And he said,
Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A
basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass by them any more.
“
Amos, what do you see?” He asked. “A
basket of summer fruit,” I replied. So the LORD said to me, “The end has come
for My people Israel; I will no longer
spare them.”
And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord GOD: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.
“In that day,” declares the Lord GOD, “the songs of the temple will turn to
wailing. Many will be the corpses,
strewn in silence everywhere!”
Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set
forth wheat, making the
ephah small, and the
shekel great, and
falsifying the balances by
deceit?
asking, “When will the New Moon be over, that we may sell grain? When will the Sabbath end, that we may market wheat? Let us reduce the
ephah and increase the
shekel; let us
cheat with
dishonest scales.
That we may
buy the poor
for silver, and the
needy for a pair of
shoes;
yea, and sell the refuse of the wheat?
Let us
buy the poor with silver and the
needy for a pair of
sandals, selling even the
chaff with the wheat!”
The LORD has
sworn by the Pride of Jacob: “I will never
forget any of their deeds.
Shall not the land
tremble for this, and every one
mourn that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise up wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast out and
drowned, as by the flood of Egypt.
Will not the land
quake for this, and all its dwellers
mourn? All of it will swell like the Nile; it will
surge and then
subside like the Nile in Egypt.
And I will turn your feasts into
mourning, and all your songs into
lamentation; and I will bring up
sackcloth upon all loins, and
baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the
mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a
thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:
Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord GOD, when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread or a
thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the LORD.
In that day shall the fair virgins and young men
faint for thirst.
In that day the lovely young women— the young men as well— will
faint from
thirst.
And though they go into captivity before their enemies, thence will I command the sword, and it shall
slay them: and I will set mine eyes upon them
for evil, and not
for good.
Though they are driven by their enemies into captivity, there I will command the sword to
slay them. I will fix My eyes upon them
for harm and not
for good.”
It is he that buildeth his stories in the heaven, and hath founded his
troop in the earth; he that calleth
for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name.
He builds His upper rooms in the heavens and founds His
vault upon the earth. He
summons the waters of the sea and pours them over the face of the earth. The LORD is His name.
For, lo, I will command, and I will
sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is
sifted in a
sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.
“
For surely I will give the command, and I will
shake the house of Israel among all the nations as grain is
sifted in a
sieve; but not a
pebble will reach the ground.
All the men of thy
confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have
deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.
All the men allied with you will drive you to the border; the men at peace with you will
deceive and overpower you. Those who eat your bread will set a
trap for you without your awareness of it.
For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.
Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame and cut off
forever.
In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away
captive his
forces, and
foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou
wast as one of them.
On the day you stood
aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and
foreigners entered his gate and cast lots
for Jerusalem, you were just like one of them.
For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
For the Day of the LORD is near
for all the nations. As you have done, it will be done to you; your
recompense will return upon your own head.
For as ye have
drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually,
yea, they shall drink, and they shall
swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.
For as you
drank on My holy mountain, so all the nations will drink continually. They will drink and
gulp it down; they will be as if they had never existed.
And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of
Esau for stubble, and they shall
kindle in them, and
devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of
Esau;
for the LORD hath spoken it.
Then the house of Jacob will be a
blazing fire, and the house of Joseph a burning flame; but the house of
Esau will be
stubble— Jacob will set it
ablaze and
consume it. Therefore no
survivor will remain from the house of
Esau.”
For the LORD has spoken.
Arise, go to
Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it;
for their wickedness is come up before me.
“Get up! Go to the great city of
Nineveh and
preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before Me.”
But
Jonah rose up to
flee unto
Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to
Joppa; and he found a ship going to
Tarshish: so he paid the
fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto
Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
Then the mariners were afraid, and
cried every man unto his god, and cast
forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to
lighten it of them. But
Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast
asleep.
The sailors were afraid, and each
cried out to his own god. And they threw the ship’s
cargo into the sea to
lighten the load. But
Jonah had gone down to the lowest part of the vessel, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know
for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon
Jonah.
“Come!” said the sailors to one another. “Let us cast lots to find out who is responsible
for this
calamity that is upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on
Jonah.
