How say ye, We are mighty and strong men for the war?
How can you say, ‘We are warriors, mighty men ready for battle’?
Wherefore gloriest thou in the valleys, thy flowing valley, O
backsliding daughter? that trusted in her treasures, saying, Who shall come unto me?
Why do you
boast of your valleys— your valleys so fruitful, O faithless daughter? You trust in your riches and say, ‘Who
can come against me?’
For thus saith the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup have
assuredly drunken; and art thou he that shall altogether go unpunished? thou shalt not go unpunished, but thou shalt surely drink of it.
For this is what the LORD says: “If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it, can you possibly remain unpunished? You will not go unpunished, for you must drink it too.
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the
habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may
appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will
appoint me the time? and who is that
shepherd that will stand before me?
Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan to the watered pasture. For in an instant I will
chase Edom from her land. Who is the chosen one I will
appoint for this? For who is like Me, and who
can challenge Me? What
shepherd can stand against Me?”
Concerning Damascus.
Hamath is confounded, and Arpad: for they have heard evil
tidings: they are
fainthearted; there is sorrow on the sea; it
cannot be quiet.
Concerning Damascus: “
Hamath and Arpad are put to shame, for they have heard a bad report; they are
agitated like the sea; their
anxiety cannot be calmed.
Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan unto the
habitation of the strong: but I will make them suddenly run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may
appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will
appoint me the time? and who is that
shepherd that will stand before me?
Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan to the watered pasture. For in an instant I will
chase Babylon from her land. Who is the chosen one I will
appoint for this? For who is like Me, and who
can challenge Me? What
shepherd can stand against Me?”
Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed:
howl for her; take
balm for her pain, if so she may be
healed.
Suddenly Babylon has fallen and been
shattered.
Wail for her; get her
balm for her pain; perhaps she
can be
healed.
And the basons, and the firepans, and the
bowls, and the caldrons, and the
candlesticks, and the spoons, and the cups; that which was of gold in gold, and that which was of silver in silver, took the captain of the guard away.
The captain of the guard also took away the basins, censers,
sprinkling bowls, pots, lampstands, pans, and drink offering
bowls—anything made of pure gold or fine silver.
The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand: they are
wreathed, and come up upon my neck: he hath made my strength to fall, the Lord hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up.
My transgressions are bound into a yoke,
knit together by His hand; they are
draped over my neck, and the Lord has broken my strength. He has delivered me into the hands of those I
cannot withstand.
What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I
liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of
Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who
can heal thee?
What
can I say for you? To what
can I compare you, O Daughter of Jerusalem? To what
can I
liken you, that I may
console you, O Virgin Daughter of
Zion? For your wound is as deep as the sea. Who
can ever
heal you?
He hath
hedged me about, that I
cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy.
He has walled me in so I
cannot escape; He has
weighed me down with chains.
Thou hast covered
thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.
You have covered
Yourself with a cloud that no prayer
can pass through.
They
cried unto them, Depart ye; it is unclean; depart, depart, touch not: when they fled away and
wandered, they said among the heathen, They shall no more
sojourn there.
“Go away! Unclean!” men
shouted at them. “Away, away! Do not touch us!” So they fled and
wandered. Among the nations it was said, “They
can stay here no longer.”
They
hunt our steps, that we
cannot go in our streets: our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come.
They
stalked our every step, so that we could not walk in our streets. Our end drew near, our time ran out, for our end had come!
Not to many people of a strange speech and of an hard language, whose words thou
canst not understand. Surely, had I sent thee to them, they would have
hearkened unto thee.
not to the many peoples of unfamiliar speech and difficult language whose words you
cannot understand. Surely if I had sent you to them, they would have
listened to you.
But thou, O son of man, behold, they shall put bands upon thee, and shall bind thee with them, and thou shalt not go out among them:
And you, son of man, they will
tie with ropes, and you will be bound so that you
cannot go out among the people.
And, behold, I will lay bands upon thee, and thou shalt not turn thee from one side to another, till thou hast ended the days of thy siege.
Now behold, I will
tie you up with ropes so you
cannot turn from side to side until you have finished the days of your siege.
They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their
bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity.
