And this shall be the plague
wherewith the LORD will
smite all the people that
have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall
consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall
consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall
consume away in their mouth.
And this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes all the peoples who
have warred against Jerusalem: Their flesh will
rot while they stand on their feet, their eyes will
rot in their sockets, and their tongues will
rot in their mouths.
And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that
have no rain; there shall be the plague,
wherewith the LORD will
smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
And if the people of Egypt will not go up and enter in, then the rain will not fall on them; this will be the plague with which the LORD strikes the nations who do not go up to
celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles.
I
have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not
Esau Jacob’s brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob,
“I
have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask, “How
have You loved us?” “Was not
Esau Jacob’s brother?” declares the LORD. “Yet Jacob I
have loved,
but
Esau I
have hated, and I
have made his mountains a wasteland and left his inheritance to the desert jackals.”
Whereas
Edom saith, We are
impoverished, but we will return and build the
desolate places; thus saith the LORD of hosts, They shall build, but I will throw down; and they shall call them, The border of wickedness, and, The people against whom the LORD hath
indignation for ever.
Though
Edom may say, “We
have been
devastated, but we will rebuild the ruins,” this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “They may build, but I will
demolish. They will be called the Land of Wickedness, and a people with whom the LORD is
indignant forever.
A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that
despise my name. And ye say, Wherein
have we
despised thy name?
“A son honors his father, and a servant his master. But if I am a father, where is My honor? And if I am a master, where is your fear of Me?” says the LORD of Hosts to you priests who
despise My name. “But you ask, ‘How
have we
despised Your name?’
Ye offer
polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein
have we
polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the LORD is contemptible.
By presenting
defiled food on My altar. But you ask, ‘How
have we
defiled You?’ By saying that the table of the LORD is contemptible.
Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for
nought? neither do ye
kindle fire on mine altar for
nought. I
have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand.
“Oh, that one of you would shut the temple doors, so that you would no longer
kindle useless fires on My altar! I take no pleasure in you,” says the LORD of Hosts, “and I will accept no offering from your hands.
But ye
have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the LORD is
polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible.
“But you
profane it when you say, ‘The table of the Lord is
defiled, and as for its fruit, its food is contemptible.’
Ye said also, Behold, what a
weariness is it! and ye
have snuffed at it, saith the LORD of hosts; and ye brought that which was
torn, and the
lame, and the sick; thus ye brought an offering: should I accept this of your hand? saith the LORD.
You also say: ‘Oh, what a
nuisance!’ And you turn up your nose at it,” says the LORD of Hosts. “You bring offerings that are
stolen,
lame, or sick! Should I accept these from your hands?” asks the LORD.
If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, saith the LORD of hosts, I will even send a
curse upon you, and I will
curse your blessings:
yea, I
have cursed them already, because ye do not lay it to heart.
If you do not
listen, and if you do not take it to heart to honor My name,” says the LORD of Hosts, “I will send a
curse among you, and I will
curse your blessings.
Yes, I
have already begun to
curse them, because you are not taking it to heart.
And ye shall know that I have sent this commandment unto you, that my covenant might be with Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.
Then you will know that I have sent you this commandment so that My covenant with Levi may continue,” says the LORD of Hosts.
But ye are departed out of the way; ye
have caused many to
stumble at the law; ye
have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.
But you
have departed from the way, and your instruction has caused many to
stumble. You
have violated the covenant of Levi,” says the LORD of Hosts.
Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as ye have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.
“So I in turn
have made you
despised and
humiliated before all the people, because you
have not kept My ways, but
have shown
partiality in matters of the law.”
Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal
treacherously every man against his brother, by
profaning the covenant of our fathers?
Do we not all
have one Father? Did not one God
create us? Why then do we break faith with one another so as to
profane the covenant of our fathers?
And this
have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with
weeping, and with crying out,
insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand.
And this is another thing you do: You cover the altar of the LORD with tears, with
weeping and
groaning, because He no longer regards your offerings or receives them
gladly from your hands.
Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt
treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.
Yet you ask, “Why?” It is because the LORD has been a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have broken faith, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant.
Ye
have wearied the LORD with your words. Yet ye say, Wherein
have we
wearied him? When ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?
You
have wearied the LORD with your words; yet you ask, “How
have we
wearied Him?” By saying, “All who do evil are good in the sight of the LORD, and in them He delights,” or, “Where is the God of justice?”
For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
“Because I, the LORD, do not change, you descendants of Jacob have not been destroyed.
Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return?
Yet from the days of your fathers, you have turned away from My statutes and have not kept them. Return to Me, and I will return to you,” says the LORD of Hosts. “But you ask, ‘How can we return?’
Will a man
rob God? Yet ye
have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein
have we
robbed thee? In
tithes and offerings.