Then said they unto him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is upon us; What is thine occupation? and whence comest thou? what is thy country? and of what people art thou?
“Tell us now,” they demanded, “who is to
blame for this
calamity that is upon us? What is your occupation, and where have you come from? What is your country, and who are your people?”
Then were the men exceedingly afraid, and said unto him, Why hast thou done this? For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Then the men were even more afraid and said to him, “What have you done?” The men knew that he was
fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.
Then said they unto him, What shall we do unto thee, that the sea may be calm unto us?
for the sea wrought, and was
tempestuous.
Now the sea was growing worse and worse, so they said to
Jonah, “What must we do to you to calm this sea
for us?”
And he said unto them, Take me up, and cast me
forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you:
for I know that
for my sake this great
tempest is upon you.
“
Pick me up,” he answered, “and cast me into the sea, so it may quiet down
for you.
For I know that I am to
blame for this violent storm that has come upon you.”
Nevertheless the men rowed hard to bring it to the land; but they could not:
for the sea wrought, and was
tempestuous against them.
Nevertheless, the men rowed hard to get back to dry land, but they could not,
for the sea was
raging against them more and more.
Wherefore they
cried unto the LORD, and said, We
beseech thee, O LORD, we
beseech thee, let us not perish
for this man’s life, and lay not upon us innocent blood:
for thou, O LORD, hast done as it pleased thee.
So they
cried out to the LORD: “Please, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man’s life! Do not charge us with innocent blood!
For You, O LORD, have done as You pleased.”
So they took up
Jonah, and cast him
forth into the sea: and the sea ceased from her
raging.
At this, they
picked up
Jonah and cast him into the sea, and the
raging sea grew calm.
saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the
belly of
Sheol I called
for help, and You heard my voice.
For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.
For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current
swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me.
I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God.
To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me
barred me in
forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God!
Those who
cling to worthless idols
forsake His loving devotion.
And
Jonah began to enter into the city a day’s journey, and he
cried, and said, Yet
forty days, and
Nineveh shall be overthrown.
On the first day of his journey,
Jonah set out into the city and proclaimed, “
Forty more days and
Nineveh will be overturned!”
For word came unto the king of
Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his
robe from him, and covered him with
sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
When word reached the king of
Nineveh, he got up from his throne, took off his royal
robe, covered himself with
sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
And he prayed unto the LORD, and said, I pray thee, O LORD, was not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled before unto
Tarshish:
for I knew that thou art a
gracious God, and
merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest thee of the evil.
So he prayed to the LORD, saying, “O LORD, is this not what I said while I was still in my own country? This is why I was so quick to
flee toward
Tarshish. I knew that You are a
gracious and
compassionate God, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion—One who relents from sending
disaster.
Therefore now, O LORD, take, I
beseech thee, my life from me;
for it is better
for me to die than to live.
And now, O LORD, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.”
And it came to pass, when the sun did arise, that God prepared a
vehement east wind; and the sun beat upon the head of
Jonah, that he
fainted, and wished in himself to die, and said, It is better
for me to die than to live.
As the sun was rising, God appointed a
scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on
Jonah’s head so that he grew
faint and wished to die, saying, “It is better
for me to die than to live.”
And God said to
Jonah, Doest thou well to be
angry for the
gourd? And he said, I do well to be
angry, even unto death.
Then God asked
Jonah, “Have you any right to be
angry about the plant?” “I do,” he replied. “I am
angry enough to die!”
Then said the LORD, Thou hast had
pity on the
gourd,
for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night:
But the LORD said, “You cared about the plant, which you neither tended nor made grow. It
sprang up in a night and perished in a night.
For, behold, the LORD cometh
forth out of his place, and will come down, and
tread upon the high places of the earth.
For behold, the LORD comes
forth from His dwelling place; He will come down and
tread on the high places of the earth.
For the
transgression of Jacob is all this, and
for the sins of the house of Israel. What is the
transgression of Jacob? is it not Samaria? and what are the high places of Judah? are they not Jerusalem?
All this is
for the
transgression of Jacob and the sins of the house of Israel. What is the
transgression of Jacob? Is it not Samaria? And what is the high place of Judah? Is it not Jerusalem?
