And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be
grievous in thy sight because of the
lad, and because of thy
bondwoman; in all that
Sarah hath said unto thee,
hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed about the
boy and your
maidservant.
Listen to everything that
Sarah tells you, for through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.
And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a
bottle of water, and gave it unto
Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and
wandered in the wilderness of Beer-
sheba.
Early in the morning, Abraham got up, took bread and a skin of water, put them on
Hagar’s shoulders, and sent her away with the
boy. She left and
wandered in the Wilderness of
Beersheba.
And the water was spent in the
bottle, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs.
When the water in the skin was gone, she left the boy under one of the bushes.
And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a
bowshot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and
wept.
Then she went off and sat down nearby, about a
bowshot away, for she said, “I cannot bear to watch the
boy die!” And as she sat nearby, she lifted up her voice and
wept.
And God heard the voice of the
lad; and the angel of God called
Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee,
Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the
lad where he is.
Then God heard the voice of the
boy, and the angel of God called to
Hagar from heaven, “What is wrong,
Hagar? Do not be afraid, for God has heard the voice of the
boy where he lies.
Arise, lift up the
lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation.
Get up, lift up the boy, and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.”
And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the
bottle with water, and gave the
lad drink.
Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.
And God was with the
lad; and he grew, and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.
And God was with the boy, and he grew up and settled in the wilderness and became a great archer.
And Abraham said unto his young men,
Abide ye here with the
ass; and I and the
lad will go
yonder and worship, and come again to you,
“Stay here with the
donkey,” Abraham told his servants. “The
boy and I will go over there to worship, and then we will return to you.”
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the
lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
“Do not lay a hand on the
boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you have not
withheld your only son from me.”
And the
boys grew: and
Esau was a
cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.
When the
boys grew up,
Esau became a skillful hunter, a man of the field, while Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home.
And he returned unto his brethren, and said, The child is not; and I,
whither shall I go?
returned to his brothers, and said, “The boy is gone! What am I going to do?”
And
Reuben answered them, saying, Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also his blood is required.
And
Reuben responded, “Didn’t I tell you not to sin against the
boy? But you would not
listen. Now we must account for his blood!”
And Judah said unto Israel his father, Send the
lad with me, and we will arise and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and also our little ones.
And Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me, and we will go at once, so that we may live and not die—neither we, nor you, nor our children.
And we said unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one; and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.
And we answered, ‘We have an elderly father and a younger brother, the child of his old age. The boy’s brother is dead. He is the only one of his mother’s sons left, and his father loves him.’
And we said unto my lord, The
lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father, his father would die.
So we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father. If he were to leave, his father would die.’
Now therefore when I come to thy servant my father, and the
lad be not with us; seeing that his life is bound up in the
lad’s life;
So if the
boy is not with us when I return to your servant, and if my father, whose life is
wrapped up in the
boy’s life,
It shall come to pass, when he
seeth that the
lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy servants shall bring down the gray hairs of thy servant our father with sorrow to the grave.
sees that the
boy is not with us, he will die. Then your servants will have brought the gray hair of your servant our father down to
Sheol in sorrow.
For thy servant became
surety for the
lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the
blame to my father for ever.
Indeed, your servant
guaranteed the
boy’s safety to my father, saying, ‘If I do not return him to you, I will bear the guilt before you, my father, all my life.’
Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servant
abide instead of the
lad a
bondman to my lord; and let the
lad go up with his brethren.
Now please let your servant stay here as my lord’s slave in place of the boy. Let him return with his brothers.
For how shall I go up to my father, and the
lad be not with me? lest
peradventure I see the evil that shall come on my father.
For how can I go back to my father without the
boy? I could not bear to see the misery that would
overwhelm him.”
The Angel which redeemed me from all evil,
bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.
the angel who has redeemed me from all
harm— may He
bless these
boys. And may they be called by my name and the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, and may they grow into a multitude upon the earth.”
But the
midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.
The
midwives, however, feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had
instructed; they let the
boys live.
And the king of Egypt called for the
midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?
So the king of Egypt summoned the
midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the
boys live?”
And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the
babe wept. And she had
compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children.
When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the little
boy was crying. So she had
compassion on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrew children.”
And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, Go. And the
maid went and called the child’s mother.
“Go
ahead,” Pharaoh’s daughter told her. And the
girl went and called the
boy’s mother.
And Pharaoh’s daughter said unto her, Take this child away, and
nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages. And the woman took the child, and
nursed it.
Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and
nurse him for me, and I will pay your wages.” So the woman took the
boy and
nursed him.
Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
So now, kill all the boys, as well as every woman who has had relations with a man,
For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no
razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a
Nazarite unto God from the
womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.
For behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. And no
razor shall come over his head, because the
boy will be a
Nazirite to God from the
womb, and he will begin the
deliverance of Israel from the hand of the Philistines.”
But he said unto me, Behold, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing: for the child shall be a
Nazarite to God from the
womb to the day of his death.
But he said to me, ‘Behold, you will conceive and give birth to a son. Now, therefore, do not drink wine or strong drink, and do not eat anything unclean, because the
boy will be a
Nazirite to God from the
womb until the day of his death.’”
Then
Manoah intreated the LORD, and said, O my Lord, let the man of God which thou
didst send come again unto us, and teach us what we shall do unto the child that shall be born.
Then
Manoah prayed to the LORD, “Please, O Lord, let the man of God You sent us come to us again to teach us how to raise the
boy who is to be born.”
And
Manoah said, Now let thy words come to pass. How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him?
Then
Manoah asked, “When your words come to pass, what will be the
boy’s rule of life and mission?”
And the woman bare a son, and called his name
Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him.
So the woman gave birth to a son and named him
Samson. The
boy grew, and the LORD blessed him.
But
Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be
weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there
abide for ever.
but
Hannah did not go. “After the
boy is
weaned,” she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear before the LORD and to stay there permanently.”
And when she had
weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one
ephah of flour, and a
bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in
Shiloh: and the child was young.
Once she had
weaned him,
Hannah took the
boy with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an
ephah of flour, and a skin of wine. Though the
boy was still young, she brought him to the house of the LORD at
Shiloh.
And when they had slaughtered the bull, they brought the
boy to
Eli.
For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him,
Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
I now
dedicate the
boy to the LORD. For as long as he lives, he is dedicated to the LORD.” So they worshiped the LORD there.
And Elkanah went to
Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto the LORD before
Eli the priest.
Then Elkanah went home to
Ramah, but the
boy began ministering to the LORD before
Eli the priest.
But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child,
girded with a linen
ephod.
Now Samuel was ministering before the LORD—a
boy wearing a linen
ephod.
And the LORD visited
Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.
So the LORD attended to
Hannah, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the
boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.
And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men.
And the
boy Samuel continued to grow in
stature and in favor with the LORD and with man.
And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before
Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
And the
boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before
Eli. Now in those days the word of the LORD was rare and visions were
scarce.
And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to
Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou
didst call me. And
Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.
Once again, for the third time, the LORD called to Samuel. He got up, went to
Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you have called me.” Then
Eli realized that it was the LORD who was calling the
boy.
And she named the child I-chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.
And she named the boy Ichabod, saying, “The glory has departed from Israel,” because the ark of God had been captured and her father-in-law and her husband had been killed.
And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this
Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
But Saul replied, “You cannot go out against this
Philistine to fight him. You are just a
boy, and he has been a
warrior from his youth.”
And when the
Philistine looked about, and saw David, he
disdained him: for he was but a youth, and
ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
And, behold, I will send a
lad, saying, Go, find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the
lad, Behold, the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no
hurt; as the LORD liveth.
Then I will send a boy and say, ‘Go, find the arrows!’ Now, if I expressly say to him, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you; bring them,’ then come, because as surely as the LORD lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger.
And it came to pass in the morning, that
Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little
lad with him.
In the morning
Jonathan went out to the field for the appointment with David, and a small
boy was with him.
And he said unto his
lad, Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the
lad ran, he shot an
arrow beyond him.
He said to the
boy, “Run and find the arrows I shoot.” And as the
boy ran,
Jonathan shot an
arrow beyond him.
But the
lad knew not any thing: only
Jonathan and David knew the matter.
But the
boy did not know anything; only
Jonathan and David knew the arrangement.
And
Jonathan gave his artillery unto his
lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them to the city.
Then
Jonathan gave his
equipment to the
boy and said, “Go, take it back to the city.”
David therefore
besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.
David
pleaded with God for the
boy. He fasted and went into his house and spent the night lying in
sackcloth on the ground.
That
Hadad fled, he and certain Edomites of his father’s servants with him, to go into Egypt;
Hadad being yet a little child.
But
Hadad, still just a young
boy, had fled to Egypt, along with some Edomites who were servants of his father.
And take with thee ten
loaves, and cracknels, and a
cruse of honey, and go to him: he shall tell thee what shall become of the child.
Take with you ten
loaves of bread, some cakes, and a
jar of honey, and go to him. He will tell you what will become of the
boy.”
And
Jeroboam’s wife arose, and departed, and came to Tirzah: and when she came to the
threshold of the door, the child died;
Then
Jeroboam’s wife got up and departed for Tirzah, and as soon as she
stepped over the
threshold of the house, the
boy died.
And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and
cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again.
Then he stretched himself out over the child three times and
cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, please let this
boy’s life return to him!”