Will a man
rob God? Yet you are
robbing Me! But you ask, ‘How do we
rob You?’ In
tithes and offerings.
Your words
have been
stout against me, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, What
have we spoken so much against thee?
“Your words against Me have been harsh,” says the LORD. “Yet you ask, ‘What have we spoken against You?’
Ye
have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we
have kept his
ordinance, and that we
have walked
mournfully before the LORD of hosts?
You
have said, ‘It is
futile to serve God. What
have we gained by keeping His requirements and walking
mournfully before the LORD of Hosts?
Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
asking, “Where is the One who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”
And he sent them to
Bethlehem, and said, Go and search
diligently for the young child; and when ye
have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
And sending them to
Bethlehem, he said: “Go and search carefully for the Child, and when you find Him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship Him.”
And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
where he stayed until the death of Herod. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”
And think not to say within
yourselves, We
have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.
And do not
presume to say to
yourselves, ‘We
have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.
But John
forbad him, saying, I
have need to be
baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?
But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be
baptized by You, and do You come to me?”
The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
the people living in darkness
have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has
dawned.”
Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt
have lost his savour,
wherewith shall it be salted? it is
thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be
trodden under foot of men.
You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its
savor, how can it be made
salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and
trampled by men.
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
Do not think that I
have come to
abolish the Law or the Prophets. I
have not come to
abolish them, but to
fulfill them.
Ye
have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and
whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
You
have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not murder’ and ‘
Anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’
Truly I tell you, you will not get out until you
have paid the last
penny.
Ye
have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit
adultery:
You
have heard that it was said, ‘Do not commit
adultery.’
Again, ye
have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not
forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
Again, you
have heard that it was said to the ancients, ‘Do not break your oath, but
fulfill your vows to the Lord.’
Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.’
And if any man will
sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him
have thy
cloke also.
if someone wants to
sue you and take your
tunic, let him
have your
cloak as well;
Ye
have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and
hate thine enemy.
You
have heard that it was said, ‘Love your
neighbor’ and ‘
Hate your enemy.’
For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?
If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Do not even tax collectors do the same?
Take
heed that ye do not your
alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye
have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
“Be careful not to perform your righteous acts before men to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
Therefore when thou doest thine
alms, do not sound a
trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may
have glory of men.
Verily I say unto you, They
have their reward.
So when you give to the
needy, do not sound a
trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. Truly I tell you, they already
have their full reward.
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men.
Verily I say unto you, They
have their reward.
And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their full reward.
Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a
sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast.
Verily I say unto you, They
have their reward.
When you fast, do not be
somber like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they already
have their full reward.
(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
For the Gentiles
strive after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.
Therefore all things
whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
In everything, then, do to others as you would have them do to you. For this is the essence of the Law and the Prophets.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord,
have we not
prophesied in thy name? and in thy name
have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not
prophesy in Your name, and in Your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’
The
centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be
healed.
The
centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to
have You come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be
healed.
When Jesus heard it, he
marvelled, and said to them that followed,
Verily I say unto you, I
have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
When Jesus heard this, He
marveled and said to those following Him, “Truly I tell you, I
have not found
anyone in Israel with such great faith.
And Jesus said unto the
centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was
healed in the
selfsame hour.
Then Jesus said to the
centurion, “Go! As you
have believed, so will it be done for you.” And his servant was
healed at that very hour.
And Jesus saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.
Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.”
And, behold, they
cried out, saying, What
have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come
hither to
torment us before the time?
“What do You want with us, Son of God?” they
shouted. “
Have You come here to
torture us before the appointed time?”
But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will
have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to
repentance.
But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us.
As Jesus went on from there, two blind men followed Him, crying out, “Have mercy on us, Son of David!”
Heal the sick,
cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye
have received, freely give.
Heal the sick, raise the dead,
cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Freely you
have received; freely give.
And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.
Brother will
betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rise against their parents and
have them put to death.
But when they
persecute you in this city,
flee ye into another: for
verily I say unto you, Ye shall not
have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.
When they
persecute you in one town,
flee to the next. Truly I tell you, you will not reach all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they
have called the master of the house
Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?
It is enough for a disciple to be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul, how much more the members of his household!
Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
For I am come to set a man at
variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
The blind receive their sight, and the
lame walk, the lepers are
cleansed, and the
deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor
have the gospel preached to them.
The blind receive sight, the
lame walk, the lepers are
cleansed, the
deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor.
And saying, We
have piped unto you, and ye
have not danced; we
have mourned unto you, and ye
have not
lamented.
Woe unto thee, Chorazin!
woe unto thee,
Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and
Sidon, they would
have repented long ago in
sackcloth and ashes.
“
Woe to you, Chorazin!
Woe to you,
Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and
Sidon, they would
have repented long ago in
sackcloth and ashes.