Therefore I will make Samaria as an
heap of the field, and as plantings of a
vineyard: and I will pour down the stones thereof into the valley, and I will discover the foundations thereof.
Therefore I will make Samaria a
heap of
rubble in the open field, a planting area
for a
vineyard. I will pour her stones into the valley and
expose her foundations.
And all the
graven images thereof shall be beaten to pieces, and all the
hires thereof shall be burned with the fire, and all the idols thereof will I lay
desolate:
for she gathered it of the
hire of an
harlot, and they shall return to the
hire of an
harlot.
All her carved images will be
smashed to pieces; all her wages will be burned in the fire, and I will destroy all her idols. Since she collected the wages of a
prostitute, they will be used again on a
prostitute.
For her wound is incurable; for it is come unto Judah; he is come unto the gate of my people, even to Jerusalem.
For her wound is incurable; it has reached even Judah; it has approached the gate of my people, as far as Jerusalem itself.
Pass ye away, thou inhabitant of Saphir, having thy shame naked: the inhabitant of Zaanan came not
forth in the
mourning of Beth-ezel; he shall receive of you his standing.
Depart in shameful nakedness, O dwellers of Shaphir. The dwellers of Zaanan will not come out. Beth-ezel is in
mourning; its support is taken from you.
For the inhabitant of Maroth waited carefully for good: but evil came down from the LORD unto the gate of Jerusalem.
For the dwellers of Maroth pined
for good, but
calamity came down from the LORD, even to the gate of Jerusalem.
O thou inhabitant of
Lachish, bind the
chariot to the swift beast: she is the beginning of the sin to the daughter of
Zion:
for the transgressions of Israel were found in thee.
Harness your
chariot horses, O dweller of
Lachish. You were the beginning of sin to the Daughter of
Zion,
for the transgressions of Israel were found in you.
Make thee
bald, and
poll thee
for thy delicate children;
enlarge thy
baldness as the eagle;
for they are gone into captivity from thee.
Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, against this family do I
devise an evil, from which ye shall not remove your necks; neither shall ye go
haughtily:
for this time is evil.
Therefore this is what the LORD says: “I am
planning against this nation a
disaster from which you cannot free your necks. Then you will not walk so proudly,
for it will be a time of
calamity.
The women of my people have ye cast out from their pleasant houses; from their children have ye taken away my glory for ever.
You drive the women of My people from their pleasant homes. You take away My blessing from their children
forever.
Arise ye, and depart;
for this is not your rest: because it is
polluted, it shall destroy you, even with a
sore destruction.
Arise and depart,
for this is not your place of rest, because its
defilement brings destruction— a
grievous destruction!
If a man walking in the spirit and
falsehood do lie, saying, I will
prophesy unto thee of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.
If a man of wind were to come and say falsely, “I will
preach to you of wine and strong drink,” he would be just the preacher
for this people!
And I said, Hear, I pray you, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel; Is it not for you to know judgment?
Then I said: “Hear now, O leaders of Jacob, you rulers of the house of Israel. Should you not know justice?
Who also eat the flesh of my people, and
flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and
chop them in pieces, as
for the pot, and as flesh within the
caldron.
You eat the flesh of my people after
stripping off their skin and breaking their bones. You
chop them up like flesh
for the
cooking pot, like meat in a cauldron.”
Thus saith the LORD concerning the prophets that make my people
err, that
bite with their teeth, and cry, Peace; and he that putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him.
This is what the LORD says: “As
for the prophets who lead My people
astray, who
proclaim peace while they
chew with their teeth, but declare war against one who puts nothing in their mouths:
Then shall the seers be
ashamed, and the diviners confounded:
yea, they shall all cover their lips;
for there is no answer of God.
Then the seers will be
ashamed and the diviners will be disgraced. They will all cover their mouths because there is no answer from God.”
But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD, and of judgment, and of might, to declare unto Jacob his
transgression, and to Israel his sin.
As
for me, however, I am filled with power by the Spirit of the LORD, with justice and courage, to declare to Jacob his
transgression and to Israel his sin.
The heads thereof judge
for reward, and the priests thereof teach
for hire, and the prophets thereof divine
for money: yet will they
lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us.
