And if anything else is needed for the house of your God that you may have occasion to supply, you may pay for it from the royal treasury.
Also we
certify you, that touching any of the priests and Levites, singers,
porters,
Nethinims, or ministers of this house of God, it shall not be lawful to
impose toll, tribute, or custom, upon them.
And be
advised that you
have no authority to
impose tribute, duty, or
toll on any of the priests, Levites, singers, doorkeepers, temple servants, or other servants of this house of God.
Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites,
have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, doing according to their abominations, even of the
Canaanites, the
Hittites, the
Perizzites, the Jebusites, the
Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the
Amorites.
After these things had been accomplished, the leaders approached me and said, “The people of Israel, including the priests and Levites,
have not kept themselves separate from the surrounding peoples whose abominations are like those of the
Canaanites,
Hittites,
Perizzites, Jebusites,
Ammonites, Moabites, Egyptians, and
Amorites.
For they
have taken of their daughters for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed
have mingled themselves with the people of those lands:
yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this
trespass.
Indeed, the Israelites have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed has been mixed with the people of the land. And the leaders and officials have taken the lead in this unfaithfulness!”
Since the days of our fathers
have we been in a great
trespass unto this day; and for our
iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a
spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
From the days of our fathers to this day, our guilt has been great. Because of our
iniquities, we and our kings and priests
have been delivered into the hands of the kings of the earth and put to the sword and captivity, to
pillage and
humiliation, as we are this day.
And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we
have forsaken thy commandments,
And now, our God, what can we say after this? For we
have forsaken the commandments
Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the
filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which
have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.
that You gave through Your servants the prophets, saying: ‘The land that you are entering to possess is a land
polluted by the impurity of its peoples and the abominations with which they
have filled it from end to end.
And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great
trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our
iniquities deserve, and hast given us such
deliverance as this;
After all that has come upon us because of our evil deeds and our great guilt (though You, our God,
have punished us less than our
iniquities deserve and
have given us such a
remnant as this),
And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of
Elam, answered and said unto
Ezra, We
have trespassed against our God, and
have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing.
Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, an
Elamite, said to
Ezra: “We
have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the people of the land, yet in spite of this, there is hope for Israel.
And
Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, Ye
have transgressed, and
have taken strange wives, to increase the
trespass of Israel.
Then
Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You
have been unfaithful by marrying foreign women, adding to the guilt of Israel.
But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work of one day or two: for we are many that
have transgressed in this thing.
But there are many people here, and it is the
rainy season. We are not able to stay out in the open. Nor is this the work of one or two days, for we
have transgressed greatly in this matter.
Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath of our God for this matter be turned from us.
Let our leaders represent the whole assembly. Then let
everyone in our towns who has married a foreign woman come at an appointed time, together with the elders and judges of each town, until the fierce anger of our God in this matter is turned away from us.”
Let thine ear now be
attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and
confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we
have sinned against thee: both I and my father’s house
have sinned.
let Your eyes be open and Your ears
attentive to hear the prayer that I, Your servant, now pray before You day and night for Your servants, the Israelites. I
confess the sins that we Israelites
have committed against You. Both I and my father’s house
have sinned.
We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses.
We
have behaved corruptly against You and
have not kept the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that You gave Your servant Moses.
But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the
uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I
have chosen to set my name there.
but if you return to Me and keep and practice My commandments, then even if your exiles
have been banished to the
farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I
have chosen as a dwelling for My Name.’
And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be
sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’
sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire?
and replied to the king, “May the king live
forever! Why should I not be
sad when the city where my fathers are buried lies in ruins, and its gates
have been destroyed by fire?”
And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant
have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’
sepulchres, that I may build it.
and answered the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city where my fathers are buried, so that I may rebuild it.”
And a letter unto
Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which
appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
And may I
have a letter to
Asaph, keeper of the king’s forest, so that he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel to the temple, for the city wall, and for the house I will occupy.” And because the
gracious hand of my God was upon me, the king granted my requests.
Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.
Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned down. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”
Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will
prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye
have no portion, nor right, nor
memorial, in Jerusalem.
So I answered them and said, “The God of heaven is the One who will grant us success. We, His servants, will start rebuilding, but you have no portion, right, or claim in Jerusalem.”
And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be
blotted out from before thee: for they
have provoked thee to anger before the builders.
Do not cover up their iniquity or let their sin be
blotted out from Your sight, for they
have provoked the builders.
