Then
Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what have I
offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.
Then
Abimelech called Abraham and asked, “What have you done to us? How have I
sinned against you, that you have brought such
tremendous guilt upon me and my kingdom? You have done things to me that should not be done.”
And
Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have
lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought
guiltiness upon us.
“What is this you have done to us?” asked
Abimelech. “One of the people could easily have
slept with your wife, and you would have brought
guilt upon us.”
And they said one to another, We are
verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the
anguish of his soul, when he
besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.
Then they said to one another, “Surely we are being punished because of our brother. We saw his
anguish when he
pleaded with us, but we would not
listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.”
I will be
surety for him; of my hand shalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and set him before thee, then let me bear the
blame for ever:
I will
guarantee his safety. You may hold me personally responsible. If I do not bring him back and set him before you, then may I bear the
guilt before you all my life.
For thy servant became
surety for the
lad unto my father, saying, If I bring him not unto thee, then I shall bear the
blame to my father for ever.
Indeed, your servant
guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father, saying, ‘If I do not return him to you, I will bear the
guilt before you, my father, all my life.’
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave
anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.
If a
thief be found breaking up, and be
smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.
If a
thief is caught breaking in and is beaten to death, no one shall be
guilty of
bloodshed.
If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full
restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his
theft.
For all manner of
trespass, whether it be for ox, for
ass, for sheep, for
raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall
condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour.
In all cases of
illegal possession of an ox, a
donkey, a sheep, a garment, or any lost
item that someone claims, ‘This is mine,’ both parties shall bring their cases before the judges. The one whom the judges find
guilty must pay back double to his
neighbor.
Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous
slay thou not: for I will not
justify the wicked.
Stay far away from a false
accusation. Do not kill the innocent or the just, for I will not
acquit the
guilty.
And they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they come in unto the tabernacle of the congregation, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place; that they bear not iniquity, and die: it shall be a statute for ever unto him and his seed after him.
Aaron and his sons must wear them whenever they enter the Tent of Meeting or approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they will not
incur guilt and die. This is to be a permanent statute for Aaron and his descendants.
Keeping mercy for thousands,
forgiving iniquity and
transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the
guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
maintaining loving devotion to a thousand generations,
forgiving iniquity,
transgression, and sin. Yet He will by no means leave the
guilty unpunished; He will visit the iniquity of the fathers on their children and grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”
If the priest that is
anointed do sin according to the sin of the people; then let him bring for his sin, which he hath
sinned, a young
bullock without
blemish unto the LORD for a sin offering.
If the
anointed priest sins, bringing
guilt on the people, he must bring to the LORD a young bull without
blemish as a sin offering for the sin he has committed.
And if the whole congregation of Israel sin through ignorance, and the thing be
hid from the eyes of the assembly, and they have done somewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which should not be done, and are
guilty;
Now if the whole congregation of Israel strays
unintentionally and the matter escapes the notice of the assembly so that they
violate any of the LORD’s commandments and
incur guilt by doing what is forbidden,
When a ruler hath
sinned, and done somewhat through ignorance against any of the commandments of the LORD his God concerning things which should not be done, and is
guilty;
When a leader sins
unintentionally and does what is prohibited by any of the commandments of the LORD his God, he incurs
guilt.
And if any one of the common people sin through ignorance, while he doeth somewhat against any of the commandments of the LORD concerning things which ought not to be done, and be guilty;
And if one of the common people sins
unintentionally and does what is prohibited by any of the LORD’s commandments, he incurs
guilt.
Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a
carcase of an unclean beast, or a
carcase of unclean cattle, or the
carcase of unclean
creeping things, and if it be hidden from him; he also shall be unclean, and
guilty.
Or if a person touches anything unclean—whether the
carcass of any unclean wild animal or
livestock or
crawling creature—even if he is unaware of it, he is unclean and
guilty.
Or if he touch the uncleanness of man,
whatsoever uncleanness it be that a man shall be
defiled withal, and it be
hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be
guilty.