They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will seem unclean. Their silver and gold
cannot save them in the day of the wrath of the LORD. They
cannot satisfy their appetites or fill their stomachs with wealth, for it became the
stumbling block that brought their iniquity.
In their sight shalt thou bear it upon thy shoulders, and carry it forth in the
twilight: thou shalt cover thy face, that thou see not the ground: for I have set thee for a sign unto the house of Israel.
And as they watch, lift your bags to your shoulder and take them out at
dusk; cover your face so that you
cannot see the land. For I have made you a sign to the house of Israel.”
And the prince that is among them shall bear upon his shoulder in the
twilight, and shall go forth: they shall
dig through the wall to carry out thereby: he shall cover his face, that he see not the ground with his eyes.
And at
dusk the prince among them will lift his bags to his shoulder and go out. They will
dig through the wall to bring him out. He will cover his face so he
cannot see the land.
But I will leave a few men of them from the sword, from the famine, and from the
pestilence; that they may declare all their abominations among the heathen
whither they come; and they shall know that I am the LORD.
But I will
spare a few of them from sword and famine and plague, so that in the nations to which they go, they
can recount all their abominations. Then they will know that I am the LORD.”
Shall wood be taken thereof to do any work? or will men take a pin of it to
hang any vessel
thereon?
Can wood be taken from it to make something useful? Or
can one make from it a
peg on which to
hang utensils?
Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devoureth both the ends of it, and the midst of it is burned. Is it meet for any work?
No, it is cast into the fire for fuel. The fire devours both ends, and the middle is
charred.
Can it be useful for anything?
Behold, when it was whole, it was meet for no work: how much less shall it be meet yet for any work, when the fire hath
devoured it, and it is burned?
Even when it was whole, it could not be made useful. How much less
can it ever be useful when the fire has consumed it and
charred it!
And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto Jerusalem; Thy birth and thy
nativity is of the land of
Canaan; thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother an Hittite.
and tell her that this is what the Lord GOD says to Jerusalem: Your origin and your birth were in the land of the
Canaanites. Your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite.
So you extended your
promiscuity to
Chaldea, the land of merchants—but even with this you were not satisfied!
But he rebelled against him in sending his ambassadors into Egypt, that they might give him horses and much people. Shall he
prosper? shall he escape that doeth such things? or shall he break the covenant, and be delivered?
But this king rebelled against Babylon by sending his envoys to Egypt to ask for horses and a large army. Will he
flourish? Will the one who does such things escape?
Can he break a covenant and yet escape?’
Can thine heart
endure, or
can thine hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the LORD have spoken it, and will do it.
Will your courage
endure or your hands be strong in the day I deal with you? I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will act.
and casks of wine from Izal for your wares. Wrought iron,
cassia, and sweet
cane were exchanged for your
merchandise.
Haran, and
Canneh, and
Eden, the merchants of
Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad, were thy merchants.
Haran,
Canneh, and
Eden traded with you, and so did the merchants of
Sheba, Asshur, and Chilmad.
Behold, thou art wiser than Daniel; there is no secret that they can hide from thee:
Behold, you are wiser than Daniel; no secret is hidden from you!
Son of man, speak unto Pharaoh king of Egypt, and to his multitude; Whom art thou like in thy greatness?
“Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his multitude: ‘Who can be compared to your greatness?
Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins be upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live?
Now as for you, son of man, tell the house of Israel that this is what they have said: ‘Our transgressions and our sins are heavy upon us, and we are wasting away because of them! How can we live?’
And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not.
Indeed, you are to them like a singer of love songs with a beautiful voice, who
skillfully plays an instrument. They hear your words but do not put them into practice.
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against the
shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the
shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I am against the
shepherds, and I will demand from them My flock and remove them from tending the flock, so that they
can no longer feed themselves. For I will deliver My flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.’
And he said unto me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord GOD, thou knowest.
Then He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones come to life?” “O Lord GOD,” I replied, “only You know.”
And there were made on them, on the doors of the temple, cherubims and palm trees, like as were made upon the walls; and there were thick planks upon the face of the
porch without.
