And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest:
for all the city of my people
doth know that thou art a
virtuous woman.
And now do not be afraid, my daughter. I will do for you whatever you request, since all my fellow townspeople know that you are a woman of noble character.
And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her.
When
Ruth returned to her mother-in-law,
Naomi asked her, “How did it go, my daughter?” Then
Ruth told her all that Boaz had done
for her.
And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law.
And she said, “He gave me these six measures of barley, for he said, ‘Do not go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’”
Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day.
“Wait, my daughter,” said
Naomi, “until you find out how things go,
for he will not rest unless he has resolved the matter
today.”
And I thought to
advertise thee, saying,
Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders of my people. If thou
wilt redeem it,
redeem it: but if thou
wilt not
redeem it, then tell me, that I may know:
for there is none to
redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee. And he said, I will
redeem it.
I thought I should inform you that you may
buy it back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to
redeem it, do so. But if you will not
redeem it, tell me so I may know, because there is no one but you to
redeem it, and I am next after you.” “I will
redeem it,” he replied.
Now this was the manner in
former time in Israel concerning
redeeming and concerning changing,
for to
confirm all things; a man
plucked off his
shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel.
Now in
former times in Israel, concerning the
redemption or exchange of property, to make any matter legally binding a man would remove his
sandal and give it to the other party, and this was a
confirmation in Israel.
Therefore the
kinsman said unto Boaz,
Buy it
for thee. So he drew off his
shoe.
And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a
nourisher of thine old age:
for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.
He will renew your life and
sustain you in your old age.
For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.”
And when the time was that Elkanah offered, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:
And whenever the day came for Elkanah to present his sacrifice, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.
But unto
Hannah he gave a worthy portion;
for he loved
Hannah: but the LORD had shut up her
womb.
But to
Hannah he would give a double portion,
for he loved her even though the LORD had closed her
womb.
And she
vowed a
vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou
wilt indeed look on the
affliction of thine
handmaid, and remember me, and not
forget thine
handmaid, but
wilt give unto thine
handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no
razor come upon his head.
Count not thine
handmaid for a daughter of
Belial:
for out of the abundance of my
complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto.
Do not take your servant
for a wicked woman;
for all this time I have been praying out of the depth of my
anguish and grief.”
Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after
Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.
So in the course of time,
Hannah conceived and gave birth to a son. She named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked
for him from the LORD.”
But
Hannah went not up;
for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be
weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the LORD, and there
abide for ever.
but
Hannah did not go. “After the boy is
weaned,” she said to her husband, “I will take him to appear before the LORD and to stay there permanently.”
For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him:
I prayed for this boy, and since the LORD has granted me what I asked of Him,
Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD. And he worshipped the LORD there.
I now
dedicate the boy to the LORD.
For as long as he lives, he is dedicated to the LORD.” So they worshiped the LORD there.
And
Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is
exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I
rejoice in thy salvation.
At that time
Hannah prayed: “My heart rejoices in the LORD in whom my horn is
exalted. My mouth speaks boldly against my enemies,
for I
rejoice in Your salvation.
There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.
There is no one holy like the LORD. Indeed, there is no one besides You! And there is no Rock like our God.
Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not
arrogancy come out of your mouth:
for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are
weighed.
Do not
boast so proudly, or let
arrogance come from your mouth,
for the LORD is a God who knows, and by Him actions are
weighed.
They that were full have
hired out themselves
for bread; and they that were
hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.
The well-fed
hire themselves out
for food, but the
starving hunger no more. The barren woman gives birth to seven, but she who has many sons pines away.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the
beggar from the
dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them
inherit the throne of glory:
for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.
He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the
needy from the ash
heap. He seats them among princes and bestows on them a throne of honor.
For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s, and upon them He has set the world.
He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.
He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness; for by his own strength shall no man prevail.
Now the sons of
Eli were sons of
Belial; they knew not the LORD.
Now the sons of
Eli were wicked men; they had no regard
for the LORD
And the priest’s custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant came, while the flesh was in
seething, with a
fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;
or
for the custom of the priests with the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the servant of the priest would come with a three-
pronged meat
fork while the meat was boiling
And he struck it into the pan, or
kettle, or
caldron, or pot; all that the
fleshhook brought up the priest took
for himself. So they did in
Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither.
and
plunge it into the pan or
kettle or cauldron or
cooking pot. And the priest would claim
for himself whatever the meat
fork brought up. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to
Shiloh.
Also before they burnt the fat, the priest’s servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to
roast for the priest;
for he will not have
sodden flesh of thee, but raw.
Even before the fat was burned, the servant of the priest would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to
roast, because he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw.”