Her leaders judge
for a
bribe, her priests teach
for a price, and her prophets practice
divination for money. Yet they
lean upon the LORD, saying, “Is not the LORD among us? No
disaster can come upon us.”
Therefore shall
Zion for your sake be
plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the
forest.
Therefore, because of you,
Zion will be
plowed like a field, Jerusalem will become a
heap of
rubble, and the temple mount a wooded ridge.
And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths:
for the law shall go
forth of
Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And many nations will come and say: “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob. He will teach us His ways, so that we may walk in His paths.”
For the law will go
forth from
Zion and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
And he shall judge among many people, and
rebuke strong nations
afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
Then He will judge between many peoples and
arbitrate for strong nations far and wide. Then they will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into
pruning hooks. Nation will no longer take up the sword against nation, nor will they train anymore
for war.
But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it.
And each man will sit under his own vine and under his own fig tree, with no one to
frighten him.
For the mouth of the LORD of Hosts has spoken.
For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever.
Though each of the peoples may walk in the name of his god, yet we will walk in the name of the LORD our God
forever and ever.
And I will make her that
halted a
remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the LORD shall reign over them in mount
Zion from henceforth, even
for ever.
And I will make the
lame into a
remnant, and the outcast into a strong nation. Then the LORD will rule over them in Mount
Zion from that day and
forever.
And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of
Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.
And you, O
watchtower of the flock, O
stronghold of the Daughter of
Zion— the
former dominion will be restored to you; sovereignty will come to the Daughter of Jerusalem.”
Now why
dost thou cry out
aloud? is there no king in thee? is thy counsellor perished?
for pangs have taken thee as a woman in
travail.
Why do you now cry
aloud? Is there no king among you? Has your
counselor perished so that
anguish grips you like a woman in labor?
Be in pain, and labour to bring
forth, O daughter of
Zion, like a woman in
travail:
for now shalt thou go
forth out of the city, and thou shalt dwell in the field, and thou shalt go even to Babylon; there shalt thou be delivered; there the LORD shall
redeem thee from the hand of thine enemies.
Writhe in
agony, O Daughter of
Zion, like a woman in labor.
For now you will leave the city and camp in the open fields. You will go to Babylon; there you will be
rescued; there the LORD will
redeem you from the hand of your enemies!
But they know not the thoughts of the LORD, neither understand they his counsel:
for he shall gather them as the
sheaves into the floor.
But they do not know the thoughts of the LORD or understand His plan,
for He has gathered them like
sheaves to the
threshing floor.
Arise and
thresh, O daughter of
Zion:
for I will make thine horn iron, and I will make thy
hoofs brass: and thou shalt beat in pieces many people: and I will
consecrate their gain unto the LORD, and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth.
Rise and
thresh, O Daughter of
Zion,
for I will give you horns of iron and
hooves of bronze to break to pieces many peoples. Then you will
devote their gain to the LORD, their wealth to the Lord of all the earth.
Now gather
thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall
smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the
cheek.
Now, O daughter of troops,
mobilize your troops;
for a siege is laid against us! With a rod they will strike the
cheek of the judge of Israel.
But thou,
Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come
forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings
forth have been from of old, from
everlasting.
But you,
Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come
forth for Me One to be ruler over Israel— One whose origins are of old, from the days of
eternity.
Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought
forth: then the
remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel.
Therefore Israel will be abandoned until she who is in labor has given birth; then the rest of His brothers will return to the children of Israel.
And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God; and they shall
abide:
for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.
He will stand and
shepherd His flock in the strength of the LORD, in the
majestic name of the LORD His God. And they will dwell securely,
for then His greatness will extend to the ends of the earth.
And the
remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many people as a
dew from the LORD, as the showers upon the grass, that tarrieth not
for man, nor waiteth
for the sons of men.
Then the
remnant of Jacob will be in the midst of many peoples like
dew from the LORD, like showers on the grass, which do not wait
for man or
linger for mankind.
And the
remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the
forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep: who, if he go through, both treadeth down, and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver.
Then the
remnant of Jacob will be among the nations, in the midst of many peoples, like a lion among the beasts of the
forest, like a young lion among flocks of sheep, which tramples and tears as it passes through, with no one to
rescue them.
