can He also give bread or supply His people with meat?”

Canaan, and the land was
polluted with blood.

they have ears, but cannot hear; they have noses, but cannot smell;

offend them.

can make them
stumble.

Zion, which
cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.

Zion. It
cannot be moved; it abides
forever.

afore it groweth up:

withers before it
can grow,

can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where
can I
flee from Your presence?

mortal man, who
cannot save.

futile it is to spread the net where any bird
can see it!

rubies: and all the things thou
canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

A man cannot be established through wickedness, but the righteous cannot be uprooted.
The spirit of a man will
sustain his
infirmity; but a wounded spirit who
can bear?
The spirit of a man
can endure his sickness, but who
can survive a broken spirit?
Most men will
proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who
can find?
Many a man proclaims his loving devotion, but who
can find a
trustworthy man?

Who
can say, “I have kept my heart pure; I am
cleansed from my sin”?

A man’s steps are from the LORD, so how
can anyone understand his own way?
The spirit of man is the
candle of the LORD, searching all the inward parts of the
belly.
The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, searching out his inmost being.

stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I
awake? I will seek it yet again.
“They struck me, but I feel no pain! They beat me, but I did not know it! When
can I
wake up to search for another drink?”
For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the
candle of the wicked shall be put out.

extinguished.

calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin of them both?
For they will bring sudden destruction. Who knows what ruin they can bring?
The heaven for height, and the earth for depth, and the heart of kings is unsearchable.
As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings cannot be searched.

forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone.
Through
patience a ruler
can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue
can break a bone.

conceit than seven men that
can render a reason.

discreetly.

envy?

can withstand jealousy?

glad, that I may answer him that reproacheth me.

