And the
vale of Siddim was full of slimepits; and the kings of

Gomorrah fled, some men fell into the pits, but the survivors fled to the hill
country.
And he looked toward
Sodom and
Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and

And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the south
country, and dwelled between Kadesh and Shur, and

Gerar,
Now therefore
swear unto me here by God that thou
wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast
sojourned.
Now, therefore,
swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. Show to me and to the
country in which you reside the same kindness that I have shown to you.”

Laban and his relatives camped there as well.

Canaan, and he moved to a land far away from his brother Jacob.
And Husham died, and
Hadad the son of Bedad, who
smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his

Midian in the

And that food shall be for store to the land against the seven years of famine, which shall be in the land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine.
This food will be a reserve for the land during the seven years of famine to come upon the land of Egypt. Then the country will not perish in the famine.”
And the seven years of
dearth began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the
dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

The man, who is the lord of the land, spake roughly to us, and took us for
spies of the
country.
“The man who is lord of the land spoke harshly to us and accused us of
spying on the
country.
And the man, the lord of the
country, said unto us,
Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone:
Then the man who is lord of the land said to us, ‘This is how I will know whether you are
honest: Leave one brother with me, take food to
relieve the hunger of your households, and go.
And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the
country of
Goshen; and they had possessions therein, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly.
Now the Israelites settled in the land of Egypt, in the region of
Goshen. They acquired property there and became fruitful and increased greatly in number.
Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.
Come, let us deal
shrewdly with them, or they will increase even more; and if a war breaks out, they may join our enemies, fight against us, and leave the
country.”
And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will
smite all thy borders with frogs:
But if you refuse to let them go, I will plague your whole country with frogs.
And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall
afflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own
country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:
This is to be a permanent statute for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month, you shall humble
yourselves and not do any work—whether the native or the foreigner who resides among you—
And every soul that eateth that which died of itself, or that which was
torn with beasts, whether it be one of your own
country, or a stranger, he shall both wash his clothes, and
bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even: then shall he be clean.
And any person, whether native or foreigner, who eats anything found dead or
mauled by wild beasts must wash his clothes and
bathe with water, and he will be unclean until evening; then he will be clean.
Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the stranger, as for one of your own country: for I am the LORD your God.
You are to have the same standard of law for the foreign resident and the native; for I am the LORD your God.’”
But the houses of the villages which have no wall round about them shall be counted as the fields of the country: they may be redeemed, and they shall go out in the jubile.
But houses in villages with no walls around them are to be considered as open fields. They may be redeemed, and they shall be released in the
Jubilee.
And if thy brother be
waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt
relieve him:
yea, though he be a stranger, or a
sojourner; that he may live with thee.
Now if your
countryman becomes destitute and cannot support himself among you, then you are to help him as you would a foreigner or stranger, so that he can continue to live among you.
Take thou no
usury of him, or increase: but fear thy God; that thy brother may live with thee.
Do not take any interest or profit from him, but fear your God, that your
countryman may live among you.
And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be
waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not
compel him to serve as a
bondservant:
If a
countryman among you becomes destitute and sells himself to you, then you must not force him into slave labor.
And if a
sojourner or stranger wax rich by thee, and thy brother that dwelleth by him wax poor, and sell himself unto the stranger or
sojourner by thee, or to the stock of the stranger’s family:
If a foreigner residing among you prospers, but your
countryman dwelling near him becomes destitute and sells himself to the foreigner or to a member of his clan,
And Moses sent them to
spy out the land of
Canaan, and said unto them, Get you up this way southward, and go up into the mountain:
When Moses sent them to
spy out the land of
Canaan, he told them, “Go up through the Negev and into the hill
country.
The
Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the
Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the
Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the
Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.
And they rose up early in the morning, and
gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have
sinned.
Early the next morning they got up and went up toward the ridge of the hill
country. “We have indeed
sinned,” they said, “but we will go to the place the LORD has promised.”
But they presumed to go up unto the hill top: nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses, departed not out of the camp.
But they
dared to go up to the ridge of the hill
country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the covenant of the LORD moved from the camp.
Then the
Amalekites and
Canaanites who lived in that part of the hill
country came down, attacked them, and routed them all the way to Hormah.
