Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his
father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.
A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but a companion of prostitutes squanders his wealth.
There is a generation that curseth their
father, and
doth not
bless their mother.
There is a generation of those who
curse their
fathers and do not
bless their mothers.
The eye that mocketh at his
father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall
pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.
As for the eye that mocks a
father and scorns obedience to a mother, may the ravens of the valley
pluck it out and young vultures
devour it.
The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the
fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.
The wise man has eyes in his head, but the
fool walks in darkness. Yet I also came to
realize that one
fate overcomes them both.
Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the
fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.
So I said to myself, “The
fate of the
fool will also
befall me. What then have I gained by being wise?” And I said to myself that this too is
futile.
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.
He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set
eternity in the hearts of men, yet they cannot
fathom the work that God has done from beginning to end.
For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other;
yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
For the
fates of both men and beasts are the same: As one dies, so dies the other—they all have the same breath. Man has no advantage over the animals, since everything is
futile.
If a man
beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.
A man may
father a hundred children and live for many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he is unsatisfied with his prosperity and does not even receive a proper burial, I say that a
stillborn child is better off than he.
That which is far off, and exceeding deep, who can find it out?
What exists is out of reach and very deep. Who can
fathom it?
All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the
sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.
It is the same for all: There is a common
fate for the righteous and the wicked, for the good and the bad, for the clean and the unclean, for the one who sacrifices and the one who does not. As it is for the good, so it is for the
sinner; as it is for the one who makes a
vow, so it is for the one who refuses to take a
vow.
This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all:
yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
This is an evil in everything that is done under the sun: There is one
fate for
everyone.
Furthermore, the hearts of men are full of evil and madness while they are alive, and afterward they join the dead.
To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.
“What good to Me is your multitude of sacrifices?” says the LORD. “I am full from the burnt offerings of rams and the fat of well-fed cattle; I take no delight in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats.
Learn to do right; seek justice and correct the
oppressor. Defend the
fatherless and
plead the case of the widow.”
Thy princes are
rebellious, and companions of
thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the
fatherless, neither
doth the cause of the widow come unto them.
Your rulers are rebels, friends of
thieves. They all love bribes and
chasing after rewards. They do not defend the
fatherless, and the
plea of the widow never comes before them.
When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand:
A man will seize his brother within his
father’s house: “You have a
cloak—you be our leader! Take charge of this
heap of
rubble.”
Then shall the lambs feed after their manner, and the waste places of the fat ones shall strangers eat.
Lambs will
graze as in their own pastures, and strangers will feed in the ruins of the wealthy.
Make the heart of this people
fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be
healed.
Make the hearts of this people calloused;
deafen their ears and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be
healed.”
The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.
The LORD will bring on you and on your people and on the house of your father a time unlike any since the day Ephraim separated from Judah—He will bring the king of Assyria.”
For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My
father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the
spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.
For before the boy knows how to cry ‘
Father’ or ‘Mother,’ the wealth of Damascus and the
plunder of Samaria will be carried off by the king of Assyria.”
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The
everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful
Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their
fatherless and widows: for every one is an
hypocrite and an
evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
Therefore the Lord takes no pleasure in their young men; He has no
compassion on their
fatherless and widows. For every one of them is godless and wicked, and every mouth speaks folly.
Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised.
To turn aside the
needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and that they may
rob the
fatherless!
to deprive the poor of fair treatment and
withhold justice from the
oppressed of My people, to make widows their prey and orphans their
plunder.
Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his
fat ones
leanness; and under his glory he shall
kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.
Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts will send a wasting disease among Assyria’s
stout warriors, and under his
pomp will be
kindled a fire like a burning flame.
The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the
leopard shall lie down with the
kid; and the
calf and the young lion and the
fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.
The wolf will live with the lamb, and the
leopard will lie down with the goat; the
calf and young lion and
fatling will be together, and a little child will lead them.
They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to
tremble, that did
shake kingdoms;
Those who see you will
stare; they will
ponder your
fate: “Is this the man who
shook the earth and made the kingdoms
tremble,
Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.
