And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them
have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every
creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the
livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.”
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and
replenish the earth, and
subdue it: and
have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and
subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.”
And God said, Behold, I
have given you every
herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit contains seed. They will be yours for food.
And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I
have given every green
herb for meat: and it was so.
And to every beast of the earth and every bird of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth—everything that has the breath of life in it—I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.
And he said, Who told thee that thou
wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree,
whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
“Who told you that you were naked?” asked the LORD God. “Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?”
And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent
beguiled me, and I did eat.
Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you
have done?” “The serpent
deceived me,” she replied, “and I
ate.”
And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art
cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy
belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you
have done this,
cursed are you above all
livestock and every beast of the field! On your
belly will you go, and dust you will eat, all the days of your life.
And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast
hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it:
cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
And to Adam He said: “Because you
have listened to the voice of your wife and
have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat,
cursed is the ground because of you; through
toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.
And Adam knew
Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare
Cain, and said, I
have gotten a man from the LORD.
And Adam had relations with his wife
Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to
Cain. “With the help of the LORD I
have brought forth a man,” she said.
And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto me from the ground.
“What
have you done?” replied the LORD. “The voice of your brother’s blood
cries out to Me from the ground.
Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be
hid; and I shall be a
fugitive and a
vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall
slay me.
Behold, this day You
have driven me from the face of the earth, and from Your face I will be hidden; I will be a
fugitive and a
wanderer on the earth, and
whoever finds me will kill me.”
And Adah bare Jabal: he was the father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle.
Adah gave birth to Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and raise
livestock.
And
Lamech said unto his wives, Adah and
Zillah, Hear my voice; ye wives of
Lamech,
hearken unto my speech: for I
have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my
hurt.
Then
Lamech said to his wives: “Adah and
Zillah, hear my voice; wives of
Lamech,
listen to my speech. For I
have slain a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me.
And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I
have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the
creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I
have made them.
So the LORD said, “I will
blot out man, whom I
have created, from the face of the earth—every man and beast and
crawling creature and bird of the air—for I am
grieved that I
have made them.”
And the LORD said unto
Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee
have I seen righteous before me in this generation.
Then the LORD said to
Noah, “Go into the ark, you and all your family, because I
have found you righteous in this generation.
For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.
For seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will
wipe from the face of the earth every living thing I
have made.”
And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again
curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again
smite any more every thing living, as I
have done.
When the LORD smelled the pleasing
aroma, He said in His heart, “Never again will I
curse the ground because of man, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from his youth. And never again will I destroy all living creatures as I
have done.
Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green
herb have I given you all things.
Everything that lives and moves will be food for you; just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you all things.
I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a
token of a covenant between me and the earth.
I
have set My
rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.
And God said unto
Noah, This is the
token of the covenant, which I
have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.
So God said to
Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I
have established between Me and every creature on the earth.”
And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
And the LORD said, “If they
have begun to do this as one people speaking the same language, then nothing they
devise will be beyond them.
And Pharaoh called
Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why
didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?
So Pharaoh summoned
Abram and asked, “What
have you done to me? Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?
Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.
Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!”
And
Abram said to the king of
Sodom, I
have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the
possessor of heaven and earth,
But
Abram replied to the king of
Sodom, “I
have raised my hand to the LORD God Most High,
Creator of heaven and earth,
That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I
have made
Abram rich:
that I will not accept even a thread, or a
strap of a
sandal, or anything that belongs to you, lest you should say, ‘I
have made
Abram rich.’
Save only that which the young men
have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner,
Eshcol, and
Mamre; let them take their portion.
I will accept nothing but what my men
have eaten and the share for the men who went with me—Aner,
Eshcol, and
Mamre. They may take their portion.”
And
Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.
Abram continued, “Behold, You
have given me no offspring, so a servant in my household will be my heir.”
In the same day the LORD made a covenant with
Abram, saying, Unto thy seed
have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
On that day the LORD made a covenant with
Abram, saying, “To your descendants I
have given this land—from the river of Egypt to the great River Euphrates—
And Sarai said unto
Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I
have given my
maid into thy
bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was
despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.
Then Sarai said to
Abram, “May the wrong done to me be upon you! I delivered my servant into your arms, and ever since she saw that she was
pregnant, she has treated me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me.”