Or if he touches human uncleanness—anything by which one becomes unclean—even if he is unaware of it, when he realizes it, he is guilty.
Or if a soul
swear,
pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good,
whatsoever it be that a man shall
pronounce with an oath, and it be
hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be
guilty in one of these.
Or if someone swears
thoughtlessly with his lips to do anything good or evil—in whatever matter a man may
rashly pronounce an oath—even if he is unaware of it, when he realizes it, he is
guilty in the matter.
And it shall be, when he shall be
guilty in one of these things, that he shall
confess that he hath
sinned in that thing:
If someone incurs
guilt in one of these ways, he must
confess the sin he has committed,
And he shall bring his
trespass offering unto the LORD for his sin which he hath
sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a
kid of the goats, for a sin offering; and the priest shall make an
atonement for him concerning his sin.
and he must bring his
guilt offering to the LORD for the sin he has committed: a female lamb or goat from the flock as a sin offering. And the priest will make
atonement for him concerning his sin.
If a soul commit a
trespass, and sin through ignorance, in the holy things of the LORD; then he shall bring for his
trespass unto the LORD a ram without
blemish out of the flocks, with thy
estimation by shekels of silver, after the
shekel of the sanctuary, for a
trespass offering:
“If someone acts unfaithfully and sins
unintentionally against any of the LORD’s holy things, he must bring his
guilt offering to the LORD: an
unblemished ram from the flock, of proper value in silver shekels according to the sanctuary
shekel; it is a
guilt offering.
And he shall make
amends for the
harm that he hath done in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part
thereto, and give it unto the priest: and the priest shall make an
atonement for him with the ram of the
trespass offering, and it shall be
forgiven him.
Regarding any holy thing he has
harmed, he must make
restitution by adding a fifth of its value to it and giving it to the priest, who will make
atonement on his behalf with the ram as a
guilt offering, and he will be
forgiven.
And if a soul sin, and commit any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the LORD; though he
wist it not, yet is he
guilty, and shall bear his iniquity.
If someone sins and
violates any of the LORD’s commandments even though he was unaware, he is
guilty and shall bear his punishment.
And he shall bring a ram without
blemish out of the flock, with thy
estimation, for a
trespass offering, unto the priest: and the priest shall make an
atonement for him concerning his ignorance wherein he
erred and
wist it not, and it shall be
forgiven him.
He is to bring to the priest an
unblemished ram of proper value from the flock as a
guilt offering. Then the priest will make
atonement on his behalf for the wrong he has committed in ignorance, and he will be
forgiven.
It is a guilt offering; he was certainly guilty before the LORD.”
Then it shall be, because he hath
sinned, and is
guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath
deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found,
once he has
sinned and becomes
guilty, he must return what he has
stolen or taken by
extortion, or the deposit entrusted to him, or the lost property he found,
Or all that about which he hath
sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more
thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his
trespass offering.
or anything else about which he has
sworn falsely. He must make
restitution in full, add a fifth of the value, and pay it to the owner on the day he acknowledges his
guilt.
Then he must bring to the priest his
guilt offering to the LORD: an
unblemished ram of proper value from the flock.
And the priest shall make an
atonement for him before the LORD: and it shall be
forgiven him for any thing of all that he hath done in
trespassing therein.
In this way the priest will make
atonement for him before the LORD, and he will be
forgiven for anything he may have done to
incur guilt.”
It shall not be
baken with
leaven. I have given it unto them for their portion of my offerings made by fire; it is most holy, as is the sin offering, and as the
trespass offering.
It must not be
baked with
leaven; I have assigned it as their portion of My offerings made by fire. It is most holy, like the sin offering and the
guilt offering.
Likewise this is the law of the
trespass offering: it is most holy.
“Now this is the law of the guilt offering, which is most holy:
In the place where they kill the burnt offering shall they kill the
trespass offering: and the blood thereof shall he
sprinkle round about upon the altar.