Prepare a place to slaughter his sons for the
iniquities of their forefathers. They will never rise up to possess a land or cover the earth with their cities.
And in that day it shall come to pass, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the
fatness of his flesh shall wax
lean.
“In that day the
splendor of Jacob will
fade, and the
fat of his body will waste away,
And I will
clothe him with thy
robe, and
strengthen him with thy
girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a
father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
I will
clothe him with your
robe and
tie your
sash around him. I will put your authority in his hand, and he will be a
father to the dwellers of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
And I will
fasten him as a
nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his
father’s house.
I will drive him like a
peg into a firm place, and he will be a throne of glory for the house of his
father.
And they shall
hang upon him all the glory of his
father’s house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from the vessels of cups, even to all the vessels of flagons.
So they will
hang on him all the glory of his
father’s house: the descendants and the offshoots—all the lesser vessels, from
bowls to every kind of
jar.
And in this mountain shall the LORD of hosts make unto all people a feast of
fat things, a feast of wines on the
lees, of
fat things full of
marrow, of wines on the
lees well refined.
On this mountain the LORD of Hosts will prepare a
banquet for all the peoples, a feast of aged wine, of choice meat, of finely aged wine.
Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a
fading flower, which are on the head of the
fat valleys of them that are overcome with wine!
Woe to the
majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards, to the
fading flower of his glorious
splendor, set on the summit above the fertile valley, the pride of those overcome by wine.
And the glorious beauty, which is on the head of the
fat valley, shall be a
fading flower, and as the
hasty fruit before the summer; which when he that looketh upon it
seeth, while it is yet in his hand he eateth it up.
The
fading flower of his beautiful
splendor, set on the summit above the fertile valley, will be like a ripe fig before the summer harvest:
Whoever sees it will take it in his hand and
swallow it.
Then shall he give the rain of thy seed, that thou shalt
sow the ground
withal; and bread of the increase of the earth, and it shall be
fat and
plenteous: in that day shall thy cattle feed in large pastures.
Then He will send rain for the seed that you have sown in the ground, and the food that comes from your land will be rich and
plentiful. On that day your cattle will
graze in open pastures.
The sword of the LORD is filled with blood, it is made
fat with
fatness, and with the blood of lambs and goats, with the
fat of the
kidneys of rams: for the LORD hath a sacrifice in
Bozrah, and a great slaughter in the land of
Idumea.
The sword of the LORD is bathed in blood. It drips with
fat— with the blood of lambs and goats, with the
fat of the
kidneys of rams. For the LORD has a sacrifice in
Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of
Edom.
And the unicorns shall come down with them, and the bullocks with the bulls; and their land shall be
soaked with blood, and their dust made
fat with
fatness.
And the wild oxen will fall with them, the young bulls with the strong ones. Their land will be
drenched with blood, and their soil will be
soaked with
fat.
Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my
fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and
Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of
Eden which were in Telassar?
Did the gods of the nations destroyed by my
fathers rescue those nations—the gods of Gozan,
Haran, and Rezeph, and of the people of
Eden in Telassar?
Go, and say to
Hezekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy
father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.
“Go and tell
Hezekiah that this is what the LORD, the God of your
father David, says: ‘I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life.
The living, the living, he shall praise thee, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known thy truth.
The living, only the living, can
thank You, as I do
today;
fathers will tell their children about Your faithfulness.
Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.
The time will surely come when everything in your palace and all that your fathers have stored up until this day will be carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says the LORD.
Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the
fat of thy sacrifices: but thou hast made me to serve with thy sins, thou hast
wearied me with thine
iniquities.
You have not bought Me sweet cane with your silver, nor satisfied Me with the
fat of your sacrifices. But you have burdened Me with your sins; you have
wearied Me with your
iniquities.
Woe unto him that saith unto his
father, What begettest thou? or to the woman, What hast thou brought forth?
Woe to him who says to his
father, ‘What have you
begotten?’ or to his mother, ‘What have you brought forth?’”
Thou art
wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.
You are
wearied by your many counselors; let them come forward now and save you— your astrologers who observe the stars, who monthly
predict your
fate.