And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him,
Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by
force.
And if any man said to him, “The fat must be burned first; then you may take whatever you want,” the servant would reply, “No, you must give it to me right now. If you refuse, I will take it by force!”
Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD:
for men
abhorred the offering of the LORD.
Thus the sin of these young men was severe in the sight of the LORD, for they were treating the LORD’s offering with contempt.
And
Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman
for the
loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home.
And
Eli would
bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, “May the LORD give you children by this woman in place of the one she dedicated to the LORD.” Then they would go home.
And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.
“Why are you doing these things?”
Eli said to his sons. “I hear about your wicked deeds from all these people.
Nay, my sons;
for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the LORD’S people to
transgress.
No, my sons; it is not a good report I hear
circulating among the LORD’s people.
If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat
for him? Notwithstanding they
hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would
slay them.
If a man sins against another man, God can
intercede for him; but if a man sins against the LORD, who can
intercede for him?” But they would not
listen to their father, since the LORD intended to put them to death.
Wherefore
kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my
habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make
yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?
Why then do you
kick at My sacrifice and offering that I have prescribed
for My dwelling place? You have honored your sons more than Me by
fattening yourselves with the best of all the offerings of My people Israel.’
Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me
for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me;
for them that honour me I will honour, and they that
despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I did indeed say that your house and the house of your father would walk before Me
forever. But now the LORD declares: Far be it from Me!
For I will honor those who honor Me, but those who
despise Me will be
disdained.
And thou shalt see an enemy in my
habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house
for ever.
You will see distress in My dwelling place.
Despite all that is good in Israel, no one in your house will ever again reach old age.
And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine
anointed for ever.
Then I will raise up
for Myself a faithful priest. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. And I will build
for him an
enduring house, and he will walk before My
anointed one
for all time.
And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and
crouch to him
for a piece of silver and a
morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests’ offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
And
everyone left in your house will come and bow down to him
for a piece of silver or a
morsel of bread,
pleading, “Please
appoint me to some priestly office so that I can eat a piece of bread.”’”
And he ran unto
Eli, and said, Here am I;
for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down.
He ran to
Eli and said, “Here I am,
for you have called me.” “I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.” So he went and lay down.
And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to
Eli, and said, Here am I;
for thou
didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again.
Once again the LORD called, “Samuel!” So Samuel got up, went to
Eli, and said, “Here I am,
for you have called me.” “My son, I did not call,”
Eli replied. “Go back and lie down.”
And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to
Eli, and said, Here am I;
for thou
didst call me. And
Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child.
Once again,
for the third time, the LORD called to Samuel. He got up, went to
Eli, and said, “Here I am,
for you have called me.” Then
Eli realized that it was the LORD who was calling the boy.
Therefore
Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD;
for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
“Go and lie down,” he said to Samuel, “and if He calls you, say, ‘Speak, LORD,
for Your servant is
listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth.
Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel answered, “Speak,
for Your servant is
listening.”
For I have told him that I will judge his house
for ever
for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves
vile, and he restrained them not.
I told him that I would judge his house
forever for the iniquity of which he knows, because his sons
blasphemed God and he did not restrain them.
And therefore I have
sworn unto the house of
Eli, that the iniquity of
Eli’s house shall not be
purged with sacrifice nor offering
for ever.
Therefore I have
sworn to the house of
Eli, ‘The iniquity of
Eli’s house shall never be
atoned for by sacrifice or offering.’”
And the LORD appeared again in
Shiloh:
for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in
Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
And the LORD continued to appear at
Shiloh, because there He revealed Himself to Samuel by His word.
And the Philistines were afraid,
for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said,
Woe unto us!
for there hath not been such a thing
heretofore.
the Philistines were afraid. “The gods have entered their camp!” they said. “
Woe to us,
for nothing like this has happened before.
And the Philistines fought, and Israel was
smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter;
for there fell of Israel thirty thousand
footmen.
So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and each man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great—thirty thousand foot soldiers of Israel fell.
And when he came, lo,
Eli sat upon a seat by the
wayside watching:
for his heart
trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city
cried out.
When he arrived, there was
Eli, sitting on his chair beside the road and watching, because his heart
trembled for the ark of God. When the man entered the city to give a report, the whole city
cried out.
And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck
brake, and he died:
for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel
forty years.
As soon as the ark of God was mentioned,
Eli fell backward from his chair by the city gate, and being old and heavy, he broke his neck and died. And
Eli had judged Israel
forty years.
And his daughter in law,
Phinehas’ wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the
tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and
travailed;
for her pains came upon her.
Now
Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of
Phinehas, was
pregnant and about to give birth. When she heard the news of the capture of God’s ark and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband, she
collapsed and gave birth,
for her labor pains overtook her.