The
guilt offering must be slaughtered in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered, and the priest shall
sprinkle its blood on all sides of the altar.
And the priest shall burn them upon the altar for an offering made by fire unto the LORD: it is a
trespass offering.
The priest shall burn them on the altar as an offering made by fire to the LORD; it is a guilt offering.
As the sin offering is, so is the
trespass offering: there is one law for them: the priest that maketh
atonement therewith shall have it.
The
guilt offering is like the sin offering; the same law applies to both. It belongs to the priest who makes
atonement with it.
This is the law of the burnt offering, of the meat offering, and of the sin offering, and of the
trespass offering, and of the consecrations, and of the sacrifice of the peace offerings;
This is the law of the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering, the
guilt offering, the
ordination offering, and the peace offering,
Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin offering in the holy place, seeing it is most holy, and God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make
atonement for them before the LORD?
“Why didn’t you eat the sin offering in the holy place? For it is most holy; it was given to you to take away the
guilt of the congregation by making
atonement for them before the LORD.
And the priest shall take one he lamb, and offer him for a
trespass offering, and the log of oil, and wave them for a wave offering before the LORD:
Then the priest is to take one of the male lambs and present it as a guilt offering, along with the log of olive oil; and he must wave them as a wave offering before the LORD.
And he shall
slay the lamb in the place where he shall kill the sin offering and the burnt offering, in the holy place: for as the sin offering is the priest’s, so is the
trespass offering: it is most holy:
Then he is to slaughter the lamb in the sanctuary area where the sin offering and burnt offering are slaughtered. Like the sin offering, the guilt offering belongs to the priest; it is most holy.
And the priest shall take some of the blood of the
trespass offering, and the priest shall put it upon the
tip of the right ear of him that is to be
cleansed, and upon the
thumb of his right hand, and upon the great
toe of his right foot:
The priest is to take some of the blood from the
guilt offering and put it on the right earlobe of the one to be
cleansed, on the
thumb of his right hand, and on the
big toe of his right foot.
And of the rest of the oil that is in his hand shall the priest put upon the
tip of the right ear of him that is to be
cleansed, and upon the
thumb of his right hand, and upon the great
toe of his right foot, upon the blood of the
trespass offering:
And the priest is to put some of the oil remaining in his palm on the right earlobe of the one to be
cleansed, on the
thumb of his right hand, and on the
big toe of his right foot, on top of the blood of the
guilt offering.
And if he be poor, and cannot get so much; then he shall take one lamb for a
trespass offering to be waved, to make an
atonement for him, and one tenth deal of fine flour mingled with oil for a meat offering, and a log of oil;
If, however, the person is poor and cannot afford these offerings, he is to take one male lamb as a
guilt offering to be waved to make
atonement for him, along with a tenth of an
ephah of fine flour mixed with olive oil for a grain offering, a log of olive oil,
And the priest shall take the lamb of the
trespass offering, and the log of oil, and the priest shall wave them for a wave offering before the LORD:
The priest shall take the lamb for the guilt offering, along with the log of olive oil, and wave them as a wave offering before the LORD.
And he shall kill the lamb of the
trespass offering, and the priest shall take some of the blood of the
trespass offering, and put it upon the
tip of the right ear of him that is to be
cleansed, and upon the
thumb of his right hand, and upon the great
toe of his right foot:
And after he slaughters the lamb for the
guilt offering, the priest is to take some of the blood of the
guilt offering and put it on the right earlobe of the one to be
cleansed, on the
thumb of his right hand, and on the
big toe of his right foot.
And the priest shall put of the oil that is in his hand upon the
tip of the right ear of him that is to be
cleansed, and upon the
thumb of his right hand, and upon the great
toe of his right foot, upon the place of the blood of the
trespass offering:
The priest shall also put some of the oil in his palm on the right earlobe of the one to be
cleansed, on the
thumb of his right hand, and on the
big toe of his right foot—on the same places as the blood of the
guilt offering.
Thou shalt not
hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise
rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.