Some also there were that said, We
have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might
buy corn, because of the
dearth.
Others were saying, “We are
mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our homes to get grain during the famine.”
There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.
Still others were saying, “We have borrowed money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards.
Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into
bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto
bondage already: neither is it in our power to
redeem them; for other men
have our lands and vineyards.
We and our children are just like our countrymen and their children, yet we are subjecting our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters are already
enslaved, but we are powerless to
redeem them because our fields and vineyards belong to others.”
And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.
and said, “We
have done our best to
buy back our Jewish brothers who were sold to foreigners, but now you are selling your own brothers, that they may be sold back to us!” But they remained silent, for they could find nothing to say.
I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this
usury.
I, as well as my brothers and my servants,
have been
lending the people money and grain. Please, let us stop this
usury.
Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the
hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.
Please restore to them immediately their fields, vineyards, olive groves, and houses, along with the percentage of the money, grain, new wine, and oil that you
have been
assessing them.”
Also I
shook my
lap, and said, So God
shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he
shaken out, and
emptied. And all the congregation said,
Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.
I also
shook out the folds of my
robe and said, “May God likewise
shake out of His house and possession every man who does not keep this promise. May such a man be
shaken out and
have nothing!” The whole assembly said, “
Amen,” and they praised the LORD. And the people did as they had promised.
Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the
twentieth year even unto the two and
thirtieth year of
Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren
have not eaten the bread of the governor.
Furthermore, from the day King
Artaxerxes appointed me to be their governor in the land of Judah, from his
twentieth year until his thirty-second year (twelve years total), neither I nor my brothers
ate the food
allotted to the governor.
Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.
Remember me
favorably, O my God, for all that I
have done for this people.
And thou hast also appointed prophets to
preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
and you
have even appointed prophets in Jerusalem to
proclaim on your behalf: ‘There is a king in Judah.’ Soon these rumors will reach the ears of the king. So come, let us
confer together.”
Therefore was he
hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might
have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
He had been
hired to
intimidate me so that I would sin by doing as he suggested, so they could give me a bad name in order to discredit me.
My God, think thou upon
Tobiah and
Sanballat according to these their works, and on the
prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, that would
have put me in fear.
Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye
sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.
Then
Nehemiah told them, “Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send out portions to those who
have nothing prepared, since
today is holy to our Lord. Do not
grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the
Canaanites, the
Hittites, the
Amorites, and the
Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous:
You found his heart faithful before You, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the
Canaanites and
Hittites, of the
Amorites and
Perizzites, of the Jebusites and Girgashites— to give it to his descendants. You
have kept Your promise, because You are righteous.
Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we
have done wickedly:
You are just in all that has
befallen us, because You
have acted faithfully, while we
have acted wickedly.
Our kings and leaders and priests and fathers did not obey Your law or
listen to Your commandments and warnings that You gave them.
For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.
For even while they were in their kingdom, with the abundant goodness that You had given them, and in the
spacious and fertile land that You had set before them, they would not serve You or turn from their wicked ways.
And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.
Its abundant harvest goes to the kings You
have set over us because of our sins. And they rule over our bodies and our
livestock as they please. We are in great distress.
And we cast the lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, after the houses of our fathers, at times appointed year by year, to burn upon the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the law:
We
have cast lots among the priests, Levites, and people for the
donation of wood by our families at the appointed times each year. They are to bring it to the house of our God to burn on the altar of the LORD our God, as it is written in the Law.
And that we should bring the firstfruits of our
dough, and our offerings, and the fruit of all manner of trees, of wine and of oil, unto the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and the
tithes of our ground unto the Levites, that the same Levites might
have the
tithes in all the cities of our
tillage.
Moreover, we will bring to the priests at the storerooms of the house of our God the firstfruits of our
dough, of our grain offerings, of the fruit of all our trees, and of our new wine and oil. A tenth of our produce belongs to the Levites, so that they shall receive
tithes in all the towns where we labor.
Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and
wipe not out my good deeds that I
have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.
Remember me for this, O my God, and do not
blot out my deeds of loving devotion for the house of my God and for its services.
Remember them, O my God, because they
have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.
Remember them, O my God, because they
have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites.
Likewise shall the ladies of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king’s princes, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.
This very day the noble women of Persia and Media who have heard about the queen’s conduct will say the same thing to all the king’s officials, resulting in much contempt and wrath.
