And
Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare
Enoch: and he builded a
city, and called the name of the
city, after the name of his son,
Enoch.
And
Cain had relations with his wife, and she conceived and gave birth to
Enoch. Then
Cain built a
city and named it after his son
Enoch.
Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded
Nineveh, and the
city Rehoboth, and
Calah,
From that land he went forth into Assyria, where he built
Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir,
Calah,
And Resen between
Nineveh and
Calah: the same is a great
city.
and Resen, which is between
Nineveh and the great
city of
Calah.
And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
“Come,” they said, “let us build for ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens, that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of all the earth.”
And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
Then the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the sons of men were building.
So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
So the LORD scattered them from there over the face of all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
Abram dwelled in the land of
Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the
cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward
Sodom.
Abram lived in the land of
Canaan, but Lot settled in the
cities of the plain and pitched his tent toward
Sodom.
Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the
city:
wilt thou also destroy and not
spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?
What if there are fifty righteous ones in the
city? Will You really
sweep it away and not
spare the place for the sake of the fifty righteous ones who are there?
And the LORD said, If I find in
Sodom fifty righteous within the
city, then I will
spare all the place for their sakes.
So the LORD replied, “If I find fifty righteous ones within the
city of
Sodom, on their account I will
spare the whole place.”
Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous:
wilt thou destroy all the
city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.
suppose the fifty righteous ones lack five. Will You destroy the whole city for the lack of five?” He replied, “If I find forty-five there, I will not destroy it.”
And there came two angels to
Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of
Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
Now the two angels arrived at
Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the
gateway of the
city. When Lot saw them, he got up to meet them, bowed facedown,
But before they lay down, the men of the
city, even the men of
Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
Before they had gone to bed, all the men of the
city of
Sodom, both young and old, surrounded the house.
And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and
whatsoever thou hast in the
city, bring them out of this place:
Then the two men said to Lot, “Do you have
anyone else here—a son-in-law, your sons or daughters, or
anyone else in the
city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,
And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this
city. But he seemed as one that
mocked unto his sons in law.
So Lot went out and spoke to the sons-in-law who were
pledged in marriage to his daughters. “Get up,” he said. “Get out of this place, for the LORD is about to destroy the
city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was
joking.
And when the morning arose, then the angels
hastened Lot, saying, Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters, which are here; lest thou be consumed in the iniquity of the
city.
At
daybreak the angels
hurried Lot along, saying, “Get up! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away in the punishment of the
city.”
And while he
lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being
merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the
city.
But when Lot
hesitated, the men
grabbed his hand and the hands of his wife and his two daughters. And they led them safely out of the
city, because of the LORD’s
compassion for them.
Behold now, this
city is near to
flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh, let me escape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my soul shall live.
Look, there is a town nearby where I can
flee, and it is a small place. Please let me
flee there—is it not a small place? Then my life will be saved.”
And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.
“Very well,” he answered, “I will grant this request as well, and will not
demolish the town you indicate.
Haste thee, escape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. Therefore the name of the
city was called Zoar.
Hurry! Run there quickly, for I cannot do anything until you reach it.” That is why the town was called Zoar.
And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
Thus He destroyed these cities and the entire plain, including all the inhabitants of the cities and everything that grew on the ground.
And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.
So when God destroyed the
cities of the plain, He remembered Abraham, and He brought Lot out of the
catastrophe that destroyed the
cities where he had lived.
And Ephron dwelt among the children of
Heth: and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the
audience of the children of
Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his
city, saying,
Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of
Heth. So in the presence of all the
Hittites who had come to the gate of his
city, Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham,
Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of
Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his
city.
to Abraham’s possession in the presence of all the
Hittites who had come to the gate of his
city.
And the servant took ten camels of the camels of his master, and departed; for all the goods of his master were in his hand: and he arose, and went to
Mesopotamia, unto the
city of
Nahor.