Cherubim and palm trees like those on the walls were carved on the doors of the outer sanctuary, and there was a wooden
canopy outside, on the front of the
portico.
And there were narrow windows and palm trees on the one side and on the other side, on the sides of the
porch, and upon the side chambers of the house, and thick planks.
There were
beveled windows and palm trees on the sidewalls of the
portico. The side rooms of the temple also had
canopies.
But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you: for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed: therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye
can shew me the interpretation thereof.
If you do not tell me the dream, there is only one decree for you. You have
conspired to speak before me false and
fraudulent words, hoping the situation will change. Therefore tell me the dream, and I will know that you
can give me its interpretation.”
The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that
can shew the king’s matter: therefore there is no king, lord, nor ruler, that asked such things at any
magician, or
astrologer, or
Chaldean.
The astrologers answered the king, “No one on earth
can do what the king requests! No king, however great and powerful, has ever asked anything like this of any
magician,
enchanter, or
astrologer.
And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is none other that
can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh.
What the king requests is so difficult that no one can tell it to him except the gods, whose dwelling is not with mortals.”
Daniel answered in the presence of the king, and said, The secret which the king hath demanded
cannot the wise men, the astrologers, the magicians, the soothsayers,
shew unto the king;
Daniel answered the king, “No wise man,
enchanter, medium, or
magician can explain to the king the
mystery of which he inquires.
Therefore I make a decree, That every people, nation, and language, which speak any thing
amiss against the God of
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abed-nego, shall be cut in pieces, and their houses shall be made a
dunghill: because there is no other God that
can deliver after this sort.
Therefore I decree that the people of any nation or language who say anything offensive against the God of
Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abednego will be cut into pieces and their houses reduced to
rubble. For there is no other god who
can deliver in this way.”
This dream I king
Nebuchadnezzar have seen. Now thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation thereof,
forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation: but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.
This is the dream that I, King
Nebuchadnezzar, saw. Now, Belteshazzar, tell me the interpretation, because none of the wise men of my kingdom
can interpret it for me. But you are able, because the spirit of the holy gods is in you.”
And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?
All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing, and He does as He pleases with the army of heaven and the peoples of the earth. There is no one who can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’”
In the same hour came forth fingers of a man’s hand, and wrote over against the
candlestick upon the
plaister of the wall of the king’s palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote.
At that moment the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the
plaster of the wall, near the lampstand in the royal palace. As the king watched the hand that was writing,
And I have heard of thee, that thou
canst make interpretations, and
dissolve doubts: now if thou
canst read the writing, and make known to me the interpretation thereof, thou shalt be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about thy neck, and shalt be the third ruler in the kingdom.
But I have heard about you, that you are able to give interpretations and
solve difficult problems. Therefore, if you
can read this inscription and give me its interpretation, you will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around your neck, and you will be made the third highest ruler in the kingdom.”
But hast lifted up
thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou, and thy lords, thy wives, and thy concubines, have
drunk wine in them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not
glorified:
Instead, you have
exalted yourself against the Lord of heaven. The vessels from His house were brought to you, and as you
drank wine from them with your nobles, wives, and concubines, you praised your gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which
cannot see or hear or understand. But you have failed to
glorify the God who holds in His hand your very breath and all your ways.
Now, O king, establish the decree, and sign the writing, that it be not changed, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
Therefore, O king, establish the decree and sign the document so that it
cannot be changed—in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which
cannot be
repealed.”
Then they came near, and spake before the king concerning the king’s decree; Hast thou not signed a decree, that every man that shall ask a petition of any God or man within thirty days, save of thee, O king, shall be cast into the den of lions? The king answered and said, The thing is true, according to the law of the Medes and Persians, which altereth not.
So they approached the king and asked about his royal decree: “Did you not sign a decree that for thirty days any man who petitions any god or man except you, O king, will be thrown into the den of lions?” The king replied, “According to the law of the Medes and Persians the order stands, and it
cannot be
repealed.”
Then these men assembled unto the king, and said unto the king, Know, O king, that the law of the Medes and Persians is, That no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed.
Then the men approached the king together and said to him, “Remember, O king, that by the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or
ordinance established by the king
can be changed.”
