Now when Solomon had made an end of praying, the fire came down from heaven, and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices; and the glory of the LORD filled the house.
When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt offering and the sacrifices, and the glory of the LORD filled the temple.
And when all the children of Israel saw how the fire came
down, and the glory of the LORD upon the house, they bowed themselves with their faces to the ground upon the
pavement, and worshipped, and praised the LORD, saying, For he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.
When all the Israelites saw the fire coming
down and the glory of the LORD above the temple, they bowed
down on the
pavement with their faces to the ground, and they worshiped and gave
thanks to the LORD: “For He is good; His loving devotion endures
forever.”

slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell

Jeroboam recover strength again in the days of
Abijah: and the LORD struck him, and he died.

Abijah, and the LORD struck him
down and he died.
For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and
brake down the images, and cut
down the groves:
He removed the foreign altars and high places,
shattered the sacred pillars, and
chopped down the Asherah poles.
So the LORD
smote the Ethiopians before
Asa and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.

Asa and Judah, and the Cushites fled.
And also concerning Maachah the mother of
Asa the king, he removed her from being queen, because she had made an

And after certain years he went
down to
Ahab to Samaria. And
Ahab killed sheep and oxen for him in abundance, and for the people that he had with him, and persuaded him to go up with him to
Ramoth-

And some years later he went
down to visit
Ahab in Samaria, where
Ahab sacrificed many sheep and cattle for him and the people with him, and urged him to march up to
Ramoth-
gilead.
And the battle increased that day:
howbeit the king of Israel stayed himself up in his
chariot against the Syrians until the even: and about the time of the sun going
down he died.

chariot facing the Arameans until evening. And at
sunset he died.
To
morrow go ye
down against them: behold, they come up by the
cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the
brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel.
Tomorrow you are to march
down against them. You will see them coming up the
Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the valley facing the Wilderness of Jeruel.

And he returned to be
healed in
Jezreel because of the wounds which were given him at
Ramah, when he fought with
Hazael king of Syria. And
Azariah the son of Jehoram king of Judah went
down to see Jehoram the son of
Ahab at
Jezreel, because he was sick.
so he returned to
Jezreel to recover from the wounds they had inflicted on him at
Ramah when he fought against
Hazael king of
Aram. Then
Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went
down to
Jezreel to visit
Joram son of
Ahab, because
Joram had been wounded.
And the destruction of
Ahaziah was of God by coming to
Joram: for when he was come, he went out with Jehoram against
Jehu the son of Nimshi, whom the LORD had
anointed to cut off the house of
Ahab.
Then all the people went to the house of
Baal, and
brake it
down, and
brake his altars and his images in pieces, and
slew Mattan the priest of
Baal before the altars.
So all the people went to the temple of
Baal and
tore it
down. They
smashed the altars and idols to pieces and killed Mattan the priest of
Baal in front of the altars.
And he took the captains of hundreds, and the nobles, and the governors of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought down the king from the house of the LORD: and they came through the high gate into the king’s house, and set the king upon the throne of the kingdom.
He also took with him the commanders of hundreds, the nobles, the rulers of the people, and all the people of the land, and they brought the king
down from the house of the LORD and entered the royal palace through the Upper Gate. They seated King
Joash on the royal throne,
But if thou
wilt go, do it, be strong for the battle: God shall make thee fall before the enemy: for God hath power to help, and to cast
down.
Even if you go and fight
bravely in battle, God will make you
stumble before the enemy, for God has power to help and power to overthrow.”
And
Amaziah strengthened himself, and led forth his people, and went to the valley of salt, and
smote of the children of
Seir ten thousand.
Amaziah, however, summoned his strength and led his troops to the Valley of Salt, where he struck
down 10,000 men of
Seir,
And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away
captive, and brought them unto the top of the rock, and cast them
down from the top of the rock, that they all were broken in pieces.
and the army of Judah also captured 10,000 men alive. They took them to the top of a
cliff and threw them
down so that all were
dashed to pieces.
But the soldiers of the army which
Amaziah sent back, that they should not go with him to battle, fell upon the cities of Judah, from Samaria even unto Beth-horon, and
smote three thousand of them, and took much
spoil.
Meanwhile the troops that
Amaziah had dismissed from battle
raided the cities of Judah, from Samaria to Beth-horon. They struck
down 3,000 people and carried off a great deal of
plunder.
Now it came to pass, after that
Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites, that he brought the gods of the children of
Seir, and set them up to be his gods, and bowed
down himself before them, and burned incense unto them.

