And Shallum the son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of
Korah, and his brethren, of the house of his father, the Korahites, were over the work of the service, keepers of the gates of the tabernacle: and their fathers, being over the host of the LORD, were keepers of the entry.
Shallum son of Kore, the son of Ebiasaph, the son of
Korah, and his relatives from the Korahites were assigned to guard the thresholds of the Tent, just as their fathers had
been assigned to guard the entrance to the dwelling of the LORD.
And
Phinehas the son of
Eleazar was the ruler over them in time past, and the Lord was with him.
In earlier times
Phinehas son of
Eleazar had
been in charge of the gatekeepers, and the LORD was with him.
Zelek the
Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite, the armourbearer of
Joab the son of Zeruiah,
And Elishama, and Beeliada, and Eliphalet.

And when the Philistines heard that David was
anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek David. And David heard of it, and went out against them.
When the Philistines heard that David had
been anointed king over all Israel, they all went in search of him; but David learned of this and went out to face them.
And I have
been with thee
whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make for you a name like the greatest in the land.
Now therefore let it please thee to
bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.
So now You have
been pleased to
bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue
forever before You. For You, O LORD, have blessed it, and it will be blessed
forever.”
He sent Hadoram his son to king David, to
enquire of his
welfare, and to
congratulate him, because he had fought against Hadarezer, and
smitten him; (for Hadarezer had war with Tou;) and with him all manner of vessels of gold and silver and brass.
he sent his son Hadoram to
greet King David and
bless him for fighting and defeating Hadadezer, who had
been at war with Tou. Hadoram brought all kinds of articles of gold and silver and bronze,
Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly
ashamed. And the king said,
Tarry at
Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.
When someone came and told David about his men, he sent messengers to meet them, since the men had
been thoroughly
humiliated. The king told them, “Stay in
Jericho until your beards have grown back, and then return.”
And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.
When the Arameans saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they sent messengers to bring more Arameans from beyond the Euphrates, with Shophach the commander of Hadadezer’s army leading them.
And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of
Ammon any more.
When Hadadezer’s subjects saw that they had
been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. So the Arameans were unwilling to help the
Ammonites anymore.
And David said to
Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from
Beer-
sheba even to
Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.
So David said to
Joab and the commanders of the troops, “Go and count the Israelites from
Beersheba to
Dan and bring me a report, so that I may know their number.”
Is not the LORD your God with you? and hath he not given you rest on every side? for he hath given the inhabitants of the land into mine hand; and the land is subdued before the LORD, and before his people.
“Is not the LORD your God with you, and has He not granted you rest on every side? For He has given the inhabitants of the land into my hand, and the land has been subdued before the LORD and His people.
And all that Samuel the
seer, and Saul the son of
Kish, and
Abner the son of
Ner, and
Joab the son of Zeruiah, had dedicated; and
whosoever had dedicated any thing, it was under the hand of Shelomith, and of his brethren.
Everything that had
been dedicated by Samuel the
seer, Saul son of
Kish,
Abner son of
Ner, and
Joab son of Zeruiah, along with everything else that was dedicated, was under the care of Shelomith and his brothers.
But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name, because thou hast been a man of war, and hast shed blood.
but God said to me, ‘You are not to build a house for My Name, because you are a man of war who has
spilled blood.’
And the LORD
magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed upon him such royal majesty as had not
been on any king before him in Israel.
The LORD highly
exalted Solomon in the sight of all Israel and bestowed on him royal majesty such as had not
been bestowed on any king in Israel before him.
Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.
therefore wisdom and knowledge have been granted to you. And I will also give you riches and wealth and honor unlike anything given to the kings before you or after you.”
And he appointed, according to the order of David his father, the courses of the priests to their service, and the Levites to their charges, to praise and minister before the priests, as the duty of every day required: the
porters also by their courses at every gate: for so had David the man of God commanded.
In keeping with the ordinances of his father David, Solomon appointed the divisions of the priests over their service, and the Levites for their duties to offer praise and to minister before the priests according to the daily requirement. He also appointed gatekeepers by their divisions at each gate, for this had been the command of David, the man of God.
And she gave the king an hundred and twenty talents of gold, and of spices great abundance, and precious stones: neither was there any such
spice as the queen of
Sheba gave king Solomon.