And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.
As she was dying, the women attending to her said, “Do not be afraid,
for you have given birth to a son!” But she did not
respond or pay any
heed.
And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
“The glory has departed from Israel,” she said, “for the ark of God has been captured.”
And when the men of
Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of Israel shall not
abide with us:
for his hand is
sore upon us, and upon
Dagon our god.
And when the men of
Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, “The ark of the God of Israel must not stay here with us, because His hand is heavy upon us and upon our god
Dagon.”
So they sent and gathered together all the lords of the Philistines, and said, Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again to his own place, that it
slay us not, and our people:
for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the city; the hand of God was very heavy there.
Then the Ekronites assembled all the rulers of the Philistines and said, “Send away the ark of the God of Israel. It must return to its place, so that it will not kill us and our people!”
For a deadly confusion had
pervaded the city; the hand of God was heavy upon it.
And the Philistines called
for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall we do to the ark of the LORD? tell us
wherewith we shall send it to his place.
the Philistines summoned the priests and diviners, saying, “What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us how to send it back to its place.”
Then said they, What shall be the
trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden
emerods, and five golden
mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines:
for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.
“What guilt offering should we send back to Him?” asked the Philistines. “Five gold tumors and five gold rats,” they said, “according to the number of rulers of the Philistines, since the same plague has struck both you and your rulers.
And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the
cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him
for a
trespass offering, in a
coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.
Take the ark of the LORD, set it on the
cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending Him as a guilt offering. Then send the ark on its way,
As a guilt offering to the LORD, the Philistines had sent back one gold
tumor for each city:
Ashdod,
Gaza, Ashkelon,
Gath, and
Ekron.
And the golden
mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, both of
fenced cities, and of country villages, even unto the great stone of
Abel,
whereon they set down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day in the field of Joshua, the Beth-
shemite.
The number of gold rats also corresponded to the number of
Philistine cities belonging to the five rulers—the
fortified cities and their outlying villages. And the large rock on which they placed the ark of the LORD stands to this day in the field of Joshua of Beth-shemesh.
And the men of Kirjath-jearim came, and brought up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and
sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD.
Then the men of Kiriath-jearim came
for the ark of the LORD and took it into Abinadab’s house on the hill. And they consecrated his son
Eleazar to guard the ark of the LORD.
And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long;
for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel
lamented after the LORD.
And from that day a long time passed, twenty years in all, as the ark remained at Kiriath-jearim. And all the house of Israel
mourned and sought after the LORD.
And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and
Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.
Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid
yourselves of the
foreign gods and Ashtoreths among you, prepare your hearts
for the LORD, and serve Him only. And He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”
And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD.
Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to
Mizpah, and I will pray to the LORD on your behalf.”
And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.
and said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”
And Samuel took a
sucking lamb, and offered it
for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel
cried unto the LORD
for Israel; and the LORD heard him.
Then Samuel took a
suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. He
cried out to the LORD on behalf of Israel, and the LORD answered him.
And his return was to
Ramah;
for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD.
Then he would return to
Ramah because his home was there, and there he judged Israel and built an altar to the LORD.
And the LORD said unto Samuel,
Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee:
for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
And the LORD said to Samuel, “
Listen to the voice of the people in all that they say to you.
For it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected Me as their king.
According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day,
wherewith they have
forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee.
Just as they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day,
forsaking Me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.
And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king.
So Samuel spoke all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king.
And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and
appoint them
for himself,
for his
chariots, and to be his
horsemen; and some shall run before his
chariots.
He said, “This will be the manner of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and
appoint them to his own
chariots and horses, to run in front of his
chariots.
And he will
appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over
fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to
reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his
chariots.
He will
appoint some
for himself as commanders of thousands and of
fifties, and others to
plow his ground, to
reap his harvest, to make his weapons of war, and to
equip his
chariots.
And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.
When that day comes, you will
beg for relief from the king you have chosen, but the LORD will not answer you on that day.”
And the LORD said to Samuel,
Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.
“
Listen to their voice,” the LORD said to Samuel. “
Appoint a king
for them.” Then Samuel told the men of Israel, “
Everyone must go back to his city.”
And the
asses of
Kish Saul’s father were lost. And
Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the
asses.
And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring
for the
asses, and take thought
for us.
When they reached the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant, “Come, let us go back, or my father will stop
worrying about the
donkeys and start
worrying about us.”
Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?
“If we do go,” Saul replied, “what can we give the man? For the bread in our packs is gone, and there is no gift to take to the man of God. What do we have?”
(
Formerly in Israel, a man on his way to inquire of God would say, “Come, let us go to the
seer.”