All that are born of the country shall do these things after this manner, in offering an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the LORD.
Everyone who is native-born shall prepare these things in this way when he presents an offering made by fire as a pleasing
aroma to the LORD.
Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king’s high way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders.
Please let us pass through your land. We will not cut through any field or
vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will stay on the King’s
Highway; we will not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.”
And from Bamoth in the valley, that is in the
country of Moab, to the top of
Pisgah, which looketh toward Jeshimon.
and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where the top of
Pisgah overlooks the wasteland.
Even the
country which the LORD
smote before the congregation of Israel, is a land for cattle, and thy servants have cattle:
which the LORD conquered before the congregation of Israel, are suitable for
livestock—and your servants have
livestock.”
And Moses gave unto them, even to the children of
Gad, and to the children of
Reuben, and unto half the tribe of
Manasseh the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, and the kingdom of
Og king of
Bashan, the land, with the cities thereof in the coasts, even the cities of the
country round about.
So Moses gave to the Gadites, to the Reubenites, and to the half-tribe of
Manasseh son of Joseph the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites and the kingdom of
Og king of
Bashan—the land including its cities and the territory surrounding them.
Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the mount of the
Amorites, and unto all the places
nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the
vale, and in the south, and by the sea side, to the land of the
Canaanites, and unto
Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Euphrates.
Resume your journey and go to the hill
country of the
Amorites; go to all the
neighboring peoples in the Arabah, in the hill
country, in the foothills, in the Negev, and along the
seacoast to the land of the
Canaanites and to
Lebanon, as far as the great River Euphrates.
And when we departed from
Horeb, we went through all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the
Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh-barnea.
And just as the LORD our God had commanded us, we set out from
Horeb and went toward the hill
country of the
Amorites, through all the vast and
terrifying wilderness you have seen. When we reached Kadesh-barnea,
And I said unto you, Ye are come unto the mountain of the
Amorites, which the LORD our God
doth give unto us.
I said: “You have reached the hill
country of the
Amorites, which the LORD our God is giving us.
And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of
Eshcol, and searched it out.
They left and went up into the hill
country, and came to the Valley of
Eshcol and
spied out the land.
Then ye answered and said unto me, We have
sinned against the LORD, we will go up and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us. And when ye had
girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.
“We have
sinned against the LORD,” you replied. “We will go up and fight, as the LORD our God has commanded us.” Then each of you put on his weapons of war, thinking it easy to go up into the hill
country.
So I spake unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and went
presumptuously up into the hill.
So I spoke to you, but you would not
listen. You rebelled against the command of the LORD and
presumptuously went up into the hill
country.
Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.
“You have been wandering around this hill country long enough; turn to the north
Only unto the land of the children of
Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river
Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto
whatsoever the LORD our God
forbad us.
But you did not go near the land of the
Ammonites, or the land along the banks of the
Jabbok River, or the cities of the hill
country, or any place that the LORD our God had forbidden.
And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river
Arnon, and half mount
Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.
So at that time we took possession of this land. To the Reubenites and Gadites I gave the land beyond Aroer along the
Arnon Valley, and half the hill
country of
Gilead, along with its cities.
Jair the son of
Manasseh took all the
country of
Argob unto the coasts of Geshuri and Maachathi; and called them after his own name,
Bashan-havoth-
jair, unto this day.
Jair, a
descendant of
Manasseh, took the whole region of
Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites. He renamed
Bashan after himself, Havvoth-
jair, by which it is called to this day.
I pray thee, let me go over, and see the good land that is beyond Jordan, that goodly mountain, and
Lebanon.
Please let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan—that pleasant hill
country as well as
Lebanon!”
Namely,
Bezer in the wilderness, in the plain
country, of the Reubenites; and
Ramoth in
Gilead, of the Gadites; and Golan in
Bashan, of the Manassites.
Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau belonging to the Reubenites,
Ramoth in
Gilead belonging to the Gadites, or Golan in
Bashan belonging to the Manassites.
That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may
prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.
Then his heart will not be
exalted above his
countrymen, and he will not turn aside from the commandment, to the right or to the left, in order that he and his sons may reign many years over his kingdom in Israel.
But if a man find a
betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her, and lie with her: then the man only that lay with her shall die:
But if the man encounters a
betrothed woman in the open
country, and he overpowers her and lies with her, only the man who has done this must die.
And thou shalt go unto the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him, I
profess this day unto the LORD thy God, that I am come unto the
country which the LORD
sware unto our fathers for to give us.
to the priest who is serving at that time, and say to him, “I declare
today to the LORD your God that I have entered the land that the LORD