Then the servant took ten of his master’s camels and departed with all manner of good things from his master in hand. And he set out for
Nahor’s hometown in
Aram-naharaim.
And he made his camels to
kneel down without the
city by a well of water at the time of the evening, even the time that women go out to draw water.
As evening approached, he made the camels
kneel down near the well outside the town at the time when the women went out to draw water.
Behold, I stand here by the well of water; and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water:
Here I am, standing beside the spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water.
And he called it Shebah: therefore the name of the
city is Beer-
sheba unto this day.
So he called it Shibah, and to this day the name of the
city is
Beersheba.
And he called the name of that place
Bethel: but the name of that
city was called
Luz at the first.
and he called that place
Bethel, though previously the
city had been named
Luz.
And Jacob came to Shalem, a
city of
Shechem, which is in the land of
Canaan, when he came from Padan-
aram; and pitched his tent before the
city.
After Jacob had come from Paddan-
aram, he arrived safely at the
city of
Shechem in the land of
Canaan, and he camped just outside the
city.
And Hamor and
Shechem his son came unto the gate of their
city, and communed with the men of their
city, saying,
So Hamor and his son
Shechem went to the gate of their
city and addressed the men of their
city:
And unto Hamor and unto
Shechem his son
hearkened all that went out of the gate of his
city; and every male was
circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his
city.
And it came to pass on the third day, when they were
sore, that two of the sons of Jacob,
Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the
city boldly, and
slew all the males.
Three days later, while they were still in pain, two of Jacob’s sons (Dinah’s brothers
Simeon and Levi) took their swords, went into the
unsuspecting city, and slaughtered every male.
The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and
spoiled the
city, because they had
defiled their sister.
Jacob’s other sons came upon the slaughter and
looted the
city, because their sister had been
defiled.
They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their
asses, and that which was in the
city, and that which was in the field,
They took their flocks and herds and
donkeys, and everything else in the
city or in the field.
And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
As they set out, a terror from God fell over the surrounding cities, so that they did not pursue Jacob’s sons.
And Jacob came unto Isaac his father unto
Mamre, unto the
city of Arbah, which is
Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac
sojourned.
Jacob returned to his father Isaac at
Mamre, near Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had stayed.
And
Bela the son of Beor reigned in
Edom: and the name of his
city was Dinhabah.
Bela son of Beor reigned in
Edom; the name of his
city was Dinhabah.
And Husham died, and
Hadad the son of Bedad, who
smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his
stead: and the name of his
city was Avith.
When Husham died,
Hadad son of Bedad, who defeated
Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his place. And the name of his
city was Avith.
And
Baal-hanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his
stead: and the name of his
city was
Pau; and his wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.
When
Baal-hanan son of Achbor died,
Hadad reigned in his place. His
city was named
Pau, and his wife’s name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-zahab.
And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep food in the cities.
Under the authority of Pharaoh, let them collect all the excess food from these good years, that they may come and lay up the grain to be preserved as food in the cities.
And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same.
During those seven years, Joseph collected all the excess food in the land of Egypt and stored it in the cities. In every city he laid up the food from the fields around it.
And when they were gone out of the
city, and not yet far off, Joseph said unto his
steward, Up, follow after the men; and when thou
dost overtake them, say unto them, Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?
They had not gone far from the
city when Joseph told his
steward, “Pursue the men at once, and when you overtake them, ask, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?
Then they rent their clothes, and
laded every man his
ass, and returned to the
city.
Then they all
tore their clothes, loaded their
donkeys, and returned to the
city.
And as for the people, he removed them to cities from one end of the borders of Egypt even to the other end thereof.
and Joseph reduced the people to
servitude from one end of Egypt to the other.
Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to
afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh
treasure cities,
Pithom and Raamses.
So the Egyptians appointed taskmasters over the Israelites to
oppress them with forced labor. As a result, they built
Pithom and
Rameses as store
cities for Pharaoh.