For the prophet of
today was
formerly called the
seer.)
Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.
“Good,” said Saul to his servant. “Come, let us go.” So they set out for the city where the man of God was.
And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make
haste now,
for he came to day to the city;
for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:
“
Yes, he is
ahead of you,” they answered. “
Hurry now,
for today he has come to the city because the people have a sacrifice on the high place.
As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall
straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat:
for the people will not eat until he come, because he
doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be
bidden. Now therefore get you up;
for about this time ye shall find him.
As soon as you enter the city, you will find him before he goes up to the high place to eat. The people will not eat until he comes, because he must
bless the sacrifice; after that, the guests will eat. Go up at once; you will find him.”
And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.
So Saul and his servant went up toward the city, and as they were entering it, there was Samuel coming toward them on his way up to the high place.
To
morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt
anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines:
for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
“At this time
tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you are to
anoint him leader over My people Israel; he will save them from the hand of the Philistines.
For I have looked upon My people, because their cry has come to Me.”
And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the
seer: go up before me unto the high place;
for ye shall eat with me to day, and to
morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.
“I am the
seer,” Samuel replied. “Go up before me to the high place,
for you shall eat with me
today. And when I send you off in the morning, I will tell you all that is in your heart.
And as
for thine
asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them;
for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father’s house?
As
for the
donkeys you lost three days ago, do not
worry about them,
for they have been found. And upon whom is all the desire of Israel, if not upon you and all your father’s house?”
And the
cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat:
for unto this time hath it been kept
for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.
So the
cook picked up the leg and what was attached to it and set it before Saul. Then Samuel said, “Here is what was kept back. It was set apart
for you. Eat,
for it has been kept
for you
for this occasion, from the time I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul
dined with Samuel that day.
And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul,
Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may
shew thee the word of God.
As they were going down to the edge of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on
ahead of us, but you stay
for a while, and I will
reveal to you the word of God.” So the servant went on.
When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by
Rachel’s
sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The
asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the
asses, and sorroweth
for you, saying, What shall I do
for my son?
When you leave me
today, you will find two men at
Rachel’s tomb in Zelzah on the border of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The
donkeys you seek have been found, and now your father has stopped
worrying about the
donkeys and started
worrying about you, asking, “What should I do about my son?”’
Then shalt thou go on
forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of
Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to
Bethel, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three
loaves of bread, and another carrying a
bottle of wine:
Then you will go on from there until you come to the Oak of
Tabor. Three men going up to God at
Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three
loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine.
And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.
When these signs have come, do as the occasion demands, for God is with you.
And it came to pass, when all that knew him
beforetime saw that, behold, he
prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?
All those who had
formerly known Saul and saw him
prophesying with the prophets asked one another, “What has happened to the son of
Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
And Saul’s uncle said unto him and to his servant,
Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the
asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.
Now Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant, “Where did you go?” “To look
for the
donkeys,” Saul replied. “When we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.”
And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.
Thus Samuel had all the tribes of Israel come forward, and the tribe of Benjamin was selected.
When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of
Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.
Then he had the tribe of Benjamin come
forward by its clans, and the clan of Matri was selected. Finally, Saul son of
Kish was selected. But when they looked
for him, they could not find him.
And Nahash the
Ammonite answered them, On this condition will I make a covenant with you, that I may thrust out all your right eyes, and lay it
for a reproach upon all Israel.
But Nahash the
Ammonite replied, “I will make a treaty with you on one condition, that I may put out
everyone’s right eye and bring reproach upon all Israel.”
And the elders of
Jabesh said unto him, Give us seven days respite, that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel: and then, if there be no man to save us, we will come out to thee.
“Hold off
for seven days,” replied the elders of
Jabesh, “and let us send messengers throughout Israel. If there is no one to save us, we will surrender to you.”
And he took a yoke of oxen, and
hewed them in pieces, and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers, saying,
Whosoever cometh not
forth after Saul and after Samuel, so shall it be done unto his oxen. And the fear of the LORD fell on the people, and they came out with one consent.
He took a pair of oxen, cut them into pieces, and sent them by messengers throughout the land of Israel,
proclaiming, “This is what will be done to the oxen of
anyone who does not march behind Saul and Samuel.” Then the terror of the LORD fell upon the people, and they turned out as one man.
And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day: for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel.
But Saul ordered, “No one shall be put to death this day,
for today the LORD has worked salvation in Israel.”
Now therefore stand still, that I may reason with you before the LORD of all the righteous acts of the LORD, which he did to you and to your fathers.
Now present
yourselves, so that I may
confront you before the LORD with all the righteous acts He has done
for you and your fathers.