“
Hagar, servant of Sarai,” he said, “where
have you come from, and where are you going?” “I am running away from my
mistress Sarai,” she replied.
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name
Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy
affliction.
The angel of the LORD proceeded: “Behold, you
have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name him
Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of
affliction.
And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said,
Have I also here looked after him that
seeth me?
So
Hagar gave this name to the LORD who had spoken to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “Here I
have seen the One who sees me!”
Neither shall thy name any more be called
Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations
have I made thee.
No longer will you be called
Abram, but your name will be Abraham, for I
have made you a father of many nations.
And as for
Ishmael, I
have heard thee: Behold, I
have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he
beget, and I will make him a great nation.
As for
Ishmael, I
have heard you, and I will surely
bless him; I will make him fruitful and multiply him greatly. He will become the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.
And said, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
“My lord,” said Abraham, “if I have found favor in your sight, please do not pass your servant by.
And I will
fetch a
morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.
And I will bring a
bit of bread so that you may refresh
yourselves. This is why you
have passed your servant’s way. After that, you may continue on your way.” “
Yes,” they replied, “you may do as you
have said.”
And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo,
Sarah thy wife shall
have a son. And
Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him.
Then the LORD said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year, and your wife
Sarah will
have a son!” Now
Sarah was behind him,
listening at the entrance to the tent.
Therefore
Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I
have pleasure, my lord being old also?
So she
laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now
have this pleasure?”
Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and
Sarah shall
have a son.
Is anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you—in about a year—and
Sarah will
have a son.”
For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
For I have chosen him, so that he will command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, in order that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has promised.”
I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.
I will go down to see if their actions fully
justify the outcry that has reached Me. If not, I will find out.”
And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes:
Then Abraham answered, “Now that I
have ventured to speak to the Lord—though I am but dust and ashes—
And he said, Behold now, I
have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord:
Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty’s sake.
And Abraham said, “Now that I
have ventured to speak to the Lord, suppose twenty are found there?” He answered, “On account of the twenty, I will not destroy it.”
And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
They called out to Lot, saying, “Where are the men who came to you
tonight? Send them out to us so we can
have relations with them!”
Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
Look, I
have two daughters who
have never
slept with a man. Let me bring them to you, and you can do to them as you please. But do not do anything to these men, for they
have come under the protection of my roof.”
And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son in law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and
whatsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of this place:
Then the two men said to Lot, “Do you
have anyone else here—a son-in-law, your sons or daughters, or
anyone else in the city who belongs to you? Get them out of here,
Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast
magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:
Your servant has indeed found favor in your sight, and you
have shown me great kindness by
sparing my life. But I cannot run to the mountains; the
disaster will overtake me, and I will die.
And he said unto him, See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow this city, for the which thou hast spoken.
“Very well,” he answered, “I will grant this request as well, and will not
demolish the town you indicate.
But God came to
Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man, for the woman which thou hast taken; for she is a man’s wife.
One night, however, God came to
Abimelech in a dream and told him, “You are as good as dead because of the woman you
have taken, for she is a married woman.”
Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the
integrity of my heart and
innocency of my hands
have I done this.
Didn’t Abraham tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ I
have done this in the
integrity of my heart and the
innocence of my hands.”
And God said unto him in a dream,
Yea, I know that thou
didst this in the
integrity of thy heart; for I also
withheld thee from
sinning against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touch her.
Then God said to
Abimelech in the dream, “
Yes, I know that you did this with a clear conscience, and so I
have kept you from
sinning against Me. That is why I did not let you touch her.
Then
Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and what
have I
offended thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.
Then
Abimelech called Abraham and asked, “What
have you done to us? How
have I
sinned against you, that you
have brought such
tremendous guilt upon me and my kingdom? You
have done things to me that should not be done.”
And unto
Sarah he said, Behold, I
have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: behold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes, unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus she was reproved.
And he said to
Sarah, “See, I am giving your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is your
vindication before all who are with you; you are completely cleared.”
And she said, Who would
have said unto Abraham, that
Sarah should
have given children
suck? for I
have born him a son in his old age.
She added, “Who would
have told Abraham that
Sarah would
nurse children? Yet I
have borne him a son in his old age.”
Now therefore
swear unto me here by God that thou
wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son’s son: but according to the kindness that I
have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast
sojourned.
