything
back.
From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of
Jonathan turned not
back, and the sword of Saul returned not empty.
From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of
Jonathan did not retreat, and the sword of Saul did not return empty.
Then
Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou
Asahel? And he answered, I am.
Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore
Abner with the hinder end of the
spear smote him under the fifth rib, that the
spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where
Asahel fell down and died stood still.
But
Asahel refused to turn away; so
Abner thrust the
butt of his
spear into his stomach, and it came out his
back, and he fell dead on the spot. And every man
paused when he came to the place where
Asahel had fallen and died.
And David sent messengers to
Ish-bosheth Saul’s son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I
espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines.
Then David sent messengers to say to
Ish-bosheth son of Saul, “Give me
back my wife, Michal, whom I
betrothed to myself for a hundred
Philistine foreskins.”
And her husband went with her along
weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said
Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned.
Her husband followed her,
weeping all the way to Bahurim. Then
Abner said to him, “Go
back.” So he returned home.
And when
Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after
Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not.
As soon as
Joab had left David, he sent messengers after
Abner, who brought him
back from the well of Sirah; but David was unaware of it.
Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou
wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.
Even in times past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them
back. And to you the LORD said, ‘You will
shepherd My people Israel, and you will be ruler over them.’”
When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly
ashamed: and the king said,
Tarry at
Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
When this was reported to David, he sent messengers to meet the men, since they had been thoroughly
humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in
Jericho until your beards have grown
back, and then return.”
And David said to Uriah,
Tarry here to day also, and to
morrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day, and the
morrow.
“Stay here one more day,” David said to Uriah, “and
tomorrow I will send you
back.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next.
And the
messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us, and came out unto us into the field, and we were upon them even unto the entering of the gate.
The
messenger said to David, “The men overpowered us and came out against us in the field, but we drove them
back to the entrance of the gate.
But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.
But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me.”
And the woman said, Wherefore then hast thou thought such a thing against the people of God? for the king
doth speak this thing as one which is
faulty, in that the king
doth not
fetch home again his banished.
The woman asked, “Why have you devised a thing like this against the people of God? When the king says this, does he not
convict himself, since he has not brought
back his own banished son?
And the king said unto
Joab, Behold now, I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man
Absalom again.
Then the king said to
Joab, “I
hereby grant this request. Go, bring
back the young man
Absalom.”
And
Absalom answered
Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying, Come
hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, Wherefore am I come from Geshur? it had been good for me to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king’s face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me.
“Look,” said
Absalom, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come
back from Geshur? It would be better for me if I were still there.’ So now, let me see the king’s face, and if there is iniquity in me, let him kill me.”
For thy servant
vowed a
vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD.
For your servant made a
vow while dwelling in Geshur of
Aram, saying: ‘If indeed the LORD brings me
back to Jerusalem, I will worship the LORD in
Hebron.’”
Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and
abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.
Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why should you also go with us? Go back and stay with the new king, since you are both a foreigner and an exile from your homeland.
Whereas thou camest but
yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go
whither I may, return thou, and take
back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.
In fact, you arrived only
yesterday; should I make you
wander around with us
today while I do not know where I am going? Go
back and take your brothers with you. May the LORD show you loving devotion and faithfulness.”
And the king said unto
Zadok, Carry
back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again, and
shew me both it, and his
habitation:
Then the king said to
Zadok, “Return the ark of God to the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the LORD, He will bring me
back and let me see both it and His dwelling place again.
The LORD hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose
stead thou hast reigned; and the LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of
Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art a
bloody man.
The LORD has paid you
back for all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned, and the LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of your son
Absalom. See, you have come to ruin because you are a man of
bloodshed!”
And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.
and bring all the people
back to you as a
bride returning to her husband. You seek the life of only one man; then all the people will be at peace.”
And
Joab blew the
trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for
Joab held
back the people.
Then
Joab blew the ram’s horn, and the troops broke off their pursuit of Israel because
Joab had restrained them.
And
Absalom, whom we
anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why speak ye not a word of bringing the king
back?
But
Absalom, the man we
anointed over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing about restoring the king?”
And king David sent to
Zadok and to
Abiathar the priests, saying, Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to bring the king
back to his house? seeing the speech of all Israel is come to the king, even to his house.
Then King David sent this message to
Zadok and
Abiathar, the priests: “Say to the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to restore the king to his palace, since the talk of all Israel has reached the king at his quarters?
Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king?
You are my brothers, my own flesh and blood. So why should you be the last to restore the king?’
Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.
Please let your servant return, that I may die in my own city near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Chimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king, and do for him what is good in your sight.”
And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye
despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing
back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.
“We have ten shares in the king,” answered the men of Israel, “so we have more claim to David than you. Why then do you
despise us? Were we not the first to speak of restoring our king?” But the men of Judah pressed even harder than the men of Israel.
I have pursued mine enemies, and destroyed them; and turned not again until I had consumed them.
I pursued my enemies and destroyed them; I did not turn back until they were consumed.
And the three mighty men
brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of
Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the LORD.
So the three mighty men broke through the
Philistine camp, drew water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem, and brought it
back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out to the LORD,
And unto
Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou art worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been
afflicted in all wherein my father was
afflicted.
Then the king said to
Abiathar the priest, “Go
back to your fields in Anathoth. Even though you deserve to die, I will not put you to death at this time, since you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and you suffered through all that my father suffered.”
And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and
slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit,
Abner the son of
Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and
Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.
The LORD will bring his
bloodshed back upon his own head, for without the knowledge of my father David he struck down two men more righteous and better than he when he put to the sword
Abner son of
Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and
Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army.
Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of
Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.
Their blood will come
back upon the heads of
Joab and his descendants
forever; but for David, his descendants, his house, and his throne, there shall be peace from the LORD
forever.”
And Shimei arose, and
saddled his
ass, and went to
Gath to Achish to seek his servants: and Shimei went, and brought his servants from
Gath.
So Shimei
saddled his
donkey and set out to Achish at
Gath in search of his slaves, and he brought them
back from
Gath.
The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou
didst to David my father: therefore the LORD shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head;
The king also said, “You know in your heart all the evil that you did to my father David. Therefore the LORD will bring your evil back upon your head.
And his house where he dwelt had another court within the
porch, which was of the like work. Solomon made also an house for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had taken to wife, like unto this
porch.
And the palace where Solomon would live, set further back, was of similar construction. He also made a palace like this hall for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had married.