Amaziah returned from the slaughter of the Edomites, he brought back the gods of the Seirites, set them up as his own gods, bowed before them, and burned sacrifices to them.
And it came to pass, as he talked with him, that the king said unto him, Art thou made of the king’s counsel?
forbear; why shouldest thou be
smitten? Then the prophet
forbare, and said, I know that God hath determined to destroy thee, because thou hast done this, and hast not
hearkened unto my counsel.
While he was still speaking, the king asked, “Have we made you the
counselor to the king? Stop! Why be struck
down?” So the prophet stopped, but he said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not
heeded my advice.”
And
Joash the king of Israel took
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem, and
brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to the corner gate, four hundred cubits.
There at Beth-shemesh, Jehoash king of Israel captured
Amaziah king of Judah, the son of
Joash, the son of
Jehoahaz. Then Jehoash brought him to Jerusalem and broke
down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate—a section of four hundred cubits.
And he went forth and
warred against the Philistines, and
brake down the wall of
Gath, and the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of
Ashdod, and built cities about
Ashdod, and among the Philistines.

wage war against the Philistines, and he
tore down the walls of
Gath, Jabneh, and
Ashdod. Then he built cities near
Ashdod and among the Philistines.
For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which
smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel.
Since Damascus had defeated him, he sacrificed to their gods and said, “Because the gods of the kings of
Aram have helped them, I will sacrifice to them that they may help me.” But these gods were the
downfall of
Ahaz and of all Israel.
And when they had made an end of offering, the king and all that were present with him bowed themselves, and worshipped.
When the offerings were completed, the king and all those present with him bowed down and worshiped.
Now when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and
brake the images in pieces, and cut
down the groves, and threw
down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and
Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.
When all this had ended, the Israelites in attendance went out to the cities of Judah and broke up the sacred pillars,
chopped down the Asherah poles, and
tore down the high places and altars throughout Judah and Benjamin, as well as in Ephraim and
Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the Israelites returned to their cities, each to his own property.
And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own
bowels slew him there with the sword.
and the LORD sent an angel who
annihilated every mighty man of
valor and every leader and commander in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he withdrew to his own land in disgrace. And when he entered the temple of his god, some of his own sons struck him
down with the sword.
This same
Hezekiah also stopped the upper watercourse of
Gihon, and brought it straight
down to the west side of the city of David. And
Hezekiah prospered in all his works.
It was
Hezekiah who blocked the upper outlet of the Spring of
Gihon and channeled it
down to the west side of the City of David. And
Hezekiah prospered in all that he did.
For he built again the high places which
Hezekiah his father had broken
down, and he reared up altars for
Baalim, and made groves, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.
For he rebuilt the high places that his father
Hezekiah had
torn down, and he raised up altars for the Baals and made Asherah poles. And he worshiped and served all the host of heaven.
And they
brake down the altars of
Baalim in his presence; and the images, that were on high above them, he cut
down; and the groves, and the carved images, and the
molten images, he
brake in pieces, and made dust of them, and
strowed it upon the graves of them that had sacrificed unto them.
Then in his presence the altars of the Baals were
torn down, and he cut to pieces the incense altars that were above them. He
shattered the Asherah poles, the carved idols, and the cast images,
crushed them to dust, and scattered them over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.
And when he had broken
down the altars and the groves, and had beaten the
graven images into powder, and cut
down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel, he returned to Jerusalem.
He
tore down the altars and Asherah poles,
crushed the idols to powder, and cut to pieces all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.

brake down the wall of Jerusalem, and burnt all the palaces thereof with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels thereof.