And thou,
Capernaum, which art
exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to
hell: for if the mighty works, which
have been done in thee, had been done in
Sodom, it would
have remained until this day.
And you,
Capernaum, will you be lifted up to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Hades! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in
Sodom, it would
have remained to this day.
At that time Jesus answered and said, I
thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast
hid these things from the wise and
prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
At that time Jesus declared, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.
All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to
whomsoever the Son will
reveal him.
All things
have been entrusted to Me by My Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to
reveal Him.
But he said unto them,
Have ye not read what David did, when he was an
hungred, and they that were with him;
Jesus replied, “
Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were
hungry?
Or
have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple
profane the sabbath, and are
blameless?
Or
haven’t you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath and yet are innocent?
But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.
If only you had known the meaning of ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent.
And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?
He replied, “If one of you has a sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will he not take hold of it and lift it out?
Behold my servant, whom I
have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall
shew judgment to the Gentiles.
“Here is My Servant, whom I
have chosen, My beloved, in whom My soul delights. I will put My Spirit on Him, and He will
proclaim justice to the nations.
But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.
But I tell you that men will give an account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken.
Some fell upon
stony places, where they had not much earth: and
forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:
Some fell on rocky ground, where it did not
have much soil. It
sprang up quickly because the soil was shallow.
For
whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall
have more abundance: but
whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.
Whoever has will be given more, and he will
have an abundance.
Whoever does not
have, even what he has will be taken away from him.
For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they
have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should
heal them.
For this people’s heart has grown
callous; they hardly hear with their ears, and they
have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would
heal them.’
For
verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men
have desired to see those things which ye see, and
have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and
have not heard them.
For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.
So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open My mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden since the foundation of the world.”
Jesus saith unto them,
Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him,
Yea, Lord.
Have you understood all these things?” “
Yes,” they answered.
For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.
because John had been telling him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”
And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.
Although Herod wanted to kill John, he was afraid of the people, because they regarded John as a prophet.
And he sent, and
beheaded John in the prison.
and sent to
have John
beheaded in the prison.
And they say unto him, We
have here but five
loaves, and two fishes.
“We
have here only five
loaves of bread and two fish,” they answered.
But ye say,
Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by
whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
But you say that if
anyone says to his father or mother, ‘Whatever you would
have received from me is a gift devoted to God,’
And honour not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition.
he need not honor his father or mother with it. Thus you
nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
And, behold, a woman of
Canaan came out of the same coasts, and
cried unto him, saying,
Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is
grievously vexed with a devil.
And a
Canaanite woman from that region came to Him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David,
have mercy on me! My daughter is
miserably possessed by a
demon.”
Then Jesus called his disciples unto him, and said, I
have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and
have nothing to eat: and I will not send them away fasting, lest they
faint in the way.
Then Jesus called His disciples to Him and said, “I
have compassion for this crowd, because they
have already been with Me three days and
have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away
hungry, or they may
faint along the way.”
And his disciples say unto him, Whence should we have so much bread in the wilderness, as to fill so great a multitude?
The disciples replied, “Where in this
desolate place could we find enough bread to feed such a large crowd?”
And Jesus saith unto them, How many
loaves have ye? And they said, Seven, and a few little fishes.
“How many
loaves do you
have?” Jesus asked. “Seven,” they replied, “and a few small fish.”
And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.
They discussed this among themselves and concluded, “It is because we did not bring any bread.”
Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among
yourselves, because ye
have brought no bread?
Aware of their conversation, Jesus said, “You of little faith, why are you
debating among
yourselves about having no bread?
But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me,
Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
But Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me,
Satan! You are a
stumbling block to Me. For you do not
have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”
But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but
have done unto him
whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
But I tell you that
Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but
have done to him whatever they wished. In the same way, the Son of Man will suffer at their hands.”
Lord,
have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and
sore vexed: for
ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and
oft into the water.
“Lord,
have mercy on my son,” he said. “He has seizures and is suffering
terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.
And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for
verily I say unto you, If ye
have faith as a grain of
mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to
yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
“Because you
have so little faith,” He answered. “For truly I tell you, if you
have faith the size of a
mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
But
whoso shall
offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a
millstone were
hanged about his neck, and that he were
drowned in the depth of the sea.
But if
anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to
stumble, it would be better for him to
have a large
millstone hung around his neck and to be
drowned in the depths of the sea.
Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot
offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life
halt or
maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into
everlasting fire.
If your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life
crippled or
lame than to
have two hands and two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire.
And if thine eye
offend thee,
pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into
hell fire.
And if your eye causes you to sin,
gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to
have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of
hell.
How think ye? if a man
have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone
astray,
doth he not leave the
ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone
astray?
What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them goes
astray, will he not leave the
ninety-nine on the hills and go out to search for the one that is lost?