And Moses said unto him, As soon as I am gone out of the
city, I will spread abroad my hands unto the LORD; and the
thunder shall cease, neither shall there be any more
hail; that thou mayest know how that the earth is the LORD’S.
Moses said to him, “When I have left the
city, I will spread out my hands to the LORD. The
thunder will cease, and there will be no more
hail, so that you may know that the earth is the LORD’s.
And Moses went out of the
city from Pharaoh, and spread abroad his hands unto the LORD: and the thunders and
hail ceased, and the rain was not poured upon the earth.
Then Moses departed from Pharaoh, went out of the
city, and spread out his hands to the LORD. The
thunder and
hail ceased, and the rain no longer poured down on the land.
Then the priest shall command that they take away the stones in which the plague is, and they shall cast them into an unclean place without the city:
he must order that the
contaminated stones be pulled out and thrown into an unclean place outside the
city.
And he shall cause the house to be
scraped within round about, and they shall pour out the dust that they
scrape off without the
city into an unclean place:
And he shall have the inside of the house
scraped completely and the
plaster that is
scraped off
dumped into an unclean place outside the
city.
And he shall break down the house, the stones of it, and the timber thereof, and all the
morter of the house; and he shall carry them forth out of the
city into an unclean place.
It must be
torn down with its stones, its timbers, and all its
plaster, and taken outside the
city to an unclean place.
But he shall let go the living bird out of the
city into the open fields, and make an
atonement for the house: and it shall be clean.
Finally, he is to release the live bird into the open fields outside the
city. In this way he will make
atonement for the house, and it will be clean.
And if a man sell a dwelling house in a walled
city, then he may
redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; within a full year may he
redeem it.
If a man sells a house in a walled
city, he retains his right of
redemption until a full year after its sale; during that year it may be redeemed.
And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubile.
If it is not redeemed by the end of a full year, then the house in the walled
city is permanently transferred to its
buyer and his descendants. It is not to be released in the
Jubilee.
Notwithstanding the
cities of the Levites, and the houses of the
cities of their possession, may the Levites
redeem at any time.
As for the
cities of the Levites, the Levites always have the right to
redeem their houses in the
cities they possess.
And if a man purchase of the Levites, then the house that was sold, and the city of his possession, shall go out in the year of jubile: for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel.
So whatever belongs to the Levites may be redeemed—a house sold in a
city they possess—and must be released in the
Jubilee, because the houses in the
cities of the Levites are their possession among the Israelites.
But the field of the suburbs of their cities may not be sold; for it is their perpetual possession.
But the open pastureland around their cities may not be sold, for this is their permanent possession.
And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall
avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when ye are gathered together within your
cities, I will send the
pestilence among you; and ye shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
And I will bring a sword against you to
execute the
vengeance of the covenant. Though you withdraw into your
cities, I will send a plague among you, and you will be delivered into the hand of the enemy.
And I will make your
cities waste, and bring your
sanctuaries unto
desolation, and I will not smell the savour of your sweet odours.
I will reduce your
cities to
rubble and lay waste your
sanctuaries, and I will refuse to smell the pleasing
aroma of your sacrifices.
And I will
scatter you among the heathen, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be
desolate, and your
cities waste.
But I will
scatter you among the nations and will draw out a sword after you as your land becomes
desolate and your
cities are laid waste.
And what the land is that they dwell in, whether it be good or bad; and what cities they be that they dwell in, whether in tents, or in strong holds;
Is the land where they live good or bad? Are the cities where they dwell open camps or fortifications?
Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the
cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of
Anak there.
Nevertheless, the people living in the land are strong, and the
cities are large and fortified. We even saw the descendants of
Anak there.
And when we
cried unto the LORD, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and hath brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a
city in the
uttermost of thy border:
and when we
cried out to the LORD, He heard our voice, sent an angel, and brought us out of Egypt. Now look, we are in Kadesh, a
city on the edge of your territory.
And Israel
vowed a
vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou
wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their
cities.