And he brought up Hadassah, that is,
Esther, his uncle’s daughter: for she had neither father nor mother, and the
maid was fair and beautiful; whom
Mordecai, when her father and mother were dead, took for his own daughter.
And
Mordecai had brought up Hadassah (that is,
Esther), the daughter of his uncle, because she did not
have a father or mother. The young woman was lovely in form and appearance, and when her father and mother had died,
Mordecai had taken her in as his own daughter.
If it please the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed: and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that
have the charge of the business, to bring it into the king’s
treasuries.
If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued to destroy them, and I will deposit ten thousand talents of silver into the royal treasury to pay those who carry it out.”
All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that
whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden
sceptre, that he may live: but I
have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
“All the royal officials and the people of the king’s provinces know that one law applies to every man or woman who approaches the king in the inner court without being summoned—that he be put to death. Only if the king extends the gold
scepter may that person live. But I
have not been summoned to appear before the king for the past thirty days.”
For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there
enlargement and
deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
For if you remain silent at this time, relief and
deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows if perhaps you
have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
And
Esther answered, If it seem good unto the king, let the king and
Haman come this day unto the
banquet that I
have prepared for him.
“If it pleases the king,”
Esther replied, “may the king and
Haman come
today to the
banquet I
have prepared for the king.”
If I
have found favour in the sight of the king, and if it please the king to grant my petition, and to perform my request, let the king and
Haman come to the
banquet that I shall prepare for them, and I will do to
morrow as the king hath said.
If I
have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and
fulfill my request, may the king and
Haman come
tomorrow to the
banquet I will prepare for them. Then I will answer the king’s question.”
His wife Zeresh and all his friends told him, “
Have them build a
gallows fifty cubits high, and ask the king in the morning to
have Mordecai hanged on it. Then go to the
banquet with the king and enjoy
yourself.” The advice pleased
Haman, and he had the
gallows constructed.
Let the royal
apparel be brought which the king useth to wear, and the horse that the king rideth upon, and the crown royal which is set upon his head:
have them bring a royal
robe that the king himself has worn and a horse on which the king himself has
ridden—one with a royal crest placed on its head.
Then the king said to
Haman, Make
haste, and take the
apparel and the horse, as thou hast said, and do even so to
Mordecai the
Jew, that sitteth at the king’s gate: let nothing fail of all that thou hast spoken.
“
Hurry,” said the king to
Haman, “and do just as you proposed. Take the
robe and the horse to
Mordecai the
Jew, who is sitting at the king’s gate. Do not neglect anything that you
have suggested.”
Then
Esther the queen answered and said, If I
have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request:
Queen
Esther replied, “If I
have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, grant me my life as my petition, and the lives of my people as my request.
For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for
bondmen and
bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not
countervail the king’s damage.
For my people and I
have been sold out to destruction, death, and
annihilation. If we had merely been sold as menservants and maidservants, I would
have remained silent, because no such distress would
justify burdening the king.”
And said, If it please the king, and if I
have found favour in his sight, and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised by
Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to destroy the Jews which are in all the king’s provinces:
“If it pleases the king,” she said, “and if I
have found favor in his sight, and the matter seems proper to the king, and I am pleasing in his sight, may an order be written to
revoke the letters that the scheming
Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, wrote to destroy the Jews in all the king’s provinces.
Now in the
twelfth month, that is, the month
Adar, on the
thirteenth day of the same, when the king’s commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution, in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to
have power over them, (though it was turned to the contrary, that the Jews had rule over them that
hated them;)
On the
thirteenth day of the
twelfth month, the month of
Adar, the king’s command and edict were to be executed. On this day the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, but their plan was overturned and the Jews overpowered those who
hated them.
And the king said unto
Esther the queen, The Jews
have slain and destroyed five hundred men in
Shushan the palace, and the ten sons of
Haman; what
have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces? now what is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: or what is thy request further? and it shall be done.
who said to Queen
Esther, “In the citadel of
Susa the Jews
have killed and destroyed five hundred men, including
Haman’s ten sons. What
have they done in the rest of the royal provinces? Now what is your petition? It will be given to you. And what further do you request? It will be fulfilled.”
Then said
Esther, If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews which are in
Shushan to do to
morrow also according unto this day’s decree, and let
Haman’s ten sons be
hanged upon the
gallows.
And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and
sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons
have sinned, and
cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually.