And kings shall be thy
nursing fathers, and their queens thy
nursing mothers: they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and
lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be
ashamed that wait for me.
Kings will be your
foster fathers, and their queens your
nursing mothers. They will bow to you facedown and
lick the dust at your feet. Then you will know that I am the LORD; those who hope in Me will never be put to shame.”
Look unto Abraham your
father, and unto
Sarah that bare you: for I called him alone, and blessed him, and increased him.
Look to Abraham your
father, and to
Sarah who gave you birth. When I called him, he was but one; then I blessed him and multiplied him.
Wherefore do ye
spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?
hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in
fatness.
Why
spend money on that which is not bread, and your labor on that which does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of foods.
And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in
drought, and make
fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.
The LORD will always guide you; He will satisfy you in a sun-
scorched land and
strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.
Then shalt thou delight
thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to
ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the
heritage of Jacob thy
father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
then you will delight
yourself in the LORD, and I will make you
ride on the heights of the land and feed you with the
heritage of your
father Jacob.” For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
Doubtless thou art our
father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our
father, our
redeemer; thy name is from
everlasting.
Yet You are our
Father, though Abraham does not know us and Israel does not acknowledge us. You, O LORD, are our
Father; our
Redeemer from
Everlasting is Your name.
But now, O LORD, thou art our
father; we are the clay, and thou our
potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.
But now, O LORD, You are our
Father; we are the clay, and You are the
potter; we are all the work of Your hand.
Our holy and our beautiful house, where our fathers praised thee, is burned up with fire: and all our pleasant things are laid waste.
Our holy and beautiful temple, where our
fathers praised You, has been burned with fire, and all that was
dear to us lies in ruins.
Your
iniquities, and the
iniquities of your
fathers together, saith the LORD, which have burned incense upon the mountains, and
blasphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their
bosom.
both for your
iniquities and for those of your
fathers,” says the LORD. “Because they burned incense on the mountains and
scorned Me on the hills, I will measure into their laps full payment for their former deeds.”
Thus saith the LORD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?
This is what the LORD says: “What fault did your
fathers find in Me that they
strayed so far from Me, and followed worthless idols, and became worthless themselves?
Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.
say to a tree, ‘You are my
father,’ and to a stone, ‘You gave me birth.’ For they have turned their backs to Me and not their faces, yet in the time of trouble they
beg, ‘Rise up and save us!’
Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My
father, thou art the guide of my youth?
Have you not just called to Me, ‘My Father, You are my friend from youth.
In those days the house of Judah shall walk with the house of Israel, and they shall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.
In those days the house of Judah will walk with the house of Israel, and they will come together from the land of the north to the land that I gave to your fathers as an inheritance.
But I said, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleasant land, a goodly
heritage of the hosts of nations? and I said, Thou shalt call me, My
father; and shalt not turn away from me.
Then I said, ‘How I long to make you My sons and give you a desirable land, the most beautiful inheritance of all the nations!’ I thought you would call Me ‘Father’ and never turn away from following Me.
For shame hath
devoured the labour of our
fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters.
From our youth, that shameful god has consumed what our fathers have worked for— their flocks and herds, their sons and daughters.
We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have
sinned against the LORD our God, we and our
fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.
Let us lie down in our shame; let our disgrace cover us. We have
sinned against the LORD our God, both we and our
fathers; from our youth even to this day we have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God.”
They are
waxen fat, they
shine:
yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the
fatherless, yet they
prosper; and the right of the
needy do they not judge.
They have grown
fat and
sleek, and have
excelled in the deeds of the wicked. They have not taken up the cause of the
fatherless, that they might
prosper; nor have they defended the rights of the
needy.
Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbour and his friend shall perish.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “I will lay
stumbling blocks before this people;
fathers and sons alike will be
staggered; friends and neighbors will perish.”
If ye
oppress not the stranger, the
fatherless, and the widow, and shed not innocent blood in this place, neither walk after other gods to your
hurt:
if you no longer
oppress the foreigner and the
fatherless and the widow, and if you no longer shed innocent blood in this place or follow other gods to your own
harm,
Then will I cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers, for ever and ever.
then I will let you live in this place, in the land that I gave to your
fathers forever and ever.