You must not
harbor hatred against your brother in your heart. Directly
rebuke your
neighbor, so that you will not
incur guilt on account of him.
And he shall bring his
trespass offering unto the LORD, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, even a ram for a
trespass offering.
The man, however, must bring a ram to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting as his guilt offering to the LORD.
And the priest shall make an
atonement for him with the ram of the
trespass offering before the LORD for his sin which he hath done: and the sin which he hath done shall be
forgiven him.
The priest shall make
atonement on his behalf before the LORD with the ram of the
guilt offering for the sin he has committed, and he will be
forgiven the sin he has committed.
They shall therefore keep mine
ordinance, lest they bear sin for it, and die therefore, if they
profane it: I the LORD do
sanctify them.
The priests must keep My charge, lest they bear the
guilt and die because they
profane it. I am the LORD who sanctifies them.
Or suffer them to bear the iniquity of
trespass, when they eat their holy things: for I the LORD do
sanctify them.
by allowing the people to eat the sacred offerings and thus to bear the punishment for guilt. For I am the LORD who sanctifies them.”
Speak unto the children of Israel, When a man or woman shall commit any sin that men commit, to do a
trespass against the LORD, and that person be
guilty;
“Tell the Israelites that when a man or woman acts unfaithfully against the LORD by
committing any sin against another, that person is
guilty Then shall the man be guiltless from iniquity, and this woman shall bear her iniquity.
The husband will be free from guilt, but the woman shall bear her iniquity.”
And he shall
consecrate unto the LORD the days of his separation, and shall bring a lamb of the first year for a
trespass offering: but the days that were before shall be lost, because his separation was
defiled.
He must rededicate his time of separation to the LORD and bring a year-old male lamb as a
guilt offering. But the preceding days shall not be counted, because his separation was
defiled.
The LORD is
longsuffering, and of great mercy,
forgiving iniquity and
transgression, and by no means clearing the
guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
‘The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in loving devotion,
forgiving iniquity and
transgression. Yet He will by no means leave the
guilty unpunished; He will visit the iniquity of the fathers upon their children to the third and fourth generation.’
After the number of the days in which ye searched the land, even forty days, each day for a year, shall ye bear your
iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know my breach of promise.
In keeping with the forty days you
spied out the land, you shall bear your
guilt forty years—a year for each day—and you will experience My
alienation.
Because he hath
despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken his commandment, that soul shall utterly be cut off; his iniquity shall be upon him.
He shall certainly be cut off, because he has
despised the word of the LORD and broken His commandment; his
guilt remains on him.”
This shall be thine of the most holy things, reserved from the fire: every
oblation of theirs, every meat offering of theirs, and every sin offering of theirs, and every
trespass offering of theirs, which they shall render unto me, shall be most holy for thee and for thy sons.
A portion of the most holy offerings reserved from the fire will be yours. From all the offerings they render to Me as most holy offerings, whether grain offerings or sin offerings or guilt offerings, that part belongs to you and your sons.
Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come
nigh the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear sin, and die.
No longer may the Israelites come near to the Tent of Meeting, or they will
incur guilt and die.
And ye shall bear no sin by reason of it, when ye have
heaved from it the best of it: neither shall ye
pollute the holy things of the children of Israel, lest ye die.
Once you have presented the best part of it, you will not
incur guilt because of it. But you must not
defile the sacred offerings of the Israelites, or else you will die.’”
And the land be subdued before the LORD: then afterward ye shall return, and be guiltless before the LORD, and before Israel; and this land shall be your possession before the LORD.
then when the land is subdued before the LORD, you may return and be free of obligation to the LORD and to Israel. And this land will belong to you as a possession before the LORD.
And the
revenger of blood find him without the borders of the city of his refuge, and the
revenger of blood kill the
slayer; he shall not be
guilty of blood:
and the
avenger of blood finds him outside of his city of refuge and kills him, then the
avenger will not be
guilty of
bloodshed Moreover ye shall take no satisfaction for the life of a murderer, which is guilty of death: but he shall be surely put to death.