So Israel made a
vow to the LORD: “If You will deliver this people into our hands, we will
devote their
cities to destruction.”
And the LORD
hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the
Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their
cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.
And the LORD heard Israel’s
plea and delivered up the
Canaanites. Israel devoted them and their
cities to destruction; so they named the place Hormah.
And Israel took all these
cities: and Israel dwelt in all the
cities of the
Amorites, in
Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.
Israel captured all the
cities of the
Amorites and occupied them, including
Heshbon and all its villages.
For
Heshbon was the
city of Sihon the king of the
Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto
Arnon.
Heshbon was the
city of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land as far as the
Arnon.
Wherefore they that speak in
proverbs say, Come into
Heshbon, let the
city of Sihon be built and prepared:
That is why the poets say: “Come to
Heshbon, let it be rebuilt; let the
city of Sihon be restored.
For there is a fire gone out of
Heshbon, a flame from the
city of Sihon: it hath consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of
Arnon.
For a fire went out from
Heshbon, a
blaze from the
city of Sihon. It consumed Ar of Moab, the rulers of
Arnon’s heights.
And when Balak heard that
Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a
city of Moab, which is in the border of
Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.
When Balak heard that
Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the
Moabite city on the
Arnon border, at the edge of his territory.
Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city.
A ruler will come from Jacob and destroy the survivors of the city.”
And they burnt all their cities wherein they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire.
Then they burned all the cities where the Midianites had lived, as well as all their encampments,
And they came near unto him, and said, We will build sheepfolds here for our cattle, and cities for our little ones:
Then the Gadites and Reubenites approached Moses and said, “We want to build sheepfolds here for our
livestock and
cities for our little ones.
But we ourselves will go ready armed before the children of Israel, until we have brought them unto their place: and our little ones shall dwell in the
fenced cities because of the inhabitants of the land.
But we will arm ourselves and be ready to go
ahead of the Israelites until we have brought them into their place. Meanwhile, our little ones will remain in the fortified
cities for protection from the inhabitants of the land.
Build you cities for your little ones, and folds for your sheep; and do that which hath proceeded out of your mouth.
Build cities for your little ones and folds for your flocks, but do what you have promised.”
Our little ones, our wives, our flocks, and all our cattle, shall be there in the
cities of
Gilead:
Our children, our wives, our
livestock, and all our animals will remain here in the
cities of
Gilead.
And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of
Gad, and to the children of
Reuben, and unto half the tribe of
Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, and the kingdom of
Og king of
Bashan, the land, with the
cities thereof in the coasts, even the
cities of the country round about.
So Moses gave to the Gadites, to the Reubenites, and to the half-tribe of
Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites and the kingdom of
Og king of
Bashan—the land including its
cities and the territory surrounding them.
And Beth-nimrah, and Beth-
haran,
fenced cities: and folds for sheep.
Beth-nimrah, and Beth-
haran as fortified
cities, and they built folds for their flocks.
And
Nebo, and
Baal-meon, (their names being changed,) and Shibmah: and gave other names unto the
cities which they builded.
as well as
Nebo and
Baal-meon (whose names were changed), and Sibmah. And they renamed the
cities they rebuilt.
Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and ye shall give also unto the Levites suburbs for the cities round about them.
“Command the Israelites to give, from the inheritance they will possess, cities for the Levites to live in and pasturelands around the cities.
And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattle, and for their goods, and for all their beasts.
The
cities will be for them to live in, and the pasturelands will be for their herds, their flocks, and all their other
livestock.
And the suburbs of the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about.
The pasturelands around the cities you are to give the Levites will extend a thousand cubits from the wall on every side.
And ye shall measure from without the city on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits and the city shall be in the midst: this shall be to them the suburbs of the cities.
You are also to measure two thousand cubits outside the city on the east, two thousand on the south, two thousand on the west, and two thousand on the north, with the city in the center. These areas will serve as larger pasturelands for the cities.