And when the days of feasting were over, Job would send for his children to
purify them, rising early in the morning to offer burnt offerings for all of them. For Job thought, “Perhaps my children
have sinned and
cursed God in their hearts.” This was Job’s regular practice.
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Whence comest thou? Then
Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and
fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
“Where
have you come from?” said the LORD to
Satan. “From
roaming through the earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?
Then the LORD said to
Satan, “
Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil.”
Hast not thou made an
hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.
Have You not placed a
hedge on every side around him and his household and all that he owns? You
have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions
have increased in the land.
And the
Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away;
yea, they
have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
the
Sabeans swooped down and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone
have escaped to tell you!”
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The fire of God fell from heaven. It burned and consumed the sheep and the servants, and I alone
have escaped to tell you!”
While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and
have carried them away,
yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
While he was still speaking, another
messenger came and reported: “The Chaldeans formed three bands,
raided the camels, and took them away. They put the servants to the sword, and I alone
have escaped to tell you!”
And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and
smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.
when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house. It
collapsed on the young people and they are dead, and I alone
have escaped to tell you!”
And the LORD said unto
Satan, From whence comest thou? And
Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and
fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.
“Where
have you come from?” said the LORD to
Satan. “From
roaming through the earth,” he replied, “and walking back and forth in it.”
And the LORD said unto
Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his
integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.
Then the LORD said to
Satan, “
Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is
blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. He still retains his
integrity, even though you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause.”
Let the stars of the
twilight thereof be dark; let it look for light, but
have none; neither let it see the
dawning of the day:
May its morning stars grow dark; may it wait in vain for
daylight; may it not see the breaking of
dawn.
For now should I
have lain still and been quiet, I should
have slept: then had I been at rest,
For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be
asleep and at rest
I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came.
I am not at ease or quiet; I have no rest, for trouble has come.”
Behold, thou hast
instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.
Surely you
have instructed many, and
have strengthened their feeble hands.
Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.
Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?
Consider now, I
plead: Who, being innocent, has ever perished? Or where
have the upright been destroyed?
Even as I
have seen, they that
plow iniquity, and
sow wickedness,
reap the same.
As I
have observed, those who
plow iniquity and those who
sow trouble
reap the same.
I
have seen a
fool taking root, but suddenly his house was
cursed.
So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.
So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth.
For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.
For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you.
Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.
Indeed, we
have investigated, and it is true! So hear it and know for
yourself.”
For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are
swallowed up.
For then it would
outweigh the sand of the seas— no wonder my words
have been
rash.
For the arrows of the
Almighty are within me, the poison
whereof drinketh up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in
array against me.
For the arrows of the
Almighty have pierced me; my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are
arrayed against me.
Oh that I might have my request; and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!
If only my request were granted and God would
fulfill my hope:
Then should I yet
have comfort;
yea, I would
harden myself in sorrow: let him not
spare; for I
have not concealed the words of the Holy One.
It still brings me comfort, and joy through
unrelenting pain, that I
have not denied the words of the Holy One.
What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is mine end, that I should
prolong my life?
What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What is my future, that I should be patient?
To him that is
afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the
Almighty.
A
despairing man should
have the kindness of his friend, even if he forsakes the fear of the
Almighty.
But my brothers are as faithless as wadis, as
seasonal streams that overflow,
Did I say, Bring unto me? or, Give a reward for me of your substance?
Have I ever said, ‘Give me something; offer me a
bribe from your wealth;
Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I
have erred.
Teach me, and I will be silent. Help me understand how I
have erred.
I
have sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself?
If I
have sinned, what
have I done to You, O watcher of mankind? Why
have You made me Your
target, so that I am a burden to You?
When your children
sinned against Him, He gave them over to their rebellion.
If he destroy him from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee.
If he is uprooted from his place, it will disown him, saying, ‘I never saw you.’
Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would
despise my life.
Hast thou eyes of flesh? or seest thou as man
seeth?
Do You have eyes of flesh? Do You see as man sees?
Thine hands
have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou
dost destroy me.
Your hands shaped me and altogether formed me. Would You now turn and destroy me?
Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy
visitation hath preserved my spirit.
You have granted me life and loving devotion, and Your care has preserved my spirit.
I should
have been as though I had not been; I should
have been carried from the
womb to the grave.
If only I had never come to be, but had been carried from the
womb to the grave.
Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,
Are my days not few? Withdraw from me, that I may have a little comfort,
For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.
You have said, ‘My doctrine is sound, and I am pure in Your sight.’