You are not to accept a
ransom for the life of a murderer who deserves to die; he must surely be put to death.
Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave
anyone unpunished who takes His name in vain.
Beware that there be not a thought in thy wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou givest him
nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee.
Be careful not to
harbor this wicked thought in your heart: “The seventh year, the year of release, is near,” so that you look upon your poor brother begrudgingly and give him nothing. He will cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be
guilty of sin.
That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.
Thus innocent blood will not be shed in the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, so that you will not be
guilty of
bloodshed.
Thine eye shall not
pity him, but thou shalt put away the
guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.
You must show him no
pity. You are to
purge from Israel the
guilt of
shedding innocent blood, that it may go well with you.
So shalt thou put away the guilt of innocent blood from among you, when thou shalt do that which is right in the sight of the LORD.
So you shall
purge from among you the
guilt of
shedding innocent blood, since you have done what is right in the eyes of the LORD.
When thou shalt
vow a
vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not
slack to pay it: for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it would be sin in thee.
If you make a
vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow to keep it, because He will surely require it of you, and you will be
guilty of sin.
But if thou shalt
forbear to
vow, it shall be no sin in thee.
But if you
refrain from making a
vow, you will not be
guilty of sin.
At his day thou shalt give him his
hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.
You are to pay his wages each day before
sunset, because he is poor and depends on them. Otherwise he may cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be
guilty of sin.
If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall
justify the righteous, and
condemn the wicked.
If there is a dispute between men, they are to go to court to be judged, so that the innocent may be
acquitted and the
guilty condemned.
And it shall be, if the wicked man be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number.
If the
guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall have him lie down and be
flogged in his presence with the number of lashes his crime warrants.
And it shall be, that
whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be
guiltless: and
whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.
If
anyone goes out the door of your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head, and we will be innocent. But if a hand is laid on
anyone with you in the house, his blood will be on our heads.
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to
complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be
guilty.
When their fathers or brothers come to us to
complain, we will tell them, ‘Do us a favor by helping them, since we did not get wives for each of them in the war. Since you did not actually give them your daughters, you have no
guilt.’”
And they said, If ye send away the ark of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise return him a
trespass offering: then ye shall be
healed, and it shall be known to you why his hand is not removed from you.
They replied, “If you return the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away empty, but by all means return it to Him with a
guilt offering. Then you will be
healed, and you will understand why His hand has not been lifted from you.”
Then said they, What shall be the
trespass offering which we shall return to him? They answered, Five golden
emerods, and five golden
mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, and on your lords.
“What guilt offering should we send back to Him?” asked the Philistines. “Five gold tumors and five gold rats,” they said, “according to the number of rulers of the Philistines, since the same plague has struck both you and your rulers.
And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the
cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a
trespass offering, in a
coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.
Take the ark of the LORD, set it on the
cart, and in a chest beside it put the gold objects you are sending Him as a
guilt offering. Then send the ark on its way,
As a
guilt offering to the LORD, the Philistines had sent back one gold
tumor for each city:
Ashdod,
Gaza, Ashkelon,
Gath, and
Ekron.
That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath
avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine
handmaid.
then my lord will have no
remorse or
guilt of conscience over needless
bloodshed and
revenge. And when the LORD has dealt well with my lord, may you remember your
maidservant.”
And David said to
Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD’S
anointed, and be
guiltless?
But David said to
Abishai, “Do not destroy him, for who can lift a hand against the LORD’s
anointed and be
guiltless?”
And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are
guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of
Abner the son of
Ner:
Afterward, David heard about this and said, “I and my kingdom are
forever guiltless before the LORD concerning the blood of
Abner son of
Ner.
And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king, My lord, O king, the iniquity be on me, and on my father’s house: and the king and his throne be guiltless.
But the woman of Tekoa said to the king, “My lord the king, may any
blame be on me and on my father’s house, and may the king and his throne be
guiltless.”