Now, therefore,
swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or descendants. Show to me and to the country in which you reside the same kindness that I
have shown to you.”
And
Abimelech said, I
wot not who hath done this thing: neither
didst thou tell me, neither yet heard I of it, but to day.
Abimelech replied, “I do not know who has done this. You did not tell me, so I
have not heard about it until
today.”
And
Abimelech said unto Abraham, What mean these seven
ewe lambs which thou hast set by themselves?
and
Abimelech asked him, “Why
have you set apart these seven
ewe lambs?”
And he said, For these seven
ewe lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that they may be a witness unto me, that I
have digged this well.
He replied, “You are to accept the seven
ewe lambs from my hand as my witness that I
dug this well.”
And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the
lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
“Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel, “for now I know that you fear God, since you
have not
withheld your only son from me.”
And said, By myself
have I
sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not
withheld thy son, thine only son:
saying, “By Myself I
have sworn, declares the LORD, that because you
have done this and
have not
withheld your only son,
And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.
And through your offspring all nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you.
to sell me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him sell it to me in your presence for full price, so that I may have a burial site.”
And I will make thee
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the
Canaanites, among whom I dwell:
and I will
have you
swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the
Canaanites among whom I am dwelling,
And let it come to pass, that the
damsel to whom I shall say, Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink; and she shall say, Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac; and thereby shall I know that thou hast shewed kindness unto my master.
Now may it happen that the
girl to whom I say, ‘Please let down your
jar that I may drink,’ and who responds, ‘Drink, and I will water your camels as well’—let her be the one You
have appointed for Your servant Isaac. By this I will know that You
have shown kindness to my master.”
And the servant ran to meet her, and said, Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.
So the servant ran to meet her and said, “Please let me
have a little water from your
jar.”
And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.
After she had given him a drink, she said, “I will also draw water for your camels, until they have had enough to drink.”
She said moreover unto him, We
have both straw and
provender enough, and room to
lodge in.
Then she added, “We
have plenty of straw and feed, as well as a place for you to
spend the night.”
And he said, Come in, thou blessed of the LORD; wherefore standest thou without? for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels.
“Come, you who are blessed by the LORD,” said
Laban. “Why are you standing out here? I
have prepared the house and a place for the camels.”
And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, I will not eat, until I
have told mine
errand. And he said, Speak on.
Then a meal was set before the man, but he said, “I will not eat until I
have told you what I came to say.” So
Laban said, “Please speak.”
And he said unto me, The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with thee, and
prosper thy way; and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, and of my father’s house:
And he told me, ‘The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send His angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you may take a wife for my son from my kindred and from my father’s house.
Then
Laban and
Bethuel answered and said, The thing proceedeth from the LORD: we cannot speak unto thee bad or good.
Laban and
Bethuel answered, “This is from the LORD; we
have no choice in the matter.
And
Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly
have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest
have brought
guiltiness upon us.
“What is this you
have done to us?” asked
Abimelech. “One of the people could easily
have slept with your wife, and you would
have brought guilt upon us.”
And Isaac said unto them, Wherefore come ye to me, seeing ye
hate me, and
have sent me away from you?
“Why
have you come to me?” Isaac asked them. “You
hated me and sent me away.”
That thou
wilt do us no
hurt, as we
have not touched thee, and as we
have done unto thee nothing but good, and
have sent thee away in peace: thou art now the blessed of the LORD.
that you will not
harm us, just as we
have not
harmed you but
have done only good to you, sending you on your way in peace. And now you are blessed by the LORD.”
And it came to pass the same day, that Isaac’s servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had
digged, and said unto him, We
have found water.
On that same day, Isaac’s servants came and told him about the well they had
dug. “We
have found water!” they told him.
And Jacob said unto his father, I am
Esau thy
firstborn; I
have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my
venison, that thy soul may
bless me.
Jacob said to his father, “I am
Esau, your
firstborn. I
have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may
bless me.”
And Isaac
trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken
venison, and brought it me, and I
have eaten of all before thou camest, and
have blessed him?
yea, and he shall be blessed.
Isaac began to
tremble violently and said, “Who was it, then, who
hunted the game and brought it to me? Before you came in, I
ate it all and blessed him—and indeed, he will be blessed!”
And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath
supplanted me these two times: he took away my
birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?