swore to our fathers to give us.”
Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field.
You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.
Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and
cursed shalt thou be in the field.
And it was told the king of
Jericho, saying, Behold, there came men in
hither to night of the children of Israel to search out the
country.
And it was reported to the king of
Jericho: “Behold, some men of Israel have come here
tonight to
spy out the land.”
And the king of
Jericho sent unto
Rahab, saying, Bring forth the men that are come to thee, which are entered into thine house: for they be come to search out all the
country.
So the king of
Jericho sent to
Rahab and said, “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, for they have come to
spy out the whole land.”
And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide
yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.
“Go to the hill
country,” she said, “so that your pursuers will not find you. Hide
yourselves there for three days until they have returned; then go on your way.”
And they went, and came unto the mountain, and abode there three days, until the pursuers were returned: and the pursuers sought them throughout all the way, but found them not.
So the
spies went out into the hill
country and stayed there three days, until their pursuers had returned without finding them, having searched all along the road.
So the two men returned, and descended from the mountain, and passed over, and came to Joshua the son of
Nun, and told him all things that
befell them:
Then the two men started back, came down from the hill
country, and crossed the river. So they came to Joshua son of
Nun and reported all that had happened to them.
And they said unto Joshua, Truly the LORD hath delivered into our hands all the land; for even all the inhabitants of the
country do
faint because of us.
“The LORD has surely delivered the entire land into our hands,” they said to Joshua. “Indeed, all who dwell in the land are melting in fear of us.”
But Joshua had said unto the two men that had
spied out the
country, Go into the
harlot’s house, and bring out thence the woman, and all that she hath, as ye
sware unto her.
Meanwhile, Joshua told the two men who had
spied out the land, “Go into the house of the
prostitute and bring out the woman and all who are with her, just as you promised her.”
So the LORD was with Joshua; and his fame was noised throughout all the country.
So the LORD was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.
And Joshua sent men from
Jericho to
Ai, which is beside Beth-
aven, on the east side of
Bethel, and spake unto them, saying, Go up and view the
country. And the men went up and viewed
Ai.
Meanwhile, Joshua sent men from
Jericho to
Ai, which is near Beth-
aven to the east of
Bethel, and told them, “Go up and
spy out the land.” So the men went up and
spied out
Ai.
And it came to pass, when all the kings which were on this side Jordan, in the hills, and in the valleys, and in all the coasts of the great sea over against
Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the
Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, heard thereof;
And they went to Joshua unto the camp at
Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far
country: now therefore make ye a league with us.
They went to Joshua in the camp at
Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land; please make a treaty with us.”
And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,
“Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,
Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our
country spake to us, saying, Take
victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.
So the elders and inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go to meet them and say to them: We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.’
And the men of
Gibeon sent unto Joshua to the camp to
Gilgal, saying,
Slack not thy hand from thy servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us: for all the kings of the
Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us.
Then the men of
Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at
Gilgal: “Do not
abandon your servants. Come quickly and save us! Help us, because all the kings of the
Amorites from the hill
country have joined forces against us.”
So Joshua
smote all the
country of the hills, and of the south, and of the
vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.
So Joshua conquered the whole region—the hill country, the Negev, the foothills, and the slopes, together with all their kings—leaving no survivors. He devoted to destruction everything that breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.
And Joshua
smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto
Gaza, and all the
country of
Goshen, even unto
Gibeon.
Joshua conquered the area from Kadesh-barnea to
Gaza, and the whole region of
Goshen as far as
Gibeon.
And to the
Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under
Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.
So Joshua took all that land, the hills, and all the south
country, and all the land of
Goshen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Israel, and the valley of the same;
So Joshua took this entire region: the hill
country, all the Negev, all the land of
Goshen, the western foothills, the Arabah, and the mountains of Israel and their foothills,
And at that time came Joshua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains, from
Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Israel: Joshua destroyed them utterly with their cities.
At that time Joshua proceeded to
eliminate the
Anakim from the hill
country of
Hebron, Debir, and Anab, and from all the hill
country of Judah and of Israel. Joshua devoted them to destruction, along with their cities.
And these are the kings of the
country which Joshua and the children of Israel
smote on this side Jordan on the west, from
Baal-
gad in the valley of
Lebanon even unto the mount Halak, that goeth up to
Seir; which Joshua gave unto the tribes of Israel for a possession according to their divisions;
And these are the kings of the land that Joshua and the Israelites conquered beyond the Jordan to the west, from
Baal-
gad in the Valley of
Lebanon to Mount Halak, which rises toward