And he went up from thence unto
Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and
mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou
bald head; go up, thou
bald head.
And he turned back, and looked on them, and
cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and
tare forty and two children of them.
Then he turned around, looked at them, and called down a
curse on them in the name of the LORD. Suddenly two female bears came out of the woods and
mauled forty-two of the
boys.
And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till
noon, and then died.
After the servant had
picked him up and carried him to his mother, the
boy sat on her
lap until
noon, and then he died.
Then he said to Gehazi,
Gird up thy loins, and take my staff in thine hand, and go thy way: if thou meet any man,
salute him not; and if any
salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.
So
Elisha said to Gehazi, “
Tie up your garment, take my staff in your hand, and go! If you meet
anyone, do not
greet him, and if
anyone greets you, do not answer him. Then lay my staff on the
boy’s face.”
And the mother of the child said, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.
And the mother of the
boy said, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you
yourself live, I will not leave you.” So he got up and followed her.
And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not
awaked.
Gehazi went on
ahead of them and laid the staff on the
boy’s face, but there was no sound or
response. So he went back to meet
Elisha and told him, “The
boy has not
awakened.”
And when
Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was dead, and laid upon his bed.
When
Elisha reached the house, there was the
boy lying dead on his bed.
And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child waxed warm.
Then
Elisha got on the bed and lay on the
boy, mouth to mouth, eye to eye, and hand to hand. As he stretched himself out over him, the
boy’s body became warm.
Then he returned, and walked in the house to and
fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child
sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.
Elisha turned away and
paced back and forth across the room. Then he got on the bed and stretched himself out over the
boy again, and the
boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night in which it was said, There is a man child conceived.
“May the day of my birth perish, and the night it was said, ‘A boy is conceived.’
Yea, young children
despised me; I arose, and they spake against me.
Even little
boys scorn me; when I appear, they
deride me.
For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be
forsaken of both her kings.
For before the
boy knows enough to
reject evil and choose good, the land of the two kings you
dread will be laid waste.
For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the
spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.
For before the
boy knows how to cry ‘Father’ or ‘Mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the
plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.”
Before she
travailed, she brought forth; before her pain came, she was delivered of a man child.
“Before she was in labor, she gave birth; before she was in pain, she delivered a boy.
They took the young men to
grind, and the children fell under the wood.
Young men
toil at millstones;
boys stagger under loads of wood.
And they have cast lots for my people; and have given a
boy for an
harlot, and sold a
girl for wine, that they might drink.
And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof.
And the streets of the city will be filled with boys and girls playing there.”
Then Herod, when he saw that he was
mocked of the wise men, was exceeding
wroth, and sent forth, and
slew all the children that were in
Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had
diligently enquired of the wise men.
When Herod saw that he had been outwitted by the
Magi, he was filled with
rage. Sending orders, he put to death all the
boys in
Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, according to the time he had learned from the
Magi.
Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and
perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him
hither to me.
“O unbelieving and
perverse generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the
boy here to Me.”
And Jesus
rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour.
Then Jesus
rebuked the
demon, and it came out of the
boy, and he was
healed from that moment.
He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.
“O unbelieving generation!” Jesus replied. “How long must I remain with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy to Me.”
So they brought him, and seeing Jesus, the spirit immediately threw the
boy into a
convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around,
foaming at the mouth.
And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.
Jesus asked the
boy’s father, “How long has this been with him?” “From
childhood,” he said.
And
straightway the father of the child
cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.
Immediately the
boy’s father
cried out, “I do believe; help my unbelief!”
And the spirit
cried, and rent him
sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead;
insomuch that many said, He is dead.
After
shrieking and
convulsing him violently, the spirit came out. The
boy became like a
corpse, so that many said, “He is dead.”
And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus
tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
When those days were over and they were returning home, the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, but His parents were unaware He had stayed.
And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and
tare him. And Jesus
rebuked the unclean spirit, and
healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.
Even while the
boy was approaching, the
demon slammed him to the ground in a
convulsion. But Jesus
rebuked the unclean spirit,
healed the
boy, and gave him back to his father.
And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.
And while he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was alive.
There is a
lad here, which hath five barley
loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
“Here is a
boy with five barley
loaves and two small fish. But what difference will these make among so many?”
Moses therefore gave unto you
circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day
circumcise a man.
But because Moses gave you
circumcision, you
circumcise a
boy on the Sabbath (not that it is from Moses, but from the patriarchs.)
If a man on the sabbath day receive
circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye
angry at me, because I have made a man every
whit whole on the sabbath day?
If a
boy can be
circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses will not be broken, why are you
angry with Me for making the whole man well on the Sabbath?
And they brought the young man alive, and were not a little comforted.
And the people were greatly relieved to take the boy home alive.