And I saw in a vision; and it came to pass, when I saw, that I was at
Shushan in the palace, which is in the province of
Elam; and I saw in a vision, and I was by the river of Ulai.
And in the vision I saw myself in the citadel of
Susa, in the province of
Elam. I saw in the vision that I was beside the Ulai
Canal.
Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last.
Then I lifted up my eyes and saw a ram with two horns standing beside the canal. The horns were long, but one was longer than the other, and the longer one grew up later.
And he came to the ram that had two horns, which I had seen standing before the river, and ran unto him in the
fury of his power.
He came toward the two-horned ram I had seen standing beside the
canal and
rushed at him with
furious power.
For how
can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me,
straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me.
How can I, your servant, speak with you, my lord? Now I have no strength, nor is any breath left in me.”
Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.
Yet the number of the Israelites will be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or counted. And it will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, ‘You are not My people,’ they will be called ‘sons of the living God.’
Therefore, behold, I will
hedge up thy way with thorns, and make a wall, that she shall not find her paths.
Therefore, behold, I will
hedge up her path with thorns; I will
enclose her with a wall, so she
cannot find her way.
For Israel slideth back as a
backsliding heifer: now the LORD will feed them as a lamb in a large place.
When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not
heal you, nor cure you of your wound.
When Ephraim saw his sickness and Judah his wound, then Ephraim turned to Assyria and sent to the great king. But he
cannot cure you or
heal your wound.
For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will
tear and go away; I will take away, and none shall
rescue him.
For I am like a lion to Ephraim and like a young lion to the house of Judah. I, even I, will
tear them to pieces and then go away. I will carry them off where no one
can rescue them.
Ephraim is
smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit:
yea, though they bring forth, yet will I
slay even the beloved fruit of their
womb.
Ephraim is struck down; their root is
withered; they
cannot bear fruit. Even if they bear children, I will
slay the darlings of their wombs.
For now they shall say, We have no king, because we feared not the LORD; what then should a king do to us?
Surely now they will say, “We have no king, for we do not
revere the LORD. What
can a king do for us?”
And Ephraim said, Yet I am become rich, I have found me out substance: in all my labours they shall find none iniquity in me that were sin.
And Ephraim boasts: “How rich I have become! I have found wealth for myself. In all my labors, they can find in me no iniquity that is sinful.”
And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who
can abide it?
The LORD raises His voice in the presence of His army. Indeed, His camp is very large, for mighty are those who obey His command. For the Day of the LORD is great and very
dreadful. Who
can endure it?
And I will restore to you the years that the
locust hath eaten, the
cankerworm, and the caterpiller, and the
palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you.
Can two walk together, except they be agreed?
Can two walk together without agreeing where to go?
Can a bird fall in a
snare upon the earth, where no
gin is for him? shall one take up a
snare from the earth, and have taken nothing at all?
Does a bird land in a
snare where no
bait has been set? Does a
trap spring from the ground when it has nothing to catch?
The lion hath
roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who
can but
prophesy?
The lion has
roared— who will not fear? The Lord GOD has spoken— who will not
prophesy?
Then
Amaziah the priest of
Bethel sent to
Jeroboam king of Israel, saying,
Amos hath
conspired against thee in the midst of the house of Israel: the land is not able to bear all his words.
Then
Amaziah the priest of
Bethel sent word to
Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, “
Amos has
conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land
cannot bear all his words,
The pride of thine heart hath
deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose
habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?
The pride of your heart has
deceived you, O dwellers in the clefts of the rocks whose
habitation is the heights, who say in your heart, ‘Who
can bring me down to the ground?’
And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the
Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.
And the exiles of this host of the Israelites will possess the land of the
Canaanites as far as Zarephath; and the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the cities of the Negev.
So the
shipmaster came to him, and said unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? arise, call upon thy God, if so be that God will think upon us, that we perish not.
The captain approached him and said, “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God. Perhaps this God will consider us, so that we may not perish.”
Who
can tell if God will turn and
repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
Who knows? God may turn and relent; He may turn from His fierce anger, so that we will not perish.”
And should not I
spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than
sixscore thousand persons that
cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?