And
hired counsellors against them, to
frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
They
hired counselors against them to
frustrate their plans throughout the reign of Cyrus king of Persia and
down to the reign of
Darius king of Persia.
We asked their names also, to
certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them.
We also asked for their names, so that we could write down the names of their leaders for your information.
Also I have made a decree, that
whosoever shall alter this word, let timber be pulled
down from his house, and being set up, let him be
hanged thereon; and let his house be made a
dunghill for this.
I also decree that if any man interferes with this directive, a beam is to be
torn from his house and raised up, and he is to be impaled on it. And his own house shall be made a pile of
rubble for this
offense.
And when I heard this thing, I rent my garment and my
mantle, and
plucked off the hair of my head and of my
beard, and sat
down astonied.
Now when
Ezra had prayed, and when he had
confessed,
weeping and casting himself
down before the house of God, there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation of men and women and children: for the people
wept very
sore.
While
Ezra prayed and made this confession,
weeping and falling facedown before the house of God, a very large assembly of Israelites—men, women, and children—gathered around him, and the people
wept bitterly as well.
And the children of the captivity did so. And
Ezra the priest, with certain chief of the fathers, after the house of their fathers, and all of them by their names, were separated, and sat
down in the first day of the tenth month to examine the matter.
So the exiles did as proposed.
Ezra the priest selected men who were family heads, each of them identified by name, to represent their families. On the first day of the tenth month they
launched the investigation,
And they said unto me, The
remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great
affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken
down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.
And they told me, “The
remnant who survived the exile are there in the province, in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken
down, and its gates are burned with fire.”
And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat
down and
wept, and
mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,
When I heard these words, I sat
down and
wept. I
mourned for days, fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the
dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken
down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire.
So I went out at night through the Valley Gate toward the Well of the Serpent and the Dung Gate, and I
inspected the walls of Jerusalem that had been broken
down and the gates that had been destroyed by fire.
Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned down. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”
But the gate of the fountain repaired Shallun the son of
Col-hozeh, the ruler of part of
Mizpah; he built it, and covered it, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof, and the wall of the
pool of
Siloah by the king’s garden, and unto the stairs that go
down from the city of David.
The Fountain Gate was repaired by Shallun son of
Col-hozeh, ruler of the district of
Mizpah. He rebuilt it, roofed it, and
installed its doors, bolts, and bars. He also repaired the wall of the
Pool of Shelah near the king’s garden, as far as the stairs that descend from the City of David.
Now
Tobiah the
Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break
down their stone wall.
Then
Tobiah the
Ammonite, who was beside him, said, “If even a fox were to
climb up on what they are building, it would break
down their wall of stones!”
And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?
So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work and cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it to go down to you?”
And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God.
When all our enemies heard about this, all the surrounding nations were afraid and
disheartened, for they realized that this task had been accomplished by our God.
And
Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered,
Amen,
Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground.
Then
Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and with their hands
uplifted, all the people said, “
Amen,
Amen!” Then they bowed
down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground.
Thou camest
down also upon mount
Sinai, and spakest with them from heaven, and gavest them right judgments, and true laws, good statutes and commandments:
You came
down on Mount
Sinai and spoke with them from heaven. You gave them just ordinances, true laws, and good statutes and commandments.
Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but
hired Balaam against them, that he should
curse them:
howbeit our God turned the
curse into a blessing.
because they had not met the Israelites with food and water, but had
hired Balaam to call
down a
curse against them (although our God had turned the
curse into a blessing).
And I
contended with them, and
cursed them, and
smote certain of them, and
plucked off their hair, and made them
swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for
yourselves.
I
rebuked them and called
down curses on them. I beat some of these men and pulled out their hair. Then I made them take an oath before God and said, “You must not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters as wives for your sons or for
yourselves!
And all the king’s servants, that were in the king’s gate, bowed, and reverenced
Haman: for the king had so commanded concerning him. But
Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence.
All the royal servants at the king’s gate bowed
down and paid
homage to
Haman, because the king had commanded that this be done for him. But
Mordecai would not bow
down or pay
homage.
And when
Haman saw that
Mordecai bowed not, nor did him reverence, then was
Haman full of wrath.
The posts went out, being
hastened by the king’s commandment, and the decree was given in
Shushan the palace. And the king and
Haman sat
down to drink; but the city
Shushan was
perplexed.
The couriers left,
spurred on by the king’s command, and the edict was issued in the citadel of
Susa. Then the king and
Haman sat
down to drink, but the city of
Susa was in confusion.
And
Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends every thing that had
befallen him. Then said his wise men and Zeresh his wife unto him, If
Mordecai be of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not prevail against him, but shalt surely fall before him.
Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened. His advisers and his wife Zeresh said to him, “Since
Mordecai, before whom your
downfall has begun, is Jewish, you will not prevail against him—for surely you will fall before him.”
And
Esther spake yet again before the king, and fell
down at his feet, and
besought him with tears to put away the mischief of
Haman the Agagite, and his
device that he had devised against the Jews.
And once again,
Esther addressed the king. She fell at his feet
weeping and
begged him to
revoke the evil scheme of
Haman the Agagite, which he had devised against the Jews.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Whence comest thou? Then
Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and
fro in the earth, and from walking up and
down in it.
“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to
Satan. “From
roaming through the earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”
And the
Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away;
yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
the
Sabeans swooped down and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you!”
Then Job arose, and rent his
mantle, and
shaved his head, and fell
down upon the ground, and worshipped,
Then Job stood up,
tore his
robe, and
shaved his head. He fell to the ground and worshiped,
And the LORD said unto
Satan, From whence comest thou? And
Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and
fro in the earth, and from walking up and
down in it.
“Where have you come from?” said the LORD to
Satan. “From
roaming through the earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”
And Job took a piece of broken pottery to
scrape himself as he sat among the ashes.
So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, but no one spoke a word to him because they saw how intense his suffering was.
For now should I have
lain still and been quiet, I should have
slept: then had I been at rest,
For now I would be lying
down in peace; I would be
asleep and at rest
For now ye are no thing; ye see my casting down, and are afraid.
For now you are of no help; you see terror, and you are afraid.
When I lie
down, I say, When shall I arise, and the night be gone? and I am full of tossings to and
fro unto the
dawning of the day.
When I lie
down I think: ‘When will I get up?’ But the night drags on, and I
toss and turn until
dawn.
As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away: so he that goeth down to the grave shall come up no more.
As a cloud vanishes and is gone, so he who goes
down to
Sheol does not come back up.
Will You never look away from me, or leave me alone to
swallow my
spittle?
And why
dost thou not
pardon my
transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and thou shalt seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.
Why do You not
pardon my
transgression and take away my iniquity? For soon I will lie
down in the dust; You will seek me, but I will be no more.”
Whilst it is yet in his greenness, and not cut
down, it withereth before any other
herb.
While the shoots are still uncut, they dry up quicker than grass.
They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey.
And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope;
yea, thou shalt
dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.
You will be secure, because there is hope, and you will look around and lie down in safety.
Also thou shalt lie
down, and none shall make thee afraid;
yea, many shall make suit unto thee.
You will lie down without fear, and many will court your favor.
Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again: he shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.
What He tears down cannot be rebuilt; the man He imprisons cannot be released.
He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
Like a flower, he comes forth, then
withers away; like a fleeting shadow, he does not
endure.
For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut
down, that it will
sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
For there is hope for a tree: If it is cut
down, it will
sprout again, and its tender shoots will not fail.
So man lieth
down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not
awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
so a man lies
down and does not rise. Until the heavens are no more, he will not be
awakened or
roused from sleep.
Lay
down now, put me in a
surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands with me?
They shall go down to the bars of the pit, when our rest together is in the dust.
Will it go
down to the gates of
Sheol? Will we go
down together into the dust?”
The steps of his strength shall be
straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him
down.
It shall dwell in his tabernacle, because it is none of his:
brimstone shall be scattered upon his
habitation.
Fire resides in his tent; burning sulfur rains down on his dwelling.
He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and mine hope hath he removed like a tree.
He tears me down on every side until I am gone; He uproots my hope like a tree.
His bones are full of the sin of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust.
The youthful
vigor that fills his bones will lie
down with him in the dust.
He hath
swallowed down riches, and he shall
vomit them up again: God shall cast them out of his
belly.
He
swallows wealth but vomits it out; God will force it from his stomach.
That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not
swallow it
down: according to his substance shall the
restitution be, and he shall not
rejoice therein.
He must return the fruit of his labor without
consuming it; he cannot enjoy the profits of his trading.
When he is about to fill his
belly, God shall cast the
fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.
When he has filled his stomach, God will
vent His
fury upon him, raining it
down on him as he eats.
They
spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go
down to the grave.
They
spend their days in prosperity and go
down to
Sheol in peace.
They shall lie down alike in the dust, and the worms shall cover them.
But together they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.
Which were cut
down out of time, whose foundation was
overflown with a flood:
They were
snatched away before their time, and their foundations were swept away by a flood.
Whereas our substance is not cut
down, but the
remnant of them the fire consumeth.
‘Surely our foes are destroyed, and fire has consumed their excess.’
When men are cast down, then thou shalt say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person.
When men are brought low and you say, ‘Lift them up!’ then He will save the lowly.
The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he is not.
He lies down wealthy, but will do so no more; when he opens his eyes, all is gone.
If I
laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not
down.
If I
smiled at them, they did not believe it; the light of my countenance was precious.
They were driven forth from among men, (they
cried after them as after a
thief;)
For I know that thou
wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living.
Yes, I know that You will bring me
down to death, to the place appointed for all the living.
Then let my wife
grind unto another, and let others bow
down upon her.
then may my own wife
grind grain for another, and may other men sleep with her.
For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.
For it is a fire that burns
down to
Abaddon; it would root out my entire harvest.
Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom: God thrusteth him down, not man.
So do not claim, ‘We have found wisdom; let God, not man,
refute him.’
Then he is
gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going
down to the pit: I have found a
ransom.
to be
gracious to him and say, ‘
Spare him from going
down to the Pit; I have found his
ransom,’
He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.
He redeemed my soul from going down to the Pit, and I will live to see the light.’