So
Esau declared, “Is he not rightly named Jacob? For he has
cheated me twice. He took my
birthright, and now he has taken my blessing.” Then he asked, “
Haven’t you saved a blessing for me?”
And Isaac answered and said unto
Esau, Behold, I
have made him thy lord, and all his brethren
have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine
have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?
But Isaac answered
Esau: “Look, I
have made him your master and given him all his relatives as servants; I
have sustained him with grain and new wine. What is left that I can do for you, my son?”
And
Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father?
bless me, even me also, O my father. And
Esau lifted up his voice, and
wept.
Esau said to his father, “Do you
have only one blessing, my father?
Bless me too, O my father!” Then
Esau wept aloud.
And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.
You shall live by the sword and serve your brother. But when you
rebel, you will
tear his yoke from your neck.”
Until thy brother’s anger turn away from thee, and he
forget that which thou hast done to him: then I will send, and
fetch thee from thence: why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?
until your brother’s
rage against you wanes and he forgets what you
have done to him. Then I will send for you and bring you back from there. Why should I lose both of you in one day?”
And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places
whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I
have done that which I
have spoken to thee of.
Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
And this stone, which I
have set for a
pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.
And this stone I
have set up as a
pillar will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give You a tenth.”
And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well’s mouth; then we water the sheep.
But they replied, “We cannot, until all the flocks have been gathered and the stone has been rolled away from the mouth of the well. Then we will water the sheep.”
And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to
Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for
Rachel? wherefore then hast thou
beguiled me?
When morning came, there was Leah! “What
have you done to me?” Jacob said to
Laban. “Wasn’t it for
Rachel that I served you? Why
have you
deceived me?”
And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi.
Once again Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she said, “Now at last my husband will become attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” So he was named Levi.
And she said, Behold my
maid Bilhah, go in unto her; and she shall bear upon my knees that I may also
have children by her.
Then she said, “Here is my
maidservant Bilhah. Sleep with her, that she may bear children for me, so that through her I too can build a family.”
And
Rachel said, With great wrestlings
have I
wrestled with my sister, and I
have prevailed: and she called his name
Naphtali.
And she said unto her, Is it a small matter that thou hast taken my husband? and wouldest thou take away my son’s mandrakes also? And
Rachel said, Therefore he shall lie with thee to night for thy son’s mandrakes.
But Leah replied, “Is it not enough that you
have taken away my husband? Now you want to take my son’s mandrakes as well?” “Very well,” said
Rachel, “he may sleep with you
tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”
And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said, Thou must come in unto me; for surely I
have hired thee with my son’s mandrakes. And he lay with her that night.
When Jacob came in from the field that evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must come with me, for I
have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he
slept with her that night.
And Leah said, God hath given me my
hire, because I
have given my
maiden to my husband: and she called his name
Issachar.
Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my
maidservant to my husband.” So she named him
Issachar.
And Leah said, God hath
endued me with a good
dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I
have born him six sons: and she called his name
Zebulun.
“God has given me a good gift,” she said. “This time my husband will honor me, because I
have borne him six sons.” And she named him
Zebulun.
Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have served thee, and let me go: for thou knowest my service which I have done thee.
Give me my wives and children for whom I have served you, that I may go on my way. You know how hard I have worked for you.”
And
Laban said unto him, I pray thee, if I
have found favour in thine eyes,
tarry: for I
have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake.
But
Laban replied, “If I
have found favor in your eyes, please stay. I
have learned by
divination that the LORD has blessed me because of you.”
And he said unto him, Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how thy cattle was with me.
Then Jacob answered, “You know how I
have served you and how your
livestock have thrived under my care.
So shall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it shall come for my
hire before thy face: every one that is not
speckled and
spotted among the goats, and brown among the sheep, that shall be counted
stolen with me.
So my
honesty will
testify for me when you come to check on my wages in the future. If I
have any goats that are not
speckled or
spotted, or any lambs that are not dark-colored, they will be considered
stolen.”
And
Laban said, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word.
“Agreed,” said
Laban. “Let it be as you
have said.”
And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.
You know that I have served your father with all my strength.
‘Look up,’ he said, ‘and see that all the males that are mating with the flock are
streaked,
spotted, or
speckled; for I
have seen all that
Laban has done to you.