So should I not care about the great city of
Nineveh, which has more than 120,000 people who
cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well?”
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I
devise an evil, from which ye shall not remove your necks; neither shall ye go
haughtily: for this time is evil.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “I am
planning against this nation a
disaster from which you
cannot free your necks. Then you will not walk so proudly, for it will be a time of
calamity.
The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for
hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they
lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil
can come upon us.
Her leaders judge for a
bribe, her priests teach for a price, and her prophets practice
divination for money. Yet they
lean upon the LORD, saying, “Is not the LORD among us? No
disaster can come upon us.”
And the
remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep: who, if he go through, both treadeth down, and teareth in pieces, and none
can deliver.
Then the
remnant of Jacob will be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among the beasts of the forest, like a young lion among flocks of sheep, which tramples and tears as it passes through, with no one to
rescue them.
Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the
scant measure that is
abominable?
Can I
forget any longer, O house of the wicked, the treasures of wickedness and the short
ephah, which is
accursed?
Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the
bag of
deceitful weights?
Who
can stand before his
indignation? and who
can abide in the fierceness of his anger? his
fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by him.
And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall
flee from thee, and say,
Nineveh is laid waste: who will
bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?
Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the
cankerworm spoileth, and fleeth away.
You have multiplied your merchants more than the stars of the sky. The young
locust strips the land and
flies away.
Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and
canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal
treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he?
Your eyes are too pure to look upon evil, and You
cannot tolerate wrongdoing. So why do You
tolerate the faithless? Why are You silent while the wicked
swallow up those more righteous than themselves?
Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, he is a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as
hell, and is as death, and
cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:
and wealth indeed betrays him. He is an
arrogant man never at rest. He enlarges his
appetite like
Sheol, and like Death, he is never satisfied. He gathers all the nations to himself and collects all the peoples as his own.
What profiteth the
graven image that the maker thereof hath
graven it; the
molten image, and a teacher of lies, that the maker of his work trusteth therein, to make
dumb idols?
What use is an
idol, that a
craftsman should
carve it— or an image, a teacher of lies? For its maker trusts in his own creation; he makes idols that
cannot speak.
Woe unto him that saith to the wood,
Awake; to the
dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
Woe to him who says to wood, ‘
Awake!’ or to silent stone, ‘Arise!’
Can it give guidance? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, yet there is no breath in it at all.”
And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with
candles, and
punish the men that are settled on their
lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.
And at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and
punish the men settled in
complacency, who say to themselves, ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’
Woe unto the inhabitants of the sea coast, the nation of the Cherethites! the word of the LORD is against you; O
Canaan, the land of the Philistines, I will even destroy thee, that there shall be no inhabitant.
Woe to the dwellers of the
seacoast, O nation of the Cherethites! The word of the LORD is against you, O
Canaan, land of the Philistines: “I will destroy you, and no one will be left.”
And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a
candlestick all of gold, with a
bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps
thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:
“What do you see?” he asked. “I see a solid gold lampstand,” I replied, “with a
bowl at the top and seven lamps on it, with seven spouts to the lamps.
Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the
candlestick and upon the left side thereof?
Then I asked the angel, “What are the two olive trees on the right and left of the lampstand?”
Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be
holiness unto the LORD of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and
seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the
Canaanite in the house of the LORD of hosts.
Indeed, every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the LORD of Hosts, and all who sacrifice will come and take some pots and
cook in them. And on that day there will no longer be a
Canaanite in the house of the LORD of Hosts.
But who may
abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fullers’
sope:
But who
can endure the day of His coming? And who
can stand when He appears? For He will be like a refiner’s fire, like a
launderer’s soap.
Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?
Yet from the days of your fathers, you have turned away from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Hosts. “But you ask, ‘How can we return?’
And think not to say within
yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
And do not
presume to say to
yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God
can raise up children for Abraham.
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour,
wherewith shall it be salted? it is
thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be
trodden under foot of men.
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its
savor, how
can it be made
salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and
trampled by men.
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill
cannot be
hid.
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
Neither do men light a
candle, and put it under a
bushel, but on a
candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a
basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to
everyone in the house.