Therefore will I do unto this house, which is called by my name, wherein ye trust, and unto the place which I gave to you and to your
fathers, as I have done to
Shiloh.
therefore what I did to
Shiloh I will now do to the house that bears My Name, the house in which you trust, the place that I gave to you and your
fathers.
The children gather wood, and the
fathers kindle the fire, and the women
knead their
dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may
provoke me to anger.
The sons gather wood, the
fathers light the fire, and the women
knead the
dough to make cakes for the Queen of Heaven; they pour out drink offerings to other gods to
provoke Me to anger.
For I spake not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices:
For when I brought your fathers out of the land of Egypt, I did not merely command them about burnt offerings and sacrifices,
Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day I have even sent unto you all my servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them:
From the day your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have sent you all My servants the prophets again and again.
Yet they
hearkened not unto me, nor inclined their ear, but
hardened their neck: they did worse than their
fathers.
Yet they would not
listen to Me or
incline their ear, but they
stiffened their necks and did more evil than their
fathers.
But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after
Baalim, which their
fathers taught them:
Instead, they have followed the
stubbornness of their hearts and gone after the Baals, as their
fathers taught them.”
I will
scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their
fathers have known: and I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them.
I will
scatter them among the nations that neither they nor their
fathers have known, and I will send a sword after them until I have finished them off.”
Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, saying, Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you: so shall ye be my people, and I will be your God:
which I commanded your forefathers when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace, saying, ‘Obey Me, and do everything I command you, and you will be My people, and I will be your God.’
That I may perform the oath which I have
sworn unto your
fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day. Then answered I, and said, So be it, O LORD.
This was in order to establish the oath I
swore to your forefathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is to this day.” “
Amen, LORD,” I answered.
For I earnestly
protested unto your
fathers in the day that I brought them up out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day, rising early and
protesting, saying, Obey my voice.
For from the time I brought your
fathers out of the land of Egypt until
today, I strongly
warned them again and again, saying, ‘Obey My voice.’
They are turned back to the
iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after other gods to serve them: the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant which I made with their
fathers.
They have returned to the sins of their forefathers who refused to obey My words. They have followed other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken the covenant I made with their fathers.
For even thy brethren, and the house of thy
father, even they have dealt
treacherously with thee;
yea, they have called a multitude after thee: believe them not, though they speak fair words unto thee.
Even your brothers— your own
father’s household— even they have
betrayed you; even they have
cried aloud against you. Do not trust them, though they speak well of you.
And I will
dash them one against another, even the
fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not
pity, nor
spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.
I will
smash them against one another,
fathers and sons alike, declares the LORD. I will allow no mercy or
pity or
compassion to keep Me from destroying them.’”
We acknowledge, O LORD, our wickedness, and the iniquity of our
fathers: for we have
sinned against thee.
We acknowledge our wickedness, O LORD, the guilt of our
fathers; indeed, we have
sinned against You.
For thus saith the LORD concerning the sons and concerning the daughters that are born in this place, and concerning their mothers that bare them, and concerning their
fathers that
begat them in this land;
For this is what the LORD says concerning the sons and daughters born in this place, and the mothers who bore them, and the fathers who fathered them in this land:
Neither shall men
tear themselves for them in
mourning, to comfort them for the dead; neither shall men give them the cup of
consolation to drink for their
father or for their mother.
No food will be offered to comfort those who
mourn the dead; not even a cup of
consolation will be given for the loss of a
father or mother.
Then shalt thou say unto them, Because your
fathers have
forsaken me, saith the LORD, and have walked after other gods, and have served them, and have worshipped them, and have
forsaken me, and have not kept my law;
Then you are to answer them: ‘It is because your
fathers have
forsaken Me, declares the LORD, and followed other gods, and served and worshiped them. They abandoned Me and did not keep My instruction.
And ye have done worse than your
fathers; for, behold, ye walk every one after the imagination of his evil heart, that they may not
hearken unto me:
And you have done more evil than your
fathers. See how each of you follows the
stubbornness of his evil heart instead of obeying Me.
Therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land that ye know not, neither ye nor your
fathers; and there shall ye serve other gods day and night; where I will not
shew you favour.
So I will cast you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your fathers have known. There you will serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.’
But, The LORD liveth, that brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the lands
whither he had driven them: and I will bring them again into their land that I gave unto their
fathers.
Instead they will say, ‘As surely as the LORD lives, who brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north and all the other lands to which He had banished them.’ For I will return them to their land that I gave to their forefathers.
O LORD, my strength, and my fortress, and my refuge in the day of
affliction, the Gentiles shall come unto thee from the ends of the earth, and shall say, Surely our
fathers have inherited lies, vanity, and things wherein there is no profit.
O LORD, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in the day of distress, the nations will come to You from the ends of the earth, and they will say, “Our fathers inherited nothing but lies, worthless idols of no benefit at all.
Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but
hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your
fathers.
You must not carry a load out of your houses or do any work on the Sabbath day, but you must keep the Sabbath day holy, just as I commanded your forefathers.
Because they have
forsaken me, and have
estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their
fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;
because they have abandoned Me and made this a foreign place. They have burned incense in this place to other gods that neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have ever known. They have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.
Cursed be the man who brought
tidings to my
father, saying, A man child is born unto thee; making him very
glad.
Cursed be the man who brought my
father the news, saying, “A son is born to you,” bringing him great joy.
Thus saith the LORD;
Execute ye judgment and righteousness, and deliver the
spoiled out of the hand of the
oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the
fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.
This is what the LORD says:
Administer justice and righteousness.
Rescue the
victim of
robbery from the hand of his
oppressor. Do no wrong or violence to the foreigner, the
fatherless, or the widow. Do not shed innocent blood in this place.
For thus saith the LORD touching Shallum the son of
Josiah king of Judah, which reigned instead of
Josiah his
father, which went forth out of this place; He shall not return thither any more:
For this is what the LORD says concerning Shallum son of
Josiah, king of Judah, who succeeded his
father Josiah but has gone forth from this place: “He will never return,
Shalt thou reign, because thou closest
thyself in
cedar? did not thy
father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him?
Does it make you a king to
excel in
cedar? Did not your
father have food and drink? He administered justice and righteousness, and so it went well with him.
Which think to cause my people to
forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their
fathers have forgotten my name for
Baal.
They suppose the dreams that they tell one another will make My people
forget My name, just as their
fathers forgot My name through the worship of
Baal.
Therefore, behold, I, even I, will utterly
forget you, and I will
forsake you, and the city that I gave you and your
fathers, and cast you out of my presence:
therefore I will surely
forget you and will cast you out of My presence, both you and the city that I gave to you and your
fathers.
And I will send the sword, the famine, and the
pestilence, among them, till they be consumed from off the land that I gave unto them and to their
fathers.
And I will send against them sword and famine and plague, until they have perished from the land that I gave to them and their fathers.’”
They said, Turn ye again now every one from his evil way, and from the evil of your doings, and dwell in the land that the LORD hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever:
The prophets told you, ‘Turn now, each of you, from your evil ways and deeds, and you can dwell in the land that the LORD has given to you and your
fathers forever and ever.
For, lo, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, saith the LORD: and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.
For behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will restore from captivity My people Israel and Judah, declares the LORD. I will restore them to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they will possess it.’”
They shall come with
weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not
stumble: for I am a
father to Israel, and Ephraim is my
firstborn.
They will come with
weeping, and by their
supplication I will lead them; I will make them walk beside streams of waters, on a level path where they will not
stumble. For I am Israel’s
Father, and Ephraim is My
firstborn.”
And I will
satiate the soul of the priests with
fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the LORD.
I will fill the souls of the priests abundantly, and will fill My people with My goodness,” declares the LORD.
In those days they shall say no more, The
fathers have eaten a
sour grape, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.
“In those days, it will no longer be said: ‘The
fathers have eaten
sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge.’
Not according to the covenant that I made with their
fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they
brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt— a covenant they broke, though I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD.