Seir (according to the allotments to the tribes of Israel, Joshua gave them as an inheritance
In the mountains, and in the valleys, and in the plains, and in the springs, and in the wilderness, and in the south
country; the
Hittites, the
Amorites, and the
Canaanites, the
Perizzites, the
Hivites, and the Jebusites:
the hill
country, the foothills, the Arabah, the slopes, the wilderness, and the Negev—the lands of the
Hittites,
Amorites,
Canaanites,
Perizzites,
Hivites, and Jebusites):
All the inhabitants of the hill
country from
Lebanon unto Misrephoth-
maim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.
All the inhabitants of the hill
country from
Lebanon to Misrephoth-
maim—all the Sidonians—I Myself will drive out before the Israelites. Be sure to divide it by lot as an inheritance to Israel, as I have commanded you.
And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, which reigned in
Heshbon, whom Moses
smote with the princes of
Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the
country.
all the cities of the plateau and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the
Amorites, who reigned in
Heshbon until Moses killed him and the chiefs of
Midian (Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba), the princes of Sihon who lived in the land.
Now therefore give me this mountain,
whereof the LORD spake in that day; for thou heardest in that day how the Anakims were there, and that the cities were great and
fenced: if so be the LORD will be with me, then I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD said.
Now therefore give me this hill
country that the LORD promised me on that day, for you
yourself heard then that the
Anakim were there, with great and fortified cities. Perhaps with the LORD’s help I will drive them out, as the LORD has spoken.”
And in the mountains, Shamir, and Jattir, and Socoh,
These were in the hill country:
And the lot of the children of Joseph fell from Jordan by
Jericho, unto the water of
Jericho on the east, to the wilderness that goeth up from
Jericho throughout mount
Bethel,
The
allotment for the descendants of Joseph extended from the Jordan at
Jericho to the waters of
Jericho on the east, through the wilderness that goes up from
Jericho into the hill
country of
Bethel.
And Joshua answered them, If thou be a great people, then get thee up to the wood
country, and cut down for
thyself there in the land of the
Perizzites and of the giants, if mount Ephraim be too narrow for thee.
Joshua answered them, “If you have so many people that the hill
country of Ephraim is too small for you, go to the forest and clear for
yourself an area in the land of the
Perizzites and the
Rephaim.”
And the children of Joseph said, The hill is not enough for us: and all the
Canaanites that dwell in the land of the valley have
chariots of iron, both they who are of Beth-shean and her towns, and they who are of the valley of
Jezreel.
“The hill
country is not enough for us,” they replied, “and all the
Canaanites who live in the valley have iron
chariots, both in Beth-shean with its towns and in the Valley of
Jezreel.”
But the mountain shall be thine; for it is a wood, and thou shalt cut it down: and the outgoings of it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive out the
Canaanites, though they have iron
chariots, and though they be strong.
because the hill
country will be yours as well. It is a forest; clear it, and its
farthest limits will be yours. Although the
Canaanites have iron
chariots and although they are strong, you can drive them out.”
And their border on the north side was from Jordan; and the border went up to the side of
Jericho on the north side, and went up through the mountains westward; and the goings out thereof were at the wilderness of Beth-
aven.
On the north side their border began at the Jordan, went up past the northern slope of
Jericho, headed west through the hill
country, and came out at the wilderness of Beth-
aven.
According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnath-serah in mount Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt therein.
as the LORD had commanded. They gave him the city of Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, as he requested. He rebuilt the city and settled in it.
These are the inheritances which
Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of
Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in
Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the
country.
These are the inheritances that
Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of
Nun, and the heads of the families distributed by lot to the tribes of Israel at
Shiloh before the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. So they finished dividing up the land.
And they appointed Kedesh in
Galilee in mount
Naphtali, and
Shechem in mount Ephraim, and Kirjath-arba, which is
Hebron, in the mountain of Judah.
So they set apart Kedesh in
Galilee in the hill
country of
Naphtali,
Shechem in the hill
country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron) in the hill
country of Judah.
And they gave them the city of Arba the father of
Anak, which city is
Hebron, in the hill
country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it.
They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is,
Hebron), with its surrounding pasturelands, in the hill
country of Judah. (Arba was the father of
Anak.)
For they gave them
Shechem with her suburbs in mount Ephraim, to be a city of refuge for the
slayer; and
Gezer with her suburbs,
From the tribe of Ephraim they were given
Shechem in the hill
country of Ephraim (a city of refuge for the
manslayer),
Gezer,
And the children of
Reuben and the children of
Gad and the half tribe of
Manasseh returned, and departed from the children of Israel out of
Shiloh, which is in the land of
Canaan, to go unto the
country of
Gilead, to the land of their possession,
whereof they were possessed, according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
So the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of
Manasseh left the Israelites at
Shiloh in the land of
Canaan to return to their own land of
Gilead, which they had acquired according to the command of the LORD through Moses.
And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-serah, which is in mount Ephraim, on the north side of the hill of Gaash.
And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.