And said unto the king, Let not my lord
impute iniquity unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant did
perversely the day that my lord the king went out of Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart.
and said, “My lord, do not hold me
guilty, and do not remember your servant’s
wrongdoing on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. May the king not take it to heart.
Now therefore hold him not
guiltless: for thou art a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his
hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.
Now therefore, do not hold him
guiltless, for you are a wise man. You know what you ought to do to him to bring his gray head down to
Sheol in blood.”
The
trespass money and sin money was not brought into the house of the LORD: it was the priests’.
The money from the guilt offerings and sin offerings was not brought into the house of the LORD; it belonged to the priests.
And
Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord’s servants? why then
doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of
trespass to Israel?
But
Joab replied, “May the LORD multiply His troops a hundred times over. My lord the king, are they not all servants of my lord? Why does my lord want to do this? Why should he bring
guilt on Israel?”
And what cause
soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even
warn them that they
trespass not against the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not
trespass.
For every dispute that comes before you from your brothers who dwell in their cities—whether it regards
bloodshed or some other
violation of law, commandments, statutes, or ordinances—you are to
warn them, so that they will not
incur guilt before the LORD and wrath will not come upon you and your brothers. Do this, and you will not
incur guilt.
And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers, and served groves and idols: and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their
trespass.
They abandoned the house of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and served the Asherah poles and idols. So wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs.
And now ye purpose to keep under the children of Judah and Jerusalem for
bondmen and
bondwomen unto you: but are there not with you, even with you, sins against the LORD your God?
And now you intend to reduce to slavery the men and women of Judah and Jerusalem. But are you not also guilty before the LORD your God?
And said unto them, Ye shall not bring in the
captives hither: for whereas we have
offended against the LORD already, ye intend to add more to our sins and to our
trespass: for our
trespass is great, and there is fierce wrath against Israel.
“You must not bring the
captives here,” they said, “for you are
proposing to bring
guilt upon us from the LORD and to add to our sins and our
guilt. For our
guilt is great, and fierce anger is upon Israel.”
And humbled not himself before the LORD, as
Manasseh his father had humbled himself; but Amon
trespassed more and more.
but he did not humble himself before the LORD as his father
Manasseh had done; instead, Amon increased his
guilt.
And said, O my God, I am
ashamed and
blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our
iniquities are increased over our head, and our
trespass is grown up unto the heavens.
and said: “O my God, I am
ashamed and
embarrassed to lift up my face to You, my God, because our
iniquities are higher than our heads, and our
guilt has reached the heavens.
Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great
trespass unto this day; and for our
iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a
spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
From the days of our fathers to this day, our
guilt has been great. Because of our
iniquities, we and our kings and priests have been delivered into the hands of the kings of the earth and put to the sword and captivity, to
pillage and
humiliation, as we are this day.
And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great
trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our
iniquities deserve, and hast given us such
deliverance as this;
After all that has come upon us because of our evil deeds and our great
guilt (though You, our God, have punished us less than our
iniquities deserve and have given us such a
remnant as this),
O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.
O LORD, God of Israel, You are righteous! For we remain this day as a
remnant. Here we are before You in our
guilt, though because of it no one can stand before You.”
And
Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye have
transgressed, and have taken strange wives, to increase the
trespass of Israel.
Then
Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have been unfaithful by marrying foreign women, adding to the
guilt of Israel.
And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives; and being
guilty, they offered a ram of the flock for their
trespass.
Maaseiah,
Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah. They
pledged to send their wives away, and for their
guilt they presented a ram from the flock as a
guilt offering.
If I
justify myself, mine own mouth shall
condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me
perverse.
Even if I were righteous, my mouth would
condemn me; if I were
blameless, it would declare me
guilty.
If I be wicked, why then labour I in vain?
Since I am already found guilty, why should I labor in vain?
Thou knowest that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of thine hand.
though You know that I am not
guilty, and there is no
deliverance from Your hand?