Then she gave the king 120 talents of gold, a great quantity of spices, and precious stones. There had never
been such spices as those the queen of
Sheba gave to King Solomon.
And the king made of the
algum trees terraces to the house of the LORD, and to the king’s palace, and harps and
psalteries for singers: and there were none such seen before in the land of Judah.
The king made the
algum wood into steps for the house of the LORD and for the king’s palace, and into lyres and harps for the singers. Never before had anything like them
been seen in the land of Judah.)
And twelve lions stood there on the one side and on the other upon the six steps. There was not the like made in any kingdom.
Twelve lions stood on the six steps, one at either end of each step. Nothing like this had ever been made for any kingdom.
And Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.
So to this day Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David.
And it came to pass, that in the fifth year of king
Rehoboam Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, because they had
transgressed against the LORD,
In the fifth year of
Rehoboam’s reign, because they had
been unfaithful to the LORD,
Shishak king of Egypt came up and attacked Jerusalem
Now for a long season Israel hath been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law.
For many years Israel has
been without the true God, without a priest to
instruct them, and without the law.
And
Jehoshaphat dwelt at Jerusalem: and he went out again through the people from
Beer-
sheba to mount Ephraim, and brought them back unto the LORD God of their fathers.
Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, and once again he went out among the people from
Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim and turned them back to the LORD, the God of their fathers.
So the Edomites revolted from under the hand of Judah unto this day. The same time also did
Libnah revolt from under his hand; because he had
forsaken the LORD God of his fathers.
So to this day
Edom has
been in rebellion against the hand of Judah. Likewise,
Libnah rebelled against his rule at the same time, because Jehoram had
forsaken the LORD, the God of his fathers.
And he returned to be
healed in
Jezreel because of the wounds which were given him at
Ramah, when he fought with
Hazael king of Syria. And
Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to see Jehoram the son of
Ahab at
Jezreel, because he was sick.
so he returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds they had inflicted on him at
Ramah when he fought against
Hazael king of
Aram. Then
Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to
Jezreel to visit
Joram son of
Ahab, because
Joram had
been wounded.
Moreover Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been king David’s, which were in the house of God.
Then Jehoiada the priest gave to the commanders of hundreds the spears and the large and small shields of King David that were in the house of God.
And all the people of the land
rejoiced: and the city was quiet, after that they had slain
Athaliah with the sword.
and all the people of the land
rejoiced. And the city was quiet, because
Athaliah had
been put to the sword.
Joash was seven years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name also was Zibiah of
Beer-
sheba.
Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem forty years. His mother’s name was Zibiah; she was from
Beersheba.
For the LORD brought Judah low because of
Ahaz king of Israel; for he made Judah naked, and
transgressed sore against the LORD.
For the LORD humbled Judah because
Ahaz king of Israel had thrown off restraint in Judah and had
been most unfaithful to the LORD.
But the priests were too few, so that they could not
flay all the burnt offerings: wherefore their brethren the Levites did help them, till the work was ended, and until the other priests had
sanctified themselves: for the Levites were more upright in heart to
sanctify themselves than the priests.
However, since there were not enough priests to skin all the burnt offerings, their
Levite brothers helped them until the work was finished and until the priests had
been consecrated. For the Levites had
been more
diligent in
consecrating themselves than the priests had
been.
And
Hezekiah rejoiced, and all the people, that God had prepared the people: for the thing was done suddenly.
Then
Hezekiah and all the people
rejoiced at what God had prepared for the people, because everything had
been accomplished so quickly.
For they could not keep it at that time, because the priests had not
sanctified themselves sufficiently, neither had the people gathered themselves together to Jerusalem.
since they had been unable to observe it at the regular time, because not enough priests had consecrated themselves and the people had not been gathered in Jerusalem.
So they established a decree to make
proclamation throughout all Israel, from
Beer-
sheba even to
Dan, that they should come to keep the
passover unto the LORD God of Israel at Jerusalem: for they had not done it of a long time in such sort as it was written.
So they established a decree to
circulate a
proclamation throughout Israel, from
Beersheba to
Dan, that the people should come to keep the
Passover of the LORD, the God of Israel, in Jerusalem. For they had not observed it as a nation as prescribed.
Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?
Do you not know what I and my fathers have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have the gods of these nations ever been able to deliver their land from my hand?
Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?
Who among all the gods of these nations that my fathers devoted to destruction has been able to deliver his people from my hand? How then can your God deliver you from my hand?
Now therefore let not
Hezekiah deceive you, nor
persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?
So now, do not let
Hezekiah deceive you, and do not let him mislead you like this. Do not believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has
been able to deliver his people from my hand or from the hand of my fathers. How much less will your God deliver you from my hand!”
And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of
Manasseh and Ephraim, and of all the
remnant of Israel, and of all Judah and Benjamin; and they returned to Jerusalem.
So they went to Hilkiah the high priest and gave him the money that had
been brought into the house of God, which the Levites at the doors had collected from the people of
Manasseh and Ephraim, from all the
remnant of Israel, Judah, and Benjamin, and from the people of Jerusalem.
And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the LORD given by Moses.
While they were bringing out the money that had been taken into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law of the LORD written by Moses.
And Shaphan carried the book to the king, and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it.
Then Shaphan brought the book to the king and reported, “Your servants are doing all that has been placed in their hands.
Go,
enquire of the LORD for me, and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah, concerning the words of the book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us, because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD, to do after all that is written in this book.
“Go and inquire of the LORD for me and for those remaining in Israel and Judah concerning the words in the book that has been found. For great is the wrath of the LORD that has been poured out on us because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD by doing all that is written in this book.”
Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah:
that this is what the LORD says: I am about to bring
calamity on this place and on its people, according to all the curses written in the book that has
been read in the presence of the king of Judah,
And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD.
And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the Levites—all the people small and great—and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
And there was no
passover like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet; neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a
passover as
Josiah kept, and the priests, and the Levites, and all Judah and Israel that were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
No such
Passover had
been observed in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet. None of the kings of Israel ever observed a
Passover like the one that
Josiah observed with the priests, the Levites, all Judah, the Israelites who were present, and the people of Jerusalem.
Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had
been carried away, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city;
Now these are the people of the province who came up from the captivity of the exiles carried away to Babylon by
Nebuchadnezzar its king. They returned to Jerusalem and Judah, each to his own town,
The children of Kirjath-arim, Chephirah, and Beeroth, seven hundred and forty and three.
the men of Kiriath-jearim, Chephirah, and Beeroth, 743;
From the first day of the seventh month began they to offer burnt offerings unto the LORD. But the foundation of the temple of the LORD was not yet laid.
On the first day of the seventh month, the Israelites began to offer burnt offerings to the LORD, although the foundation of the temple of the LORD had not been laid.
And they
sang together by course in praising and giving
thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people
shouted with a great
shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.
And they
sang responsively with praise and
thanksgiving to the LORD: “For He is good; for His loving devotion to Israel endures
forever.” Then all the people gave a great
shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD had
been laid.
Then they came to
Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up
hither.
they approached
Zerubbabel and the heads of the families, saying, “Let us build with you because, like you, we seek your God and have
been sacrificing to Him since the time of King Esar-haddon of Assyria, who brought us here.”
The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.
The letter you sent us has been translated and read in my presence.
And I commanded, and search hath
been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and
sedition have
been made therein.
I issued a decree, and a search was conducted. It was discovered that this city has revolted against kings from ancient times,
engaging in rebellion and
sedition.
There have
been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and
toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.
And mighty kings have ruled over Jerusalem and exercised authority over the whole region west of the Euphrates; and tribute, duty, and
toll were paid to them.
Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.
So this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of the house of God in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been under construction, but it has not yet been completed.”
So took the priests and the Levites the weight of the silver, and the gold, and the vessels, to bring them to Jerusalem unto the house of our God.
So the priests and Levites took charge of the silver and gold and sacred articles that had
been weighed out to be taken to the house of our God in Jerusalem.
Also the children of those that had
been carried away, which were come out of the captivity, offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, twelve bullocks for all Israel,
ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, twelve he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering unto the LORD.
Then the exiles who had returned from captivity sacrificed burnt offerings to the God of Israel: 12 bulls for all Israel, 96 rams, 77 lambs, and a sin offering of 12 male goats. All this was a burnt offering to the LORD.
Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the
Canaanites, the
Hittites, the
Perizzites, the Jebusites, the
Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the
Amorites.
After these things had
been accomplished, the leaders approached me and said, “The people of Israel, including the priests and Levites, have not kept themselves separate from the surrounding peoples whose abominations are like those of the
Canaanites,
Hittites,
Perizzites, Jebusites,
Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and
Amorites.
For they have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands:
yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath
been chief in this
trespass.
Indeed, the Israelites have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed has been mixed with the people of the land. And the leaders and officials have taken the lead in this unfaithfulness!”
Then were assembled unto me every one that
trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the
transgression of those that had
been carried away; and I sat
astonied until the evening sacrifice.
Then
everyone who
trembled at the words of the God of Israel gathered around me because of the unfaithfulness of the exiles, while I sat there in
horror until the evening offering.
Since the days of our fathers have we
been in a great
trespass unto this day; and for our
iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests,
been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a
spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
From the days of our fathers to this day, our guilt has
been great. Because of our
iniquities, we and our kings and priests have
been delivered into the hands of the kings of the earth and put to the sword and captivity, to
pillage and
humiliation, as we are this day.
And now for a little space grace hath
been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a
remnant to escape, and to give us a
nail in his holy place, that our God may
lighten our eyes, and give us a little
reviving in our
bondage.
But now, for a brief moment, grace has come from the LORD our God to preserve for us a
remnant and to give us a
stake in His holy place. Even in our
bondage, our God has given us new life and light to our eyes.
And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of
Elam, answered and said unto
Ezra, We have
trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.
Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, an
Elamite, said to
Ezra: “We have
been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the people of the land, yet in spite of this, there is hope for Israel.
Then arose
Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, and all Israel, to
swear that they should do according to this word. And they
sware.
So
Ezra got up and made the leading priests, Levites, and all Israel take an oath to do what had
been said. And they took the oath.
Then
Ezra rose up from before the house of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, nor drink water: for he
mourned because of the
transgression of them that had
been carried away.
Then
Ezra withdrew from before the house of God and walked to the chamber of Jehohanan son of Eliashib. And while he stayed there, he
ate no food and
drank no water, because he was
mourning over the unfaithfulness of the exiles.
And that
whosoever would not come within three days, according to the counsel of the princes and the elders, all his substance should be
forfeited, and himself separated from the congregation of those that had
been carried away.
Whoever failed to appear within three days would
forfeit all his property, according to the counsel of the leaders and elders, and would himself be expelled from the assembly of the exiles.
And
Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have
transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the
trespass of Israel.
Then
Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have
been unfaithful by marrying foreign women, adding to the guilt of Israel.
But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the
uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.
but if you return to Me and keep and practice My commandments, then even if your exiles have
been banished to the
farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for My Name.’
And it came to pass in the month
Nisan, in the
twentieth year of
Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not
been beforetime sad in his presence.
Now in the month of
Nisan, in the
twentieth year of King
Artaxerxes, when wine was set before him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had never
been sad in his presence,
And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be
sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’
sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
and replied to the king, “May the king live
forever! Why should I not be
sad when the city where my fathers are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have
been destroyed by fire?”
So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
After I had arrived in Jerusalem and had been there three days,
And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the
dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.
So I went out at night through the Valley Gate toward the Well of the Serpent and the Dung Gate, and I
inspected the walls of Jerusalem that had
been broken down and the gates that had
been destroyed by fire.
Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned down. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”
I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this
usury.
I, as well as my brothers and my servants, have
been lending the people money and grain. Please, let us stop this
usury.
Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the
hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.
Please restore to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves, and houses, along with the percentage of the money, grain, new wine, and oil that you have
been assessing them.”
But the former governors that had
been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver;
yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.
The governors before me had
heavily burdened the people, taking from them bread and wine
plus forty shekels of silver. Their servants also
oppressed the people, but I did not do this because of my fear of God.
Therefore was he
hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
He had
been hired to
intimidate me so that I would sin by doing as he suggested, so they could give me a bad name in order to discredit me.
And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and
disheartened, for they realized that this task had
been accomplished by our God.
Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the
porters and the singers and the Levites were appointed,
When the wall had been rebuilt and I had set the doors in place, the gatekeepers, singers, and Levites were appointed.
Now the city was large and great: but the people were few therein, and the houses were not builded.
Now the city was large and
spacious, but there were few people in it, and the houses had not yet
been rebuilt.

The men of Kirjath-jearim, Chephirah, and Beeroth, seven hundred forty and three.
the men of Kiriath-jearim, Chephirah, and Beeroth, 743;
And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great
mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.
Then all the people began to eat and drink, to send out portions, and to
rejoice greatly, because they understood the words that had
been made known to them.
And at Hazar-shual, and at
Beer-
sheba, and in the villages thereof,
in Hazar-shual; in
Beersheba and its villages;
Zanoah,
Adullam, and in their villages, at
Lachish, and the fields thereof, at Azekah, and in the villages thereof. And they dwelt from
Beer-
sheba unto the valley of
Hinnom.
Zanoah,
Adullam, and their villages; in
Lachish and its fields; and in Azekah and its villages. So they settled from
Beersheba all the way to the Valley of
Hinnom.
And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto
Tobiah:
Now before this, Eliashib the priest, a relative of
Tobiah, had
been put in charge of the storerooms of the house of our God
And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.
I also learned that because the portions for the Levites had not been given to them, all the Levites and singers responsible for performing the service had gone back to their own fields.
Then
contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God
forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.
So I
rebuked the officials and asked, “Why has the house of God
been neglected?” Then I gathered the Levites and singers together and stationed them at their posts,
After these things, when the wrath of king
Ahasuerus was
appeased, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what was decreed against her.
Some time later, when the anger of King
Xerxes had
subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had done, and what had
been decreed against her.
Who had
been carried away from Jerusalem with the captivity which had
been carried away with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom
Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.
He had
been carried into exile from Jerusalem by
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon among those taken
captive with Jeconiah king of Judah.
So it came to pass, when the king’s commandment and his decree was heard, and when many maidens were gathered together unto
Shushan the palace, to the
custody of Hegai, that
Esther was brought also unto the king’s house, to the
custody of Hegai, keeper of the women.
When the king’s command and edict had
been proclaimed, many young women gathered at the citadel of
Susa under the care of Hegai.
Esther was also taken to the palace and placed under the care of Hegai, the
custodian of the women.
Now when every
maid’s turn was come to go in to king
Ahasuerus, after that she had
been twelve months, according to the manner of the women, (for so were the days of their purifications accomplished, to wit, six months with oil of
myrrh, and six months with sweet odours, and with other things for the
purifying of the women;)
In the twelve months before her turn to go to King
Xerxes, the
harem regulation required each young woman to receive beauty treatments with oil of
myrrh for six months, and then with perfumes and cosmetics for another six months.
And when
inquisition was made of the matter, it was found out; therefore they were both
hanged on a tree: and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king.
After the report had
been investigated and
verified, both officials were
hanged on the
gallows. And all this was recorded in the Book of the Chronicles in the presence of the king.
All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that
whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden
sceptre, that he may live: but I have not
been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
“All the royal officials and the people of the king’s provinces know that one law applies to every man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned—that he be put to death. Only if the king extends the gold
scepter may that person live. But I have not
been summoned to appear before the king for the past thirty days.”
And the king said, What honour and dignity hath
been done to
Mordecai for this? Then said the king’s servants that ministered unto him, There is nothing done for him.
The king inquired, “What honor or dignity has
been bestowed on
Mordecai for this act?” “Nothing has
been done for him,” replied the king’s attendants.
For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had
been sold for
bondmen and
bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not
countervail the king’s damage.
For my people and I have
been sold out to destruction, death, and
annihilation. If we had merely
been sold as menservants and maidservants, I would have remained silent, because no such distress would
justify burdening the king.”
For now should I have
lain still and
been quiet, I should have
slept: then had I
been at rest,
For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be
asleep and at rest
Or as an hidden untimely birth I had not been; as infants which never saw light.
Or why was I not hidden like a
stillborn child, like an infant who never sees
daylight?
Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?
Consider now, I
plead: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Or where have the upright
been destroyed?
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are
swallowed up.
For then it would
outweigh the sand of the seas— no wonder my words have
been rash.