And I will cut off witchcrafts out of thine hand; and thou shalt have no more soothsayers:
I will cut the
sorceries from your hand, and you will have no
fortune-tellers.
Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD’S controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth:
for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will
plead with Israel.
Hear, O mountains, the LORD’s
indictment, you
enduring foundations of the earth.
For the LORD has a case against His people, and He will
argue it against Israel:
For I brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and I sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and
Miriam.
For I brought you up from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery. I sent Moses before you, as well as Aaron and
Miriam.
Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my
firstborn for my
transgression, the fruit of my body
for the sin of my soul?
Would the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I present my
firstborn for my
transgression, the fruit of my body
for the sin of my soul?
Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the
scant measure that is
abominable?
Can I
forget any longer, O house of the wicked, the treasures of wickedness and the short
ephah, which is
accursed?
For the rich men thereof are full of violence, and the inhabitants thereof have spoken lies, and their tongue is
deceitful in their mouth.
For the wealthy of the city are full of violence, and its residents speak lies; their tongues are
deceitful in their mouths.
For the statutes of Omri are kept, and all the works of the house of
Ahab, and ye walk in their counsels; that I should make thee a
desolation, and the inhabitants thereof an
hissing: therefore ye shall bear the reproach of my people.
You have kept the statutes of Omri and all the practices of
Ahab’s house; you have followed their counsel. Therefore I will make you a
desolation, and your inhabitants an object of contempt; you will bear the
scorn of the nations.”
Woe is me!
for I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grapegleanings of the
vintage: there is no
cluster to eat: my soul desired the firstripe fruit.
The good man is perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait
for blood; they
hunt every man his brother with a net.
The godly man has perished from the earth; there is no one upright among men. They all lie in wait
for blood; they
hunt one another with a net.
That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asketh, and the judge asketh
for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth his
mischievous desire: so they
wrap it up.
Both hands are skilled at evil; the prince and the judge demand a
bribe. When the powerful utters his evil desire, they all
conspire together.
The best of them is like a
brier; the most upright is sharper than a
hedge of thorns. The day
for your
watchmen has come, the day of your
visitation. Now is the time of their confusion.
For the son dishonoureth the father, the daughter riseth up against her mother, the daughter in law against her mother in law; a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.
For a son dishonors his father, a daughter rises against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man’s enemies are the members of his own household.
Therefore I will look unto the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation: my God will hear me.
But as for me, I will look to the LORD; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me.
I will bear the
indignation of the LORD, because I have
sinned against him, until he
plead my cause, and
execute judgment
for me: he will bring me
forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness.
Because I have
sinned against Him, I must
endure the
rage of the LORD, until He argues my case and executes justice
for me. He will bring me into the light; I will see His righteousness.
In the day that thy walls are to be built, in that day shall the decree be far removed.
The day for rebuilding your walls will come— the day for extending your boundary.
In that day also he shall come even to thee from Assyria, and from the fortified cities, and from the fortress even to the river, and from sea to sea, and from mountain to mountain.
On that day they will come to you from Assyria and the cities of Egypt, even from Egypt to the Euphrates, from sea to sea and mountain to mountain.
Notwithstanding the land shall be
desolate because of them that dwell therein,
for the fruit of their doings.
Then the earth will become
desolate because of its inhabitants, as the fruit of their deeds.
Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the
transgression of the
remnant of his
heritage? he retaineth not his anger
for ever, because he delighteth in mercy.
Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the
transgression of the
remnant of His inheritance— who does not retain His anger
forever, because He delights in loving devotion?
The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.
The LORD is good, a
stronghold in the day of distress; He cares
for those who trust in Him.
For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are
drunken as drunkards, they shall be
devoured as
stubble fully dry.
There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the LORD, a wicked counsellor.
For now will I break his yoke from off thee, and will
burst thy bonds in

graven image and the
molten image: I will make thy grave;

vile.
The LORD has issued a command concerning you, O
Nineveh: “There will be no descendants to carry on your name. I will cut off the carved image and cast
idol from the house of your gods; I will prepare your grave,
for you are contemptible.”
