For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and
bud, that it may give seed to the
sower, and bread to the eater:

bud and
sprout, and providing seed to
sow and
food to eat,

sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured:

But we will certainly do
whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we, and our fathers, our kings, and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we
plenty of
victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.
Instead, we will do everything we
vowed to do: We will burn incense to the Queen of Heaven and offer drink offerings to her, just as we, our fathers, our kings, and our officials did in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. At that time we had
plenty of
food and good things, and we saw no
disaster.

All her people
sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to
relieve the soul: see, O LORD, and consider; for I am become
vile.
All her people
groan as they search for bread. They have traded their treasures for
food to keep themselves alive. Look, O LORD, and consider, for I have become
despised.
I called for my lovers, but they
deceived me: my priests and mine elders gave up the ghost in the city, while they sought their meat to
relieve their souls.
I called out to my lovers, but they have
betrayed me. My priests and elders perished in the city while they searched for
food to keep themselves alive.
The hands of the
pitiful women have
sodden their own children: they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people.

compassionate women have

food in the destruction of the daughter of my people.
And thy meat which thou shalt eat shall be by weight, twenty shekels a day: from time to time shalt thou eat it.
You are to
weigh out twenty shekels of
food to eat each day, and you are to eat it at set times.
And thou shalt eat it as barley cakes, and thou shalt
bake it with dung that cometh out of man, in their sight.
And you shall eat the
food as you would a barley
cake, after you
bake it over dried human
excrement in the sight of the people.”
Moreover he said unto me, Son of man, behold, I will break the staff of bread in Jerusalem: and they shall eat bread by weight, and with care; and they shall drink water by measure, and with
astonishment:
Then He told me, “Son of man, I am going to cut off the supply of
food in Jerusalem. They will anxiously eat bread rationed by weight, and in
despair they will drink water by measure.
That they may want bread and water, and be
astonied one with another, and
consume away for their iniquity.
So they will lack
food and water; they will be
appalled at the sight of one another wasting away in their iniquity.
When I shall send upon them the evil arrows of famine, which shall be for their destruction, and which I will send to destroy you: and I will increase the famine upon you, and will break your staff of bread:
When I shower you with the deadly arrows of famine and destruction that I will send to destroy you, I will
intensify the famine against you and cut off your supply of
food.
Son of man, when the land sinneth against me by
trespassing grievously, then will I stretch out mine hand upon it, and will break the staff of the bread thereof, and will send famine upon it, and will cut off man and beast from it:
“Son of man, if a land sins against Me by acting unfaithfully, and I stretch out My hand against it to cut off its supply of food, to send famine upon it, and to cut off from it both man and beast,
My meat also which I gave thee, fine flour, and oil, and honey,
wherewith I fed thee, thou hast even set it before them for a sweet savour: and thus it was, saith the Lord GOD.
And you set before them as a pleasing
aroma the
food I had given you—the fine flour, oil, and honey that I had fed you. That is what happened, declares the Lord GOD.
Moreover thou hast taken thy sons and thy daughters, whom thou hast borne unto me, and these hast thou sacrificed unto them to be
devoured. Is this of thy whoredoms a small matter,
You even took the sons and daughters you bore to Me and sacrificed them as
food to idols. Was your
prostitution not enough?
Behold, therefore I have stretched out my hand over thee, and have diminished thine ordinary
food, and delivered thee unto the will of them that
hate thee, the daughters of the Philistines, which are
ashamed of thy
lewd way.
Therefore I stretched out My hand against you and reduced your portion. I gave you over to the desire of those who
hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were
ashamed of your
lewd conduct.
That they have committed
adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed
adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to
devour them.
For they have committed
adultery, and blood is on their hands. They have committed
adultery with their idols. They have even sacrificed their children, whom they bore to Me, in the fire as
food for their idols.
And I will leave thee thrown into the wilderness, thee and all the fish of thy rivers: thou shalt fall upon the open fields; thou shalt not be brought together, nor gathered: I have given thee for meat to the beasts of the field and to the fowls of the heaven.

And they were scattered, because there is no
shepherd: and they became meat to all the beasts of the field, when they were scattered.
They were scattered for lack of a
shepherd, and when they were scattered they became
food for all the wild beasts.
As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat to every beast of the field, because there was no
shepherd, neither did my
shepherds search for my flock, but the
shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my flock;
‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, because My flock lacks a
shepherd and has become prey and
food for every wild beast, and because My
shepherds did not search for My flock but fed themselves instead,
Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against the
shepherds; and I will require my flock at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither shall the
shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them.
This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I am against the
shepherds, and I will demand from them My flock and remove them from tending the flock, so that they can no longer feed themselves. For I will deliver My flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be
food for them.’
Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the
ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be
devoured.
On the mountains of Israel you will fall—you and all your troops and the nations with you. I will give you as
food to every kind of
ravenous bird and wild beast.
In that ye have brought into my sanctuary strangers,
uncircumcised in heart, and
uncircumcised in flesh, to be in my sanctuary, to
pollute it, even my house, when ye offer my bread, the fat and the blood, and they have broken my covenant because of all your abominations.
In addition to all your other abominations, you brought in foreigners
uncircumcised in both heart and flesh to occupy My sanctuary; you
defiled My temple when you offered My
food—the fat and the blood; you broke My covenant.
And by the river upon the bank thereof, on this side and on that side, shall grow all trees for meat, whose leaf shall not
fade, neither shall the fruit thereof be consumed: it shall bring forth new fruit according to his months, because their waters they issued out of the sanctuary: and the fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.
Along both banks of the river, fruit trees of all kinds will grow. Their leaves will not wither, and their fruit will not fail. Each month they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will be used for
food and their leaves for
healing.”
And the residue in length over against the
oblation of the holy portion shall be ten thousand eastward, and ten thousand westward: and it shall be over against the
oblation of the holy portion; and the increase thereof shall be for
food unto them that serve the city.
The remainder of the length bordering the holy portion and running adjacent to it will be 10,000 cubits on the east side and 10,000 cubits on the west side. Its produce will supply food for the workers of the city.

drank: so
nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
The king assigned them daily provisions of the royal food and wine. They were to be trained for three years, after which they were to enter the king’s service.
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not
defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he
drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not
defile himself.
But Daniel made up his mind that he would not
defile himself with the king’s
food or wine. So he asked the chief official for permission not to
defile himself.
And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me
endanger my head to the king.
but he said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king, who has assigned your
food and drink. For why should he see your faces looking
thinner than those of the other young men your age? You would
endanger my head before the king!”
Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.
Then compare our appearances with those of the young men who are eating the royal food, and deal with your servants according to what you see.”
And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat.
And at the end of ten days, they looked healthier and better
nourished than all the young men who were eating the king’s
food.