A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer.
A servant
cannot be corrected by words alone; though he understands, he will not
respond.
Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?
Who has ascended to heaven and come down? Who has gathered the wind in His hands? Who has bound up the waters in His
cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name, and what is the name of His Son— surely you know!
There be three things which are too wonderful for me,
yea, four which I know not:
There are three things too wonderful for me, four that I cannot understand:
For three things the earth is disquieted, and for four which it cannot bear:
Under three things the earth trembles, under four it cannot bear up:
The
spider taketh hold with her hands, and is in kings’ palaces.
and the
lizard can be caught in one’s hands, yet it is found in the palaces of kings.
A wife of noble character, who
can find? She is far more precious than
rubies.
She sees that her gain is good, and her lamp is not
extinguished at night.
Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall
rejoice in time to come.
Strength and honor are her clothing, and she
can laugh at the days to come.
All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
All things are
wearisome, more than one
can describe; the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear content with hearing.
Is there any thing
whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.
Is there a case where one can say, “Look, this is new”? It has already existed in the ages before us.
That which is
crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting
cannot be numbered.
And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.
Then I turned to consider wisdom and madness and folly; for what more can the king’s successor do than what has already been accomplished?
For apart from Him, who can eat and who can find enjoyment?
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set
eternity in the hearts of men, yet they
cannot fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end.
I know that,
whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing
can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.
I know that everything God does endures
forever; nothing
can be added to it or taken from it. God does it so that they should fear Him.
Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should
rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?
I have seen that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot. For who can bring him to see what will come after him?
For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but
woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up.
For if one falls down, his companion
can lift him up; but
pity the one who falls without another to help him up!
Again, if two lie together, then they have heat: but how can one be warm alone?
Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone?
And if one prevail against him, two shall
withstand him; and a
threefold cord is not quickly broken.
And though one may be overpowered, two can resist. Moreover, a cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and
vexation of spirit.
Better what the eye
can see than the wandering of desire. This too is
futile and a pursuit of the wind.
That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he
contend with him that is mightier than he.
Whatever exists was named long ago, and what happens to a man is
foreknown; but he
cannot contend with one stronger than he.
For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?
For who knows what is good for a man during the few days in which he passes through his fleeting life like a shadow? Who can tell a man what will come after him under the sun?
Consider the work of God: for who
can make that straight, which he hath made
crooked?
Consider the work of God: Who
can straighten what He has bent?
In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of
adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.
In the day of prosperity, be joyful, but in the day of
adversity, consider this: God has made one of these along with the other, so that a man
cannot discover anything that will come after him.
That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?
What exists is out of reach and very deep. Who
can fathom it?
Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou?
For the king’s word is supreme, and who can say to him, “What are you doing?”
For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be?
Since no one knows what will happen, who can tell him what is to come?
There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it.
As no man has power over the wind to contain it, so no one has authority over his day of death. As no one can be discharged in wartime, so wickedness will not release those who practice it.
Then I
beheld all the work of God, that a man
cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it;
yea further; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.
I saw every work of God, and that a man is unable to
comprehend the work that is done under the sun.
Despite his efforts to search it out, he
cannot find its meaning; even if the wise man claims to know, he is unable to
comprehend.
A
fool also is full of words: a man
cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who
can tell him?
Yet the
fool multiplies words. No one knows what is coming, and who
can tell him what will come after him?
As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the
womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.
As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the bones are formed in a mother’s
womb, so you
cannot understand the work of God, the Maker of all things.
Many waters
cannot quench love, neither
can the floods
drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be
contemned.
Mighty waters
cannot quench love; rivers
cannot sweep it away. If a man were to give all the wealth of his house for love, his offer would be utterly
scorned.
Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an
abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of
assemblies, I
cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.
Bring your worthless offerings no more; your incense is
detestable to Me— your New Moons, Sabbaths, and convocations. I
cannot endure iniquity in a solemn assembly.
And the LORD will
create upon every dwelling place of mount
Zion, and upon her
assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the
shining of a flaming fire by night: for upon all the glory shall be a defence.
Then the LORD will
create over all of Mount
Zion and over her
assemblies a cloud of smoke by day and a
glowing flame of fire by night. For over all the glory there will be a
canopy,
Let us go up against Judah, and
vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal:
‘Let us
invade Judah,
terrorize it, and divide it among ourselves. Then we
can install the son of Tabeal over it as king.’
For the LORD of hosts hath purposed, and who shall
disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?
The LORD of Hosts has purposed, and who
can thwart Him? His hand is outstretched, so who
can turn it back?
And they shall turn the rivers far away; and the
brooks of defence shall be
emptied and dried up: the reeds and flags shall wither.
The
canals will
stink; the streams of Egypt will
trickle and dry up; the reeds and rushes will wither.
Surely the princes of Zoan are fools, the counsel of the wise counsellors of Pharaoh is become
brutish: how say ye unto Pharaoh, I am the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings?
The princes of Zoan are mere fools; Pharaoh’s wise counselors give senseless advice. How can you say to Pharaoh, “I am one of the wise, a son of eastern kings”?
Neither shall there be any work for Egypt, which the head or tail, branch or
rush, may do.
There is nothing Egypt can do— head or tail, palm or reed.
In that day shall five cities in the land of Egypt speak the language of
Canaan, and
swear to the LORD of hosts; one shall be called, The city of destruction.
In that day five cities in the land of Egypt will speak the language of
Canaan and
swear allegiance to the LORD of Hosts. One of them will be called the City of the Sun.
And the inhabitant of this isle shall say in that day, Behold, such is our expectation,
whither we
flee for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria: and how shall we escape?
And on that day the dwellers of this coastland will say, ‘See what has happened to our source of hope, those to whom we fled for help and
deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then
can we escape?’”
And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.
He stretched out his hand over the sea, he
shook the kingdoms: the LORD hath given a commandment against the merchant city, to destroy the strong holds thereof.
The LORD has stretched out His hand over the sea; He has made kingdoms
tremble. He has given a command that the strongholds of
Canaan be destroyed.
I the LORD do keep it; I will water it every moment: lest any
hurt it, I will keep it night and day.
I, the LORD, am its keeper; I water it continually. I guard it night and day so no one
can disturb it;
For the bed is shorter than that a man
can stretch himself on it: and the covering narrower than that he
can wrap himself in it.
Indeed, the bed is too short to stretch out on, and the
blanket too small to
wrap around you.