And among the
cities which ye shall give unto the Levites there shall be six
cities for refuge, which ye shall
appoint for the
manslayer, that he may
flee thither: and to them ye shall add forty and two
cities.
Six of the
cities you give the Levites are to be appointed as
cities of refuge, to which a
manslayer may
flee. In addition to these, give the Levites forty-two other
cities.
So all the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: them shall ye give with their suburbs.
The total number of cities you give the Levites will be forty-eight, with their corresponding pasturelands.
And the cities which ye shall give shall be of the possession of the children of Israel: from them that have many ye shall give many; but from them that have few ye shall give few: every one shall give of his cities unto the Levites according to his inheritance which he inheriteth.
The
cities that you
apportion from the territory of the Israelites should be given to the Levites in proportion to the inheritance of each tribe: more from a larger tribe and less from a smaller one.”
Then ye shall
appoint you
cities to be
cities of refuge for you; that the
slayer may
flee thither, which killeth any person at unawares.
And they shall be unto you
cities for refuge from the
avenger; that the
manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation in judgment.
You are to have these
cities as a refuge from the
avenger, so that the
manslayer will not die until he stands trial before the assembly.
And of these cities which ye shall give six cities shall ye have for refuge.
The cities you select will be your six cities of refuge.
Ye shall give three
cities on this side Jordan, and three
cities shall ye give in the land of
Canaan, which shall be
cities of refuge.
Select three
cities across the Jordan and three in the land of
Canaan as
cities of refuge.
These six
cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the
sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may
flee thither.
These six
cities will serve as a refuge for the Israelites and for the foreigner or stranger among them, so that
anyone who kills a person
unintentionally may
flee there.
And the congregation shall deliver the
slayer out of the hand of the
revenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to the
city of his refuge,
whither he was fled: and he shall
abide in it unto the death of the high priest, which was
anointed with the holy oil.
The assembly is to protect the
manslayer from the hand of the
avenger of blood. Then the assembly will return him to the
city of refuge to which he fled, and he must live there until the death of the high priest, who was
anointed with the holy oil.
But if the
slayer shall at any time come without the border of the
city of his refuge,
whither he was fled;
But if the
manslayer ever goes outside the limits of the
city of refuge to which he fled
And the
revenger of blood find him without the borders of the
city of his refuge, and the
revenger of blood kill the
slayer; he shall not be guilty of blood:
and the
avenger of blood finds him outside of his
city of refuge and kills him, then the
avenger will not be guilty of
bloodshed Because he should have remained in the
city of his refuge until the death of the high priest: but after the death of the high priest the
slayer shall return into the land of his possession.
because the
manslayer must remain in his
city of refuge until the death of the high priest. Only after the death of the high priest may he return to the land he owns.
And ye shall take no satisfaction for him that is fled to the city of his refuge, that he should come again to dwell in the land, until the death of the priest.
Nor should you accept a
ransom for the person who flees to a
city of refuge and allow him to return and live on his own land before the death of the high priest.
And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.
Then all of you approached me and said, “Let us send men
ahead of us to search out the land and bring us word of what route to follow and which
cities to enter.”
Whither shall we go up? our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying, The people is greater and taller than we; the
cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakims there.
Where can we go? Our brothers have made our hearts
melt, saying: ‘The people are larger and taller than we are; the
cities are large, with walls up to the heavens. We even saw the descendants of the
Anakim there.’”
And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:
At that time we captured all his cities and devoted to destruction the people of every city, including women and children. We left no survivors.
Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the
spoil of the
cities which we took.
We carried off for ourselves only the
livestock and the
plunder from the
cities we captured.
From Aroer, which is by the
brink of the river of
Arnon, and from the
city that is by the river, even unto
Gilead, there was not one
city too strong for us: the LORD our God delivered all unto us:
From Aroer on the
rim of the
Arnon Valley, along with the
city in the valley, even as far as
Gilead, not one
city had walls too high for us. The LORD our God gave us all of them.
